31/1.8 vs Sigma 35/1.4 art

2016-10-18 Thread Larry Colen
I do a lot of my photography in really low light. The 2/3 stop between
f/1.8 and f/1.4 doesn't seem like much, but when you're talking the
difference between 1/13 and 1/20 Second, it can be a huge difference.
Similarly, doing night landscapes, the 2/3 stop can be a big deal with
star motion in the background.

Does anyone have experience with both the 31 limited and the 35 art? I
can't justify buying the faster lens without selling the 31. It's been
a workhorse lens for me, particularly since it was my only fast
"standard" in APS.

I've heard good things about the sigma, and even if it isn't as sharp in
some situations, the faster aperture would make an even bigger
difference in others.

Re: Enablement: Two fine pieces of Pentax glass in 2 weeks

2016-10-18 Thread Mark C
I have the 1.4x-L and it works great - I mostly use it with the A* 200
f4 macro, though I originally bought the TC for use with my A* 400 f2.8.
I did not like the 2x-L so much and sold it - it was sharp but bokeh on
the 400mm was weird.

The Pz-1p sounds like a nice find - I used mine for a couple weeks this
summer while my Mz-S was in for repairs. The interface is very similar
to newer DSLRs - its a great camera.

is said to work with these lenses:

- SMC Pentax-DA* 200mm F2.8
- SMC Pentax-FA* 200mm F2.8
- SMC Pentax-A* Macro 200mm F4
- SMC Pentax-A* 300mm F2.8

- SMC Pentax 135-600mm F6.7
- SMC Pentax F* 250-600mm F5.6
- SMC Pentax FA* 250-600mm F5.6
- SMC Pentax 400-600mm F8-12

Sadly, I own none of those lenses. The DA* 200mm f2.8 is still on my "want"
list and would allow me to turn it into a 280mm f4. 300mm f4 is about a
GRAND, so this TC makes a lot of sense for anybody with a lens on the list
above.

The following week, I stumbled upon a Pentax-F 135mm f2.8, which appears to
be fairly rare and people tend to go GA-GA over.

Also picked up some other stuff with the purchases, including another Pz-1p
body (in original box).

Re: PESO: My Fox

2016-10-18 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I haven't seen foxes here, but our diggers are armadillos.
I am too lazy to get outside at wee hours to see them.
And there are might be someone else who keeps re-digging the same hole in
front of the house. (I've sort of given up on closing it back every time.)
Other large-scale pests in our yard are deers. A block down the road,
people are actively feeding them, so there is a flock that is almost
fearless. And they come to chew the roses.

I've finally found a spray ("deers and rabits") that deters the dears.
I am not sure if something like that can also be effective against foxes..

Thanks Dan. I replaced the original with a different frame that was exposed at

Thanks, Ann - I wondered what the tree might be.

It's a wonderful place. Sadly we had only a couple of hours in the
evening to enjoy it as we had to head off first thing next morning -
heading for Goosenecks, Mesa Verde and Farmington. A full day!

Re: OT Mac OS Sierra - break anything photographic?

2016-10-18 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Hmm. Your experience is nothing like mine. What system are you using?

For me (and I only use Apple equipment so I have no idea how Android or other
touch devices respond), the iPad Pro in particular is every bit as responsive
as any mouse and/or trackpad desktop computer. As a matter of fact, it's
actually more responsive in many situations with better finger/touch/pointing
accuracy, etc. It's so good in fact that when I'm working on one of the MacBook
laptops I often touch the screen to affect something and wonder why it didn't
respond until I realize that I'm on a different machine/OS, etc.

I touch an icon and instantly the app is running and waiting for my input, or
showing me what I wanted to see. If I'm using the soft keyboard, I can type 50
wpm on it ... the keyboard gives a better tactile feel and gives me more screen
real estate to work with. BTW, the keyboard cover adds an eighth of an inch to
the overall thickness of the iPad Pro when closed and about four ounces, that's
it; the machine remains just as portable.

If you are experiencing that kind of poor responsiveness with an Apple iPad,
let me know what model/configuration/iOS version you're using. Also, if you're
on a model with limited storage and limited free space, be sure you don't have
a lot of background-active apps and services running, slowing things down.

What I find is that touchscreen environments are "fragile". With a
keyboard and mouse I tell the computer what I want done whereas with a
touchscreen I plead repeatedly with it to do what I'd like.

I touch an icon. Nothing happens. I touch it again, it maybe jiggles
or flashes briefly. Third time it finally launches the app. Great, now
I want to type a reply in Instagram so I get the virtual keyboard.
Type a few letters, okay. Try to type a P which is near the edge of
the screen -- no go. I try twisting my finger in several different
orientations, on its side, straight down, nothing. Finally I get an
ell or I accidentally enable the microphone.

It's always just an exercise in frustration. Getting the wrong action
is frequent and getting a dangerous action is frequent enough to be
really annoying. I end up deleting email instead of simply closing it
or moving it to another folder. The number of times I have made the
end of my finger sore by angrily stabbing at the screen when some UI
element refuses to react is uncountable.

The Apple screens are way better than Android ones for sure, but they
are all simply annoying and frustrating to use so I always do as
little as possible on them then move my work to a desktop to get done.

If I really wanted to use the iPad on the go, I would get a real
keyboard for it as you suggest. That would help no doubt, at the
expense of making it somewhat less portable.

What sells units is features, unfortunately. Runs counter to my intuition and

a sound feature base.

I have the keyboard cover for the iPad Pro. I'm typing this on it now. It's a
very nice keyboard, actually, even the small one on this 9.7 inch model. (I
have a 12.3 inch model as well, but I don't carry it around as much.) I've
written one and a half books on this iPad and put together presentations, a few

gloves' or 'doing anything creative' being difficult. It's pretty easy as a
matter of fact.

Well crafted apps and good peripherals enable a lot. I wouldn't discount them.
Crappy apps and just a touchscreen aren't entirely adequate for everything; a
modern computer without a good mouse or touch pad, a good keyboard, etc, is
pretty useless too.

Malcolm,
That's a great photo!

My first thought when I saw the message subject was it was not literal.

As far as I heard, in Chinese folklore, a fox is a magic creature that
visits to test a person. If the person does well, the fox rewards one.
Otherwise the tested person can be punished even with a death.

Thanks. I'd not heard that folklore story before.

The year before last, we had no end of grief with foxes digging up the
garden. I bought stuff from a farm shop to repel them - it did the opposite.
Since then, I've accepted the damage caused, which has reduced, and taken it
as a photo opportunity. One person a few roads away has them at the back
door at night, as she has taken to feeding them. That has not gone down
well with her neighbours!

Re: PESO: My Fox

2016-10-18 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Malcolm,
That's a great photo!

My first thought when I saw the message subject was it was not literal.

As far as I heard, in Chinese folklore, a fox is a magic creature that
visits to test a person. If the person does well, the fox rewards one.
Otherwise the tested person can be punished even with a death.

Now _that_ would be worth the upgrade to me. You'd think the marketing
folks would have emphasized that as a bullet point, but I guess it's
not sexy enough.

I carry my iPad around the house with me for checking email and such,
so yeah, I get that. But I don't try to do anything creative with it.
Nothing that requires typing or "mousing".

(Doing anything creative using a touchscreen is like trying to set a
dining table for eight wearing boxing gloves. You might think you are
starting to do okay until you get to the wine glasses.)

Re: OT Mac OS Sierra - break anything photographic?

2016-10-18 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I'm not "feature driven" either; I hardly use any of that stuff either
(although I do use the macOS Messages app quite a bit).

Most of the work in Sierra is actually OS infrastructure that makes it perform
better on the same hardware I was running El Capitan on, from what I see and
what my use of it shows. That's what makes it worth more to me. Plus the
continuing, improvements in coordination of macOS with my phone and tablet
usage.

(An iPad Pro is now pretty much my 'standard computer' other than for
photographic and publishing work.)

Re: OT Mac OS Sierra - break anything photographic?

2016-10-18 Thread Bruce Walker
Thanks for that info, Dave. I was afraid of something like the Java
installer becoming a problem.

I've been teetering on the brink of getting CC for a year now, but I
may continue holding out for a while more. Sierra is the very first
Mac OS X version that completely disinterests me, and if I simply
avoid upgrading to it then I can also avoid CC for a while longer.

Sierra features: I don't need or want Siri. I already talk to my pets
too much and I'm not about to start talking to my computer as well.
Besides, I really dislike input devices that include a huge amount of
randomness like touch screens and voice recognition. Keyboards and
mice positively do what you direct them to do.

As I run down the remaining checkbox items on the features list there
isn't a compelling thing there. Most of the features require either an
Apple Watch or an iPhone to be useful and I have neither. Many
features are just iOS influences. iCloud figures large in there --
don't need it. Photos app? Useless. Messages? Don't use. Float video
over my desktop while I work? Pxzt! Who thinks that's a good idea?

Enablement: Two fine pieces of Pentax glass in 2 weeks

I snagged a remarkable piece of Pentax glass (according to reviewers:

the Rear Converter A 1.4X-L with original box and case. This teleconverter
is said to work with these lenses:

Sadly, I own none of those lenses. The DA* 200mm f2.8 is still on my "want"
list and would allow me to turn it into a 280mm f4. 300mm f4 is about a
GRAND, so this TC makes a lot of sense for anybody with a lens on the list
above.

The following week, I stumbled upon a Pentax-F 135mm f2.8, which appears to
be fairly rare and people tend to go GA-GA over.

Also picked up some other stuff with the purchases, including another Pz-1p
body (in original box).

I think a little bit past full gives a better photograph anyway. Adds a
little bit of texture that's often missing from a full moon photo.

Bruce, i use LR 4.1 with the 4.4 upgrade stored on my computer. Do i
take it if i upgrade to 4.4 it should be ok using El Captain.??

I know my old PS 8, or CS will not work nor will PSEL 9. My Fetch
5.3.1 should and i think the internet says my Word for Mac 2012 will,
those are the most programs i use to date

I use an older Lightroom, 4.4. Also older Photoshop CS5 (12.0.4).

I'm running El Cap and LR 6.7.

I have heard of people having problems syncing multiple devices. I don't
remember if that is multiple OSX and one IOS, or multiple IOS and one OSX.

Thanks!

I like Moon pictures and it's an excuse to get a big mirror lens out. A couple
of my friends have taken Moon pictures recently and applied filters or
otherwise modified them in Lightroom. Whilst they look unusual, they don't look
right. The Moon looks good as it is. Nice image right here.
