[Audyssey] Muds on audiogames.net

2011-09-02 Thread dark
Well this is an odd question.

Now that I'm back, I'd like to take the database in hand if I can, and sort a
few things out. Add several games that need adding and write up some submission
guidelines for what is considdered a full game and therefore worht adding, and
what is more a work in progress or learning exercise and so not.

In addition, I'd like to think about muds.

I've just rejiggered the alterean entry, wrote a new description and more
accurate info.

Next on the list is materiamagica.

the problem is though, just as we can't add the entire contents of the if
archive to the database, we can't add every single mud out there, and
probably not even every single mud someone happens to play.

Alterean obviously needed an entry sinse it's got the blind compatibility stuff
and soundpack, and on that basis godwars 2, Materiamagica, new worlds Ateraan
and maybe medevia need pages too, sinse all have good blind support and some
have soundpacks.

However what else?

any thoughts on which muds should! be included and how to determine this? while
I've played a few, and play alterean quite seriously at the moment, I'm not an
expert in muds, so some opinions from other people who've played more and
perhaps found compatibility issues with some would be appreciated.

All the best,

Dark.

Hi Dark,

Cool, thanks, if I ever do another maze type game or level I will have a key to
announce location and direction. The thing is, a maze for me has no replay
value, so don't know that I will make more of them. On level 3 both the
chimpanzees and the projectile sounds move as you turn toward them to shoot
down the projectile. Glad that you like the different sounds of the
projectiles as you shoot them. I often play level 3 just for the noise and
destruction of the projectiles.

As Dark said, level 5 is actually just the game of Master Mind, thus the

Re: [Audyssey] Awsome homer thoughts

2011-09-02 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Dark,

In Master Mind and level 5 of Awesome Homer I usually do 1 1 2 2, then 3 3 4 4,
then 5 5 6 6. Of course some times the results change that, but that is how I
usually start. I liked your logic though and will have to try that a few times.

BFN

- Original Message -
Hi Mich.

I'm afraid the combination is simply jim's mastermind game (you can play the
game in it's own right by downloading it from jim's site).

the combination changes each time I believe, You just need to use logic to
work it out by being told what is in the right place and what isn't.

so I started with 1 1 1 1, and was told one number was correct and in the
right place.

I then tried 1 2 2 2 , and could be certain that one number would be correct
sinse it had a 1, if there were anymore it'd be a 2.

As it happened I was told that 1 was right and in the right place, so I knew
that first number was 1.

i then tried 1 3 3 3 and was told two were right and in right place, so I
knew one of those last three numbers wa s a3.

I then tried 1 3 4 4 and was told one was right and right place (the one),
and one right in wrong place, so I knew the second number wasn't 3, and also
that the combination didn't contain fours.

I then tried 1 5 3 5 and was told I had two right in right place and two
right in wrong place. sinse I knew the 1 was right and one of the fives was
right, the three must go at the end, thus the combination turned out to be 1
5 5 3.

As I said, to practice this sort of logic, just get jim's mastermind game
and play it a few times.

Hth.

Re: [Audyssey] help with level 4 of ausem homer

2011-09-02 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Dark,

The only problem with your tactic for level 4 is that the more that you move
left and right the slower you go and thus your score will be lower than if you
move just enough to clear each tree. You know just like being as close to each
gate as possible while skiing a slalom course.

HTH

BFN

- Original Message -
funny, the tactic I found best was to go as far to one side as possible,
then when I heard a tree coming up start my approach to the other side
before the tree has completely past, that way I could always be certain off
having time to get around the next tree.

Level 6 is proving tough, but in comparison to level 1 levels 2-5 were a lot
easier, even though by arcade game standards Jim obviously worked to make
them a litle bit harder, such as requiring very precise centering of the
chimps, and having some tactics necessary in dodging those trees while
skeeing.

Hi Jim.

I've always used that method on mastermind games previously, sinse it seems
the most streight forward and can quickly determine when a set has none of a
particular number.

I'll try 1 1 2 2 as well myself for variety next time I play, for the
variety.

I think though ultimately, the method you use doesn't really matter so long
as you have enough logic to interpret the results according to what numbers
you put in and what stays the same.

Hi Jim.

that is true about mazes, though for me the fun is exploring the hole maze
especially if the enviornment or hazards change as you explore it, pluss if
the maze is large enough you cannot memorize it's entire route.

Turrican and it's sequal, Turrican 2 which are largely the reason I became
interested in computer games have huuge! 2D platforming mazes, with many
different ways to go.

finding the exit is only part of the fun, sinse there are hidden power ups
and extras, as well as more enemies to fight or other hazards.

this for me is a good bit of the fun of gaming, exploring and seeing what
you find.

i do have one question about the homer maze though.

I understand the wind sound indicates a turn, however sometimes if I walk in
a streight line I get the wind sound then the ambience changes. Does this
indicate I've turned another direction, or is this just a break in the
tunnel.

Do I in fact only turn when I physically use the left or right arrow keys to
do so.

Hi Dark,

The only problem with your tactic for level 4 is that the more that you
move left and right the slower you go and thus your score will be lower
than if you move just enough to clear each tree. You know just like

If this is still happening to you, please give this a try. I'm thinking this

if my current work will solve the problem. Please download this file, put it
in your castaways directory, and run it instead of the normal castaways.exe
file.

Multiplayer, and a few other features, will not work while using this test file
but it is just intended to see if the error goes away. If this works, it means
that the next game update I release will also not error for you.

Re: [Audyssey] Muds on audiogames.net

2011-09-02 Thread dark

Hi John.

The problem with unique2 as a criteria is that while games on
audiogames.net do have to be games in their own right and not works in
progress, there is nothing that says they have to be unique.

this morning, the gm of a brouser based game turned up, asking for access
help and for an entry in the database.

From what I can see, him game, www.loraeon.com looks pretty much the same as
torn city, time hunter, alien adoption agency or a good few other brouser
games, fight other players, train stats, get money, buy gear, fight more
etc.

however, it'll probably stil get a database entry just as time hunter did
siply because it's accessible, that afterall is the criteria.

Providing a link to a mud list is a good idea though, and that's one thing
I'll considder. I've done the same thing for if games, providing a link to
the format index of the archive on each interpreters' page, so maybe a link
to a good mudlist could be provided on the pages of mud clients, thus making
it possible for players to search out new muds, and meaning the only ones in
the databse will be ones with soundpacks and/or specific access options.

Hi Dark,
I don't really play a lot of online games, alteraeon being the exception.
Nevertheless, here goes to answer your question: Personally, I'd add
entries for muds that have a unique theme and/or style. You might also add
muds that have soundpacks, as you're already doing. As a bit of a
comprimise, you might consider adding a section in the review where you
provide a list where similar muds to the one in the review are listed.
This would provide players with a base mud, (the one in the review) but
would also givve them a you might want to try this list.

Hopefully all this makes sense, I'm not really sure how clear I'm being.

[Audyssey] Mud facts was, Muds on audiogames.net

2011-09-02 Thread dark

Hi Fred.

As regards muds, some information is already on the genre descriptions page
of audiogames.net and can also be found in the documentation for vipmud, but
I'll try and explain a bit more.

Mud stands for multiple user dimention. Basically what this means is a mud
is a world in text online that you and other people connect to.

The interface is rather like an interactive fiction game, with room
descriptions, commands like look or put object in object, fight monster etc,
there is however one major difference.

Where as in interactive fiction, the game is essentially turn based and will
sit there and wait for you to enter more commands, muds are completely real
time.

Text is sent to your screen from the mud server across the net, and to the
screens of other people directly as it happens.

So when your in a fight, the monster (known as a mob or mobile in most
muds), will continue to attack you irrispective of what you do even if you
don't type any commands.

Another way of thinking about this is like a chat program where text is sent
to your screen as the other person types it.

Sinse the action is textual and real time, reading and respond to the text
of what is going on in a timely fashion is pretty essential, especially when
you need to type longer commands to respond to the mud in time.

Mud clients such as mushclient or vipmud have facilities to make this real
time response in text easier. For instance in oriol's alterean soundpack,
there are sounds for some events instead of text, and some of the more
coplex strings of commands have been reduced to a single keybpress, such as
f3 to perform a blood sacrifice, harvest teeth, then sacrifice the corpse of
a near enemy.

~This probably sounds far more complex when explained than it actually is to
play, in fact I myself was rather confused by muds until I just rolled up my
sleves and had a go, sinse once your playing things are fairly intuative.

Though you can play a mud through windows just using telnet to transfer text
from the mud onto your screen, a custome client such as vipmud is
recommended, in fact if your new to muds I'd suggest you download vipmud
from gma games and try that out as it has a lot of newby friendly features
and explanations, dispite being a very flexible client.

you might also try alterean with the mushclient soundpack (read the new
audiogames.net entry for details), as well, it's a pretty awsome mud game.

hth.

[Audyssey] sound for closed buildings in castaways

2011-09-02 Thread alex wallis

Hi.
I think it would be quite useful to have a sound for when a building is
closed and you go over it,
as sometimes I close my tavern after it is stocked so peasants can do
other things.

however, I frequently forget it is closed til people start dying.
so it would be quite good to have a sound to indicate a building is
closed, and perhaps also a message to let you know the tavern has run
out of food. this would be particularly useful in mission 3 as resource
and people management is key for this mission.

Re: [Audyssey] Awsome homer thoughts

2011-09-02 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Dark,

If you hear the turning sound or a bumping sound and then the ambiance sound
changes, you have turned into a new cave. Lack of fore planning ended up with
some giving you the bumping into a wall sound and some not. But if the
ambiance sound changes, you have turned into a new cave.

At the end of the main cave is a T and you will automatically turn randomly
left or right. Other T intersections always turn to the same direction. And
you will always automatically turn when you run into the end of a cave. Oh
yeah, if you run into the door that you came into the caves through, you will
turn around 180 degrees and head back the other way.

2011-09-02 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Dark,

Yep, guess that I could have described the scoring in with the instructions.

On level 1 your most points are for destroying barrels and birds.
On level 2 the closer to landing in the center of the next airplane the more
points you get for each jump.
On level 3 it is the same, the closer to centered the projectile is the more
points you get for shooting down that projectile.
On level 4 it is all about the time that it takes you to get to the bottom of
the mountain. And as I said, the more that you turn the slower you go.
On level 5 figuring out the combination in fewer tries and time the better the
score.
On level 6 it is all about how long it takes you to get to the exit. the
shorter the time the more points you get.
On level 7 it is the same. That is the shorter the time, the more points you
get. But things like running into the other cars slow you down.

Hi Dark,

Yeah, I guess if I created a huge multi level maze with some random hazards and maybe
even some things to collect and monsters to fight etc. Oh wait, that is MOTA!
grin But really I create games as much for me to play as for others. So I
still do not see that much replay value in a maze. I had a heck of a time finishing
creating level 6 as I was just not inspired to finish and play it. And actually the
same for level 4 as I started out creating it as one fixed slalom course. And again
was just not inspired to finish and play it. I had about half of the fixed course
created, but then I changed my mind and made the whole thing random and poof! gotter

Re: [Audyssey] help with level 4 of ausem homer

2011-09-02 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Fatih,

Yeah, you are not going to be able to guess the combination to the door. You
will need to logically deduce the combination from the results that it gives
you of your guesses. It is actually just the board game Master Mind. You can
practice the game of Master Mind by getting it from my web site. File name
winmast.exe. The winmast.exe file can be found on my free windows sapi5 text
to speech games page.

Here is what Dark said and how he deduced the combination;
You just need to use logic to work it out by being told what is in the right
place and what isn't.

so I started with 1 1 1 1, and was told one number was correct and in the
right place.

I then tried 1 5 3 5 and was told I had two right in right place and two
right in wrong place. sinse I knew the 1 was right and one of the fives was
right, the three must go at the end, thus the combination turned out to be 1 5 5 3.

I told Dark that I usually start out with 1 1 2 2, then 3 3 4 4, then 5 5 6 6.
But we are both going to try each other's way of deducing the combination.

Actually after giving this a try, I think it might not work out as expected.
Until your economy is quite stable, the tavern runs out quite a bit, if only
for a few ticks at a time. Unless I adjust how it determines when to display
the message, you end up with dozens of unwanted and unnecessary warning
messages from the tavern.

I will try a few things when I get time again to code, but if anyone has any
ideas already I'd be happy to hear them.

Hi Dark,

Cool, thanks, if I ever do another maze type game or level I will have a key
to announce location and direction. The thing is, a maze for me has no
replay value, so don't know that I will make more of them. On level 3 both
the chimpanzees and the projectile sounds move as you turn toward them to
shoot down the projectile. Glad that you like the different sounds of the
projectiles as you shoot them. I often play level 3 just for the noise and
destruction of the projectiles.

 Hi.
I think it would be quite useful to have a sound for when a
building is closed and you go over it,
as sometimes I close my tavern after it is stocked so
 peasants can do other things.
however, I frequently forget it is closed til people start
 dying.
so it would be quite good to have a sound to indicate a
building is closed, and perhaps also a message to let you
know the tavern has run out of food. this would be
particularly useful in mission 3 as resource and people
management is key for this mission.
