Herbert,

Here's the top of the preamble in a KOMA-Script report I revised a couple of
weeks ago:

%% LyX 2.3.6.1 created this file. For more info, see http://www.lyx.org/.
%% Do not edit unless you really know what you are doing.
\documentclass[twoside,headsepline=on, footsepline=on]{scrreprt}

\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage[letterpaper]{geometry}
\geometry{verbose,tmargin=4cm,bmargin=2cm,lmargin=2cm,headsep=1.5cm}
\pagestyle{plain}
\setcounter{secnumdepth}{3}
\setcounter{tocdepth}{3}
\setlength{\parskip}{\medskipamount}
\setlength{\parindent}{0pt}
\usepackage{array}
\usepackage{textcomp}
\usepackage{url}
\usepackage{pdfpages}
\usepackage{graphicx}

Why the new doc uses latin9 rather than utf8 is the issue.

These are what's in Documents -> Settings -> Preamble:

\date{}
\usepackage{mathpazo,amssymb}
\usepackage{graphicx,relsize}
\usepackage{scrlayer-scrpage}
\usepackage{xcolor,colortbl}
\definecolor{lightgray}{gray}{0.8}
\pagestyle{scrheadings}

Well, it's not in Documents -> Settings -> Preamble and I had no reason add

It was a wrong font encoding° LyX inserts
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}

which is completly nonsense if using lualatex. You'll get
unknown commands and no bibliography.

I don't use lualatex; only pdflatex. Somehow lyx inserted those two packages

Re: numeric bibliography reference, biblatex, ieee

2023-11-22 Thread Neal Becker
Thanks. 1st I found that if I choose biblatex natbib mode then numeric
does work. As you mentioned I also found I needed biblatex-ieee package
and select ieee option for bibliography.

Now it works, but as I found previously, the bibliography thus formatted
doesn't look like the ieee formatting produced by the old bibtex mode. The
older one produces entries that are more visually compact. Not sure if
using different font and/or size.

Joel,

No. I restored the unmodified copy from Tuesday's backup and added the

mergedate=compact.

That fixed the problem and I completely forgot about posting the fix on the

you can allow KOMAScript to use these old commands. However, changing
it to the correct LaTeX commands would make sense: \sc  -> \scshape

Do I make those changes in the .lyx file? Newer documents use the current

where to make these changes as they're not in the Document -> Settings ->

Re: two (or three) column bibliography

2023-04-27 Thread Eckhard Höffner

This is not a LyX problem.

LyX produces a tex-file that is stored (on my system) under
/tmp/lyx_tempdir.random/ and than runs latex (pdflatex lualatex ...),
makeindex, biber/biblatex on the tex file (several times, to get the
idx, lot ... files).

You can open the tex file and search \printbibliography[options], insert
\begin{multicols}{2} before and \end{multicols} after and than run
pdflatex or xelatex (whatever you choose) on the file.

With Debian,

1. Install kile.

2. Run pdflatex /lualatex /xelatex from LyX (depending on the format
chosen in the document settings) to produce a pdf

3.  open the tex file under /tmp/lyx_tempdir with kile

4. In kile, there is a drop down menue (next to "Wiederherstellen") --
choose pdflatex/lualatex/xelatex (whatever fits)

You get a new version of the pdf file in the same directory, can look at
the log file and so on.

With my system it works without any problems, as you have seen (you may
have to insert \cleardoublepage).

Thank you so much - that's it. Sometimes the easiest things are the
hardest... Maybe I was using plain LaTeX too much in the past to
anticipate that it can be also that easy (with that little code) ;-)

If you only want a main heading "Bibliography" in the toc, simply add

For the code you showed, you need to insert 5 Bib(la)TeX Bibliography
insets, and add the options you want for each \printbibliography to the
respective inset. This should work.

If it doesn't, please send a complete minimal example file of the
previous (working) way and your failing approach.

If that doesn't work, type  X   to quit.

So my question is: How do I get the Bibliography-section (also in the

I tried to search the archives, but couldn't find anything matching.

Re: biblatex: excluding shorthand entries from the main bibliography in LyX ?

2022-08-21 Thread Mathias Girel
Edit : I was wrong introducing things in the preamble
Inserting in Tex code, at the end of the doc, just before the "commented
off" biblatex box the following lines did the trick
---
\printshorthands
\defbibcheck{noshorthand}{\iffieldundef{shorthand}{}{\skipentry}}
\printbibliography[check=noshorthand]
---
I then have my list of shorthands, and the biblio minus the titles with
shorthands.
There might be some "cleaner" ways to do it, I'll appreciate any
suggestions!
Best regards

biblatex: excluding shorthand entries from the main bibliography in LyX ?

2022-08-21 Thread Mathias Girel
Dear LyX users
For a monograph, I have a long list of shorthands and wish to remove these
references from the main bibliography.

I have seen the following link, but it generates errors if I paste the
beginning of the code in the preamble, and the rest in ERT at the end of
the doc (including, but not limited to "! LaTeX Error: Missing
\begin{document}.")

https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/44372/biblatex-excluding-shorthand-entries-from-the-main-bibliography

Is there a simple way to remove the references with shorthands from the
main biblio in LyX?
If so, what would be your advice ?
I’m on OS X BigSur, LyX 2.3.6.2, Texlive 2022. The class is Memoir, I'm
using variants of verbose for Biblatex.
The whole doc compiles very well with just the \printshorthands in ERT
before the Biblatex box, but I wished to remove the duplicates.

With many thanks!

Bibliography Problem

2022-05-25 Thread Joseph Hesse

Hi,

I am writing a book with lyx and want a bibliography and the ability to
cite items in the text.

My references.bib file is correct.  In my master document it appears at
the end as "Biblatex Generated Bibliography" and in the pdf of the book
the bibliography appears the way I want, as numbered items, e.g., [5]
and sorted by author.

I want the citation to look something like "Smith [5]" where the
author's name appears in the citation.  I don't have a citation style
available  (Insert->Citation) that allows this, the best I can do is
just "[5]".  How can I get "Smith [5]"?

My latex preamble has \usepackage{biblatex}.  In
"Document->Settings->Bibliography" I have Style = Biblatex and Variant =
Author-number.  When I choose [#id] from the 3 citation styles available
I get an error when trying to produce a pdf.  The error message is
"Latex Error: Option clash for package biblatex".

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you for reading this.

2022-04-19 Thread Dr Eberhard W Lisse

What is also not helpful is to have a hardcoded bibliography in a
directory that does not exist on my computer and starting the name of
the bibliography with a space ' '.

The (Tufte (not LyX)) issue is amenable to Google.

This link

https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/587605/tufte-book-biblatex-error-biblatex-incompatible-with-natbib

basically says that nobib turns off natbib and if you don't have natbib
you need a replacement such as biblatex.

The correct LyX way of doing what you want is described in

https://lyx-users.lyx.narkive.com/V1WM48zp/correct-usage-of-nobibliography-in-lyx

which works in your example (after I loaded the required packages
manually, which I am now tossing again).

What Am I Doing Wrong … bibliography entries not being included

2022-04-18 Thread Trevor Jenkins
When I View my document ⌘-R pdflatex shouts that there are no citations! I have
added the relevant BibTeX file using Insert > List/TOC > Bib(la)Tex
Bibliography picking a local .bib file and then added a citation using Insert >
Citation followed by Adding a specific citation. (It appears in a sidenote
entry as I have tuftepaper as my document class.)

Pdflatex’s error message is

BibTeX error: I found no \citation commands---while reading file Statins.aux

It makes no difference what Citation Style I select when adding the citation. I
have had this working before (on a now dead machine) but cannot for the life me
work out what I am doing wrong.

Operating System: macOS 12.3.1 (Monterey)
Processor: M1
LyX version: 2.3.6.2
Python: 3.10.4 (freshly (re)installed)
Document class: tuftepaper
 with custom options:
justified,a4paper,sidenote=raggedright,marginnote=raggedright,nobib
 that latter because I want to suppress the final bibliography listing and
was fine in my previous not that it suppressed the bibliography

Regards, Trevor.

Neither nor. Something seems to have gone wrong on your side with the

The latter shouldn't be the case. How exactly did you try to change

I am sorry, but I do not understand this. First, I do:

> Document > Settings > Child Document from the master, include only
> the desired child and click "Maintain counters and references”.

And save it. But if I (immediately) check again the setting is back to “Include
all children”. When I view the master document, I get the whole document
correctly.

Suppose I want to edit the included Chapter 2. I can right click on it in the
master, to open the LyX version of the included file, and make changes. Now I
would like to view those changes, with proper references, citations, and
numbering. “View master document” gives an error. “Buffer-view pdf” does not
show the references, citations, and numbering.

Am I hoping for too much or am I doing something wrong?

master is printed as well, so it is advised to have a master that

I think you misunderstood the advice. You should put the bibliography
inset into the branch, not the citation reference. Also, if the child
is supposed to be compiled standalone, it needs to have the proper
bibliography settings as well (biblatex in your case). See attached
example.

Note that an alternative approach is to use Document > Settings > Child
Documents (from the master) and to include only the desired child for
the output (this also prints the master's content, though).

I have similar questions, but almost no experience with child documents.
Ideally I would like to be able to first compile the entire document, and then
edit and compile a child document, separately from the rest of the master
document, but still see citations and reference numbers as they will appear
when the entire document is compiled. Can LyX manage this? If not would this be
a reasonable enhancement request?

Compiling child document with bibliography

2022-02-13 Thread tush via lyx-users
I am writing a book where each chapter is typed in a child document. The book
contains citation from a bib file.

I am following the instructions here
(https://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/Multidoc#multipart-bib) and am pretty sure I created
my branch correctly.

I created a master file, inserted the bib database into it, created a branch,
created a child document, activated the branch in this child doc, and also
deativated the branch in the master doc.

However, I now compile the first chapter and it seems that no information
regarding the bib database is included in it. When I export this child document
to a tex file, nothing related to biblatex is in the preamble.

How can I print the cited work when compiling only this chapter?

A MWE is attached as a zip file.<>

When troubleshooting, I always texhash;reconfigure; and then do
whatever. The extra 90 seconds is well worth it, because a misleading
diagnostic test can cost hours. By doing it this way, I never need to
tax my brain wondering whether a texhash and/or reconfigure is
necessary.

My troubleshooting is usually done from a looping shellscript.

Herbert,

That's what I had done, too. Yet, I ran 'Reconfigure' and when I tried to
compile the document lyx pointed me to three errors in my .bib file.
Somehow, the authoryear citation at the beginning of three entries
disappeared. I replaced them, recompiled, and the problem is fixed:
bibliography is present and shown in the ToC.

Why it did not take when I changed the bibliography style I've no idea. But
the reconfigure forced lyx to show me there were errors in the .bib file.

Thanks for the help.

Stay well,

Because it is in the "label" (\cite key?) field whereas (I assume
without having seen a MWE) the others are elsewhere ("author" field for
example).

From

 https://bibdesk.sourceforge.io/manual/BibDeskHelp_2.html

 Citation Keys

 A cite key is a unique identifier for a given reference. BibTeX
 scans your document for occurrences of a cite command with a cite
 key embedded in it, and translates it into a properly formatted
 reference. Several patterns are common in choosing cite keys, from
 simple ones such as "lastnameYEAR" to more complicated abbreviations
 of journal names and author names. BibDesk will automatically
 generate cite keys for you (See section Citation Keys), or you can
 enter your own in the editor.

-->
 BibDesk takes a fairly strict interpretation of the valid characters
 for cite keys, and the characters " "@',\#}{~%" (including the space
 character) are never allowed, while you will be warned if you use
 one of "&$^" in a cite key.
<--

 Cite keys are essentially TeX commands, so you should avoid
 using underscores, for instance, if you ever need to print the
 actual cite key itself.

3. If you're correct then how does one enter an apostrophy in an author's
name so it's properly written in both citation and bibliography?

You keep pointing out the source of the problem so I assume you have the
solution to it. I'd greatly appreciate learning that solution.

el,

$ grep -c -e "O'" documents/jabrefdb.bib 10

There are 10 entries begining with "O'" and none has before been an
issue.

EL,

Before I escaped from academia and its politics all my published articles'
references were in author-year format. I've used that same format ever
since.

This bibliography issue is new since the pandemic; I've had no need to
prepare reports or other documents with references or bibliographies until
now.
