Re: [JAWS-Users] Back up v Mirror Image?

2013-03-31 Thread Don Marang
Carbonite is software that backs up your documents and data to their
servers. It does it in the background all of the time. The biggest
advantage is that it happens without you thinking about it. It is off
site. So if your computer hard disk dies or your house burns down, your
documents and photos are still safe. Their new mirror feature allows
you to connect an external USB drive to your computer and it will backup
your data and documents to that drive as well as to their servers. This
provides a local copy as well, which all experts will recommend. This
also provides faster recovery. Carbonite will not backup applications
or settings. All of these can be reinstalled in case of disaster. For
faster recovery and convenience, disk image backups can be used. I use
Image for Windows in addition to Carbonite to do this. It makes a bit
by bit copy of everything on the disk; applications, settings, photos,
data, and documents.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Back up v Mirror Image?

2013-03-31 Thread Don Marang
Experts all agree that you should always have at least 3 copies of every
important file! The original, a local copy and one stored off site.
Additionally, they recommend two different backup media be used in case
of failure of the process or media. The previous situations and methods
satisfy these recommendations. Media can be upload to a server,
external USB drive, DVD. Off site can be as simple as mailing your
grandmother DVD backups or take a external drive to work.

One feature I really like about Image for Windows is that it has a file
block mechanism so that after a minute or two after starting the backup,
the file state of all files has been recorded and you can safely
continue working without worrying about screwing up the backup.

Image for Windows is from TerabyteUnlimited.com. I think it also costs
around $49. There are audio tutorials on it's use on the jaws-users.com
audio page. I write my backup of my internal drive to an external USB
drive. To restore, I have an USB Flash drive that can boot to Vinux and
has Image for Linux, which comes with Image for Windows. This allows me
to restore from my external USB drive with speech.

So, what is the purpose of backing up that information?
Or, why have 2 forms of back up?
How manageable is the Windows image program?
I tried it once as a trial but had much difficulty understanding it.

where time is to be allocated against given tasks, is rendered, it appears,
using JavaScript and is completely inaccessible. When moving around in the
grid, JAWS merely says blank, blank.

If someone else has had more success with EPM, could you please get in

 accessibility problems?

I did find an option to export my timesheet to EXCEL and this worked
absolutely fine. I was then able to fill out my time on the spreadsheet,
however, surprise surprise, no functionality has been provided to import the
EXCEL details back into EPM. It appears that to click a mouse into given

go, however, means that I have to write out my timesheet details and send
them to a sighted person, who is then to manually input them on my behalf.
This is not a good experience at all and shows that many software vendors
hardly comprehend what accessibility is, far less knowing how to implement
 it in their applications.

I have played around with Flexible Web functions within JAWS 14, hoping to

SharePoint is simply a way of storing documents etc, and it's not inherently
inaccesssible. However, how accessible it is depends on what kinds of
information you're trying to access and what views are employed by whoever
created the site and the documents themselves. I'm currently working through
a situation where JAWS absolutely does not present major pieces of pages I
need to access on a regular basis.
I've spoken to Freedom Scientific about SharePoint, and they understand it
has accessibility problems but claim they can't address them.
So, bottom line is maybe it'll work for you, maybe it won't.
Sometimes, you can export spreadsheets etc. and work on them using something
like Excel, then import them back into SharePoint.
Good luck, you'll likely need a lot of it.

Keep in mind, that the webpage developer can have many different things
happen when the mouse is hovered above an element. The nouse over
announcement just tells you it is programmed to do something. If you
press Insert + Control + KeyPad Enter and the page changes, JAWS will
tell you at what line it was inserted. It may just change colors or
perform some animation. Like others have said, if you make JAWS stop
announcing mouse over elements, there may be some materiel, like another
navigation menu row that would appear.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Windows 8 And JAWS

2012-11-25 Thread Don Marang
I thought the Edsel was an awesome design. It fit in perfectly well in
the original Muppet Movie! Actually, I recall Edsel being a separate
company that was bought up by Ford.

Yes, many experts are saying Steven Sinofsky is just a scapegoat.
However, most experts who are more familiar with the attitudes and inner
workings of Microsoft have a different view! Balmer has always not
gotten along with Steven Sinofsky, and there were many, many complaints
about his combative, strict, gruff management style. He set up
competitive positions between Microsoft divisions, such as X-Box,
Windows, and phone. Steven Sinofsky does not promote cooperation within
the company. Balmer still believes in the one interface everywhere
and wants lots of synergy and cooperation between divisions. He is
still pushing this hard between Windows 8, Windows RT (on Surface),
X-Box, and Windows 8 phone.

Personally, I have no problem with Microsoft trying out a new
interface. Other than interesting Metro wide contracts now available,
like DLNA (play to network device) and sharing features, I see little
advantage in the new tiled mobile style interface. The current apps are
dumbed down, not mature, and most are difficult or impossible to use
with a screen reader. As a former Chief Technology Officer in a
Corporate IT department, I can not see large companies wanting to rush
into Windows 8. My concern is whether Microsoft continues to dumb down
computing and eliminate the desktop or something just as powerful!

Re: [JAWS-Users] 2 questions

2012-11-12 Thread Don Marang
Shane,

My first thought is to create a simple script that just passes those
keys through JAWS. This can get ugly since Freedom Scientific has
scripts for iTunes and some people use additional scripts like
BlindTunes from http://BlindTunes.net

Just adding a simple, one line script can become a hassle when you
update JAWS or BlindTunes scripts. You may even need to repeat these
steps in those cases.

1. Open iTunes. Pressing Insert + q (CapsLock if using laptop keyboard
layout) to have JAWS tell you what scripts are currently loaded.

2. Press Insert + 0 in the numbers row to Open the Script Manager.

3. Press Control + End to go to the bottom of the page. Paste in the
following lines.

Script PassThroughShuttle ()
TypeCurrentScriptKey ()
EndScript

4. Move to the first line of the script just pasted and press Control +
d.

5. Press Tab once and then Space to check the box Can be attached to a
key. Fill out the Synopsis (short one line description), a longer
description, and finally when you get to the Attach to box, hit your
Alt+Control+LeftArrow key combination. Now hit Enter to save and close
the dialog.

6. Hit Control + s to save and compile the new set of scripts, then Alt
+ F4 to close Script Manager.

7. Go to your User Settings folder for JAWS, Start menu All Programs
JAWS 14.0 Explore JAWS Explore User Settings.

8. Locate the itunes.jkm file and open it with Notepad. It should have
something similar to the first two lines below. Duplicate the second
line and replace Left with Right in the third line. This makes the
new script you wrote to allow both key combinations to pass through
JAWS. You can add other lines to make other keys to pass through as well.
[Common Keys]
Alt+Control+LeftArrow=PassThroughShuttle
Alt+Control+RightArrow=PassThroughShuttle

9. Hitt Control + s to save, then Alt + F4 to close Notepad.

In Itunes, to fast forward and rewind through a file that is playing you hit

problem is it conflicts with the jaws keystroke for moving through cells in

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws friendly FTP client with special features

2012-11-08 Thread Don Marang
By secure ftp servers, are you just talking about username and password
or something more like gpg keys? The Windows Explorer map wizard has a
place to provide a username during the set-up. The first time the drive
letter is accessed it asks for the password. This dialog also has a
checkbox for Windows to remember the password.

Although convenient and free, this method is very slow performing
transfers. I have also noticed if I upload files to my web server, it
may take hours for it to be viewed by Internet Explorer!

I primarily use the free filezilla ftp client. The uploads are faster
and and can be viewed almost instantly.

Yes, in Windows 7, you can map a file server to a network drive letter.
Select Map... from the Tools menu of Windows Explorer. Then Tab to the
Connect to a Web Server and store documents and pictures link, and
follow the prompts in the wizard. This can be very convenient, since
it can always be available if you check the Reconnect at login.
However the performance is very slow.

Filezilla works well as long as you place the remote and local folders panes
to the proper locations and use the applications key. For instance, select a
folder or files in the local folder pane and press the applications key.
 Then select upload.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading File Size on the Status Bar

2012-11-05 Thread Don Marang
Thank you. That is good to know!

Unfortunately, when I use the JAWS cursor in the Windows Explorer
window, I just get garbage at the bottom of the window! Would changing
the screen resolution make a difference? It is currently set at the
hardware's recommended resolution of 1366 x 768. Interestingly, the
Insert + PageDown still properly reads the bottom line.

SayBottomLineOfWindow script. The script that comes from FS only reads the
actual bottom line of the window. But if I read both lines with the JAWS

Does anybody know of a Windows 7 or JAWS setting that will place the total

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS And T.V. Tuners

2012-11-01 Thread Don Marang
Did you mention whether you already had USB TV tuner hardware or you
were looking for one that had accessible software? I am interested in
this topic, but have never tried any hardware. I keep coming across the
name auppauge (auppauge.com). Perhaps, because it is fairly generic and
works with most 3rd party, free software, like xbmc, tversity, and other
PVR software for Windows and Ubuntu. A good source for comparing
hardware and PVR software can be found at the TitanTV.com site. This TV
listings page is the one I prefer for accessibility and ease of use. It
is designed to work with many PVR software to schedule recordings
directly from their listings grid. Look at their recommendations for
compatible hardware and software. I warn you however, accessibility has
not been a hot topic on these sites!

You said this solved your problem with the caps announcement. Could

Actually, I think Jaws 14 should have having the caps spoken as one of
the regular choices like they used to when you could adjust the amount
of pitch change for capitals. Surely most people want to know capital
 letters for editing purposes.

The other problem which is surmountable is that they mispronounce many

Re: [JAWS-Users] Controlling how alt+tab works

If you want to toggle back and forth between windows, just pressing Alt
+ Tab each time should do what you want. Each time it is used, it will
go to the last active window.

To complicate matters even more. In multi-document applications, like
Excel, you can cycle through all open Excel windows with Control + Tab.
Adding the Shift key cycles in the opposite direction.

Re: [JAWS-Users] I am trying to learn flexible web.

2012-10-25 Thread Don Marang
I never have any problem with the main Google results page. It is easy
once you know how it is layed out. Hit the number 2 in the numbers row
until you hear results. This goes to level 2 headings. There will be
Search Options, possibly Sponsored Results, and Results. Then each
result starts with a level 3 heading, so press 3 to hear their titles.

I sure do wish Accessible Google had not been taken down, I used it almost
daily at work no muss, no clutter, just the things I needed in a hurry for
my job, mostly medications or surgical tools, catheters, etc. Time is of
the essence in my work since they have production standards and if I can

it is for me. Sure, it is accessible if you have time to spend that is.

When you open Google you should automatically be positioned at the
search field because the focus is forced there, and JAWS respects
forced focus edit controls. So, you don't need to use flexible web to
do anything there - simply visit google.com and your cursor should be
placed on the edit field. Depending on your verbosity settings you may
hear press ENTER for forms mode, or if auto forms mode is set to on
then you should be placed in forms mode automatically and can begin
 typing.

The search results pages are a different matter though. Search for
something on Google and move into the search results. Then create a
new flexible web rule with JAWSKey+SPACE, X. The Create a new
customization radio button should already be selected, so hit ENTER
to move on. You don't want to hide anything, you want to start reading
somewhere; so select the second radio button on the next page and hit
ENTER. Now it's asking where exactly you want to be placed. There
should be various options, but the search results are all in a list so
the list option will most likely do the trick. On the next screen,
start at any list with ID = reso should do the trick. This should be
a consistent ID for all the lists containing Google search results. So
select that option and hit ENTER to activate the finish button..

Now we need to save that rule. Hit JAWSKey+Space, X again to enter the
flexible web settings, and select the Save temporary customizations
as a rule radio button. Enter any name you want for this rule and
make sure the customization you just made is checked in the list of
customizations that will form part of this rule. Since you've only
created one, it should be the only one in the list of customizations
 and it should be checked.

There's nothing else you need to change here. You want this applied
whenever a Google search results page is loaded, and the default
option is to apply your rule to the current site. So just hit ENTER to
 finish.

Bingo, now whenever you search on Google you should automatically be
in the list of results. Give it a shot and let us know if you need
further clarification on this very cool feature.

 Grant

That is what I used to do as well. It is tricky, but physically changes
the order in which the items are displayed on the screen.

I have more recently found an alternative method in JAWS, which merely
changes the order in which each item is announced. Press the Insert +
F2 keys and hit Enter on the Customize list view. In this JAWS
dialog, you can change the order of items and whether that item should
be spoken. I think JAWS can only handle one customized list per
application, so this is probably applied to all folders in Thunderbird.

Are you attempting to force an application to be displayed in the System
Tray, which would not normally be there, or are you attempting to
control which icons and thus which items will appear in the Insert + F11
list? Windows 7 normally starts only showing the icons which last had
notifications if there are too many. If this is what you are after, I
can explain how to control which icons are displayed.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Putting a Program in the Systems Tray

2012-09-29 Thread Don Marang
To clarify a bit more...

Once the Customize Notifications dialog is open, you can Tab and
eventually reach a list of applications that send notifications to the
System Tray. When you are focused on an item of interest, there are 3
options that can be reached using the up or down arrow keys:
- Show icon an notifications
- Hide icon and notifications
- Only show notifications

To make sure that the item you want shown in the JAWS Insert + F11
System Tray list appears, select Show icon and notifications. I
usually do not show JAWS or NVDA in the System Tray because their menus
can also be reached by Insert + j and Insert + n, respectively.

Re: [JAWS-Users] On web Jaws states Appolication On?

2012-09-22 Thread Don Marang
This means that the web page was designed to work more like an
application than a static web page. JAWS recognizes the use of more
dynamic HTML code, like ARIA, and attempts to interact more with the
page to get more information. This is somewhat similar to Forms Mode
for Input tags in the HTML. Unfortunately, few sites using these more
dynamic methods do not necessarily consider accessibility. If the page
does not seem to work well in Application Mode, press Insert + z to
toggle between modes.

2012-09-21 Thread Don Marang
I have seen this behavior 2 or 3 times using the beta. The Shift + F10
combo would not perform this function at this point either. I had way
too many applications and many IE9 Tabs open at the time. JAWS often
behaves strangely for me when memory gets scarce! I closed many windows
and restarted JAWS. The issue went away. I am not sure whether this is
worth reporting, since many applications, like VMware Workstation and
Excel, act strangely when memory gets scarce. That is why I got 8 GB
of memory when I bought my laptop, so this rarely happens.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws friendly FTP client with special features

2012-09-13 Thread Don Marang
Yes, in Windows 7, you can map a file server to a network drive letter.
Select Map... from the Tools menu of Windows Explorer. Then Tab to
the Connect to a Web Server and store documents and pictures link, and
follow the prompts in the wizard. This can be very convenient, since
it can always be available if you check the Reconnect at login.
However the performance is very slow.

Filezilla works well as long as you place the remote and local folders
panes to the proper locations and use the applications key. For
instance, select a folder or files in the local folder pane and press
the applications key. Then select upload.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem with jaws not starting immediatelywhen Iboot my PC - Start Up

2012-09-11 Thread Don Marang
It is certainly true that SSD drives also get some level of
defragmentation over time. However, since the memory is retrieved
directly and there is no seek time, this does not effect performance.
Additionally, so far the number of times you can write to each memory
location is far, far less than current hard drives, it is not
recommended to defragment SSD drives. I suppose those who have phobias
about cleanliness, might want to defrag occasionally, just for sanity.

if the only thing and your absolutely sure of it, so temparery internet

there are two main reasons for the use of ssd's, they don't usually fail a

you folks have a few things confused, and probly messed up, , if your
computer is properly tuned and cleaned it will boot with speach
generally within about 45 seconds to 1 minute max. my three win 7
machines all fit this cryteria, and a few folks with good clean
machines boot in 15 seconds with win 7.

get CCleaner, Get Recuva, Get win patrol (also useful in controling
startup and start sequencing startup items) and get Auslogics regestry
cleaner and defrag applications and start using them on a regular
 bases .

you won't be able to smooth everything out again, but i bet you can
greatly improve it, oh and don't forget Revo Uninstaller to remove
unnessacery programs and use it for all, utilizing the moderate or
intense removal scanning settings to make sure you get everything you
can of the scraps that most programs leave behind which cause this
 slowing of the computer.

hopefully this will assist you with these troubles, inthane

Re: [JAWS-Users] Is anyone using Carbonite with Win 7?

2012-08-14 Thread Don Marang
I use Carbonite on our desktop computer running Windows 7. The desktop
computer has a larger internal hard disk than my laptop. I use Karen's
Replicator to copy all of my important files from my laptop to the
desktop computer. Then Carbonite backups my data from both computers.
Since it is used by my son, I do not have JAWS on that computer. I have
NVDA installed instead.

There is a general HTML style window available through the System Tray
or the Programs menu. Everything is readable in this window, but it is
extremely frustrating and slow! Perhaps JAWS does better! It acts like
a web page with an unusual amount of JavaScript continually running.
The right mouse click context menus are much easier to use. It should
indicate if a particular file or folder is completely vacked up. The
sighted can easily see this at a glance for all files and folders,
because the icons are color coded! After my backup should be complete,
I look at the status of some high level folders. It may say everything
is currently backed up or that some files are not backed up. The trial
will only back up files in certain locations and will initially block
large files, like videos. You can use the Carbonite Properties dialog
in the context menus to add folders elsewhere and other filetypes you
want to backup. For instance, I have lots of media on this disk, which
is actually served up as a DLNA Media Server, at C:\Media. By using the
Applications key, then arrowing down to the Carbonite submenu and
selecting Properties, you can check whether to backup this folder. It
is that easy. I also made sure that all of the filetypes I wanted to
backup were included. This is a pain, but only needs to be done once.
Select any file in a folder that is flagged for backup of each type,
like .mp3, or .m4v. Open the Carbonite Properties of that file. Again
check the desired checkboxes to backup this file and for all files of
this filetype.

machine and not with a current version of Carbonite, I think, since the price
at that time was $44 and now it is $59.
So what worked on the tutorial was not the way it showed up on my computer.
Mainly I need to know how to tell what it actually backs up and how to tell
it to include something in the backup. The context menu says an item that
says not to back up an item but not one to include an item in the backup. My
free trial is expired now but I will purchase the program if it works on

switch back and forth to Daylight Savings Time where you are, make sure

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 13 with virtual machines?

2012-07-12 Thread Don Marang
VMware Workstation 8 is a program that you need to pay for. It costs
around $180, I think. It has features that are great if you are serious
about virtualization. Taking snapshots of the Virtual Machine is the
most useful. VMware Player is a free program and has the basic features
of Workstation, including creating Virtual Machines. A cheap, less
efficient way to take a snapshot using the free Player is to make a
copy of the folder on the host computer where the Virtual Machine is
stored. The Player will fill the needs of most casual users.

On both products, there is an Easy Install feature where you enter
information into the Virtual Machine Creation wizard, such as product
key, username, and password. Then after it creates the empty virtual
hard disk, it will perform an unattended installation. This works for
Windows, including Windows 8, and now some Linux installers.

Almost all if the functions of VMware Player 4 and Workstation 8 are
accessible without scripts. My scripts now will mostly add extras, such
as letting you arrow through your library of Virtual Machines and inform
you of their Power On Status. I have not yet posted scripts that work
with Workstation 8 and Player 4. I do not anticipate Player scripts
will add much.

The location of my scripts have changed due to Verizon started charging
for web space. It is now:

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 13 with virtual machines?

2012-07-12 Thread Don Marang
No! The Easy Install performs an unattended install. When it is
finished, it is configured enough to start narrator and install your
preferred screen reader. I prefer NVDA for Virtual Machines. It seems
slightly more responsive and there are no licensing issues. Freedom
Scientific requires an authorization key for each Virtual Machine
created, unless you just use the 40 minute demo mode. Sales actually
insisted on a separate license for each. Both Freedom Scientific and
Microsoft do not yet have special clauses or rates for Virtual
Machines. Of course, Open Source software, like NVDA or Linux/GNU can
be used on as many Virtual Machines as you want.

If there is a surprise screen during the process (or with some
inaccessible application in the Virtual Machine) you still might not
need sighted help! The new JAWS Convenience OCR feature can get you
through most of these situations! I had worked on similar solutions and
requested the feature for JAWS just for this purpose. Not only can it
usually read the inaccessible screen on the guest Virtual Machine, you
can directly interact with it and simulate mouse clicks on words that
the OCR extracted from a button or link!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Openning pdf links from Google search results

2012-07-11 Thread Don Marang
I think your Adobe Reader is set to use the IE Add-In. For
accessibility, especially on large PDF documents, I find it better to
have it open in the Adobe Reader application. To set this, do the
following:

1. Find the Adobe Reader X in the Start menu under All Programs.

2. Hit Enter on the Adobe Reader X item to open the full application.

3. Press Alt + e, to open the Edit menu. Arrow up to Accessibility and
arrow right to the sub menu and select Setup Assistant

4. On the 5th page of 5 there is a checkbox forDisplay PDF documents
in a web browser. Uncheck this box.

5. Finish the Assistant wizard and close the Reader application.

I hope this solves your issues!

Right clicking and selecting the save as option doesn't help since all it is

I do know that being able to view a pdf will depend on the quality of the

assuming that at least one result has got to be more or less ledgible text,
how can I go about either getting Jaws to read it or to be able to download
 the file first?

All this is in IE9. I may even give it a try in Firefox and play with some
add-ons, but would like to know if it's possible to do this with IE or
without having to use some other third party add-on with Mozilla first. I'm
using the latest JFW 13 too.

Yes, this happens to me often when there are a lot of applications
open. Mostly when Excel 2010 is one of the applications. Since
entering Tab characters into each application is not desirable, I give

I have started using Windows 7, I have been having a problem with using alt
tab to switch between programs. For example, lets say that I have open
JAWS, Excel, Word, Outlook, and Internet Explorer. I am in Excel and I need
to look up something on the net so I alt tab over to Internet Explorer.
Now, I try to alt tab back to Excel but I cannot. Alt tab will only go
between IE and JAWS. So, I use insert F10 to bring up the JAWS window list

I don't know for sure that Windows 7 is what is causing the problem but I

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and TV guides

2012-04-28 Thread Don Marang
I have had slightly better results using Firefox to set up a channel
lineup. This site often uses controls that do not work exactly like
JAWS expects. Many times, JAWS will indicate it is an edit field. Most
of the time, press Space to get into Forms Mode, then you can arrow up
and down in a pop up list. Hitting Tab or Enter seems to work best to
select the desired item. Custom lineups work the same, but in addition
you can just select your favorite channels from a standard lineup.
Therefore, I first add a lineup for DirecTV - Philly, then add a custom
lineup selecting from that lineup.

After hitting Enter on the Add lineup button, it goes to page 1 of 2
for setup. By selecting the image labeled Satellite, you should not get
Time Warner on the second page where you are taken. The second page
will ask for a zip code. Once entered, a list box of providers will
appear. Press Insert + Escape to make sure the JAWS info is updated.
You should be able to arrow down to other options in your area like
Dish, DirecTV, and C Band.

You will probably want to go to the Manage Channel lineup page to name
this lineup, create one or more custom lineups, and select the default
lineup.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel 2010

The quick way is to select the cells you want to change and hit Control
+ 1 to bring up the Format menu. If necessary, arrow left or right to
the Numbers page. Now you should recognize all of the options.

In Excel 2007 or Excel 2010, I highly recommend using the JAWS virtual
menus. It allows you to navigate through the new ribbons like menus.
This makes it much easier to find all available options. Going into the
JAWS Settings Manager with Insert + 6, changing to the default settings
with Control + Shift + d, and search for ribbon. Arrow down to Use
Virtual Ribbons and hit Space until it says checked. Now Tab to the
OK button and hit Enter.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws slower in responding with imap accounts than pop with Outlook 2010?

2012-02-21 Thread Don Marang
Post Office Protocol (POP3) has a much simpler interface with your email
server on the web than Interactive Mail Access Access Protocol (IMAP).
POP3 just retreives everything in your Inbox on the server at regular
intervals. By default, it then deletes the messages from the Invox on
the server. The message is only on your PC at this point.

IMAP synchronizes folders on your email server with the folders on your
PC email client. The messages remain on the server until they are
deleted. This is what makes IMAP better for use when reading email from
different computers and devices. Each device is synchronized to have
the latest, will not miss messages read on another device, or need to
delete the same messages on different devices. These are problems you
will likely encounter reading POP3 email on a computer and a smart
phone. IMAP synchronizes several folders, like Drafts, Sent Mail, Junk
Mail, and Trash. It might also synchronize other archive or labels in
Gmail. If it is working slower than expected, perhaps it is
synchronizing more folders or details than necessary for you. Most
clients have ways, usually through using the Applications key on the
folder, to set which folders should be synchronized, or hidden. It is
also possible to indicate that for this folder, just synchronize the
headers rather than the entire messages. Reducing the amount of work
the client needs to perform to keep up with your email will make it
snappier!

 Hello list,

I've been working with Outlook 2010 and have set up a few email accounts.
One thing I'm noticing though, is that jaws is noticeably slower when
working with my imap emails as opposed to the ones I have set up as pop.
With the pop emails, when I press the delete button or arrow through the
list view of messages, Jaws works fine and as it always done, but when
working with the imap messages and again, deleting or arrowing through them,
Jaws gets sluggish and speech is delayed or I sometimes have to just press
the say line command to get Jaws to speak the next message's information. I
am using the latest JFW 13 release and am working with Outlook 2010 on a
Win7 Dell. The only difference between these email accounts is the pop and
 imap configuration.
Are others experiencing this issue or might they have an idea of how to
better improve the JFW slow performance?

 Thanks,

No, you're following them ok. And I also find that the control + capslock +
leftbracket 'equivalent' won't work, in a laptop configuration, to do the

Anything else with the FN key? Which version of JAWS are you using?
this functionality was formerly known as tether JAWS to PC.

Use the CAPSLOCK key which can function as the JAWS key. My idea was
 that if
the JAWS cursor had become linked or 'tethered' to the PC cursor, that
 they
be untethered. The PC cursor won't always operate correctly if the
 JAWS
cursor is tethered to it. This causes awkward navigation problems.

 Hi all,

I am genuinely confused by something that's happening with
 FileZilla.
 I've
used it successfully in the past to transfer a number of files to

 from
an ftp site, but today something odd is happening. IN my experience
 the only
way to upload a file is to arrow to the file name, route the Jaws
 cursor to
the PC one, then right click using jaws keystrokes and select the
appropriate option. This worked fine just a few weeks ago, but today
 I
 find
nothing happens when I go through this sequence of keystrokes. Jaws
 simply
says right click but doesn't seem to execute the command. I'd
 welcome any
suggestions for a workaround. For what it's worth, I'm running jaws
 12
 on
 windows XP.

 Many thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel: reading content of column A

2011-12-28 Thread Don Marang
The new behavior sounds like FS has fixed a bug. To me, the expected
behavior when using the left arrow when in column A should be not to
say anything. Repeating the contents would be confusing to me and not
provide any feedback that I was at the left edge. Otherwise, I might
think I had duplicate columns. An improvement I might suggest, is if
top and bottom edge sound indication is turned on, it might be nice to
provide the sound when at the left or right edge as well as top and
bottom. Currently. it makes no sound when at the top or left edge.

Amazon site for years. I spent a lot of money on Monday. I had almost
all gifts wrapped since I only have one finger left on my right hand. I

scattered all over the country.

I love the Prime membership free two day shipping! However, so far I
have not paid for the service. In November I joined the Mom's club,
designed for new Mothers. It does not provide all of the benefits such
as free video streaming. It does provide the free 2 day shipping and a
30% discount on diapers and large discounts in their baby section. My
youngest is 19, so I don't need these products, so I may not be able to
keep extending the initial 3 month membership by spending at least $25 a
month on baby supplies.

The only complaint about the main site I have is, I wish they would have
the product titles in search results as a HTML heading. Making each
title as a heading level 4, would not need to change the look of the

this. Since they already provide a segregated, limited view through a
separate accessible site, they probably do not think this is a valid

Re: [JAWS-Users] Selecting an entire worksheet in Excel2010

2011-11-30 Thread Don Marang
To select all cells in a worksheet, simply press Control + a. Then you
can Press Control +c to copy and go to the next worksheet using Control
+ PageDown. Finally paste all of the cells with Control + v.

It may be easier to move or copy the worksheet, rename the sheet, or
other worksheet manipulation rather than cutting and pasting. The
worksheet names are located at the bottom of the window. By default,
they are simply named sheet 1, sheet 2, sheet 3, and so on. There
probably is a better way to do this, but I turn on the JAWS Cursor with
the NumPad minus (-). Then press PageDown to get to the bottom of the
window. Find the sheet name that you want to manipulate by using the
Control +Right Arrow keys several times. Now simulate a right mouse
click with the NumPad star (*) keys. This will bring up a context menu
of actions you can take on that sheet.

It's good first to select the text you want to make heading. If you

alt+shift+ right arrow to make it a lower level. For example if yu
have heading level 3 and press alt+shift+right arrow, you will make it
level 4. If you press it again it will become level 5. It works the
opozit way with alt+shift+left arrow - you make the heading upper
level. Alt+shift+ up and down arrows do different thing.

 Hello listers.

A fellow lister shared the alt-shift-arrow keys to quickly assign
diff style types to text in MS word. This sounds like a very handy
 hot key combo.
However when I use MS Word 2007, JFW 13 hitting alt-shift-arrow keys
(up, down, left, right) I can't seem to use it or understand how to
use it to assign any style type e.g. normal, heading1, heading 2 or
another style. Is there some documentation on using this hot key
combo to quickly assign any of the long list of style types to any
 highlighted text in MS Word?

Or are there any other hot key combos to do this aside from
 alt-shift-arrow keys?

 Thx much!

Re: [JAWS-Users] spreadsheet similar to excel

The only Excel replacements I know of are Libre Office or Open Office
Calc. Both are free, Open Source applications for many platforms. I
use it on Vinux, where the orca screen reader works well with Libre Office.

I attempted to use Libre Office Calc on Windows 7. I could not read the
contents of a cell with JAWS. Perhaps this is just because it is a Java
application and I have not reinstalled the Java Access Bridge each time
I updated Java.

Have you looked into using Quickbooks online through a browser? I have

I currently produce my invoices using Word and track income and expenses

Good luck with your evaluation.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange Items Appearing in Windows 7 System Tray/Notification Area

2011-10-19 Thread Don Marang
Yes the Notification area in Windows 7 has evolved from that used in
XP. The Solve PC issues: 2 messagesis an alert from a smart service
that runs in the background and looks for problems and knows how to
automatically repair it. This notice makes you aware there were / are
problems. It also allows you to look through the log of messages. Even
though it fixes a problem, it might be important to know if it is
continually fixing the same problem.

In the Taskbar Properties, there is a checkbox to Show all icons in the
Notification area. I thought there was a way to Hide inactive icons as
well. Perhaps that option is only available if all icons option is
checked? I prefer to choose exactly which icons are shown all of the
time, like Volume and Drop Box. This way, I have easy access to those
features. Other notifications still pop up, like Windows Update, if
there is something to download and install.

Since this is a brand new computer, I would attempt to
remove all of the
bloated software included by the manufacturor. Most are
paid to include
trial versions from other companies. Most of these, like
Norton, you
could not pay me to use. They also install a ton of
accessory and extra
software for supporting their hardware. Some run in the
background and
are meant to keep your drivers from them up-to-date.
Unfortunately, I
have found all software from manufacturers not usable! I
usually
attempt once. I remove or disable almost all of their
software.

Re: [JAWS-Users] table reading features in jaws 13

2011-09-15 Thread Don Marang
I am really happy that they included this feature! I had written this
capability into scrippts ever since JAWS 9. I find it very helpful for
large tables. I wanted to quickly move through the TV listings grid on
TitanTV.com. Not all HTML tables properly label their headers. At some
point in JAWS 12 updates, the default for announcing headers is for
labeled table headers only. The TitanTV.com site, like many other sites
do not properly label their headers. The new Quick Settings dialog now
allows me to set the persistence of this setting. I set it to announce
column and row headings. Now it automatically announces the channel and
time for each program as I simply arrow around the grid without needing
any user scripts!

I also use this feature on many tables because it makes it clearer where
you are in a table, especially if laid out sensibly.

Hello,

I have not yet heard the podcast from Freedom Scientific, but I want to point out to
people using Office 2010 with OneNote in the suite that you can do OCR on image files
using that program. You can extract text from .tif, .jpg, .pdf, etc. If you open a .TIF
file that contains text (in Windows Photo viewer for example), simply copy the text to
the clipboard. Open OneNote using Windows key with N. Paste the contents of the
clipboard. If you get a pop up menu choose to open the file as a print out so you can
add notes. When the image is pasted arrow up or down to the line that says something
like machine generated text and use application key. Arrow down to the menu
choice for copying text from image and press enter key. You can then open Word and paste
the text. It does a pretty good job.

Take care.

I agree with you about the OCR.
In Israel, I use ABBYY FineReader 11 professional edition because the OCR is

So, JAWS 13 will not have Hebrew OCR but Baum uses FineReader and has Hebrew.
But, because I don't like Baum and I love FS, I will be stuck for this feature!

2011-09-13 Thread Don Marang
While it does not fill the needs of performing OCR on entire files,
convenience OCR has been long needed. I sent FS this reqquest more than
once. I also wrote a JAWS scrippt and later a Visual Basic appluication
intended to perforn OCR of a window on the screen. It was based upon
the OCR COM object in Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007. It never reliably
registered when installing on all computers.

My main goal was to help determine what was happening within a VMware
Virtual Machine. However, it also comes in handy on websites of
utilities which insist on displaying an image of an account statement!
As someone else mentioned, prices are often shown as an image to prevent
automated bargain bots from grabbing their price.

page Pdf file. Which means if I need to access the whole doc which is almost
always the case with anyone, u still need to get another expensive PDF
converter/OCR software. And honestly in my case at least, and I'd assume in
most blind people's cases, we already know the topic of any PDF document we
download with an intention and or need to access all of it. I'd challenge that
most blind people don't just download a PDF file not knowing at all what the
heck it contains. In al such cases the JFW 13 OCr feature doesn't make any diff
really.

Now of course the situation is quite diff if u take a pic of a print document u
have no idea what it is using a camera and save then upload it to your PC as an
image file and then use JFW 13's OCR feature. IN this case yes its valuable.

IN summary this feature is of any value only and only if you have no clue what
the soft PDF or image file contains.

I have not created any DAISY books, but I have looked into what is
available. Have you looked at the solutions promoted at the daisy.org
site? They have a pipeline Open Source project for more advanced
creation. They also have links to other solutions. One is a plugin for
Word. It is not a typical Windows type installation. You will need to
follow the directions and copy files to the proper location. The next
time you open Word, a detailed set of instructions will appear as a
document on the use of the plugin. It creates new menus for DAISY
creation. Since it is all done in Word, it will be familiar and
accessible.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about virtual software

2011-08-29 Thread Don Marang
The VMware Player is free and there is a more advanced program BMware
Workstation wich has to be purchased. The last time I checked it was
arount $190. It adds features like taking snapshots and movies to make
it easier to restore previous states of the guest Operating System.
Since the guest Operating System is contained in files, making a copy of
the entire directory of the Virtual Machine provides an easy backup,
acting much like a snapshot.

There are JAWS scripts that were written by Chris Hallsworth and myself.
We started them for Player 2.5, which had many accessibility issues.
Player 3.x really does not require any scripts. The Player now also
allows you to create Virtual Machines just like Workstation. In my view,
the Player free product meets most users needs. Advanced users might
want to consider the added features of Workstation.

The scripts for Player and Workstation are bundled together and located at:

http://mysite.verizon.net/marangs/VMware.html

Verizon no longer allows ftp to their free web space, so these pages
will be moved soon to DonaldMarang.org.

When I had this problem, FS Tech Support had me run JAWS in default mode
to see if anything in the User Settings folder was the problem. To
check this, stop JAWS by pressing Alt + F4. Then hit Windows + r, to
open the Run dialog, and type jaws12 /default, without the quotes.

If this fixes your problem, chances are you added a personalized setting
for this spreadsheet. Renaming the PersonalizedSettings folder,
should solve the problem. Go to Start menu All Programs JAWS 12
Explore JAWS Explore My Settings, select the PersonalizedSettings

Re: [JAWS-Users] latest version of jaws 12 with Excel 2007

2011-08-15 Thread Don Marang
Within the last couple of JAWS 12 updates, Freedom Scientific has
revamped the Excel scripts. They completely changed how they store
settings. If you had any personalizations to spreadsheets, such as
reading headings, these settings files will make the entire Excel
interface not work properly! They did a lousy job of informing the user
or migrating safely to the new settings. However, removing the old
settings and setting them up again is exasperating, but it is worth it!
The new Excel scripts are vastly improved! My poor responsiveness
problems completely disappeared! There are some new capabilities of
these features as well.

Either go to your User Settings folder (Start menu All Applications
JAWS 12 Explore JAWS Explore My Settings) and rename the
PersonalizedSettings folder or run JAWS in default mode. This will
remove all of the user customizations for Excel. Open the spreadsheet
you were having trouble with before. Hopefully, this will make the
Excel interface accessible again.

If you had other customizations, like for web pages, simply copy them
from the renamed folder to the new PersonalizedSettings folder.

2011-08-15 Thread Don Marang
You can do this through the menus; Start Menu All Programs JAWS 12
Tools Start JAWS with Eloquence. I think pressing Windows + r, for
the Run dialog and typing jaws12 /default, without the quotes, will
work as well.

This will ignore all user scripts and personalizations for that session.

Within the last couple of JAWS 12 updates, Freedom Scientific has
revamped the Excel scripts. They completely changed how they store
settings. If you had any personalizations to spreadsheets, such as
reading headings, these settings files will make the entire Excel
interface not work properly! They did a lousy job of informing the
user or migrating safely to the new settings. However, removing the
old settings and setting them up again is exasperating, but it is
worth it! The new Excel scripts are vastly improved! My poor
responsiveness problems completely disappeared! There are some new
capabilities of these features as well.

Either go to your User Settings folder (Start menu All Applications
JAWS 12 Explore JAWS Explore My Settings) and rename the
PersonalizedSettings folder or run JAWS in default mode. This will
remove all of the user customizations for Excel. Open the
spreadsheet you were having trouble with before. Hopefully, this
will make the Excel interface accessible again.

If you had other customizations, like for web pages, simply copy them
from the renamed folder to the new PersonalizedSettings folder.

2011-08-15 Thread Don Marang
The personalization settings that have changed in Excel are for features
tied to files, such as heading announcements, monitor cells, and so on.
If you don't use these types of features in Excel, this should not
effect you. If you do and noticed that JAWS acts strange in Excel
after the update, quit JAWS and restart JAWS in the with default
settings. This can be done by pressing Insert + r, to open the run
dialog, then type jaws12 /default, without the quotes. If JAWS now
works as expected, the old settingsare getting in the way. Report back
if running in default mode fixes your problem, and I will go through
fixing this permanantly.

Make sure you have the Solo versions. The other Real Speak voices with
the same names are also available as SAPI5 voices. The Solo versions
talk directly to JAWS and are much more responsive. There is a entry in
the JAWS menu (Insert + j) Help Web Resources Real Speak Solo
direct download page, where you get these voices.

There are several down sides to these great sounding voices (I like the
Karen voice with the Australian accent). These voices can not go nearly
as fast and they are not capable of raising the pitch to indicate
capitals. I (and probably many others) complained to Freedom Scientific
about this. At the time they had removed the capability to indicate
upper case by saying Cap. They listened. Now this can be done in the
Speech and Sounds Scheme Manager. Their audio tutorial (actually a FS
DAISY file on the Speech and Sound Schemes walks you through setting up
upper case notification this way as an example.

From my experience with JAWS Scripting, it is my educated guess that
there is something that temporarily takes the focus off of the Desktop,

Hi Stewart,

Personally I have no idea why Jaws is saying desktop twice. On my
computers
Jaws says desktop only 1 time but, as far as not going directly to the
desktop when starting, that happens to me all the time. It will go
directly
to the desktop then, it starts landing on the start button or the clock.
When it does this, I tab 1 time Alt + tab 1 time that puts me on the
desktop. 1 other thing to try is press the windows key + D, see if that
will put you on the desktop. I know this doesn't explain why your
computer
is doing what it is doing, but I'm just letting you know that you are not
the only one that has this unexplainable crap happen to them! I guess
Doctor Phil ain't such a bad idea afterall!LOL LOL

Re: [JAWS-Users] Blocking Text with JAWS

2011-07-26 Thread Don Marang
So you are two updates behind. It is not new features or bug fixes it
seems you need. Downloading and installing the update will set all of
the key mappings to their default.

Just in case you are curious, here is how to check the key mappings and
how to fix them.

1. Open Word.

2. Press JAWS (Insert for desktop layout; CapsLock for laptop layout) +
F2, to bring up the Run JAWS Manager dialog. Hit the letter k to
select the Keyboard Manager, and hit the Enter key.

3. This will place you in the Keyboard Manager on the Microsoft Word
application. Press Tab to go the list of key bindings for that
application. It is a list of scripts available for that application and
the key combination, if any, that invokes it.

4. Press Control + F, then hit the combination you are looking for, in
this case F8. Hit the Enter key to start the search.

5. In Word the F8 key should be mapped to the SelectionByUnitMode
script. If it is mapped to something else, you probably want to press
the Delete key. This does not delete the script, just this key
combination to invoke it. Now move down the alphabetical list to the
SelectionByUnitMode script. It may not show any key combination or it
may be reassigned to something else. If the new assignment is not
desired, press the Delete key. Press Control + a to Assign a new key
combination. It will ask for the new combination, hit F8 and then the
Enter key.

6. Now press Control + Shift + d to show the scripts in the default
script file. These are the scripts available at the desktop and for all
applications. Again press Control + f, then F8, and hit the Enter key.
It should respond No key found. If it is mapped to a script, it
probably should be deleted.

Have you tried Quick Keys mode in Word? It works much like Quick
Navigation in Internet Explorer. Quick Keys is enabled and
disabled by using JAWS + z as a toggle. When in Quick Keys mode,
you will not be able to edit the document. It merely lets you
navigate the document with single keys. Like in IE, h will move to
the next heading, p will move to the next paragraph, and so on. If
the chapters start with a heading, such as heading level 2, just
pressing 2 will move to the next chapter.

For example, this could be used with the F8 selection as follows:

1. Move to the beginning of the text to be selected. Then press F8.

2. Turn on Quick Keys with JAWS (Insert) + z.

3. Press the 2 key to move to the next chapter. It will read the
entire amount selected, which annoys me, so I rarely use F8 for
selection. If I am confident about the selection, I just continue
on the next step.

4. Copy the selection using Control + c.

5. Return to normal by pressing Escape to exit the selection mode
and then JAWS + z to exit Quick Keys mode.

I hope this is more like what you are looking for.

Hi Kelby,

Try the information below to see if this will do what you are
wanting to
accomplish.

The F8 key in Word is a Toggle. You press the F8 key a different
number of
times to select different amounts of text.
Pressing the F8 key 1 time turns extended selection mode on. In
this mode
you can arrow up or down to select text line by line.
Pressing the F8 key 2 times will copy the highlighted word.
Pressing the F8 key 3 times will copy the sentence the cursor is
in.
Pressing the F8 key 4 times will copy the paragraph the cursor is
in.
Pressing the F8 key 5 times will copy the document.

Hope this has helped. Take care.

Have you tried Quick Keys mode in Word? It works much like Quick
Navigation in Internet Explorer. Quick Keys is enabled and disabled
by using JAWS + z as a toggle. When in Quick Keys mode, you will not
be able to edit the document. It merely lets you navigate the
document with single keys. Like in IE, h will move to the next
heading, p will move to the next paragraph, and so on. If the
chapters start with a heading, such as heading level 2, just pressing
2 will move to the next chapter.

For example, this could be used with the F8 selection as follows:

1. Move to the beginning of the text to be selected. Then press F8.

2. Turn on Quick Keys with JAWS (Insert) + z.

3. Press the 2 key to move to the next chapter. It will read the
entire amount selected, which annoys me, so I rarely use F8 for
selection. If I am confident about the selection, I just continue on
the next step.

4. Copy the selection using Control + c.

5. Return to normal by pressing Escape to exit the selection mode
and then JAWS + z to exit Quick Keys mode.

I hope this is more like what you are looking for.

This actually was not what I am asking. Let us say I need to
copy a chapter from a textbook that is several pages long. How
can I do this, other than going paragraph by paragraph and
appending? I know sighted people can do this, and I can do it
quite easily with a notetaker.

Take care.
Mike

Brief question from a first-timer. Is there a way to block
text--as in multiple paragraphs--for selection in a document
with
JAWS? Like highlighting a certain section of thedocument that
is
not just a line, word or paragraph for copying and/or cutting?

2011-07-11 Thread Don Marang
Since this is a brand new computer, I would attempt to remove all of the
bloated software included by the manufacturor. Most are paid to include
trial versions from other companies. Most of these, like Norton, you
could not pay me to use. They also install a ton of accessory and extra
software for supporting their hardware. Some run in the background and
are meant to keep your drivers from them up-to-date. Unfortunately, I
have found all software from manufacturers not usable! I usually
attempt once. I remove or disable almost all of their software.

although the delay is not such that I can't live with it,
approximately
two seconds, on a brand new quad cor processor pc with four gig of

Re: [JAWS-Users] How do you set control panel to read as a list in windows 7 home premium?

2011-06-19 Thread Don Marang
I do not think it is possible to view the Control Panel as a list in
Windows 7. It is possible to view it as a grid of icons. At least in
this view, first letter navigation works.

Do the following:

1. Open the Control Panel.

2. Press Control + e, to get to the Search box.

3. Tab once to what is labeled the Category button.

4. Press Space on this button. It is actually a drop down list. Arrow

Re: [JAWS-Users] ie problem fixed

2011-05-31 Thread Don Marang
There is a way to read the DOM - Document Object Model, in IE 8.
Pressing F12 opens the current page in the Development Tools window. It
is not 100% accessible and might not make much sense unless you read up
on DOM first.

I dont think you can view it in ie without some form of developer add
in, I use chrome and magnification to inspect page elements!

   Strange.
The tags I mentioned are in the head of the document in the source

I think that something in your script must be moving them.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Disabling In line frames in IE

2011-05-19 Thread Don Marang
It would be much safer to disable it on a site by site basis. Many
sites only use in-line frames for ads. Other sites might use them for
content, especially if it uses some type of server side script. Our
local radio station posts all of the School closings on a separate page
of their site. It has tons of links with the content somewhere in the
middle. The data is displayed in it's own in-line frame. The fastest
way to navigate to it is by frame.

If you find this to be the exception to the rule, you could make the
default to be ignore in-line frames and just enable them for sites you
know have valid content in an in-line frame. However, if the default is
to ignore in-line frames, How would you ever know?

Hi,

JAWS has a setting to turn off in line frames on webpages. I would like to be
able to disable these but was wondering if I am likely to miss any important
information and whether I can enable them for specific websites like Ebay?
I've usually notice them as google ads or links to share a webpage on facebook
etc.

Thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] chase.com

2011-05-10 Thread Don Marang
I am able to login just fine. I did not attempt to reset my password.
It seems they display some fancy animation on about every page. The
page itself loads slow. Then for at least 60 to 90 seconds all I can
get to is the Flash start and end announcements. Just wait a minute or
two, then press Insert + Escape to refresh the window. It then operates
normally for me.

Re: [JAWS-Users] webvisum log in problem

2011-04-26 Thread Don Marang
It sounds like your Webvisum extension has not been enabled. Go to
Tools Add-Ons, switch to the extensions tab, select the Webvisum
extension in the list and press Tab. The Webvisum no longer seems to be
automatically enabled when it is installed.

Another good way to check whether you are logged in is to go to Tools
Webvisum and arrow up. There will be log in and log out options. If
the log in option is unavailable. you are logged in.

Hello,
I would like to know about the webvisum add-on of firefox. Since
couple of months, I was using this add-on successfully. Very recently,
after getting formatted my computer I have again installed the firefox
version 3.5 and downloaded the webvisum and tried to log in with my
old account. But to my surprise, after inserting the log in details in
firefox/tools menu/add-on/webvisum preferences/general tab and
pressing space bar on option button in this tab page, despite giving
my log in details as used by me earlier I could not get the message
“you are loged in to webvisum ok button” on restarting the firefox.

I was getting this loged in message earlier but now I am unable to log
in to webvisum. So could anyone suggest me any trouble shooting
procedure for my problem as mentioned above.
Also please do let me know as to:
1 Am I right in following the steps to get the log in to webvisum?
2 do I need to follow any additional steps to log in to webvisum as
per any current changes made to webvisum by developer of this add-on?

Your response in this regard is highly solicited.
Thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel set match not fixed

2011-04-26 Thread Don Marang
I had difficulty with the new JAWS RC release. After installation, I
could do nothing in Excel 2010 except get to the ribbons! They have
totally revamped JAWS for Excel. It is not sluggish anymore. I also
noticed nice changes, such as announcing when you are entering different
title regions and the region is announced when in the verbosity settings
dialog.

If you always set the row and column titles through the verbosity
settings dialog, press Space on the title override option to get the
override for all files option. This should only need to be done
once. Them, you should only need to open this dialog on the desired
cell and set which titles are wanted and press Space on the row and / or
column option to set this cell.
