Re: Uninstalling Adobe Flash Player

2019-11-04 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Tim.

In reporting the problem to Apple Accessibility, I realize the problem
is more Adobe's than Apple's, but in case Apple can bring pressure on
Adobe, I thought it was worth voicing the concern.

Uninstalling Adobe Flash Player

2019-11-02 Thread Craig Werner
Greetings, everyone.

I am attempting to uninstall Adobe Flash Player on a MacBook Air
running os 10.14.6. I open the Utilities folder under Applications
and then open the Adobe Flash Player Uninstall Manager; but when I try
to install the necessary helper file, VoiceOver goes busy, and I am
unable to complete the uninstall process. I could download Clean My
Mac and uninstall the software via that tool, but I'd rather not do
so.

Thank you for all help.

Re: Deleting an Email Address that Autocompletes Incorrectly

2019-09-15 Thread Craig Werner
A question and many thanks.

Now that I know how to delete previous recipients from the Mac end, is
there a way to do this via an iPhone connected to the same Apple ID?
Deleting a contact is easy, but what about a previous recipient?

My thanks to everyone contributing to this thread. I don't recall the
previous recipients list garnering much discussion on this email list,
and mine certainly needs pruning since it contains 493 entries.

Re: Deleting an Email Address that Autocompletes Incorrectly

2019-09-14 Thread Craig Werner
Tim, thank you. Your suggestion worked in all but one case. I
deleted a search string containing characters of a particular address
I never want to auto-complete, and when I type the first characters
into the "to" field of a new message, the address still autocompletes.
I literally read every entry in the "Previous Recipients" window and
can't find the address which persists in autocompleting. Any other
place I should look, please?

Thank you.

Best,
Craig

I am using the standard Mac Mail client under os 10.14.6. When I

Re: How to Get TextEdit to Display "Documents" Folder when Opening

2019-07-28 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Anne.

I'll bet I got so accustomed to the way TextEdit behaved with iCloud Drive
on that I quite forgot how it behaved with this function disabled. Funny
how recent memories can take over and make one think it was ever so. I'm
now in tune with not seeing all the shared files, and all is well.

How to Get TextEdit to Display "Documents" Folder when Opening

2019-07-27 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, everyone.

When I first got my Mac, and even when I briefly experimented with
iCloud Drive, I could have sworn that when I opened TextEdit, it
displayed the files listed in the "Documents" folder. Of course, the
option to open a new document with "Command-N" was also visible.
Recently, I disabled iCloud Drive, and now, TextEdit opens directly in
an untitled document. In other words, the "Documents" folder contents
are not immediately displayed. An Apple Accessibility representative
told me TextEdit is not supposed to show all the documents on opening,
and he knows of no way to enable this behavior. I can certainly live
with the way it is behaving now, but can anyone shed light on this
question? It is as if TextEdit has forgotten the path to the folder
now that it has been restored to local, that is, non-iCloud Drive,
use.

Thank you.

Craig

Re: Question about Deleting Trash from a POP3 Mail Folder

2019-05-27 Thread Craig Werner
Ah yes, there's the button, big as life. Thank you. I was so sure
that the answer might lie in the "Mailbox Behaviors" tab of the Mail
settings that it did not occur to me to check the first tab in the
series. I have pressed the "remove now" button and then deleted all
of the messages in my Mac's "trash" folder. I have also set the
"delete" period from now on to one week. We'll see if the odd
behavior recurs.

Thank you, Tim.

2019-05-27 Thread Craig Werner
Thank you, Tim, for your reply.

I have only one active e mail account: the Verizon POP account I
mentioned. I can't find the "remove now" button you mentioned in the
Mail App's screen. If I look at the index of apps, select Mail, and
press "Command-I" for information, I'm not seeing this button. If I
open Apple Mail and go to the "Mailbox" menu, there is a menu setting
with a submenu called "Erase Deleted Items," but that's not the one
you mean, right?

Thanks.

Question about Deleting Trash from a POP3 Mail Folder

2019-05-27 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, everyone, and Happy Memorial Day to U.S. readers.

I use Apple Mail on a MacBook Air running Mojave 10.14.4. Under "Mail
Settings -> Accounts -> Mailbox Behaviors," I have set mail to be
deleted from the trash folder after one month. I recently went to the
bottom of my Trash index, something I rarely do, and found messages
much older than a month. Some even went back to 2018. An Apple
Accessibility rep told me this is a behavior controlled by my mail
provider, but I don't think so. In a POP account, shouldn't this
mailbox setting be honored on the Mac without server intervention?

Thanks for all help.

Increased "Busy" Incidents with Safari after OS Upgrade

2019-04-13 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, everyone.

After upgrading my mid-2015 MacBook Air from Yosemite OS X 10.10.5 to
Mojave 10.14.4 (I know, quite a jump), I am noticing an increase in
incidents where Safari goes busy with websites that have a good many
controls. There are many sites where this is not a problem, but on
longish booking forms, for instance, for hotels, the delays are
pretty vexing. I am wondering if the mere 4GB of memory I have is
right on the edge of comfort for Mojave. Has anyone notice this
increase, and does anyone have suggestions for combatting the problem?

Thank you for all help.

Re: Reading a PDF File by Word Using Preview

2019-02-28 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Jurgen, and thank you for your solution, which worked perfectly.
I'm embarrassed by my mistakes, but I'll include them here in case they
help others. I knew to interact with the paragraph in which the word I
wanted to copy occured, but I pressed Command plus right arrow instead of
VO plus right arrow to find the word, and I pressed Command-C to copy it
instead of VO-SHIFT plus C. This double error made the operation fail
miserably. I too often forget about the VO-SHIFT-C command. I'm rather
surprised that the Apple Accessability rep did not know this sequence
since, as you say, it is fairly simpler

Reading a PDF File by Word Using Preview

2019-02-27 Thread Craig Werner
Greetings, everyone.

I know there are multiple problems when using Preview to read Adobe
Acrobat files with VoiceOver, and I am not skilled at messing about
with these files. However, what I'm trying to do is so basic that I
feel there must be a way to accomplish my purpose.

Question: How do I read by word in an Adobe Acrobat file using
VoiceOver and then select that word for later pasting? Let's assume I
am on the first word of a file. How do I get to the second word and
have it read that word? Right arrow produces no sound. VO-right
arrow takes me to the next paragraph. Is this the best I can hope
for? In other words, I can read by paragraph using VO-right arrow
and even by lines (VO-down arrow gives me the next line); but I can't
read word by word. An Apple Accessibility rep advised me to get Adobe
Acrobat. Of course, I can do this and probably will.

I am using VoiceOver with macOS 10.14.3.

Thank you very much for all help.

Re: macOS 10.14.3: VoiceOver Loading Slowly after Entering Password

2019-02-27 Thread Craig Werner
Just to clarify, I did not do a clean install, just an upgrade after
backing up the machine. I do have applications that may perform some
loading and checking activities between the time I press the "login"
button and the time VoiceOver speaks. I have Dropbox and ClamXAV on
my system.

Here's the short summary of load times:

Time of boot-up before password is requested: about 15 seconds for
Yosemite and Mojave
Time between pressing "login" button and VoiceOver speaking: about 4
seconds for Yosemite; about 15 seconds for Mojave

I'm not very concerned about this situation. As the days go by, I
realize my MacBook Air is performing well under 10.14.3. I get no
more "Safari busy" notifications than I did when I ran Yosemite, and
although the Mail app takes perhaps a second longer to load under
Mojave than it did under Yosemite, the machine seems snappier when I
navigate from element to element.

Re: macOS 10.14.3: VoiceOver Loading Slowly after Entering Password

2019-02-25 Thread Craig Werner
Thank you, Tim, for your prompt reply.

Yes, I rather suspected the low storage capacity and slow processor
speed of my mid-2015 Mac. I performed the upgrade about two days ago,
and the machine has been awake for a reasonable amount of time; so
perhaps its indexing is complete. Had I upgraded gradually rather
than jumping from 10.10 to 10.14, the slow VoiceOver awake time might
not have been as noticeable to me. It's a small price to pay for an
updated operating system.

macOS 10.14.3: VoiceOver Loading Slowly after Entering Password

2019-02-25 Thread Craig Werner
Greetings to the list.

After a much overdo upgrade of my MacBook Air from OS X 10.10.5 to
macOS Mojave 10.14.3, VoiceOver takes quite a bit of time to load
after I type my Apple ID password. About fifteen seconds elapse
between my entering the "login" command and VoiceOver's speaking the
"Welcome to OS 10" message. With Yosemite, the time interval was
about four seconds. Is this a known issue with later macOS versions,
or is it due to the 4GB storage capacity of my machine?

Thank you for all help.

Re: Recommendations for Mac Antivirus Software

2019-02-22 Thread Craig Werner
My sincere thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. I appreciate
the recommendations for antivirus software for the Mac, but I also
appreciate hearing from those of you who feel such software is unnecessary.
My concern over the possible susceptibility of Macs to harmful invasions is
prompted by recent articles in leading tech journals that suggest that Macs
are becoming increasingly frequent targets, and that the notion that they
are immune from threats is, in some cases, at least, a misguided one. I am
not going to take issue with those on this forum with much more expertise
than I when they say they don’t run such software. I recognize that doing
so may in many cases be unnecessary and may even slow down machines.

I have decided to update my ClamXAV package and now have a subscription,
which is the only way one can continue to receive updates. There is also a
new version, 3, which seems to work quite well with VoiceOver.

Recommendations for Mac Antivirus Software

2019-02-19 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, everyone.

I have been using ClamXAV for my Mac antivirus protection. Since
ClamXAV has recently gone to a subscription-based pay plan and since
the product is not gaining the best reviews from the tech sites I
read, I wonder what list users recommend. I am looking for reliable
detection, thorough cleaning and quarantining, and solid VoiceOver
compatibility.

Thank you for all help.

Re: Playing BBC World Service Content on My Mac

2016-08-05 Thread Craig Werner
David and everyone, as I wrote a few days ago, the help file that
speaks of incompatibility with OS X VoiceOver is confusing. The
notation actually relates to the BBC Media Player, not, strictly
speaking, to the BBC iPlayer. I am confused because I am under the
impression that the Media Player is an Android app, so associations
with VoiceOver make no sense to me. At any rate, as I said a few days
ago, an update of the Adobe Flash Player allows me to listen to the
iPlayer Radio stream on my Mac running OS X 10.10.5. The link to the
BBC help file is

Re: Playing BBC World Service Content on My Mac

2016-08-02 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, David, and thank you for responding.

I updated my Adobe Flash Player, and the iPlayer is now working well.
Oddly enough, when I looked at the Accessibility section of iPlayer
Help, I learned, if I read the help file correctly, that Safari wasn't
supported in OS X, but it is in iOS 9.x. The wording of the file's
text is a bit ambiguous, so I may be misreading its intent (if files
can be said to have intentions).

Re: Playing "The Golden Wombat of Destiny" on a Mac

2016-07-06 Thread Craig Werner
Thanks, Sabahattin, for your reply. I am not emulating Windows on my Mac,
and since I have a Windows machine, perhaps I will try the Golden Wombat
there. Playing a game is not high enough on my priorities list to make it
work on the Mac, but it's good to know the functionality may be there.

Playing "The Golden Wombat of Destiny" on a Mac

2016-06-29 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, everyone.

I am wondering if anyone on this list felt a flush of excitement when
reading the "Subject" field of this message. If anyone remembers the
adventure game for early computers called "The Golden Wombat of
Destiny," please let me know if it and other 1980s text games are
playable on the Mac.

Thank you.

Re: Deleting an Item from the Safari "Favorites" List

2016-05-27 Thread Craig Werner
I should have asked how I can delete a "Favorites" item using the
fewest keystrokes. The only way I have found to delete an item is to
open Safari, interact with the Sidebar, make sure the "Bookmarks"
radio button is selected, interact with the "Bookmarks" scroll area,
and interact with the "Bookmarks" table. I can then press "Delete"
after arrowing to the unwanted item. Surely, there must be a more
efficient way of doing this.

Thank you.

Re: Odd Navigation Results with Web Page under OS X 10.10.5

2015-12-29 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Sabahattin.

I have indeed reported the link to Apple Accessibility with full
particulars of the allegedly locked table. I pointed out that the
page is navigable with the Tab and other keys but that results
produced by pressing VO-left and VO-right arrow are disappointing and
anomalous. They may well tell me to upgrade to El Capitan and Safari
9.0.2, but still, it's worth reporting the problem.

Re: Odd Navigation Results with Web Page under OS X 10.10.5

2015-12-28 Thread Craig Werner
Thank you, Sabahattin, for your thoughtful reply. I checked and
unchecked the "Group items within" checkbox under the "VoiceOver
Utility -> Web -> Navigation -> Navigating Web Tables" item, and the
little table was still locked. That is, pressing "VO-left" and
"VO-right" produced no results. As I said, pressing the "Tab" key
gave access to all sorts of links and other form controls. I am going
to subscribe to your theory of the misbehaving table and hope that
when I upgrade to El Capitan, something I am reluctant to do right
now, that the problem will go away. I may try updating to the latest
version of Safari; I am currently running Version 8.0.8. I should add
something that you already probably have guessed: the page can be
easily navigated under iOS 9.2. I am easily resisting the temptation
to turn my Mac into a Windows machine to test this page because I am a
new user and because this page is the only one I have found that
behaves in this peculiar way.

Odd Navigation Results with Web Page under OS X 10.10.5

2015-12-27 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, everyone.

I am a fairly new MacBook user who has run into a web page whose
navigation looks odd to me. If I go to

http://www.amherst.ny.us

and press the VO-left and VO-right keys, I am told the only content of
the page is a table with one column and two rows. Attempts to
interact with this table produce no results. However, if I press the
"web summary" key (VO-Shift-I,") I note there is quite a bit of
content on the page in the forms of links, form controls, etc. If I
use the Tab key to look at links, the page suddenly comes to life.
What is causing this odd navigational behavior? How should I navigate
the page most efficiently?

Thank you.

Re: Alex for the Mac and Correctness of Pronunciation

2015-12-12 Thread Craig Werner
My point exactly. Alex has more than his share of pronunciation
eccentricities. However, after so many years of Eloquence use, I'm going to
give him a good try. Let's see how adaptive I can be in making the proper
auditory closures so that eventually, he won't seem so quirky.

Re: Alex for the Mac and Correctness of Pronunciation

2015-12-11 Thread Craig Werner
Thanks very much to all who have responded to my request for help.

Shaun and Alex, I typically run my Mac OS voices at around 50 percent.
Sometimes, the faults I perceive are accentuated if I run them at a
rate under 50%.

Nicolai, here are a couple of examples which demonstrate the kind of
behavior to which I am referring.

In the first example, note the pronunciation of the word "department."
It sounds to me as if the "e" is almost absent, and so is the final
"T."

Example 1: I hope to see you at future department gatherings.

In the second example, note the pronunciation of the word "regards."
It sounds to me as if the last two letters are "g s," not "d s." I
have typed it twice on two lines to allow the example to be listened
to line by line.

Example 2:
Regards,
Regards,

A couple of things you should know about my listening habits: First, I
am a Windows refugee and have spent over twenty years listening to and
appreciating the Eloquence voice for its clear pronunciation but
admittedly not for its grace or beauty. I have been listening to Alex
for about five months. Second, I feel much more comfortable with
Samantha, Karen, and Daniel, all voices available on my iPhone 5,
which I have owned for about three years.

Also, please remember that I am using OS X 10.10.5 and am wondering if
Alex sounds better with OS X 11.2. I had a brief flirtation with El
Capitan before deciding, as a very new user, to roll back to Yosemite,
so I don't have enough recall of what Alex sounded like with the new
version to make a comparison.

It appears that my concerns represent a minority viewpoint, but I'm
hoping something useful will come out of this thread anyway. Again,
all comments welcome.

Thank you.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness, Katie, in reviving this thread. I
don't know if this elusive bug, which seems only to have affected a
minority of users, ever made it to the top of Apple's bug list, but
I'm glad the bug has been squashed for you.

Re: Alex for the Mac and Correctness of Pronunciation

2015-12-11 Thread Craig Werner
Alex, you said something potentially helpful. Referring to my
perceived mispronunciation of the end of "regards," you wrote: "my
brain hears what it expects at the end of 'regards'. " It may well be
that I am not sufficiently tuned into Alex's accent to allow my brain
to make the proper closure. Eloquence and the iOS voices I mention
have similar inflections and word spacings; in other words, despite
differences in voice quality, their rhythms sound to me quite similar.
Alex, on the other hand, often glides from word to word. I'll give
myself more time with Alex and see how I manage.

I do know about the free downloadable Nuance voices for the Mac. I
have downloaded Tom and Samantha and find them easier to comprehend
than Alex. However, it seems to me that Alex's bandwidth is broader,
allowing for a more open, realistic sound as compared to the more
restricted, or pinched, tone of Samantha and Tom. Tom speaks at a
slightly lower volume as well. I hope I don't seem too compulsively
picky; I'm just making observations.

Alex for the Mac and Correctness of Pronunciation

2015-12-10 Thread Craig Werner
Hello,everyone.

As we all know, preference for one voice over another is a matter of
subjective interpretation. However, it strikes me that one criterion
is less subjective than the others: the ability of a synthesizer to
pronounce a word correctly in the dialect and language the user has
chosen. In this respect, it seems to me, Alex doesn't perform well.
I have noticed that even common words are too often mispronounced,
and, in Yosemite 10.10.5, at least, it is the short ones, such as
"to," "the," "into," "that," etc. that are often mispronounced or have
portions of them swallowed up. Whether these words are correctly
pronounced may depend on their position on a line and their
contiguity, or lack of it, with punctuation marks.

I'm wondering about two questions. First, is Alex's pronunciation
more correct under OS 10.11 than under 10.10? Second, are there other
voices that pronounce common words more accurately?

Thanks for all help.

Craig

Re: Quality of Nuance Voice Tom for the MacBook Air

2015-12-10 Thread Craig Werner
Yes, Chris, I'm now certain it's my imagination. After playing with Tom
for a few days, I went back to the sample offered in the VoiceOver Utility
that anyone can hear without downloading the voice, and the sample and
downloaded voices are pretty much the same. I notice that Tom, and perhaps
the other Nuance voices as well, have their default volumes set a bit lower
than that of Alex. I get the impression that more fine-tuning of Alex's
voice has taken place when compared to the tweaking of other voices.

Quality of Nuance Voice Tom for the MacBook Air

2015-12-06 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, everyone.

I am using a 13-inch MacBook Air running OS X 10.10.5. I recently
downloaded the Nuance voice Tom using the VoiceOver Utility function,
and I notice that the sample sentence spoken by Tom accessible without
downloading the voice sounds more natural than the downloaded voice.
"Natural" is, of course, difficult to define, but to my ears, the
sample voice sounds as if it occupies a greater frequency bandwidth.
Is this limitation on the quality of the downloaded voice connected to
the available memory of the MacBook Air? Is it a product of my
imagination? :-)

Thank you for all help.,

George and Mary, I have just demonstrated the validity of the old saying,
"we learn through our mistakes." One of the good things about this group is
that one may learn something when least expected to do so.

Re: Unable to Logon to a Web Site

2015-11-14 Thread Craig Werner
Thank you, Nicolai, for parsing the source code of the login page in
question and for suggesting a URL offering a logon without changing
Safari's efault cookies setting. I have run this problem by a good
friend with extensive Mac OS administrative experience, and he
confirms that this oddity happens from time to time. Like you, I
can't imagine what advantage is to be gained from drawing information
from a page in addition to the one the user has loaded. I may indeed
write to the developer, but I may not do so as an end user. I may ask
an instructor of mine, the person who has the license for the software
that schedules our classes, to forward my concern.

BTW, if one types the error message "Cookies are required to access
this site" into the Google search box, several references to this
developer's scheduling software come up. It's hard for me to believe
they don't know about the problem. It appears to be browser-specific
since logon proceeds normally when I use either Firefox or Internet
Explorer for Windows. I have not yet tried using the page under iOS.

Unable to Logon to a Web Site

2015-11-13 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, everyone.

I am using Safari on a MacBook Air running OS X 10.10.5. I am trying
to logon to a web site whose username and password fields are not
being spoken by VoiceOver. When I go to

http://www.coreconceptsclarence.com

and then activate the "My Account" link, the username and password
fields are not on screen. Under the "My Account" heading is a "Frame
0" notation, and when I interact with this frame, I can hear the text
telling me that "cookies are required to access this site." I have
not changed any Safari settings since installing Yosemite 10.10.5.
Can anyone imagine what is going on with this site? I have never
received a cookies-related message from Safari before. Then again, I
have only been a Mac user for a few months.

Thank you for all help.

Re: Unable to Logon to a Web Site

2015-11-13 Thread Craig Werner
Thanks so much for replying, Charlie.

You're on the right track. In fact, cookies must be enabled for all
sites in order for the CoreConceptsClarence.com page to work properly.
This makes no sense. The default setting for cookies, "allow for
websites I visit," should allow for the page to work. An Apple
Accessibility representative told me that occasionally, developers
code their pages in such a way as to necessitate Safari's acceptance
of cookies from all sites. This is a real bother since theoretically,
at least, the user is opening his/her computer to malware if that
setting is allowed to become the default. It looks like I have
stumbled across a rather rare find here.

Re: Help from fellow academics out there? Desperate!

2015-11-01 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Sarah.

I'm afraid I don't know of any software package that handles numerous
styles accessibly, but I can offer you a small dose of encouragement.
I had an academic career that ran from 1978-2011, and I hand-generated
citations and bibliographies as I went along without the benefit of
software, first on a manual typewriter, than on WordPerfect for DOS
and Word for Windows. I only had to deal with MLA, I admit.

Re: still no new message sound in Mail

2015-10-29 Thread Craig Werner
I was one of the first people to report this problem to the VoiceOver
community. All sound preferences were set properly, and no amount of mail
sound to tweaking restored the new mail sound. I reported the problem to
Apple and was told by a rep that he had run into the problem with some
users, but it is not on the list of El Capitan emerging issues. For this
and other reasons, I rolled back to Yosemite 10.10.5.

Re: still no new message sound in Mail

2015-10-25 Thread Craig Werner
I am convinced that this is indeed a bug for some people. There are several
threads of :
:
conversation on the web devoted to this subject, and some of the users
reporting the problem appear quite experienced. An App
Apple rep told me he has heard of the problem, but it is not on the list of
emerging problems for El Capitan.

From Yosemite to El Capitan and Back: One New User's Story

2015-10-22 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, everyone.

As a MacBook Air user of just under three months, I am posting a
little tale about my brief experience upgrading to El Capitan. I do
this for two reasons: to acquaint new users thinking of upgrading with
one rookie's experience and perhaps to generate a bit of commentary
from more experienced users.

As someone who has come up through the ranks of CP/M, MS-DOS, Windows,
and Apple iOS, I am no newcomer to the world of computers. In July, I
bought a MacBook Air, which came with Yosemite 10.10.3, which I
upgraded to 10.10.5 in early September. I love reading documentation,
so I threw myself happily into reading lots of VoiceOver and OS X
resources, including Tim Sniffen's and Janet Ingber's books, AppleVis
posts, and various podcasts, supplemented by generous chunks of David
Pogue's _Yosemite: the Missing Manual_. The learning curve was steep,
but I almost enjoyed my first few weeks. Troubled by some bugs,
notably in Mac Mail, I wondered if I should upgrade to El Capitan.
Years and years of caution prompted my inner voice to urge me to stay
put and be patient as I learned; but one day in October, I took the
plunge. Buoyed by my success at upgrading, I started to play with El
Capitan only to discover within a few minutes that not only were the
Mail bugs still present but also Safari often displayed a "busy"
status at times when performing the same operations in Yosemite
produced happier results.

I decided to return to Yosemite 10.10.5, so, urged on by an Apple
Accessibility rep who told me I could downgrade without a bootable
drive, I decided to use Internet Recovery to restore the OS that came
with the machine. Something went wrong during the attempt to
downgrade, and the Mac refused to acknowledge my router. A couple of
earnest attempts by Apple Accessibility personnel to help the machine
recover failed, and I decided to take the computer into the nearby
Apple Store for a clean install. The bottom line is that the machine
has been restored to its Day One state, so to speak, and I am quite
content to wallow in Yosemite for the time being.

My point is simple: if you're new to this game, consider carefully
whether the advantages you may gain when trying to upgrade are worth
the risk. Better to learn carefully what you don't know now than to
add more layers which you may not have bargained for.

Some of you might be wondering why you have bothered to read something
so self-evident. All I can say is temptation doesn't always yield
beneficial results. At the risk of stating the obvious, I have stated
the obvious.

Re: problem with mail sounds on my Mac

2015-10-21 Thread Craig Werner
Katie, I have been doing more web reading about this bug and have
discovered that some users are experiencing it on POP3 accounts but
not on IMAP accounts. Is your email set up for POP3 protocol? Mine
is, and before I rolled back to Yosemite, I didn't get an incoming
mail sound either.

Re: Mail sounds gone in El Capitan

2015-10-18 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Anne.

I'm glad some of your mail sounds have been restored. As long as
Apple acknowledgess the bug, there's hope.I know the lack
of an incoming mail sound is really no more than an annoyance, and I
admit I have assigned undue import to its remedy. I guess we all have
pet bugs, so to speak, that we worry about. For now, I'm back with
Yosemite. I'll try El Capitan after a couple of updates and when I
know more about my three-month-old machine.

Re: Mail sounds gone in El Capitan

2015-10-17 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Anne.

A day or two after the public release of El Capitan, another user and
I posted either on MacVisionaries or Peel-the-Apple that our incoming
mail sound disappeared after the upgrade from Yosemite to El Capitan.
In fact, I believe any sounds associated with the Mac Mail app
disappeared, in my case, at least. I made sure that sound effects
were still enabled, and I ran through all the different incoming mail
sounds. No joy. I also created a Test account with the same
disappointing results. Then, I enabled mail sounds not just for the
inbox but for all my mailboxes. When these attempts failed, an Apple
Accessibility rep suggested the radical solution of erasing the hard
drive and rolling back to Yosemite 10.10.5. This solved the problem.
I know this was a drastic step to take, especially because it
prevented further specific testing. However, since Safari was quite
flaky on my MacBook Air, and since I had reservations, as a new user,
in upgrading so soon after El Capitan was released, I figured the
safest path was to restore my machine to its Day One state, so to
speak.

BTW, there is evidence on the net for others having this problem. I
read a thread which had a number of contributors, none of whom said
they were VoiceOver users. One poster said he finally got an
admission from an Apple rep that this sound issue was a bug. However,
two Apple Accessibility reps I spoke to said they had not heard of the
problem and assured me it was not on their list of emerging issues.

Re: Two Interesting Things That Occurred During My Installation of El Capitan

2015-10-04 Thread Craig Werner
Thank you, Mark, for your compliments. Actually, the reboot I performed was
more of an act of desperation than it was calculated strategy, so I don't
think the praise is entirely deserved, but I am appreciative of the
encouragement because so often, over the past few months, I have considered
returning to Windows as I ascend Mount Mac. (smile)

The only issues I have found with El Capitan so far are the "Safari busy"
problem and the disappearance of the "new mail" sound when new messages are
received. Both, I believe, have been documented on this list. I'll keep
everyone informed as to new discoveries.

2015-10-03 Thread Craig Werner
Mark, the installer progress bar lingered for me as well. I did the same
thing as you did: turn off the machine and then turn it back on. I don't
know know how El Capitan installed itself, but it did. This odd behavior
is especially disturbing to me as a new Mac user of two months. I am
wondering if some of the problems I am having with El Capitan are due to
the way it was installed--a process I rather bumbled my way through. I'm
not at all proud of my achievement and am now thinking of reverting back to
Yosemite.

Re: Learning Pages for the Mac

2015-09-20 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Anne, and thanks for staying with me as we pursue my question.

I can wholly understand your confusion over my use of the word “column.” Some
Windows-based word processors refer to a column as simply a space occupied by a
character of text or a space proper. I am not talking about a tabular column.
Thus, if a line were to begin with the word “train,” the “r” would occupy the
second column of the line.

Setting the zoom to 200% does make it easier for me to tell the relative
position of the insertion point on a page of text. I must say that I still
prefer precise information as to the line number on which the insertion pointer
sits. For instance, let’s assume that I am writing a letter in a style
allowing for forty lines per page. If I can quickly check my cursor position,
and if that check results in the line number being read, I know exactly how
many lines I have before a page break. I find this information helpful when
spacing out a document. In time, no doubt, I will get used to the relative
position indications in inches announced by Pages. I think we can probably put
this thread to rest with many thanks for your dogged persistence. :-)

Thanks to Jonathan and Grant for very helpful posts. Fortunately, I have
not changed the path of my iTunes library on my PC, so it's pretty likely
the copying will go smoothly.

Thank you, Anne, for your response. I should have mentioned that I have Tim
Sniffen’s book, and it is indeed helpful. I’m more of a keyboard shortcut
person than a trackpad user, so some of the advice is not immediately useable
to me; but I appreciate the clear style of his explanations and the
thoroughness of his approach.

Re: Learning Pages for the Mac

2015-09-19 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Anne.

Right now, I'm doing pretty well wisth Pages. The only problem I'm having
now is not being able to tell where I am in a document. The command I am
searching for would tell me the page, line, and column number the insertion
pointer is on. VO F4 F4 was suggested, but although it supplies information
about position, it does not tell me what I wish it would.

Re: Learning Pages for the Mac

2015-09-19 Thread Craig Werner
Very true, Anne, but I'm afraid I want something more specific. If I could
make Pages announce line, page, and column number, I would have a very good
idea of where I am in a document. This would come in handy, for instance,
if I were writing a short document, and I wanted to to space it out
prettily so that it took up most of the page.

Migrating iTunes Library from PC to MacBook Air

2015-09-18 Thread Craig Werner
Greetings to the list.

Presently,my iTunes library lives on my iPhone 5 and my Windows 7 PC. I would
like to put the library on my new MacBook Air. I’m under the impression that
the Windows Migration Assistant is the best way to transfer the library. If I
use this approach, is the software accessible with a Windows screen reader?
Are there other methods of which I should be aware?

Thanks for all help.

Craig

Learning Pages for the Mac

2015-09-13 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, everyone.

I am about to start learning Pages for the Mac. For now, I seek only a
basic understanding: creating a document; changing type styles; finding and
replacing text; writing a basic header, etc. Can anyone recommend articles
or podcasts that might be helpful? Even supplying general information as to
where these resources are will suffice. I don't expect anyone to go
searching for specific links.

Thanks for all help.
