Also, just as a quick additional note, I love AudioArchery. it's a
great casual game. I'm still trying to reach 350 points.

Keep rockin' it, Liam.

Re: [Audyssey] audio games for IOS

2013-06-08 Thread Dakotah Rickard
Here's how I look at it.
If I was going to write an app, I'd probably go the whole route and
make the purchase of a Mac, used or new. However, I am currently in
the process of learning C#, so the ability to port C# to IOS is
particularly attractive to me, especially as I would not have the
history or marketing power of some of our more respected and
established developers.
I would have to build up that rep with PC games, and then I could
either focus on Objective C for a while, or I could spring for the C#
port.
There is one thing to keep in mind. Learning Objective C is maybe
pretty difficult. It's not like many other languages, but Apple itself
offers a lot of free resources to people who're interested in
Objective C, and downloading courses from the ITunes University, which
are also free, can really boost your knowledge. If I wasn't actively
learning C#, I'd be learning Objective C, because right now, and for
the foreseeable future, and without opening too big of a can of worms,
IOS is the most accessible handheld device, in terms of what it can do
and how it is used.

Also, Java is riddled with security holes, and unless someone has had
professional training in development, they probably are going to miss
at least a couple. This can be a really big issue for a person owning
a phone, wherein they keep a lot of valuable data, just as it can be
an issue for anyone on a computer. Thus, while you can write apps in
Java for Android devices, Oracle is only just now really stepping up
to the plate in terms of security, so that is a consideration, whereas
all Apple apps are basically sand boxed. It'd be really hard for
someone to screw up enough in programming that a security hole was
left open enough to allow user data to be compromised in anything
other than that one app.

Trouble, at worst you might have to have a second user interface for
older versions of android, but usually if you write software for
android it can just run, because it is just a normal java program
using the android API. The problem of "fragmentation" on android is
not as bad as it is made out to be by some.

Re: [Audyssey] audio games for IOS

2013-06-07 Thread Trouble
The only problem developing on android is, all those versions. See
not all phones run the same version. So what works on one may not
work on others. So its not worth writing a version for every release
of android. And yes, the android list reports breakage with apps on
every release of android including with accessibility. So that would
be a headache no programmer wants to tackle doing more support than
programming.

Hi Ian,

Yes, you can use Mono for iOS for developing games in C#, but as you
pointed out it is like $400 for the iOS version of Mono. That's not

of view.

Cheers!

The first 2 cost around $400 each. The third is free but only builds on

It would be nice if you could use mono for IOS to stay in C# for most of
your code and then be able to call into their 3D audio library.
I expect that is possible, but haven't looked at their library yet.

Re: [Audyssey] audio games for IOS

2013-06-07 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Bryan,

No, not everyone can just run out and buy a Mac, but the truth of the
matter is with iOS that developing software using XCode and Objective
C is the best way to do it. It isn't the cheapest method in the world,
but if a developer writes enough games he or she will make their money
back quickly enough.

For instance, if they write an arcade game like Alien Outback, sold it
for $10, they'd only have to sell like 120 copies to make the money
back on the cost of the Macbook, and anything else is pure profit. So
even though the initial cost may seem steep it isn't hard to make that
investment back.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] audio games for IOS

2013-06-07 Thread Ian Reed

Hi trouble,

I suppose it depends on where your skills already lie and if you have a
lot of code already written in one language.

I was just pointing out that C# can work on those platforms as well.

Can you do cross platform in objective C? I'm sure there are solutions
for it. But by your logic you would call it a cheap copy to use
objective C on windows or on Android rather than using the "real thing".

As far as expense a mac mini will cost you no less than $600 last time I
checked and there is a $100 annual fee to develop for IOS.

And I believe you still need to compile on a mac with mono for IOS so
I'm not saying it's cheaper as far as straight money costs but
developers must also consider what languages they already have skills
and codebases in because switching languages and rewriting codebases is
expensive and time consuming.

Hi Trouble,

True. I think if I were actually going to write games for iOS I'd
invest in a Macbook and write the games in XCode using Object C rather
than this round the bend approach of writing them in C# and buying
Mono etc just to port games from Windows to iOS which really isn't the
best way of doing it.

Hi Ian,

Yes, you can use Mono for iOS for developing games in C#, but as you
pointed out it is like $400 for the iOS version of Mono. That's not
exactlypocket change for an audio game developer. No matter what you
do iOS is an extremely expensive investment from a development point
of view.

Cheers!

It's also worth mentioning a product by the name of RubyMotion, of which I've
heard quite a bit lately. It seems a way to code iOS apps in the Ruby
programming language, which is another to learn but isn't Objective C either.
Best,

I have heard that there is a basic interpreter for the mac that lets you
write in basic then encodes to objective c, but I'm quite doubtful that it's
all that effective since they are so different. Even if it was 95% accurate,
you'd still need to know objective C. Even if it was 99% accurate, you'd
still need to know that language.

Hi Lenron,

While I understand your point unfortunately its not that simple to do.
Every operating system has its own way of handling things and when you
get into writing apps for phones and tablets its even that much more
confusing and complicated to do. Especially, if the developer wants to
write the game for more than one platform.

Re: [Audyssey] audio games for IOS

2013-06-06 Thread Charles Rivard
I would not make those games, as they have been produced by someone else and
the original developer has the right to produce their own games for
different platforms. I would not infringe. It's not legal.

2013-06-06 Thread Ron Kolesar
Is this another telephone engine for games, or is this a windows engine for
games or another body or physical interfacing with the hand to ear games.

Just curious.
I'm on my way out now, but am curious and will have time later to listen to
the podcasts.

Thanks.
