Thanks, Jim. That answers my question rather completely.

(I know what I need to do to fix this. I'm just curious about what
good reason IBM might or might not have for doing this.)

(1) Pageable common storage (pageable CSA and DREF SQA) can exist
in the same segment as fixed common storage (fixed CSA and
non-DREF SQA). Pageable common storage processing in RSM is
serialized by the Common RSMAD lock. Fixed common storage
processing in RSM is serialized by the RSMGL lock. If
these two types of processing could allocate and deallocate
page tables, they would be doing so unserialized against
each other.

(2) It has certainly been this way at least since the beginning of
MVS/XA. I didn't work on RSM much back in MVS/370, so I
would hesitate to speculate on how it worked. However, the
locking was simpler in MVS/370 - all of common storage processing
in both VSM and RSM was serialized by the SALLOC lock. The
The VSMPAG, VSMFIX, RSMAD, RSM, and RSMGL locks were introduced
in MVS/XA (and the SALLOC lock became unused) in order to
reduce SALLOC lock contention.

Why? I know of one that IBM implemented after rejecting it.

This is not terribly unusual. Many requirements are rejected on
the basis that we'll probably never get to them, even if they're
good ideas. This is often because the cost of changing the code
appears to put the item out of reach for the foreseeable future
when compared to other things that are higher in priority. But
sometimes opportunities to open up the code arise for some
unrelated reason and we wind up being able to accommodate the
request after it's been rejected. (I know I did this in a
ServerPac design or two.)

Re: Define and start JES2

2006-01-03 Thread Lizette Koehler
You will probably get different answers on this question. Here is my
answer.

My memory says that the MAIN JES2 Subsystem needs to be JES2. If you define
addition JES2 subsystems (secondary) then they can be JESA, JESB, etc...

The main reason is that every piece of documentation is for JES2. You might
get someone confused at operations or Level2 if you say my JESA system is
down. Trust me, you do not want to confuse Level2 at 0200 am with a JES is
down call.

Leaving it JES2 will make everything happy. Besides I am not sure if other
vendors might need to see JES2 to make their products happy.

I have run JES2 as the main JES2 subsystem name forever and there have not
been any fallout. When I set up a JESA system, there were many factors to
consider, such as third party products, documentation, NJE/RJE partners,
etc... So I only had a JESA up on my test system; never in a production
box.

Now for the proc, personally I would keep it the same name (again for
clarification). Unless you are running a very large environment, there is
no need to make it any different. In the shop I was at we had 36 images
running. So in our staging library we had a different JES2 proc for each
image, but during our roll out procedure, it was renamed to JES2 on the
target system. That way we could maintain all of our environments in one
staging Proclib.

Hope this helps.

No matter what you name it, keep the PROC and SUBNAME names in
sync. An STC whose name matches a subsystem name is started
under the MASTER instead of under the primary JES, which is what
you want for JESx. (Otherwise, you would need to explicitly specify
SUB=MSTR on the start command.)

And, I'd expect JESx to fail if it doesn't find an SSCVT with its
name.

I strongly agree with all the others. Keep the SUBNAME and the PROC name the
same. It simply makes it easier.

However, on my sandbox, I did do the following:

copy JES2 to JESX in SYS1.PROCLIB
$PJES2,ABEND to terminate JES2
S JESX,JOBNAME=JES2

This did start up the JES2 subsystem. So, in your case, you __COULD__ use JESA,
but you must remember to put the parameter JOBNAME=JES2 on it.

The only use I see for this is if you are going to change the JES2 proc. You
could copy the current JES2 proc to JESx. Update the JES2 proc and restart JES2
(or reIPL). If JES2 failed, you could try the alternate S JESX,JOBNAME=JES2 to
go back to the old JES2 proc.

Re: Not Responding HTTP Server

2006-01-03 Thread Jim Marshall
Question posed by me late last week with latest status below.

We are running z/OS V1R6 with Host-on-Demand V7 running within the HTTP
Server. We have noticed that the HTTP Server will just stop dispatching
tasks. After a while it will return to normal and go for many hours before
doing it again (already recycled it a few times). Needless to say the HOD
users think the system is down, blow themselves off their session and try
to get back on with CICS not knowing they left. T'is ugly.

The resolution to this is not final but things are again working. The HTTP
Server has a setting for maxthreads which set at the default of 40. Seems
each time things stop it has gotten to 39. IBM's recommendation is to bump
this to 200 for the HTTP Manager setting and 40 for the HTTP Server (we
choose 100). Along with this HOD was set to timeout after 10 minutes of
inactivity of some sort; based upon Red Book guidance of some years ago.
IBM said to drop it down to 30 secs. It seems if a user closes the browser
without terminating HOD, then it hangs onto the thread. Indeed the HTTP
Server is only used to download HOD and also if HOD HELP is needed. We made
the adjustments on the fly and everything is working fine.

SMS ACS routines are not the best thing to control who's allowed to do
anything. That's RACF domain. Fortunately RACF SMS can play together:
SMS assigns MGMTCLAS and STORCLAS and these resources are controlled by
RACF.
This is the time solution for scratch mount only, however access to
existing tape datasets can be protected by DATASET class and/or TAPEVOL
class. This works for both SMS-managed library tapes and stand-alone (or
Storagetek resident) tapes.
SMS ACS routines are only for system-managed (read IBM) tape libraries.
It can be circumvented by defining STK library as MTL (Manual Tape
Library), but AFAIK it is not popular among STK users.

Take that with the appropriate sized grain of salt, but more and more
things are going to start showing up on Linux. Ubiquity and cost are
good reasons to favor Linux as the server of choice for -managing- IT
resources. CCL is just the tip of the iceberg.

As Jim Porell says; z/OS is deaf and blind, but it's the best platform
for secure data-intensive applications. Why should we bust our asses
reinventing z/OS capabilities on Linux (or any other platform) and at
the same time, why reinvent Linux on z/OS? Both have a role to play.
They already work well together and together they are significantly
greater than the sum of their parts.

astronomical time to within 0.9 second.

I don't believe the 0.9 second constraint can be maintained while inserting
 more than one
leap second at a time. Proof is left as an exercise for the reader.

Yers. A bit mind-buggering. If we are not close enough to 0.9 seconds in
December and we are
subsequently close enough to 1.9 seconds in June - we need to abandon the
plamet. Female
children and the odd male first.

Linux is the next big opportunity.

 HUH?

Word here in Sheffield is that IBM will significantly de-emphasise zLinux
this year.

As always, it's worth what you paid for it. And my liability is limited to the

To FTP to/from the internet we must use a PC with no access from our LAN,

makes it a 2-step process. This is all in the name of security.

This, of course, inspires people to try to break the security system just

New Tape units

2006-01-03 Thread Hal Merritt
Our year end 'sweet deal' from IBM was a tape 'robot'. The IBM 3494
system. We don't do near enough tape processing to justify the VTS. Two
robots, actually, one for our production site and one for the BR site.

This system is to replace our two antique 3490 ACL units and two aged
3590 ACL units. Wanna buy some tape drives, cheap? ;-)

We are using DFSrmm as our tape control software. All tapes are
strictly for backup. No input tape allowed. And we don't plan to change
that. The next phase is to leverage the two robots to do each others
offsite backups.

We are being told that the library system is 100% SMS controlled. We
have had robots in the past, but had never heard this as a requirement.
It this your experience?

We intend to rework all of what little tape processing we have to
exploit the new units. Does anyone have some thoughts for a migration
plan?

Did you have to invent some processing, such as off site tape ejects?

Any other things we should be aware of?

Thanks, the very best of the new year to all.

XML TOOLKIT Installation question.

2006-01-03 Thread Brad Taylor
I am attempting to install the XML toolkit for z/os 1.8. I get to a
certain point in the installation instructions and confusion arises.
Any help would be appreciated. I will summarize below, where I am and
where I am confused.

Thanx in advance
Brad Taylor

1. I have downloaded and read the instructions.
2. I have created a download directory for the install package in a
separate HFS and mounted it.
   MKDIR '/u/cbt1' MODE(7,5,5)
   MKDIR '/u/cbt1/xml18' MODE(7,5,5)
   MOUNT FILESYSTEM('USER.XML18.HFS') +
 MOUNTPOINT('/u/cbt1/xml18') +
 TYPE(HFS) MODE(RDWR)
3. I have created my own CSI for all SMP/E jobs.
4. I have updloaded the file from my workstation to the download
directory created above.
5. I have unpaxed the uploaded file
   oshell cd /u/cbt1/xml18/
   pax -rvf /u/cbt1/xml18/xml180.pax.Z
6. I have GIMUNZIPed unpaxed data createing the smp/e relfiles
7. I created the GLOBAL, TARGET, and DLIB zones in the smp/e csi.
8. I allocated the smp/e datasets SIXMEXP, AIXMEXP, AIXMHFS, SMPLOG,
SMPPTS
9. I did the SMP/E RECEIVE for the FMIDs HXML160, HXML170, HXML180.

The next thing I am supposed to do is run a JOB IXMISMKD from the F1
relfile. The program directory indicates that this could be installed in
its own HFS, which is what I want to do. However there is no indication
of sizing information or how to do that. I am thinking that I should
create an HFS and mount it at /usr/lpp/ixm, since this is where the
directory structure is created by the IXMMKDIR exec supplied as part of
the installation. Since /usr/lpp/ixm already exists, in a read-only
file system, I am thinking that I also need to temporarily mount that
read/write and delete the ixm directory, prior to mounting the newly
created file system. So my questions are:
  1. where do I get sizing information, or is that AIXMHFS file
allocated earlier somehow related (does not look like an HFS).
  2. is createing and mounting the HFS at /usr/lpp/ixm, the correct
thing to do?

The following from the program directory.

   6.1.7 Allocate HFS Paths
The IXMISMKD job invokes IXMMKDIR exec to create the ixm directory under
-PathPrefix-/usr/lpp
where -PathPrefix- is the high level directory name. Insure the
directory path -PathPrefix-/usr/lpp
exists prior to running this job.

Edit and submit sample job IXMISMKD to allocate the HFS paths for the
Toolkit. IXMISMKD must be run
from the Toolkit V1.8.0 relfiles. Consult the instructions in the sample
job for more information.

If you plan to create a new HFS for this product, you should consider
updating the BPXPRMxx PARMLIB
member to mount the new HFS at IPL time. This may be helpful if an IPL
occurs before the installation is
complete.

Expected Return Codes and Messages: The job is considered successful if
return code zero is received.

Re: XML TOOLKIT Installation question.

2006-01-03 Thread Skip Robinson
Think very, very large. Our XML HFS is about half the size of the z/OS
logical root. (z/OS 1.8? You are certainly in reach-ahead mode.)

Data Set Name . . . : OSR17.OMVS.XML

General Data Current Allocation
 Management class . . : **None** Allocated tracks . : 20,585
 Storage class . . . : **None** Allocated extents . : 2
  Volume serial . . . : R17CAT Maximum dir. blocks : NOLIMIT
  Device type . . . . : 3390
 Data class . . . . . : **None**
  Organization . . . : POCurrent Utilization
  Record format . . . : U Used pages . . . . : 222,720
  Record length . . . : 0 % Utilized . . . . : 90
  Block size . . . . : 0 Number of members . : 21,006
  1st extent tracks . : 18713
  Secondary tracks . : 1872
Data set name type : HFS

  Creation date . . . : 2005/06/29 Referenced date . . : 2006/01/01
  Expiration date . . : ***None***

As for mounting, we use this in BPXPARM for the SMP/E install-only HFS:

MOUNT FILESYSTEM('OSR17.OMVS.XML') TYPE(HFS) MODE(RDWR)
  MOUNTPOINT('/OSR17/usr/lpp/ixm/IBM/')

You don't have much flexibility in the mount point because of the
assumptions made by various components about the location of other
components. Same goes for the run-time HFS.

Yes it does have the same problem. Either PTF causes the same issue. I
did ask that question.

So IBM needs to add the AI to the superceding PTFs. Did they volunteer
to do so?

z/Linux to p/Linux

2006-01-03 Thread John R. Grout
If IBM de-emphasizes z/Linux, it would almost certainly
be in favor of p/Architecture (and p/Linux) rather than
in favor of z/OS (or z/VM).

As pure speculation... I would not be surprised to
see mixed p/Arch-z/Arch sysplexes sharing high-powered
hierarchal file systems (or raw files) using the coupling
facility (NB... a raw file is a physical or logical file
system partition with low-level access... somewhere
between Media Manager and I/O driver level).

Re: Define and start JES2

2006-01-03 Thread Dave Cartwright
Short answer is that the primary subsystem (for JES2) must be named JES2
and the procedure must have the same name.

Baloney. Here is the start of the IEFSSNxx member from my Test system
called MVS4 so JES2 runs as JES4;

SUBSYS SUBNAME(SMS) /* SMS SHOULD BE THE FIRST ENTRY*/
  INITRTN(IGDSSIIN)
  INITPARM('ID=00,PROMPT=DISPLAY')
SUBSYS SUBNAME(JES4) /* JES4 IS THE PRIMARY SUBSYSTEM NAME */
  PRIMARY(YES) START(YES)

The only complication is one of the CA products (11) specifies the
subsystem name in its start command, so check the CAUTOCMD member of
PPOPTION. Also remember that the command to shut it down is $PJES2, not
$PJES4.
Good luck
