Curt,
Not being able to get the Mobil 1 products I want when I want them is
what made me look into Amsoil. I have 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel oil 100%
synthetic (AME) in one car. Series 3000 5W-30 100% synthetic(HDD) in
another. Change interval of 15,000mi on both. I also have 3 MB diesels
running on Mobil 1 15-50. Same 15,000mi oil change interval
Bottom line is; They all allow for way faster cold cranking speeds
than dino oils of the same viscosity and provide better all around
performance/longevity. I have done my own comparisons and test results
between Amsoil and Mobil 1 show little to no variation on the same
engine.
The coldest that its been since I came home was -8 F. For science, I
did not plug in the block heaters and both of the cars with Amsoil
started right up (after 2.5 glow cycles and some cranking. I couldn't
tell the difference in cranking speed between them. 15-40 is in a 602
engine, 5-30 is in a 601.
The three 617.952s I have are running the 15-50 Mobil 1. 2 out of 3
started without much fuss. The remaining car had a weak battery, after
charging it up, the temp was in the teens, car started but cannot be
used as comparison due to the rise in ambient temp.
I/my vehicles are a good test bed for cold performance due to my
geographical location. I also have 3 different MB diesel engines. I
also drive a zillion mies a year.
I am going to run the 15-40 AME in my 190D 2.5 up to 20,000 and send a
sample in for analysis. Will report on the test results when the time
comes. I do not recommend going past 15,000 mi without oil analysis. I
sleep better at night knowing that I'm causing no harm to my engines by
extending the drain intervals.

BTW if anyone is considering using Amsoil please let me get you
started. It costs $30 annually to become a dealer. I saved that plus
more $$ on my first order. I will get a stipend from Amsoil and it
won't affect your price. A win-win situation.
I should be getting the rest of my dealer kit in a couple of days and
can provide more, better info at that time. Other options are to become
a preferred customer $20/year or just go retail. If you decide to go
retail contact me and I will give you my ZO#. This will once again do

Two Walmarts still have a label on the shelf, but didn't have any in

also mentioned that it looked like the extended performance versions

They must be doing the same thing nationwide.

Three other Walmarts don't even have shelf space for it any more. Had
the auto manager at one store this morning tell me he wasn't going to

One guy told me they wouldn't be restocking the 15-50, then a month
later I see it on the shelf but they only had 5 qts. I had to go to

Find the wires up near the radio, on the TD they were green/blk and some
variants of that as I recall. If the spkrs still work you can take a 9V

have the correct pair.

 1. One of the connectors on the PB was disconnected.
 2. One screw below the vent won't do its job because the plastic around it is
broke, needs a washer.
 3. The stereo install was a kludge at best. The rear speakers don't work and I
think its because they aren't wired... Of course now it'd be a hassle to figure
out which wires are the rear speakers (unless somebody knows) so I may just run
a couple...

So maybe that connector will save the day. We'll see on my commute tonight.

Did brakes on my Galant and lower radiator hose on Diamante this
weekend. No beer, but rest was close enough. *sighs*

And since I'm typing and in a complaining mood anyway still need
a radiator, as the cause of the blown hose was the corrosion in the
radiator to begin with, which probably means I might as well go ahead
and change the water pump and thermostat, for good measure since
corrosion is in engine block and heater core as well better replace
core and all other hoses. Wonder if I can pressure wash the block
with fresh coolant / water before allowing what is currently in block
into new core and radiator.

Maybe I'd better pay to have it done, ay?

Well first of all you need to figure out how much R12 is supposed to be
in there. You want to install 80(maybe 85)% of that amount. When that
is done if everything is correct, you should probably see somewhere
between 30 and 50 on the low side and 250-350 on the high side. Sorry I
cant be more specific but alot of it depends on the temp. If you are
getting generally those kind of readings everything is probably working
right. If the high is low and low is high, then you have something
wrong. If the pressures are about the same the compressor is not doing
anything. Im sure somebody can point you to some info about what
specific things can be wrong with a given set of incorrect pressures.

pressure should I be seeing on the low side when the system is fully
charged? I'd rather use my real gauges to check this and not just rely
on the cheap gauge with plastic fittings reading in the green area.
This is my first time charging a 134 ssytem.

In answer to Tom's question about what pressure should be seen on the low
side port: It Depends.

The pressure will depend on evaporator temperature, cooling load, ambient
air temperature and engine speed, among other things. In practice, expect
to see about 300 to 350PSI on the high side with outside temperatures around
80F, and about 30-50PSI on the low side, with the engine running at 1000RPM,
and the fan speed on MAX (non-recirc).

Make sure you charge with the recommended amount of refrigerant by weight,
and everything should work out right.

We could be here debating that point for ever, I could argue that only since
the class system was truly introduce in 94 can a big merc be called an S
class.
A pontoon or finnie is not what you would call a S class but the bigger
limos of that era could be put in the S class category.
However to keep the peace I think we could all agree that the 108/9 is the
first real S class due to it's relatively large production run.

acid flush (ala MB) (removes scale) then flush with LOTS of water SEVERAL
times.

Makes sense, the Super class couldn't exist until they had a
proper compression engine for it. Maybe that's why the MBUSA
link mentioned the year 1978 for the 116 generation.

End of the day it does not matter, just a whole bunch of snobbery. Peasants
in the A or C class and only well off people in the S and upper E classes.
Of course if you really want to pose/show off then the sports or Maybach
class is the go. I suppose the Maybach could be the SS class, then again I
don't like the sound of that although propably in keeping with the attitude
of the sort of people who own Maybachs:-)

Subject: [MB] '77 6.9 diamond blue - moving, must sell

We are parting with our sports sedan. With the new job in central
Michigan, there's not a heated garage nor the time to enjoy this
great car.
It's really fun to drive. In 2002 we took it from Kansas City to
Ocean City,
Maryland, and had fun all they way there and back: 2700 miles of
cruising.
Beautiful diamond blue metallic exterior, navy blue velour, and has
68,140

miles.

I am the third owner and bought it from a collector who purchased it
from

the original owner's estate.

Suspension - main hydraulic valve, pump, and front struts replaced
2000. No
leaks, works as it should, latest check it has stayed up eight weeks,
and

can be lifted up as required. Original factory emergency rubber jacking
blocks with cables in trunk.

Climate control - A/C blows cold and is still on R-12, system has
aluminum

servo and works as it should.

Drive train -- engine starts great, runs great, doesn't use any oil.
Engine

Bay is clean, with new hood pad.

Transmission works well, no leaks, clean/crisp shifts.

Wheels/Tires - nice Michelin 215/70R14 96S XWX on Bundt Rims.

Exhaust - Stainless; cats were spent and removed.

Body - exterior: No rust, Ziebarted by original owner, never driven
in salt.
Amazingly, I was working on both my diesels one afternoon, and asked
my wife
to take the 6.9 to pick up our kids at a birthday party. a neighbor
kid ran

his go-kart into the right front fender.so it was replaced and
repainted/clear coated to match. Glass, chrome, and trim are very good.

Doors latch and check straps function as required. Door rubber and
trunk
seal could be replaced if desired. Sunroof and all windows work, no
leaks,

and rear defroster works. Has always been covered in heated garage.

Interior: Navy velour (rare US option), seats are firm and very
comfortable

in hot or cold weather. Gorgeous wood and dash, no cracks in either.
Carpets, headliner, door padding, etc very good condition with no
rips or
tears. Original radio in box in trunk. Had an Alpine CD in dash which
was

removed. Hirshmann antenna works like it should.

Accessories - everything works: cruise, turn signals, vacuum locks,
wipers,

under bumper driving lights, interior lights, cigar lighter, seat
adjustments, glove box, and so on.

All books, records, receipts, owners manual, factory data card and
tools are
available. Names of previous owners are known, name and phone of
previous

owner's mechanic and current mechanic.

50 pictures at 2MB each available by email.

Appraised for $16500. Asking $14500. Moving 28 February, must sell.

I know the term S-class was commonplace (or at least became commonplace)
sometime during the lifetime of the 126, though I don't have any handy way
of proving it---it's just something I remember from '80s car magazines. The
rest of the letter-based class system was definitely an invention of the
Mercedes marketing department for the 1994 model year, though. I snicker
whenever anyone refers to a 123 as an E-class. (Although that's not as bad
as when people refer to a 300 or 500 Mercedes, etc., as if that means
anything without the letters. Isn't eBay's category system still set up
that way---as if the numbers indicated a chassis like they do with BMWs?)

Kaleb,

As you know, any buy/sell transaction is dependent on what the buyer
and seller consider to be an agreeable price. To say that 6.9 prices
are in the toilet does not take that factor into consideration.

I try not to paint any situation with a broad brush

Unfortunately or fortunately.. I can't afford this 6.9.
But if I could, I might...

Three other Walmarts don't even have shelf space for it any more. Had

WATER and citric acid.

I'm assuming (and we all know how destructive that can be) that I will
have removed the radiator and heater core by this point, as I know at
least the radiator can not be saved. (Thing leaks like pasta in a

seems like it would flush scale from places that are going to be scraped

I'm in a similar situation (though my radiator doesn't leak), and I'm
going to flush the system with the old radiator installed and then change
over to the new radiator. You want to put in the citric acid and water and
then run the engine.

dumped the whole bottle in (27.00$ worth cdn) and wasn't too impressed with
it although there was better improvement with it then any other product. For
the drive, I added three table spoons worth, within a 100 kms, you should
see the mud in there, it really moved stuff around and no more running hot
 or gurgling on shut down.

Hi-

The MBZ Part No. for Citric Acid is 000-989-10-25.

The procedure is to drain and flush the system and then refill with water
and the acid powder dissolved in 1 qt. or liter of warm water. You then have
to get it up to operating temperature and hold it there for 20 to 30 minutes
while running the heater.

WARNING: If the only thing between your system and leaking is calcium
buildup, this will remove the calcium, and you will get leaks!

If you really want to go crazy, MBZ has a separate de-oiler product that
removes oil and grease from your cooling system: 001-986-21-71

WARNING: After using either or both of these products, you MUST flush at
least three times with clean water, running the system to operating
temperature for 20 to 30 minutes with the heater on. Residue from either
will prematurely age new antifreeze coolant.

Done right, either is a half-day job, both eat up a whole day, and also
generate a lot of waste water, which is why the dealers never do it, they
just use the machine which allegedly pushes in new coolant and pushes out
the old coolant. My one experience with that was a never again. The idiot
kid the dealer had running the machine didn't know that you had to open up
the heater core valves, so the new coolant was contaminated with 1.5L of
old. At that point I said let me do this myself and right.

I am mulling over doing it again and putting in the Xerex Extend that you
put in full strength and is good for three years.

Yeah, me and Frank are on a first name basis. Actually, it gets even
worse. My dealership loves me so much, that a newer service writer
that has only seen me a couple of times in my Green Galant (which is

Out of curiousity, what kind of pump would I use to circulate the
Prestone and Citric Acid? I'm assuming (and we all know how
destructive that can be) that I will have removed the radiator and
heater core by this point, as I know at least the radiator can not be
saved. (Thing leaks like pasta in a collander) Or do I need to try and
run this through the entire existing system? Before replacement parts
are ready to be installed? Though that seems like it would flush scale
from places that are going to be scraped anyway should a google
of radiator flush help here, or do I need more info?

Re: [MBZ] Cold WX Trans Cooler Line Failure

2006-02-09 Thread Trampas
You will usually be OK as long as trans did not start slipping real bad and
you tried to keep driving.

Also it is better to repair trans cooler lines using compression fittings
from local hardware store. Additionally you can use flare fittings too.

I have found that with the rubber hose clamp method people make a couple of
mistakes. First they use fuel line, which is not designed for high pressure
and may not be ATF safe. You need to use high pressure hose designed for
ATF. The second problem is that the metal line is smooth and easy for rubber
to slide off, especially when metal contracts when it is cold outside.
Therefore I will often use two clamps on each side. However it is best if
you can use a flare type tool to create a ridge or barbs.

Using two clamps and the correct type of hose, I have done several trans
cooler line repairs and never have had a problem. I have tried regular fuel
line and always end up with leaks.

Why would you have to lift the engine to replace the cooler line? Its
only about a foot long between the front of the engine metal lines and
the radiator. Or are you saying your metal lines are leaking? Even so,
you shouldnt have to raise the engine any.

 The

anything without the letters. Isn't eBay's category system still set up

Dan,

You should be OK with just a few blocks of driving. BTDT.

Of course my daughter completely muched a 722.315 by driving (probably
at considerable speed, knowing her) until the car wouldn't go any more
when one of the transmission cooler lines blew.

A year or so ago, I patched the trans cooler line on my 300SD by
slipping fuel line over the break and firmly attaching both ends with
stainless worm-drive hose clamps, torqued down until rubber was
popping through the holes in the clamps.

Worked fine at speeds of up to 90, full throttle shifts, etc. for a
year, and I had been reassured by the list, notably including Doktor
Booth, that there was little pressure in the line and I (to quote)
SHOULD be ok, but that replacing the line would the the BETTER
solution. He was right, on both counts. Of course.

I was delighted that Sadie started right up with only one glow and no
block heater at 4 above this morning. Three blocks later the trans
started slipping. Turned around and barely made it back in the drive,
to find a large pool of trans fluid on the pavement where I'd started.

Apparently very cold trans fluid makes enough pressure to pop off
hose clamps. I'll get a tow down to my local indy for a fluid and
filter change, including a TC drain, and to have them install the new
line I bought from Rusty ages ago but chickened out on replacing when
I found I'd have to unbolt an engine mount and lift the engine.

Should I be worried about any trans damage I may have done in the 6
blocks of driving I did as the trans was emptying?

[MBZ] Fuel Leak Diesel 300SD 85

Fuel Leak hose diameter on leak off connection

I am getting a fuel leak on 2 of the injectors. It appears to be that the cloth
covered rubber? Fuel lines that go between the injectors (on the leak off
connection) are in need of replacement.. What is the ID of this hose?

There are multiple sources of EURO OEM type hose here in Dallas.

Here is the procedure for de-oiling and de-calcifying a OM617 cooling
system. I used this method on my Toyota. I figured if it was good enough for
the German cars, it would be good enough for Japanese as well. For the
de-oiling part I used Prestone Flush, followed by water. Then I used the
citric acid flush, followed by water. I bought the citric acid on eBay,
Rusty stocks it and could have it to you in a day, two max.

Re: [MBZ] 9th generation S-class...

2006-02-09 Thread Loren Faeth
I agree with the factory. I am not as familiar with the 187, but there
were definitely S models with the same distinction then as now. S has had
two concurrent meanings of years in reference to MB models.

S as in Sport 300SL, 190SL, SLK 230, 170S
S as in Super 220S, 220Sa, 220Sb, 300SE and so on forward.

Then mid 60s 300SE is a beautiful car. IMHO, it is the only Mercedes Benz
that rivals the appearance (profile) of the long 126 for beauty and
style. Every time I see one, I drool, because they are so rare. Its
engine borrows heavily from the 300SL technology.

Actually, I could argue that the 51 to 53 models are the second generation
S as in Super chassis

Prewar, there was the Typ SS (Super Sport) (and yall thought chevy
invented that name in 1965)

and the typ SSK (Super Sport Kurz)

[MBZ] Oil filter leak

2006-02-09 Thread Brian Chase
You will be able to tell this question comes from someone who hasn't put in
many miles in their 240D yet:

Regarding the oil filter: There is a remote, drop-in-element type filter,
correct? I thought it was mounted on the firewall. Am I incorrect? Are there
two oil filters - a remote one, and a traditional block-mounted, screw-on
type?

Reason asked: The mechanic says there's a leak at the fuel filter housing
gasket. And he says it's mounted to the engine block. My mind is picturing
that unit on the driver's side of the engine that (I thought) was mounted to
the firewall. I'm trippin out. Maybe that is the fuel filter. Hardcore
dieselers: try to disguise your disgust.

I know, I should look at the manual on CD. I don't have it with me right
now. By way of clarification, the car isn't near me either. I know the
gasket will be inexpensive, but wonder if the dealer will take a few days to
order it in. Won't be able to provide part no. (as in for Rusty) 'til I
actually get my hands on the car. And by that time I won't have much time
for it to be shipped to me.

Oop, that will be confusing. I meant to say the mechanic says there is a
leak at the OIL filter housing gasket, not a fuel leak like I mistakenly
wrote in my previous post.

I'm curious, too. There *are* simple ways to create parallel hybrids --
for example, a road-coupled hybrid where you have the electric motor
connected to one set of wheels and the gasoline engine connected to the
other. The series hybrid is conceptually simpler but requires a
seperate generator and a larger electric motor, so it drives up the cost
and weight. In a parallel hybrid the same device can serve as both
motor and generator.

Re: [MBZ] Oil filter leak

2006-02-09 Thread Loren Faeth
Oil filter housing gasket is a paper gasket. The oil filter assy is held
on with 5 allen bolts. you will need a 6 mm allen wrench, and you get to
it from underneath. if you use any RTV or other sealant, apply a very thin
film only with your finger. It should look and feel like almost
nothing. If you put on more, a glop can plug oil passages and ruin your
new expensive engine. You should try tightening the bolts FIRST!

If the problem is the system not switching on, try clicking to Defrost,
then back to whatever mode you want to be in. This overrides the
startup delay. My car sometimes needs this after warm starts. On cold
starts the automatic delay functions properly.

[MBZ] Oil, oil, which oil!?

2006-02-09 Thread kayoooh @ gmail
Hello Group,
I just got back to Texas from Jacksonville, Florida after picking my newly
acquired 6.5l Diesel Suburban.

Talk about the noise level inside that cabin let alone outside it!
I guess I got spoiled by the more refined MB ML 400CDI! In the Mercedes, one
barely notices the noise, but I guess I'll have to get used to it, until I
can bring the ML into the country, that is.

Now for the reason I am posting, I am about to change the engine oil and was
about to pick a few jugs of Mobil 1 when I remembered how some of us are
looking hard for M1 10-50 or was it M1 15-50, why is that so, why is M1
xx-30 not wanted, is it unsuitable? And if it is unsuitable, why is it so?

And what about AT fluid, do you think I should stick with Dexron or give the
synthetic stuff a try!?

Last, and Kaleb maybe the one who knows about this, truck I bought came with
the tall 4.10 rear end and I am thinking of changing the rear end to the
more economical 3.70. The only downside I am aware of as of now is that the
towing capacity drops from 10,000 lbs. to 8,000 lbs. (or was it from 8,000
lbs to 6,000 lbs!?).
Can anyone tell me in real life terms what would be a 10,000 , 8,000 and
6,000 lbs tow?

I don't envision towing anything more than a UHAUL trailer every now and
then and even more rare, an inoperable car on the back of a trailer.

Any help will be greatly appreciated and thank you all,

Omar.

Re: [MBZ] 1985 300SD Odometer Repair

2006-02-09 Thread Trampas
You need new gears which are easy to install yourself www.odometergears.com

To remove instrument cluster:

#1 get metal coat hanger
#2 cut two straight pieces about 6 long
#3 put a 90 degree bend in each about 1/4 inch up from one end making an L
#4 put one L on left side of cluster one on right. Push the small part of
L inbetween cluster and dash. Twist each one such L is pointing towards
center of cluster.
#5 Pull.

Cluster comes out and you can disconnect stuff on back. Then side out from
behind steering wheel.

Not that I found that for all the cars I have played with you can just grab
instrument cluster by hand, no metal hooks or L things, and just pull out.

steering wheel . remove, reinstall. And the use of Extractor hook PN 126 589
03 33 00. Is an extractor hook something I can make / improvise. Do I need
to remove the steering wheel? If so what is the best way to go about it.

On my '81 300TD, the driver door groans every time you open it. The
groaning begins upon opening, continues for 45 degrees of arc, then quits.

There is no play in the hinges according to the yank and heave test
method. I have greased and re-greased the hinges over and over. I have
soaked everything I can see with lots of Kroil Grease easily flows from the
hinge parting lines.

This is driving me nutz. Help!

Re: [MBZ] Fuel Leak Diesel 300SD 85

2006-02-09 Thread Loren Faeth
There are two types of plug for the last injector. One is a cap type that
does not last long. THe other is a steel barbed plug that goes in a 1
piece of the return hose, then the hose slips on the injector barb. If you
have the hose type, you don't need to buy anything. Just slit the old hose
and pull out the plug and shove it into the new hose.

If you have the cap style, buy a plug from Rusty along with the hose. (cheap)

Get the plug for the last injector, too. It likes to split when it gets
old.

Re: [MBZ] high schoolers' diesel-electric hybrid - series or parallel hybrid?

2006-02-09 Thread Christopher McCann
ah. that's ingenious. But why in the road coupled version do you need an
extra generator? You have one engine which powers, say the front wheels
conventionally and it also turns a generator which powers an electric motor
which drives the rear wheels at a certain point, the conventional disengages
and you run electric...where does the second generator come in?

David Brodbeck [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Christopher McCann wrote:
Does anyone recall from the article - was it a parallel hybrid (like prius)
or a series hybrid like a locomotive (SIMPLE!).

Yeah, it's a pain. It's a decision of Do I want to fool around with rring

Its the limiting strap, it also gives you the two positions plus some
friction to keep you from tossing it open to fast. I use spray white
lithium grease.
