Re: Purchasing a new system

2001-01-24 Thread Julia Frizzell

I'm not planning on taking the discussion offlist, though I've had a
few responses offlist, and those have recommended Ecrix or AIT, so
those are the leading contenders.

My boss is really leery of Ecrix, no matter how much I push it. She's
worried that, should something happen to the company in two years or
so (since they're the only one doing this kind of tape/drive now), we
won't have the $$ in our budget to purchase a whole new system. I
keep working on her. :)

There was a thread that went around a couple of months ago with price
comparisons for all of these different media types (including hardware and
media) but I'm sure it's already outdated. The VXA drive from Ecrix looked
like it had potential for a smaller setup due to it's price of drives and
media. The media also looks very reliable according to the material on their
web site. I am currently using DLT and it gets a little expensive to stay as
redundant as I would like to be. I've noticed that Ecrix is coming out with
larger tape libraries, Does anyone think that will make it a more viable
solution or is AIT still the way to go?

I would have to say AIT. Sony pulled the plug on the proposed DDS-5 so I
wouldn't suggest that line at all (end of product life). Also, DAT drives
have 1/5th the head life expectancy (10,000 hours instead of AIT's 50,000
  hours).

DLT would definitely be better than DAT but is faced with the same situation
as 4mm. The current best DLT is the 8000 series. It's 40GB uncompressed by
6MB/second. The Gen I version of the upcoming SuperDLT will *NOT* be
backward compatible. Are you prepared to purchase something that will not
work with the very next version of the hardware?

AIT, also made by Sony, gives you two choices (AIT-1 and AIT-2). AIT-1
(35GB/3MB/second uncompressed) inside a library costs less than $4500 and
holds 525GB uncompressed. AIT-2 is 50GB by 6MB/second (and is considerably
less than a DLT library - it's also self-cleaning, DLT is not).

AIT-2 is backward compatible (read and write) with AIT-1. You could start
with AIT-1 and upgrade to AIT-2 in the future should you need more capacity
and speed -- and use the very same library chassis.

AIT-3 (100GB by 12MB/second) is due out later this year and is backward
compatible with AIT-1 and 2. When AIT-4 hits the street two years form now
(a proposed 200GB by 24MB/second), it too will be backward compatible with
  all previous AIT generations.

DLT, up to a couple years ago, was definitely king of the hill. But in the
game of technology, no one stands paramount indefinitely. AIT has
definitely become more popular -- with a roadmap to larger/faster drives
while remaining backward compatible. I was surprised to hear the news that
DLT could not offer backward compatibility with their upcoming SuperDLT
drive. We have many DLT customers who will not be able to upgrade. In
fact, because of that, a lot of our DLT customers have moved to AIT.

Please feel free to contact me with any tech questions, I have been a
storage engineer for ten years and work with all formats daily.

  All the best!

Windows Client Question

2001-01-18 Thread Julia Frizzell

Okay, I'm going to admit my ignorance here.

We have a Mac-based server for Retrospect, and for the most part of
Mac only clients. The few Windows NT clients we have are server, and
are never shut off.

Well, we're now adding an NT machine that is not a server, and
therefore it's usually turned off at night.

I need to know in what state the machine needs to be left in order to
get it backed up. I have looked in the book, but I think this is
something that's just intuitive to Windows folk, and not to me, who
is used to Macs.

I feel silly asking this question, but I don't want to keep
experimenting until I find out what works. :)

Thanks tons in advance!

[by the way, I'm only doing document/file backing up on this machine.
No registry or program backing up.]

The 2 gb limit is damn annoying but you have to get used to it. The limit

Well, that's not entirely true -- the other night I captured 54 minutes of
video at 340x240x16, and the resulting file is almost 15Gb in size, so files
bigger than 2Gb are entirely possible.

It depends entirely on what OS you're using.

OS9 and higher supports file sizes larger than 2GB. 8.6 and lower do not.

Here's how I personally chose which tape drive to go with:

The way I figure, in order, the most important factors regarding the
tape backup system are:

1. Reliability
2. Performance
3. Ease
4. Cost

Some of these items will be in different order for other people but
I think that reliability is always the most important factor in a
backup. (To stress my point, substitute the word "parachute" for
"backup." I'm sure you'll always choose the most reliable parachute
over any other.)

Reliability: The key feature with a backup is the ability to restore
data and no tape system is 100% problem-free. But, only Ecrix makes
these ridiculous durability claims and actually backs it up with
extreme torture tests (boiling freezing tapes). This is what
really got my attention on the VXA drives.

Performance: You need to backup your users in the shortest amount of
time possible. If it takes you more than one night to create a full
backup, some users will go more than a day between backups thus
reducing your backup system's effectiveness. Plus, the less you
inconvenience your users, the less likely they'll keep "snoozing"
Retrospect when it starts a backup. But with a fast tape drive
you'll need a fast network and fast clients. Watch for the
bottleneck.

Ease: higher capacity tapes reduce the amount of tape swapping that
needs to happen during a backup or restore. If it takes 5 tapes to
perform a full backup, then it'll take 5 nights before the full
backup is done and the first incremental backup can take place
meaning that some people will go 5 days between their full and
incremental backups. Ideally, a full backup will fit on a single
tape or you'll have an autoloader.

Cost: lower = good but when computing the cost per GB, you must
factor in the cost of the tape drive as well. $7 media sounds really
appealing but weigh in drive cost, performance and storage capacity.
Below, I've computed actual cost per GB for my test scenario of
100GB total to backup, 3 storage sets.

   Tran#Tapes Total True
Model (GB) RatePrice Media Req'd Price $/GB

VXA-1 333MB/s$539 $6712 $1,343 $3.39

SC30152MB/s$438 $4121 $1,299 $4.12

Sounds reasonable. I think I'll tune in my server clock to someting similar.

And yes, if you're backing up everything to one tape, and recycling

Just checking, reverse is not true? My overnight backup is not overwritten
during the day...?

It all depends on what type of backup you're doing.

A Normal Backup appends to new data to the tape.

A Recycle Backup erases the tape and starts over.

A New Media Backup makes a new backup set on new media.

[good descriptions are on page 60-61 of the copy of the manual I
have, which I think was 4.2]

Also, which tape of the week do you save? I have two "monday tapes" that I
cyckle and I'm planning to increase that to four tapes... I'm still in
backup-tune-in-mode and I have a feeling mondays are not the best days...??

What day works best for you?

Well, I inherited the backup system from my predecessor, and I will
probably change it if we get our funding grant renewed in December.
What we do currently is this:

Week 1 - Normal backup, Monday through Thursday, on a tape for each
day. On Friday we do a recycle backup that copies everything.

Week 2 - same as Week 1, with a different set of tapes.

Weekends currently do a full server backup to hard drives. This is
one of the things we'll change with the refunding...getting an
autoloader or something to do the server backup/tape change on the
weekends.

We also use a separate tape for laptop backups during the day (as
mentioned earlier).

As it stands right now, we've just made a complete switch to new
tapes for the Monday-Thursday backups, and we started this with new
tapes in March. I should also mention that we only backup a user's
Documents folder, and they are instructed to put anything
work-related that needs to be saved in there. We also do the
bookmarks.html file. Everything else is (mostly) standard for
applications, so if there is a problem, we can restore a user
relatively easily.

Tape eating tail

2000-07-20 Thread Julia Frizzell

Hi folks!

Last night's backup stopped halfway through the process, asking for a
new tape. I was told by the previous sysadmin that the tapes should
"eat their own tails" and not ask for a new tape, but this is the
first time that we've hit the end of the tape in our new set of
backup tapes.

I don't know a lot about this, but should the tape do this? Is there
a setting in Retrospect to make it to this, or do I need to actually
start using another tape/set?

I'm using a DDS-3 APS tape drive, and just upgraded to Retrospect
4.3. We have a two-week tape rotation set, using a different tape for
each night Monday-Friday. On Friday we do a full backup set, with
incrementals during the week. The laptops are on their own backup
server set during the day.

Sorry about the newbie-type question, but I still don't have the hang
of this. :)

Odd error message

The error number is -33 (directory full). It also says it can't save

don't think that's the issue, unless somehow the snapshot is so large

1. Can I remove the activator code at the server?
2. Can I change the activator code at a client?

Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't.

Right now I don't like this feature! ;-) (To be honest, I must have missed
something because I see no point in haveing it.)

Actually, I think this (activator codes) is a *great* feature! And
one of the reasons I upgraded from 4.0 to 4.2.

What you have to do is think about it in reverse -- there shouldn't
BE anymore activator code conflicts (yay!) because Retrospect handles
all the codes in the program. It knows how many licenses you have
available, and knows how many clients you have on your system.

I do still have more than half of my clients with an activator code,
but when I add a new one or do a reconfigure on an old, I'm
constantly upgrading the client to TCP/IP (most are on AppleTalk) and
letting Retrospect handle the codes.

We've always had a password feature (IIRC) here, so I'm not sure what
the problem is. The password just keeps things secure between the
server and the client. You only use it when installing the client,
and then when you log in the first time from the server. Otherwise,
no biggie.

folders will be highlighted but not marked. When you execute the restore,
all the enclosed empty folders will be restored. No other combination of
restore types or file selection will restore any empty folders.

Be very careful when restoring. If you choose "Restore entire" or "Replace
corresponding files" in the restore method pop-up menu, Retrospect will
replace and/or delete files on the destination volume.

Please call us if you have any further questions about how to do this.

Re: Powerbook dials internet once an hour?

2000-06-27 Thread Julia Frizzell

I recently set up a backup server for a friend with a small network.
There is no internet access device on the network; instead 2 macs (one
pbook, one iMac) dial in thru built-in modems. I created a new TCP/IP
configuration (w/static addresses) for ethernet so that Retrospect could
backup via TCP/IP, and it all works. But it created a clunky scenario
for the 2 internet macs, where the users have to switch TCP/IP
configurations constantly (one for ethernet, one for PPP/internet).

Now they're telling me that ever since I did the setup, the powerbook
dials the internet once an hour. Is this because the retrospect client
is forcing a network lookup? Is there anything I should have done
differently?

In TCP/IP, is Load Only When Needed checked? You'll have to be in the
Advanced User Mode or Admin to see this option, it's under the
Options button you'll see once that's setup.

I'll leave it to the Dantz folks to respond to the Retrospect end. :)

Re: machine unresponsive after backup

2000-06-12 Thread Julia Frizzell

At 9:30 AM -0500 6/12/00, Gary R. Bernstein wrote:
I can't pinpoint this problem and I hope maybe one of you have seen it. I
have about 100 G3 or imac computers and this problem is only affecting 1
Blue and White G3. The scenario is that the user puts the computer in
Shutdown mode and leaves the computer with the bouncing retrospect logo
running. The computer gets backed up with a script set to not shutdown the
computer. The next morning the user comes in and the retrospect logo is
still bouncing (which is correct), but the mouse and keyboard are
unresponsive. We have to pull the plug or hit the power switch to reboot,
then the user gets the "you didn't shut me down properly" message.

Any ideas on why the keyboard and mouse become unresponsive.

I have tried having retrospect shutdown the computer with a shutdown
script, but that seems to crash the computer as well.

Are you using a USB keyboard and mouse? The BW G3s can use ADB as
well. I'd suggest trying one of those keyboards if you've got USB on
it now, and see if it has the same problem.

We had problems here with Macally keyboards and mice becoming
unresponsive after being left alone for a time. Had to unplug and
replug the device back in for it to be functional again. That's also
another solution. :)

Good luck!

Re: Duplicating volumes

2000-06-07 Thread Julia Frizzell

I tried to use the duplicate volume command but it won't duplicate a volume
on the same machine?? I have two drives in my servers and planned on just
using the duplicate command but retrospect won't allow it. Is there another
way or am I looking to another program?

Are you trying to clone a computer using Retrospect?

If so, I'd suggest an alternative. You can use Apple's Apple Software
Restore program to do the same thing. Contact me off-list for more
info.

I went to an Apple seminar on this (for higher ed, but probably
useful to more folks that just that) and it seems to work pretty well.

Backup Server Questions

2000-05-17 Thread Julia Frizzell

I am testing using Retrospect as a backup server during the day, to
back up our laptops so that those who use them won't have to leave
them overnight (when our regular backup script goes into operation).

We're testing it this week with a few of the laptop users, before
trying to put it into full effect. And I've run into one possible
snag.

One of our more sophisticated users was backed up in the morning, and
then restarted his computer in order to attach an external zip drive
to it, he was prompted to be backed up again.

Would this be because he restarted the computer after the backup? Or
perhaps because he added another volume to his desktop (the zip
disk)? Or was it just a fluke?

Thanks in advance!
