I have to agree with this. I like a challenge and in fact lose interest quickly if it is easy to kill. I want to have to die a few times until I figure it out and get it right. Well, I downloaded entombed just a couple days ago. So, unless there has been a more recent release I am pretty sure I am up to date. And I did delete the saved games and reinstalled but still no luck. I am using jaws 10. Thanks for the suggestions though. Ok, so I tried these suggestions and I still haven't had any luck. As I said, i downloaded this just a few days ago so I assume it is up to date though I am unsure on how to check that. I pressed alt j and when I do that I have no speech at all. I can up and down arrow and I will hear beeping but no speech. I then press alt s and sapi speech comes in loud and clear. I have tried changing it in preferences but have the same problem. I went into the saved games folder and tried deleting the preferences.dat but when i went back to the game and tried setting jaws it still refused to cooperate. I did not see an entombed.dat file but I did try deleting the saved games folder entirely and still no luck. Leave it to jaws to be difficult. lol Or at least jaws on my computer anyway. Hi, As it has been said before, make sure that you have the latest build, version 1.00, installed. If you do, here are some suggestions: 1. When the game starts, press alt J to make jaws as the preferred speech engine. 2. Go to change preferences. 3. Change anything there and save your preferences. When your preferences are saved, it should say so and take you bakc to the main menu. This should fix your problem and jaws should be the default speech when the game is started. If this does not work, go into your documents folder and find the saved games folder. Go two folders in. You should find about 8 files there. Find the Entombed.dat file and delete it. Then go into the game again. SAPI will be your speech at this time. Then follow the instructions above. Any other problems, just write. HTH. Press right arrow key to explore jaws submenu, and press the right arrow key. go to explorer my jaws and press enter. look and see if you have an entombed.jcf file, and delete it. Then re-launch the game and see if that fixes it. Also, can you alt tab away from the game while it is running, and jaws will speak properly? If so, then I think the above suggestion will help. [Audyssey] the Wii and games that are accessible
Hey everyone, while we are on the topic of game consoles I had a question. My niece, who is 9, jus tgot a Wii for Christmas. She is a pretty high partial but has some difficulty if the print is very small or if the contrast isn't just right. Does anyone have any ideas of games that are pretty blind friendly for a high partial, but that is appropriate for a 9 year old? This is much how I think as well. Though I also had perfect vision or the first 8 years and remember things clearly. I actually think in visually terms still and can read maps pretty easily. As a result I generally don't have a lot of problems getting around the levels in Monkey Business. One reason I believe I am so good at Monkey Business, Sarah, or Shades of Doom, is even though I'm totally blind now I still think like a sighted person. I'm able to see the level in my head and put doors, items, staircases, whatever in their proper relationship to each other. I'm able to see an entire level like a 2d map with this or that to the south, this or that to the east, something else is west of here, etc. So from what you and Scott both have said I gather blind people generally don't think like this. They think of an area not as a whole, but only in terms from getting from one landmark to the next. This is completely foreign to me, and would be for anyone who has been sighted for very long. This sounds to me like a very big difference in perception from a sighted person's point of view of the world and a blind person's point of view of the world. If so that would explain why I don't have problems getting around games like Shades of Doom, and why so many others can't make heads or tails out of the mazes. They litterally have no sense of depth, shape, and how things relate to one another in the real world. dark wrote: I love the sound effects and environmnet of the game too, I just find the unprecise nature of the game's navigation features rather gets on my nerves. there's personally nothing more annoying than hereing an object beacon, walking towards it only to walk past, then attempting to find it only to realize it's on the other side of some complicated wall Terrain. I admit though, my senses of both space and navigation are pretty abyssmal, even in real life (I remember all my routes by land marks, not by any sort of relations betwene the places I'm going), which is probably why i personally need such a handy navigation system as the one in the Gma engine and terraformers. Re: [Audyssey] mota help
But wouldn't the guess work be part of the challenge? I mean, in all honesty I don't know how feasible it would be to try that. But, in Jim's baseball game wen the sound is moving from the left to teh right speaker, practice is what helps you succeed. Just like a sighted player has to estimate the gap and if they are wrong? they get hit. I think the idea of it getting louder as it is closing, interesting. Kellie and my lovable Lady J. One way would be to have the trap door make clank sounds such as made by spokes on a wheel. Then you could count the clanks in a test, and if there was twenty, you could press the button and get under before the 20 clanks sounded. I did this in the DOS Pack man in which the ghosts voiced the distance to you either in a normal voice which was ahead of you or in a deep voice which was ghosts behind you. Or in Space invaders where the invaders spoke their distance from you as they changed rows. David did a countdown in his SOD timed mines and I am adding a countdown in Sarah to spells that are timed to end. Even Star Trek had a count down voice for when the ship would self destruct. So having a trap door that counts down to when it is closed is realistic. Certainly Montezuma's Revenge was that way. You had white keys for white doors, blue keys for blue doors, and red keys for red doors. However, as I've decided to stick to a more modern side-scroller format I'll probably just forget about the color coding for doors and keys. As for using something other than keys to unlock and open doors I hear you there. I've been playing the Tomb Raider games for 12-years, and I've seen a lot of pretty cool doors/traps. Some are unlocked by pulling a lever on the wall, others are unlocked with a key, and others are a type of trap door that you need to pass through by unlocking it in a special way. For example, this passed year I've been playing the newest Tomb Raider game Underworld. In level 3, I think it is, Lara discovers her father had hidden Thor's gantlets in the family crypts beneath Croft Manner. Near the end of that level there is a really cool trap door which I've been thinking about using in one of my Tomb Hunter games because it is so cool. Basically, there is this chamber with a giant wheel on the wall, and a trap door is hidden in the ceiling of the chamber. You have to walk Lara Croft over to the wheel, and press the action button on the joystick to get her to turn the wheel. As she turns the wheel counter clockwise the trap door slowly slides open above her. Of course, the trick is to get up there without it closing on Lara. The second you let go of the action button the wheel starts turning clockwise and the trap door starts closing. There is this wall nearby with hand holds in it you can climb up. Problem is by the time you make it about three-quarters up the wall the trap door is almost closed. The only way I've found to get through that trap door is to Have her do a jump upwards, grab hold of the ledge, and then use the vault command to have her vault through the doorway just before the trap door smashes the world's favorite archaeologist flat. It is a unique and very cool trap in my opinion. The Tomb Raider side-scrollers I don't believe they had anything quite that complex, but they often used levers instead of keys to open various doors. One door I do remember from Tomb Raider Prophecy you opened it with a lever, but it was timed. If you didn't run through it in time the door would drop down and smash Lara Croft beneath it. However, this might be too tricky for someone who is blind. As I recall you could see the door coming down so you could gage weather

I hope I am not to late in responding to this topic as I just checked my email for the first time in several days. However, I would like to say that I personally would like a more modern type game. I hust like the modern style better and that is nothing against a side scroller since I remember playing Mario when I was younger and was a high enough partial to do so. I just like the chance to have a modern game, those are the ones that I want to play now and can't. Kellie and my lovable Lady J. To get this out of the way as your opinions, responses, etc will completely determine the future of the game from here on out. This is extremely important, and I hope all of you take this message very seriously. I hope you think about your responses very carefully before responding as your input is very important to me right now. As most of you know James North was planning on releasing a remake of the classic side-scroller Montezuma's Revenge. He took several orders for that game in December of 2004, but do to a variety of personal issues he was unable to complete the game within the time specified. Eventually, I took over development of the game in early 2006, and I decided to rewrite the game in C# .NET. I was nearly finished with the game in January of 2008, had already taken orders for the game myself, when I was contacted privately regarding the game's copyright infringement. As neither James or I had legally applied for permission to make a modern remake of the game I was officially ordered to cease and desist all development of the game. Rather than fight the cease and desist order I complied, and began my own side-scroller called Mysteries of the Ancients. It was initially intended to be a classic side-scroller along the lines of Pitfall, Montezuma's Revenge, Mario Brothers, and similar games. The thing to keep in mind here is that those games lacked many of the features modern FPS games have today. There was no such thing as randomly placed items and monsters, you couldn't save your game and pick up where you left off later, when you punched an enemy you didn't miss unless you were too far away, etc. The main object of the game was to beat the game and earn the highest score possible. For some of you younger gamers it would be quite primitive compared to the Play Station and XBox games you are use too. It was a completely different generation of gaming. I realized back then that many of you may not be happy with a 1980's type of side-scroller. I asked many of you if you would be happy with a more modern FPS game instead. The answer i got back was a resounding no! A couple of you wrote me very passionate letters about how much you would like to be able to play a classic side-scroller like those that were out in the 1980's that you were never able to play. So I set out to do just that. However, what I had feared all along began to come true. Many of you began making requests that were completely contrary to the type of game that was being developed. You asked for random items and monsters. After some debate I decided to add that feature, and removed the scoring feature since it was no longer needed. Those of you who wanted the feature were happy to get it, but those who didn't began asking me for a way to turn it off. They wanted a classic side-scroller, and asked me to stop adding features like that. Since it was too much work to have it both ways I had to decide to leave the random items and monsters in since most of the people liked it that way. The thing is the suggestions and requests didn't stop there. Over the passed year I've been consistently asked to add features like you would typically find on more modern FPS type games. It isn't so much I am a posed to adding these kinds of features, but it is inconsistent with an 80's type side-scroller. As the game currently is it is neither a classic side-scroller, and it isn't a fully modern FPS game either. For that reason some people, including myself, are unhappy with the way the game is turning out. I would much prefer either a straight out classic side-scroller or a modern FPS game. At this point the game is neither one, and is a bit of a mix of both styles. That might not be bad, but over the passed few months I've grown to completely hate the game because it isn't the game I wanted to create. It is nothing like it. So here is the question. Do you guys want me to go back and make this game as a classic side-scroller, as was intended initially, without randomized monsters and items, no save game features

Monkey business, i have to admit, I'm actually absolutely appauling! at and have never made it through the Jungle stage successfully. I just find the navigation used in that game extremely imprecise, as to pointing out objects, and spend most of my time running into walls uncertain of where I am. the games produced with the Gma engine, and indeed Terraformers however, are a vastly different story. The precise nature of audio to in game objects with turn indicators etc, the use of various viewing tools like the list view, or the 360 and streight ahead scans, the precise nature of object indication sounds and the ability to have objects in range listed by catagory using the monster view, not to mention of course some great sonar for targiting (though the audio precision in the Gma engine is quite useable as it is). All of these contribute to making 3D navigation not only possible, but considderably easy. I'm fairly certain that however complex the environment, Tom will be able to utilize tools to compensate, - actually I personally think the view function in 2D mota makes the game a litle too easy when calculating jumps (though I'm certainly not saying it should be removed or changed, just illustrating Tom's ability to create really good ease of use tools for his games. I'd therefore really encourage people who've felt 3D frustration not to be put off 3D entirely, and especially not by monkey business. Just wanted to let you know that I've finally finished the Adrift text adventure game I've been working on since late 2006. Due to the nature of the game, I suggest that it not be discussed here. Although it's a game, it's an adult text adventure game and would not be appropriate for the list. However since I know some of you play text adventures, and some of you also play adult text adventures, it's fair to let you know about it. You can find the game at www.aifcommunity.org in the Adrift 4.0 games section. It's called Last Week, the file name specifically is LastWeek-1.0.zip. Many thanks and if you have any questions about the game, you can either write me privately or you can subscribe to the aifarchive email group on yahoogroups where all adult text adventure games are discussed. many thanks. -- Raul A. Re: [Audyssey] The real Game Circle
Agreed. I too, listen to some rap. actually, I listen to almost any type of music depending on my mood. However, rap would not fit for certain types of games. sure, there are games in the mainstream who use it. But it fits in with the feel of the game. music is there to create ambiance, it serves no more purpose then that. I mean, it isn't nescessary to have it to play a game. It is used to set the tone, to help create the type of atmosphere. For instance, in an rpg, you are heading into a dangerous area such as in an enemy castle or deep into a dungeon, the music would reflect the sense of parril, by sounding dark and omonous. And with that switch in music, the player is aware that something has changed, that perhaps they should be more alert to their surroundings. It is the same with music in movies. sometimes, while I don't know precisely what is going on, the music gives me some idea of the type of scene. Weather it appears that someone is trying to use stealth to sneak into a location or there is a high packed action scene or something more relaxing, happy etc. so, for me, the type of music used in a game is important to really get me into it. Here's another one: Would you want to be listening to Beethoven's fifth symphony as the mood music for a fast paced first person shooter game like Aliens in the Outback? Whether you like a particular type of music or not is not the important thing. It's whether that music fits in with the main purpose of what you bought; a game. If you're buying a game for the music, buy a CD of that music and save money, providing that music can be found on a CD. I buy games in order to play those games. Not everyone likes the so-called up to date music you speak of. I know several people who absolutely hate hip-hop and I know a few people who think it is the best music on earth. I personally dislike hip-hop, I am an 80's rock fan myself, so I would not be inclined to include that sort of music in my games. One way to resolve this problem is for a developer to use music that is acceptable to just about everyone such as by using cinematic music tracks. I've got plenty of mainstream games here that use cinematic music tracks like Star Wars, Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones, Star Trek Elite Force I and Elite Force II, etc. The music is something that is there and doesn't disrupt your concentration while playing. Now, could you imagine playing something like Star Trek Elite Force and instead of the Star Trek cinematic music in the background you have some hip-hop music in the background instead. Not only would it sound completely out of place for that kind of game, but I would find it totally distracting. For me it would kill the mood, and be come a major disruption. Now, let's assume the game was about gang warfair in L.A. Then, I could see some hip-hop music in the game. Something like natural Born Killer would fit right in with the games kill or be killed game play. However, that style of game is completely different

Tom, I can tell you thta I support you creating a fully 3d sound and all that engine. I like a challenge and the more complex the game, the more it holds my attention. There are always those who dislike change or something foreign. There are many who critasize the IPhone for being a touch screen and too difficult to use. I too also feel as though the accessible games we have are a bit disappointing. No disrespect to my fellow game developers, but there really isn't anything that is really new or innovative to speak of besides Rail Racer. For the most part accessible games tend to fall into two catagories. Either they are simple board and card games, or an arcade game type theme. Personally, I find the options rather limitting compared to what was available to me before I lost my sight, and is the main reason I began writing accesible games myself. As for the GMA engine I have to disagree with you. Besides the fact it is a bit old it still is one of the best tools an accessible developer can use. It is an FPS game engine, and in the right hands it could be used to create some killer accessible games. We have already seen what it can do with Shades of Doom and Tank Commander, and I think with some updates it should be able to create games more or less on par with Star Trek Elite Force, Star Wars Jedi Knight, etc. In some respects it isn't the fault of the tool here, but perhaps it is the developer's lack of imagination, creativity, or experience with full blown FPS games here. As for the Star Wars game I was working on I had to put that project on hold for a couple of reasons. First, I am still trying to work with Lucas Film on obtaining a Star Wars license. Second, when Alchemy closed up I took over their games and projects which I want to complete before returning to my own original projects. We have no fighting games, no sports games we can play without some A.I. making it not real; even though the 2nd best player in the world in Mortal Combat is Blind!! We should of taken that initiative and created some type of fighting game at least similar to Mortal.. Are blind people not sports fans? would we like to box? run the football? aim the pitch in a baseball game? even fly a F-16 in combat.. Sim's are O.K. Hi Charles, As a matter of fact that's almost exactly how I am. I'll play something like SoundRTS for a week or two, get burned out, play Chess or Uno, get burned out, and play something else. Eventually, the cycle will start over. It is actually difficult for a game to keep my attention for very long. Take Sryth for example. While I truely enjoy the game I go through spells where I play it almost every day, and then there will be a spell where I don't do anything with my character for a month. Then, one weekend I'll find myself board, login, and play actively for a week or so before growing board with it again. This so-called cycle is what makes it hard for me to complete a game like Jim's NFL Football game. I'll start out a season make it through 6 or 10 games and get board off my rear. Perhaps a month later I'll start playing and resume the season again losing my momentum and drive to make it to the Super Bowl. I've litterally had a game of football last a year before i made it to the Super Bowl, because even though I like the game it can't keep my attention for very long. I'll play a couple of games and not pick it up again for weeks . Although, I am pretty sure why this happens. The bottom line is there aren't very many accessible games that truly satisfies me. Before I lost my vision I was into games like Tomb Raider, Jedi Knight, the original Heroes Might and Magic, Mech Warrior, and various other games that were out in the mid 1990's. There are very few accessible games that really compare. Shades of Doom and GMA Tank Commander are the closest I can think of which is why I purchased both as soon as I could. I don't personally get the same entertainment or satisfaction out of playing Uno, Hearts, Aliens in the Outback, etc. The games are good in their own way, but not my cup of tea. Smile. Even games like miriani and star conquest where the killing is indirect, its all still grinding in my opinion. The difference in a lot of gamers is that there's different levels of grinding that people can deal with. Some people can play alter aeon all day and grind to their hearts content, even though the combat is hardly descriptive at all and grinding gets rather slow at higher levels. Some people need the more advanced miriani to get their grinding fix and earn their place on a game. Me personally, I generally don't like grinding in any form, but instead look for well-described combat or attack skills, for example: New moon, discworld, unofficial squaresoft mud. I also look for advanced mechanics, godwars2, project bob, etc. Very, very few muds interest me for long, and even the ones that do I get bored of eventually no matter how powerful I get, hence my ripping of miriani a few days back. So I guess I'm in the H and S camp, muds that allow me to log on, kill something or, things, for half a hour, and log off without having to think about it till the next time I want to play- and for that, Aeon and Cyberassault are great examples. Well, as long as you don't get into the clan themes on Aeon, you would be fine. I used to enjoy the shadowrun muds, both awakened world and awake, but then both muds required so much of me that I decided it was time to move on. I still have bad dreams of the awake days where I had to sit in front of the comp for 6 hours just to RP something through! No one ever kicked ass by saying I can't. Muds are, by enlarge, quite accessible. There are any number of mud and pure telnet clients out there, and they are free to. They work quite well, with only minor adjustments required, for screen readers. Muds provide a text means of interaction with others, both sighted and blind, and friends can be made on muds. I, personally, enjoy the hackslash muds, especially those which allow a character to grow. By character growth, I mean, in both stats and levels, with a character becoming more and more powerful over time. There are good muds out there depending upon a person's interest. Although the mud, as an internet passtime is becoming less popular, muds, in one form or another, will be around for some time to come, and the demise of the mud, in my humble opinion, will be a closing of a chapter which has allowed blind gamers to participate, with little modifications to software on an even playing field with all mud players. For all the intellectual types out there, the greatest game out there is life---its full of puzzles, and there is no hackslash, except, perhaps, if,, one is in Iraq, or Afghanistan. or, perhaps, if one is in the real world, where the hackslash is, rather, intrinsic. So, I guess, if one is looking for a good mud, it can be found on planet earth where the telnet client, then, is us. No address or port number is required I like a good hackslash mud for my relaxation: Its almost as invigarating as a good cup of coffee. So, I am breaking the mold, so to speak. I like a good hackslash mud, with unlimited levels and (if possible), unlimitede stats. Two good hackslash muds out there are: telnet://dune.servint.com:6789 (which is Dune mud) and the other is Dragon Swords mud

Re: [Audyssey] Does anyone play materia magica?
Hey Mike, well what sort of things do you mean to keep it from getting boring? the problem wit muds is that they are open ended and all usually have some redundency. In Materia lets see, you level of course. You can do this either by killing, getting marks, questing etc. once you are leveled, there are runs. runs are tasks that usually require a form and you go through a bunch of tasks to take on a very strong and hard mob who gives nice rewards either in eq or gold or things like that. My husband does form runs all the time and is great with them. He would help give suggestions on working in forms better. You can obtaina ship and kill pirates for gold and exp. I haven't done this yet but my husband has found a way to work with the ascii map. When you archon you get hunters periodically. you can quest any time. search for marks. another mud I am trying is asylum. I don't know exactly how to describe it other then that it appears to be very puzzle oriented. I messed with it years ago but am trying it more now. the combat is very primative and many parts are confusing still to me but I like the Idea of trying to figure out the puzzles or quests as they call them. have you tried using the survey command to help get an idea of where things are? with most things, you can get an idea of where they are located. there are some later in the game which ou have to use sextent points but most are surveyable. In the beginning it can be daunting. It may take patients. I had ppl help me a lot. I explained that I was blind and coulnd't use the graphical maps and that helped. Re: [Audyssey] Does anyone play materia magica?
it is a matter of timing. I don't know how to best explain it though. basically, you should start your casting of a spell at the beginning of a round so that it ends after it. If you do it in the middle then you mess up your next round and will lose an attack and defense as well. Another thing to note is that some spells are 2 second while other are 3 or 4 second spells. each round is 3 seconds. so if you cast a 3 second spell, like iceball or harm at the beginning of the round you will see the finishing casting message right before your next round begins. it is a matter of practice. hey dark, you are correct. the only reagents which are hard to come by are astrals. those are used for more complex spells, not your every day ones. now, resurrecting costs an astral as do a couple others but the main use for them is to resurrect someone. some mobs have astrals which randomly repop on them. when you are an archon, you get them more frequently from killing hunters. heh, archons need to stock them so they can help fellow archons who die from a hunter. lol Kellie and my lovable Lady J. I can create a new char to help you with the forest, it can be tricky if you don't know where you are going. there are other mark quest things you can get before leaving lasler. the lake one is a new one and a tough one. I haven't gotten that mark since it didn't exist when aralyn went through. but send me a tell when you are on and I will create a char to help you out. Kellie and my lovable Lady J. kind of a mix. I guess mostly hack and slash though I try to do the rp part. I prefer rp and they have questing and marks witha story line but many of the players are more into killing things to gain rewards and some like to player kill. what is nice is that pk is restricted to certain areas. I have over 3100 quests that I have done to get rewards and 92 marks and there are many others. It isn't as rp oriented as I would like but I still enjoy it. Kellie and my lovable Lady J. Re: [Audyssey] A note about Materia Magica
you just buy reagents in shhops though. they aren't that hard to obtain. And to really play the game to the fullest you will eventually be all classes, if you stick with the game anyway. When you pick a class, you advance to level 60. You can quest during your time there or receive marks, which are like miniquests where you receive practices, and quest points and ex p points and the name of the marks shows on your list of marks. I have 92 marks so far and there are many more I still need. However, I digress. After you feel that you have everything done in your current class you can go to a quest master and request a new class. when you do this, you then go to second class and again work your way to 60. You will retain your skills from our prior class as well as gain skills from your current one. You will have a total of 4 classes when you come to hero which is level 240. It becomes well rounded because you will have a fighter class, cleric, mage and thief class. I am ranger, valkyrie, priest, bard. The final class you become after hero is archon, which I am now. to do this you have to undertake the domain of arbacess. This is a condensed idea of how to go about things. if anyone is more interested look for aralyn in game and I will help as best as I can with questions. Kellie and my lovable Lady J. Re: [Audyssey] A note about Materia Magica
rangers are actually considered a mage. in the game here is how things are split up. the different fighter classes are as follows. barbarian who specialize in offensive fighting arts and can use axe and get battle rage and bash. palidin, who are the holy fighters. along with the basic fighting abilities they also receive some curing spells. cavalier, they are masters of mounted combat and are the only class to use the lance. They are also a male only class. Valkyrie, a female only class whose specialty is defense. they are the only class who get second defense. Meaning too chances to evade attacks of an enemy. for the mage class there is ranger, a class who along with spells, gain some fighting skills as well. since they are suppose to be forest dwelling they are survival skills. they can track and mix herbs. psionic, the mental mages in the world of allyria. All the spells they use are mental and it can be nice since an opponent doesn't know when you are casting a spell nor can their spells be silenced. wizard, the adepts on all different types of spells, they have many in their colection, but not many fighting skills since their pursuits were of the arcane nature. monk, these fall under the mage catagory but also share fighting skills like the ranger. they get bashh and martial arts. And they share herbalism in common with the ranger. the different clerics are priest, who possess hhealing spells and other benevolent spells such as resurrect but also harmful spells such as poison, plague harm and others. druid, who are the lovers of nature and use the elements to heal as well as cast harmful spells on enomies. shaman, are similar to a priest but have some skils unique to themselves such as elemental shield. They also are the only cleric class to get bash. witch, sometimes a hard class to play, because their only means to heal is by leaching life of the enemy. They have many malevolent spells to cast on an opponent though. hex, jinx, disjunction and others. there are only 2 thief classes and I often wonder if that is ever going to be increased. You can be either a rogue, who can often evade aggressive mobs, track or snare unweary players for killing and backstab and others. or bard who are masters with music. Using instraments to weave a spell, some for good of themselves and others to bring harm on another. That is a not so brief descrition of the classes. lol And I will mention about herbalism under this. herbalism isn't related to the use of reagents. for herbalism which is a very powerful skill in the game, you use sprigs that can be bought in apothecaries shops in the various towns. you use a mortar and pestle to mix them. You can create cure mixes, such as cure light, cure disease, cure poison, which are nice because they can be eaten during battle. You can mix calm so that if you're in a no magic room or silenced you can eat the herb to stop a battle you otherwise are unable to flee from do to other reasons. you can also create high explosive, blind, fatigue and such that can be good to use against an opponent. There are others but I am just mentioning some of the more common ones. Kellie and my lovable Lady J. Count me among the gamers who want to see more complex games. As I said before, the only time I fight realism is when it detracts from either difficulty or challenge factor. I both play mainstream games, mostly one on one fighting, and have watched my brother play several mainstream games, everything from FPS to RPG. I agree we need more games like that. More games with advanced physics and power behind the engine. We have some good audiogames as it stands now, but there are still genres either left uncovered or that have games, but not nearly to the advanced stage that modern gaming has come to. In fact, the Genesis Engine can do more than you've seen, but since I am currently involved in a side-scroller we can't take advantage of its more advanced features and game play. If people are put off now I'm a bit interested how they will deal with the engine at it's best. I suppose just something simple as items in a dark room being invisible is just all a bit new to some. I'm thinking out of the box, or more precisely more realistic. One thing I hope to do with my Genesis Engine is bring awareness to blind gamers that we don't have to be stuck with simple games. We could have games as complex as those our sighted counterparts play if we just have well trained developers to do it, and of course the financial backing to get sounds, music, to go with the programming too. I don't say this to be disrespectful to my fellow accessible game developers, but when i showed up on the accessible games scene and saw what was available I thought to myself I could do better. Plus seeing a bunch of Space Invader style knock offs, card games, just wasn't my interest area. I wanted games like those I was beginning to play on the PC before I went blind, and that is where USA Games is headed. Re: [Audyssey] mota demo
To true. I enjoy to play the simpler games from time to time. But I want more of a variety. What I really want I am not sure I will ever see and that is an epic fantasy rpg. Magic swords, quests, but all towards an end goal. I play muds which have some of this element but they are open ended. It is a living world with a basic story line but nothing more. I want something like final fantasy or Lunar or star ocean. There are several things that can be done through the game. As well and places that have to be explored and puzzles to solve but an end goal. To save the world from some dark evil force usually. lol Kellie and my lovable Lady J. Too many keys and featuresto remember result in a less fluid and enjoyable experience. Remember the player is going to be jumping around, killing monsters and scooping treasure. Are they going to take the time out to remember to blow out their torch (or hit enter to pick up an item, holster their weapon to jump over a pit)? I agree with you too in that it is not realy a one person job. rpg's are so much more complex do to the in depth plot and inventive things that have to be thought of. Its really a shame that it's nearly impossible for a one man team to pull something like this off, but in truth, it really is. At least by todays gaming standards. Personally I'd be more than willing to settle for a game like the classic final fantasy, where there was no voice acting, no pain cries or realism even, just pure illogical goodness. In this case you could just use sapi to read text, and get through the plot just fine. Even a game like that, with flashy sounding skills and spells, summons, weapons, armor and accessories to obtain, etc, in my opinion, would be beyond awesome. In fact the lack of vidio, all audio, could be seen as a plus by some gamers. After all what is more terrifying than being alone in the dark with something evil after you? Bottom line I guess a lot would depend on the developers skill in creating a very spooky audio environment. For me the music wouldn't be a big problem. Hi ya, I've had a wii for about 18 months now, and overall I'd say it was worth the price. The menus can be a pain until you get used to it, because you have to point at them, but this is helped by the fact the Wiimote vibrates as you go over an item, so once you get the touch down, you can memorize the layout and away ya go. Mostly I've enjoyed the sport games that come with it, though usually I play these with sighted friends, and the Wii Fit which is great for excersize. Not all items with the fit are accessible, but a good bit is, including the yoga excersizes, which are of good benefit. I bought Madden football and Mortal Kombat as well. I've memorized a lot of the playbook layout for madden, but don't think i could navigate the menus of that one without sighted friends, and mortal kombat was just impossible for me to play for the most part, but frankly I didn't give it a lot of time once i realized i couldn't tell which side of my opponent i was on. Re: [Audyssey] maps for alder aeon and materia magica
There are not text maps for materia magica at this time. I am sure we could work on that though. The best way to get to know the place it by exploring. You really do become familiar with it. I was over welmed at first. but... I now know most of the areas so far. though there is a lot I have still to discover. smiles Kellie and my lovable Lady J. Hi Dark, Quote Again though, a case of a generic fantasy setting, -- in fact the! grand daddy of modern fantasy settings, complete with probably the most complex history ever written, and some absolutely beautiful writing. End quote Yes, and that, for me, is part of the attraction to Lord of the Rings and even Star Wars. The back story, history, religions, etc are so detailed you can almost imagine it being a real world even though it is all imagination. As a creative writer of sorts myself i can well appreciate the hard work and hours spent in drafting that degree of detail required to create an epic story like that. Quote I don't know as much about starwars as I'd like. I've of course seen (and own), all the films, but haven't really had the chance to get as much into the extended universe, backstory and alternate worlds, mostly due to lack of availability of said novels in accessible format in the uk. End quote Well, I can help with that. I know a guy who has a sendspace folder just full of Star wars extended universe books in mp3 and ogg format. If you want I can look up the address and you can download and read Star Wars to your hearts desire. Quote I do like finding out about a world's own unique nature, backstory and quests. That's again something I love about Sryth, the massive amounts of info on everything, even generic enemy types). End quote I do as well. In an RPG game it is like being inside an interactive story. One in which you get to guide in large part how the story unfolds. Depending on your race and class type how you approach a problem might be completely different in nature. For example, a band of heroes come to the end of a dungeon and find the exit blocked by a cave in. A barbarian character might try to use his incredible strength to move the debree away from the exit. A dwarf use to mining might try to mine his way through the debree. A wizard character might try a destruction spell or some other kind of magic to move the debree out of the way. What ever the case your actions are somewhat dependant on your character roll. Anyway, the more detailed the story is the more you can just slip into that roll and begin to think and act like your character. heck, I've even heard of some guild members who have gotten so obsessed with their character rolls that they left the table top RPG gaming and dress up like their character and do play out live inactments whenever possible. Personally, i think that is going a bit out there, but on the other hand I can see how it could be fun. Take a weekend tramping through the woods dressed up as a medieval wizard, knight, elf, etc battling guys dressed up as orcs, goblins, ogres, or some other such thing. I guess that would feel more real than sitting around a table drinking cofee and letting the dm guide you through yet another adventure story. Quote Basic rules for various settings could be fun, but I'd personaly rather have one incredibly detailed setting with huge amounts of history and plot than a lot of small ones which are essentially the same game with different text. End quote Again I agree. It is more realistic if all of the events happen in and around the same world with connecting characters etc. Especially, if your adventure is a subplot in a much larger plot. If there is a boss creature that can only be killed with a special weapon you might hav to first undertake a quest to locate and find that special weapon or item which could take a long time to complete. Then, after you obtain it you might have to seak out and find the boss which might take a while. As a result you might wind up with many smaller adventures that are directly and indirectly attatched to the larger plot at hand. Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts about new text adventures.
lol The mideval setting is popular amongst gamers but there aren't a lot of games that are fantasy based for accessible use. I know there are muds, I play those. But I mean single player fantasy things. I haven't played much interactive fiction maybe I should try it out and see if that has the same. I don't like using the sapi speech though, ddrives me crazy with the basic voices. But the type of game I want is the epic quest sort. The ones where there is an end goal but there are smaller tasks that lead up to that end goal. lol That would take so long to code though and to think of a great story line. when I could see I liked final fantasy and that was on the original nintendo. I would watch friends play and participate with decisions on the later versions of ff. I liked lunar, star ocean. That sort is so fun. So I guess that is why the fantasy theme still is what I would love to have. Kellie and my lovable Lady J. Hi Dark, I see what you mean. Despite hundreds of books, movies, and games on the subject the medieval setting is still quite popular among gamers. Heck I've red the Lord of the Rings series at least five times because I personally find that story interesting and fun to read. It is easy to get caught up in the magic of Middle Earth and its age of heroes. As far as RPG storylines goes there are lots of them to choose from. There is everything from your typical medieval fantacy to a Sci-Fi universe like Star Wars or Star Trek. Having played a few games in the Star wars RPG games those can be quite fun picking a race of alien and then training up to be a jedi Knight or being a bounty hunter, smuggler, etc. Very cool. One thing to keep in mind is once I create one RPG game it is possible to take the same classes, mod them, and come up with another RPG game with a different story line. That is what object oriented programming is all about. In stead of sstarting with say 1000 gold coins a Sci-Fi game will start out with 1000 galactic credits. A Wizard class can be modified to be a Jedi class converting the magic spells in to force abilities. You see how that works. dark wrote: Well, with me tom it's more a stylistic thing than a particular plot or setting. I love exploring and participating in the world, with it's own history, lores and places. It just seems to me there have been so many medaeval set fantasies, in books, films rpgs etc, that that sort of world is just becoming rather familiar in it's style and so losing a bit of the new and fresh exploration. Ditto with the bog standard sterriotypical fantasy races. That's why I was suggesting a change in setting. On the other hand, anything can be new and fresh if done well enough, so this wouldn't be a non-starter as far as I'm concerned. As reguards the Dc thing, superheros wouldn't be my first choice of setting, I prefer different worlds as I said, but for the past year I've been playing a tabletop mutants and masterminds game, which has proved incredibly fun indeed. As I said, with me it's more a case of what the game is like than where it is set I think. Beware the Grue! I love the idea of a stand along rpg. Writing is essential in making that interesting for me. But I know that you are creative and will have a great story Tom. I think that having sounds and music would be nice but it isn't necessary for a good game. It is more for atmosphere and such. On the muds I play I have a lot of osunds set. Not just for indications of things happening but often for environment too. But I would be very excited aobut any rpg. There aren't really any of those in the accessible game community and I wish there was. Those are my favorite type of game and there are very few of those around. Kellie and my lovable Lady J. [Audyssey] dragonsword sounds will work
Hey Michael, I have been playing around with dragonsword and I have gotten the sounds to work. I will do my best to explain how just let me know if ou need me to clarify anything. I read the online directions on dragonsword.com how to put the sounds in but it is slightly different for our client. You will go into the vip mud folder and then to the sounds folder. Under this folder you will create the ds directory and inside that create the action subdirectory. so, essentially creating a folder within a folder. You will then unzip the sounds into the action directory. Then once you connect to the game remember to enable msp sounds and you should be set. it is working just fine on my end now. Hey all, I know there are many people who have asked questions or don't understand the use of vip mud. I am willing to try and put together a tutorial for it since I use it frequently. I can't promise how good it will be written since I am not the greatest at writing but I understand vip mud a least a bit. Re: [Audyssey] vip mud
I kept getting frustrated when I first started. It is like the text fiction games only in real time with a multy user player base. The best way to get it, is patients, practice, help from others and reading the help files as well as going through the mud school if the particular one you play has it. If it is a good dmud you can ask for assistance on there and ppl will answer any questions you have at the time. I play materia magica and that is how I really got comfortable. Each mud has their own way of entering commands however the basic idea is the same. some of the basic general commands that cross over are the directional commands, up down, east west, etc. open or close on object, such as a door. look for looking in a room. That can be expanded to look at something as well. kill for attacking something flee for running from a battle. There are many many more commands, some specific to the mud you try. How much detail required to make a command work also depends on the mud. I didn't know anyone when I started on MM. I read help files and just asked questions and slowly but surely I learned it. You won't understand all there is to know right away. you become mor knowledgeable as you go along. I really urge to ask for assistance in game as well as reading help files since each game can varry so much. Kellie and my lovable Lady J. Re: [Audyssey] vip mud
scripts are used to keep track of things in the mud you are playing. i don't know all if it since I haven't tried really creating my own. But they can be simple or more complex depending on the desired result. I know of a player who kept track of each time she used a skill or a spell. so that when she finally got a percentage better, she could hit a key and see how many times she used it before receiving the better. I know there are a lot of ones out there but can't think of any more examples. Kellie and my lovable Lady J. Good news. Liam got a full time job writing scripts for a company. The bad news. This leaves me with virtually no time for writing computer games. My day looks like this. wake up at 5. eat breakfast, and then make myself look presentable. Get in some sort of vehicle at 7 to go to the train. get onthe trian at 7:45. Get to the city my office is in at like 8:30. walk to the office. in any kind of weather condition. And btw. it snows here a lot. then from 9 till 4:30 I am a slave to the corperate world. I get on the train at 5, get home at 5:45. I check email, then collapse. I'm not exactly sure what the future will look like for LWorks. It is possible the company may only need me part time, but.. For right now. I'm going in on a daily basis. I will do the best I can to update existing games, and do what I need to do. But it's goign to be rough on me. I certainly will not close up shop. it's not fair to the people who have supported me all these years, but I want to let everyone know what's going on. It's only fair to keep people informed. Re: [Audyssey] Mainstream games was sl accessibility contact details
Tom, I can not wait til your games are out. I feel the same way about the accessible game market. I love a lot of the games that are currently out. But, I so wish for a game of a different sort. I really would love to see a rpg but being that they can be so intensive I am not sure if I will ever see that come to pass. But I appreciate all the work you put in and can't wait to play the games you create. *smile* Kellie and my lovable Lady J. canine welfare Technician. For me personally I tend to find the majority of audio games produced for the blind do not hold my personal interest. We have plenty of card games, board games, Space Invader type clones, but nothing really like the games you can get for the XBox or Playstation these days. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with card games, board games, etc but it seams to be the main focus of audio game developers. The main reason I have been working on a full 3D game engine for the blind, fairly similar to mainstream FPS engines, is that I would like to see more accessible games made like Halo, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Jedi Knight, Gear Wars, etc. Those games really hold my interest, and I will sit for hours trying to play the mainstream versions, and if there was an accessible game made like that I'd certainly be spilling my pockets to get it. However, at this point in time I find myself the only blind accessible game developer creating a game engine that can make games on the par with the mainstream games. Orin wrote: Most people are at least trying mainstream games, or attempting to. Wanna know why? Think about this. When in audio games did we have the last big rlease? Rail Racer which, as of now was released a year ago. Heck, I don't even know what the last big release was. [Audyssey] question about VipMud
Hey all, First off I used to be a member of this list a long while back though I didn't often post, but have just returned. I have a question that I hope someone can help me answer. I have downloaded VipMud and am excited about it. I have read aobut it and it sounds like it is going to be awesome. There is one thing I am not sure if it can be done, and if so how. It is simple and may sound silly but I can't figure out how to to stop my typing interupting text that is coming from a mud. I was on Materia Magica. And things start scrolling on the screen, but the moment I start typing something the speech coming from the mud is silenced. I like being able to stop it with the control key, but don't want whenever I type to do the same thing. GMud keeps reading even when I am typing and I prefer that so that I am sure I am not missing something. Or if someone sends me a tell as I start to type I don't want it to be cut off in mid sentence. I have tried looking in the speech settings and for some reason no matter which I set I can't seem to get it to work the way I want. I know this is winded, but is there a way to stop it from interupting? If so, how? All responses would be greatly appreciated. Take care, Kellie and my lovable Lady J.
