[JAWS-Users] Skype Scripts Always Coming Up

2009-08-07 Thread Victor
Hi Folks,

Using Jaws 10 and XP Pro, when my computer boots up, Jaws will say, welcome to
Skype, and then proceed to give the opening message when opening Skype.

I have set it to not open when the computer boots up, but Jaws still states the
opening message as written in the scripts.

I have confirmed that Skype is not running, and yet the message pops up.

Anyone know why this is, and how I can stop it?

Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista

2009-07-16 Thread Victor
Hi David,

I'm sorry, but this is rather unfair of you.

You cannot simply say that this is your opinion and not justify it by not
telling us why we shouldn't upgrade, I think it's just plain irresponsible,
but that's just my opinion. Smile.

In any case, seeing as how you're the owner of this list and it's sister
website and accompanying list, Blind Computing, your opinion holds quite a
bit of weight on this and the other list, so I think I, and many of others
on this list would like to know why the owner of the Jaws users list is
vehemently opposing the upgrade to Windows Vista.

Re: [JAWS-Users] application key

2009-07-15 Thread Victor
Hi Ann,

It sounds like you locked one of the mouse buttons, in which case, all you
have to do is hold down the insert key, then tap the * or / key to undo the
one you did.

Pressing insert plus those keys locks the mouse buttons in case you need to
drag something from one place to another.

You can toggle it on or off by using the same command, insert+one of those
keys.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Calculator

2009-06-29 Thread Victor
Hi Darren,

I don't believe you're correct in that.

I believe the amount she would be able to get is around the 96000 to 9
dollar amount, based on my experience with real estate sales.

Keep in mind that this is assuming that her income, or, at least, the 1000
is only 33% of her net monthly income, or household income, otherwise no
normal bank will approve you.

One option you could go for is to check online with one of the major
commercial banks, as they will usually have a mortgage calculator on their
sites that are usually very Jaws friendly.

One place you might also try is HUD's website, as I believe they have a
mortgage calculator on their site, and it's accessible.

Another thing you may want to look for is HUD's programs for people with
disabilities, as they have tonnes of discounts and grants for people with
disabilities that you can apply for, and this will affect the amount of
mortgage you will pay every month, and lower the amount you will borrow
also.

Just something to look at to ease your burden.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Calculator

2009-06-29 Thread Victor
Hi Ann,

To be able to get, and see the posts you send to the lists you belong to
with Gmail, do the following:

Assuming you're using a standard e-mail client like Outlook Express or
Outlook, open up the tools menu, then arrow down to accounts and press
enter.

Once in the dialog box, highlight your Gmail account, and tab to the
properties button, and press the spacebar.

In the resulting dialog box, control+tab to the servers page, and tab down
to the e-mail address edit field.

In that field, type the word recent with a colon before your e-mail address.

So, if you're typing this information into your e-mail field, you would type
in:

recent:amedl...@gmail.com

Tab down to the apply button, then shift+tab back to the ok button and press
the spacebar.

You'll land back on the accounts dialog box, at which point, you tab to the
close button, then press the spacebar again.

The next time you send and receive your messages, you'll receive each and
every message you ever sent via Gmail, so be prepared to get a flood of
e-mails once you do this.

Let us know how you do.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Calculator

2009-06-29 Thread Victor
Hi Ann,

Sorry about that, I just had my terms mixed up.

It is in the account name that you have to put the word recent in.

You won't get any results if you put the word recent in the general page, it
has to go where you have your e-mail address on the servers tab.

Once you do that, it should start working for you.

Good luck to you too. Smiles.

Press insert+Z. Do it several times until Jaws states on for all

I don't know why this happens, but suffice it to say, this seems to happen
to me quite frequently.

Will have to write Jaws tech support about it.

I saw this solution on the list some months ago, and have been using it ever

in other words, someone did exactly what I just did, and didn't tell me what

Re: [JAWS-Users] dvd audio extractor

2009-06-22 Thread Victor
not take up a great deal
of resources when I do rip a DVD, and this could be because I've got ample
resources with which the program can use, or it could be that the program
doesn't need a lot of resources to run, in any case, try out the 100%
setting, and check your computer performance.

If you're not planning on doing anything while the computer is ripping the
DVD, leave it at 100%, as it won't hurt anything, and you'll get faster
results for ripping.

Tabbing on past the slider, you'll land on a combo box which lets you
specify what the program should do once it's completed the ripping of the
DVD.

The selections are as follows:

Do Nothing;
Close DVD Audio Extractor;
Log Me Off;
Shut Down the Computer;
Suspend the Computer;

Again, these are up to your preferences, and so you will need to set it at
your desired settings. I don't think I need to tell you that if you're
planning on ripping multiple DVD's, you will want the program to do nothing,
or, if you're only doing one DVD, you can set the program to shut off, or,
indeed, shut down the computer completely.

Once this setting is done, tab over to the Start button within the program,
not the Windows start button, and press the spacebar to start the ripping.

If you find that you've set something that you wish you could change, or you
wish to go back and change the bit rate or file type you want the file
ripped as, the back button is available at every screen, and it will allow
you to go back to each screen and change the appropriate setting you want
changed.

So, now you've finished ripping the DVD, and the tracks are listed as Title
1, 2, 3, etcetera in the folder you asked the program to rip the tracks to.
If you are going to rip another DVD, you should, as I mentioned above,
change the file names, or move the files to another location if you're going
to rip the second DVD to the same folder.

DVD Audio Extractor will not automatically go out onto the internet to
retrieve track listings or episode titles for you, although that may change
with future releases of the program, so you will have to change and name the
episodes yourself when the DVD ripping is complete.

as an example, I often get large numbers of DVD titles that I rip all at
once while I'm reading e-mail, and I have all my ripped DVD's to go into one
folder I call ripped DVD's, so when the DVD is finished ripping, I will go
to the ripped DVD's folder, highlight the newly created Title, and rename it
to what it's supposed to be. Make sure you keep the file's extension, or
what ever player you play the file in will get confused or something.

Now I'm ready to rip another DVD, or close the program.

If I'm ripping another DVD, I will tab to the restart button, and the
program will take me to the first screen to begin the process anew.

If I'm done ripping for the day, I will tab to the Exit button, and activate
it to close the program, or have the program do it automatically for you by
changing the appropriate item in the combo box above.

This is the end of the tutorial, so if anyone has any further questions,
feel free to ask, and I'll endeavour to help where necessary.

I should also note that if I have made an error in my explanation of the
program, or the explanation of the features and bit rates, file types or
anything else, let me know, and I'll revise this writing.

Hope This helps you better understand the program that is DVD Audio
Extractor.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Deleting addresses from auto-complete.

2009-06-19 Thread Victor
Hi Larry,

You can get at the Auto-Complete feature of all those applications by going
into your internet options, then control-Tabbing to the Content tab.

You can also delete Auto-Complete data by deleting your History on the
General tab when you press the appropriate button to delete the history.

Once there, tab to the button that is labelled as settings. If you browse
away from that dialog box, the actual name of the button will show up, as
Auto-Complete Settings. It could have been my Jaws, so I guess we'll see
with others and what their Jaws calls that button.

If Jaws just reads the button as Settings, you'll find two buttons there, so
you'll want the first button labelled settings.

Keep in mind that this is with Internet Explorer 8, but I believe the
process is the same for versions 6 and 7.

In any case, Once you press that settings button, a dialog box will pop up
asking what you want Auto-Complete to keep track of.

Uncheck the items you don't want Auto-Complete to keep track of.

Myself, I keep all of the checkboxes unchecked because I don't like any
information being kept.

After you go through the checkboxes, you'll come to a button to clear the
Auto-Complete data stored on your computer. Press the spacebar on that
button, and another dialog box will open up.

The trick in this dialog box is to keep the ones you want deleted unchecked,
and leave the ones you want left in checked.

I know, it's weird that way. Smiles.

Anyway, once done, tab to the ok button, and press the spacebar.

This should close out the dialog box and delete the information you've asked
it to delete.

On the previous dialog box, go ahead and press the ok button again, followed
by the ok button on the internet options dialog box.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] 3 in 1 printer, copier and scanner

2009-06-01 Thread Victor
Hi Joe,

I currently use a Brother MFC 685C, a multi-function printer, copier,
scanner, fax and PC fax, among other things, and find it works well with
Kurzweill, Open Book, and many other software packages I've tried it with,
in particular Microsoft's Document Scanner.

The thing I like about this printer is that it's not only a stand alone fax
machine, with a telephone handset, digital answering machine and stuff, but
it's got a large display, so it's great for high partials, and, it's both a
flatbed scanner, and a sheet feeder scanner, so you can use it as both.

I'm afraid that setting up various functions on it, such as the answering
machine, time and date, and various settings on it will require some sight,
as all of it is set through the large display, but other than that, it's
great once it is set up.

I've also found that Jaws does work well with the printer's control
software, however, if using the Jaws cursor, it does read you any warnings
of impending ink changes and the like, and paper jams, or out of paper
errors, things like that.

It's a four colour printer, black, magenta, cyan and I forget the fourth
colour, it is a wireless printer, meaning you don't have to use any USB
cables or network cables to print on it, although the printer is network
ready, meaning you can hook it up to a router and all computers on the
router will see the printer, providing you install the printer control
software on all of the computers, and has a USB and card reader built into
it so you can print photographs and images directly from a USB stick, SD
card, or your camera, assuming you've got pic pro, or some such software
like that. Oh yes, it's called pic bridge on your camera.

In any case, the LCD screen lets you edit and view the pictures on the media
and camera, and you decide which you want to print and which you don't, or
want to discard.

It really is a good printer for it's price, at only 150 dollars up here in
Canada.

I'm assuming the price is comparable there in the U.S.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] 3 in 1 printer, copier and scanner

2009-06-01 Thread Victor
Hi Mark,

This is simply not true.

One can use a multi-function printer on a system, after all, that's what
they're built for, computers and them being all in ones.

I would seriously doubt the person who gave you that advice.

In most cases, if not in all cases, the unit will perform what ever task you
ask it to perform.

Keep in mind this does not count any possible task you set it by pressing
any buttons on it, or by using it's software, but if you have a MFC
connected to your printer, and you ask it to print something, followed by a
scan of some kind, it should do so no problem.

Now that I think about it, it may be that you're referring to performing
tasks at the same time, to use my example above, printing something and
scanning it at the same instance, in which case, that person is right, this
cannot be done, however, this is not the failing of the computer, it is a
failing of the MFC, because the circuits simply don't have the capacity to
handle more than one job at the same time.

Hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] Internet Explorer Landmarks

2009-05-22 Thread Victor
Hi Folks,

Anyone have any idea what a land mark is on a web page?

I'm assuming it has something to do with it's navigation or some such, but a
site I've been accessing on a daily basis for the last year or so seems to have
screwed up to the point that I can't access it the way I used to.

For example, one of the data tables that house the message lists are not
displaying properly, and I can't click on some of the links, particularly in my
mail options page, which is important to me and how I view my mail.

Some of you may be familiar with this change as I have noticed it on Yahoo's
mail servers page.

Those with an A T T/SBC Global account may notice this type of change.

Can anyone tell me if this is related to Internet Explorer 8 or not, or whether
this is yahoo's fault, as I have noticed that they tend to make changes to
their website without our consultation.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] the questionmark does not speak like normal

2009-05-17 Thread Victor
I have also noticed that the apostrophe now is spoken as a graphic string of
characters, as opposed to it's proper name of apostrophe.

I also believe that Donny also had this problem way back when.

Not sure if he fixed the problem or not, but if he did, perhaps he'd like to
share the fix with the rest of us.

Or, if anyone else has a fix for this, I would appreciate the help, as I'm
sure others would as well.

I'm using the latest build of Jaws 10, with Windows XP home, and Internet
explorer 8, and it has been doing this since explorer 7, and, most notably
in send space files I've downloaded, where the file name has a particular
apostrophe in the name.

Now, as I think about it, it seems that I can arrow through the characters
that have replaced the apostrophe, and delete them one at a time, then add
in the apostrophe, and it then is spoken correctly.

Could this have anything to do with it?

Just thinking aloud here, thanks folks.

Thanks all.

Hi Sarah,

Yes, she could, and now that I think of it, I don't know why I didn't
recommend it to her in the first place.

Narrator works well with the system restore utility.

My only concern is that it might not be enough to simply restore the system.

I once did a similar mistake, and uninstalled Jaws, along with every other
component, and found that a system restore did not help me, as everything
had been restored, as in settings, but the program hadn't, and so I had to
completely re-install Jaws from scratch.

In any case, yes, a system restore is feasible, and almost completely
accessible with narrator.

Your issue with the control+alt+down arrow happens with me on occasion also,

I just get to a spot, and it won't go down any further.

On some occasions, if I try to go up, it won't go either, or left or right,
so I'm not sure what the problem is, as I have checked all my settings and
just attributed it to a bug with Jaws.

Just so you know that I am able to duplicate it on my system running Jaws

Hi Bill,

Open up your script manager with insert+F2, then the letter S, for the
script manager, and press enter to open it up.

Once open, press control+shift+D to open the default file for Jaws.

Once open, arrow down the page to the part where the script file starts
saying Use such and such.jsb and stuff like that.

Arrow down past that part to the word const.

Once you find that word, arrow up one space and type in the following lines:

Use skype.jsb
Use skypewatch.jsb

Make sure you type each line on it's own line, and please note the quotes
around the filenames.

enter once more to place an extra line space between the Use skypewatch.jsb
and the const line, then press control+S to re-compile the scripts.

This should be all you need, unless, of course, you haven't downloaded and
installed the Skype scripts, in which case, please do so before you make
this modification to your script file. Smile.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 10.0.1142 update was posted March 30th

2009-03-31 Thread Victor
Hi Eric,

AS a matter of fact, it wasn't the installer that gave me the most problems,
it was the fact that the default.jss script file wouldn't compile.

As a result, I attempted to re-install Jaws in order to create a fresh
install environment for Jaws on my system, however, as it were, things went
horribly wrong, although not at all because of Jaws, probably, and I suspect
this the most, because of user error, however, what caused the user error
was a result of the original Jaws problem. LOL.

I believe I wrote to the list requesting help for this problem, but I'm not
sure if you saw it at the time.

If you would like more detailed information, I can write you off list and
let you know what happened.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Hi Eric,

Not sure if you'll get this message, but did you guys resolve the issue of
the default.jss script file not being able to be compiled with the newest
update?

Just wondering as I don't want to go through what I went through the other
week with Jaws where I had to get one of your techs to send me a Windows
Installer clean up tool to uninstall Jaws.

Can you please shed some light on this?

Re: [JAWS-Users] alt f4

2009-03-27 Thread Victor
I have the same kind of problem, however, in my case, I am not able to
activate the system menu on any window.

When I press alt+the spacebar, I get the file menu and nothing else.

I have come to the conclusion that this is not Jaws related, and is Windows
related, but, for the life of me, I can't figure out why that is.

I am dying to root around in the registry, but I don't know enough about it
and it's idiosyncrasies to successfully negotiate all the parameters.

Hello Holger,

What key exactly are you pressing, and what does it do.

At first I thought you were referring to the F11 key, but when I did that,
nothing actually happened. Then I thought you might be referring to the
Print Screen key, but again, that also did nothing.

Is there a modifier key I have to press along with those two?

If not, could you elaborate as to what this keystroke does?

Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Messenger Script error

2009-03-25 Thread Victor
Hi Ming,

On some occasions, it is necessary to compile the scripts again,
particularly when Jaws is having less than desirable results to your
commands within a program.

If that ever happens, it sometimes helps to re-compile the scripts, as it
will sometimes go wrong somewhere along the way.

In any case, that could be one of the reasons, as that is why I felt the
need to re-compile the scripts for Jaws.

All of a sudden, My Instant Messaging windows weren't reading me the message
history with the alt+number keys, and it wasn't letting me know when the
other person was typing, nor produce the typing sound to let me know.

I have all of this turned on, and the window was maximized and everything.

I tried re-starting Jaws, and my computer, and still nothing, and, I could
not do anything else while I was chatting with someone, as I would
invariably have to use my Jaws cursor to read any messages that person might
have left while I browsed away from the messaging window, or tab five
hundred times to get to the history pane.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Messenger Script error

2009-03-25 Thread Victor
Hi Cliff,

You can re-compile the scripts by opening up the script manager with
insert+F2, and pressing the letter S for script manager and enter.

To compile the script for the file you're actually in, simply press
control+S to save and compile.

If you want to compile the default script file, then after the script
manager is open, press control+shift+D to open the default file, then press
control+S to save and compile the scripts.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Canadian income tax eFiling

2009-03-25 Thread Victor
Hi Everet,

I have had limited Success with QuickTax, however, there are instances where
I have had to use my Jaws cursor to get into the screens that I need to get
into to.

|For example, when using the Easy Step interview, the interview section of
the window tends to lose focus, and so I find myself having to constantly go
into Jaws cursor mode, then clicking on the easy interview process pane, at
which point, full accessibility is obtained again.

The other panes are accessible also, but in limited fashion, in that the
numeral entry boxes are after the various lines on the form, so you have to
literally count the number of form fields in order to place the numbers in
their proper boxes.

Since I don't use the regular forms portion of the program, and simply use
the easy step interface, I don't usually have to worry about that part so
much.

On Occasion, I've had some moderate unsuccessful problems with the T-slip
entry forms, but I believe they've fixed that as of version 2007, so
hopefully, they've continued that trend.

In any case, that's been my experience with Quick Tax, from 2000 to the
present, but keep in mind that as of 2002, is when I started using the
program as a blind individual, so you may find that others have better
success or know how to handle the various problems I've outlined above.

Anyone know what it means?

[JAWS-Users] How Do I Access Information Balloons?

2009-03-23 Thread Victor
Hi Folks,

I keep getting the information balloon that keeps telling me that messenger is
going to sit nicely in my system tray so I can be notified of various things I
probably don't really care about.

It also says click here to stop popping up this annoying message.

Well, how the heck do I do that?

I have checked the system tray for this information, but no dice.

I've tried to look through Jaws' help topics and have done a search through the
help indexes and all I've found is how to access them using a Braille display,
but nothing using a keyboard.

Can anyone help me with this annoying task?

Thank you all for letting me rant, and for, hopefully, giving me a solution to
this dilemma. Grins.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Superscript

2009-03-19 Thread Victor
Hi Donny,

It's saying it here also, but I think Jaws is reading it as a number 1, as
in a footnote character, not as an apostrophe.

Did you type the apostrophe at that spot? It seems like the character you
wanted to type isn't exactly what you got.

Re: [JAWS-Users] dvd audio extracter

2009-03-15 Thread Victor
 everyone else tells
you.

Myself, I have the bar at the very top as it does not take up a great deal
of resources when I do rip a DVD, and this could be because I've got ample
resources with which the program can use, or it could be that the program
doesn't need a lot of resources to run, in any case, try out the 100%
setting, and check your computer performance.

Do Nothing;
Close DVD Audio Extractor;
Log Me Off;
Shut Down the Computer;
Suspend the Computer;

Extractor.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Radio Buttons In Gold Wave

2009-03-13 Thread Victor
Hi Darren,

I use the Batch conversion utility quite frequently, and I can't seem to
find where it is that you're speaking of that you say is not accessible with
Jaws.

Every part of GoldWave, in particular, the batch conversion utility is
accessible with Jaws, and Jaws does move or check anything I ask it to.

Can you elaborate and be more specific and perhaps we can find a way to help
you, or, at the very least, see if this is something local, meaning,
happening only on your machine, or if this is something that needs to be
addressed with GoldWave and/or Jatendra.

Re: [JAWS-Users] quick question, is there is calculator program works well with Jaws?

2009-02-27 Thread Victor
Hi Jack,

Just for FYI purposes, one does not require the num pad to use the
calculator, as I can use it just fine with my laptop keyboard, without even
activating the num pad hotkey.

I simply use the various keys. Asterisk for multiplication, slash for
division, plus for addition, and dash/hyphen for minus.

Obviously, enter is the equals key.

One also uses the number row to enter the numbers.

You can also read the display like one would any other line with insert+up
arrow.

There are other keys one can use, but I'm sure you get the drift.

Re: [JAWS-Users] No Speech or Windows Sounds

2009-02-21 Thread Victor
Hi Patricia,

do you get windows sounds, and/or Narrator to come up when you activate it?

If you do, this may be a Jaws issue, and not necessarily a system volume
problem like that other person suggested.

If you aren't getting any sound of any kind, then it may be the volume is
set to low, or the mute is on, in which case, you may be able to do the
following:

press insert+F11 to bring up the system tray. You'll have to trust that
it's there and hope for the best. Smile.

Once you do this, press the letter V and it should take you straight to the
volume icon. This is assuming, of course, that the Volume icon is the only
icon there starting with the letter V. If you absolutely know that it is
not, then we may have a bit of trouble here.

Suffice it to say, I don't think it hurts to try this anyway.

Once you've pressed the letter V, tab twice to the left single click button
and press the spacebar. You may have to wait a few seconds, as the Master
Volume control may not pop up right away.

Doing this will bring up only the slider and mute button for the master
volume, so, after you've waited a couple of seconds, press the home key, and
this will raise your volume to 100%. If this still doesn't bring any sound
back to your computer, tab once and press the spacebar, as you will be on
the mute checkbox, and if it's checked, this will bring back the sound.

Once you've done all of this, and you still don't have any sound, I'm afraid
you have to start looking in a different place for your solution, possibly a
loos connection on the back of your computer, make sure the power button on
the speakers are turned on and the volume of the speakers are turned up
enough to hear it's sound, and also check to see if the power cord is
plugged in to the electrical outlet where you have it plugged in.

Other than that, you may have to get someone sighted to look at the sound
card properties in the device manager and see if there are any yellow marks
beside the sound card.

If there are, you may have to go in and check out it's settings and make
sure it's enabled.

Let us know how you do.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Skype question

2009-02-17 Thread Victor
Hi Kathy,

I am one of the people who use the Skype out service with a phone.

Although my phone is a VOIP phone, you can use it with a normal phone, but
you will have to get a USB to RJ11 adapter.

Basically, this adapter plugs into the USB port of your computer, and allows
you to plug in a regular phone into the jack on the other end.

I have it on good authority that if you get one of these adapters and plug a
regular phone into it, you can actually press the star key and hear Jaws
coming through the phone, thereby allowing you to scroll through your
contact list and stuff like that.

I can probably get you the model of that particular adapter and where you
can get it from if you want it, but I can't think of the model number
off-hand right now.

My actual VOIP phone is a model V-Tech phone with both internet and regular
phone line service.

It has the power adapter, and two line outs, that being for the USB cord and
the regular RJ11 cord. I can use the phone with Skype and with a regular
phone line when a call comes in.

It's really easy, and if you have Skype out service, you can simply dial the
telephone number that you're calling, without the area one at the beginning
of the number, in other words, you just input the ten digit phone number,
and press the internet button, and Skype dials automatically.

I paid a total of 110 Canadian for my phone, and you can actually three way
call a regular telephone call, with a Skype call, however, as the visual
display does not talk, I really can't use that feature.

The downside to this phone is the fact that if you keep the phone plugged in
when booting up your computer, for some strange reason, Jaws goes completely
silent, and I have to bring up NVDA to shut down Jaws, then restart it
again, at which point it comes back speaking. Very peculiar indeed. Grins.

The phone also comes with software that starts automatically when your
computer starts, so it's always running in the background.

Just to bring this back to Jaws, the software isn't all that accessible with
Jaws, however, all one really needs to do is install it, and get the status
information on whether the phone is plugged, the V-Tech software is running,
Skype is running, and the Sound is good.

Usually, you can glean this information using the Jaws cursor, or the
virtual cursor, so the software isn't a total loss. Smile.

You can probably get these types of phones or the adapters from Radio Shack,
The Source by Circuit City, or Best Buy. I also believe that Wal-Mart sells
these devices, on their website, but don't quote me on that.

If you'd like some more information on this or the Skype out service, feel
free to contact me off-list at:

victor.gouv...@rogers.com

Hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] Need to Make a Permanent Setting Change

2009-02-16 Thread Victor
Hi Folks,

I did manage to make the verbosity change about highlighting virtual text that
Flor put up, wherein she stated that I need to change the setting for
highlighted text under the virtual cursor, highlight to the virtual cursor.

Sorry, I can't remember the words exactly off-hand.

Suffice it to say, I need to make this setting permanent, as this is getting
frustrating to have to do it every time I go into Outlook Express or Internet
Explorer.

Does anyone know how to make this setting change permanent in Configuration
Manager.

I'm using Jaws 10, latest build.

Thanks for all your help.

2009-02-10 Thread Victor
Hi Jack,

I don't mess around with keystrokes in any other program, and besides, I
doubt I would mess around with that particular keystroke, especially since
it's one of the ones I most often use, as I use Notepad quite often to
create notes for myself, and will, on occasion, have to maximize the window
to hear the line I want to read.

And no folks, I have my word wrap checked, I just like it when it's all on
one line. Grins.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Maximizing a Window

2009-02-10 Thread Victor
Hi Folks,

Just to clarify things, I know perfectly well that this is a Windows
shortcut, so I humbly request that people stop telling me that. I think the
point of my message is that this keystroke is not working, not to find out
where the keystroke originated.

Whether it originated with Windows or Jaws, it will not activate my system
menu, and this is frustrating at the very least, and tortuous at the most.
Grins.

In any case, with all due respect to everyone, yes, it is a windows
keystroke, but unless you guys are trying to tell me this in order to show
me a way to fix it, I really can't do anything about it.

I'm actually thinking that it might conflict with another keystroke that is
new in Jaws 10 that I don't know about.

I am going to try using Jaws 9 and seeing if that version of Jaws allows me
to use the keystroke, in which case, if it does, I will let everyone know
and report back.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

Hi David,

It's in every window that allows for maximization and/or resizing.

Having said that, given everyone's feedback, it's looking more and more like
I am going to have to do a Jaws repair, or, at least, have a look at the
keystroke file for Jaws and the OS.

Hi Flor,

What does happen is that it takes me to the file menu, and no where else.

I have also confirmed that it also happens with Jaws 9, so I'm beginning to
think that, either a repair of Jaws is in order, or checking my Windows

Re: [JAWS-Users] Maximizing a Window

2009-02-10 Thread Victor
Hi Flor,

I am not using Vista, and I don't think I ever said I was, but having said
that, the only thing that I have done since this happened was install Jaws
10, and the only thing that I did that I don't usually do was use the
transfer settings wizard.

Other than that, that's it, so, by logical reasoning, it would seem that
somehow, the installation of Jaws has caused some kind of shortcut key
interference.

To answer some people's questions though, I did try shutting Jaws down and
trying to access the system menu with NVDA, and I wasn't successful with it
there either, nor was I successful in using Jaws 9, as I still have both
installed on my system.

Does anyone know of any hotkey utility that I can run on a Toshiba laptop
that is accessible and let me know what hotkeys are used on this laptop?

Any help would be appreciated.

[JAWS-Users] Maximizing a Window

2009-02-09 Thread Victor
Hi Folks,

In previous versions of Jaws, one could press alt+spacebar to get to the system
menu, where one could simply press the letter X to maximize the window.

That is no longer possible with version 10.

I'm assuming that FS has replaced this keystroke with another one, and so I'm
wondering what it is.

As of now, I'm forced to use my Jaws cursor to go to the top of the window and
click on the maximize button, which, needless to say, is a pain the royal
backside.

Is there a keystroke that will maximize the window or allow me to access the
system menu on a window in order to perform what I want to do?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Donald, I find this is happening with all of my programs, most notably
in Outlook Express, Internet Explorer and Firefox.

No matter what I do, alt+space will not bring up the system menu, no matter

At first, I thought this might be a Jaws issue, but, from the looks of
things, and what everyone has said thus far, it doesn't seem to be.

Anyone got any ideas?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Maximizing a Window

2009-02-09 Thread Victor
Even after a re-start, I am faced with the same thing.

The thing is, Donald, when I press the alt key, I get the standard file
menus, and can arrow through them all, however, if I go to the left, of the
file menu, or the right of the help menu, I just wrap around to the first
menu, when these actions should take me to the system menu, so, as you can
see, it's as if the menu isn't there, even though I can reach it with the
Jaws cursor.

Very perplexing indeed. Grins.

Re: [JAWS-Users] problem with my book external hard drive

2009-02-05 Thread Victor
Hi Jo,

It sounds as if you are in the drive.

System Volume Information is a hidden file that you don't see unless you
have show hidden files enabled in your folder options.

It is also the information that houses the computer's system recovery
information should you ever have to perform a system restore, found in the
start, programs, accessories, system tools, and finally, system restore.

Should you ever get to a point where you need to restore your computer and
it's setting to an earlier time before a problem happened, you would perform
a system restore, which would then retrieve the information from the system
volume information file to replace what is currently there.

This would not show up unless you were physically in the drive to begin
with.

If you'd like, When you see this file, press your backspace key, and I think
you'll find that you have landed in the My Computer window of your computer,
and that the drive is there.

Especially if this window comes up right after the format, which is what
will sometimes happen after a format.

Either way, your computer would not let you access this information, ever,
unless you were in safe mode, and even then, you would have a hard time
accessing it.

Another file of this type is a file/folder you can sometimes find on your
external drives with the name of Recycler. This folder will not actually
appear unless you delete something from this drive, at which point, it is
the folder that houses your recycle bin contents, at which point, you can
retrieve it from this folder instead of the recycle bin.

This folder, like System Volume Information doesn't appear unless you have
your folder options to display hidden files and folders.

If you want some other information on this, feel free to contact me off list
at:

victor.gouv...@rogers.com

Or, if you'd like, you can add me to your Skype contact list, if you have
Skype, with my Skype name of scorpio110570, and we can see what's going on
then.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Getting Answers

2009-02-04 Thread Victor
Hi Jack,

I think I should point out one error in your theory.

In that, like you, I too find Google to be a valuable resource, but not when
it comes to learning how to do things for the blind.

A good example of this is the ability to activate a hyperlink in a word
document. The program says to use the keystroke of control+enter to
activate the link, yet when I do that, it does nothing.

I also think that some of the ways to do the things most people do on the
net, don't necessarily have the blind in mind when they do this.

A friend of mine in England is studying computers, and one of the computer
courses she's taking has to do with word. One of the tasks she had to do
with Word the other day was create a mail merge data and form letter.

Well, she had a perfectly Brailed text book in front of her, yet it told her
to click on this button, or that button, and never gave any keystrokes.

I mean, granted, one can access the buttons on the toolbar by pressing the
alt key, followed by the control+tab key to cycle through the available
toolbars, but the darn thing just wouldn't say that.

It was left up to the blind student's devices to get to the toolbar, until I
taught her the keystroke for accessing the toolbar without needing to right
click on the icons. Grins.

In any case, I just wanted to point out that, in most cases, Google is a
great resource, but only when not dealing with computer information for the
blind. Grins.

Re: [JAWS-Users] I know it's simple for you all, but report success and thank you again

2009-02-04 Thread Victor
Hi KB,

To alphabetize your Favourites menu, go into internet explorer, press alt+A
to go to your favourites menu, then press your applications key, usually the
first key to the left of the right control key, and arrow up to sort.

Sort has a sub-menu, so press the right arrow to activate the sub-menu, and
arrow up or down to name and press enter.

This will alphabetize your favourites right from the menu itself.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Getting Answers

2009-02-04 Thread Victor
Hi Jack,

I agree with you on that score.

The only thing is that I always include the word blind at the end of the
string, or the word shortcut, which usually invariably always leads me to
get the keyboard shortcut for that specific function, and, nine times out of
ten, the hits usually tend to come from a blindness source, as opposed to a
generalized source that will sometimes not help because that keyboards
shortcut has been disabled by Jaws' own keyboard assignment.

In any case, that's how I do it, so a difference of practicality will
sometimes work for some, and not work for others. Grins.

Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] Getting rid of greater signs in a message

2009-02-03 Thread Victor

Hi Alan,

Another much faster way of doing this is to paste the message into a WordPad
document, which opens a lot faster than Microsoft Word, and doing the same
thing of finding and replacing the greater symbols and leaving the
replacement field blank.

Tab to the replace all button and press the spacebar.

This also does it a lot faster than word.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] problem with my book external hard drive

2009-02-03 Thread Victor
Hi Joe,

Just to add to what Jack is saying, I've noticed that some external drives
are formatted incorrectly as FAT32, when they should be formatted as NTFS.

When your friend formats the drive, make sure he specifies NTFS and not
FAT32, otherwise he may find the drive crashing at some point.

Oh, and for the first time you format it, I would do a complete format, not
a quick format, as that will only erase what is on the drive.

True, it will take you longer to accomplish the format, but it's always
safer to be thorough, than not being thorough enough.

Re: [JAWS-Users] NVDA JAWS Conflicts

2009-01-30 Thread Victor

Hi Cher,

Believe me, it was quite by accident.

Back when I was first a novice user of Jaws, I was still trying to get the
hang of it, and decided that should I lose speech for any reason, I should
create a shortcut keystroke to launch it, just in case, and so when to use
the alt+enter keystroke to bring up the properties.

Either, because I hadn't had my coffee then, or my brain was just fast
asleep after my body had woken up, I hit the enter key by itself, and got
mystified when the Jaws menu popped up instead of the properties dialog box.

I couldn't remember what I had done, so I just left it alone at that time,
and attributed it to some fluke bug on my system.

A few weeks later, I decided to change the keystroke for launching Jaws, and
had to go into the properties dialog box, and again, I mistakenly hit just
the enter key, and again it brought up the Jaws menu.

This time, in contravention to my errant keystroke mistake, my brain was
awake enough to log what I had pressed to get the Jaws menu, and I realized
that I had just hit the enter key on the Jaws menu.

Looking back, I find that a great deal of my experiences with Jaws have been
one hit wonders, so to speak, meaning I just happen upon the various
keystrokes or experiences by sheer luck, and then remember them after doing
them several times.

A great example of this is my experience with the GoldWave batch conversion
utility, and how I discovered that.

I was converting a file from WMA format to MP3, when I decided to add an
effect to the file that I hadn't done with the other files I had converted.
Keep in mind that up until now, I was simply opening the files I wanted to
convert, one by one, and converting them this way, leaving me little time to
do anything else.

So, when I went into the menus to look for the effect I wanted to access and
add, I ended up pressing alt+F and went to the file menu. I didn't realize
until I had gone through the majority of the file menu, that I was in the
wrong menu, but not until after I noticed the word batch in the file menu.

Well, I just had to go into that, and was surprised when I found out that I
could convert multiple files at once, while leaving me free to do other
things on the computer.

Even more surprised was I to learn that I could add effects and the like to
the files I wanted to convert.

So, as you can see, a great deal of my learning is done by accident, and
while those accidents have had a few minor bad experiences, the majority of
them were good experiences.

I can only wish my experiences on others. The good ones, not the bad ones.
LOL.

Re: [JAWS-Users] NVDA JAWS Conflicts

2009-01-29 Thread Victor

I think there are two ways you could turn Jaws off when accessing NVDA.

The first, as has already been suggested, is to turn Jaws off with insert+F4
before you turn NVDA on, at which point, you no longer need to worry about
the insert key not working.

The second way, if you've already got NVDA running, is to go to your
desktop, press the letter J to get to the Jaws icon, then pressing enter to
get the Jaws menu, then arrowing up to exit, at which point you can simply
press enter to turn Jaws off.

At this point, you can use your shortcut key to re-start Jaws, and the
insert key will again be enabled.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] NVDA JAWS Conflicts

2009-01-29 Thread Victor

Hi Don,

I too was wierded out by the fact that it disabled my numpad insert key,
then to discover that my insert commands for bringing up the system tray
didn't work, well, needless to say, like you, I had to be creative in how I
dumped Jaws also. Grins.

Suffice it to say, I remember that hitting enter on the Jaws icon on the
desktop brought on the Jaws menu, which would then allow me to exit Jaws was
a profound relief.

I was also relieve to find out that once you bring Jaws back, if NVDA is
started first, followed by Jaws, the insert function comes back and can be
used for Jaws again.

Like I said Quite the relief.

There are times when the equalizer mode turns off, and you have to toggle it

Hello Chris,

While the price can't be argued with, 7Zip does have it's limitations, such

7Zip will not handle them at all.

In fact, it won't even attempt to.

If there is a way to make 7Zip handle multi-part archives, I would be happy

Re: [JAWS-Users] caps lock key allert

2009-01-18 Thread Victor

Hello Hakala,

If you are using Word 2003, the auto correct function should compensate for
that.

For example, when ever I make that mistake, and find out about it, I will
often go back to the text I've just typed out, and find that it's been
corrected for me, so I don't have to type it again.

You can find this in the Options dialog box, I believe, under the spellcheck
tab, but it may also be under the autocorrect feature found in the edit
menu.

Either way, you should not have to worry too much about this problem using
Word 2003.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS making some crackling sounds

2009-01-17 Thread Victor
Wasn't there something about making sure that the wave something or other
was used, and that the number associated with the setting had to be set
properly?

I seem to remember that would fix the problem of the crackling sound.

The way I see it, downloading the drivers for something other than the SB
sound cards or Gateway computers would have an adverse affect on one's
computer, if they are not running this specific hardware technology.

Also, I noticed that the bulletin mentioned that after installing the
drivers for option two, involving Gateway drivers, it would switch your
audio from digital to analog.

Is this advisable, considering many of us use Winamp and other software to
play digital files?

Just wondering as I too have had issues where Jaws has crackled once in a
while, but it wasn't frequent enough to warrant complaining about it.

Any ideas Rick?

Hi Dale, while the title of the page reads, both in English and French, the
rest of the page does not.

However, I did find that the page did say something funny while scrolling
down it.

It kept saying something like catalin.

I don't think this is the way Jaws spelled it, but that's what it kept on
saying.

In any case, I was able to enter on the office supplies link with no
trouble.

If you want the link, I've pasted it below:

https://ssl.staples.ca/ENG/Zone/zone_postal.asp

I should note that I have my Jaws language detection preferences turned off,
so this might have something to do with your problem.

To turn off language detection, press insert+V and arrow down to the text
options, where it says Language detection on or off.

If on, press the spacebar to turn it off.

If it says that it's off, then tab to the close button and press the
spacebar to leave that dialog box.

Mind you, if this option is turned off, then you've got another problem
other than language detection.

Re: [JAWS-Users] One Version of Jaws Starting, but Not The Other

2008-12-28 Thread Victor
Hi, Thanks for your input, but have now tried both the CD version, and the
latest build download from the FS website.

I'm really at a quandary as to why this is happening.

I also tried to disable my anti-virus protection, but still, to no avail.

On the upside, I did manage to get the entire text of the dialog box.

It mentions that the application file for Jaws has failed, and that the
program needs to close.

It doesn't give me an option to send an error report, even though I've got
this turned on, nor does it offer me any reason for it.

It only gives me an ok button, which closes the dialog box.

Quite frustrated.

Again, thanks for your input.

Hi Leonard,

Which, if any, programs have you used to scan for spyware.

You should scan your computer with, at least, two or three spyware scanners.

I would also do a detailed scan for a virus, with what ever you have on your

I would also do a registry scan for any possible conflicts you may have.

[JAWS-Users] Placing Cue Points in Gold Wave

2008-12-22 Thread Victor
Hi Folks,

I'm using Goldwave 5.25, latest build of the scripts, and a laptop running
Windows XP SP3 and Jaws 9, latest build.

Can anyone tell me how to place cue points into a long file.

I have a four hundred minute audio file in MP3 that I need to split up into
smaller tracks.

I believe I can do this by adding cue points along the file, then going to the
split utility within the cue points sub-menu, however, I can't seem to be able
to place cue points where I want to split the file.

It's almost like the file, as I listen to it, isn't following what I listen to.

If you're not interested in this part, where I detail what I do, then please
delete the message at this point. Grins.

I basically open the file, then increase the zoom to about 33 minutes.

I arrow to the left, which takes me to about 33 minutes into the track.

I then attempt to place a cue point at that spot using the control+Q
keysttroke, but nothing happens, or, at least Jaws doesn't say anything.

I don't want to use the edit cue points feature because I have no idea where I
want to place the cue points in until I've listened to the part of the track
that I' placing the points in.

In other words, I don't want to split up a word in the middle of saying it.

So, then, after I've placed that first cue point, I will then right arrow
again, which takes me to about 66 minutes into the track, and again, I use the

Re: [JAWS-Users] Freedom Scientific

2008-12-20 Thread Victor

Hi Rick,

I debated writing you off-list on this, but thought that others might want
to chime in on this also.

You stated in your moderator's message that Eric and other representatives
of Jaws join this list and others like it to get a feel for how their
products are being received.

I don't mind that, as I know several lists that have that going on also, but
the fact is, how can they get an accurate response to how their products are
doing out there if we're only going to discuss the program's positive notes.

That would be like a company offering a feedback or opinions forum to their
website, then editing the content so that only positive opinions were
displayed.

The fact is, we were not debating FS company policy, we were offering our
opinion on the 64 bit version of Jaws, and it's lack of support for XP.

Should we all simply comment to the effect that yippee, let's all go out and
convert from XP to Vista, because that's where Jaws is heading?

Should we all simply forego all our computers in favour of a new computer
that will handle Vista, simply because we want to take advantage of the 64
bit architecture, again, because Jaws will not support XP's version of the
64 bit architecture?

I'm sorry, but I cannot sit back and let Eric think that everyone on this
list approves of this move, as it kind of leaves those of us who prefer XP
out.

If we want to give Eric an accurate representation of how Jaws is being
received by it's users, one should not allow him to gauge that reception
from this list, but solely from the feedback forms on their site, and only
from those who wish to give their opinions of their products.

I'm not sure if this makes sense or not.

All I know is that we cannot just allow everyone to let Eric think that
everyone on the list approves of this, and I think this is the easiest way
of showing this, not having to take the extra step of going to their
website, finding the feedback form, filling it out and pressing the submit
button, or what ever it's labelled.

If Eric monitors this list for how we, as a community receive FS products,
or Jaws in particular, then let him get the whole picture, and not just the
positive picture with all the roses and flowers.

Again, this is only my opinion, and I apologize if this goes against some of
your philosophies on the list, but I feel this action of limiting our
feedback in one sense, while allowing certain other feedback a bit of an
oxymoron.

I would also submit, that if we discuss the 64 bit version of Jaws, isn't
that also like discussing FS policy also, since we are only speculating on
what the new version offers?

I don't know, it's still early and I haven't had my coffee. Smile.

Re: [JAWS-Users] December FS Cast is live, 64 - Bit Windows version of JAWS 10 announced

2008-12-19 Thread Victor

Hi Eric,

I think your logic is flawed here.

True, most people got 32 bit editions of Windows, but you have to admit, at
the time, they had no other choice, as Jaws didn't support 64 bit editions.

I had a great opportunity to purchase my last brand new computer last month
with a 64 bit edition of Windows, being run on a Quad core processor, but
couldn't get it, because Jaws didn't support that version of Windows, so
I've got a great quad core processor that is being unutilized specifically
because of that.

I can still purchase the 64 bit edition of Windows and enjoy that version,
if I so choose, but now you're saying that I can't, because FS is choosing
not to concentrate on that aspect, because everyone has bought the 32 bit
edition.

Personally, I think this is unfair, and kind of discriminates against those
who have sworn off Vista forever. Smile.

No offence. Grins.

Re: [JAWS-Users] December FS Cast is live, 64 - Bit Windows version of JAWS 10 announced

2008-12-19 Thread Victor

Hi Nimer,

As a Matter of fact, I can name you several places that can give you XP 64
bit edition, but that isn't the point.

Let's face it, most everyone is using XP, whether Microsoft decides to
continue support for it or not.

People will not make the move to Vista simply because Microsoft decides to
forego supporting it.

I know several people who still use 98, even though Microsoft doesn't
support it yet.

Granted, It makes better sense to go after the future market for a product,
but to completely forego the earlier market and just focusing on the new
market, would make a lot of people think twice before buying that next
version of Jaws.

At least, that's my take on it.

Yes, you don't have to completely support the XP edition with Jaws, but at
least put some support on there, for those die hard fans who prefer to use
it because of it's simplicity, and who don't have the time or inclination to
take on the new learning curve.

But again, just my opinion.

To get this information, you first need to enable the status bar.

To do this, in any folder view, go to the view menu with alt+V, then arrow
down to status bar and hit enter.

If you see a check mark there already, then that means you've already got it
activated, but either way, once you have it activated, press insert+page
down to here the status bar contents.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] probably a very simple answer cannot find

2008-12-06 Thread Victor

Hi Karen,

I think you should know that some combo boxes are created differently, in
the sense that the page will sometimes change with the selection highlighted
in the combo box, and will sometimes cause Jaws to go out of forms mode.

When you do the alt+down arrow command in a dialog box, it opens up the
dialog box, and let's you go through the options in the combo box without
the page changing, then, when you're ready or have made your selection, you
should close the combo box with alt+page up, and, if the combo box is as I
described, the page will change to reflect your choice in the box.

Re: [JAWS-Users] More MP-3 conversion

2008-12-02 Thread Victor

Hi Larry,

Have you confirmed that you are in the Winamp main window, or, at least, in
the Winamp playlist editor.

The reason being that if you are anywhere besides those two windows, the
left and right arrow keys won't do their function.

In fact, if you happen to be in the Winamp equalizer window, the left and
right arrow keys function as the balance control, with the left arrow
panning to the left and the right arrow panning to the right.

In any case, try cycling through the windows with control+tab, and making
sure you land on the main window, at that point, try the fast forward and
rewind command.

Hope this helps.

Oh, by the way, if your Winamp main window is in fact not opened, you can
open it with the keystroke of alt+W.

A faster way to check what windows are actually open with Winamp is to press
the keystroke of shift+Jaws key+W, and Jaws will list the open windows
Winamp currently has open during that session.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Source for WinMX Scripts?

Hi Dale,

I think the old JFW Lite site still has them.

The address is:

http://www.jfwlite.com

They should be under the programs page, so when you open the page and enter
on the programs page, open up the links list dialog box with insert+F7 and
press the letter W until you get to the Win MX link.

At that point, tab to the switch to link button and press the spacebar.

This is the easiest way I've found to navigate the site.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Winamp

2008-11-11 Thread Victor Gouveia
It's been my experience that if you enter into a folder where everything you
want to include in the playlist is in the folder, once you do a control+A to
select all, then tab over to the open button, all the tracks come into the
playlist in order.

If this is not the case, you need to tell us whether the tracks are
appearing in the playlist with numbers ahead of the title, or just the
titles are appearing.

In any case, there are two checkboxes that need to be checked or unchecked,
as I outline below.

1. Open Winamp.

2. Open the preferences with control+P.

3. arrow down to the playlist item in the tree view.

4, Tab to the checkbox that says, Show playlist item numbers in playlist
editor and make sure it's checked.

5. Tab further down to the checkbox that says, When loading multiple files,
sort files by name and make sure it's unchecked.

6. Tab to the close button and press the spacebar.

Let us know if this helps.

[JAWS-Users] No Speech on Start Up

2008-11-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Folks,

A most perplexing problem has plagued me of late, and I'm wondering if anyone
has any suggestions for it.

Using the latest build of Jaws 9, Windows XP, Norton Anti-Virus 2005 and
nothing else I can think of that would affect it, besides running it on a
Toshiba Laptop, when ever I start up, I get no speech with Jaws, and so I have
to start Narrator, shut down Jaws, then restart it again.

At that point, I get speech back with no problems after that.

I do have a persistent dialog box that pops up when Jaws starts telling me that
it could not load the Braille driver, and I have not been able to shut that
off, or stop it from coming up. I should note that this dialog box does not
pop up when the computer starts, only when I restart Jaws after the initial no
speech.

Can anyone offer a suggestion as to why this happens and what I can do to fix
it?

I have thought that the Braille driver is starting up when the computer boots
up, and therefore gives me no speech, defaulting to the non-existent Braille
display I once had hooked up to it, and so when I shut Jaws down and restart
it, it no longer can find that Braille driver, and so defaults back to the
speech?

Does this sound plausible, and if so, how can I fix this problem?

I would welcome any suggestions.

Thank you all for your help.

Thanks for your suggestion, but upon further inspection, I found that the

Funny thing is, I switched from automatic detection to manual detection, and

Having said that, the elimination of one problem did not solve the original

The keystroke for turning the volume up or down is the up arrow for turning

You can also use the hotkey of control+alt+slash to take the volume up to
100%, control+alt+period to take the volume up to 66%, control+alt+comma to
take the volume up to 33%, and finally, control+alt+M to bring the volume

[JAWS-Users] Completely Unfair Comment

2008-09-19 Thread Victor Gouveia
I'm sorry, but this comment was wholly unfair, and completely uncalled for.

Whether people choose to investigate the documentation or not before they
come to the list, that's neither here nor there.

If people checked out the documentation first then there would be no need
for a list such as this because people would have all the answers.

I think an apology is in order, and I don't think I'm wrong here.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 9 Question

2008-09-18 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Annette and Patricia,

I have also found this to be the case when I'm pasting something from the net
into a message.

One thing that helps me is to paste it into a plain text message, or, if you
have your messages set to compose in html, go to the format menu with alt+O,
then press the letter X for plain text.

This will remove all of the cells and stuff like that from the message.

Once that's done, highlight the entire body of the message, and copy it to the
clipboard.

Then, you can switch it back to Rich Text/html by again going to the format
menu with alt+O, and pressing R to switch back to rich text.

At this point, highlight the entire body of the message again, and paste what's
in the clipboard over what you've highlighted.

I see no other way of doing this, but truth be told, I haven't investigated the
issue much, as this way works well for me.

Oh, and Patricia, just to et you know, I'll be responding to your message you
sent me off-list later tonight, so please keep an eye out for it.

I'm sorry for the lateness of it, but I'll explain in my message off-list.

P.S.

I guess I must have Rick on my mind, as I kept typing his name in place of
Rich. LOL.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Skype

2008-09-08 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Mich,

Please see my earlier message regarding answering and hanging up a call that
I wrote for Dale.

Someone else has courteously posted the exact location of the hotkey
checkbox, so follow those instructions and see if that helps you.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Skype

2008-09-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Dale,

Have you enabled the shortcut keys in Skype's preferences?

You have to do this before you can use those hotkeys to answer and hang up a
call.

I'm assuming you have the scripts for Skype, as you mentioned going into the
keyboard manager to set that up, but just in case you didn't, you should.

Like I said, go into the preferences, and make sure the hotkey use is on. I
think it says something like use global hotkeys or something like that.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Skype

2008-09-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Dale,

The scripts add more functionality to the program, such as talking caller
I.D. when someone calls you, letting you know who has signed in and out, the
ability for you to use the instant messaging portion of the program, being
able to browse the different tabs of the program, and various other things
that you can do with Skype, but are too numerous to list here.

While you can use the scripts that come readily installed with Jaws, the
newer versions available from David's site do what I said above, and more,
but again, these are luxuries that can be left alone if you don't use those
particular features I've mentioned above.

However, whether you download the scripts or not, you still do have to
change that setting in the options/preferences to use global shortcut keys,
otherwise the alt-page up and page down won't work for you when you answer
and hang up a call, respectively.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Skype

2008-09-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Rick,

Not trying to be cheeky, but what if that swapping of personal information,
such as a Skype name, leads to getting assistance with Jaws, would it then
be on topic for the list?

This is a serious question, and not meant as a joke.

I would like to know that if someone is having problems with Jaws, and I
feel I can best help them with the spoken word then with the written one,
would it then be permissible to send the Skype name, which, by the way is
not personal information, in my humblest of opinions, at that juncture, or
would it still be off-limits for the list?

I'm also speaking of offering assistance to those wishing it. For example,
if I wrote that I was able to help people set up and install Winamp, and if
they wanted that explanation, they could visit the Jaws user's page, which
is what I usually tell people, on or off list, but is it permissible to say
that they can feel free to ring me over Skype, if they want the personal
assistance?

Again, I am not trying to be cheeky, as this scenario has happened on a
couple of the lists I help to run, and, in fact, one of my lists will
feature a Skype tutorial, on a conference call over Skype, on how to upload
and download files from web based file sharing sites like send space or You
Send It. In any case, the above example is to illustrate that I would like
some clarification here on this, and I think the list would also benefit
from this clarification.

Re: [JAWS-Users] external harddrive question

2008-08-31 Thread Victor Gouveia
Is it being picked up in the device manager?

You may want to go into the device manager and check under the USB
controllers if there's a mass storage device being picked up.

If that's the case, then you will want to uninstall all of the USB devices
listed there, restart your computer, and let Windows recreate the USB
devices plugged into the computer.

You haven't said whether you've tried plugging in the drive on another port,
so my fix above is in case you have tried plugging it into another port, and
you had the same results.

Like I said, this is the fix for a problem such as yours.

Also, you never mentioned whether you've managed to connect this device to
your computer in the past and whether it's been working fine at that point.

Let us know some more information and we'll try to help if possible.

Re: [JAWS-Users] external harddrive question

2008-08-31 Thread Victor Gouveia
If the drive came with driver CD's, and you are running Windows 98, which I
can't remember if you are or not, then you would plop in the CD, install the
software, then plug in the drive.

Knowing 98 the way I do, you'll no doubt have to restart your computer for
the changes to take effect.

If you're running XP, then, more than likely, the CD won't help you, but you
never know.

Most drives only come with driver CD's for Windows 98 computers, as those
are the only ones that will not recognize the drive.

Another thing I just thought about is if you're running 98, and the drive is
formatted as NTFS, then you won't get it to recognize the drive, no matter
what you do.

You may want to take the drive to someone else's computer to see if it gets
recognized there on the other computer, at least to rule out that the drive
is bad.

You might want to Google your problem, detailing the model and serial number
of your drive, if you have it, and the problem you're having, and see if you
can turn up anything that way.

If you'd like, let me know the model of your drive, and the size, as well as
what operating system you're using, and I'll run a cursory Google search for
the problem for you, and post my results.
