Re: [JAWS-Users] unable to add to cart
Steve, they were two sites one called Seeking Health.com and the other amymyersmd.com. I am trying to buy supplements from them. I tried IE, Firefox and Chrome and none worked. It is possible to call these places and order over the phone which is what I'll have to do tomorrow, but it is just wrong that I can't do it online. I have an older Jaws, but from what people have written, that's not the problem. I do have NVDA downloaded and honestly didn't think to try it. But for me it is just too aggrevating to have to go through all these various browsers, screen readers, etc to accomplish a simple task of putting something in a cart. Thanks. Re: [JAWS-Users] Amazon Accessibility Issue
Okay, Rebecca, this is Judy and I went to both the regular Amazon.com and the Amazon.com/access sites. I also usually use IE 11 but had trouble with it today but I've also had trouble using it at work so it may be a browser rather than an Amazon problem. I just recently used the Amazon access site to purchase a bunch of stuff with no trouble. Just now going to the regular amazon site, I got nowhere with the "your accoujnt" link. I tried it with IE and with Google chrome with the same results...nowhere could I find any links for payment options. So I then went to the amazon.com/access account and using google chrome I could do it. I agree that we should be able to use all sites the same as everyone else and not have a separate access site, but at this point in my life I am just happy when I can do what I need to do. So if you use that site and open the "your account" link you can then use H and go down through a bunch of headings. You want the heading that says "amazon wallet." The first link in that list says "manage your payment options" so open that link and then you can edit or delete cards, set up your default card to use etc. I hope this helps. Maybe they just recently made some changes, who knows. I'm not sure, but I think that person was possibly me. I suggested that someone might have some unwanted background processes running on their computer rather than a virus or malware that can be detected with a scan. These can slow the machine down by taking up ram and processor time. I realised when I posted the message to the list, that I might have opened a small can o' worms. It used to be relatively easy to do this in, say, Windows XP. But on my Windows 10 machine, there are so many processes running all of the time, that it's very difficult to keep track of them, and what they do. I consider myself a person of intermediate computer experience and nowadays when I look at the task manager I feel a small headache coming on at the prospect of looking up all these unknown processes on the internet. However, as you have Windows 7, things might be a little easier. I suggest opening the utility msconfig. You can do this from the run prompt. >From there, you can go through items that run at startup. You should have a tab called 'startup", which, if you select it, opens a list view where you can select and de-select items. It might help you to look at task manager, too, to see what processes are running and if there is something there that doesn't need to be. Unfortunately, this might involve a good amount of research on the internet to determine the nature of particular programs. So, if you don't have some time on your hands, it can seem a daunting proposition. There are other utilities that can help you as well. Sysinternals suite contains a number of such programs, and is available from the Microsoft site. Most of these programs are not intended for everyday users, but a few of them can still be useful. There is one called autoruns that lets you look in-depth at everything your computer does at startup and lets you remove items. Again though, it's easy to jump the gun and remove something that you don't recognise or doesn't appear to be working, only to find that your computer does, in fact, use it for something. So, be careful. If you want to go further into this off-list, I'd be willing to help some, but I don't have Windows 7, so my own experience wouldn't be the same as yours. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Judy Sent: March 18, 2018 2:08 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] programs running in the background Hi, all, a week or so ago someone asked about their computer running slow and someone sent a post describing how to check to see if there were unnecessary programs running in the background that could be slowing things down. Re: [JAWS-Users] Having a song play when an e-mail is opened?
The size is in the kb range, as it only lasts a minute, and I can make that into a wav file. Looking forward to trying these instructions. Thanks. Judy -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Steve Sent: Tuesday, March 13, 2018 12:47 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Having a song play when an e-mail is opened? Depending on which email program you use, you can do that, but if you want it to open when the email is opened, then you have to make that segment of your song a .wav file extension. Once you convert that, you may need to edit down to a size that is less than one MB. Since you are using Outlook from Office 2010 as your email client, do the following: Use MsWord as your editor to create an email message. In your office program go to Tools, Options, Mail tab; mail format. On that tab, set your message format to HTML, plain-text won't work. Hit Apply, and OK to Exit the options area. Now, create a new message. A dialog will pop up that Word is starting your email editor. There will be the typical email fields, (I don't know how well Jaws will read them -- I haven't tried this in my Office MsWord 2010 version.) You will need a Web Tools toolbar, which you can make visible by hitting View, Toolbars, and finding the Web Tools option. It will pop-up a small window with various icons. One of them is the "Sound" icon, you may need to simulate a mouseclick on it; it will then pop-up the background sound option. You can then hit the Browse button and browse to your St. Patrick's Day file. I said above that it needs to be in .wav format, but in looking around, it also supports .mid, .midi, .au, .rmi, .aif and .aiff. Many people recommend using .midi. After you press open on the sound file, you can then choose how many times you want that message sound to play -- from one to five times, or to infinite which means it will play until the message is closed. - Original Message - From: "Judy Jones" <sonshine...@gmail.com> To: <jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 13, 2018 1:15 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Having a song play when an e-mail is opened? >I have seen this done, and would like to send a St. Patrick's Day greeting > that way. > > > > I have the tune in an mp3 format. > > > > Is there any way to do this? > > > > Thanks! > > > > Judy > > > > For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: > http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

[JAWS-Users] which version of Jaws?
Hi, I am currently using Win 7 and Jaws 14. I am considering updating the Jaws.haven't before due to financial situations, but I don't know if Jaws 18 or Jaws 2018 would be better. Hit enter on properties, and hopefully, you'll be at the shortcut page. By tabbing through the list of options, you'll find a place to enter that shortcut key. You may have to hit apply and ultimately ok, but once the shortcut is saved, you then should be able to start Jaws with that shortcut command if needed. The reply above yours from David there says "voiceover on the mac". At first I kind of scoffed at that. I'm not a mac user and probably never will be. But here's the thing. As PC users, I think we are given a variety of options and tools, and that's one of the great things about being a PC users. I used to access the web through Telnet and a linux shell. The only browser that would work was lynx and it couldn't display framed webpages properly. It was a really frustrating experience back then, for sure. I agree that the level of frustration for me is getting pretty hard to take some days. But actually, for the average sighted computer user, they tend to pick one browser they like and they can do whatever they want on it. There's no jumping around and spending an hour going between three browsers with one website trying to see what will work so you can buy that one thing you want, when a sighted person is done in ten minutes. There needs to be some continuity here seems to me. I will also use JAWS 18 and NVDA 2017.2for this tutorial, because they both work the same in Chrome. Finally, I will use Windows 10 Creators Update latest public build. I will assume that you have downloaded and installed Chrome. There should be a shortcut on your desktop. Section One: Launching Chrome: One way to Launch Chrome, is to press the Windows key or CTRL+Escape and type Chrome in the search edit field, and press enter when you hear JAWS say Chrome. However, since you have already downloaded Chrome, You will have a shortcut icon on your desktop. So next, find the shortcut for Chrome on your desktop, and press enter to open Chrome. The short cut will actually say Google Chrome, so press G to find the Google Chrome icon on your desktop. The first very important step, is to press Windows+up arrow to maximise the window. Chrome often opens with the window not maximise, and you will get undesirable results. Section Two: Bringing up a web site. Press CTRL+L or Alt+D and type the following: www.freedomscientific.com The Freedom Scientific web site comes up very quickly. All navigation commands like: H for heading, E for edit field, C for combo box, and so on all work just the same in Chrome. Section Three: The Virticle Chrome menu: I will press the Alt key. The Chrome menu is open. This is a very large virticle menu that you just keep pressing up and down arrow through. I will press insert+up arrow to hear the first option in this menu. New Tab, CTRL+T. You can press that command right from the web site you are on. New Window, CTRL+N You can press these commands right from your web page, instead of coming here. New incognito Window. History sub menu. I will press right arrow here to see what is in this sub menu! History, CTRL+H So, there is a key command for reading your history. You can read a few sites you were on right here. I will press left arrow to close this history sub menu. Downloads, CTRL+J There is the command for opening your downloads you have downloaded with Chrome. Next, the important Bookmarks sub menu. I will press right arrow, to open this. I hear, bookmark this page, CTRL+D That command will bookmark the page you are reading. Next down arrow, says show bookmarks bar, CTRL+Shift+B That command, will show your bookmarks on your Chrome browser for all to see. I do not want that. Here is the important one. manage bookmarks The command is, CTRL+Shift+O In here, you can organize your bookmarks into folders, see the bookmarks you have imported from different browsers, and very importantly, you can download, to your computer, an HTML file of all of your bookmarks in Chrome. On your computer, you can press enter on this file, after it downloads, and a page will show up in Chrome with a list of all bookmarks you have saved in Chrome. This is an awesome way to download all of your bookmarks right to your computer, so you can back them up. That is all for manage bookmarks. Next, I hear import bookmarks and settings. press enter on this, and you can import all bookmarks and settings from IE, and Firefox, right into Google Chrome, and they will be in their corresponding folders. Now, I hear all of my saved bookmarks as I continue to arrow down. Very important! Sometimes, when I open that bookmarks sub menu, I do not land on the choices I mension here, but instead, I start hearing my saved bookmarks. If this happens, I press up arrow a few times, and it gets me to these choices. Keep in mind, that many of these choices, like bookmark manager, have key commands, so you do not have to come to this bookmarks sub menu at all. You only need to come here most of the time, to arrow through your saved
[JAWS-Users] application mode and pc cursor

If I press it again it turns back on the application mode. This doesn't work on my home computer. When I press jaws and Z it toggles the application mode on and off, but when it's on it really doesn't work very well and I have that annoying "application control" statement. Hi Adrian, Yes, I assume that Judy selected the desired text before trying to make it a link. Regarding CTRL+Z, it is probably a typo, since CTRL+Z is for Undo. Trying Pass Key Through (JAWS+3) is a good idea. Since she's using IE, she should press this JAWS command, then ALT+L, then this JAWS command again and finally ENTER. Additionally, Judy could also try changing, at least temporarily, the Link Activation option in Quick Settings. This option defines wetter JAWS simulates a left mouse click on the link or a pressing of the ENTER key on it; by default JAWS simulates a left mouse click, but FS recommends testing the other alternative in case the user has problems activating links in a website. Thank you, Are you talking about the Jaws passthrough key after the insert-Z, or instead of insert-Z. Appreciate your other thoughts as well and will pass them on. Some thoughts: First, Fernando, shouldn't Judy select the text and only then press control-z to turn off the virtual cursor, then alt-l or shift-alt-l? How about pressing the JAWS pass-through key, JAWS key+3 on the number row above the letters, before pressing either alt-l or shift-alt-l? I used to experience this same problem with WordPress. In that case, Jonathan Mosen suggested trying shift-alt-a. that key combination is probably specific to WordPress, but maybe not. WordPress solved this problem in the past year or so by enabling just about all formatting in Word, including links, to carry through to the WordPress website. Judy, you might ask this website's people if they're working on a similar solution. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Fernando Gregoire Sent: Tuesday, February 13, 2018 11:14 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Using a web site provided text formatter. When composing the original document in Word, after copy-pasting that Word doc with all its attributes, such as bold, italics, hyperlinks, etc. those attributes do not transfer over in to the site's text field. To solve this, the site has provided links for adding those attributes back in above the text box/edit field for the text body. However, I am unable to get those to work, don't know how to access them without getting out of the text field. For instance, when wanting to attach a hyperlink to the words Outdoor Fun, doing the traditional control-K in Word actually opens a new Textbroker page. However, I am asking if there is a way to actually use the link for hyperlink provided by Textbroker. You are supposed to be able to highlight your text, then go up to the link to activate the hyperlink in the document, but does not work, since I am out of the edit field. The formatter link even gives ashort cut key of Alt-L, which I have tried, but does not work either. Note that the control-B does work for Bold, and I believe the control-U key will work too. [JAWS-Users] application control
Hi, all, I have recently joined a new grocery delivery service and today when I went on there to try to order something for the first time every single item it read it would say "application control" before it said it. Hello Judy, If you actually mean a header then the following doesn't apply. I am thinking you likely mean that you want to make the first sentence of a paragraph a heading. The following applies in Word: You can select a sentence by pressing function key 8 three times. If using a mouse in Word you can hold down CTRL and do a single left click on a word to select the entire sentence. You can use a Word built-in heading style or one you have created. To use heading 1 style use Alt with CTRL and 1. This makes the selection a heading 1 style having a 16-point size of the Calibri Lite font and the font color is blue. If you use CTRL with Alt and 2 you get a heading 2 style, which is the same font and font color but the size is 13 point. Using CTRL with Alt and 3 will use a heading 3 style, which is the same font but size 12 point. If by chance you mean you want the first line of a paragraph to be a heading then just select the line by moving focus on to it and using shift key with down arrow to select it. You can then use shortcut keys for the appropriate heading. There are of course many styles to choose from but the first three levels of headings are quite often used in Word documents. If you actually mean you want to create a header where text goes above the document in the empty white space of the top margin then of course steps are different. Take care. Using a phrase like "click here" is contrary to best practices for accessibility which state that link text should give details as to the specific content of the link. So, for instance, if you wanted the user to click a link to find out more information about pet food, you might have the link as "More information about pet food". This way, a JAWS user who might use the JAWS list of links feature to find your link would know exactly what the link pertains to without having to find it in the document to read thesurrounding text. Text that is underlined is more noticeable which can assist people in determining the important parts of a document, or to quickly scan for a link to click on. 2. It serves as a tool to inform users that what they see is not just text that is colored differently, but actually a link. I suggest that you don't tab through the dialog box using the PC cursor as things can get messed up. After typing in the web address route JAWS to PC. With JAWS cursor active do a page up. Arrow down once to the line with "link to" and "text to display. Press home key and then use JAWS key with right arrow key until you find the address just past the words "text to display." Simulate a left mouse button click to bring focus there. Put on PC cursor, select the text in the field and overwrite the text with the words you want used. Route JAWS to PC again, do a page down and find the OK button. Do a simulated left mouse button click on the OK button. You should be able to test it. If your document is saved move on to the line with the link, use application key and choose to open hyperlink. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Virus Warning
I think the scariest I have seen is when someone calls you posing as a representative of your bank. They are very cordial, friendly, and talk to you regarding your account, they ask you to confirm the information they already have. In the course of the conversation, they say the only thing they need is the CVV code on your card. Bingo. You give it, and they promptly empty your account. I never respond to anything like that but make a direct call, myself. This is what they do now. I tried to go to a blog I frequent the other day, and typed the url in wrong by mistake (what? I'm old-school and still dial peoples' phone numbers too. :D). A mysterious electronic voice announced that my computer was sending out "virus reports" and that my credit card was compromised, or some bs like that. It's so bogus, but I've seen first-hand that it still scares people into calling the number, or downloading the software, etc. I used to get calls on my old landline claiming to be from "windows technical department", too, asserting that my computer was sending out "virus" and "error" signals. I've looked into this scam and it operates exactly as described in a previous message here. Actually first they make you look at event viewer and a bunch of other stuff in Windows and convince you there are problems. Next step: download Team Viewer, so a "technician" can remotely operate your machine. Next step: straight to PayPal. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Judy Jones Sent: February 1, 2018 11:27 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Virus Warning I would get a second opinion on that. [JAWS-Users] Clicking on hyperlink in Outlook.
Hello to all, When clicking on a hyperlink in an e-mail that should launch the browser, I am taken to the info bar with a fishing message. My only option is to hit OK. When I had Windows 7, I used to right-click and find the option to open the hyperlink, but not sure what to do in Windows 10. Thanks very much. HI Judy. Ah, no. qRead is for reading exclusively and you cannot edit pdf files using this programme. If the files are text and not images that you need to OCR, your best bet is to use Adobe Acrobat or Reader, I think. PDF forms do, I think, need some kind of adjustment from the developer of these forms in order to be accessible. I'm not too clear on what that is. I do know that most of the forms at my old work and also government-type forms work ok. I haven't had a lot of experience with this, honestly. As for file associations and such In Windows 10, use the search box and type "default". Or, you can find it inside "system settings". Here you can choose what programme opens each type of file that your OS recognises. Or most of them, at least. I have Adobe Acrobat Pro on this computer, so I don't know if it's quite the same -- but I saw this in Reader as well. There is a checkbox in preferences -- in mine it is under "internet" in the tree view. The box is labeled "open PDF in browser" or something like that. But yes, I was just wondering about this. I understand that there often *is* "clickable" text on a webpage, and JAWS is trying to inform me of this fact. But on many pages, every line will say "clickable", even though there is nothing to click/nothing happens when you click. Why is this? And can I get a happy medium somewhere? Obviously I don't want to miss important information about a page, but when I'm reading a wikipedia article or IMDB review or something and hear "clickable, clickable, clickable", on what appears to be static text - that just seems like weird, excessive noise. Re: [JAWS-Users] Where do I locate WordPad
Hi, I have Windows 7. the word pad is located in the Accessories folder. I go to my desktop, press the windows key and then hit enter on the "all programs" and hit "a" till it comes to Accessories and then arrow right to open it and arrow down until you reach word pad. You can then make a shortcut for it if you like. I'm using windows 10, but mine is at: C:\Program Files\windows nt\accessories The path should automatically be reachable from your run dialog box. So hit windos-key+r, then type "wordpad". Not 100% sure how the search box works in Windows 7, but if you search your c drive for wordpad.exe, and then use "open file location" from the context menu on that result, you will be able to see the full path. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Arianna Calesso Sent: January 5, 2018 7:35 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Where do I locate WordPad I'm using Windows 7 and JAWS 18 and for the life of me I can't find WordPad.
