Hi Darren, My guess probably a lack of continued interest or a lack of time. As for myself I don't attend, because I am usually doing something else. For example, there is a chat scheduled for today at 3:00 PM EST. Which is right now according to the clock. However, I plan on spending my free time today working on MOTA beta 17, reading e-mail, and probably will catch up with some friends later today on Facebook. With that schedule I'm not going to attend a gamers chat unless there is enough people to make it worth my time being there. Re: [Audyssey] (Moderator) Gamers Chat Notifications
Hi Folks, At their start game chats were popular with about 10 to 20 people showing up. but then interest dropped off. It's hard to get people to decide on a good time with people in the US wanting evenings and people in Europe and the UK wanting afternoons which are their evenings. Now days with Skype and Team Talk and instant messaging and Twitter, there is less need for that type of chat. I vote for dropping the automatic announcements. [Audyssey] A question to you all audyssey folks.
Hi all, I just need to post this quickly. First of all, this is the biggest question of all. Sorry if I can't spell check, I don't really have any time. So, to the point, how do you do a radio quality like Captain Chase communicates with Orion in the missions telling him the objectives? I tryed all I can, lowering the freaquency, but still didn't work. Any help would be appreciated. Question 2. Any good collections that someone could send me off list? Note. They have to be 50 mb or 100 mb. No higher than that. Any help on these questions would be appreciated. Re: [Audyssey] A question to you all audyssey folks.
Hi Muhammed, In order to create a radio sound effect you need a sound editor like Goldwave or Soundforge. You would start by removing some of the base from the speech recording in order to give it that radio tinny quality. Then, you can mix in some radio static to give it that fuzzy connection sound. That's one way of creating radio voice overs. Another way is you can set a walky-talky in front of the computer microphone. The person doing the voice over can go to another room and speak the lines into the walky-talky. This method is quite authentic and is great for a Star Trek communicator, a Star Wars comlink, or any other generic radio/communicator effect. Creating a generic radio sound like this is pretty easy. As far as sound effect libraries goes there is this little thing called copyrights. Basically, before anyone can or should provide you with sounds it would largely depend on the copyright license for the sounds, and what exactly you plan to do with the sounds. If they are going to be used in a free production in most cases the sounds are free or sold for much less than a commercial license. If they are going to be used in a commercial product then you will have to pay out royalty fees that can range in the hundreds of dollars, pounds, euros, etc. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Problem with Daytona
Hi, Agreed. The mouse touch pad on most laptops will work, but using a physical USB optical mouse will work much better with games like this. For example, we have just added mouse support to Mysteries of the Ancients beta 17. Although we do support mouse touch pads they really aren't that good for games in general. They don't have enough buttons, they are too sensative for good mouse control, and I personally couldn't get the game to respond the same way as I could with a basic USB optical mouse hooked up to my laptop. So in the documentation we specifically recommend a USB optical mouse with three or more buttons on it for gaming. Cheers! On 1/8/11, Jeremy Kaldobsky jer...@kaldobsky.com wrote: Yes Nicol, a lap top track pad will work fine. [Audyssey] Mouse Support in Games
Hi everyone, This is a friendly notice to let everyone know what we are up to, and to get a little feedback from those customers planning to purchase our games. At the time being we at USA Games are involved in adding multiple input devices to the Genesis 3D engine for Windows which will include keyboard, mouse, and joystick support for all of our up and coming Windows titles. For that reason we have just spent the past week adding and debugging mouse support which will be available in Mysteries of the Ancients beta 17 once we finalize that branch of the code. Which brings us to some questions about your mouse setup and thoughts. 1. As a gamer how important is mouse support to you? 2. If supported would you consider purchasing a mouse with five or more buttons for game input? 3. What type of mouse device/devices do you currently own? (Such answers may include: none, touch pad, USB optical mouse, wireless optical mouse, PS2 standard mouse, trackball, etc.) 4. How many buttons does your mouse device have? Is it a two button, three button, five button, or eight button mouse? 5. Does your mouse device have a scroll wheel? 6. What do you think of the following input commands for a side-scroller like Mysteries of the Ancients? Menu Next: wheel forward Menu Prier: wheel backward Menu Select: left button Climb Down: wheel backward Climb Up: wheel forward Jump Left: left button+mouse left Jump Right: left button+mouse right Jump Up: left button+mouse forward Perform Action: middle button Run Left: right button+mouse left Run Right: right button+mouse right Walk Left: mouse left Walk Right: mouse right Sincerely, Thomas Ward Chief Operating Officer http://www.usagamesinteractive.com --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Cheers! Hi Thomas, these are really intresting questions and I think mouse support in games is a good feature in general. I myself have a laptop, which of corse has a trackpad. But I also have an usb mouse which I'd rather use for gaming and already do, actually. My mouse has two buttons and a wheel, which also can be pressed like a button. No idea if this counts as a third button or not. If it does however, your suggestions for navigating the game sound good to me. I don't know if I would buy a new mouse for games, since there not many games yet which support a mouse. But if there were more games with mouse support, I maybe would buy one with five buttons or so. hello, here are my answers. 1. Hi Sarah, Yes, most three button mice are like that. If you turn the scroll wheel it acts as a z axis. If you Press the wheel down it sends a mouse button clicked event to the application. Most of the time clicking the wheel is the middle button or button 3. Cheers! Hi Dark, Dark wrote: not much for standard gameplay, but if it were offering an alternate gameplay style or effect such as faster, more analogue targiting, then possible. I however don't see the need to use a mouse in for instance bog standard walking left/right movements. my response: Well, this is always completely a personal choice, but most people who grew up using a mouse, as I did, find the mouse more natural, smoother, and even quicker to use than a keyboard. The mouse also gives you more suddle control over movement, but of course if you aren't very good with handling a mouse in general it will over compensate for your drastic movements etc. There is an art to using a mouse, and it really shows in games like Rail Racer where you can really do more precise leans/turns when hitting the curves. Dark wrote: Maybe, however only if the 5 button mouse meant somethign important to the game as in the above answer. my response: Well, you can think of a five button or eight button mouse as another type of joystick. It simply gives you more buttons for firing, speaking status, etc. Basically, all the things a keyboard could do except in an alternative input device. Advantages/disadvantages would all depend on the type of game. In Mysteries of the Ancients there is really nothing special the mouse can do other than be a smaller more responsive input device. In something like Mysteries of the Sith it could have more specific/special use as a hand-held game controller for a light saber etc. Smile. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Mouse Support in Games
1. As a gamer how important is mouse support to you? Answer: If it provides better response than a keyboard, I'd give it a try. As I currently don't use a mouse for gaming, I honestly don't know how important it would be, due to a lack of experience. 2. If supported would you consider purchasing a mouse with five or more buttons for game input? answer: As they are inexpensive, I would consider it. Hopefully, mouse support will become a feature of more blind friendly games, making the small investment more worthwhile. 3. What type of mouse device/devices do you currently own? (Such answers may include: none, touch pad, USB optical mouse, wireless optical mouse, PS2 standard mouse, trackball, etc.) answer: The laptop has a window that you rub your finger around in to control the mouse pointer, whatever that is called. At the time being we at USA Games are involved in adding multiple input devices to the Genesis 3D engine for Windows which will include keyboard, mouse, and joystick support for all of our up and coming Windows titles. Hi Thomas, The first version of the RS Games client used ESpeak directly, but it now uses speech-dispatcher. I'm not sure if your voices support speech-dispatcher though. That's actually one reason I can't get in to the RS client for Linux. It uses ESpeak, only ESpeak, for speech output, and I think it sounds like crap. Re: [Audyssey] Mouse Support in Games
Hi Tom. This is my point. i'm afraid I don't see the need to have a mouse in a agme like mota unless it's specifically controlling a weapon with that sort of output, where as rail racer you get distinct advantage from the more analogue control of the vehicle. this is what I mean. I really don't see what using a mouse would add to a bog standard game with actions like walk left, walk right shoot etc, to me in fact, it would be adding an extra layer of complexity, sinse I am most used to using the keyboard. However, an analogue control, such as a light saber, or using the mouse in a 3d game to targit a weapon precisely while you moved your char with the arrow keys, thus meaning fluid moving and shooting, that to me would! be a bennifit of using a mouse and deffinately add something to a game. Btw, my absolute preferd in put device is a good, hefty fighting game style joystick in the style of late 80's and early 90's arcade games like streetfighter 2 or mortal combat. i stil have a fantastic capcom arcade stick for my snes and mega drive, which work amazingly well to say they're nearly 20 years old. For my gamecube (and gba player), i have an X arcade stick, which is literally what would happen if you got the top of an arcade cabinet and sliced it off. Playing original final fight on my big stick with my 36 inch monitor is awsome! The x arcade stick also has a usb in put, I really7 ought to try it in my pc at some stage. As a random fact, i hate joypads, sinse I always want to use more fingers for the majority of the buttons than just my thumb (I never really got that design point), that's why when a big stick isn't available, i prefer keyboard, sinse I can use many fingers together smoothly even whe multiple keys are needed for different actions. Re: [Audyssey] Mouse Support in Games
Hi Hayden, I don't think it has anything to do with need. It probably doesn't need mouse support. However, my feeling is since I am adding mouse support to the engine in the first place, for games that could really use mouse support, why not go ahead and include mouse support anyway? Part of the issue here, I think is, that the VI community is so alienated from the pointing devices in general they have an opinion that including mouse support has to be something really special or spectacular. However, as a mainstream gamer I can tell you most mainstream games include mice support for very common/generic things you can use the keyboard for just as well. However, take that mouse support away and Edos, EA Games, Activision, ID Software, etc you name it will have hundreds of angry mainstream gamers banging their doors down asking for mouse support. Most mainstream gamers would rather use the mouse even if it does nothing more generic than walk forward/backward and turn left/right. That is just how they were trained to interact with the computer. For the VI most start out using the keyboard exclusively so no need for the mouse unless it offers them something they can't ordinarily do with the keyboard. It is this misconception of the mouse and joysticks I'd personally like to break. For one thing the mouse is usually faster than keyboard input. For example if you want to turn around quickly moving the mouse slightly to the left/right will flip the character around in that direction. Performing a left click while doing a slight pull to the right will cause Angela to do a quick hop to the right, and the same for the left. It just seams to me more natural and a bit smoother as you don't have to hold and press any keys down. Just move the mouse a little left or right to walk, jump, run, swim, whatever. Re: [Audyssey] Mouse Support in Games
Hi Dark, Well, as I just explained in my prier e-mail the mouse has its advantages even with generic actions like walking/running. Instead of having to press and hold down two keys like shift+right arrow I can just hold down the right mouse button and drag the mouse to the right to run while leaving my left hand free for checking status, firing a weapon, whatever. Too me it feels both more natural since all I really have to do is slightly move my hand to the left or to the right to get Angela to do something. However, if I have my choice I'd take a joystick or game pad over the mouse for this type of game. Which is on my schedule for this up and coming week. I understand what you are saying about game pads, but I rather enjoy game pads myself. In fact, I happen to like the XBox 360 controllers and probably will use them in playing games like Mysteries of the Ancients since I'd like to support them directly. That to me gets a PC as close to a game console as humanly possible without actually porting the games to the XBox etc. Anyway, my thinking about supporting the mouse is more for completeness in this case. Since the engine has mouse support I might as well include the additional support to Mysteries of the Ancients which will not only provide end users with another choice for input, but any feedback the community can give will only help us improve, debug, and fix mouse support so that we can depend on it in games where mouse support might be more specialized and necessary. Re: [Audyssey] Mouse Support in Games
Although I don't see the need for a MOTA mouse, I don't see the necessity of JAWS, using Eloquence, having the ability to read faster than I can hope to ever understand. I don't know of anyone who uses their screen reader set to read at the highest level. But it is there for those who wish to use it. I'm thinking the same with a MOTA mouse. If you want to use a mouse, but the option isn't there, bummer. If the option is there, you don't have to take advantage of it. If it will give faster response, let's give it a try. --- Laughter is the best medicine, so look around, find a dose and take it to heart. - Original Message - From: Hayden Presley hdpres...@hotmail.com To: 'Gamers Discussion list' gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, January 08, 2011 6:03 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Mouse Support in Games Hi Dark, I agree here; MOTA really has no need for a mouse as far Ias I can see. Hi Thomas, Any chance we might see MOTA BETA 17 sometime soon? It's really that simple. -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: Saturday, January 08, 2011 6:55 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Mouse Support in Games Hi Dark, Well, as I just explained in my prier e-mail the mouse has its advantages even with generic actions like walking/running. As a random fact, i hate joypads, sinse I always want to use more fingers for the majority of the buttons than just my thumb (I never really got that design point), that's why when a big stick isn't available, i prefer keyboard, sinse I can use many fingers together smoothly even whe multiple keys are needed for different actions. get rid of them. I aggree with some I did try to get on at one time or another. but either I ran out a time, or I had connection issues or something, they are not nz time zone friendly, and I tried to listen to a few but I honestly never really got access to it. Its been at least 6 years since I have bothered with voice chat sites, especially with teamtalk, skype, and klango not to mention msn, etc. saying that if someone wants to make a teamtalk for audyssey use thats probably fine though who knows. I think we are generating enough traffic without chats. I have even forgotten my user id and pasword. So yeah they are spam now, no one even talks about the chats in fact even when they were on hardly ever. And now the mag is all letters from the list, hmmm. On that subject, unless the mag can come out in a regular manner with someone doing it I vote we should scrap the mag to, its sad but unless there is like a regular issue at sertain times and that schedual is kept well. On that note if the mag is just gona be content from the list I vote we should make it go away, news is fine but there are few to no articles these days with the adam imortal gamer, and game rescue unit series gone, and with only the dnd chat stuff in it assuming that dnd with phill v is still active, well I think thats also gone to unless ofcause we can have a regular release at least. well I don't care for this, if we start them again we need a few changes. Firstly using something like teamtalk would really mean we could run off private servers etc. 2. someone needs to archive these and release as a podcast for those that can't join, that includes myself. 3. someone needs to post summeries or transcripts in text or both if at all possible to the list or if thats to hard any new topics etc discussed for those that don't want to wade. In short we need to overhaul the entire system. At 09:01 a.m. 9/01/2011, you wrote: Simple. If we keep them then we should start the chats back again. Re: [Audyssey] A question to you all audyssey folks.
you can buy royalty disks for dirt cheap mind you. I have a couple disks of imporio, and a couple other disks I was given. also, therecordest.com I think has a free but small library. I also got some authentic sfx libs for about 100 bucks 4cds worth. I also picked some from eurica corp these were 5 bucks. Ok, failing these. if you can find, borrow or whatever a copy of hotdog express you will find a load of wav and midi files on one disk, i realise these are probably copywrited stuff but thats a lib right there. agm had a soundpack but not sure how good that is etc. there are various lagit and modded miriani packs floating where I don't know, they do use a lot of copywrited sounds but there are authentic sfx to. If you get stuck, you can make your sfx. I once had to make a voice over lib for guards, that was supposed to be for rsgames but it looks like others in the community decided to use my sfx with out my permition. Guess I could do something about it but then again its just me swearing and yelling into a mic. and where they are used they actually sound good and are used sort of what they are used for. They never had a licence and when i finally get a website I may just put those up for free, I mean these are my sounds and all. At 11:03 a.m. 9/01/2011, you wrote: Hi Muhammed, In order to create a radio sound effect you need a sound editor like Goldwave or Soundforge. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Mouse Support in Games
Hi Thomas, find the answers to your questions below. Regards, Damien. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, January 08, 2011 10:46 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Mouse Support in Games Hi everyone, This is a friendly notice to let everyone know what we are up to, and to get a little feedback from those customers planning to purchase our games. I have never really used the mouse in game play. I am generally used to using the keyboard, but I wouldn't mind giving the mouse a try. 2. If supported would you consider purchasing a mouse with five or more buttons for game input? I am in two minds. Currently, not many games support the mouse as an input device, so for the most part my mouse would be sitting in a corner doing nothing. However, it can be effective as a joystick or game pad, so I'd have to think about that when the time actually came. 3. What type of mouse device/devices do you currently own? (Such answers may include: none, touch pad, USB optical mouse, wireless optical mouse, PS2 standard mouse, trackball, etc.) Touch pad. 4. How many buttons does your mouse device have? Is it a two button, three button, five button, or eight button mouse? Two button. 5. Does your mouse device have a scroll wheel? No. 6. What do you think of the following input commands for a side-scroller like Mysteries of the Ancients? Menu Next: wheel forward Menu Prier: wheel backward Menu Select: left button Climb Down: wheel backward Climb Up: wheel forward Jump Left: left button+mouse left Jump Right: left button+mouse right Jump Up: left button+mouse forward Perform Action: middle button Run Left: right button+mouse left Run Right: right button+mouse right Walk Left: mouse left Walk Right: mouse right They are very good commands. Again though, not all devices have middle buttons and wheels. It is similar to a problem I had when I downloaded Lighttech Interactive's Bop it Ultimate game when it was first released where the twist it was the right control key. Since my laptop didn't have a right control key I was unable to play it until they released the laptop/desktop layout patch. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Mouse Support in Games
1. Not always that important, but, yes, like some others said, sometimes it would be nice for certain types of actions (and not really relevant, but along the lines of that one, I have a sort of gamepad/joystick that works way better for me in racing games than keystrokes). 2. Not necessarily since wouldn't mean to/make use of it too often. 3. USB optical mouse 4. two standard buttons, plus scroll wheel 5. yes 6. I might appreciate scrolling actions being supported by something like a scroll wheel, and things like aiming with the mouse, or maybe using it for certain types of almost interactive activities, like performing tasks like opening doors/weapon use, symbols/pattern replication, but would prefer to stick to keyboard for more standard things like walking, etc. For example, in old sighted days, when playing FPS games, while I would have used mouse for turning/aiming, I would still use the keyboard for actually walking, climbing, etc. Jacob Kruger Blind Biker Skype: BlindZA '...fate had broken his body, but not his spirit...' - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Sunday, January 09, 2011 12:46 AM Subject: [Audyssey] Mouse Support in Games Hi everyone, This is a friendly notice to let everyone know what we are up to, and to get a little feedback from those customers planning to purchase our games. That's not low priced...this side of the world...smile The optical USB mouse I have here, which is a genius, which in old days was a good brand for mice in general, would, back in 2007 have been sold for around ZAR55 - around $8 or thereabouts. Re: [Audyssey] High Performance Optical Gaming Mouse
Hi Phil, Wow! Sounds like a winner. I don't think I've ever owned any gaming mice quite that nice. About the only feature it lacks is force feedback which is rarely found on a mouse anyway. I'd say for serious gamers that would be the mouse to have.
