Re: [MBZ] Rebuilding injectors
Dimitry - I recently rebuilt the injectors on my '81 SD using the monarch nozzles. I am pretty happy with the results. While testing before I rebuilt the injectors I had one injector that was peeing a stream before it popped. I imagine that was causing a lot of my rough idle and excess black smoke. BTW to clean them I used some biodegradable cleaner that I had from a McParts store named Purple Power by Klean Rite. I cut it about 50% with water. Dismantled them and soaked the parts for about 30 minutes. They came pretty clean just scrubbed them with an old tooth brush. I had also purchased a brass round brush to rod out the interior surfaces of the holder but not sure that was even necessary. After scrubbing with the tooth brush I rinsed the parts off with a sprayer on the garden hose, blew them dry with compressed air then coated right away with a thick coat of WD-40 to prevent rusting. I then lapped the various surfaces as required followed by a final clean and more WD-40.Good luck on your project. Barry I went ahead and ordered the Mercedesource Monarch injector nozzles with rebuild kit and tester. I was going to get rebuilds from Rusty but decided that I was interested in learning about this whole rebuild process instead:) ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] 1982 300SD Question
Kevin - I have an 81SD and I screwed around with all that stupid valve system on top of the valve cover. If I understand its purpose is twofold, first to control the EGR system, and second to modulate the vacuum signal to the vacuum modulator on the tranny. Well on my car it seems that a BB somehow found its way into the vacuum line to the EGR valve so why control that. I finally just disconnected all that plumbing and rely on the vacuum control valve down below the ALDA to control the vacuum signal. My first to second shift is a bit firm when the tranny is cold but settles down rapidly. Actually I kinda like a slightly firm shift as I figure it tends to save the clutch pack a bit. I know it's not factory but it works for me! On another note I'm kinda exited about how the old girl is running now as I just recently rebuilt my injectors and installed new Monarch nozzles. Man I now wished that I had done that years ago. I likely would not have gone through all those broken air cleaner mounting brackets and sagging motor mounts. The engine doesn't shake near as much, and I can really notice a difference as I can make fine adjustments to the rack damper screw. I still need to do another fine adjustment to that after I get it really good and warmed up. I also have to lower the idle speed as it's a bit fast now. What I found when I tested the injectors was that all the injectors had a pretty good spray pattern when they cracked and they were still within about 10 Bar of each other but the number 3 injector would pee a bit just before and after it cracked. That must have been causing the poor running. Oh yeah, I get a lot less soot now when taking off from a light. These were the original injectors and had about 225K miles on them so they did their job. It was pretty cool too I was able to clean up and lap out all the other parts in the injector bodies and I really lucked out as I only had to change one shim for the entire set to get within 3 Bar delta P between them. It was so worth the time and trouble. Barry Also, the vacuum lines/switches on the valve cover are missing. The seller said that he took it to a shop who told him that the missing vacuum lines were the reason for the flairing, but I would think that it would shift HARD if this was the case. [MBZ] fix one thing and sumthin' else breaks
Well I spent yesterday rebuilding the injectors on my '81 300SD. The existing cracking pressures were within 10 BAR and the spray patterns weren't too bad, at least they were spraying, no threads. I did have one that wasn't closing completely and would pee a stream before and after it cracked. I used a replacement set of the Monarch nozzles. The bodies cleaned up pretty well and didn't need too much lapping to get good mating surfaces. Before the refurbishment the engine idled roughly and when adjusting the rack damper screw you either had to have it loping a bit or risk the engine dying after a cold start till things warmed up a bit. You could screw it in or out a fair range with no appreciable change. With the new nozzles, set well within the 5 BAR limit, it idles well with less noise and the rack damper screw setting was easy to adjust. A lot less black smoke on acceleration and it just seems to run with a lot less effort now. Well I took it for a drive tonite to show it off to my wife and it ran well but during the drive both the speedo and the tach quit working. I'm not sure what the correlation is between those two units. I know that they both work on a pulse but I thought the speedo gets its pulse from the tranny and the tach gets its pulse from the hall sensor on the front of the engine. Maybe some cracked foils on the instrument cluster ? Anyone have a good beginning point to start the trouble shooting? I did replace the tach amp about 13 years ago but I thought that only works with the tach not the speedo. Re: [MBZ] Hearing Loss was Re: Exhaust fell off.
Glad to accommodate you Rick, Randy. Luckily for me, my company medical plan pays 90% for aids. For about 4 months now I have had a pair of Lyric aids in my ears. These are really neat aids as they stay in your ear canals for months till the batteries die. When they die they just swap them out with new ones. Because of that you don't buy them, instead you have a subscription service. You pay by the year, about $4500, and they replace them as often as you need. They cannot be seen even if someone in looking right at your ears. It took me about a month and a half to really get used to them completely and now I hardly ever even think of them being there. You can adjust the volume or turn them off and on with a magnet. It is especially good for what I need right now as we are doing a life test on a spacecraft sensor at work 24/7 for about 3 months and I have to work the graveyard shift some days. After I get off my shift I have to sleep during the day but I can simply turn then completely off and they work like very effective ear plugs. Another benefit is that when I am wearing them my tinnitus is 95% gone. Wish they were not so expensive as I will likely retire in a couple of years and I'm not sure if I can still afford the yearly expense when I retire. Re: [MBZ] Exhaust fell off.
Dimitri - The trick is to bounce the sound energy around as much as possible without restricting the flow. Each time you bounce the sound off of something it robs a little bit more of the sound energy. That is why standard mufflers have all the baffles and tubes with holes drilled in then to bounce the sound around a bunch before exiting the muffler. I think that Rusty works with an auto parts warehouse group and there are warehouses scattered all across the country. I bet the warehouse that your muffler came from is less than 100 miles from your location, thus the one day trip to your home. Barry Thanks for the tip. Wish I knew! Somehow I got the exhaust today. Re: [MBZ] 300SD steering slop
Jamie - I believe that self adjusting is a bit of a misnomer. What happens in that later box is that there is a spring loaded plunger pushing against the working piston so if there is some slop you can't feel it. Generally the box can develop lash between the gear teeth on the working piston and the teeth on the pitman shaft as well as the relationships between the other internal parts as well. Adjusting the screw on top of the box reduces the working piston to pitman shaft lash much like moving the pinion gear closer to the ring gear in a differential to reduce lash. Some years back I was still active in the MB club. One of the really good things about our section was we regularly had a factory tech rep come in to update us on the new products and allow us to ask service questions. I did happen to ask about steering box slop and the fellow said it is very rare for the LS90 series box to wear out. He pretty much said that if one was to follow the manual and reset the running torques while replacing all the soft parts it would constitute a rebuild. And yes I remember he seemed to indicate that one had to be sure to replace the thrust washer on the pitman shaft adjusting screw as well. Without the set of special tools to hold the various assemblies while setting the running torque it would be pretty tough to those adjustments, so if adjusting the lash with the adjusting screw doesn't bring things to a situation that you can live with then probably the best thing to do is to go to the bone yard and get a steering box off a lower mileage car. They typically go for about a picture of Ben Franklin. Make sure that you center the steering box working piston if you do a swap when you go to mate the input shaft on the box to the steering shaft coupling. To make a copy of the 116 589 621 00 centering screw I just took the appropriate thread pitch bolt and turned a point on it with a lathe. Barry Its true the box is somehow self adjusting in the W126 (from 08/81, so MY 1982), but the manual still states that adjustment is possible. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Not sure if it means anything Rick but I did use anti-seize sparingly on mine about 10 years ago. Of course I haven't had the occasion to take the thing apart again yet. Re: [MBZ] Oil Cooler Lines
Rick - A couple of ideas. As has been mentioned the oil cooler line nuts screwing onto the oil cooler fittings can sometimes seize and gall the threads on the cooler fitting when you try to remove them. If the nut feels like it is starting to gall stop and whip out your trusty Dremel tool with one of the abrasive cutting disks mounted. Cut into the nut parallel to the oil line so you can help relieve the pressure on the threads. You want to weaken the nut so it will split open. You can stick a blade screwdriver into the cut and twist it a bit to open up the nut if possible. You want to go slowly as to try and not cut into the threads on the cooler fitting. The slick fix, if the threads on the cooler do happen to become compromised, is to saw off the damaged fitting on the cooler and drill and tap the cooler for a new union fitting. As I recall from others instructions, as I haven't done this myself, you can use a fitting like the one on the oil filter housing. You might find something in the archives about the process. If not in the okiebenz archives it is likely in the Ritter list archives. If you don't have access to that list archives let me know and I will search them for you. Also, when reassembling the clamp that holds the center of the oil lines at the block, assuming the 123 is like my 126 in that respect, you may find it difficult to assemble the clamp if you have secured the oil cooler hose nuts. The easy way is to just start both ends of both hoses just a few threads so everything is wiggly loose. Once you get the clamp loosely assembled you can go ahead and tighten up the hose end fittings and finally the clamp screw. Oh yeah, it seemed to me, at least on my 126, that things went a bunch easier if I supported the engine and removed the left side motor mount arm. Now it has been 8 years or more since I did this and memory being what it is if someone with more recent experience has any corrections please feel free. Re: [MBZ] Water pump or thermostat?
Curt - I'm guessing a quick check of the gage would be to have someone watch the instrument cluster and pull the connector off of the temperature gage, note the gage reaction and then ground the gage connector and see if the gage swings the opposite direction. You can do this with a cold engine and engine running or not. Likely have to have the key set to the run position. Barry It could of course be the gauge. That'll be my first thing to test. Re: [MBZ] Smug rodbender seller ...... should be about the 107

Don't ask me how I could possibly know this. :^) Was driving me nuts on a rough road. Barry The hard top makes a noise on bumps. At least I think it is the top. Re: [MBZ] Door Strike Screws
Tim - This probably isn't the problem if the latch was working before you messed with the striker but I had a problem like that once with my 107 door latch. Turned out that there was a sort of hairpin spring in the door latch assy. That broke in half and didn't allow the latch to cock or reset to the ready to latch position. As I recall I could manually re-cock the latch and then it would close normally. You could try that as a check. The bad part is that the spring is only available as part of the latch assy. Barry I can't get the second latching on my striker no matter how I position it. I get the first latch no problem but even at the outermost position the latch part doesn't flip the second time. Re: [MBZ] OT - National Defense Auth Act
I'm not a fan of McCain but there seems to be a lot of rumors flying about on this disaster and many seem like peoples view of what happened may have a political slant. I wasn't there and can't really say one way or another. I did watch the videos that Grant posted and read some of the comments that were posted after one video. This one fellow did not seem to be trying to make a political point but seemed to be from a person of experience trying dispel rumors with fact. It seemed reasonable to me. Here's his explanation.you decide Did He Start The USS Forrestal Fire? Surviving crewmen and those who investigated the Forrestal fire case reported that McCain deliberately 'wet-started' his A-4E Skyhawk to shake up the guy in the F-4 Phantom behind his plane. First, let me state that I am not a McCain supporter. I voted for Ron Paul in our primaries. Second, I am a Navy veteran, and I worked on the flight deck of the USS Enterprise during 3 vietnam deployments in 1966, 67 and 68. I know about flight deck operations through extensive first-hand experience. You ask the question, Did [McCain] start the USS Forrestal fire? I'll answer: Absolutely, positively not! The theory that a wet start triggered the Zuni missile is sound. But the notion that anybody deliberately wet starts his aircraft is preposterous. Most often a wet start results from turning the turbine over too slowly to start the engine. This can result from an error by the flight deck crewman who is operating the starter. Yes, it is a flight deck crewman who operates the starter on an A4. A4s (at least of that era) did not have an internal starter. The crewman manually inserted an air-driven starter into the side of the aircraft. Both the pilot and the starter crewman followed the signals given by the plane captain--who is an other flight deck crewman. The starter turns when a member of the flight deck power crew makes the connection on the end of a remote control cable. That is when the aircraft engine is turned. It takes fifteen to twenty seconds to build up sufficient RPMs to start the engine. If the start is interrupted for any reason (and there are many why it can happen) the engine will spool down in a flooded condition. At that point, a wet start is almost inevitable when another attempt to start the engine is made. It is highly likely that this is what happened on Forrestal. It is impossible that McCain's jet started the fire. If you look at the video, you will see that the exhaust of his jet is pointed out over the side of the ship. There was no plane parked behind him. The missile that struck McCain's plane came from 90 degrees, off his starboard wing. So please, stop this preposterous slander. Now as to what he did after the fire started, aside from receiving severe burns, you make the absurd criticism that he went below decks while his shipmates were dying. Sickbay is below decks. That is where you go when you are injured. Pilots do not fight flight deck fires. There are crewman who have the special training and equipment who do that. It would be stupid for anyone not properly trained and equipped to hang around and be in the way. Grow up. Keep your criticisms to fact. McCain's politics are far left of the Republican mainstream, and even further left of good sense. You don't need to try to beat him with lies. Defeat him with ideas! John McCain, liberal that he is, deserves the respect of all of us--most especially those who weren't there when the Vietnam War was going on. I was there, and I saw pilots put their lives on the line every day, every time they climbed into their planes. If you haven't done that, then you can say nothing that will impress me. [MBZ] Tight pistons rear caliper GMC 1500 No M/B
I have a '99 Sierra 1500 and I noticed that I got pretty much all the use of the rear brake pads so I went to replace the pads. Caliper pistons were pretty far out so used a c clamp to retract them so the new pads would fit. Seemed like it took way too much pressure with the clamp to retract the pistons into the caliper. I figured a seized piston and popped one out. New style phenolic piston in an aluminum Caliper body. Bore and piston Don't look that bad. Cleaned both up, even took a little 600 paper to the bore and outer circumference of piston. Piston will only go half way into the bore then it stops. This is without the piston seal in its groove. Too little clearance piston to bore. What's going on here? Bore and piston look clean but piston is still very tight in the bore. AFAIK these are original parts from the factory. Re: [MBZ] OT: mystery deepens in Air France crash
Peter - With as sophisticated as the rest of the airplanes are these days it seems outrageous to me to even have to think about having a large commercial aircraft to be put at risk by an iced up pitot tube. How about having 4 or 5 of the things with maybe two at a time out and available and the others retracted back for safe harbor in the airframe for some RR. As an alternative it would seem as simple as directing some nice warm compressor bleed air via a nozzle appropriately aimed at the pitots. Yes I imagine the warm air will introduce some error but it would seem that some error would be better than no data. With the capabilities that exist today and the typical layers of redundancy in other areas it just seems inexcusable to lose a airplane due to things as critical as having clogged pitots or static ports. Barry Personally, I question the design philosophy here -- if the plane cannot be flown without accurate air speed signal, you'd damned well better insure that you NEVER lose that data stream. [MBZ] 617 dying at idle
I've been having a problem on my '81 SD of the engine dying when trying to back out of the garage after a cold start. This is a So. Cal. Cold start meaning probably never less than 50 deg. I'm sure that is already halfway warmed up to some of you folks :^) It starts normally after a single glow sequence and idles well at about 800 turns per the tach. If you now put it in reverse the idle drops a bit and as soon as you turn the wheels a bit the extra load kills the engine. Turning off the HVAC also helps so it appears that any load is enough to load the engine enough that it dies. After it is fully warmed up there is no such issue. Suggestions to figure out what is causing this are: Check glow plugs...all at .6 ohms Check valve lash...a couple of exh. a little tight but readjusted all anyway Retarded timing. haven't tried that yet Rack damper screw too tight leaning out inj. pump at idle... Well I was working on that right adjustment now and things don't seem to be going exactly as I had expected. I had upgraded to the new gold damper screw some years back and had adjusted per directions at that time. Now when I try to perform the adjustment things are different. My expectation is that when I back the screw out and take the spring force off of the rack, the engine should begin to lope. As I remember the adjustment procedure is to then screw it in till the loping just stops. Well in this case even though I back the screw out 3 or 4 turns, it never lopes. The first time I tried to perform the adjustment the engine was at operating temperature and it was a bit uncomfortable to fiddle with the adjustment very much. This time the engine is effectively cold. I went ahead and removed the screw to make sure it was ok and it does appear to be fine. I can leave it backed out till I'm sure that the screw is not touching the rack and it never lopes, in fact it doesn't seem to affect the idles much at all. Does someone know if the engine must be fully warm before the loping would occur? Suggestions? OBTW, I did try and load the still cold engine with the screw not touching the rack and it doesn't die now so that was likely the problem in the first place. Now I have no idea how to adjust the rack damper screw. What is the cause of the loping anyway. One fellow suggested it was the pulsing of the primer pump piston that sets up the oscillations. Re: [MBZ] 617 dying at idle
Thanks for your reply Mitch. Actually as I said backing off the rack damper screw did seem to cure the problem, it's just now I'm not sure how to adjust the screw as it doesn't seem to matter where I set it. Hoping there isn't a problem with the injection pump. Barry I suspect that perfect cylinder balance at idle would make it harder to stall. Re: [MBZ] 617 dying at idle
Peter - I guess that might help. I have been running 15-40 Delo 400 in it with 2000-3000 mile oil changes. It was rated pretty good for handling the soot. Car rarely is driven over 5000 per year so I go for the time rather than miles and it's mostly around town miles. Ran some diesel purge through it about 2000 miles ago. Made no noticeable difference. I need to find somewhere that I can see cutaways or sections and such of the injection pump so I can understand just what is happening inside there. All the CD has on it is one lateral section and some cartoons explaining function. I'd like to see more sections and an exploded view. Any good leads or sites that you know of? Barry I would suggest a Diesel Purge treatment. I suspect the governor is sticky -- a fill of Mobil 1 oil if you are not using it wouldn't hurt, either. Re: [MBZ] Garbage Disposers Banned
Jerry - I don't know about NYC laws but I did manage apartments for 18 years in So. California and during that time, believe me, I fixed a lot of clogged drains due to GD clogs. GD manufactures will tell you how wonderful their machines are and that they can grind most anything. Well they may be great but that doesn't mean the waste line can handle the resultant debris. Here is the real scoop from both many plumbers and the school of hard knocks. When washing dishes pour as much grease or oils as possible into a can or jar, let it cool and solidify and dispose. Scrape as much food waste from plates etc. as possible with your fingers or a spatula and put that in the garbage. Any material left on the dish can go down the GD as you rinse it off. That is what GD's were really meant to do. They weren't meant to be food processors or leaf mulchers. As they grind they must have the cold water running, never the hot, and after they finish grinding run the cold water in copious amounts to help flush the debris for at least the count of 10. I would even count to ten for them as I was explaining the rules. These simple rules will alleviate almost all GD caused waste line plugs. These were my house rules that renters had to sign up to at the commencement of tenancy. If the renter broke those rules and the debris in the drain bore evidence of that, then they paid the bill to unclog the drain. Put it in your house rules as an addendum and serve it as a legal notice. When they know that they are responsible for paying the bill, it is amazing how the problems diminish. If someone insists in not following these rules, and you are foolish enough to let them do their own thing, then at least follow these two basic rules. Never ever put any fibrous vegetable down any GD. Examples: celery stalks. artichokes, asparagus, etc. If they want to put hot grease or oil down the drain they must have the cold water running never the hot and again after they finish grinding run the cold water in copious amounts to help flush the debris for at least the count of 10. One other thing that can save lots of bathtub clogs, or kitchen sink if they wash their hair in the sink, is to buy them drain covers with small holes to catch the hair. This is especially true with folks with long hair and sorry if I sound racist or cruel, but especially folks that have long coarse black hair or if they are the in the later stages of chemotherapy when the hair comes out in large quantities. Follow all these rules and you will thank me. Being booked solid for the next 24 hours or so, I call a plumber to take care of the problem. He calls after doing the job to say that sweet potato peelings were run through the garbage disposer (GD) and bunched up in the J bend causing the blockage. Re: [MBZ] Brake Lines
I agree with Mitch that a proper flare connected with the proper fitting should be perfectly reliable. Here is a possible alternative. We use these Swagelok fittings all the time on both pressure and vacuum systems in many aerospace applications. I found fittings here for 6mm but not sure just what size brake lines are. The particular fitting I found here is stainless steel but they are also available in brass and carbon steel. These fittings do tend to be a bit pricey. I would personally have no issues using one of these but I would check first with an application engineer before I used one for your purpose just to make sure. These fitting are different than most common compression fittings in that they distort the end of the tubing a bit so that the fitting cannot slip off. Re: [MBZ] F-16 Dead-Stick Landing.......
Allan - Just a guess, but hydrazine is used as the fuel for spacecraft(satellites)because it can be passed over a heated catalyst bed to change it from a liquid fuel to copious amounts of what you might call coal gas. In the spacecraft this rapidly expanding gas exits the thruster through a rocket nozzle(a divergent duct)which produces the thrust to move the spacecraft as desired. As an emergency fuel for the airplane this would provide a means to spin up the emergency turbine without a fuel control or igniters which are much more complex systems than a simple propellant valve, basically a solenoid valve, and an otherwise inert catalyst bed with a simple battery powered heater. So you turn on the heater, simple switch, then you open the propellant valve, simple switch, and you have an unlimited source for gas to drive the emergency generator turbine till you run out of hydrazine. Pretty simple and not much chance that it would fail. Re: [MBZ] tail heavy
Actually I knew the guy that first did that. This had to be in the mid 70's. His name was Duncan Blundrett and he was the service manager at Bill Yates VW/Porsche in San Juan Capistrano, CA. As I remember the first car to receive this conversion was one of a couple of 912's that Duncan got for a song from the insurance company. Someone had stolen them and pulled out the engines, most likely to put in a v-dub. I think that the Toronado engine was also out of an insurance settlement from a wrecked car. The neat part of this kit, yes Duncan was selling kits for the conversion for a while, was that there was no cutting involved. I heard him tell folks more than once that he could pull out the Olds mill/transaxle and have it back to stock Porsche in a matter of hours. The only thing you would notice standing next to the car was the radiator showing through the engine hood and the one large exhaust pipe out the back that sure didn't sound like a 6 cyl. Boxer engine. Also Duncan bought a stack of large suitcases and glued them together then hollowed out the bottom of the stack to use as an engine cover so it would be a real sleeper otherwise you would have seen the engine in the back seat. I never did get to go for a ride in the car but I was told that it was somewhat limited because it was geared for a big heavy car. If you stomped on it from a start it would pin you back in the seat like a drag racer but the top speed was very limited as the gearing would cause the engine to redline way before you ran out of horsepower. That was the one Porsche body. The other one he had a pretty much stock 140HP Corvair engine in it. Crown manufacturing made the conversion kit for that as I recall. The only rub was that the Corvair engine ran the wrong direction for the Porsche so you had to flip the pistons over on the con rods and change the distributor drive gear on the camshaft and the distributor drive shaft so it could run backwards. I think the stock cam still worked ok with the new gear but not sure. I had also heard that Duncan had varying parts of a couple of M/B gullwings, though I never saw them. Re: [MBZ] W126 Euro headlights?
Randy - Hadn't thought about that. You're probably right. Of course on my '81 cars the stock lighting is all with regular fuses. The stock configuration is such that there is one fuse for each bulb so if you lost one low beam fuse you would still have the other low beam and both high beams. I'm trying to remember the way I wired the relay kit and I believe that there are now just two 60A fuses. One for Lows and one for Highs. So if you did lose one fuse you would still have either both lows or both highs. If I was to do it over again I think I would go to my local McParts and buy the new style fuses holders with a pigtail that use the double spade connection type fuses that they use on all the new cars. I guess it would be good as well to go back to using 4 fuses or the circuit breakers too. Barry I keep seeing references to fuses and headlights. Is that not considered poor practice? My recollection is that one should use circuit breakers for headlights in the hope that they will re-set themselves if there is a momentary problem and not just burn out and leave you in the dark. [MBZ] W126 Euro headlights?
Alex - Rusty has good deals alright. Unless you must have the look of the full Euro headlights you may want to take a less expensive approach and get the same lighting ability. I have an '81 SD and as we were getting older we found it was harder to see the road at night. I ended up getting the 200mm X 142mm Ciebe lights with the parking lights from Dan Stern. Maybe Rusty has them too. To enhance the effect I went ahead and installed heavier wiring and the relay kit so that I can run the 100/130 Narva H4 bulbs. Man, what a difference. Way worth it. In fact my wife demanded that I change out the 4 bugeyes on our 107 SL and get the euros for that too. On that car we did go for the full Euros by Bosch. With bulbs relay kit wiring etc. I am into that project for about $750, but those make a major styling difference on the 107. The only problem I have had to date is the high current fuse holders that Stern provides in the relay kit are prone to moisture, but that was only a problem on the SL installation as they were out in the open in the engine bay were they were subjected to the elements. They now have shrink sleeving around them and that should take care of the problem and still pretty easy to get to the fuses if I have to. On the 126 installation I had enough spare room in the fuse box that I was able to hide the fuse holders and the ice cube relays inside the fuse box. I believe the 126 parts cost was like $275 for everything including the heavier wire. I was able to look around a bit and find the right color wire to match the factory colors pretty close. The euros take a little bit to get use to with the sharp cutoff but once you are use to them...well... I tried to find some for my truck. They are easy to aim too. I can take some pictures for you of the installation if you like. It took me about a weekend to install the system but I took my time too but I am fairly comfortable with doing wiring. If you don't want to tackle a wiring project like that just run the standard watt bulbs and it is a bolt in. You really can't safely run the higher watt bulbs with the standard 16ga wire as it is only good for 10 to 12 amps where the 130s on high beams are drawing 20 plus watts. You really need at least #12 wire for that load. Oh yeah, the city lights are pretty cool sometimes too. I have never had to replace a H4 bulb yet. Re: [MBZ] made up statistics
Actually you are dead wrong Pete. Speed is just what is needed in a lot of cases. I suffer from moderate ADD myself and have done a fair amount of reading research on it. There is a of misinformation out there about ADD/ADHD and a lot of misdiagnosis as well, especially when you get the various school districts involved. To get a really accurate diagnosis you need a psychiatrist and particularly one that specializes in the disease. You should even hear the nonsense my family doctor spouted when I told him that I have it. Even when I further told him I was diagnosed by a prominent Psychiatrist in the field he was still skeptical. ADD is believed to be caused by poorly formed synapses during the time in the womb. In simple terms what happens in the disease is that the brain goes faster than the body can respond. How would you correct that? Speed, because the overall effect is to try and speed the body up to match the brain. This only works in some folks though. I tried the Adderall and my wife said she didn't like what it did to my temperament so we stopped. I didn't seem to get much relief with it anyway. If someone wants get some really good insight on ADD they should read the series of books by DRs Halloway and Ratey especially Driven to Distraction and Delivered from distraction among others. It can overcome a lot of the erroneous ideas and misinformation about this. Barry Just my opinion. Re: [MBZ] W107 resale values are in the tank
Don - Does sound a bit excessive but you may be surprised what they will bring in the right market. There is a fellow in Wilmington, CA who's business is buying at auction and parting out 107s. [MBZ] could I have a dual registry?
Ok here is one for all you computer pros. This seems to have happened after a recent automatic windows or possibly Java etc. update session. Toshiba laptop running XP home SP3. Outlook (2000) would open and close right away. Sometimes would open and stay open after a few tries, sometimes it would only open in safe mode. Tried all the online suggested fixes to no avail but figured that it may be a recent upgrade of some TSR type program so I went in and started deleting all non-essential programs. That seemed to fix the outlook problem but now I have a registry problem. Error message is... C21B registry file failure The registry cannot load the hive(file):\systemroot\system32\config\software or its log or alternate is corrupt absent or not writable. I looked at the online help fixes but it seems that most anything that I would do would require me to reload all my software. I that case I would rather just reformat and start from scratch. The thing with what has happened that is weird is that if the computer has been off for a few minutes and you start it then it will proceed to the fault point, display the error message then go to a screen that reports the error and gives you choices in trying to reboot. If you choose normal boot it will repeat this behavior. If you pick safe mode it will boot to safe. Now here is the weird part. At this point if you restart the computer it will boot normally, though rather laboriously, and it tends to operate rather sluggishly from that point on. It would seem that the correct software config file must be there somewhere but there is something that is confusing the boot process. Available software files in the root at C:\windows\config\ are: software 34Mb 10/3/2010 software log 1Kb 10/3/2010 software.rrr 27Mb 10/3/2010 software.sav 388Kb 11/25/2002 any ideas? Fred - Sound to me like the cold engine sensor is not working. Did you get the pdf file that I sent you (07.3-112.pdf 2Mb) early Saturday AM? It was the file that Jamie was referring to. Not sure how your SL is set up but on my '81 there is a temperature sensor in the back of the right cylinder Head that is used by the idle speed computer to give you fast idle when the engine is cold. When the engine warms up the sensor (closes?) and sends a signal to the idle speed computer so that the idle speed then drops to normal. As I recall the test to see if that circuit and sensor is working was just to pull off the connector from the sensor. That should equal fast idle. Short the connector should drop to warm idle. Don't trust my memory read the pdf before you try that. Also I think I remember seeing that in the later 116 engines they used oil temperature instead of water temp. but that would be in the pdf. Let me know if you didn't get the file and I'll try to send it again. I can break it into 2 smaller files if your mail server choked on the 2Mb file. Re: [MBZ] Tightening Nets on the Back of Front Seats of 83 300SD
Tom - You very well may find it in the archives. I'm assuming your '83 126 is similar to my '81. The problem is that the elastic is gone from the top horizontal part of the net. It is fairly easy to replace but on my car it had seen many years of direct sunlight and a lot of the plastic parts have become very brittle. With this in mind, you have to remove the back from the seat that needs to have the net repaired. You do that by removing the 2 screws at the base of the seat back and pulling down on the seat back till it comes free. You should now have access to the screws that hold the framework for the net in place. This is where I had a bit of a problem as by the time I had removed the screws from the brackets on my seatback the frames for the nets had cracked. I was able to epoxy them back together but try to be as careful as you can when you remove the screws. I was able to find a very good match for the elastic material at a local REI store, a camping/sporting goods store. I found the elastic material for a couple of bucks or so in the rock climbing equipment section with the climbing ropes and such. A quick search showed the closest REI to you to be in Georgia, a bit of a trek for some stretch material but I'm guessing you may find a similar type store nearer to you. You might even try at a sewing and yardage store. Replacement from this point is fairly obvious. My nets are still nice and tight and that was about 4 years ago. I just took a quick look at the EPC to see if the net is available as a separate part. It appears that it comes with the plastic frame and the part number is 126 810 02 49. I'm sure Rusty can give you a price. Barry I am assuming that the instructions for tightening up the nets on the back of a front seat should be somewhat generic. The car is my 83 300SD. Just working on some little things to improve the appearance inside. Re: [MBZ] Steering box slop
Rich - Play can be from a couple of places and the box may be one of those. If you have checked the rest of the system per 46-110 of the manual and all those sources of wear are tight then you very well may have play in the box. David was almost correct in that the later 126s have automatic compensation for play incorporated in their design but this is only effective then the box is in the centered position. It is nothing more than a spring loaded plunger pushing on the working piston that more or less hides any play that exists when you are driving down a straight road. There is an adjustment that may help you and that is a method to adjust out play by adjusting the relationship between the teeth on the pitman shaft and the teeth on the working piston. This however can be overdone which will accelerate the wear on those teeth and set you up for play than cannot be adjusted out. The procedure is laid out in 46-480 of the manual and incorporates a few special tools which you most likely will not have. A number of folks have come pretty close to the proper relationship just by feel. Don't try and take all the play out or you may cause the wear I mentioned, just try and get the over center feel. If you care to give it a try I suggest that you somehow mark the position of the adjusting screw so that, if it just doesn't feel right you can reset it to where you originally found it. Remember CCW to tighten. As it turns out I just finished replacing my steering gearbox with a good used donor unit. Mine is an '81 SD 126.120 and it did not have the compensation for play so for the replacement I chose a later box that does have it. When I got my car it was obvious that there was a problem as the adjustment I mentioned did absolutely nothing. When I changed the ATF in the power steering wheel it was totally filthy. Yuck! I always had wear, slop, right at the service limit but I just lived with it. Just recently the box developed an oil leak and needed to be re-sealed. When I broke it down the problem was obvious, it had been adjusted too tight and had really advanced wear on the teeth I mentioned. The pitman shaft and working piston are sold as a set and that set was like $400. A rebuilt is typically $500 and if you go that route make sure the mechanic that does it really knows what is doing or you will not be happy. New ones you ask...like $3K. The going wrecking yard price is $100. The one I got was a bonus as it looked like the box had been recently re-sealed. I reached down and twisted the shaft at the steering box, and the box is what is loose, and is sorta rattling a bit. I take that to mean the steering box either needs to be adjusted to tighten it up a bit (through the magic procedure) or replaced with one that is not rattly and loose. Re: [MBZ] OT: Muffler design?
Curt - Manfred is correct. The downside of not using a properly designed exhaust system is that you may end up with a destructively lean mixture at full throttle, or you may just have reduced power. While the reduced power is likely not a big thing, the excessively lean condition can be. With whatever system you end up with be sure to take a spark plug reading after a short full power run to determine if the mixture is within range. If it is just a bit lean you can likely either adjust the high speed needle valve or install a bigger main jet depending on the design of the carburetor. If it blubbers it may be too rich and the appropriate adjustments can be performed to correct that instance as well. The best system for a 2 stroke is what is called an expansion chamber. It consists of a divergent pipe, like a megaphone, and then a convergent pipe, just the opposite, followed by a small length of a small dia. straight pipe. The length and diameters of each of these sections are somewhat critical but the cones can be ovaled a bit and pipes curved usually without too much loss of efficiency. The unfortunate part of these expansion chambers if they can be quite noisy. If you have ever witnessed a 2 stroke racing motorcycle you will know what I mean. The factory muffler is likely designed to try and emulate the characteristics of the expansion chamber in a very small package. Very hard to do without some fluid flow type engineers and a dynamometer. Your best bet may just be to try and make a unit that is quiet as possible, take plug reading and adjust the mixture, and live with any power loss. The secret to making a quiet muffler is to rob the sound energy from the exhaust pulse. This is done by trying to bounce the sound off as many surfaces as possible. Often a gun type silencer will do pretty well which is basically a pipe. With a bunch of holes drilled in it, surrounded by a chamber stuffed with sound deadening material like steel wool or rolled fiberglass. If you use this design the deadening material will burn out over time and will need to be replenished. A more longer life method may be a series of chambers with internal baffles that have holes with the edges deformed like a simple cheese grater. You may have seen this used in automotive mufflers. By the way, have you looked to see if there is a performance aftermarket exhaust system for your machine? There may one available that is not too noisy. Ebay? If you would like to learn more about 2 stroke expansion chambers and their theory I just Googled two stroke cycle expansion chamber design and got a number of interesting hits including some possible chamber design parameter computer programs. Wikipedia had an excellent animated discussion on how expansion chambers work. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansion_chamber I hope some of this helps out. The two stroke muffler is usually an integral part of the power band tuning of the motor, much more so than with a four stroke. Try cutting open the original muffler and see if any of the pipe and baffling are still in there to see if you might be able to copy it in the new muffler. The closer you can get to the original the better. Even the distance between the head and the muffler is part of the tuning. Manfred Date: Sun, 17 Jan 2010 19:37:07 -0800 (PST) From: Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com Anybody know anything about muffler design? I've got an old snowmobile that the muffler is NLA and a strange enough design that nothing else will work right. I bought a muffler from a Cub Cadet tractor and its okay but still too loud. It looks like that muffler is just a can with a tube that has holes punched all around it inside. I *think* quiet mufflers generally have some kind of fiberglass packing inside. I've got to cut this muffler anyway since its too long, I was thinking that since I had to have it open I'd stuff some fiberglass in (either the pink stuff or some mat) around the outside and see if that helped any. I don't think it could make it any worse... I've also thought about welding in more baffles but theres not that much space, its about the size of a coffee can. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives
Re: [MBZ] OT: Muffler design?
Randy - Hey, I did say it would burn out over time. Actually when I have seen that used in the past, it was the real coarse stuff not the hair fine stuff. The fine stuff doesn’t work as well as the coarse stiff anyway as it just seems to block the exhaust flow where the coarse stuff lets the sound get trapped in it and bounce around thereby robbing the sound pulse of its' energy. Also the silencer with the steel wool located was at the end of the stinger on the expansion chamber. The temperature at that point is quite a bit lower than the fire coming out of the exhaust port. Curt - In your situation, I'm guessing that the muffler may be rather close to the exhaust port. The steel, even the coarse stuff may heat up and oxidize rather quickly. I was thinking that maybe you could find a machine shop that is turning some stainless parts on a lathe and retrieve some of those pigtail turnings. They may be heavy enough not to heat up as much as fine strand and they would not oxidize as readily as a steel part. Even fiberglass close to the exhaust port would not last long. I imagine that rotary engines have a pretty hot exhaust stream much like a 2 stroke. On a 4 stroke, the exhaust valve ends up taking some of the heat from the exhaust stream and transferring it to the head, so things are a bit cooler. Barry, Great info! I knew a little of that but you put it into context. My problem is that this is such an oddball machine. '71 Arctic Cat Panther 303 Rotary... They used the 303 from '69 through around '72. This was the dawn of race sleds and the 303 was NOT one of those ;) Theres extremely limited space to put the pipe in and any performance tuning has already been ruined because the exhaust port faces almost straight down. Theres a pipe from it around to the front (maybe 12) which then takes a left turn (the engine is about the same diameter as a 5 gallon bucket but only about 2/3 as tall. If it were a bucket it'd be lying on its side in the sled) and enters the muffler which is about the size and shape of a coffee can in the center of one end of the can. At the other end of the can another pipe comes out making another left turn. It goes down about 16 and makes a turn stright down and out. So as you can see this is about the WORST design possible... On a positive note I don't think a rotary engine requires much exhaust gas scavenging since the intake and exhaust ports don't overlap like they do in a piston engine... I like the steel wool idea, I think I'm going to try to end up with a combo approach, baffles and steel wool... -Curt Date: Mon, 18 Jan 2010 08:38:04 -0800 From: Barry Stark barryst...@verizon.net To: 'Mercedes Discussion List' mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Muffler design? Re: [MBZ] 380SL chain tensioner
Peter - There is a drilling jig that one must use to keep the holes in the proper alignment when machining for the inserts on these engines. What makes the job more difficult is the alloy with the silicon. It makes for a good wearing surface but it is really tough on drills and taps as well. Timeserts are also available in stainless, I'm not sure what MB calls for in this application. An even more superior insert is the Keensert. We use these a great deal on the parts we design for spacecraft, but the downside is more machining costs, more space around the hole for the flange, and of course cost. Barry What you describe {Threads not perpendicular to the milled surface} would be a night mare to repair, requiring a threaded insert. Our shop is a foundry and machine shop. We pour many aluminum castings and machine them. Many of the aerospace parts have the threads helicoiled. Some are helicoiled because the are serviced in the field. The Helicoil, having a stainless steel thread makes a superior joint in all ways. Many parts have repair procedures to salvage damaged threads. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Found the lost key on a 300SD, 1981
Tim - Interesting you should ask as I just had a locksmith make a duplicate key for my '81 SD today in Long Beach CA. The machine appeared to be a computerized CNC like milling machine. My understanding from my Indy is that they insert the key to be copied into the machine and it reads out the key code and cuts from that rather than copying by tracing the profile. Obviously more than just a clone copy as the locksmith asked what year and model the key was from, fed some information into a computer screen and then inserted the blank into the milling machine. It made 2 passes per cut, rough and finish, and required that the key be removed and reinserted for each of the 4 cut edges. Whole process took about 5 minutes and the new key looked almost better than the key being duplicated which by the way, was a little used spare key purchased a couple of years ago from the dealer that ordered it from MBNA. Cost was $35. I looked at the newly cut blank, which virtually identical to the genuine key minus, of course, the star stamped on the shaft near the head and noticed it was made in Italy. Barry Which brings us to another question, is there a way to generate a key code from an actual key? Or is a tumbler the only way? I don't have this problem yet, just curious. :) Thanks, -Tim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Found the lost key on a 300SD, 1981
Don - I never said it was a great value or even equal to the dealer supplied key. I believe the question that I was responding to was about machines using the key code to produce the key. I was surprised that a sophisticated key duplicating machine like this even existed in a neighborhood locksmith's shop. It looked like it was a pretty pricey machine. To answer another lister's question, it does appear to be brass and I know about the steel vs brass argument's think someone said something about locksmiths not being able to get steel blanks and surely the brass is much easier on the cutting tool in the machine but I would imagine that it would cut steel blanks as well. In this case my wife had just somehow lost a set of keys. As a matter of personal policy we always keep 3 copies of the keys for each of our cars. This key will be a backup to the spare and if used at all it would be used very infrequently so I didn't even give the material a second thought. The primary use key and the backup key for this car are both dealer supplied steel keys. Sounds like your dealer's prices are reasonable. The dealer supplied key that I mentioned that was being copied cost me $48 about three years ago. Since the value of the dollar has slipped in the last little while, the local parts prices for these cars has gone up surprisingly high. Don't ever let anybody tell you it is cheap to live in So. Calif. With the current crop of tax and spend politicians we now have in office here...well, let's just say that I can now order parts from Rusty and the sales tax savings will likely more than pay for the shipping charges. Re: [MBZ] Dash console dead - 1981 300SD
Bill - After a quick review of the ECM, The power for most of the cluster, but not the clock, comes from fuse F12. Have you replaced that fuse? If that doesn't help remove the cluster and probe socket #7 of the round connector for 12V. The key needs to be in the run or start position for F12 to get power. The ground for the cluster is at G102 which is one of the many brown wires tied to the instrument panel(lower center of the cluster cutout) you see when you remove the cluster. You might test the cluster ground. For the portion of the cluster fed by F12 it should be at socket 3 of the same round connector. It should read very low ohms to the G102 or any good ground point. Not sure if someone has already suggested this as I have been behind the power curve for the last little while on my E-mails. Re: [MBZ] Dash console dead - 1981 300SD
Bill - As Marshall used to say, it is best just to replace them. If you get continuity it is a good sign and probably means it is ok but you can get continuity across a hair fine wire but it won't carry any current. If you must keep the fuse take it out and make sure the conductor isn't cracked and clean off some of the oxidation. The best test is to measure voltage at the connector. FWIW, on my '81 SL I did once have what another lister mentioned, that being a crack in the printed circuit board on the back of the cluster. It was very hard to see. You had to probe each circuit with an ohmmeter and look for the large ohmic reading. It was easily repaired by soldering a small length of wire across the crack to bridge it. Barry Thank you Barry. I gave them a quick look earlier, but I will pay special attention to 12. If I show continuity from the top to the bottom of the fuse holder I would assume the fuse is good? Look at the cover on the front behind the clutch. It will have 4 bolts. Between 2 of the bolts will be an embossed X. This is the position of the oil hole to lube the front bearing. The R4 compressor was originally designed for GM cars with the compressor mounted on top of the engine. The X and the inlet/outlet port is UP. Mercedes used the compressor but rotated it 180 degrees and mounted it under the engine. This put the ports DOWN. Then they rotated the front cover so the X is UP. Oil does NOT flow uphill. If you use an aftermarket compressor with the X down, you will starve the front bearing of oil. It may last a week, a month, 6 months depends on the quality of the bearing they put in. Re: [MBZ] W123/126 steerinb box rebuild?
Rolf - I think it depends on why you want to rebuild the steering gear. If it is just leaking then you can replace most of the soft parts with pretty good results, but if you have excessive play, then it might be pretty tough to do a proper rebuild and get the clearances correct without having all the special tools to hold the various assemblies while you are establishing the necessary running torques. Take a look at the section in the manual (46-220) about rebuilding the steering gearbox and I think that you will see what I mean. Most folks just go down to the bone yard and buy a good used box for about $100. If you go to a do it yourself yard you may get one even cheaper and then you can test the play as well before pulling the box. What would make you want or need to go back to XP? And would there ever be a reason to move from Windows 7 to Vista? Re: [MBZ] fake-o
Right, but really raised my eyebrows is the claim that they added 4.3 tons of ballast. Now any thinking person would think that much weight would totally bottom out the suspension in the car but if you look there is still plenty of room in the fender wells. Also, though I know that Michelins are good tires and all, even with 60-70 PSI of air pressure, let's add it up a bit. 4.3 short tons =8600lbs + 5000 for the car...add it all up you get 13,600...now divide by 4 gives us 3,400 lbs of load per tire. Wouldn't you think that even at that air pressure with that weight it may tend to flatten the tires just a little bit? I bet the only sandbag that had any sand in it was the one he put in the car. The rest...likely more Styrofoam pellets. Re: [MBZ] methanol........the fuel of the future from the past
We had a chiller that used Methanol to get down to very low temperatures. When our Health Safety folks found out that we had it they set down some very strict rules when handling the Methanol or just an open container in the room. We always had to be wearing a respirator, face shield, long sleeve gloves and a rubber apron. On the event of a spill over a few ounces the lab must be cleared immediately and security called. The reason that it causes blindness is it attacks and destroys the optic nerve. I seem to remember this process taking some time and I think they said it was one of those chemicals that your body has trouble getting rid of, i.e. it tends to build up over time to get to the strength required to do the damage. This was of course for absorption and inhalation not ingestion that will make you quite ill right away. The other nasty thing about using any alcohol as a fuel is that if you happen to have a fire, the flames are very hard to see. It was enough to scare our management. We got rid of the Methanol and went to Fluorinert instead. Way more expensive but much safer. Barry I'm not certain, but methanol as a fuel would probably be nearly pure, and ingesting even a few ml could be enough to cause serious problems such as blindness. I don't think drinking a few ml of diesel fuel would be good for you, but probably would not cause you any long term problems either. Also methanol can be absorbed in toxic amounts through the skin, a problem for anyone who is used to using fuel as a general purpose cleaning fluid. Re: [MBZ] Ethanol
Scott - It has been a few years since I have worked on many of those pumper carbs but as far as adjustments to the needle and seat, the parts that you would call the float valve in a float type carb, when you have it assembled to the point that you can view the needle seat relationship, the lever that bears on the needle should typically be parallel to the body of the carb. The last time I fixed a chain saw that had been sitting till the gas turned, the problem was simply that needle was stuck closed by varnish. A good cleaning and it worked fine. Sometimes the diaphragms just get dried out and crack. Gotta make sure there are no perforations or tears. You also need to make sure that the hoses are good or they may be sucking air. The reason that these carbs are often referred to as pumper carbs on the 2 strokes is that they have an extra diaphragm that uses a pulse from crankcase pressure to act as a fuel pump. Can't have any leaking gaskets. You need to make sure that you have cleaned the passages to the high speed and idle fuel circuits as well. Screw those adjustment screws in all the way making note of how many turns. Don't force the adjustment screws, just lightly bottom them. After you have verified clean passages and reassembled, open the two screws about the same place and add about a half a turn more open and final adjust after the engine is running. BTW, you don't really want to run 2 stroke engines out of pre-mix fuel in an attempt to empty the carb because the oil is in the fuel so you are running the engine out of lube as well. You'll probably never get all the fuel out of a diaphragm carb anyway, the engine will starve and quit before that happens. Barry On engines with a fuel shut-off (like my generator and lawn vac) I try to run the carb dry between uses and that helps too. On the other hand, I've never fixed a diaphragm-type carb (like on chain saw or blower) permanently despite several attempts; these may require special tools to set the diaphragm or maybe I needed to actually replace parts. Does anyone know the trick for these diaphragm carbs? Re: [MBZ] cloudy headlight lenses
Dwight - I read what Don recommended and I decided to do a search to see what is out there. I found these three videos, I'm sure there must be more, but these show 3 different ways to clean up foggy plastic lenses. They go from the mildest to the harshest and I would imagine that one would chose which method depending on if the lenses are just a bit cloudy or let's say almost obscured and yellowed. The 124 needs clearer lenses and the plastic surrounds on the 123 could use some renewing. Or there are places that advertise-some magic air thing, etc?? Re: [MBZ] Noisy W123 bearings - how diagnose? Front AND rear or justfront?
Andrew - Some folks have posted in the past that by listening for the noise in a turn you can load a wheel bearing and tell if it is on the right or left side. Barry My guess would be front wheel bearings (did they put in new races? If not, the old ones eat the new bearing very fast, BTDT). Tires are also a possibility, but that noise varies with road speed almost always. Yes, there is a bearing in each wheel carrier in the rear, and yes they can make noise. Also check for things like a bad belt or a fan rubbing on the shroud, or dead engine mounts allowing something to rub, like hoses. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT -- what to do with a go-cart engine
Allan - Most small engines that run equipment that is left to run unmonitored that I have seen use the wind off of the fan blades on the flywheel, assuming it is an air cooled engine, to blow against a vane inside the flywheel housing. The vane has a spring that counters the action of the wind on the vane so that, at a given RPM, the vane position is constant. The engine throttle is linked to the vane. If the engine tries to over speed the increased wind will pull the throttle closed. Conversely if the engine speed drops below a certain point the spring force countering the vane will open the throttle. The spring force is adjustable and therefore one can set this poor man's governor to keep the engine RPM at a certain speed. Your engine may already have this system in place and may just be missing the linkage parts between the governor and the throttle. If not I would check with Tecumseh or possibly your local lawn mower repair shop to see if the necessary parts may be available. The parts should be cheap and the installation pretty easy. Barry Have a small gasoline engine from an old go-cart. It's a Tecumseh with a horizontal crankshaft. Was thinking about pairing it up with a generator to have a small mobile power source, but not sure how easy it will be to govern the engine to run at the proper RPMs. Any ideas? ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] OT, front loading washers
Kaleb- We have a Frigidaire Affinity ATFB6000 That I inherited when my Mom passed away last year. I believe that my Mom had picked it as it was the 'Consumer Reports' best buy at the time. I think that it is almost two years old now and we have had no problems plus it seems to clean well. These new machines work a bit different than the older ones as they tumble slowly one direction then the other and the spin is quite fast. They no longer have a transmission as the motor reverses direction and drives the tub with a toothed belt. Because the spin is faster the clothes get much dryer so the dryer has to work less to dry the clothes. It is very important to use only the HE(High Efficiency)low sudsing detergent or the over sudsing of the regular detergent will eventually gum up the works and cause problems. The HE is a little difficult to find some places right now as it is fairly new yet but in the not too distant future I believe it may be the norm for all new machines. I think my wife gets it at COSTCO. The other words to the wise, that I learned by reading up on the things, is to be sure and leave the door ajar till things dry out in the tub or you may end up with some mold. I don't know if you have a water shortage problem where you are but we do here in So. Calif. And these machines use very little water compared to the top loaders and I believe they use less electricity as well. From what I have heard the new Maytags are not the same as the old since they were bought out by someone but that's just what I've heard. The best way to find out about reliability is if you have an indy appliance repairman that you can trust to give some unbiased informed about reliability and maintenance costs. Barry Thinking about replacing my 10 year old top loading Maytag. Anybody have one of these front loaders, or have shopped for them? Best brand to look at? Ones to stay away from. Was looking at those Frigidairs but they seem kind of flimsy. Wondered about LG and samsung as compared to say, a Maytag which I am used to.
