...more Seems the the View Modes are stored (as configuration) but they don't work in folders. I tried to define other View Modes in Options-Preferences-Messages-View Modes and got an Access Violation Error Message. I had to kill TheBat! - seems a problem with the file config.cdb indeed. So I renamed the file and started TheBat again - the build in View Modes are set now - and it seems that they are working when clicking on them in the Preferences Menu of Folders. Scheduler: Remind later does not work
Hi, I just had the problem that an event I set to remind later did not reoccur. I had the event set to remind me of a mail to be answered at 10:00 and a reminder one second before the event starts. I did not have the time to work on that email at 10:00, so I clicked remind later 5 minutes. TB warned me that the notification starts after the event. Change notification time?. I clicked no, because being notificated 5 minutes later is exactly what I want. The alert popup disappeared, but 5min later nothing happened! So I made another test and this time in the dialog Change notification time? I clicked Yes. This simply brought me back to the alert popup. Errrm...? Am I supposed to open the event, change the event time and save it again??? Is this a bug in the current beta? Or what would be the correct way to be reminded again after 5 minutes? default charset
Hi all, is there any suggestion what charset is best to use as default? (I'm from Germany so 99,99% of the mostly German and English mails are written and recieved in latin letters.) And a TheBat! specific question: Is it useful to force a charset when answering to mails or keeping to the charset the original mail was? And what does the option default charset in the folder properties box do? Is this the charset which is used when creating a new message or replying a message? While you wrote this message, a quick test would have given you the answer. :) So, instead of answer this, I encourage you to make that test. (I hope you dont feel I am rude: I would do the same to my daughter: let her explore things to make her _better_.) Sure, I could try but there are two reasons I did not: 1) I get asked all day about computer problems so in this case I just behave like my customers. It's quicker and easier, also I don't want to invent the wheel a second time. ;-) 2) I can try the behaviour of these settings and afterwards I can say how it works, maybe. Hi Vili! I just realized you are an old beta tester. Strange questions... I thought somebody is lost. ;-) As said in the other message I am subscribed to all lists but I usually only read this list and also I only write in this list, from time to time. I'm more like a passive beta tester and only write when something really matters to me. is there any suggestion what charset is best to use as default? (I'm from Germany so 99,99% of the mostly German and English mails are written and recieved in latin letters.) At the moment I'm using Latin 9 (ISO) but I was thinking about changing this to Unicode (UTF-8). No real reason given but UTF-8 seems to be the future as many applications and operating systems are changing from ISO to UTF-8. I use the same charset to reply mails that I got. So what is your default charset? You replied to my message by using us-ascii as charset. Also I noticed that my first message does not have any charset at all in the message header?!? I wrote in Latin 9 (ISO), h...?!? And a TheBat! specific question: Is it useful to force a charset when answering to mails or keeping to the charset the original mail was? I think, in English/German mails, it is not an issue... I think, if you would have Chinese, Cyrillic contacts, that would be an issue. As I wrote, I'm not a real specialist with charsets. I just noticed that there must be something around when for example Debian changed from ISO-8859 to UTF-8 with the last release. Also MySQL-Server changed from ISO-8859 to UTF-8. There must be a reason for this so I asked myself if it is useful or not doing the same with my email message format. Re: How to recover messages?
Hi Paul! MS As you can see, I use OTFE. TF Bad choice. MS Is there a trick? ;-) TF Use plain. OTFE doesn't seem to support recovering the messages. At TF least that is my experience with Voyager, have tried many ways. Poor advice for someone who has the potential of compromise. I have customers around the world using OTFE with success. The reason I am using OTFE is because I'm also using TB! on my notebook. I tought it might be better to encrypt the mail database instead of encrypting the whole hard drive because of performance and other reasons. My new notebook now offers hardware encryption so OTFE might be outdate for me but I really can understand the argument Thomas brought up. OTFE is very useful for many people. But it seems to be that OTFE isn't fully developed when looking onto database recovery. -- Regards, Martin The Bat! v4.0.18.6 powered by Windows Server Longhorn Server 4.0 6.0 Build 6001 Service Pack 1 ConCarne cooks best since 1998 http://www.concarne.org smime.p7s Description: S/MIME Cryptographic Signature Current beta is 4.0.18.6 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re: default charset
Hi Peter, and first of all thank you for all the information about this character set stuff you are providing. Very interesting and also helpful. Sure: for e-mail there is a method to declare the used character set, but not for text files ... And if used commonly for text products, why stick with an old system for e-mail? :-) So: let's switch and show the world: we're not dinosaurs, we use not only a modern MUA, but also see the advantages of a modern character encoding system ;-) I also like being a pioneer and I also like it using new fancy stuff. So I fully agree with your words. But is this the right thing to do? The question is what charset is the best to use to be compatible with most of the other guys on the internet. I'm not talking about Windows 95 users who might run into problems but I'm talking about normal users with Outlook (Express) or Thunderbird or webmail client users. Do most of the modern mail clients support UTF-8 and is this the first choice for mail encoding or should we stick a little bit longer to ISO-8859? -- Regards, Martin The Bat! v4.0.18.6 powered by Windows Server Longhorn Server 4.0 6.0 Build 6001 Service Pack 1 ConCarne cooks best since 1998 http://www.concarne.org smime.p7s Description: S/MIME Cryptographic Signature Current beta is 4.0.18.6 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: default charset
Hi all! My mail header looks like this: Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary0173761011== Maybe because of the S/MIME certificate. I will send this mail without S/MIME. Hello Ian, I think I have worked out why there are two entries in Task Manager under applications, but some don't see it. If you have your preferences set to Do not put The Bat! to Task Bar, then you will only see one entry in Task Manager Applications tab. Thanks a lot Ian, that was awfully helpful! Hi Maxim, is there some problem with the internal backup? I discovered that TB was backing up my data! Interesting because I never used the internal backup routine, also I never configured anything to make an automated backup. Where are the backup files stored? I was not able to see any destination folder or anything like that. I upgraded to 4.0.14.9 now but I did not read anything about this in .8 and .9 release information. Re: Address Autocomplete
Hello Thomas, Thanks for jumping in, as intended. You quoted me and wrote: MS It looks like it's the last used address on top. Do you all think MS this is a logical way to sort a list where you search an address to MS delete or one that you can't remember because you used it a long time MS ago, maybe? PMFJI. I think this is the logical way. The most recent address is actually most likely the one that I use most often, and therefore most likely the correct address. MS I'd prefer to have it sorted alphabetically. Please no! I would ensure that it always shows a non-desired address first. I think I would disable autocomplete from history then (and grieve for it). I think this is a misunderstanding, because in the email before that I wrote: MS I can, however, delete the entry this way when I use the above MS mentioned button on the right side of the address field to open the MS list, go down with the cursor key and hit enter. MS MS BTW: This list shows all entries in a non alphabetic order, so it can be MS hard to find the entry to delete. What order is used there? So I thought it was obvious that I did *not* mean the list that pops up as soon as you start typing (let's call it the autocomplete list). There, I agree, the last used item should be on top. Instead I meant the list of manually entered addresses (let's call it the manual address list, that's the one that opens when you click the down-arrow-button on the right of an address field). I think an alphabetic list would make more sense there, since this is just a list of all addresses I ever typed in manually, so it would be more easy to find an item. Or am I getting something wrong here? MS Hm, but I guess that's something that depends on taste and the way MS you use that list. I use it only to delete erratic or unused MS entries. And I use the autocomplete function to autocomplete email addresses - there you see how people use it differently. ;-) That's right again. I too use the autocomplete list to autocomplete, and the manual address list for managing manually entered addresses ;-) -- Martin TB! 4.0.14.7 on Windows XP 5.1 Service Pack 2 Current beta is 4.0.14.7 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Hello MAU, You are darn right! I was pretty sure that worked or at least it did in the past. But I am now not sure because, since a long time ago, I only auto-complete from AB and not History. Re: Address Autocomplete
Hello Art, I'm not sure when it stopped working in the 4.0 process, but you were able to delete addresses that appear in the Autocomplete drop down box in the To, CC, BCC fields in a message. Previously, all you had to do was scroll down with the down arrow, and hit delete on the one you wanted to delete. I am not sure what you mean by down arrow: the cursor down-key on your keyboard or the TB!-button on the right side of the address-field with the arrows pointing downwards? Here I can NOT delete an entry when I start typing the first letters, the list pops up and I use the cursor to go down the list, and hit delete. I can, however, delete the entry this way when I use the above mentioned button on the right side of the address field to open the list, go down with the cursor key and hit enter. Re: Address Autocomplete
Hello MAU, It looks like it's the last used address on top. Do you all think this is a logical way to sort a list where you search an address to delete... If I know which address I want to delete, I just start typing it in the corresponding field and the drop down list will open displaying only those addresses that match what I have so far typed. At any moment, I can use the down arrow key to get into the list, scroll if needed, and delete. Yes, that would be nice, and that is exactly what's not working here and on Art's computer! As soon as the list opens automatically (and not by me pressing on the button on the right) I can't delete an entry! ...or one that you can't remember because you used it a long time ago, maybe? Re: How to create a german CSAPI user dictionary (was: Add words to german CSAPI not possible (was: Re: 4.0.14.3))
Hello MAU, So I had a look at your registry settings (thanks for sending those along) and noticing that while your settings had a key with the correct locale id for each language ( 1034 for Spanish-Spain, 1033 for English-United States) the registry key my file was registered in had a key of 7, obviously not a valid locale. Did you have CSAPI German selected as the speller language when you created the user dictionary? No, there was no option for that. Only a list of languages, and, funny enough, german three times. But I tested all of them, and none worked. What finally made it work was something you mentioned in one of your earlier mails about the subject, namely some code in the first line of the .dic file. So I looked at the american english dictionary and found in the first line: #LID 0 I added this to my CSAPI_DE_UD.dic and voilà! It works! a valid locale. None of my CSAPI user dictionaries include any numeric or alphanumeric code in the first line, they are just a plain text list of words, one per line. What I am guessing happened to you is that you started with a completely empty user dictionary while I did Import my old user dictionaries right after creating the new ones. That's right, that's the way I did it. Again, my guess is that if right after creating the dictionary you had added a first word from the same dialog, it would have worked. I think that the '#LID 0' is just taken as the first word in the dictionary and it is probably displayed as such if you do a Spell Checker/Dictionaries and select your CSAPI German one. Yes, that is well possible. The '#LID 0' does, however, not appear in my list of words. So I think it's even more easy to - create a textfile with the line #LID 0 in it Yes, it seems easier but with the 'risk' of having to create several Registry keys manually. And also, #LID 0 is not needed, just one (any) word that you want to be in your user dictionary. So I looked at the american english dictionary and found in the first line: #LID 0 I forgot to ask, which American English dictionary? Because I have: #LID 1033 1 89 (in accent.tlx) #LID 24941 (in correct, tlx) #LID 1033 1 1017 (in Ssceam.tlx) #LID 24941 (in userdic.tlx) Neither of them...alongside with the new german dic I also created an American English one, and when I looked into that file it had the '#LID 0' in it. So to me it seems like this is a miracle that only the developers can work out. I don't even think we can file a useful bug report, because what we did and what worked does not follow a logic principle. Maybe let's file a report for the greyed out buttons, and then we check if these are working correctly and creating the right registry keys. Can you do this? You are much quicker as I am I guess... Hello MAU, When I copy some text from the preview pane and then 'Past as Quotation' I get an extra character at the end of the quoted paragraph that is displayed as a square. The new Editor Font Selection with Profiles: Problems with reading HTML-Mails
Hello Tbbeta, I am having trouble with the display of received HTML Mails since 4.x. Let me explain: I have a fixed width pixel font set for writing and reading text mails (profont http://www.tobias-jung.de/seekingprofont/) that works only in 8px size. In 3.99.29 it was used for all text-only display, and HTML-Mails without font definition were displayed using another font, because there were different settings for MicroEd/Plain Text and HTML/Windows. But since 4 there is only one font definition, divided into different sets for different locales. That's good idea, but it has the disadvantage that the same font is now used for displaying plain text and html-text (without font definition). This has the effect that my fixed width font is used for normal text in HTML-Mails (which it shouldn't), and the size also differs from what I defined in the settings, so its near to unreadable. I'd rather not switch the font because is is so perfectly readable. So I switched to display HTML/Text Emails as text first as a temporary workaround. But what I'd prefer was another setting in preferences - viewer/editor - profiles - [profile] that allows me to set Plain Text or HTML (or both) for a profile, in addition to the locales/languages selectable right now. What do you think? Maybe I am the only one having that problem. And please: no font discussion now, I searched for fonts to read plain text and program code on the net long enough to be sure I am using the font that suits me best...! ;-) -- Martin TB! 4.0.14.3 on Windows XP 5.1 Service Pack 2 Current beta is 4.0.14.3 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

How to create a german CSAPI user dictionary (was: Add words to german CSAPI not possible (was: Re: 4.0.14.3))
Hello MAU, First of all let me say how much I appreciate your efforts and time you use to help me. Ritlabs and this list can count themselves lucky to have someone like you on the messageboard. You've helped me so many times already...that beer deal still active? ;-) Yes, but it may not be straight forward (I'll explain why), let's see if I can lead you to it. Your explanation was absolutely perfect, and while it did not work here it surely pointed me into the right direction. Heres what I did: I (as suggested by you) keep older TB versions, so it was no problem to return to 3.99.29 and start the dialog, select New File, enter the filename, close the dialog. The dictionary appeared (strangely enough as Language: any beside the select box) in 3.99. But it did not work: it got lost when I reopened 3.99, and was not available in 4.0. The dic file was empty and I could not add words to it, no way. So I had a look at your registry settings (thanks for sending those along) and noticing that while your settings had a key with the correct locale id for each language ( 1034 for Spanish-Spain, 1033 for English-United States) the registry key my file was registered in had a key of 7, obviously not a valid locale. So I changed it to 1031 (German - Germany) but still no luck. What finally made it work was something you mentioned in one of your earlier mails about the subject, namely some code in the first line of the .dic file. So I looked at the american english dictionary and found in the first line: #LID 0 I added this to my CSAPI_DE_UD.dic and voilà! It works! So I think it's even more easy to - create a textfile with the line #LID 0 in it - create a registry key under [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!\CommonSpeller with the locale ID for the desired language (see http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/0h88fahh.aspx for those) - add a REG_DWORD (DWORD Value) named count in it, set the value to 1 - add a REG_SZ (String Value) in it named File #1 with the path to the file created in step 1. Hm, not really easy. But for me that worked... So thanks again for helping. In maintainance centre TB showed two damaged folders and said that it was able to recover messages. The folder in the TB folder list shows zero messages, also after restarting TB. When taking a look into the folder directory I see the following files: MESSAGES.BCK MESSAGES.EBB MESSAGES.EBI MESSAGES.IBK As you can see, I use OTFE. The first two files should contain the messages. I tried to import both files to another folder but wasn't able to do this, 0 messages imported. Is there a trick? ;-) -- Regards, Martin The Bat! v4.0.12.2 powered by Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition 5.2 Build 3790 Service Pack 2 ConCarne cooks best since 1998 http://www.concarne.org smime.p7s Description: S/MIME Cryptographic Signature Current beta is 4.0.14.0 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Hello, it would be good if there would be a possibility to overrule invalid or outdated Certificates. Like with other mailers there should pop up a warning and a question what to do. More and more newsletters are not readable without showing the pcitures. 3. Account like in OE (example: one Incoming folder for couple Accounts) No go. If it is optional I don't mind. But that is one of the reasons I never would use Outlook as mail client for more than one account. I simply need the separation of the incoming accounts. If you really do want that then make a gerneric incoming folder and define a filtering rule. 4. Improved backup and folder/message maintenance (.bin files problems) 5. RSS native support Would be nice to have. Also like newsgroups. But let's focus on the main task of The Bat: mails... ;) 6. better IMAP 7. better calendar and exchange support At least a calendering feature that supports WEBDAV or similar protocols. That also would make it possible to use ZIMBRA as mailserver. 8. Linux version Would be nice too, but I think when The Bat runs via Wine it also is fine, isn't it? 9. ldap v3 with TLS/SSL More important is that you would have the choice even to override invalid protocols (in case one is expired or something like that). What I expect: 1. Bugfixes Of course. 2. News and RSS native support Would be very nice. 3. HTML tamplates and pictures At least the pictures are a MUST. 4. PocketPC version with synchronization As I don't have a pocketPC version... However this feature isn't as important as it looks like. When you have an IMAP functionality then it is enough for the mails. However there should be a possibility to synchronise Calendar and Contacts. But I don't think that this is a task for the mail client. This better is implemented on the mailserver (e.g. synchronisation with Active Sync over the air). 5. Mouse gestures Well, I do like them but I never missed them in The Bat... 6. ACAP implementation for auto-choose best secure connection to server Nice to have. But I also didn't miss that yet... -- Best regards, Martinmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Current beta is 3.99.29 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re: The Bat! 4.0
Hi Gleason! Hasn't everyone seen this? Well maybe not, so here it is from the Ritlabs website: The largest-scale changes were made in The Bat!’s interface. Users will see a totally new program. [...] Sounds fancy and supports exactly what I wanted to say: A lot of cosmetic fixes and some fancy bright new colorful stuff but old issues aren't fixed. I think that a state of the art modern interface should come with state of the art features like IMAP and newsgroups ability. The last time I tried IMAP it did not work as it should, see here in the group. I especially had problems with filters and stuff like this. Also some other issues which makes IMAP completly unusable for me. Funny is that I paid for IMAP when I bought v2. Plus plus plus. But I'm really tired of talking this all and all over again. I'm complaining every six months or so about the company's politics and the priority of issues, bugs and stuff like this and it seems that I am the almost the only one who isn't happy with this. I agree that the TB interface should be state of the art. This is important for a lot of (new) customers. But don't forget the tons of to-do's you can see in the bug tracker and in the list of long promised features. -- Regards, Martin The Bat! v3.99.24 powered by Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition 5.2 Build 3790 Service Pack 2 ConCarne cooks best since 1998 http://www.concarne.org smime.p7s Description: S/MIME Cryptographic Signature Current beta is 3.99.24 | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Ok, as there is no answer i had a look arround. Seams that developer of plugins need to BUY, yes to BUY such a certificate. Folks are you joking? Most developer don't can't afford to buy certificates, meaning that the best plugins will not anymore available for TheBat! 4.x If this is true TheBat! is going back to the 18th century. There are thousands of users out there which won't be able to use some very efective and beloved plugins anymore. Special the German comunity developed some very good plugins. The problem is that Ritlabs is limiting his own program. Reducing TheBat! usable only with comercial plugins. Till know the best plugins come from private developers. I can't undertsand this step at all. -- Ciao Thomas Using: TheBat! 3.99.24 System: Windows XP Build 2600 Service Pack 2 PGP:Key-ID: 0x70D9F03B Visit: TheBat!
