Jim - count me in. I'll likely be there all three nights. I'll be driving
the SEA - PDX - SFO ferry pickup. I have 2 riders (Smitty and Hugh)
south, but could probably fit a 4th. Only 1 other (Smitty) returning north
at this point, so if anyone else needs a ride, let me know.

Master wheelbuilder Rich Lesnik has confirmed his attendance, as has RBW

For planning purposes, now would be a good time to let me know if you're

I have some volunteers already, but if you want to volunteer for something

[RBW] Re: Chain Woes

2014-06-04 Thread Michael Hechmer
I have never had good luck with Sram chains and have found their master
links to be particularly problematic. Some years ago I switched to
Wipperman 908 chains and have always gotten good shifting, long life and
reliability from them. Their master links are a different design and are
reliable and much easier to install and remove. They cost a bit more (not
nearly as much as RBW charges) but are well worth it.

If you are taking the bike to a trustworthy mechanic he will inspect the
cassette and rings for signs of premature wear.

Good luck.

Re: [RBW] Chain Woes

you can find new SRAM chains for as little as $13, and a spare master link
is a very light spare to haul along. If you wear through a master link,
your chain was probably stretched enough to affect shifting and
sprocket/chainring wear.

Re: [RBW] Chain Woes

2014-06-04 Thread Jim
That sounds like a good plan, certainly easy enough to replace with the
master link. Still, it sure seems premature. I really don't have that
many miles on the bicycle, I use it almost exclusively for commuting, which
is a15 mile round trip. I estimate somewhere around 1000 miles on the
thing.

I have the chain with me, will be stopping at the LBS to let them have a
look this evening.

Re: [RBW] Re: RIV The Oregon Outback

2014-06-04 Thread Jan Heine
My 42 mm Compass Babyshoe Pass Extralight tires were great on 85% of the
gravel sections. There were a number of places where the gravel was very
sandy and soft, where everybody seemed to have trouble. Wider tires would
have been useful there.

On the other hand, 30% of the ride was on paved roads, where any knobbies
would slow you down considerably. It's no coincidence that the two fastest
finishers were on road tires (38 and 42 mm wide). My current hypothesis is
that wider high-performance road tires (if they were in fact available)
would be ideal for this event, but considering the currently available
options, I'd choose the same tires again if I was going for a fast time.

What tires were you thinking of using for the route? The 1.9 smooth

the 3 tires on my Krampus seem like overbiking.

Jan Heine did the route, very fast, on smooth 42mm Compass Babyshoe Pass

not that much fun on the pavement. The bike now has a Sugino 26/40 wide

Good choice!

Personally, I believe that my working bikes (1993 X0-1 and 1973-74 era

For one thing, you can never have enough Nitto:) These bikes also have
finer frames than their cosmetics would suggest and I've always believed in

Those Suntour Superbe/Cylone parts cane with your Sequoia and I'd ride the

 Short Pull Levers
 Thumb shifters - friction/7/8 speed

Re: [RBW] Re: Praise to panaracer

2014-06-04 Thread Tim Gavin
Ryan-

Yes, they make Grand Bois (Jan's Hetre et fils), Compass (Jan's new line),
Rivendell, Soma, Pacenti, and Panaracer tires.

They're all made to different specifications from the designers, and it's
cool that Panasonic allows for such customization.

Ever since Schwinn got them to make the Voyageurs in the early 70s (and
probably earlier on the home market), Panasonic has been crafting quality
bicycles and bike products under contract, in addition to their own lines.

Re: [RBW] Chain Woes

2014-06-04 Thread Lynne Fitz
I have had a master link fail on me ONCE, and that was probably because I had
taken it apart a few times too many (SS coupled bike dismantled a few times).

For some folks, 1000 miles is as long as a chain will last. One of my riding
buddies gets maybe 2000 miles on his chains; I get close to 4000 miles.

I use SRAM or KMC chains, whichever are available. KMC is a smoking deal. The
KMC master links can be bought in bulk; I keep a couple in my bike bag. I have
also saved someone's ride when their chain broke.

[RBW] Re: WTB: your old beat-up components

2014-06-04 Thread Lynne Fitz
Back in 2007, I bought a Bleriot frame, had SS couplers installed, and built
it up. My gruppo is the shiny silver Shimano compatible set. It looked very
nice and shiny, and was meant to be my rando bike. My then-commuter/rando
bike, a Sekai 2400, died a horrible death just before I built up the Bleriot.
So Bleriot became my commute bike as well.

Riding buddy: you are going to commute on your RIVENDELL? Me: it is a bike.
 get over it.

13000 miles later, one wreck (new tubes! new paint!), still going strong, and
it gets ridden everywhere. And, yes, it does stick out a bit among all the
commuter/beater bikes. I don't care.

Message: enjoy your bike as is!

Oh, I doubt that very much. I take my master links apart in order to
clean and relube my chains at roughly 100 mile intervals, and my chains
last typically at least 5,000 miles, often more, and I've never had a
master link fail. I use SRAM chains, mostly 9 speed.

Re: [RBW] Re: RIV The Oregon Outback

2014-06-04 Thread Shawn Granton
If it were me, I'd stick to the south (Oregon) side the whole way to
Deschutes River. SR 14 is fairly busy, just two lanes with minimal
shoulders in places, and also feature a series of tunnels. Right now you
can avoid riding on I-84 from Troutdale to Hood River for all but about 15
miles between Cascade Locks and Hood River. (They just completed a section
of the Historic Columbia River Hwy trail right around Bonneville, and the
state and other agencies seem to really be serious about completing the
missing link of trail in a shortish amount of time.)

Staying on SR-14 also means missing out on one of the best sections of the
old Historic Columbia River Hwy: between Hood River and The Dalles. The
Rowena Curves are pretty awesome, and you don't want to miss the chance
that the ex-mayor of Mosier taking a pic of you in front of the Mosier
Totems.

If I lived in Portland, I'd just see if I could get someone to retrieve
me via car as Interstate 84 is right by Deschutes State Park.

Riding to Portland would be an option, the wind does not always howl
through the gorge, and it doesn't always blow west to east either. But if
you caught it on a bad day it wouldn't be pleasant.

Taking a route through the mountains would be an alternative if it was
windy. I would not want to take US26, but I know people do use bikes on
that route sometimes. It looks like there are quite a lot of National
Fores (NF) roads and other back roads looking at Google Maps, but I would
want local maps before deciding on a route.

I'm sure there's some Portlanders who have some cycling routes through
the mountains that avoid heavily traveled roads - Lolo Pass Road/NF-18
skirting the north and west flanks of Mt. Hood looks interesting.

Yes. :) The make those as well as Grand Bois, Bruce Gordan RR, Rivendell,
Soma, Pacenti, and I might have forgotten some.
One good example of this is the SomaX Ocean Air Cycles co venture - the Soma
CLine. The Cline is essentially a supple 38mm folding version of the Pasela
700x37c tire but with no added flat protection (low pressure and careful riding
do enough for many folks) and the tread from the 35mm Pasela, with multiple
color options.

All of the tire lines I mentioned above have some grand-slam-dunks. Find some
that fit the bikes you ride and give them a go.

anything that costs that much as a disposable, not when it's so

pliers for this purpose), dunk the chain in a can of mineral
spirits, hang it up to dry, and re-lube it, and extend the life of

Re: [RBW] Re: Quick question on the Cheviot

2014-06-04 Thread Bruce Smitham
My wife has the Cheviot and we have not taken it mountain biking. It's an
all-rounder with thinner slicks at this point but we will probably add some
knobbies and test it out later this summer. There just aren't many great tire
choices in 650b so I am being patient. I know that Riv has a video on their
site with Keven putting it through the off road test and it seems to handle the
off road just fine. I think it's the same all roundish bike as my Sam
Hillborne. You can do almost anything on it you want. The hunqapillar seems
sturdier if you plan to ride mostly off road. That's what I would get and still
might someday.

Chuck Norris might go for something like the above. I can feel the road

And no one can forget Jackie Chan's exploits on a bike.

Back in 1901, Pearson's Magazine offered this illustrated feature on how to

Pricepoint has some 120tpi 27.5 tires from Vee Rubber for $30. I have the

Re: [RBW] More jewelry from Nitto

2014-06-04 Thread Bruce Gordon
Yes - those are the Nokio tires that were the inspiration for our Rock 'n Road
tires.
They were no longer in production - we made them a little different shape and
tread and much lighter.
I have always given credit to those tires, in fact, I have one on display next
to the RNR Tires.
There is nothing new in the bike business - my problem is when people copy
parts that are currently made.
Check out the MKS Urban Platform Pedals - then check out the White Industries
Urban Platform Pedals that MKS copied.
We made a Carbon Handlebar - http://www.bgcycles.com/carbon-handlebars.html - I
got the idea for these bars from The Data Book - in fact they are on page 186
- hence the name.

[RBW] Re: South Florida Betty Foy owners ?

2014-06-04 Thread Victoria
Thanks for the replies. At present I am riding a semi recumbent which is
not working for my back, funny (not so funny) enough I injured my back in a
mountain bike accident ending in a back surgery so it has been tricky to
find something that works, Legs extended on a bent or semi recumbent ends
up putting pressure on the lower spine more than I thought, good for short
rides but not long ones. I had one little DF trek that absolutely killed
my back, was too bent over for it and was pretty jarring. I ride what ever
and then drag myself to the chiropractor who yells at me and then I ride
again. I just wanna have fun and be able to keep up with groups (not
spandex racing groups, just fun people that prefer bikes to cars)Backs
are funny things, what works for one will not work for another so clearly
trying the bike would tell me everything but looks like that may not be an
option and I may need to roll the dice and just do it.

[RBW] Re: South Florida Betty Foy owners ?

2014-06-04 Thread Victoria
Thanks for that! I blew a disc out on a mountain bike accident and ended
up needing surgery and its been a little tricky finding something that
works. I rode recumbents for a bit and have a semi recumbent but it seems
to be nailing a nerve and throwing my back way out. Typically diamond
frame bikes have been hard on me but something about this bike makes me
think it could work. I could love it dearly and my back could hate it.
Hopefully I can sit on one, if not then I will have to roll the dice. :)

Tony, you were not the only Riv in the Dirty Kanza this year. I was riding

first hit gravel. I also saw your Atlantis outside the theatre Friday
night and had to take a pic since I figured the Rivs would be few and far
between in the DK. Unfortunately, I had to drop out at the water stop 28
miles in because my bottom bracket went out. I was really disappointed
since I probably had less than 200 miles on the Sam and was just getting in
to the fun part of the race. I will say the 28 miles I rode were tough and
I'm not sure I could of made the full 111. This was my first endurance
event, but definitely not my first time on gravel. My goal was to at least
make it to the 59 mile checkpoint. The guys I rode with that finished were
pretty beat up. I can't imagine doing 200. FWIW, most of the guys I rode
with were running Clements MSO 40mm or Surly Knards and did not have any
flats. I was running the Force Field Fatty Rumpkins and also had no
problems. I can't believe how many people were flatting!

After the race, one of the more experienced riders suggested 35# in the

hub had play and investigated it further to find the cones are all pitted and
rusted out. I regressed and adjusted it buts still crepitus.

 Short Pull Levers
 Thumb shifters - friction/7/8 speed

 have been useful there.

Schwalbes I have on my Atlantis seem like a tiny bit of underbiking, and
the 3 tires on my Krampus seem like overbiking.

Jan Heine did the route, very fast, on smooth 42mm Compass Babyshoe Pass

reserved a 30-person group site on Mt Diablo for Monday, July 14th. I
assume there will be some drop off of attendees, or even some informal
camping in the backcountry for Monday.

Master wheelbuilder Rich Lesnik has confirmed his attendance, as has RBW
all around nice guy Vince Nivolo. More announcements of RBW folk will be
 forthcoming.

For planning purposes, now would be a good time to let me know if you're
really going to attend. The poll didn't exceed 40, but if we have many more
than that, we should get another campsite or two.

I have some volunteers already, but if you want to volunteer for
something (leading a ride, cooking, shuttling, moonshine distilling), let
 me know that too.

 cheers
 jim

I'm in for the first two nights. I'd love to help cook.

Often the stations will have used boxes that they'll let you use for free.

There is a $10 fee to check a boxed bike, besides the cost of the box. So

 Peter,

The box is $15 and yes it's checked luggage. You can only do checked
luggage from certain (large) stations. It is recommended to call the
station and ask if they have boxes tape. The pathlesspedaled recommends
bringing a black Sharpe to write on the box tape. When I looked into
traveling with my bike from the Bay Area it's all buses out of the city
that run you to the Coast Starlight et al.

How does that work, is the box considered checked luggage? If not is
 there an extra charge? Thanks.

 Doug,

I was just about to email a pathlesspedaled. Do you know the length
dimension of the Amtrak bike box? I now have the Albastache bars on the
Atlantis and I kept the cables somewhat tight to the bars. I can rotate
them but removal would be near impossible. I'd like to measure the bike
length with the bars turned and check against the box dimension.
Otherwise I'd need to re-wrap the bars!

The Amtrak packing process is super user friendly. The boxes are
HUGE. Remove the pedals. Turn the bars 90 degrees. Roll bike into
box. No wheel removal or other futzing. Nitto drops with bar end
shifters fit but I may have loosened the clamp to allow rotation.
Check out a box at Union Station. You'll be amazed. I think you do
need to check luggage well ahead of train arrival like you say you
don't want to be jammed for time.

Anyone have a space for me potentially Sunday night around Oakland
