Re: Purchasing a new system
I'm not planning on taking the discussion offlist, though I've had a few responses offlist, and those have recommended Ecrix or AIT, so those are the leading contenders. My boss is really leery of Ecrix, no matter how much I push it. She's worried that, should something happen to the company in two years or so (since they're the only one doing this kind of tape/drive now), we won't have the $$ in our budget to purchase a whole new system. I keep working on her. :) At 12:56 PM -0500 1/24/01, Tim David wrote: I can't speak for everyone but I hope you keep this discussion on the list. If it does happen to go off-line, I would greatly appreciate a copy of the final thoughts. There was a thread that went around a couple of months ago with price comparisons for all of these different media types (including hardware and media) but I'm sure it's already outdated. The VXA drive from Ecrix looked like it had potential for a smaller setup due to it's price of drives and media. The media also looks very reliable according to the material on their web site. I am currently using DLT and it gets a little expensive to stay as redundant as I would like to be. I've noticed that Ecrix is coming out with larger tape libraries, Does anyone think that will make it a more viable solution or is AIT still the way to go? thanks, Tim Stephen Jones wrote: I would have to say AIT. Sony pulled the plug on the proposed DDS-5 so I wouldn't suggest that line at all (end of product life). Also, DAT drives have 1/5th the head life expectancy (10,000 hours instead of AIT's 50,000 hours). DLT would definitely be better than DAT but is faced with the same situation as 4mm. The current best DLT is the 8000 series. It's 40GB uncompressed by 6MB/second. The Gen I version of the upcoming SuperDLT will *NOT* be backward compatible. Are you prepared to purchase something that will not work with the very next version of the hardware? AIT, also made by Sony, gives you two choices (AIT-1 and AIT-2). AIT-1 (35GB/3MB/second uncompressed) inside a library costs less than $4500 and holds 525GB uncompressed. AIT-2 is 50GB by 6MB/second (and is considerably less than a DLT library - it's also self-cleaning, DLT is not). AIT-2 is backward compatible (read and write) with AIT-1. You could start with AIT-1 and upgrade to AIT-2 in the future should you need more capacity and speed -- and use the very same library chassis. AIT-3 (100GB by 12MB/second) is due out later this year and is backward compatible with AIT-1 and 2. When AIT-4 hits the street two years form now (a proposed 200GB by 24MB/second), it too will be backward compatible with all previous AIT generations. DLT, up to a couple years ago, was definitely king of the hill. But in the game of technology, no one stands paramount indefinitely. AIT has definitely become more popular -- with a roadmap to larger/faster drives while remaining backward compatible. I was surprised to hear the news that DLT could not offer backward compatibility with their upcoming SuperDLT drive. We have many DLT customers who will not be able to upgrade. In fact, because of that, a lot of our DLT customers have moved to AIT. Windows Client Question
Okay, I'm going to admit my ignorance here. We have a Mac-based server for Retrospect, and for the most part of Mac only clients. The few Windows NT clients we have are server, and are never shut off. Well, we're now adding an NT machine that is not a server, and therefore it's usually turned off at night. I need to know in what state the machine needs to be left in order to get it backed up. I have looked in the book, but I think this is something that's just intuitive to Windows folk, and not to me, who is used to Macs. I feel silly asking this question, but I don't want to keep experimenting until I find out what works. :) Thanks tons in advance! [by the way, I'm only doing document/file backing up on this machine. Reliability 2. Performance 3. Ease 4. Cost Some of these items will be in different order for other people but I think that reliability is always the most important factor in a backup. (To stress my point, substitute the word "parachute" for "backup." I'm sure you'll always choose the most reliable parachute over any other.) Reliability: The key feature with a backup is the ability to restore data and no tape system is 100% problem-free. But, only Ecrix makes these ridiculous durability claims and actually backs it up with extreme torture tests (boiling freezing tapes). This is what really got my attention on the VXA drives. Performance: You need to backup your users in the shortest amount of time possible. If it takes you more than one night to create a full backup, some users will go more than a day between backups thus reducing your backup system's effectiveness. Plus, the less you inconvenience your users, the less likely they'll keep "snoozing" Retrospect when it starts a backup. But with a fast tape drive you'll need a fast network and fast clients. Watch for the bottleneck. Ease: higher capacity tapes reduce the amount of tape swapping that needs to happen during a backup or restore. If it takes 5 tapes to perform a full backup, then it'll take 5 nights before the full backup is done and the first incremental backup can take place meaning that some people will go 5 days between their full and incremental backups. Ideally, a full backup will fit on a single tape or you'll have an autoloader. Cost: lower = good but when computing the cost per GB, you must factor in the cost of the tape drive as well. $7 media sounds really appealing but weigh in drive cost, performance and storage capacity. Below, I've computed actual cost per GB for my test scenario of 100GB total to backup, 3 storage sets. Just checking, reverse is not true? My overnight backup is not overwritten during the day...? It all depends on what type of backup you're doing. A Normal Backup appends to new data to the tape. A Recycle Backup erases the tape and starts over. A New Media Backup makes a new backup set on new media. [good descriptions are on page 60-61 of the copy of the manual I have, which I think was 4.2] Also, which tape of the week do you save? What day works best for you? Well, I inherited the backup system from my predecessor, and I will probably change it if we get our funding grant renewed in December. What we do currently is this: Week 1 - Normal backup, Monday through Thursday, on a tape for each day. On Friday we do a recycle backup that copies everything. Week 2 - same as Week 1, with a different set of tapes. Weekends currently do a full server backup to hard drives. This is one of the things we'll change with the refunding...getting an autoloader or something to do the server backup/tape change on the weekends. We also use a separate tape for laptop backups during the day (as mentioned earlier). As it stands right now, we've just made a complete switch to new tapes for the Monday-Thursday backups, and we started this with new tapes in March. I should also mention that we only backup a user's Documents folder, and they are instructed to put anything work-related that needs to be saved in there. We also do the bookmarks.html file. Everything else is (mostly) standard for applications, so if there is a problem, we can restore a user relatively easily. -- --- Julia Frizzell [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.netspace.org/~glyneth http://www.theblackroad.org "Insert pithy quote here." -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Problems?: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

What you have to do is think about it in reverse -- there shouldn't BE anymore activator code conflicts (yay!) because Retrospect handles all the codes in the program. It knows how many licenses you have available, and knows how many clients you have on your system. I do still have more than half of my clients with an activator code, but when I add a new one or do a reconfigure on an old, I'm constantly upgrading the client to TCP/IP (most are on AppleTalk) and letting Retrospect handle the codes. We've always had a password feature (IIRC) here, so I'm not sure what the problem is. The password just keeps things secure between the server and the client. Backup Server Questions
I am testing using Retrospect as a backup server during the day, to back up our laptops so that those who use them won't have to leave them overnight (when our regular backup script goes into operation). We're testing it this week with a few of the laptop users, before trying to put it into full effect. And I've run into one possible snag. One of our more sophisticated users was backed up in the morning, and then restarted his computer in order to attach an external zip drive to it, he was prompted to be backed up again. Would this be because he restarted the computer after the backup? Or perhaps because he added another volume to his desktop (the zip disk)? Or was it just a fluke?
