[Papermodels II 50286] Our hobby

2020-01-20 Thread Bones Parsons
I had cause to reflect on our cardmodel hobby the other day. I was at the local
hospital visiting my old mate PICNIC with whom I spend a bit of time each week
building cardmodels. I had taken the Saladin with me to show him the latest
additions to the build and was completely taken by surprise by the effects it
had on others who were incarcerated in the ward with him.
Some were amazed, others were flabbergasted and some were disbelieving until
they actually touched the model that it was made of basically paper and it
occurred to me that we , for the most part, take cardmodels for granted. We
download some, we share links to free ones and occasionally we buy one for a
pittance without really thinking about what actually goes into designing one.
I have an IT diploma and we ran our own PC business here so I know a little
about computers but software has always been smoke and mirrors to me and how
someone can design a model like the Saladin or the latest I've bought from Dave
Winfield, his Quad Gun Tractor, is simply beyond me. The Saladin has around
1700 parts and the Quad has about 900 parts but how does the designer even know
where to begin let alone flog the model off for a lousy 20 odd dollars ?. Here
in Oz that won't go anywhere near buying you a packet of dhurries, you'll get a
six pack of beer and a little change but that's about it but what about some
of these kits we occasionally build and the work that goes into them .
Don't mind me, I'm just musing here but we really should sit back and think
about these kits we collect and build, gahm-ded closed his website because
everyone, including myself, just grabbed his models without acknowledging the
work he put into them. Just something to think about.

paper modeling to him. I offered the download then figured I better build the
thing to see
if there were any build problems for a beginning paper modeler.

There were none. Simple design, good fit.

Control surfaces ( all those little ladder like rectangles) were scored to
enhance the model. Photo #1.

Wing attached photo #2. One side at a time pinched together then, by leaving
wing tips open, separated the inside top and lower wing surfaces at root with
long tool or stick before glue dried.

Note:
I failed to color fill the cowling rectangle panel both sides prior to printing.

Photo #3. Attached upper windshield and nose piece. Allowed to dry solid
before gluing the sides and bottom edges.

Photo #4. Business card mounting strut for horizontal stabilizers and tail
wheel support.
In photo upper left may be seen my feeble attempt with the tire assembly.

Photo #5. My quick method for making tires. Punch out cereal box cover
cardboard proper size discs and glue ‘em together.

Wire was used to reinforced the landing gear and wing struts.

Edges were lightly sanded before paint touch-up.

Mistakenly applied acrylic gold paint to edges and had to touch up areas again
with proper color.

Model wingspan is seven inches.

Unusual California rain today; snap shots were taken indoors under room
lighting.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to seal it, the humidity here is fairly high at

done and I have to say that even though they take a bit to build the effort
certainly leaves one with a feeling of satisfaction.

Subject: [Papermodels II 50182] Zio Prudenzio

I've been working on other projects and the Saladin has been neglected
however I felt like some cardmodelling and have wanted to build one of
Zio's models for a while.

It was only one small page...how hard could it be ?

Well these models are seriously nice to build but they aren't easy. I
finished the SE5a today and rather thought some rigging might be nice so
that's what I did, it's stretched sprue, much easier to manage than
monofilament or cotton and looks pretty good when all said and done. The
rigging is only basic and nowhere near what is on the original. I did a
quick calculation and I think the model is about 1/60. I cheated and put
a plastic pilot in the seat...ya do what ya gotta do. A zippo lighter is
shown for scale.

Sadly Zio is no longer with us but his models live on, nice models that
look great when finished even if a bit of effort is required.

Re: [Papermodels II 50057] Saladin update

2018-10-18 Thread Bones Parsons
Well Bob, I used florist wire for the handholds rather than the uninteresting
card ones supplied and I used CA for that after using a pin vise to part drill
locating holes, all the rest of the doodads are card so the usual wood glue for
them. For some reason the paint I used on all the edges and the hand holds
looks bad in the photo but are acceptable using the Mk1 Eyeball...I might mix
something a bit closer to the colour of the model and redo them. The hull has
taken a bit of a battering being carted to and fro from Old Mate's place for
model building sessions as can be seen on the front mudguard but nothing that
can't be patched up. I’ve had some trouble getting the mudguards to sit
properly however another old mate who used to serve in these things said the
guards were always bent and battered from scrub bashing and people climbing on
them so I'm not too worried.

This is a really accurate thing to build and has been a heap of fun but still
an awful lot to do, the suspension components are a whole ecosystem on their
own...it'll be a while before I get to the end of it.

[Papermodels II 50051] SD P40

2018-10-04 Thread Bones Parsons
Here it is finished apart from a coat of clear...I butchered bits of it
but then I didn't find it to be an easy build, still worth spending some
time on though. Bob did a better job on his I think, particularly on the
undercart wing assemblies. My chin radiator is all out of square too but
I sneakily photographed it from an angle where you can't see the
mistake...ssh

Maybe he's tired of the scammers taking his models and selling them on eBay.

I got this little model from a Chinese site here

https://ta7080.wixsite.com/paperfactory/2

and there are quite a few models on 2 pages. Normally I don't like Super
Deformed models but this one is a showstopper so I took a break from the
Saladin to make it. It only took a couple of hours to put together
although the photo instructions are fairly limited and you have to think
about it a bit to figure out how some parts go together. I blew it up in
a poster program and might take the time to build a big one...

The F3F Wildcat and the P40 look pretty good too and I think they might
be on the build list as well. Instructional photos can be found on about
9 pages from the second to the right of the download link in the blue
bar above the models, the page list is at the bottom of the page, but
they are all mixed up so you'll have to sort them as you save them.
There is a stand as well which I’m still working on, I'll post a photo
of it when I finish.

There was no control column provided but I got hold of a photo of the
original and reduced it to size, there is a full cockpit pretty much,
worth a bit of time to put together.

Well I've made a small amount of progress with the Saladin. This is one

are only 5 more to make. I'm not entirely happy with my finished product

aerials. More to come.

Re: [Papermodels II 49989] Tomb Raider Underworld

2018-08-06 Thread Bones Parsons
Nice Job !. if you build with tabs sometimes you may be able to diminish the
join by burnishing the inside of the join with one of those tools that has the
metal ball on the end, I've found that works well although you have to do it as
each piece is glued on.

This Lara is 11 inches tall.

Tabs were cut off and sections butt glued with backing support.
This paid off at the very end when Lara looked too clean
so she was subjected to final washes of brown water color.
The joins would be more pronounced if tab joins were implemented.

The model was given an overall coating of Krylon Acrylic Clear Matt.

Well the turret of the 1/16th Saladin is close to completion. Only a
handful of doohickies yet to be fitted although I have a decision to
make. There are 30 handholds on the outside and the supplied parts are
flat whereas the real ones are a U shape. I'm considering making them
out of florist's wire to get the 3D effect rather than cutting out each
little piece, about 4 x 1.5mm and painting all the edges. Seems a shame
to have flat bits of card stuck on but either way I'm in for some fun.

More to come,

Re: [Papermodels II 49862] Saladin

The fighting compartment and the engine bay are now done and small
laminations on the outside of the hull are nearing completion. There are
actually bolt heads as well but I drew the line at cutting, edge
painting and installing them, just too small.

I also only put together 7 of the 76mm rounds for the same reason. I've
made fairly good progress due to the weather here, sunny Queensland in
winter at 4C isn't an optimal operating temperature for broken bodies so
apart from bringing in firewood I've stayed away from the outdoors
altogether.

Next is the upper hull and then the diabolically numerous suspension
components although I yet to have install the driver's instruments. A
really fun build thus far.

[Papermodels II 49851] Saladin

2017-07-03 Thread Bones Parsons
Here's the model to this point and it has been a beautiful thing to
build. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, has fitted absolutely
perfectly with the exception of what I believe is the battery box, right
at the front centre, where the wrap around body of the box didn't quite
meet at the join. This isn't a problem since the join is hidden where it
fits to the body shell anyway.

The Rolls Royce engine alone took me about 4 hours to build but I did
take my time with it. Lots and lots of very small parts and lots of tube
rolling but I've enjoyed every minute so far. The suspension parts will
be interesting as it's very complex and heaps of small parts involved, I
have no idea how long the whole build will take but I would think a
couple of hundred hours the way I'm going.

The best 20 bucks I've ever spent, I'll see how I feel further on lol.

[Papermodels II 49847] The Robinsons drop in for a visit

2017-06-27 Thread Bones Parsons
Another of Dave Winfield's collection, as with all his stuff so far the
fit is perfect and this is a nice little model to add to the growing
heap of cardmodels here. It's the only second model of the Chariot that
I've seen, and the other one isn't a patch on this little pearler.

Here's a full size, albeit uncoloured, version of Bender Rodriguez as a

a little fiddling is needed to get it to work but from memory I think
winehq has the changes required... it's been a while since I got it
working so details are sketchy. Apple...I have no idea.

Rather than make a "box-like" paper model, the parts pages were printed twice
just to enhance the wood framework .

Attached a few in-process photos that may be of some interest:

La-Nina Parts Pages printed on HammerMill Cover Stock Ivory 67LB Two copies.
Sail Pages printed on 20 Lb copy paper
Rattle can Krylon Acrylic Gloss used to protect parts page surfaces.
Hull planking burnished including deck wooding.
Outside and inside ship side framing cut from second parts page.
Throughout build all cut edges color matched using water color.
Assembled parts using Aleene’s Tacky glue.
Applied several coats of Future Acrylic Floor Wax on finished hull and base.

Sails:
Carefully burnished over layers of soft paper towel.
Old thread selected from wife’s sewing basket.
Between thumb and trigger finger applied Aleene’s tacky glue
to several weighted and hung thread lengths that dried overnight.
These were used for rigging and flags.
Attached sails to wood dowels using lighter colored thread.
All thread knots spot glued.

Two straight pins pushed from base bottom helped secure posts to hull.

This is Hoborginc's model from deviant art. It started life as an M4 but
I liked the earlier M16 bits and pieces that were offered as an option.
A couple of years ago I built his AK47 and found it to be a bit trying
as far as fit of parts was concerned, I believe he has offered an
updated version of this now, so when I started this I was a little
hesitant as to whether it would be the same as the AK47.

Thankfully this model is pretty good all round, some minor fit issues
with a couple of small parts but no biggie at all, nothing a bit of
surgery won't fix. Lots of detail and thought have gone into this
although the instructions leave a bit to be desired, there was nothing
at all about the internal bolt arrangement and the builder needs to look
far ahead before building to make sure bits go where they are supposed
to...just a bit of extra though is enough. Once again, as with the
Thompson I built, his model is undersize if what I found out about the
real thing is correct.

Worth a look for sure.

I have a problem that has driven me to drink on many occasions and maybe
someone here has an answerI have a cardmodel of an assault gun from
the game Unreal Tournament (can't remember where it came from), every
time I try to print it the whole thing comes out dark and heavily black
despite many parts being a camo type green. I have tried...

Printing in Linux and Windoze XP

Printed from Foxit and Adobe in Windoze on both computers

Printed from Document Viewer, Adobe, Pepakura and the GIMP in Linux

Tried on my computer from Linux, from a separate install of XP and a
virtual machine XP and from Dearly Beloved's computer running XP on 2
different printers, both Brother but different models

Printed out as a .pdf and also converted the .pdf to 300 dpi .jpg

Altered all the colour quality, brightness and contrast settings in the
print settings

I've come across this in the past and never really found a good
solution. Anyone else have this issue ?

I was sitting here thinking about things while building the current model that
has my attention and was mulling over just why I like cardmodels. There are
many reasons including the fact that I can build models that I have no other
means to get. Take Yan Ruker's M41a pulserifle, here in Oz there is no way,
without a collector's license, to get that model. I can't import it, even if I
could afford to, but I can make a near realist one from card, also Haggard's
Star trek rifle and phasers.

That goes for the other weapons on the wall here, we had a customer who arrived
regularly to have his copy of Windoze fixed and he was a walloper
(copper/flatfoot to Americans or the fuzz/Old Bill to UK residents), his
eyebrows used to accelerate to warp speed whenever he saw a new rifle on the
wall. Here it's an offense to even have a replica of a firearm.

Another reason is cost, plastic models are at the point where one is required
to trade one's firstborn to get enough money to buy one. Parts that get stuffed
up in the build can be reprinted, bonus, and models can be built over and over
if so desired.

The time and effort that are required in order to bring a model to completion
gives a real sense of achievement and that goes to the extreme when the model
is taken for a plastic kit or even a real model for that matter.

Without people like the Haggard and Ruker and countless others this great hobby
would still be in its infancy. Anyone else like to add their thoughts ?.

True about the mistakes Joy, I'll more than likely do this one again now
that I know the pitfalls. Also true of some of the cardmodels we all
build here, people just don't believe they are card, until you hand it
to them and watch their jaw drop. A mate of mine was here a while ago
and was flabbergasted that I had a '73 Winchester until I told him it
was made of card...he just shook his head !!!

This is the current state of build...filling the gaps with model putty,
very slow work indeed. I left the main hatch half open and added
interior detail to the inside of the hatch and cut out a pie slice from
the roof, too much interior detail not to be seen. The slice will be
removable, there will be a noticeable join but I thought that better
than not seeing most of the detail inside.
The landing legs are done and painted but that will be the last thing to
fit, yet to thermoform a dome for the top...getting there. Maybe an LED
insidedon't know yet.

to use model putty to fill the gaps in the joins and it's fill, sand,

It IS a beautiful thing to build...one of those models where the
accuracy of the fit of the parts depends on whether you cut on the line

underneath and start on the top.
