Maybe low light is a sensor problem? A standard Bayer mosaic sensor is a planar surface with a filter array on top of it. This means that the light at each of the photosites for all three colors is essentially equal, minus the amount that the particular color filter absorbs for each photosite. A Fovean sensor stacks three photosites in each pixel location on the sensor, with a color filter between them. I don't know precisely how they order the stack, but it would make sense to order it blue, green, red since short wavelengths are more easily absorbed than longer wavelengths. But what this means is that the light energy hitting the bottom layer is inevitably reduced compared to what hits the top layer. I thought one the main premises was that each sensor would absorb all the light for a certain range of wavelenghts, and not at all respond light outside that range, so that it would continue without any loss of energy to the next layer(s) (absorbing different wavelengths.) And also, that there weren't filters as such, just differences in the way the photo diodes respond to light, or whatever. But maybe the problem is that it's not quite like that in the real world... - Toralf They compensate to some degree by making the three layers differentially sensitive, either by adjusting the signal amplification or by staggering the photosite sizings, I don't know. But what this means is that for a given amount of light energy per unit area falling on the sensor plane, a Fovean sensor has to work harder to achieve the same signal to noise characteristic than a Bayer matrix sensor. The difference is that a Fovean sensor is acquiring R, G, and B values at each pixel position, producing a non-interpolated chroma resolution at the same pixel resolution, where a Bayer mosaic takes a minimum of an 8x8 pixel array in a GRBG/RBGG/BGGR row*column (or similar ordering) to resolve each pixel's position and RGB value by interpolation. The article makes a big deal of the Fovean design not needing an AA filter to combat chroma irregularities due to the interpolation of pixel position. Well, as pixel density increases, the need for an AA filter to minimize chroma irregularities reduces such that with today's sensors the spatial resolution is very nearly identical to the Fovean sensor's capabilities at the same single-layer resolution. AA filters do more than simply minimize chroma irregularities ... they also minimize moire artifacts, the effect of discrete line crossings on a cartesian grid when the cell size of the grid is close to the width of the line. Again, as grid cell size decreases, the tendency to moire also decreases. All engineering solutions to the problem of obtaining enough color information to accurately characterize the incoming light are tradeoffs. Fovean technology means more complex to manufacture, multi-layer sensors, which have known plusses and minuses compared to Bayer mosaic sensors. My feeling is that the quality of Bayer mosaic sensor technology is such that for practical purposes, the Fovean design is mostly irrelevant except for some very critical color niche market uses. If the cost of making Fovean sensors were to drop, and a solution to the multi-layer light absorbtion issue resolved, it might stand a chance of becoming more popular than a Bayer mosaic design ... as then there would be more demand for the sensors and the price would drop further by the scaling effect of large volume manufacturing. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Quite possible that that is how they implement the layering, by embedding the light-absorbing dye into the photosite chemistry, but there's still absorption between the layers which causes less total light energy to strike the third layer than the first. Physics. To oversimplify the situation, you can't create a sensor that captures all the blue photons, and yet lets 100% of the red or green photons pass through. As a result, the second and third layers don't receive 100% of the photons that they would respond to if they were the frontmost layer. This leads to a degradation in sensitivity and in the signal-to-noise ratio. Quite. Like I sort of said elsewhere, though, it seems to me that you could pass through a lot less than 100% and still be better off than you are when filtering at every site. MX shutter problem?
Folks, I'm having a slight issue with an old, beat-up MX I bought for next to nothing a year or two ago (not sure if I told anyone here.) On the last film I shot with it, a large number of frames only came out as partially exposed. To show you what I'm talking about, I went ahead and scanned the entire film (well, I probably wanted digital versions of some pictures anyway.) Here is an index file produced during this process: http://www.toralf.net/images/mxError.jpg All images have the natural orientation of the film, and they are ordered according to frame no, and split into the same strips as the film itself. As you can see, there is often data missing, always on the same side, but the amount varies. There are also a few blanks, but this might of course be caused by something else entirely. I think I saw something like this earlier, too, but then there were only 2 or 3 incidents throughout the film. So, what do you reckon? Is the shutter broken, or what? If it is, would it be worth fixing? Also, if the curtains stick or whatever, why not all the time? (Different exposure times?) Or alternatively, is there something else that might cause something like this? I mean, besides actually blocking parts of the lens, as surely I would have noticed that in the viewfinder. - Toralf -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Vuescan's DNG files are DNG encapsulated TIFF, so they are RGB files inside a DNG container that can be edited with raw processing tools, Well, DNG *is* TIFF, isn't it, in many ways. So I don't know about encapsulated. But this was what I was trying to say, really - the Vuescan DNG does not have mosaic data, so any demosaic/interpolation settings will obviously have no effect, but they are hardly relevant anyway since you have true RGB data already. Besides that, I should think that anything you can do with a camera DNG file, you can also do with one from Vuescan. which arguably can do a better job for some things. Yes. I learned something new, too. As far as I know, we have two different species of newts here, and they are both considered as endangered. Even here, where it doesn't get very cold, the lizards & snakes tend to be quite sluggish on cooler mornings. Quite. I few years ago I actually came across a slow-worm on the pavement near where I live. This was an a cool evening rather than morning, and the English name of the creature seemed quite appropriate, if you know what I mean. I would say those are in the process of emerging from hibernation. Perhaps you should have observed them over an extended period? Anyhow, I actually asked the natural history museum, and according to them, this is in fact not a lizard after all, but rather a newt in its "terrestrial phase", also known as an "eft". I thought these would have flatter and thicker tails, but I guess that's something that they develop later... Apparently, they will wander from their place of hibernation to dams around this time, and run a great risk of drying out if it's too sunny. Apparently, you can find them in much more northerly parts of the country... Many reptiles are able to survive very cold conditions by hibernating. There is also a change that they have been forced out into the sun because their place has been disturbed. - Toralf Alan C -Original Message- From: Bob W-PDML Sent: Tuesday, April 11, 2017 1:09 AM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: PESO - Lizard(s), passed on? If not, - you should. As I sort of said elsewhere, I did. Unfortunately, the report got marked as a duplicate of another issue (which I didn't notice when searching), and that issue is marked as WONTFIX. But I'm still shouting. 1. They might not be aware of it. 2. They might not think that change was a problem... Part of the issue seems to be that one of the developers behind the change has decided that it's not a problem, no matter how many people say that it is in fact a problem. 3. The priority of the problem fixing is decided by the overall loudness (hence the number) of complaints. ... but even some loudness might still help, perhaps... Meanwhile, I found that the situation gets a little better if you 1. Right-click on the header in the message view and select "Customise..." 2. Drag the button marked "Reply" from the main window to the "Customise Toolbar" window (so as to remove it from the view.) 3. Press Done in the window I just mentioned. The message view will then only have a "Smart reply" button which alternates between "Reply", "Reply All" and "Reply List" depending on the context. (Note that the behaviour changes compared to when you also have the "normal" "Reply" button, because then the "Smart Reply" then hides itself in some cases.) Actually, the situation might be acceptable if you could also add "Smart reply" to the main tool-bar and have a keyboard short-cut for it. There are bug reports related to this, too, but they're not exactly new, so there is a question of whether the issues will ever be addressed. I still think the "Reply" implementation is wrong in principle, though... - Toralf Igor P. J. GESO - Metropolis
I thought I might post something on that "microblog" site of mine the other day. Even though it's only been about five years since last time. I guess my rate of posting here is also "once every few years" these days, but there you have it... https://se.toralf.net/post/692942694488621056/metropolis Thanks for looking. Or alternatively for ignoring it completely, which is probably also OK. As I'm saying, I tend to go out with High Hopes in these circumstances, but tend to end up with something that's, well, quite ordinary, I guess. - Toralf -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Didn't think about them when posting, though. What is the ‘special’ film you used? The film is actually called Metropolis. Lomography brand. Which I guess often means a repackaged/rebranded version of something else, possibly intended for a different purpose, but I think they claim that this one is actually a new film. I have been taking B film photos lately, mainly Ilford FP-4, but I have bought five rolls of Ferrania P30 which promises interesting things. Nice. Now I have to find a suitably neo-realist set of subjects. Exactly. I also got a roll of Lomography Potsdam Kino 100. Might be similar. - Toralf On 24 Aug 2022, at 19:57, Toralf Lund wrote: I thought I might post something on that "microblog" site of mine the other day. Thanks. This is plain, old Oslo. Several shots are from recently developed areas. I'm not sure it qualifies as a Metropolis, really, but I was looking for that "theme" at least in part, seeing as it's also the marketing name of the film. :-) - Toralf On 24/08/2022 21:09, Daniel J. Re: GESO - Metropolis
Thanks! Maybe I could have left the images a bit darker in post processing. I always find that kind of thing hard to judge. The film is supposed to give a "desaturated look", or something of that nature. The gallery thing I'm using wants to scale images to available size (with borders) and doesn't offer an easy way to zoom in. The thumbnails at the bottom were supposed to have more direct links to the original, but sometimes add "frames", too. And maybe the files were also scaled a bit on upload. Need to have a closer look at everything if I continue to use this... looks like the monument to the mand in the middle is eying the scooter(?) left in font of him :-) That's one of those "electric scooters" that seem to be everywhere these days. They annoy a lot of people, but I think they make nice subjects sometimes. - Toralf On 26/08/2022 14:01, ann sanfedele wrote: Torlaf .. The 6th photo, the open space with buldings faintly emerging in the distance is very powerful and painterly. it rather looks like those drawings architects make to show what they are planning for the future. the one preceding it gave me a giggle - looks like the monument to the mand in the middle is eying the scooter(?) left in font of him and the overall geometry is nice. for most of the others, I'd personally prefer to see stronger lines and less of the overexposed look - but that's just me. your site doesnt let me enlarge the photos enough for me(with my eye promlems)to see them clearly... on my monitor (HP desktop< Windows 7 pro running) The largest I can make an image is the size of a 5 x 7 print.. is that just a clash of software across the seas or intentional ? I usually have the opposite problem viewing some work too large to see the entire frame and I have to shrink it. anyway, nice work as usual ann On 8/24/2022 2:57 PM, Toralf Lund wrote: I thought I might post something on that "microblog" site of mine the other day. Yep. Those are nice places. The fortress is located behind the ship on the second to last picture, sort of. In case you wondered. - Toralf On 25/08/2022 22:25, Daniel J.
