Re: [Audyssey] Pontes Backgammon

Hi Dark,

I think I may have found a bug, or maybe I just don't know how to do
something. I f I pick up a piece with spacebar, then realize I don't want to
move it, I can put it back where it was, but it seems to take one of my dice
rolls. I also think it can let me move backward. I'll check on both of
those to see if I was merely imagining things, though.

the difficulty does increase.

My only real problem with the game, and it's not really a problem, is that
after choosing starting colours at the start of a match, your pretty much
stuck with that colour however many games you play. For variety I'd rather
like to see it alternate myself, or perhaps there be a colour choice after
each match.

This is however a miner issue and I believe Manu will fix it at some point.

[Audyssey] Pontes Backgammon

2012-08-18 Thread Loravara
Hi,

This has been under development for a while.

Before I purchase it, I have a few questions.

Are you likely to find many other players on-line?

At this point, without registering you can only complete a game on easy.
Are the settings for the other games actually harder, more challenging to
play?

Any known, nasty bugs that I should be aware of?

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] N A Soft is back and I'm looking for some testers with Braille displays.

2012-08-04 Thread Loravara
Hi Nick,

I would be happy to help test for you, as time permits.

I have Braille displays at home and at work, and I read Braille daily, for
programming, and for both personal and professional reading.

Unlike others, I find Braille to be of daily value, and generally prefer it
over speech for things like programming, proofreading, and for nonfiction
reading.

I often lament that games don't come with Braille support. Although I tend
to play card games, even those often don't have Braille support, and I get
very tired of synthesized speech after a while.

Hi Thomas.
I understand that most of us don't have access to a braille display but some
do and most audio games dont enable death blind players to get involved.
Also I'm not using the display to show braille in its normal format, I'm
using the display more like a screen with moving shapes and representations
of they playing area.

The reason I asked if braille displays have been used in accessible games
before is I wanted to see weather Dotris is going to be as unique as I think
it is going to be. I'm very aware that if I was trying to make any money out
of this restricting my user base to those that have access to a braille
display wouldn't be a good idea but this is more about the programming
challenge and the chance to do something a little bit unusual as well as
raising a bit of money for charity. I'm also trying in my own small way to
encourage the use of braille, a skill I worry that a lot of blind people,
including myself at one point in my life, think to be a completely
antiquated and pointless skill when so many things now speak to us. A view I
now disagree with.

thanks
Nick

Hi Ryan,

Can you send one of those displays over here? :D.

I'm afraid I disagree on the rehab front, sinse in the Uk it depends
basically on the generosity of the individual counsel during time in
education, and then access to work will only buy you things that access your
work directly 9assuming your in work).

so I'm afraid I disagree that there are more out there to be supported.

Until they become A, cheaper than buying a small car, and B, able to show
more information, I'm not convinced on their value for gaming, indeed
I'm becoming rather disolussioned with braille as a writing medium full
stop, and that from someone who has read braille sinse he was five.

 Hi Nick,
Thankfully you're not developing a side scroller, arcade game, or FPS
title, so you don't have to worry about that. Just because very little
use has been made of Braille displays in the past 8 years doesn't mean
you shouldn't give it a go. I would venture a guess that there are
actually quite a few Braille displays out there. Rehab agencies
purchase them for a lot of people here in the states, and some
countries overseas--especially in Europe--will actually give free
Braille displays to blind people. My wife and I own two between the
two of us, and I have access to four more of them at work.
Audio Tetris has been tried; it didn't work very well. Music audio
Tetris has been tried; it didn't work very well either. The spatial
implications of a tactile Tetris would be phenomenal to work with. I
think you have a winner of an idea here.
Good luck to you in your efforts.
 All the best,
 Ryan

[Audyssey] Braille Dice

Hi,

A friend just forwarded me a link to a Kickstarter project for Braille dice.
Oh, we've long been able to read 6-sided dice, but these are for many of the

They're trying to raise $11,000 to get this underway.

[Audyssey] Seeking Information on MUDs

2012-06-26 Thread Loravara
Hi,

For years, I played on AmberMUSH and a few Pern MUSHes. Then real life took
over and I disappeared from the MUSH scene for a while.

I'm not sure there are really MUSHes left. Text-based role-playing in that
fashion seems to have been replaced by World of Warcraft and other MMORPGs.

I know there are still some MUDs out there, but I've always had the
impression that these were more combat-oriented games, with a lot less
role-playing going on.

I have a few questions for those willing to help:

Can you recommend good MUDs? Are there any that have a good balance between
role-playing and combat? How many users does the typical MUD have at one
time? Are there opportunities for building and coding as there were on the
MUSH?

For combat themed MUDs, is speed a high priority? If so, what is the best
client for us to achieve that as blind players? I use JAWS 13, Eloquence
and a Braille display .When I was MUSHing, I used SimpleMU, which worked
well. I was able to code it to do some cool things, and tinker with JAWS to
make it read well. I think I saw some references to VIPMud. Is it better
for Mudding?

Are there MUD clients that will work on the iPhone, and what are their
pluses and minuses? If I play on the iPhone, I will certainly want to use
the Braille display for input. Is this likely to pose a problem?

That's probably enough to get started.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Nancy

Re: [Audyssey] Redistributing RPG Source Books

2012-06-15 Thread Loravara
Hi Thomas,

I have a suggestion for you. Have you contacted the publisher of these Star
Wars books? In the past, I have made arrangements with publishers of both
role-playing game books and computer programming books. In cases where they
didn't normally sell electronic copies of their books, they agreed to sell
me a copy of the printed book at its normal price. For that price, they
would throw in an electronic copy as well. Some publishers have then asked
me to sign NDA agreements, essentially certifying that I would not share the
electronic materials, and I'm fine with that.

And if I'm not interested in the printed book, I can usually find someone
local to kick in some money toward the purchase, and they get the printed
book and I get the electronic copy.

Not all publishers agree to such an idea. But most have, and most have been
quite courteous about it.

However, if I agree not to share, I will not share, because I want them to
be willing to make such arrangements for future purchases. After all,

Hi Al,

I'm talking about the newer d20 Star Wars source books and campaign guides.
As you might already know the d20 campaign books and source guides covers
the rebel era, the clone wars era, and the New Jedi Order era. I've even
heard they are working on releasing a new expansion set for the Old Republic

books I'm not bothering with the old West End stuff.

Cheers!

Hello all,
As I read it, mahjong would be a nice candidate game for the playroom.

However, I don't know it at all. From what I remember, mahjong was only a
solitaire where you had to match tiles to reveal other ones and finally
clear the all field. I didn't know that it was a true game.

If someone can point me to detailled rules and a complete list of tile
types, colors, numbers, etc. found in a ordinary deck with the number of
each, I might be able to try something

Tootle Tiles? Wow. It sounds like a kid's game. Smile

Actually, mahjong is usually a four player game. And there are many
variations, from Chinese official to American to Japanese riichi.

One of the complexities in many versions is the number of fan, or ways to
score points. In Chinese official there are 81 different ways.

I did find a mahjong dictionary in the iPhone app store that is very
readable. It gives you information on how to achieve each of these 81
scoring options. You can also score your hand with it. I may contact the
author to ask that he make that part accessible as well.

But it isn't the game itself, but more a tool for those playing the game.

I'd like to be able to play against the computer or against human opponents
as others do.

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] Accessible Checkers, Mahjong

2012-06-02 Thread Loravara
LOL.

The core technique is similar. On your turn, you draw a tile from the wall,
which is similar to the face down draw pile for a game of rummy. You then
look at it and see if it fits into the pattern you're trying to create with
your current tiles. If it does, keep it, otherwise discard it, unless you
think someone else is collecting that tile, then discard something else.

In rummy, you can also normally draw the top card from the discard pile. In
mahjong, you can only draw the last tile discarded if it does one of a few
things: would create a three of a kind or four of a kind for you, or create
a chow (sequence of three), but only if it was discarded by the player who
drew just before you, and not either of the other two players.

In rummy, you normally form either three or four of a kind, or sequences.
In mahjong, you do much of this, too, but there are 81 ways to score points,
including hands that are composed entirely of green tiles, or a hand of
seven pairs, etc.

Does this help, or make it clear as mud?

Re: [Audyssey] Accessible Checkers, Mahjong

2012-06-02 Thread Loravara
Hi Dark,

What is also ironic is that mahjong is not an ancient game. This
misconception isn't spread just by APH, though; we see it in much of the
literature of mahjong. It actually came into being in the 1850's in China,
and was brought to the U.S. in about 1910.

There's actually a good book from Bookshare on the game. It's written by
Tom Sloper, and is called The Red Dragon and the West Wind, I believe.

Hi.

You mentioned a game called Mahjong solitare. Being a matching game for a
single player, I bet toodle tiles is based on the rules of that, rather than
the rules of actual mahjong, though it's a little bad that aph claime! it to
be based on the ancient chinese game in their documentation.

The real problem I think, is none of the programmers who have made really
good computer adaptations of other card, board, or puzzle games have
experience with Mahjong, it being a much less popular game in the west, so
couldn't write an adaptation for the computer, indeed I seem to
remember in the faq for the spoonbill games Ian humphries saying that he
didn't have enough knolidge of Mahjong to make a Bg version.

there are of course plenty of inaccessible ones, indeed I was quite stunned
when i viewed the full! list of snes games including Japanese only releases,
and found just how many mahjong games were released for the console, but
that doesn't really help any visually impared players who want to either
play, or learn the game.

This is a shame. I learned Euchre and spades from the blind adrenaline
versions, and really enjoy eucher, and I learnt backgammon from the pontes
backgammon game and have just bought a tactile board to play with friends,
so a computerized accessible Mahjong would also be a nice way to introduce
the game to people like myself who hadn't played it before but might well
enjoy it.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Accessible Checkers, Mahjong

2012-06-02 Thread Loravara
Hi Dark,

You are exactly right. When I teach a new game to someone, I begin by
trying to compare it to something they know. If they're familiar with
rummy, then it's a bit less overwhelming to learn mahjong, because you have
points of familiarity.

So it isn't really an oxymoron, because I think of those as two opposing
concepts: military and intelligence always being the first thing to come to
mind.

So I was just trying to start with a familiar concept, and then if I were
going to teach someone the game, we'd start to explore how mahjong differed
from rummy.

It's not an oxymoron, accept that it is! :D.

I think however what was meant here is that Mahjong follows a similar basic
structure to rummy in that players take turns exchanging or disguarding
cards (tyles), in order to get some predetermined goal in their hand, which
is also the basic structure of 31's (also called stop the bus), and some
similar games.

I suspect though in Mahjong, the method by which the exchange and disgarding
happens, the targit scoring hands and indeed how they are scored are rather
different from those in rummy.

I could be wrong, I just remember hereing somewhere that mahjong did involve
exchange, disgard and scoring type gameplay.

Beware the grue!

 You confuse me with this:

Regular mahjong plays a lot like rummy ... except where it doesn't, and
there are a lot of ways it doesn't.

So, does it play like Rummy? or not. That's an oxymoronic statement like
It's the same, but different. (grin)

Hi Dark,

You are probably right. I've never played Toodle Tiles myself, but by the
childish sounding name I seriously doubt it is anything like Mahjong despite
what their documentation says. APH always strikes me as treating blind users
as either extremely old, or just barely above infantile. So its probably not
what we expect.

However, as for writing a Mahjong game I don't have a good enough grasp of
the game to develop it myself without some research. However, Linux has a
couple of good open source versions which I might hack for an accessible
Mahjong game. If I can get the basic rules/mechanics and the AI used I could
in theory build a Windows version with Sapi support.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Accessible Checkers, Mahjong

2012-06-02 Thread Loravara
Hi Dark,

Good questions. The tiles stand on their ends facing you. It isn't at all
precarious because the tiles are fairly thick, and so are steady and won't
topple over. A sighted person just scans their tiles and organizes them how
they wish. Most of the time your hand is concealed, so no one else can see
the tiles because they're facing you. You receive more points when you go
out if all of your tiles have remained concealed.

But if I call for someone's discard, then I must display the tiles in my
hand that match the tile I just called for. Now I turn the tiles that I had
to reveal so that everyone can see them, but I don't have to reveal the rest
of my hand. This is one reason that many players don't call for discarded
tiles; they must reveal that portion of the hand that would use them, and
they get fewer points if they match all of their tiles because a portion of
their hand is now displayed.

By the way, I am currently playing mahjong with cards. Most sighted people
don't use the cards unless they're traveling, and cannot conveniently carry
a mahjong set. The mahjong set I just bought weighs about 18 pounds and
might fit in a backpack. My intent is to use Dymo tape to Braille the top of
the tiles so that I can just draw my finger across the top of the tiles.

Unfortunately bookshare isn't available in the Uk, so I can't read that

isn't entirely wrong.

Just one question, if you are making a pattern, which presumably you
actually lay out in front of you, couldn't people see what you are doing,
and so not disgard something? and if you can only take a disgard when it
will be helpful, and not for instance on the basis that you have one of

 Hi Dark,

What is also ironic is that mahjong is not an ancient game. This
misconception isn't spread just by APH, though; we see it in much of the
literature of mahjong. It actually came into being in the 1850's in
 China,
and was brought to the U.S. in about 1910.

There's actually a good book from Bookshare on the game. It's written by
Tom Sloper, and is called The Red Dragon and the West Wind, I believe.

Re: [Audyssey] BGT competition - Types of Games

2011-12-28 Thread Loravara
Good Afternoon,

The possible BGT competition has me thinking, and I have two very general
questions.

First, can BGT be used to design any type of game? For instance, card game
to aircraft simulator? If not, what limitations should I be aware of? (I
intend to do more research this weekend, but I wanted a general assessment
of the tool's capabilities.)

And second, what types of games would you like to see? Before you answer,
let me tell you a bit about me and my constraints. I am highly unlikely to
build a first-person shooter, or any standard arcade style game. There are
likely others who know far more about designing such games than I do. What
I bring to the table is extensive knowledge of board and card games, as well
as role-playing games. It seems likely that for a competition I'd start
with something like a board or card game, because these are somewhat more
static, while a role-playing game would be very dynamic. Are there
particular board or card games you'd love to play, games that are not
represented at all in the blindness community at the moment? For instance,
I used to love playing Risk, and I've never seen an accessible Risk game.
Similarly, there are tons of unusual games published every year, from
Carcassonne to Ticket to Ride, Dominion to Qwarriors. If you don't know of
a specific game you'd like to see, is there a type of game that might
interest you: a dice game, kingdom building game, card game, etc.?

And with all that in mind, will BGT allow me to design games that can be
played over the Internet, so that players can play against one another, or
should I aim for a game where you play against the computer?

Many thanks for any input you can offer.

Nancy

Whether there'd be enough interest (or indeed time in Philip's
schedule) to justify such a framework is debatable, but how about
this.

People vote by rating games out of 10 on different aspects, as in a
score of 10 is this is killer, a score of 5 is it ticks the boxes
and a score of 1 is meh, not so much. A few categories that would
apply across the board to most genre of games I can think of would be
originality, replayability, sound design, stability (you'd need a
catchier title for that one), and perhaps round it off with a very
generalised overall, how awesome is this game question. That way,
the categories combine to make it fairer. A Bop IT clone might recieve
low marks from most people for originality, but there's room for an
inovative genius to step up to the mark with a Bop IT clone that turns
out to be totally addictive and they'll get the credit they deserve
for replayability. Similarly, games that are great can shine even with
bad sound design, or awesome sound design can still stand out as what
it is even if the gaming experience ends up being a bit drab. I
suggested the overall awesomeness category because, for me at least,
there have been games I've loved or gone back to time and again but I
can't always explain why.

It'd be a balancing act, but with the scores being made public, I
think there could be a fair system here.

[Audyssey] Finding Good Web-Based Games

2011-12-21 Thread Loravara
Hi,

This discussion about the top 25 best games for the blind has me intrigued.
As a blind gamer, I'm interested in the best games for the blind, regardless
of who developed them or what their motivation was.

What this means for me is that I pay for my Blind Adrenaline membership, and
I have the RS Games client on my PC. I also played Entombed avidly when it
came out, and wish there were more games like that one being developed. On
the other hand, I have numerous games on my iPhone that just happen to be
accessible, either because the developer achieved it accidentally, or
because they agreed to help when the blind community reached out to them.
Examples include 7 Little Words, Moxie, Word Warp, King of Dragon Pass,
Frotz and so forth.

Whenever someone makes a list, top 25 games of the year, for instance, they
get to define their criteria for that list. I may or may not agree with
their approach, but I always like to see the results, since I might learn
about a new game that I'd never considered.

Web-based gaming is particularly intriguing to me. I would be interested in
the opinions of those who play such games as to which ones they find most
enjoyable. I would particularly like to find kingdom building games, or
fantasy games where I get to start a character from scratch and take them on
quests and adventures, acquiring magic and items and other things as I go.
I'd prefer games where the site is mostly or completely accessible, and
where I don't have to do a lot of JAWS gymnastics to play, although if the
game is particularly good, I'd be willing to sacrifice these criteria.

I look forward to your responses.

Thanks,

Nancy

hi. I agree that proofreading should be in the guidelines, but
policing this is inpractical.
People should just remember that people will ignore them if they are
hard to understand.

On 12/18/11, Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi Meka and all,

Back when we were discussing the proofreading guidelines for the list
we were considering something very basic that most people should be
able to follow without too much explanation.

For example, let's take punctuation. Now, we know there are some more
advanced punctuation rules such as using colons, semi-colons, and
dashes that may be unfamiliar to some of our list members. We would be
willing to overlook things like that because there are plenty of
people who are sighted that aren't sure where to put a colon or where
a semi-colon should be used instead of a comma. However, everyone
blind or sighted should be able to know where and when to use basic
punctuation rules like periods, questions, and exclamation points.

We base this on the fact that anyone over 10 years old in the United
States should be able to recognize the difference between a
declarative sentence, exclamatory sentence, or question. In fact, my
son is only seven years old and he can tell you when and where to put
a period or question mark. So its not unreasonable to ask list
members---who are likely older than seven---to complete sentences with
a period or question mark at a bare minimum.

As far as spelling goes it is usually pretty obvious when someone
doesn't attempt to proofread a message for spelling errors. One or two
can be overlooked but if a message is full of several mistakes its
going to be rather obvious that the person has not made any effort to
proofread the message before sending. Most e-mail clients such as
Thunderbird, Windows Live Mail, Microsoft Outlook, etc come with spell
checkers so there really isn't an excuse not to spell check a document
to get a reasonable amount of accuracy on the final draft.

The same holds true for grammar. Its a given certain words can be very
confusing for a blind user. The English language is full of words that
sound alike but have totally different meanings such as: to, too, two,
there, their, they're, sale, sail, here, hear, stake, steak, where,
and wear. Some spell checkers will catch the grammatical mistake, but
some won't. In a case like that a moderator would overlook the mistake
as long as the message was otherwise pretty free of errors. Trust me
when I say we understand how something like that could be confusing if
a person is using speech instead of braille or visual reinforcement.

If it is something more obvious like a double negative the moderator
could write the person off list suggesting how to restate the sentence
so it is more grammatically correct. The purpose wouldn't be to put
the person down but merely to instruct them how to improve there
 language/communication skills.

For example, let's assume someone writes, I didn't find no ammo in
Shades of Doom. Some people might not realize that is a double
negative, is grammatically incorrect, and might just need a reminder
how to restructure that sentence to read, I didn't find any ammo in
 Shades of Doom.

That doesn't mean we--the moderators---would hound people, but would
merely make recommendations and suggestions that would improve their
communication skills. I for one can't see it as anything other than
being helpful and an improvement for the person. Of course, a lot
depends on if the person wants the help, wants to change, or continue
to compose poorly written messages. In a case like that if a person
continues to write messages that are difficult to read the moderators
would then go to the next step by moderating or banning them from the
list until the quality of their posts improves. However, we wouldn't
take a serious action like banning them without giving them a number
of chances to correct the problems first.

 Cheers!

proofread their emails rather than a hard and fast rule, because where do

 misused comma?

Don't get me wrong, I am a huge proponent of proofing what you write.
 it's
a good, courteous habit to start laying down, but do you really want to
create that much more work for yourselves?

I'm sure you all are aware of this, but some .pdf files are actually scanned

images placed in a .pdf format, which adobe whatever cannot read. It will
tell you that it needs OCR. Just wanted to make that clear. I've got most
of the RIFTS RPG books in .pdf format, and they are apparently scanned
images. You could print out .pdfs like this and then scan them with a
program and save as a text file, but who wants to waste the paper, ink, and

 Just a note on pdfs.

There are actually two versions of Adoboy acrobat reader, an accessibility

 one and a normal one.

They look exactly the same and have the same file names, but one is much
better with screen readers and at converting pdfs into text.

I in fact only found this out when I noticed that pdfs were working
differently on my desktop and laptop, due to me having the accessible
version on one and not another.

Unfortunately this isn't exactly clear from the Adoby site last I checked,

you can however get the accessible version here:

I downloaded the silver sword manual from the silversword-rpg.com site

Not sure which version of acrobat reader you have, but it comes up

Wonder if Mario already updated the pdf just in the last three hours? If

By the way, the Game Mechanics you posted from your OCR copy were just as

I suspect we've all had to delete messages we weren't interested in. That's

hello everyone,

I, for one, would not like to see the topics about the new BGT tool and
how to use it forced off of this list. I am not a programmer, nor will I
ever be a computer programmer. But, I am a game player and am very
interested in this tool which may allow those of us who have no interest
in becoming computer programmers the ability to create games.

I know that statement in and of itself will enrage some people on this
list, the statement about my having no interest in actual computer
programming, I mean..

I see nothing wrong with discussions about this topic being kept on the
list. I do not want to have to join a computer programming list, where
ninety-nine percent of the topics will be way over my head, nor do I
want to have to join and remember to visit some web forum to learn more
about his tool exclusively.

. If you don't want to read about it, then for Heaven Sake, just don't
open the emails and read them. Hit the Delete key on any with BGT in
the subject line. That won't eliminate all of the BGT mail, but it will
get a good many of them. I'm sure all of us on this list routinely run
across many messages which hold no interest for us, but we deal with it.

Please, list mods, don't let the complaints of a very few control this
list. It is an emailing list, after all, and a spike in traffic once in
a while is to be expected, especially accompanying the release of a
wonderful new game tool. Once the tool has been around for a while, the
email traffic will slow down yet again.

[Audyssey] Programming Language for Game Design

2010-03-24 Thread Loravara
Good Morning,

Currently, I am a mainframe programmer who uses COBOL, CICS and JCL.

I've been tempted to design a few of my own games, but I'd like to do so on
a Windows 7 machine, not the big mainframe we use at work.

Initially, I'd like to design things that you play alone, against a
computer, but one day I'd like to branch out into games that you could play
on-line, against other people.

What is the best language to learn in order to accomplish these tasks? In
addition to a programming language for creating the game, what else would I
need to know, down the road, in order to make the games multi-player?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Philip,
All I can say is awesome job. I've just finished reading the language
tutorial, and as you said the scripting language is a stripped down
version of C++. The scripting language rocks as it is so close to C++
I felt like I could jump in and start coding without the language

say the reader did a very nice job reading the manual. Great work so

Re: [Audyssey] Programming Language for Game Design

2010-03-24 Thread Loravara
I'm definitely interested in audio game development. I consider it
fortuitous that my request for info appeared the same day as I saw your info
on BGT. I've downloaded it, and started through the tutorial.

I like the approach of starting with BGT. I've never used C++, so hopefully
I can get my feet under me with BGT, and then move on to a full-fledged C++
once I'm ready.

Thanks for putting this all together. I'm eager to try it.

I'm going to start with a dice roller. There are board games out there like
Descent, and role-playing games like the new edition of Warhammer, which
have very specialized dice, and special methods for tallying them.

I can't read my own dice results with these special dice, so I will create a
dice generator. Probably far simpler than you envisioned when you designed
BGT, but a starting point.

Hello there,

Personally I use C++ and would recommend it to anyone wanting to expand as
much as possible, but a few simpler solutions might be one of the .net
languages or even my game scripting engine BGT. This will support networking

eventually, but it all depends on how far you want to go. C++ will let you
do virtually anything, while BGT is specifically geared towards audio game
development.

 Hi.

I was wondering about two eventual bgt interactions which it doesn't seam
to do at the moment, heck, it might already.

Firstly, will Bgt be able to interact with html pages? ie, write some text

to an html page, or respond to clicking of a link or button.

I ask this because one thing I've wanted to do for a very long time indeed

is write a single player, textual rpg game similar to Sryth.

Even if hosting or online play is impossible, I was wondering about a
situation where you downloaded the games' html files and played through
them directly on your harddrive. Could bgt scripts handle all the
 calculation and logic required?

Failing this, how about sapi? would it be possible to have bgt output to
sapi, and thus create something along the lines of entombed?

appologies if both of these are impossible obviously I'm just working
things out, however I've had complex and systematic notions for an
exploration rpg in mind for a long while, and I'd love to be able to make
 them into a reality!

 Beware the Grue!

 Dark.

Oh, I say leave the semicolons in. From my perspective, C++ is a new
language, and the semicolon is just a syntactical requirement.

After all, I have to put periods at the ends of my COBOL statements.
(Actually, they're no longer required, but I'm working with people who've
been programming in COBOL for 25 years, so from their perspective, the
period is required.) Seriously, though, I think that retaining the
syntactical rules is probably a good idea.

GameToolkitreleased!

Hi,
I hope not. I've been programming in C-Style languages for about 15
years and semi-colons are second nature to me. Taking them out would
totally screw me up. in fact, that is one reason I suck at languages
like Python as my habit is to terminate a statement with a semi-colon
and Python starts screaming at me it is wrong. I realise this is a
personal opinion, but I absolutely hate Python and any language that
doesn't use a strong C-Style syntax.

Smile.

Hi phil,
I know this is totally not conforming to C++ syntax, but is it possible
(or do you have plans) to make semicolons optional in the final release?
Languages like Python, for instance, don't use such things, and it's
kind of confusing, with with if statements not needing them and pretty
 much everything else needing them.

[Audyssey] More Entombed Questions

2010-03-07 Thread Loravara
OK, I was running around on levels four and five.

First, when going down to level five, I was told the stairway branches, and
to pick between the mines and Goblin Town, or something like that.

I picked the mines.

When I came back from level five, the stairway didn't branch anymore, and I
couldn't go to the Goblin Town, or whatever it was called. Is that
expected?

Second, I have two quests on levels four and five. I don't think I saw
either of them, though.

I suspect I'm not doing the searching right, as I've never seen it work.
How do you search and make it effective? Am I missing whole sections of
these levels?

Thanks.

[Audyssey] Monopoly

2010-01-25 Thread Nancy (Loravara)
I noticed a bug in the Monopoly game. When a person goes bankrupt, and is
removed from the game, it skips the next player. I played two games this
morning, and it happened to me twice in the first game, and once in the
second.

I've excerpted portions of the transcript below, so that you can see what I
mean. Elicia (a bot) goes bankrupt. It tells me that it's my turn, a few
chat messages are exchanged, but I never get my turn. It goes straight to
Ramiro.

In addition, there seems to be a quirk with the houses and hotels. All 32
houses were gone, that's true, but we still had hotels available. But it
wouldn't allow us to upgrade to hotels; it kept saying that you couldn't add
a fourth house, even though the properties already had 4 houses, and we were
trying to upgrade to hotels.

It is now Elicia's turn.
Elicia unmortgages Saint Charles Place for $77.
Elicia rolls 6, 5.
Elicia moves eleven spaces. He lands on Park Place. It is a Blue property.
It is owned by ramiro, and it has a hotel.
Elicia must pay rent of $1500.
Elicia is bankrupt! Elicia is out of the game!
It is now Loravara's turn.
Elicia is watching.
It is now ramiro's turn.

property.
It is owned by raaj, and has two houses on it.
Ramiro must pay rent of $100.

Re: [Audyssey] BG Hearts and Other Games

2010-01-20 Thread Nancy (Loravara)
Hi, Thomas,

I just installed BG Cribbage under Windows 7, and it worked fine. I played
one full game of Cribbage to see if I experienced any problems, and it
worked flawlessly. Anna makes a good reader, and the game was fun.

The only thing I did differently during the install is that I installed the
game in C:\Program Files (X86). This is the folder for 32-bit applications,
and I just assumed that all of the BG games would be. With that done, it
was fine.

Thanks for the info on the voices. I'll look into this eventually, to see
if they have any voices I want to buy.

Take care, and thanks for your help.

Hi Lora,
I don't know about anyone else but I've had some problems with the
Spoonbill games under Vista and Windows 7. I've as yet not been able to
figure out what exactly the problem is so am unable to give suggestions
as to how to solve the issues I've had.
As far as voices goes Microsoft Sam, Mary, and Mike all were dropped in
favor of Microsoft Anna when Sapi 5.3 came out for Windows Vista. So in
short a brand new Windows 7 installation only comes with Microsoft Anna
installed. That's fine by me as she is a better voice than Microsoft's
older Sapi 5 voices.
As far as getting more voices goes that depends on how much you want to
spend and the quality of the voice you want. One place that makes Sapi 5
voices is
http://www.cepstral.com
and there voices are decent and are fairly inexpensive as far as voices
goes. Generally, they are $30.00 USD per voice.
Another site that sells voices is
http://www.nextup.com
and they have several good voices for sale from ATT, Cepstral,
Realspeak, etc. The only thing you need to be aware of is some are for
Sapi 5, which you want, and some are specifically designed for their own
products like Weather Aloud, Text Aloud, News Aloud, etc.

Hi Lora,
I don't have all of the Spoonbil games up yet, but you can grab several
of them from my web site at
http://www.usagamesinteractive.com/downloads/spoonbill-games/
and that might give you a good start.

[Audyssey] Accessible PS3 Games

Re: [Audyssey] a free game with Windows 7

2010-01-18 Thread Nancy (Loravara)
Hi, Thomas,

Card games? How do I find them? Every time I look for Games in Windows 7,
I keep finding the HP games, which don't look terribly accessible.

But if we can find an accessible Windows card game or two, I'd love to give
them a try.

Thanks.

Hi Charles,
it is true. Not only does Microsoft's Chess game work fairly well with
screen readers their card games are fairly accessible as well.

Re: [Audyssey] BG Hearts and Other Games

2010-01-18 Thread Nancy (Loravara)
Thanks to you and Jacob both. I just sent Ian an Email.

Will these work under Windows 7? Do I need to do anything special to make
them work?

And ... on his Web site he talks about text to speech voices, and how Sam
isn't the best of voices. What TTS voices does Windows 7 come with? How do
I install others? How do I find out which voices I have?

I apologize; I am a very new Windows 7 user. I tried to find a Speech tab
under Control Panel, but the layout is definitely different for Control
Panel now. If anyone can walk me through how to configure Windows 7 better
for JAWS 11, I'd be delighted to learn (or point me at a link that can set
me straight).

Thanks again for your help.

Windows 7 comes with microsoft Anna - and she's not bad at all.

Unfortunately I'm not on my windows 7 machine at the moment, but seems best
to try typing different things in the search box on the start menu, and then

trying arrowing up and down.

You could either try the word speech, or something like TTS.

Oh, I'll consider it. That sounds like a great idea.

I don't mind memorizing menus. I do it all the time for other things, even

challenging each other on-line definitely has appeal.

doubt we'll be able to play it at all. what level of accessibility are you

need to at least memorize menus and such, but many are playable, especially

Re: [Audyssey] Learning to MUD

2008-10-24 Thread loravara
No problem; and I haven't paid for VIP yet. I'm trying to decide if I want
to MUD at all. When I was MUSHing, I used SimpleMU, and loved it. It
didn't require any JAWS scripting, or anything special except silencing the
status bar, which I did with a frame.

I haven't tried MUSHclient in years, though many of my friends swore by it
while we were MUSHing.

I'll see if I can poke at the Disc help before then, to get some of the
basic questions out of the way. Any recommendations on a good character
type to start with?

 Hi,

I've downloaded VIP Mud, and I'm looking to get into a good MUD. I have
 all
 day Sunday to learn.

If there's anyone out there willing to show me the ropes, pick your MUD of
choice, and drop me a line with the address and port. Thus far, I've
 found
the whole MUDDing experience a bit confusing; I've had trouble even going
 up
one level, and want to learn what options will make the game interesting.

I come from a MUSHing background, and the approach seems very different.

Let me know if anyone wants to show a newbie around on Sunday.
