[Goanet] Dhobitalao - Bombay India
flaky and light meat patties that melted on your tongue. The pani-kum chai was a great chaser to these snacks. A little beyond Bastanis was the standing place of the 'Dhobitalao Bandsters'. These were not band members but individual musicians who waited to be hired for any wedding or other occasion. They were not a cohesive unit and may never have played with the others, but once they were selected, without practice, they performed as if they were an accomplished orchestra. That is a great thing about Goans. They make awesome musicians. Partly in the genes and partly due to their village choir-master training, playing is across the spectrum. In all the great Bombay swing bands of the sixties and seventies, like Micky Correia, Johnny Baptist, Maurice Concessio, Goody Seervai, Nelly, Ken Mac and Hal Green, the majority of the musicians were Goans. Nowhere could this be seen better than in Dhobitalao. A walk down the street of any neighborhood, especially after sunset, would produce harmonious wafting sounds of lilting Portuguese marches and sambas, tangos, classical mandos, and even Louisana blues and Hollywood music scores. It was truly a music fest per gratis. At the heart of Dhobitalao was the Sonapur (or officially, Dolours) Church. Women with sleeveless dresses were sent away from the Communion railing without the host and the ones without veils or scarves on their heads were publicly berated. Khomeini must have learnt his state-craft from the Sonapur priests. But these same priests did not bother the men folk. These they considered to be without redemption. As soon as the priest stepped to the pulpit to start the preaching, the men made off to C. D'Souza's next door for coffee and cigarettes. What they didn't hear, they didn't care about. The vicar even attempted to put a loudspeaker inside C D'Souza's so as to disturb all conversation there during sermon time, but that only resulted in coffee-talk rising many decibels higher. Eventually their volumes outdid the loudspeaker, permeated the church and disturbed the semonizing priest himself. The vicar conceded defeat and removed the loudspeaker. Religious feast processions winding through the streets of Dhobitalao were very unruly. There would be a massive crowd of people setting out from the church but as each Aunty's speakeasy was passed along the way, the numbers of men would get less and less until at the door of the church on returning, the only males in the procession were either below fifteen or those banned from their favorite Aunty's bars due to non-payment or the very frail who wanted nothing but peace with their God whom they were due to meet soon. The boys and girls of Dhobitalao were indoctrinated in the value of education by their parents, whether they went to the nearby Jesuit school of St Xavier's or to Little Flower, St Sebastian, St Thresa's or Dolours. They might have had no place to study except under the dim lights of the passageways or during late nights with their parents' snores for company, but they learned their lessons well. Here in Toronto, there are many of those once-Dhobitalao-youngsters. They are 'solid buggers' now and their children go for the best higher education there is in Canada. When my children were young kids growing up in Canada, we told them to eat their vegetables and not leave them. My wife used to tell them, Think of the starving children in India and finish the dinner. And now they tell their children, Finish your homework. Think of the children in India who would make you starve if you don't! Author unknown Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami
[Goanet] Leonard's Interview in Navhind Times today
Dear All, It was an excellant interview by Frederick Noronha of Leonard Fernandes. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami
[Goanet] What is Christanity
I agree with Ana Maria Fernandes about Christanity. Christinaity doesn't mean we have to go to church every Sunday. Christanity is how we behave with out fellow human beings, be good and kind to the less fortunate. Visit the sick and old. Once at a mass a priest mentioned Israel as a Catholic State. When I confronted him and said it was a 'Jewish State' he was upset with me. Another priest says 'don 't be like Hindus and follow a caste system'. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami
[Goanet] Oh my God
I agree with everyone who has seen OMG Oh my God. It was an excellant film. By the way we went for the 5 .15 pm show at Inox and it wasn't full, half-full. Paid Rs. 180/- each. Hillarious film. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami
[Goanet] Congratulations on 18th anniversary
My heartiest congratulations to Goanet on their 18th anniversary, especially all those who are working so hard, like Frederick, Bosco, etc. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami
[Goanet] Shi
I agree fully with Ana Maria Fernandes about a retreat house estimated to cost 20 crores. It is sheer waste of money. In Betim we have a small chapel very close to our local post office. The chapel is never full. Suddenly certain local people decided to raise funds for a bigger chapel and they raised 14 lakhs. When I moved to Betim in June 1998, in front of my place was a dilapated cross. Went from pillar to post to get funds to restore it. Nobody came forward, till I joined The Goa Heritage Action Group and spear headed to raise funds. From Betim, besides my immediate neighbour and a couple of people, no one else gave a sou. This heritage cross was built in 1580 or thereabouts. Finally we raised funds and the cross was restored. No one will give funds for education of poor children, but will give funds to their local chapel/church, as they think they will definitely reach heaven. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami
[Goanet] Anglo-Indian Sunday Lunch
To continue what Frederick posted about the above. I bought a Bengali recipe book somewhere in the early eighties called Bangla Rana - The Art of Bengali Cooking by Minakshie Dasgupta. There was a chapter on Anglo Indian Recipes. There were certain dishes introduced into the Bengali cusisine by the Anglo Indian community of Calcutta, eg. Hilsa Fish Fry, Fish Moulee, Mutton Cutlet Curry, Poached Egg in Tomato Curry. Ana Maria de souza-Goswami
[Goanet] Reservations of Seats in Buses
I agree with Nelson Lopes that conductors don't enforce the above. Many a time when I've used the bus, I demand that a man gets up from a seat 'Ladies Only', and they do. Once I took a bus from Mapusa to Moira. It was going to Aldona. Their were old ladies standing. I told a man to get up, one of them did, told the other also. He refused. The bus conductor said, in not so many words, you are paying a Rs. 10/- ticket, this lady will file a complaint and I'll have to pay Rs. 800/-. He got up. Gave the seats to those two old ladies. I told them you have a right, exercise it. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami
[Goanet] Pasteis de Nata
I've had Pasteis de Nata in various places in Portugal and surprising when I was living many years ago in Brasil. In various cities in India, in restaurants, typical British cuisine is still served, eg. Shepperd's Pie, Caramel Custard, Roast Cicken with baked potatoes. We should not forget, that tourists who come to Goa want to flavour the Portuguese influence in Goa, rather than the Kadamba or Vijayanagar, etc. dynasties which ruled Goa.
[Goanet] Portuguese Citizenship
Just a correction I want to make. An Indian holding a foreign passport with an OCD card, he/she can get employment, start a business, but cannot stand for elections, or vote. Its correct he/she cannot buy agricultural land, but can buy a flat/house. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami

[Goanet] Cabbie charges by meter
This is regarding cabbie charging exhorbitant rates for taxi fare. I beg to differ. I live in Betim on the river, very close to the ferry wharf. I don't possess a vehicle as I have never learnt to drive. I have an auto guy and a taxi guy on call who I have used for the last 11 years. My taxi guy is very honest. From the airport to my residence its rs. 600/-. From my res to anywhere in Dona Paula whether he waits for 1 hour or 4 hours he charges Rs. 500/-From my res. to aldona and back also Rs. 500/-. and so on. To Calangute and back its Rs. 400/-. My auto guy also is very very honest. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami
[Goanet] Mum's Kitchen
Hi, This is regarding the post on Mum's Kitchen. I have been going there for years. Know Suzette and Ronnie Martins well. The food is excellant, high quality and within 20 minutes one is served. Yes, I agree the prices have gone up, so has the quality of service. Its always full. The last time I was there was 4 months ago with a British-Gujarati friend. We ordered two soft drinks and two main dishes. With the tip we paid Rs. 600/- each. We also got creme caramel as complimentary. The service was excellant. [Goanet] Goa Arts and Lit. fest
This is in response to Jason K. Fernandes article which came out in the Gomantak Times today and reproduced in the Goanet. If one is organising a festival of this nature, one plans it months in advance. One does not necessarily want to attend all the sessions. Besides there are constraints on the part of the audience where transport is concerned. I live in Betim. Have to cross the ferry. wait for a bus which will take me to Dona Paula. It also clashed with the seminar at the Goa University. I agree, some of the sessions were full of people, especially in Mandovi and Zuari Hall. Arjun, who is the Programme Coordinator was very sympathetic and so was Mr. Mirchandani. There are many events in Goa which start on time, there are others which don't, but that doesn't give the right of one of the organisers being rude. [Goanet] SlowJoe and Ginger Accident Concert
ALLIANCE FRANCAISE , PANJIM is pleased to invite you to a LIVE CONCERT NOT TO BE MISSED by Slow Joe and the Ginger Accident Kala Academy Open Air, Friday December 16, 2011 at 6.30 p.m. Entry free on first come first served basis. Collect your passes at the gate. An encounter of an old street singer known by the Times of India as Cinderella Man and a soul-blues quartet of young French musicians. Joe ROCHA, 68, comes from the Island of Chorão in Goa, India. He lives and sleeps with the sun, taking life as it comes. People call him Slow Joe. Everyday, Slow Joe sings improvised or written songs of his own. In July 2007, fate allows him to cross paths with Cédric de la Chapelle, a young French musician. Cédric is instantly charmed by the genuine blues of Slow Joe’s voice and has him do some a cappella recordings. Back in France, he forms the soul-blues quartet The Ginger Accident with his friends, in order to write the music stemming from Slow Joe's voice. In 2009 Slow Joe the Ginger Accident meet appear live on stage, at the Transmusicales Festival in Rennes, where they are unanimously dubbed the revelation of the prized French festival by media like Le Monde, Times of India, Libération, ARTE, France 24,... Slow Joe, charmed his French audience in March 2010 during two sold-out gigs (Epicerie Moderne/Lyon and Café de la Danse/Paris). This was just the beginning for Slow Joe, Cinderella Man, and now promising young recording artist. Her mobile no. is 9890078704. Atmavishwas – A Trust for the Mentally Challenged was created in the year 2000 in Mumbai. It is a registered Trust with the Charitable Commissioner of Mumbai and the Social Welfare Department, Goa. Atmavishwas, which means Self Confidence aims to inculcate this in every student that passes through its doors. Atmavishwas aims at providing Vocational Skill Training and Life Skills so as to make our young people with Intellectual Disabilities as independent as possible. Atmavishwas, The Vocational Center, Mumbai, teaches skills like Paper Work and Embroidery along with Functional Academics. Music plays a vital role in the daily functioning of this center. The center takes pride in its Percussion Band that has performed at many venues around the city. It has performed at the famed college festival, Malhar of St.Xaviers College, Mumbai, as well as the Celebrate Bandra Festival, where their performance was part of the closing ceremony. Through music, the trainees at this center show their ability and not their disability. Atmavishwas moved to Goa in the year 2005. It has been a slow growth, but a great need and potential is seen in Goa. The Goa center is looked after by Ms. Liane da Gama, a trained Special Educator, who has also studied in the US. There are 8 students who are beneficiaries of the various programs offered. The center at Verna, offers Training in different skill areas, like Jewellery making, Paper Works, Candle Making, Cooking, Baking and Gardening. Training in Activities of Daily Living and Functional Academics is provided as and when required. There is no fixed curriculum, but Individualized Education Programs are created based on the needs of the students. A wholesome education is provided, whereby the Body, Soul and Spirit of the child is nourished and nurtured. The ability rather than the disability is brought to the forefront. It is not a single sided approach. Often the body might be weak but the spirit strong, or the body strong and the spirit weak. We, at Atmavishwas, attempt to balance all these weaknesses or shortcomings by introducing rhythms and routines. The day starts with a prayer and a song. A time table is created for each quarter, thereby offering a dynamic routine. Music is incorporated into the schedule to the best of our ability. We try to make the place beautiful, and this contributes to a wholesome and peaceful education. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami

[Goanet] Christian/Hindu names
What is all this controversy regarding Christian and Hindu names. If you refering Christian names to Saint names, I can understand, but then aren't we secular. My friend's daughter is married to a Polish Catholic. She has an Indian name 'Maya' her second name is the Polish version of Agnes and her Polish surname. In Goa it was a tradition to give names of the patron saint of your family. Today hardly anyone has these names, its either russian names, german names, etc. One name for a boy which is so common in India is Rahul, it has something to do with Lord Buddha who was Prince Sidharath. One has Catholic, Sikhs, Hindus, Jains, etc. with the name of Rahul. What about Indians copying the west where dress is concerned. The other day I went for a dinner 'do,' wearing an 'oriya' sari. Everyone else was in western attire. How many Goans wear a Sherwani or a Bangala, is it because they consider themselves Portuguese. Do the westerners copy our attire. Now, in Portugual, Hindi films is the 'done' thing. Please let us be secular, don't forget, Judaism, Christanity and Islam are all comparative religions. This is what I face when I take the Betim ferry and vice-versa. I was happy when TOI, Goa Edition published my letter in their section 'From Pillar to Post'. On Monday the 3rd, there was no ferry at Betim. Reached the bus stop at 9 am, thousands of office goers trying to hop into the bus. I managed to get a lift to Panjim, did my work, when I reached the Panjim ferry at noon, again no ferry, had to take two buses back to Betim.Ferry resumed in the afternoon. My maid tells me that no two-wheelers were allowed. My prayers have been answered and the candles I lit at the Betim cross in front of my place. Cannot understand why, when there are two bridges, these two wheelers have to use the ferry? Duration of the film is one hour The dangers of GM (genetically modified) crop are more grave than one would imagine !!! There are some PROS which the companies try to put forward , but the fact that GM food is untested with unknown side effects, and the fact that we risk losing the crop heritage is frightening ! THE FUTURE OF FOOD offers an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled grocery store shelves for the past decade. From the prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada to the fields of Oaxaca, Mexico, this film gives a voice to farmers whose lives and livelihoods have been negatively impacted by this new technology. The health implications, government policies and push towards globalization are all part of the reason why many people are alarmed by the introduction of genetically altered crops into our food supply. THE FUTURE OF FOOD examines the complex web of market and political forces that are changing what we eat as huge multinational corporations seek to control the world's food system. The film also explores alternatives to large-scale industrial agriculture, placing organic and sustainable agriculture as real solutions to the farm crisis today. [Goanet] Foreigners buying property in Goa
I know a lot of foreigners who have bought old and heritage homes in Goa and have restored them. Some of them are very close friends of mine and they live most of the year in Goa. One acquaintence bought a beautiful home in Saligao but unfortunately after living for many years, sold it and had to go back to England. Roland, on another issue I don't have an estate with garderns, maids etc. that was when my father was in the army and we lived mainly in army cantonments, that was the style in the fifties and sixties. The ex-pats who live in Delhi, especially in Vasant Vihar, Maharani Bagh, etc. they live in style with chauffeurs, butlers, maids, gardners. One of them said to me, hate to go back to my own country when my husband is transferred back as I'll have to do all the work myself. Carmita, I'm only involved in heritage in goa. Am member of the Goa Heritage Action Group. The mining lobby in Goa is very strong. Please get in touch when you come to Goa. my no. is 2417847. Also work for a travel portal based in Delhi. See you soon in goa. Saudades Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami -- next part -- No virus found in this outgoing message. [Goanet] Various issues in Goa
I agree fully with Carmita. By the way, are you the same Carmita I met years and years ago in Delhi, also in goa. Yes, goa has more pressing problems, that we are bothered about foreigners buying property in Goa. One of the biggest problems is our garbage, insfrastructre, better roads, electricity, water etc. Mind you all this has increased tremendously. If we have all these problems DO NOT BLAME ON MIGRANT WORKERS, blame on our Goans, who are selling their houses, land and moving into apartments. Why for a few bucks more. I had written a letter in Goa TOI complaining about the two wheelers on the ferry boat and that there was only one ferry boat. Voila, may be it helped,I don't know, there are two ferry boats now at Betim. And from September, passengers, cyclists and two-wheelers will have to pay. Another menance we have, nobody stops at the zebra crossing, so we are resorted to jay walking. If we don't do that we can never cross a street in Panjim. The other day I was at Pilar, in the far end a whole chunk of a hill was cut. In front of my flat, when I stand on the balcony can see 4 casinos, two are near Malim. Very close to my place a jetty is coming up for one of the casinos. Do you think there wll be parking space. The owner who sold the land to the casino owner is a Goan. Someone was mentioning about learning Hindi in schools rather than Konknai. When English is the medium of construction, Hindi is the second language, it has always been. From the 1st to 4th standard, Konkani is the medium at govt. aided schools, not the private ones. From the 5std it reverts to English medium. Konkani is then taught as a subject. My niece who is in her second year of Microbiology at St. Xaviers Mapuca, passed out from Fatima Convent.Margao. She studied there from the 5th Std. Hindi was the second language, then Konkani. Also a third language either French or Portuguese, she opted for Portuguese. When I was growing up in North India, we just had Hindi as the second language. Besides our National language is Hindi. In my opinion every Indian should know their national language and the regional language they come from. My maid a Muslim from North Karnataka, speaks Hindi, Kanada and Konkani. Please fellow Goans who live abroad, do not criticize goa too much. If you feel Goa needs to change, please come down and I'm sure help will be given to you in all fields. [Goanet] Foreigners buying property in Goa
How can Roland Francis say people who are coming to goa from India are 'trash'. Haven't Goans from time imemorial gone to other parts of the world to work, Kenya, Aden, the Gulf. Are they considered 'trash' in those countries. Are the goans living abroad not 'trash', according to people oof those countries. Aren't goans, indians or are they a different species. Is Goa a continent, a country or is it a State of India. Goa has the second highest per capita income, second to Punjab. Any foreigner buying a property in goa has to prove that he is staying for more than 180 days in our financial year which is April-March. The reason why foreigners are coming to live in India its because they can live a better life then in their own countries. their money goes a long way. Foreigners are paying their domestic staff Rs. 5,000/- a day, can a normal Indian pay that in goa. they may be able to pay that kind of salary in the metros, because you earn that kind of a salary. Haven't people from east europe migrated to western europe. Are they considered 'trash' in those countries. Roland, where ever you're living are'nt you an 'immigrant'.As for education we Indians, especially in the fieldof Economics are in 'par;' with anyone of the western world. Also in advertising. David Oglivy of Oglivy and Benson, in his book referred to the then head of OBM, Mani Aiyer as 'my Indian partner' and praised him. The 'trash' as Roland Francis called us Indians, they are the ones who are in construction, collect your garbage, etc. If they weren't there, who would do these jobs. Are Goans prepared to do these jobs, No. Let me say, after the Delhiwallas, the most obnoxious and rude people on the streets are the Goans, and its not me a Goan who is commenting, its others Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami -- next part -- No virus found in this outgoing message. [Goanet] British families buying property in Goa
I have been following the above postings on the Goanet. Let me elaborate what I know in point form. 1. Any foreigner who wants to buy property in Goa, cannot do so, u nless he buys in the company name. 2. A couple friends of mine, both with British passports. She of Indian origin with an OCI card, he a white British with a PIO card have bought a place in Goa in her name. All very legal. 3. A lot of foreigners have bought places but not signed a 'sale deed' , but a 'lease' which means they are not the owners of the property, mainly flats. These flats were sold by Catholic builders. 4. Those Goans/Indians having foreign passports have now to produce an OCI card if they want to sell their ancestral property in Goa. This has come into effect sometime last year. 5. There are a lot of unscruplous lawyers/builders who are taking people for a ride. 6. Sometimes the titles are not clear especially in Form 1 to IV, and yet sellers are selling properties to people. The buyers also are gulliable and are not verifying the papers. Most of my foreign friends have bought houses/flats legitimally. [Goanet] Migrant Labourers and Outsiders
Thank you Marshall Mendonca for your balanced view regarding migrants in Goa. The problem with lots of Goans living outside Goa, is that they want Goa to be frozen like in 1961. Rajan Parrikar did a wonderful power-point presentation on Rape of Goa. Who is responsible we Goans. All the rich Goans who are living in the West, do they put money back into Goa. Except for the recent Goan-American Heart Foundation where a lot of Goan Doctors in the West have invested in this foundation. In Gujarat, lots of rich Gujaraties who have made it 'big' whether in other parts of India or in the West have invested in Gujarat in Education. The average Gujarati has a lot of respect for the teachers. Be it school, college, post graduate, etc. I remember when my husband was suffering from cancer, we were in Ahmedabad. He was a professor at MICA (Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad). No doctors charged him. Why, because he was in Education. Savia Viegas, the writer is doing a lot of good in her village at Carmona by way of education for underpriveleged children. she has come back to live in Goa. Goans who live in theWest shouldn;t criticise goa. You out of choice, left Goa. You thought Goa was not good enough for you, others feel otherwise. As Marshall said Goa is not a country but another State of India. Aren't Goans living in Delhi. Met some of them who call themselves 'Portuguese' just because of their surname. Do they know anything about Goa, NO. Do not criticize Goa, at least its a better place than living in australia, or the UK. The Goans live such boring lives over there. I've lived in Brazil, its far better than australia or the UK. Never been to the US or Canada, nor do I have any intention of going to these two countreis. Life in India is more exciting and challenging than any other western country. -- next part -- No virus found in this outgoing message. [Goanet] Migrant Labourers and Outsiders
Thanks Vivian for taking up for me. I cannot just understand why Goans are against migrant labourers. My maid is a Muslim from Karnataka. Honest to the core. Very clean, unlike some Goan maids who don't have a bath before coming to work. this is the usual complain of friends of mine who employed goan maids. Aren't we Goans to be blamed for migrant labourers. Are the so called Catholic builders employ all migrant labourers. Why don't they employ goan labourers. I asked the Bengalie carpenter why did he leave Calcutta for Goa, and he said he gets double the salary over here. Why do our electricians, etc. go to the gulf, to get tripple the salary. Aren't they migrant labourers in the gulf. Why do Goans migrate to england, australia, etc. Maybe they are not educated enough to get a job in India or the competition does not favour them. With lesser education its easier to get a job abroad then India. In Portugual my cousins lament that most of the people working in the winery are from Ukraine. At least 'outsiders' are polite, unlike goans who are not. Get into a bus, 'ladies only'. If there is a goan sitting he will not get up for a lady. If he is an 'outsider' he will get up. I'v e had first hand experience. School children will never get up for an elderly person. This does not happen in Calcutta. a man cannot sit in 'ladies only' section, be in a bus or metro. We are all Indians, and secular. There is no difference between Catholics, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, Budhists, etc. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami -- next part -- No virus found in this outgoing message. [Goanet] Migrant workers and outsiders
I didn't want to raise a debate on the above. Yes, I agree that the governmet should screen 'migrant' workers. But, if these workers do not come to work, where do we find, plumbers, carpenters, masons, etc. I live on the banks of the Mandovi River, maintenance of my place is high, because of humidity, corrosion, etc. The contractor who did work in our small building (4 flats) is a Goan, but the workers were Oriyas. Very polite. I needed some small carpentery work done at my place, went to 'Lobo Carpentery shop' (old man died and he leased the place), the young carpenters were Bengalies. Did some excellant work, very very polite. I regularly buy my cashewnuts from a shop on 18th June Road, the owners, Rajasthanies, my fruitwala is from Karnatka, and my vegetable man is from Rajasthan. All these people are very kind and polite. Can I say that of Goans. a goan woman came to me, saying she had nojob, so I needed an extra pair of hands to do certain chores as my regular maid has no time. She worked off and on for a week. She wanted a full timejob. Sent her to two places, promised them she would join and never turned up. My newspaper guy has a shop which his father used to run, v ery efficient and polite Goan, his brother couldn't get a 'government job' so opened a similar 'gaddo' type of place in Betim. Blame our builders for employing the migrant labourers. If it weren't for 'outsiders' who buy our heritage/ancestral homes and maintain them beautifully, they would go to seed. Rich goans in the US, England, Australia, etc. do they want to come back to Goa, NO. In Saligao, aldona, Arpora, Assagao, lots of 'outsiders' have bought old houses, restored them and are happily living in them. Dont Goans go to the Gulf, England, etc. of v arious classes, buy houses and live there, so why are we against migrant people. [Goanet] Fund Raiser Film Show of Delh-6 for Hamara Scool
There will be 2 shows of Delhi-6 on the 20th of February at the Inox, 18.30 and 20.00 hrs., donation passes are Rs 300.- and Rs.500.- The proceeds go to Hamara School, an NGO operating a day center and hostel for poor and neglected children. Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Om Puri, Amitabh Bachchan Directed by: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Synopsis Delhi 6 is a black comedy that exposes people's hypocrisy. In today's world, we are often quick to judge people, but if we look at ourselves very closely, we often find that we're not being fair to others. Delhi 6 revolves around Roshan, a young American boy of Indian origin. He comes to India for the first time, to drop off his ailing grandmother. She wants to die in her own country, and so prepares for the inevitable. Having led a western lifestyle, an America-born Roshan is unaware of the sights and sounds, the food and culture, the religion and beliefs that make up Indian society. After arriving in India, he engages with his grandmother's neighbourhood. He soon mixes and becomes part of the community. But little does Roshan know that this jovial and gregarious group of people have another side to them - they have decided to take advantage of Roshan's naive nature. The story is shown against the backdrop of the ancient city of Delhi (which is totally different from New Delhi). The city is almost a character in itself, representing the chaos of India, the people, their religions and their beliefs. The pin code of this old city is 110006. With pride and love they call it Delhi 6. The film puts across a message that we are quick to judge others, without seeing our own weaknesses. Delhi 6 is directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and could very well prove one of the biggest movies of 2009.

[Goanet] Ferry Crossing
Joe, I just saw your video of the ferry crossing on yutube. It is so true. One aspect you forgot to show, is when we cross from Panjim to Betim, on the Betim side there is hardly any place to move as the area is jammed with two wheelers. If you cross between 9-10 am or between 6-7 pm, its so crowded that one has to push oneself on the ferry less you are left behind. The two-wheelers don't get a damn about the passengers, there are times when cars also want to use the ferry. I am sure one day a horrific accident is bound to happen. [Goanet] Morris Minor
Reading Francis Rodrigues posting about the Morris Minor, reminds me of ours. My father bought it in Ajmer way back in 1951. He was then posted in a small cantonment called Nasirabad which was the regimental centre of the Grenadiers. It travelled all over with us. From Nasirabad to Delhi to Simla to Poona, to Ambala to Jammu, back to Nasirabad to Bangalore and finally in 1969 when my father retired to Moira. Both my parents drove the car. My father taught my brother Tony to drive using the Morris. After he died in 1989 we sold the car. I think all of us wept to see our beloved Morris leave our house in Moira. [Goanet] Goan friends earn A-levels
Mr. Bernado Colaco, I do object as an Indian being called a ghanti. What is so great in living in UK. With a ghanti passport I have travelled half the world, sometimes travelling by first class, worked in Brazil, got royal treatment when travelling in South America, more than my fellow Brazilians. It shows the level you come from by calling Indians ghantis. What are you a foreigner? By the way, do you know what goans are called 'Paca Paos'. When I was growing up in North India, my friends associated goans, with their domestic staff. Thats what the non-Goans thought of Goans during the sixties. When I was living in Brazil, I think I was the only Goan (very few at that time) with an Indian passport. The rest had Portuguese passport. They would leave India with their Indian passport go to some European country and get a Portuguese passport. It is not difficult for me to get a Portuguese passport because I was born in Goa during the Portuguese regime, so were my parents and grandparents. I thoroughly object you using the word 'ghantis' to us Indians. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami
[Goanet] Goan Houses and Not Portuguese Houses
Hi, I am surprised that people refer to Goan houses as Portuguese ones. We do not, I repeat do not have Portuguese houses but Goan. If anyone of you saw the last episode (repeat one) on Contacto Goa (RTP) featured on architecture in Goa. Even the anchor Fransisco Machado said 'There are no Portuguese houses like these in Goa in Portugual, these are Goan houses'. Some Goans while trying to sell their house, say 'Portuguese house'. On my visits to Portugual I have never seen houses in Goa in Portugal. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami
[Goanet] Selling ancestral property
Hi, Lots has been written about goans selling ancestral property. How will goans be 'pverty-stricken' by selling property. What they do with the money is nobody's business. Parents can sell the property because it belongs to them and not the children, and besides if most of the children are living overseas and do not want to come back to Goa, why can't they sell the property especially those who need the money. If it hadn't been for rich Indians and foreigners who have bought our ancestral homes, they would have gone to seed. We had to sell our home in Moira because no one wanted to live there after my father expired in 1989. My mother couldn't live there alone so shifted to her maternal place in Margao, and my two brothers and myself had already acquired our own houses. Also we had to sell our maternal grandparents place in Margao this year (late 17th century) as all the inheritors, except for three of us live in Portugual/Brazil. We did not sell it to an outsider but to a fellow Goan. Goans do not want to come back to live in Goa, but still criticize on the Goanet about outsiders coming in hoards to Goa. Blame it on others, blame it to the builders, who need migrant labourers to build the flats which goans have acquired and non-Goans. Don't goans go to the West and buy houses/flats in the UK, USA, Canada, etc. Do the people of that country criticize Indians buying property in their own country?. Please lets end this subject of selling ancestral land and tackle other issues, as garbage, rash driving, etc. Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami

There are various mansions to be seen in Goa. The Figueiredo house is in Loutulim. Part of the house has been converted into a Heritage Inn. There is also the Costa house and a house belonging to the Barreto Miranda which has been sold. In Margao there is the 'Silva' House. Chinchinim has also a beautiful house belonging to Max Loyola Furtado. If you meander through villages in Goa, particularly Aldona one can see beautiful homes eg, Amelia and Damasceno Soares house, Alarico and Veronica Mascarenhas house as well as La Martine Rocha. Another exquisite house is the Mascarenhas Palace in Anjuna which is leased to Lady Hamyln. In Santa Cruz there is the Nachinolkar house as well as Kenkre. Hi Edward, In the Name of God (Khude ke Liye) was the Pakistan film in the Competition section at the Film Festival. It is directed by Sohaib Mansoor. It is the story of Mansoor who goes to the United States for higher education. During his study years the tragic events of 9/11 take place and somehow he is arrested... A very well made film, though it was 170 minutes one didn't feel it that long. I have no pride in telling anyone that I was delegate. After burial, one has to remove the bones and then put it in the family niche. After Vatican Council II, Catholics are allowed to cremate. I know both young and old, who were cremated. For RR; modern/clean amenities; serene, healthy and wholesome location Visit http://www.garcabranca.com for details/booking/confirmation. Hi Goanetters, I agree with Miguel fully that we Goans should be able to converse in Konkani. If you are born and brought up in Goa then its easy to speak the language or if you have lived here for many years and have local domestic staff. Goans in Bombay speak Konkani because of the Goan staff. I also agree,Tamilians, Malayalees, Bengalies all speak the language among themselves. Especially the Bengalie, they will never speak in any other language to a fellow Bengalie other than Bengali. I'm a witness to that. A Hindu Goan will speak in Konkani to another Hindu Goan. But, I don;t think a Catholic Goan of a certain economic strata, will speak in Konkani, if they know Portuguese they will sepak it or if they don't its English. Unfortunately, no one spoke to me in Konkani and my first school was in Delhi, so its was English/Hindi, which I'm fluent in both and finished schooling in a boarding school in Ajmer. Knowing Hindi it was easy for me to follow Gujarati and Bengali. Having lived in Gujarat for four years, and you hear only Gujarati around you, its easy to follow the language. In Betim, everyone speaks either English or Hindi, from my local grocer, to the vegetable vendor (from Rajasthan) to the post office personal to my newspaper chap. I think its too late for me to learn the language at this age. I find a lot of young goans who hardly speak the language!!! Ana Maria de Souza-Goswami
