Switches were fully functional prior to putting the fresh motor in. Then none
of the switches would function. I cleaned them, and even my spares, just for
good measure. Now only the driver side rear responds to switch from the
console, while the rear switches do provide window action.

I remain confused

Re: [MBZ] "smart" cars (Not Smart)

2018-04-14 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

Yeah, those Hondys are bad news. Now, if they had bought a Tojo they could have
relaxed and the Tojo would have driven them home. (Just kidding!)

We Geezers call them Tojo's because General Tojo was the infamous top Japanese
general during WW-2 that everybody hated.

After driving the Tojo 25K miles just around the county; (I've only made 2
trips on the interstate which were sort of hair raising in the middle lane of
I-75 South when surrounded by big cars and trucks doing 80); it's just now
needed it's first repair.

The "Red Light of Death" (check engine light) came on, and testing identified
it as the 12 volt electric pump that drives the inverter cooling system.

The inverter(s) change the 400+ traction battery volts to 12 volts for running
the computers, lights, and all the other geejaws that need 12 volts which
include charging the 12 volt battery; as well as changing the 400+ volts to
140+ volts for running the air conditioning compressor, so it needs it's own
cooling system.
In order to change the 12 volt pump, the left front fender; which is made of
tin that's not much thicker than a tin can, has to be loosened and the left
headlight assembly removed. Then it's a simple job to disconnect the hoses and
install the new pump.

While the Tojo has been down, I've been driving the 240D. I was thinking about
selling the diesels and going "modern", but getting into the innards of the Tojo
changed my mind. There just isn't much between you and a vehicle that hits you
head on in the Tojo or nearly any of the these "modern" short-hooded cars.

Driving the 240D is so much more relaxing than driving the Tojo, I might sell
the Tojo and pretty much rebuild the 240D which needs the usual upgrades of a
35 year old Mercedes; rubber all around, various suspension parts, slow leaking
A/C lines, etc. The 190K engine still runs like a new one, as does the
stickshift transmission. Amazingly the rear axle boots are still in good shape.

Anyway, back to the shop and the Tojo which still needs 3 quarts of coolant and
re-assembly. This car has more nuts and bolts than an old Erector set.

[MBZ] 400E Fun

2018-04-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Low key day today…

Put the new “Battery in Trunk” label on the new apparatus box cover.

Put the “Mercedes and AMG prefer Mobil1 Products” label on the fan shroud.

Replaced the lower windshield trim/seal on the right side, as the original was
coming apart. Replaced the seal on the left side part, too.

Installed a used OE window regulator on the left rear door, as the original one
was toast. Motor appeared to be dead as the cable was stuck and wouldn’t move.
I bet the thermal breaker in the motor is just open circuited, but I was too
“meh” to bother taking it apart to check.

Installed a nice used center vent assembly to replace the original, which was
self destructing and no longer working properly.

I still have some other things to do to the car, but they’re all major
undertakings (motor mounts, headliner.) Not sure I’ll take one of them on
tomorrow.

The 3M film is sold here for both UV blocking and hurricane protection.
Security is a secondary benefit for most.

I made the mistake of using 3/4” treated plywood last year, thinking that
thicker is better and treated would weather better.

Wrong.

The stuff was so heavy it was unmanageable. So now I’m using this:

But cutting it to fit inside the window openings, as my windows are recessed
into the walls about 4”-6”.

Then securing it with these:

realize significant savings. Our house was built right around the time that

That sucks for them, for sure.

And the reason why the next house I build, if I ever do build again, will have
sprinklers.  The initial cost to include them in the build isn’t that
significant relative to the total cost of the home, and they reduce the
insurance cost and almost totally assure the likelihood of survival of a fire
with minimal damage.

We considered it on the house we built in WI.  At the time (1991) it would have
added about $5k to the total cost of the house ($120k) but would have cut our
insurance over 50%/year.

Lots of emotional appeal to wick lanterns and nothing beats a Coleman-style

beat for convenience. I have been using a couple of these:

You have to actively turn the nannies on in our Subaru - and can just as
easily turn them off . . .
I've never turned on the "lane assist" stuff.

Re: [MBZ] "smart" cars (Not Smart)

2018-04-14 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I wonder if that behavior is a result of the automotive equivalent of the BSOD
and the car needs a hard reboot. Not that having that happen is in any way
acceptable but that might be how to get the nannies back in line.

They also need to get to the stealer and document the problem and get all the
info in the system then get copies of the service and send it all to NHTSA and
the newspaper and tv outlets. It could get picked up on the wire and get some
exposure.

[MBZ] "smart" cars (Not Smart)

2018-04-14 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

This does not have to do with a Smart (TM) car.

Some friends just got home form FL, driving a 2017 Hondog pitot with all
the latest electronic "smart" crap. "lane control" "Driver assist" and
a slew of other "marketing phrases" are built into the POS.They got
into schnee for the last 35 or so miles, (out of 1500 or so) and shortly
after the "Driver assist" electronics went bizerk. According to their
report, the thing was steering them all over the road (Interstate).
They slowed, got off, and continued the last 20 miles or so driving
slowly on gravel roads. Apparently the electrons let them drive(or at
least steer) the veeehicle if they were slow enough.

There is no way (that they can find) to turn off this crap. When the
"elektronisch getrankt" the thing can kill you.

It is quite possible that schnee or road slop froze over some sensor
that caused this behavior, but whatever the cause, the result is dangerous.

In our house in Los Alamos, we had the original 1959 steel casement
windows. Leaky and drafty. Cold in the winter. We replaced them. You
are right, the costs are stupid!

I think our costs were around $13,000. If you, by your "another 25% off"
could save $250/year, it would take 52 years to pay off from reduced
insurance costs alone.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Homeowner's Insurance WIN!

2018-04-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Our (new) roof will be shingles as the original is. However, the nailing
schedule along with the more modern roofing materials bumps the roof’s wind
rating from 60 mph (I think) to over 130 mph. While it’s not a metal roof,
that’s pretty darned good for a shingle roof.

My current homeowner’s insurance is about $1700/year. It will drop to at least
$1000/year with the new roof, and possibly more. If I got newer rated windows
installed it would knock another 25% off, however, I’m not going to replace
windows anytime soon as the costs are stupid and mine are in good shape. I
just bought a bunch of polystyrene sheets that will be cut to cover the windows
in the event of a hurricane, so with those I should be just fine. The total
cost for the polystyrene was around $900, far less than the cost of new windows.

So in a little over a year’s time, I will have replaced the AC, hot water
heater, and roof. Darned near a new house.

Subject: [MBZ] OT - Homeowner's Insurance WIN!

A month or so ago we were having a get together for the mother in law’s 80th
birthday. Wife is leaning back on the couch in the family room and notices a
stain on the ceiling Dang. Roof leak.

We had just had some really violent storms blow through, so we figured they
were the cause of the leak. Our house is just about 20 years old, so we knew
it was close to new roof time. We were hoping it would be another year or two
before we had to replace the roof, but this looked like it was going to force
the matter. Darn.

Understand that there is quite the cottage industry using software that closely
monitors the NOAA weather radars and will use GIS to extract exact addresses
under storm tracks and then send a compiled list of those addresses to
subscribers (roofing companies.) These fine folks take that information and
canvass the neighborhoods in an attempt to sell new roofs or repairs using the
homeowner’s insurer. Basically, they inspect the roof, manage the claim with
the insurer, and have the homeowner sign an AOB (assignment of benefits) so
that they are paid directly for the work. This isn’t a bad thing necessarily,
however, you’re now locked in to this contractor, like it or not, and they’ll
get the proceeds of your insurance payout regardless of what the work costs.

Anyway, I had avoided these people despite their presence in our area. I
checked with a couple of friends who had their roofs done recently and got
referrals for a couple of contractors.

One contractor came a few weeks ago, spent about 30 minutes on the roof, gave
me a quote and said that in their opinion there was little to nothing to
warrant an insurance claim. Bummer.

A day later I was talking to my insurance agent about getting an updated quote
on my homeowner’s insurance once the roof was replaced. By bringing the roof
up to current code (hurricane requirements) I would get a significant discount
in my homeowner’s insurance. I mentioned the leak and that I was getting
quotes for a replacement. He told me I should file a claim with my insurer.
After all, what’s the worst thing that could happen, right?

So the following Tuesday I was working from home and had already scheduled
another roofing contractor to come out and give me an estimate. The insurance
adjuster said he could come the same day. That works for me….

They both showed up at the same time. Not sure if this is good or bad.

So they’re both on the roof for a good 45 minutes. The insurance adjuster
comes down and inspects the interior of the house, checks out the stain on the
ceiling, etc. He finishes up and leaves.

The contractor comes down and sits down with me. He’s got a good 15 minutes of
video on his iPad showing me all of the damage and wear on the roof. He tells
me that he spent at least 30 minutes of his time with the insurance adjuster
showing him all the issues he found. Chalk marks all over the roof, lots and
lots of notes, this guy was super thorough. He gives me a quote and heads out.

Fast forward to Thursday of this week. I get a call from the insurance
company. They’re going to replace the whole roof! Woo-hoo! I have to believe
it’s due to the efforts of the contractor that went over everything in such
detail with the insurance adjustor. You can guess who got the job.

So in 2-3 weeks I’m going to have a new, hurricane rated roof at no out of
pocket cost. Nice. And my insurance costs are going to drop about 40%, too.

We had a very similar experience several years ago - small stain on the
ceiling, call the insurance company and found a metal roofing contractor -
they both arrived the same day and went over not only the house roof, but
all five roofs on the property. ended up replacing all of them except the
hangar which got a layer of foam and paint on top of the steel. Our rates
went down considerable due to the metal roof.

Hard Red Wheat. and weads.

Speaking of OK fires - the hangar across the runway from us burned to the
ground yesterday evening - several load explosions, huge plumes of black
smoke - excitement all around. Surprisingly, the fire was contained to the
hanger and a few vehicles parked nearby. Two country fire departments
arrived and worked to contain it, then pulled what was left of the building
down and tried to prevent further fires from erupting. They left around
8:30PM, then returned after midnight to check on it.
No injuries - the owner was at work miles away when it started. No idea yet
of the cause, etc. One less Bellanca in the fleet now - - -

Re: [MBZ] Video fun times

2018-04-14 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
For occasional use like that a wicked lantern is probably the way to go. A
round wick lamp will throw way more light, something like a B or Rayo can be
had on eBay pretty cheap. Alladin lamps are the Cadillac of wick lamps and
throw the best light.A flat wick lantern like a Dietz will work but provides
pretty poor light as does a deadflame lamp. I find the "lamp oil" to smell like
burning crayons and turn solid if temps approach freezing, cut with some low
odor kerosene it's much better all around.

Whitegas lanterns tend to smell, I don't like them for indoor use. In any case
I think you're thinking of thorium which is not so much toxic as radioactive.
The fear of radioactivity is mostly unfounded, don't eat mantles. Thorium was
replaced with ytrium which, while not radioactive is quite toxic and doesn't
throw terrific light.
For camping a gas pressure appliance is the way to go, a flat wick lantern will
give something like 40 candle power, a small Coleman lantern is more like 200...

An Aladdin kerosene mantle lamp. Bright, dead quiet. We have two.

Mantles used to use thorium oxide, which is mildly radioactive. (I know I
stuffed one into a gamma counter I had once, and it definitely reacted.)
Not sure what they use now, but they're not quite as bright and emit
somewhat greener light, if I'm remembering the old ones correctly. I can't
find the gamma counter, my family might have tossed it, so I can't test
current mantles the same way.

There are Aladdin kerosene lamps that are really nice for a silent light (and
heat) source, and they have been made for decades in brass, nickel, crystal,
and you can find them on eBay.

Remove door skin. See that both motor terminals have +12V on them
normally, measured to the door frame metal. Use a test lamp, that puts a
load on it to make sure it's actually got current ability and not just
leakage. One or the other terminal is grounded to make the motor go,
depending on direction. If you don't have +12V, you have a problem. 99%
of the time it's dirty switches.

[MBZ] OT - Homeowner's Insurance WIN!

2018-04-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
