Re: External cookie file

2013-11-09 Thread Rick
For me, always using plaintext, the \n for a line break works correctly. So
I'm guessing memory serves you correctly.

Same here - never had a problem with it. although I HAVE use /n and had
unexpected but correct results :))) Make sure you are using notepad to create
the text file. If you are using something else you might want to see what code
page it is saving in. I don't know that it matters with the cookie file, but
with BATCH files if you save them in UTF-8 they will not run, they must be
saved as DOS text. I use a notepad replacement where that can be an issue

CW Thanks Stuart, the more I look at View Modes, and tabs the more
CW confused I get. The whole thing needs a rethink, there are far too
CW many means of accessing the menus for these, and seemingly no rhyme
CW nor reason in what overrides what. I have used The Bat! for very
CW many years, and generally it's superb, but View Modes, Global View
CW Modes, Folder View Modes and now Tabs. What a hodge podge of
CW disparate menus, it needs sorting! I have now managed to lock up TB!
CW messing with these, it *appears* using Tabs it will try and select
CW more than one tab at a time, and also seems to get its knickers in a
CW twist balancing Tabs and View Modes and deciding which to use.

The one thing I learned early on, was to set Global View Mode to No View
 Mode

No View Mode it just takes over everything.

Same here. I create my own and use them where appropriate

add these folders to the Ccleaner's OPTIONS / INCLUDE. You don't need
to do it that way, just open the data folder and empty everything in

Mine is located at C:\ProgramData\Application Data\The Bat!\cache

GB Installed TB on a new computer and am now having a problem using it
GB with Chrome as a browser. With Chrome as my default browser, clicking

GB already open in the background. If Chrome is already open there is no
GB problem.

GB If I use Firefox as my default browser, email links work perfectly
GB whether Firefox is open or not. (I haven't tried it with IE.)

GB This sounds like it might be a Chrome problem and not TB, but I can't
GB find any references to this particular kind of blank page problem in a
GB Google search.

GB I had been running TB version 4.22.44.2 on my old computer and that's
GB what I installed on my new machine, restoring all my old settings from
GB a TB backup. The problem wasn't there on the old PC (also running Win
GB 7). I upgraded The Bat! to ver. 5.4, thinking that might cure things,
GB but it didn't.

GB Any ideas on what to look for? I suppose I could just go back to
GB using Firefox, but that's kind of a cop-out -- and I really prefer
GB Chrome these days.

I use Chrome and can't confirm that

You can go to
Control Panel\Default Programs\Set Associations
An make sure HTTP and HTTPS are associated with Chrome

On trick that might work is to open Internet explorer and let it take
all the settings, then close it and reassign them to Chrome and see if
it helps. Other than clearing the cache folder in the bat's data, I
can't think of anything in the Bat that would cause that in Chrome

Not that I know of. You must resize the pics outside of The Bat before you
attach them. You can make the inline graphics appear smaller by dragging the
edges, but that doesn't change the file size. If you use windows to send them,
you can make it resize them at that time

installed StartIsBack for the old Start Menu driven UI. With the new Start
Screen and StartIsBack I actually am beginning to like more than the old
Windows UI whether you talking about WinXP Pro or Windows 7.

I went form XP to Windows 8. We installed a start menu program and
uninstalled it in about 10 minutes. It comes up in the RT interfaces and you
just click the desktop icon. I don't miss the old start menu at all since the
program search is so great. I keep a few RT icons close because it makes sense
to my workflow and I have a Stuff folder with shortcuts in it that I use
often and want all in one place. The new interface is actually easier to use
than the old start button IMO

I deal with a lot of graphics both as attachments and inline. The easiest way
to do it is to COPY the graphics to a work folder then resize them and send

RT Moin Rick,

I am upgrading to 64 bit Windows 8. Any advice or things I should
 watch for?

RT Nothing special. If you want to use File History make sure to put the
RT mail base into documents and not into %APPDATA%.

If possible I am going to use 2 logins (one for my wife).

RT You really should do that.

If the Bat is loaded twice (once in each login) does that make any
issues of which I should be aware?

RT With the normal setup that should work fine.

I would LIKE to have both profiles accessing the same database as I
do all the maintenance and process all the spam

RT That might be a problem. But only if both users are logged in at the
RT time. Which will likely happen with the shiny new device...

Thanks for the reply! Is there any downside to operating on the same
mail folder as long as we are not both accessing it at the same time?
I would REALLY hate to split her stuff off

If you put it in an %APPDATA% directory or in a Documents directory (under one
of the user accounts) then the other user won't be able to access that

Upgrading to win 8 questions

2012-11-28 Thread Rick
I am upgrading to 64 bit Windows 8. Any advice or things I should
watch for?

If possible I am going to use 2 logins (one for my wife). If the Bat
is loaded twice (once in each login) does that make any issues of
which I should be aware? I would LIKE to have both profiles accessing
the same database as I do all the maintenance and process all the spam

I am moving up from XP, so I don't know much :)

MR If you want an upgrade at this point, I might recommend you move to
MR Windows 7.

Any advice or things I should watch for?

MR If there's a reason you really want to move to Windows
MR 8--eventually--I'd advise waiting at least until Service Pack 1
MR (usually a good idea). What to watch for? Watch for bugs.

I am moving up from XP, so I don't know much :)

MR Windows 7 is clearly an upgrade from XP. I'm not so sure about
MR Windows 8 - much too early to tell.

Thanks for the reply. Win 8 is a done deal - it is going into a new

Re: Inbox Filter on IMAP Acct inconsistent

2012-10-26 Thread Rick
RD I still have the same problem with my

RD Inbox Filter, on one of 5, IMAP Accts being rather inconsistent about
RD filtering the incoming messages and moving them to a Common-Folder.

RD Of the other IMAP accounts, these filters are seemingly the same. A
RD message comes into myn...@mydomain.net; gets compared to address-groups
RD then moved to one of a few Common Folders.

RD This works for the mydomai...@mydomain.net as-well-as
RD mydomai...@mydomain.net.

RD Furthermore, the same incoming comparisons works (also IMAP) for
RD myn...@their-domain.net on two other accts.

RD When I highlight the particular account's Inbox and right-click and
RD choose to Re-Filter, all the evil miscreant messages are moved to their
RD respective Sorted-Folder.

RD Go Figure. Anyone have a viable solution?

I have had that on rare occasions, but can't reproduce it at will. I
can't help on that other than to suggest seeing what happens if you
rearrange the order of the filters

Re: Virtual Folders

2012-10-22 Thread Rick
AS I would appreciate it if someone could explain to me how virtual folders
work in The Bat.

AS 1. For example, is it possible to set up a rule that copies
AS every incoming message in a mail account to two folders: one
AS folder based on some criteria, such as subject, mailing list, etc,
AS and one folder that receives all messages. The latter folder
AS would allow all messages that come in at one time to be more
AS easily viewed that hunting for them among a couple dozen folders.

AS 2. Is it possible to enable messages from many different mail
AS accounts to be copied into the virtual folder?

AS Of course, I could accomplish no. 1 by leaving them in the inbox
AS and copying them as well into whatever folder I want to place
AS them. But, this takes up double the disk space for each message.
AS With a virtual folder, the message is stored only once, but is
AS also seen by the virtual folder. Lotus Notes allows for this.
AS How does it work in The Bat? I don't see a way to filter messages into a
virtual folder.

I have multiple accounts and have separate virtual folders to watch
all the Inboxes at once. The mail stays in the correct inbox, yet I
can view it and act on it in accordance with it's specific account
settings

I have another that views all the trash folders, which makes it easy
to clean out the trash each night

Yet another views all of certain color groups across all folders with
the sort by name and showing the account in which it resides

The virtual folder it basically a view of whatever you want, filtered
and sorted the way you want it

Re: v5.2.2 annoyance: x bytes of storage space released confirmation. Can't seem to disable this notification.

2012-10-06 Thread Rick
and now I'm paying for my folly.

I do a bit of manual folder management while reading email, which
often includes deleting selected messages from folders. With my
previous v4.x, the bytes saved confirmation message only appeared
when manually compacting a folder. Now it appears every time I
delete any messages from any folder! This necessitates an additional
mouse click or enter key operation to close this new and generally
useless notification. I'm glad that storage space is released, but I
don't need to be told just how much is released every time I delete a
 message!

I've looked all over the preferences, and can't seem to find a way
to disable this annoying feature. Is it possible to disable this
particular notification, and I'm just not looking in the correct place
 for the option?

Wow - I do not get that behavior. There are settings that control the
delete method (and compacting) in Preferences, Account preferences and
folder preferences.

I hope someone has a solution for you. I only replied so you would
know that this is NOT normal behavior

Re: Non-viewable pictures

2012-10-04 Thread Rick
 Greetings All,

A friend sent me an email which was supposed to contain a bunch of pictures,
none of which showed up when viewing the email in the VIEW→WINDOW SPLIT
MODE→FULL-WIDTH PREVIEW PANE. The left column in this view mode shows the
 icons
for the pictures which were a few GIFs but most were just labeled
 ATTx~1KB
where x was a number from 1 to 15. The KB size was different for each picture,
varying from less than 1KB to more than 31KB. The only icons which had
extensions were the GIFs (.gif). Clicking on a tab at the bottom of the window
would reveal each picture individually. However, when I clicked on REPLY and
 the
reply window opened, all the pictures were suddenly viewable in the reply
 window.

Anyone have any ideas as to why this would work this way?

Not specifically, but I often get graphics with the extension stripped
but the Bat can read them correctly. That is a problem with the
sender's system settings or email provider, not with the Bat. Actually
the Bat does an excellent job of interpreting these.

If all else fails, detach and add the ending JPG of GIF and see what
you get.

SB Is it possible to do that with the current version of TheBat!, or
SB could it become a feature request ?

You might consider a multi-clipboard program. 101Clips has a free
version. I use Keytext - a commercial program.

I use Arsclip which lets you make permanent clips and will pick up
graphics and save them if you wish http://www.joejoesoft.com. Grab
Rename master while you are at it as it is the BEST out there and they
both are freeware

Well, it might help if you would send every message only once! :-)

Over to others for more helpful answers. (Did you purge and compact?)

I have had times when they stay large even after purge and compact. If
that is the case, I copy all the messages to a new folder, go into the
original folder and manually delete the Files then move the messages
back which has the effect of creating a new TBB folder.

That is the long way around for sure and I have only done that when
the TBB file is still too big

Re: Make IMAP in The Bat iPad-Like?

2012-09-16 Thread Rick
Another thing I just discovered, and I wonder if you or someone else could
 test
it. I picked a folder that had over 1000 messages in it and right clicked on
 the
folder and selected empty folder. It appeared to empty the folder and it is
now in the process of downloading every message again. In other words the
 local
folder was emptied and now it is filling it up again, instead of emptying the
folder on the server and then syncing the empty folder.

Also as mentioned earlier filtering messages seems to be hit and miss.

Having just been through this ... on IMAP folder, purge and compact
does NOT work correctly. Delete all the files and then just compact
and it WILL remove them from the server.

I made a shortcut key to do that

Re: Youtube Digest Subscription Display

2012-09-14 Thread Rick
 Hello TBUDL,

When I get Youtube digests, they are not wrapped in the display
window, and the video previews are too large. It is quite
impossible to comfortably read them. I'm a new Bat! user coming
from Thunderbird. Another thing is that I just edited the message
template to include my Bat! version, but when I click New Message,
it does not include this in the signature. It did include it in
this message when I clicked the mail-to link in order to open the
   compose window.

It depends on where you have the macros to add the Bat's information.
If you are doing it on an account basis, then it will only put it in
when using that account. If you have it in the address book it will
only be invoked for that person and will override the folder or
account setting

Where do you have this macro?

Also, before you get the mods on you, you should not top post on this
list nor use HTML unless it is a must to describe an issue,

If you make an address book entry for tbudl@thebat.dutaint.com you
can add the following lines for a reply. get rid of the %QUOTES for

Re: placing a pic into the editor ? other questions from Bits

2012-07-27 Thread Rick
 #1
can we paste pictures right into TheBat! editor ?
(Abbyy Screenshot Reader will send a pic to the clipboard, then I
paste them in, jpeg or png is fine).

I do that from Snagit, but I can also drag and drop them from my
graphics program. (one at a time - more than that and they will be
attachments and not inline

 #2
While there are five filter types, nothing really corresponds to
Manual in Eudora. I like to use a two-stage filtering system, and
manual takes the whole keboodle from stage 1 to state 2 (some read,
some unread). Do you have a way to accomplish this in TheBat!
? That is .. coming in I put 20 forums into one box, then I want
them to go home to rest on a later manual filter.

Create 2 filters and make the second one manual (am I understanding
you correctly?)

 #3
the .tbb file structure, is it one big disk file (like Outlook and
the old Courier style) or is it broken down by mailboxes, like the
 .mbx of Eudora.

Each mailbox has it's own files and generally corresponds in structure
to your folder structure in The Bat

Re: Embedding jpeg image into mass mailing template

2012-07-15 Thread Rick
 Hi,

I recently posted this query, but it was buried inside another thread
and may have escaped notice, so I am re-posting to a new thread:

I need to send an email that has an embedded jpeg to everyone in an
address group. It is an invitation, that I created in MS Publisher and
saved as a jpeg file. In a prior thread it was established that in
order to send a mass mailing to an address book group so that
individual recipients see only their own address in the to field and
have individualized salutations, I needed to create a mass mailing
template. However, I want that template to have as its body the
salutation, followed by an image that is the jpeg file.

In a regular message, I can just copy and paste the image, so long as
I have the regular message set to HTML and not plain text. But, the
mass mailing template appears to be text-only. How do I insert my jpeg
invitation into the body of the mass mailing, so that when the message
is opened by the recipient, the recipient sees the image of the
invitation? Note, I do NOT wish to send the jpeg as an attachment. I
understand how to do that. I want the message itself to display the
jpeg image as part of the message. Can this be done with a mass
 mailing template? If so, how?

I JUST sent out a mass mailing - I dragged and dropped the JPG into
the template that was going out and it worked perfectly (Insert an
image will do it just as well. The mailing template should look
exactly like what you are going to send out (not counting the macros
of course)

Re: Embedding jpeg image into mass mailing template

2012-07-15 Thread Rick
R I JUST sent out a mass mailing - I dragged and dropped the JPG into
R the template that was going out and it worked perfectly (Insert an
R image will do it just as well.

This is not happening for me. Here is what I do to send out a mass
 mailing:

 1. open address book and highlight group to receive mass mailing
 2. Click on file/mass mailing using template/[specific template file
that has previously been created, let's call it X]
 3. The Create Mass Mailing dialogue box opens up
 4. With X highlighted in the drop down window, I click on Edit...
 5. The Edit Template box for X opens up.

At this point I tried to both drag and drop my jpeg into the Edit
Template box as well as copy and paste. Neither works. When I try
to drag and drop, the mouse icon turns into the international stop
 sign (circle with a line).

Do you have the template formatted to HTML?

What I CAN do is click on OK after the Create Mass Mailing
dialogue box opens up which will automatically put all outgoing
e-mails into the outbox and insert, one by one, the jpegs into these
outgoing messages. But there will be about 150 and inserting the jpegs
one by one will be very tedious.

Could it be that what you are doing is only possible with the newer
version of the The Bat? (With me using ver 4 and you using ver 5?)

I am using version 5.1.6.6 I set the template to HTML and all worked
as I said. I don't remember how v4 worked as I never made a mass
mailing back in those day - sorry

Re: adding account to two computers

2012-07-06 Thread Rick
 Hi,

We use two computers for The Bat in our home office. Each pc has an
identical account list. Each downloads mail independently from the
same servers. I recently added a new mail account to the list of
accounts on one computer. I attempted to add this same account to the
other pc by copying and pasting the account folder from one pc to the
other using windows explorer. However, when I opened up The Bat on
the second pc, the new account does not show up.

What did I do wrong and how can I fix this? Do I have to create from
scratch the new account on the second PC as well?

FWIW, both computers have the same version of The Bat: 4.0.18; the
first pc uses Windows XP Pro SP3, while the second pc uses Windows 7
 Home.

Have you tried contol-shift-alt L to see if it finds it? If so, try
creating the account on the problem machine - it should pick up the
copy that you made

Re: adding account to two computers

2012-07-06 Thread Rick
Ordinarily, when I create a new account, I have to go into properties
and change the settings for transport, since the default settings don't
work. This includes changing some of the ports, and some of the other
options as well. When I create, as you suggest, a new account on PC2
with the same name as the new account on PC1, will I still have to go in
and change those transport settings from their defaults, or, will The
Bat automatically apply the changes that I set up on PC1?

What do you think of Paul's suggestion to create a complete backup of
the new account on PC1 and then restoring this on PC2? The only reason
I see to do this is to make sure that the new account on PC2 has all of
the changed settings from the account created on PC 1.

Try creating the new account first. It SHOULD pick up the one with the
same name that you copied to that machine

How to add a double quotation to a template

quotation mark and tried it with %22 and get either nothing or a weird

Can this be done and if so how?

Try using another delimiter, like this
 %Subject=^Jigsaw Puzzle ^

The macro will recognise the first ^ as the delimter and then include
everything up to the second one.

WOW - I never knew that you could use that. It worked like a charm and
I fixed the 4 templates where it was needed and they worked flawlesssy
