Drove the E420 back from Memphis y'day. The platinum plugs appreciated the
nice five hour interstate runs to-from Memphis, as the usual 15 mile daily
commute was getting them gunked up and grumpy...

[MBZ] latest 1982 300td ac saga

2015-09-08 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks,

i did a stupid thing but it;s fixed now.

After the r4 ac compressor blew its housing a month ago, i had to fix it. I
bought a compressor on amazon and a receiver drier on ebay or somewhere and
found some more straight mineral oil and assorted seals and orings and etc.

I went to my ac expert. He hung the compressor and i hung the receiver. He's
younger than my 61 years and refuses to wear glasses. We were working at his
place about 40 miles north of here. We evacuated and charged the system with
some of my r12 stash.

About 10 miles south of him, headed to athens, i stopped for a few minutes and
then when i started again, NO AC. I stopped and looked at it and saw that the
ac belt had broken but the compressor was still free.

The next day we tried to install the belt and noticed that the pulleys didn't
line up. A little research by looking at some of my failed compressors
determined that the R4 installed on the Benz had an incorrect pulley for a
benz. So, the AC guy who refuses to wear reading glasses installed the
compressor with a pulley that was a belt width off alignment …. a guaranteed
failure.

SO, since i didn't want to pull the compressor and recharge the system, i
started studying how to remove the pulley. The compressor i bought was just
some random r4 for a GM application. I thought they all had the same pulley
setup. Anyway, i watched some videos by BOB on youtube about removing and
installing the clutch and pulley.

Fortunately, auto zone has LOTS of ac tools to borrow. I got a bunch of pullers
and such and easily took one apart on the bench.

Can it be done in the car …. Yes, with some effort. I had to remove the
radiator and then there is just enough room. There are a bunch of details. …
snap rings and beys in the shaft. So, probably 12 man hours later or more (not
including time researching the procedures) i am back on the road with ice cold
AC.

So, i was stupid for buying the wrong part.

My AC guy was even stupider for installing it

And i was even stupider that that for not comparing old and new part and not
inspecting the job better.

He DOES do a good job …. his work has held pressure (no freon added) for the 3
or 4 year life that is the max i've ever gotten out of an R4

Take heed and learn from my mistakes.

No animals were harmed and no freon was vented.

Now i'm off to Tupelo MS to deliver a 1500 lb printing press as soon as i get
the press ready and loaded. I hate hauling the ones that are that heavy.

thanks,

xx rick

A heating pad is a heater.

"almost no current" when there is 115 VAC in the wall outlet
is not the same as battery power!

> Typically these:

That page reports "The Seedling Heat Mat uses 17 watts".

With a 100% efficient inverter and 12 VDC battery, that will
draw about 1.5 amps.

Figuring on inverter losses, etc., lets round that off to 2 A.

To run one for 24 hours would require (2 x 24) 48 Amp-Hours (Ah).

Since this would be about the time of the spring equinox,
there should be about 12 hours of sunlight. That is NOT 12
hours of max output from a photo-voltaic panel, but I'll
ignore that for now. I expect you will want the pv panel to
run the heater _and_ charge the battery, so it will need at
least 4 A output - or about 50 W.

Since it is never good to let a wet cell run all the way
down, and to allow for decreased capacity over time, that
would suggest a 50 Ah battery to effectively power one
heater overnight. (24 Ah draw from a 2 A load for 12 hours -
rounded up.)

That amounts to a 20 W inverter, a 50 W pv panel, and a 50 Ah
battery - for each heating pad. A quick look at Amazon for
prices results in almost $500 to run two heat pads.

How many do you use? How much to run an AC power cord?

I was indeed surprised to find the spare tire in the condition shown in
the attached picture. It had not seen the ground in years, yet it
spontaneously shed its tread. I'm glad I wasn't driving on it when it
happened. I'm also very glad I didn't discover it when I needed to use
the spare.

Maybe saying an old tire should not be used is valid after all.

Now I need to get a new spare.

Pretty old tar. I think Armstrong's been dead for ~20 years or so.
Probably not a big surprise it came apart.

This spring one of my 17 yr old farstones came apart. It was not unexpected.

This summer one of the ~40 yr old tractor tars disintegrated at the
bead. (steel inside rusted to dust)

The old WWII vintage S-3 synthetic rubber compound tars would last
for 40-50 years. Most tars now are unsafe after 8-10 years.

Medium-large name brand home panels can be had for under $1 per rated watt.
So figure $0.20-0.25 per daily watt-hour, plus mounts, wiring, inverter, etc.
My after tax rate for electricity is 0.14+, so it can pay off in the lifetime
of the equipment now, the bare PV panel cost can be recovered in 4-5 years.

All you really need are a couple of group 49 or 93 batteries, a battery charger
and a cheap inverter.

Every morning and evening, put a freshly charged battery in the shed and take
the other one to
the house and put it on the charger. Consider it free exercise carrying 50lb
batteries around.

I assume the rapid jack is similar to a two stage hyd pump often used
in things like a log splitter. in that, there are actually 2 pumps.
one high volume low pressure, and one lower volume, higher pressure.
At the set pressure, the pump shifts from one pump to the other. On
those pumps, I think it is done with a valve or valves that shift the
fluid flow from one side to the other.

Probably aa rusty stuck valve or shot orings that allow the oil by so
it does not shift.

I'd guess all it needs is cleaning and new orings. (outta the same $8 HF set)

I "fixed" those by buying a new pump from Northern Tool when the
internal leakage got too high.

and figure they're both lying about 50%. The Dems say the economy is plugging

Republicans say everything sucks and until every last liberal is shot and

I take from that if we basically leave things alone it'll probably be alright.

Actually Andrew my room mate died last November she now votes

Use of the words "truth" and "democrat" or "republican" in the same
sentence is, I believe, an "un-truth" in action.

I'm sure I could introduce you to many interesting geological formations in

a change.. ha.. ;)

Then your pump must be a different design. Mine has two external pistons and a
slotted lever with a sliding pin. It also has a foot pedal that operates the
quick-lift in addition to the handle. If the pin doesn't slide, then the
smaller slow rise piston doesn't go down and all that works is the bigger
quick-rise. The jack is several years old, so it may be an early design. It
came from Autozone.

Re: [MBZ] OT (?) Mice eating the wiring

2015-09-08 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
We've installed a "mouse fence" around the carport - 10" high aluminum
flashing all the way around. You have to lift and move the section behind
the car you're going to drive, but since we typically only drive each one
once a week, that's not a big deal.
So far, no more indications of mice in the car or truck, and none the traps
inside the fence, but then again, I didn't catch any around the cars before
we installed the fence. However, one of the traps was carried 20 feet or so
down the drive one night, and now it's missing altogether, so I'm thinking
I'm dealing with something larger than a mouse. Hence, I'm off to install
and electric fence wire an inch or two above the "mouse fence" to
discourage (or hopefully kill) what ever is prowling around the cars at
night.

I think that when the external force required to move the lift pad is too
high, it goes slow. So, if you lube the whole thing, you can eliminate that
as the cause, or you've just fixed it with a few blasts of your favorite
aerosol lubricant. If this fixes it, then use a good grease for longer
lasting lubrication.

[MBZ] GPS?

2015-09-08 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

a friend has a TomTom GPS unit that is not working.
It is several years old and has not been used often.
He is planning on a road trip starting on Friday and has been trying to
get it to work.

No luck. It won't do much but fire up and then quit.

A brief google search suggests they are junk and a lot of them have this
sort of issue.
Anyone have any good advice to pass along apart from what I already
said, which was to toss it and go buy a new Garmin?

The forecast is for it to continue into tomorrow making this a bonafide
"heatwave". Police are asking people to look out for each other...
Its probably 95F here and 70% humidity. It got down to 70F last night but
the dew point and the temp were about the same, not conducive to sleeping.
We ran the AC until about 2am just to knock down the humidity.
Fortunately starting next week or so we should see the cool off. I'm ready
for snow.

When we last left our hero the 2005 VW Golf TDI there were no reverse
lights. A trip back to the TDI guru confirmed that the shift linkage in
the transmission was incorrect for that car and would never have worked,
fortunately the old transmission donated its shift tower which works
perfectly. So now we're all inspected and legal.
Driving home from the TDI guru today I was glad for the "ICE COLD AC" in
the car, its hot and sticky today with only the hint of a breeze.
Having put over 100 miles on it now the carbon is starting to burn out of
the engine. When I first got it it would smoke pretty bad on cold start,
now it blows one puff and settles down. It also had "turbo hunt" which I
guess is common on the variable vane turbos but a couple good highway
runs

has burned off that carbon and its better. What I was finding was that in
2nd gear at around 2,000 rpm (quick driving in a parking lot say) the car
would surge and back off, surge and back off. That is completely gone,
now

the only complaint is the turbo vanes don't open up completely until
around 2,200 rpm so I get a hard engagement then. Its fun to drive that
way but not right.
My '98 is faster until the '05's turbo really kicks in, then it can start
to pull away. I think in the quarter mile the '98 gets the edge, the '05
has 10 more HP and 30lb/ft of torque but it weighs something like 400#
more. In a mile or longer run I think the '05 would have it. The '05 is
quieter and more refined too.
Last step (for now) is to get a new driver's side front fender.
Supposedly

a yard near work has an A+ perfect one, I'll call and see if I can get it
tomorrow.

That, or something larger is going for the mouse caught by the trap.
That's what was happening here earlier in the summer. I wanted to stake

[MBZ] Fountains of Fun!

2015-09-08 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

Yesterday I drove the 560SEL, and as usual when it starts to
get a bit colder it needed to crank awhile. Of course it
smelled a bit gassy, but as I drove I thought it smelled
_too_ gassy, and decided to stop before I got on the freeway.

As I popped the hood, engine running, it made a coughing
backfire sound. Up went the hood and OMFG, kill this thing
quick! There was a fountain of gasoline arcing up, and landing
back on the brake booster (now that the hood was up).

The return fuel line had split, and had soaked the hood pad
and the entire area, which was sizzling and fuming hot gasoline
all over the place. Eye-burningly strong.

We were one spark away from an inferno, and it's amazing that
the backfire (?) didn't make it out of the air cleaner far enough
to do the deed.

I had enough tools along, and the hose was long enough, that I
cut off the end and we were able to proceed on our way. I had
recently looked over that hose, and thought it to be still in
good shape. Clearly I was wrong.

How does leaving Nebraska going to Alaska make it a scam?

That does not, but the low price along with the sob story identify
(are consistent with) a scam.

Maos questions still apply:

Is it realistic that an AF guy less than a major or light bird could
afford this wagon?

WHy not take it to AK?
Etc.

These things along with the low price and sob story confirm it is a scam

I encountered one of these sob stories several years ago. It was
some woman being shipped off to desert areas, etc etc, advertised the
vehicle in gufpo't (and other places) but when you inquired and asked
to see it, it was in WA. (yeah, right...) Several other answers to
questions didn't add up. I played "her " for a while with email,
then "she" stopped answering questions. "She" had figured out we
both knew it was a scam.

Subject: [MBZ] latest 1982 300td ac saga

Folks,

i did a stupid thing but it;s fixed now.

About 10 miles south of him, headed to athens, i stopped for a few minutes
and then when i started again, NO AC. I stopped and looked at it and saw
that the ac belt had broken but the compressor was still free.

The next day we tried to install the belt and noticed that the pulleys
didn't line up. A little research by looking at some of my failed
compressors determined that the R4 installed on the Benz had an incorrect
pulley for a benz. So, the AC guy who refuses to wear reading glasses
installed the compressor with a pulley that was a belt width off
alignment …. a guaranteed failure.

I got a bunch of
pullers and such and easily took one apart on the bench.

Can it be done in the car …. Yes, with some effort. I had to remove the
radiator and then there is just enough room. There are a bunch of details. …
snap rings and beys in the shaft. So, probably 12 man hours later or more
(not including time researching the procedures) i am back on the road with
ice cold AC.

So, i was stupid for buying the wrong part.

My AC guy was even stupider for installing it

And i was even stupider that that for not comparing old and new part and not
inspecting the job better.

He DOES do a good job …. his work has held pressure (no freon added) for the

Ash is premiere stuff. Its hard, it burns good and dries faster than
oak.Nothing at all like poplar, perhaps you're thinking of Balm of Giliad which
we have in abundance on my farm and is a total trash tree. Poplar is at least
valuable for OSB production...

Electricity here is, IIRC, $0.055/kWH, so it would take nearly 3x

OSB??

Does ash split easily? IIRC black locust is numero uno in heat value but
extremely tough to split...

My favorite splitting wood is black walnut. Grain is unbelievably straight
and true.

Re: [MBZ] Why your junker ain't worth as much now

2015-09-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I don't hold that against Obama, its been the policy for a long time. I can't
remember when it started though. I'm thinking during the New Deal so under
FDR's watch, but I can't be sure of that.
Not so much Obama but Nancy P and her crowd would just pay people who weren't
working because "the government can take care of you".
Read the Honor Harrington series by David Webber, its a classic "Space Opera"
and one of the governments in it is clearly a "Social Democracy" with a rabble
of people on the basic living wage (ie welfare) and the economy of the place
relies on expansion and taxation of an increasingly small number of people
actually willing to work. So they invade "The kingdom" (a constitutional
monarchy) to "release the riches of the people" etc...The first couple books
are great, lots of space battles and action. As they go on the start to drag. I
nearly quit in book 8 because its all boring exposition about this or that
political maneuver, apparently book 9 is worse so I haven't tried it...

Re: [MBZ] Why your junker ain't worth as much now

2015-09-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The price of scrap metals is also down because of overproduction of raw
materials. There are several new mines in Australia that MUST produce to pay
the creditors, normally a mine would shut down in view of the low commodity
price but they can't.
Good news is that the influx of new material will result in better quality
metals for awhile. Using all scrap gradually degrades production...

Sorry Andrew.. you are using "co-mingled logic"..

Inflation is a stand alone issue.

Scrap prices are a stand alone issue.

Raw material demand drives scrap price far more than dollar value. Same for
crude oil, and other commodities.

When American economy thrives, Americans consume more than any other
country in the world, per capita, and pay for it because we are all "rich"
by comparison. Those countries buy raw materials and convert them to
finished goods with cheap labor and lack of EPA style government
intervention, for sale to their number one customer, USA.

Sales are flat lined, future orders are flat lined, and thus, production at
these "raw product buyer" countries is flat lined.  China, when USA economy
was booming pre 2008, was paying over $300 per ton of scrap steel and
couldn't get enough to fill manufacturing orders in the que.. Now... very
low demand due to low sales of finished goods.. because Americans are not
buying..

When America stops buying, other countries stop producing, their workers
stop working, and paying taxes, feeding their families.

Mr. Obama, whom you give reference to, has done nothing visible to improve
Americas economy in the past 6 1/2 years except borrow more and spend on
things like Solandra, and bank bailouts, which rewarded bad business
practice. So, by my rules, he has not been the "change we've been hoping
for". Your personal mileage may vary.

Diesel price here is now $2.19 per gallon... so I may start driving more..
which will drive demand up, and ultimately, the price of crude..
Eventually, I will wear out a part on the Mercedes, need a new one, someone
in China will take the order, along with others, buy some scrap, smelt it
down, make new parts, and ship one to me...

Respectfully,

Grant...

Re: [MBZ] OT: Practical solar application

2015-09-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Ash is what they make baseball bats out of, its extremely straight grained but
a bit flexible which is what makes it good for bats. The same straight nature
makes it easy to split, not so easy as oak as its kind of fibrous, meaning the
fibers kind of cling together while you try to get the pieces apart. I haven't
had a lot of experience with it, we don't have any on the farm although it is
native to our area.
OSB is Oriented Strand Board, aka wafer board, the plywood like stuff they make
houses out of. It uses cheap woods like poplar. Last spring our neighbor was
getting (IIRC) $40/cord for poplar. That was what he was actually getting paid
by the harvester, that guy was getting probably $80 at the mill.
Remember also when I say poplar I mean quaking aspen not the tulip polar
furniture makers use.

OSB??

Does ash split easily?  IIRC black locust is numero uno in heat value but
extremely tough to split...

My favorite splitting wood is black walnut.  Grain is unbelievably straight and
true.

valuable for OSB production...

Is ash categorized as a hard or soft wood for wood heat purposes?  IIRC it has
a sooty burn with low BTUs, much like poplar.  Or not...

I've been stocking up on firewood, a friend has a processor and is giving me
$180/cord for ash if I pick it up myself. I've got around 3 cords now and plan
to get one more before the month is out. I've got another cord and a half to
two cords of good dry stuff so that the stuff I'm buying now will probably not
be used this year. I *think* we could heat the whole house on 5 cords a year
but we just use it as supplemental. The furnace keeps us at 62F, the woodstove
is anything we want over that. When we do solar hot water in the daytime we'll
use any excess from that to warm the house, should drive down our oil and wood
bill seriously.

Electricity here is, IIRC, $0.055/kWH, so it would take nearly 3x
as long.  Hydro rules!  :-)

Not true, and not a valid accounting of unemployment. The books have been
cooked.

Drive down any main street in any town in America today and count the
closed businesses.

The cumulative effect is jobs lost in every one of them, not replaced by
new industry.

"Creative reporting" to get re-elected ... facts are facts.. jobs are
scarce, hours worked are down, if you have one, manufacturing orders are
flat lined, so new hires to fill future orders are flat lined..

Doesn't fly...

[MBZ] VW Golf TDI saga nearing the finish line

2015-09-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
When we last left our hero the 2005 VW Golf TDI there were no reverse lights. A
trip back to the TDI guru confirmed that the shift linkage in the transmission
was incorrect for that car and would never have worked, fortunately the old
transmission donated its shift tower which works perfectly. So now we're all
inspected and legal.
Driving home from the TDI guru today I was glad for the "ICE COLD AC" in the
car, its hot and sticky today with only the hint of a breeze.
Having put over 100 miles on it now the carbon is starting to burn out of the
engine. When I first got it it would smoke pretty bad on cold start, now it
blows one puff and settles down. It also had "turbo hunt" which I guess is
common on the variable vane turbos but a couple good highway runs has burned
off that carbon and its better. What I was finding was that in 2nd gear at
around 2,000 rpm (quick driving in a parking lot say) the car would surge and
back off, surge and back off. That is completely gone, now the only complaint
is the turbo vanes don't open up completely until around 2,200 rpm so I get a
hard engagement then. Its fun to drive that way but not right.
My '98 is faster until the '05's turbo really kicks in, then it can start to
pull away. I think in the quarter mile the '98 gets the edge, the '05 has 10
more HP and 30lb/ft of torque but it weighs something like 400# more. In a mile
or longer run I think the '05 would have it. The '05 is quieter and more
refined too.
Last step (for now) is to get a new driver's side front fender. Supposedly a
yard near work has an A+ perfect one, I'll call and see if I can get it
tomorrow.

Re: [MBZ] Why your junker ain't worth as much now

2015-09-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Your view doesn't fly either, drive around and look at the "help wanted"
signs. The businesses that went out of main street were the ones too stupid to
realize that customer service was going to save the day. Wal-Mart and Home
Depot can't match my local hardware store and lumber yard. I go there because
they know me and they'll help me. In fact I walk out of Home Depot in
frustration more than I buy something, I don't even know why I try to go there
other than to look at things that I end up buying locally or online. Their
customer service sucks.
The problem is the people that won't take jobs that are "beneath them" which is
where traditionally the illegal alien has come in. A friend of mine runs a fish
farm where they raise fish for fancy restaurants, he says they can't keep staff
and have a hard time finding anybody that really wants to work.
Mike Rowe has an excellent Facebook feed where he talks about the entitlement
culture and how young people seem to all think they're going to be CEO in 2
years...
