I use the synchronize function between my PC and Laptop to bring my
laptop up to date before I travel.

For the initial install, I would do a backup on the PC and a restore
onto the Laptop. You may then need to change the Account settings if
you are using a different server when you are travelling.

I generally only do one-way synchronisation copying new mail from my
PC to my laptop. I have the PC set to delete mail on the server after
3 days, and the laptop to leave mail on the server and not delete. The
means that mail that I have received when away is downloaded onto me
PC. The synchronisation is fairly crude, so I prefer to avoid
transferring back from my laptop to my PC. This does mean that I have
sent mail on my laptop that is not on the PC, but I used MailBag
Assistant to make periodic archives of both mailbases to these
messages are available.

The synchronisation process is crude. Specifically, it does not
delete mail, so if you clear lots of mail on the PC and then
synchronize it with the laptop, the corresponding mail will not be
deleted. Worse, when you synchronize back to the PC, all the deleted
mail will reappear on the PC. That is why I don't do it!

Finally, some terminology. The first part of the synchronisation (1)
is done on the machine where you want to copy mail to (the laptop).
The second stage (2) is done on the PC, and the third (3) on the laptop. Allow
plenty of time! I save all the synchronization files on a shared
folder on my PC which my laptop has access to, and do it across the
network. If you have a large capacity USB memory stick then you could
use that.

Hope this helps. Personally, if I were doing the synchronisation as
frequently as you are planning to, I would consider other options,
such as IMAP. Others will be able to help here.

Not in the plain text viewer. If you de-select Use Plain Text View in

will be whatever is specified in
Options|Preferences|Viewer/Editor|HTML/Windows Editor.

I use the plain text editor, but view in Windows mode to get the

NOD Antivirus Database 3119 (20080522) Identifying TheBat as a virus

2008-05-22 Thread Julian Beach (Lists)
Hello TB! Users,

Maybe just me (running TB on Vista), but since the update to the NOD
virus signature database a short while ago, TheBat is being flagged by
NOD as a virus when it accesses rundll32.exe as "Probably a variant of
Unknown virus".

I have reported to NOD. Anyone else getting this?

Not here. It is now at Version 3120 but I have had to disable NOD to
allow me to do any work. The NOD forum has lots of messages about the
issue, which not only affect TB, some games, but also Adobe Acrobat
and the Abobe CS3 applications.

Sadly there is no response from NOD on the forums to any of the
message, which hopefully means they are working hard on a solution.

It is linked to ThreatSense, so if that is disabled then you will not

I think that you are looking at the Group feature in the addressbook.
You will see in the addressbook dialog for individuals there is an
entry for Group, so you could define a group of society members and
then use the mass mailing features to send messages to all members in

There is more information in the help files which is worth reading

The Bat! v5 Upgrade Experience

2012-01-03 Thread Julian Beach (Lists)
Hello TBUDL,

I have been using TB! for many years (12+), but have been holding off
upgrading to Version 5 because of the various problems that I have
seen reported here and on TBBETA, particularly with IMAP. I have 9
IMAP accounts, including a GMail account, so I was worried about how
well v5 would work. I thought that those of you who have similar
concerns about v5 might be interested in the results.

With the latest new version notification (5.0.30) I decided to take
the plunge. I have been very pleased with the results. Everything
continued to work as it should and the differences that I have found
so far have been positive rather than negative. In fact, there are few
obvious differences in my normal use of the software - it looks and
operates almost exactly the same way.

So, if you are holding off on an upgrade because you are afraid that
TB! v5 will not be as good as your current version, my experience is
that the upgrade is painless. If you are expecting a new look and feel to
the software, then v5 is probably not for you, however!

If you don't *have* to use TB!, what about other software to do this.
Have a look at http://mach5-mailer.com/products/mailer/features.php

There is a free version of this software, which limited the mailing to

You could also try the following, which looks like it uses the default

Displaying the Euro Symbol

2004-03-05 Thread Julian Beach (Lists)
Hello TB! Users,

I get mail from a daily news email that includes currency symbols.
Whilst the GBP and USD signs appear as they should, the Euro symbol
always appears as a code, as below:

>
> Eircom, Ireland's largest telecommunications operator, set a price

Is this a problem with the email message itself, the Character Set I
am viewing it in, or the font?

(Of course, if the problem is with my settings, then you may see Euro
symbols above, and not the code. The code is & #8364; - I have
added a space after the & to stop it being interpreted.)

That is the probable answer. £ and $ are not special characters, so
would not need to be shown this way. The ¤ sign appeared fine in your

The other thing to remember to TB! synch is that it is one way each
time, that is, when you run the first stage of the synch on the laptop
it compares the laptop with the PC and then copies any messages on the
PC but not the laptop onto the laptop, but will not copy messages not
on the PC from the laptop. This means that you will have to run the
synch twice to get a full synchronisation of both machines. The other
thing to note is that the process only copies files, but does not
delete, so if you have deleted a load of messages on the laptop, and
then run a PC, they won't be deleted from the PC and could be copied
back to the laptop.

The steps you list sound correct. There are a couple of things you
could check:

- Are all the accounts you want to synchronize selected? It sounds
obvious, but I missed an account on a few occasions!

- Synchronisation will only work between identical folder structures and
it will not, as far as I know, create folders on the destination
machine if they do not already exist. The same appears to go for
accounts.

- You need to make sure that both machines are using the same files! I
spent a frustrating 1/2 hour on one occasion wondering why my new
messages would not appear on the target machine until I realised that
I had not connected the network cable, so the machine was using an old
synchronisation file!

Hope this helps.

The problem with this is that you do not have a history to roll back
to, for example, you delete some vital messages from the message base,
but don't realise for 1 day. By then, your backup will have been
over-written several times.

I use 12-Ghosts Backup for things that I need a history of. You can
set items to continuously back up, creating a copy once a minute,
hour, day, week and month. This means I have a history of revisions
going back as far as I want. This could be difficult with a complete
message base (unless you have a *very* big hard disk), but you could do
it on a particular account or folder.

Is this linked to your anti-virus software? I get the same, but I
think that the progress bar is triggered when the message is first
"seen" by TB! but that TB! does not get the rest of the messsage from
the antivirus software (in my case Norton AntiVirus 2004) until the

There are two reasons you might wish to use X-Ray. One is that is
allows you to modify the headers in your email messages - it is a
quite sophisticated program in this respect.

The other reason is if you are using TB! on a laptop, for example, and
may need to send messages through a variety of SMTP servers. In this
case you tell TB that the SMTP server is Localhost (X-Ray) and X-Ray
can either manually or automatically choose the SMTP server. For
example, I used X-Ray to choose between a Work (Exchange), Home (DSL)
and Mobile (Dial-up) SMTP server, which it did automatically depending
on the IP address the laptop had been allocated.

I don't do this now, as my ISP has an option of Authenticated SMTP, so
I can send mail through my ISP's SMTP servers whichever network I am
connected to.

Hope this helps!

I cannot confirm this. Double-clicking on the HTML file results in the
opening warning. If I choose YES (to save the file) I can then open it
in my browser (Mozilla) and it will open the message and the remote
images, showing the local file location as the URL

Answering NO will open the message in Mozilla and get the remote
images, but shows TB's temp directory as the URL
(file:///C:/DOCUME~1/*~1.***/LOCALS~1/Temp/bat/4C6370E5.html).
Perhaps it is an IE problem?

Is the problem with Message.html attachments that you open directly
from TB (without saving first) or do you get the same problem with
messages that you have previously saved? If the latter, then it would
suggest that it is a system default browser problem rather than TB! as
TB! would not be involved.

What you could try is importing the data via Outlook Express. It is
not as simple as a direct import, but the transfer between Outlook
and Outlook is painless.

I am not sure why there should be a problem with Exchange, but is
guess the problem is that the message storage if you are using Outlook
with Exchange is different, and messages and data are held on the
server, rather than locally.

I have installed TB! in circumstances similar to yours without

In think that given the problems you are having, I would be tempted to
download the TB! installation program direct from Ritlabs to your

the TB executable to the laptop, rather than the installation package,
which is why you are having problems.

I used x-ray for this purpose on my laptop, but found that after some
changes to the network at the office, which uses Exchange, the
connection to the smtp server for the office was always rejected when
it went via X-Ray, although it worked perfectly when I entered exactly
the same information directly into TB!s smtp settings.

I have since found that my ISP offers SMTPAUTH for use when not

This is very convenient, as I can send mail via my ISP however I am

It means that the message has been signed using PGP MIME or SMIME. You
will see a corresponding tick in the message header section of the
preview pane (the far right), and you will get details of the
signature if you click on this, assuming you have the relevant
software (PGP) installed.

I have had a look through, and I am not sure if my arrangement will
help.

I have a similar situation, with a Desktop PC and a Laptop. I use the
laptop whilst travelling, and this can use a variety of SMTP settings
depending on where I am accessing the internet from (office LAN,
mobile, or home network).

My current arrangement is to synchronize all messages from the desktop
to the laptop whenever i go away. This ensures that i have all the
messages that I send and received on my desktop machine are with me
when I go away.

I have set both machines to leave messages on the server for 3 days,
which ensures that I get the messages to both machines, and in
particular that I can leave both machines running and still collect
mail on the laptop.

If there are sent messages that I need to transfer from the laptop to
the desktop, then I occasionally do a reserve synch of sent messages
from the laptop to the desktop.

I keep the desktop clear of old messages, and occasionally backup the
desktop installation, and reinstall it onto the laptop, which brings
the messages back into synch. This does mean I lose the laptop
account settings, so I don't do it very often.

I find this arrangement quite workable. It would be better to have
true synchronisation (I use Laplink, but it does not sound like it
works at the level of the software you use), as it would deal with
deleted mail, but even Laplink struggles with this, and will attempt
to recopy deleted files and folders.

That is why I occasionally restore a backup from the desktop onto the
laptop, as this gets the message bases back into synch.

I do, but I don't have a large number of accounts (about 10) and I
don't do it very often.

> By 'reinstall' you mean Registry entries and the 'MAIL' directory?

The built-in backup routine does not include the Registry entries, so
I just restore the mail folders. I suppose that I could do this by
copying the mail directories (or even using Laplink). One problem is
that this process usually resets the filters, so they have to be
re-pointed at the correct folders again.

> Interesting, but how does LapLink keep track of what's been deleted so
> it knows to delete it from the other machine?

It does not, so it will try to copy back across the messages that have
been deleted from the laptop. Laplink does true synchronisation, so
will copy either way depending on timestamps and its own database of
synch'd files.

One of the common causes of problems with 100% resource usage is
BayesIT. If you are using it, try disabling it and see if that makes
a difference. Sometimes you will have to remove it from your system
to get rid of the effects.

It you have a search in the archive, you will find similar threads

Don't forget that Netiquette dictates that the length of the sig
should be 4-5 lines maximum. The length of your sig, particularly once
you have added BayesIT data, is well in excess of this.

Users of TB! and the RTV may not notice this, but not everyone uses
TB!, and these unfortunate people will see many lines of sig, which
they will have to manually chop in replies.

These messages are not being sent in response to any message that you
have sent to the Ritlabs News mailing list. They are coming from the
Ritlabs News mailing list, which you must have subscribed to when you
said you wanted to be sent news and annoucements from Ritlabs.

What is happening is that bounced messages to the RitLabs News mailing
list address are being sent back out to the whole mailing list. This
seems to be because these messages (I have had 3) are being bounced to
the From: address ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and not the
Sender address ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).

You can either blame the RitLabs News mailing list setup, which
probably should not be possible to reply to as the messages should
only come from Ritlabs and not from members of the list, or you can
blame the people who are bouncing messages back to the list address
and not the bounced mail address.

The evils of "Out of Office" replies!

Version 3 Bug?

2004-09-07 Thread Julian Beach (Lists)
Hello TB! Users,

I have been using version 3 (Pro) for a couple of days. Overall, it is
good, particularly the new file system, and worth buying a few upgrade
licences for (IMO).

I have found a problem with a new filter I have created (for TBBETA).
The filter is an Incoming filter, and moves incoming TBBETA messages to my
mailing lists email account into the TBBETA folder. However, when a
message arrives, the selected (active) folder view jumps from whatever
I was reading at the time to the inbox of the JBLists account. This is
OK if I am not doing anything at the time, but irritating if I am
looking through another folder (in another account) when the focus
moves.

I have also noticed that the mail ticker flashes up very briefly when
the message arrives in the account Inbox (where the ticker is enabled)
and then disappears again as the message is filtered to the TBBETA
folder (where the ticker is not enables. This does not happen for any
other messages.

Can anyone confirm these, or have I missed a setting somewhere? I have
only been subscribed to TBBETA for a day, so if there were any
messages before about these problems, I will have missed them.

There used to be a freeware version which unlimited accounts (which I

Try Options|Active Account in the message editor window, or right

I have not seen TB empty a mail exactly, but I have problems with TB!
(or something along the way that affects only TB!) changing the Part
boundaries of messages so the file names do not appear correctly.

For example, I got the following message which when the source is
viewed shows the following boundary:

> [EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@13161
> Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="Draft"
> Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

The problem is that the name should actually be "Draft Cheshire
Supporting People Eligibility Criteria v2.8.doc", but it gets chopped
at the first space in the file name, so in the Attachment panel it
appears as "Draft" and I have to rename it before I can open it. This
only happens with one organisation, which suggests a peculiarity with
their setup, but notwithstanding this, Outlook, OE and Popcorn all
report the file name properly.

Unfortunately I do not have an example downladed in another email
client at the moment - I will test it again when one next arrives -
but I recall that this content boundary only appeared to be truncated
in TB!, that it is either TB! or the interaction of TB! and something
else that is causing the problems.

I created a bug report at the time this started affecting me:

The votes are in. 7,147 votes were submitted in total, and the
results, in summary, are:

Outlook 2003 - 28%
Outlook Express 6 - 15%
Thunderbird - 13%

The Bat! came in at 1%

The votes may be more a reflection of the readership of Email
Essentials - the use of Outlook 2003 (so the most recent version of
Office) and the high percentage use of Thunderbird suggests that the
7,147 may not be a representative sample, although I could be wrong on
that.

You can read more about Email Essentials, and probably read the

I thought that the TB licence allowed it to be installed on a laptop

Synchronisation Problems

I have been having problems with Synchronisation over the last couple
of releases of TB! When I attempt stage 3 of the synchronization
process, I get file errors "Error Reading File " - if I try

with many thousands of duplicates. In my latest attempt, one of my
accounts went from 4,000 messages to 20,000 and I had to abandon the
synchronisation attempt in the end.

Is this just me? Being able to synchronize TB! between my desktop

On the subject of this, the Autocomplete drop down list does not seem

use [TAB] to select it. In TB! this moves onto the next field (CC: in

a few emails that have gone to the wrong person recently. Is just me,
or do others feel that the process if selecting items does not follow

I use Outlook in the same way that you do. You will find that Outlook
resets itself to be the default email programme on a regular basis -
many Office updates via Microsoft Update reset the default email
client, including updates of the Outlook Junk Mail list. There are
instructions on stopping this happening at the following location
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=933450 but Brian Livingstone
(http://windowssecrets.com/) suggests that it is easier to reset it
manually.

This probably means that the sending process is not completing. There
are no specific size limits in TheBat!, but your ISP may apply limits
to either email message sizes or attachment types. Can you send via a
different ISP or via Webmail?

I sometimes have this problem, but have not found a particular cause.
Try opening the message again and then putting it back into the Outbox
before sending. Also have a look at the log (Account|View Log or
ctrl+shift+A) to see if there is an explanation. Is the email address
valid? Have you sent other messages successfully to that address?

Synchronization in TB! 3.99.3 - Slow

2007-05-15 Thread Julian Beach (Lists)
Hello TB! Users,

I have just installed 3.99.3 and am doing my first synchonize between
my PC and Laptop with this version. It is really slow, and eats
resources. Has anyone else experienced this? Previous versions have
been getting faster, so this appears to be a step backwards.

I hope it is not going to be dropped - I use it all the time! I use
two computers, and I use Synchronize to ensure that the messagebase on
my laptop matches the messagebase on my PC. It is usually just a
one-way transfer across my network, from PC to Laptop - I use a shared
folder on my PC to hold the synch files.

It is a bit challenging, as synchronisation does not mean the same in
TB! as it does in, say, Laplink, where there is a transfer of files
both ways.

Basically, TB! copies messages that are not one the target machine
(the one where you run Step A) from the source machine (the one at
Step B). It is a one-way process and it only adds messages and does
not delete them. The messages have to be in the same location, so you
can end up with duplicates if your messages are moved by a filter on
one machine and not on the other.

My synch plan is as follows - an example probably helps!:

1 I want to bring my laptop up to date with messages that I have
received on my PC since I last used it. I therefore start running
the synch process on my laptop with Step 1 - the file is copied to
a shared folder on my PC, across the network, although it would
also work saving it to a usb memory stick.

2 Step 2 is run on my PC - this takes the file created in step 1 and
identifies all the messages that are on the PC but not on the
laptop, and copies them to the next Synch file.

3 The final step, Step 3, is run on the laptop. This copies all the
messages not on the laptop (in the same account/folder) into the
locations they are on the PC.

That is it - all the messages on my PC are now on my laptop.

There are a couple of things to note:

- It is assumed that the account and folder structures are the same,
and that the same filters are operating on both machines. I used to
wipe my laptop message base every few months and then restore it
from the PC to ensure that the folders and filters are the same, but
I don't bother now. If the structures are different, you will end up
  with a mess!

- The process is one way - Messages not in the machine on which you
run step 1 are copied from the machine in Step 2. If you want to do
a two-way synch you have to run Synch again, starting with the other
  machine at Step 1.

- The process does not delete messages. If I were to spend a lot of
time cleaning the message base on my laptop, and then run a synch
with my laptop at Step 1, it will copy all the messages back again.
the process only looks for missing messages and copies them.

- It does not appear to work with filters and account settings,
despite what it says. It does work with the address book however. You
have to copy filters manually, or recreate them manually.

I don't synch in the other direction (from Laptop to PC), as all the
messages are held on the server and I download them when I am next at
my PC.

I hope that this helps

Strange Email Problems 3.99.24

2007-10-29 Thread Julian Beach (Lists)
Hello TB! Users,

I am not sure that this problem is TB! related, but since it appeared
since I upgraded to 3.99.24 a few weeks ago, I thought I would ask
here.

My DSL connection goes down when I send emails with attachments. It
appears to be size related - if the message is more than around 3.9Mb
then the my DSL connection is lost at that point. The send fails, and
I have to wait for my router/DSL model to re-establish a connection.

I am stumped by this. My ISP does not appear to have any limits in
place that would cause my connection to be cut off, but my router does
not tell me much other than a log entry to say that the WAN Interface
is down. I have tried my ISP's email servers and my backup email
servers via SMPTAUTH with the same effect.

Any clues anyone?

Thanks for the response. I have done some more testing this morning
is discovered:

1. I can upload the same file using FTP without problems
2. I can send the same message using Outlook

Now going to see if the problem is caused by a combination of TB! and
my router config. I sent the message successfully yesterday from the
office using TB.

I have tested this. It appears to be a problem with The Bat! and my
Router (a D-Link DIR-655). I can send messages without problems using
my DSL modem plugged directly into my laptop. It is only when the
modem is connected to the router that I have problems.

It is totally strange!

The next test is to roll back a version or 2 of TB and see whether it
is a recent problem.

Nothing, but I woke up to see the NAV Outgoing Email scanning window

Antidote emails sound very like an urban legend, although if you are

Yes, I use the Mail Dispatcher in this way, as I have a filter to hold
mail on the server as well as the one to delete mail, so I review
the server list once a day. Not many spam messages get though, and those
that do go to SpamCop and I amend the filters as necessary.

> That is the way selective download filters work.

And very effectively, too. What I would like is an addition in the
log file for the account to say that x messages were deleted without
downloading - at the moment, it only tells me the number of messages
on the server, the number of new ones, and the number downloaded. It does not
say how many were deleted by the Kill filter.

You are right, of course: if I go back through the log, I can work
out the number of messages deleted! I think that the example I looked
at before was particularly complicated, as it included messages that
were being held on the server, as well as some downloaded.

This subject has come up before, and I have the same problem from time
to time. The problem seems to be that TB has a fairly short timeout
of 30 seconds, which is not adjustable. My ISP struggles to respond
within this timeout at peak times, so I got a lot of bleeps.

As the the solution, there is not one at present, other than turning
off the Windows sound for Exclamation. The longer term ones will
hopefully appear in TB 2.0: either an adjustable timeout; or the
ability to turn off the sound. You could always post a wish at
Ritlabs.

I would agree with this (as a paying user of SpamCop). It is probably
helpful to report things to SpamCop so that open relays and proxies get
identified, but I found that I had far more success at terminating
spammer's accounts when I did the investigating and reporting myself.

I now have a set of Kill filters that I use alongside Selective
Download, so around 40 messages a day are being deleted on the server,
and the remaining 1 or 2 I report via SpamCop.

In the sorting office, when you set up your filter, did you go to the
Options tab, and select "Regular Expressions"? Filters do not use
Regular Expressions by default. You will also have to escape with a

I am running 1.61 under Win XP Pro with Power User rights, and I don't
have any problems with periodical checking.

A couple of questions come to mind with periodical checking:

1. Are all the problems being experienced on a dialup connection?
2. Does TB start a dialup connection to do a periodical check?
3. Is there anything in the log file to indicate that TB attempted to
connect?
4. In anyone experiencing problems with periodical checking with a
permanent connection (such as a network connection or DSL)?

The answers might narrow the problem down a bit.

I think that Popcorn might do this - it works only on messages on the
server without downloading. It is no longer available from
the developers, but if you search for Popcorn you should be able to

Both swings and roundabouts are items of playground equipment, by the

victims of the risk-aware culture in the UK these days and are now
quite rare. I remember spending days trying to get the roundabout up

I don't think that you can using Selective Download, as the filters
are not that sophisticated. The way I deal with these situations is to
use a kill filter to wipe messages that I *know* I don't want, and
then use an ignore filter for all the ones that I need to
double-check. These don't get downloaded, and I can check and delete
them manually once every few days using the Message Dispatcher
(Ctrl-Shift-F2). (Crtl+3 in the Message dispatcher will mark all the
messages for deletion, and F2 will zap them, so only a couple of
keystrokes are required).

Another option could be to set up a selective download filter in both
of the accounts, set up to ingore messages for the other person, so:

Account X - Ignore messages for Account Y
Account Y - Ignore messages for Account X

When account X logs on, only messages for account X will be
downloaded, and messages for Y left on the server, and the opposite
will happen when account Y logs on.

The filter would look like this:

Account X: Detect by Entire Header
Signal String: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Advanced|Action: Ignore

Account Y: Detect by Entire Header
Signal String: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Advanced|Action: Ignore

I think that it does take longer using selective download, but I don't
think the difference is too great, because what you loose in the
downloading of the headers initially, you gain by not downloading
messages you don't want. Downloading the headers is a lot quicker
than downloading messages, particularly over a slow connection.

Databug's situation is a little different, because all of the messages
are going to be downloaded anyway so the downloading of the headers is
an additional overhead, but that increase in overall download time is
justified by the circumstances.

I use selective downloads in two specific situations - as a spam
filter on an account that gets a lot of junk mail, and when I am
travelling and downloading mail using my mobile phone, when I don't
want to download a 500K email message unless I really need to!

I had a look at the Advanced tab on the Selective Download filter, and
it has some fairly powerful options under the Detection Method section.
The main limitation seems to be that you cannot refer it to an
addressbook, but if you can define a short list of addresses, you
should be able to come up with an effective filter.

One option would be to enter all of the mailing list addresses, and
use the Detection Method that "none of strings should match", so any
messages not from a mailing list will match the filter and be killed.

Yes, Ctrl-] works whether the focus is on the message list or the body

I use synchronisation regularly between my desk-based machine and my
laptop. There are two things to note.

1. Synchronisation is *one-way* so if you have messages on each
computer, you will need to run synchronisation *twice* with each computer
as the target in turn.

2. Synchronisation does not delete anything - so it is ideal for
situations like yours, because the worse you can end up with is
duplicates, which are easy to get rid of.

The colour of incoming, unread messages, is very noticeable (bright
red, yellow or blue envelopes). It is only when the messages have been
read that the colours go pale and harder to spot.

Account Priviledges

2002-11-17 Thread Julian Beach (Lists)
Hello TB! Users,

A short while ago, I had a phone call from someone who could not get
into their account because they had unwittingly set their account
privilege to User, and TB! popped up a User/Password box when they
tried to open it. I discovered the hard way how to get back in, having
done the same myself in the process of trying to find a solution - the
account name is the user, and the password is blank.

The problem with this is that this only gives you user access to that
particular account, so you cannot then change back to Administrator
privilege. After some moments of panic (!) I got round this by using
one of my other accounts to get into TB! with, where I had
administrator privileges, and I could then set the privileges of the
account I had changed to Administrator.

What happens if you only have one account set up? If you have
selected User privilege, with the default rights (none), and without
setting up any User Groups, how do you switch back into Administrator
privileges?

Mainly because of the problems keeping filters up to date on both
installations. The result can be that messages get into different
folders on both machines, and this leads to duplicates.

The other reason is a very practical one - laptops are relatively easy
to loose or damage, so I would rather hold messages on the server for
a few days so I can be sure that I get them on my desktop PC than
depend on being able to synchronize from the Laptop.

The other thing to remember with Synchronisation is that it is a one-way
process - it makes the Installation A the same as Installation B, by
moving messages that are not on A but are on B onto A. This means
that to do a full synchronisation (matching both installations) you
have to run it twice, making different machines the target and
destination each time, if you see what I mean!

You don't say how you are replying, or what text is missing, but two
things spring to mind:

- TB! does not quote sigs in replies, so everything below the sig
delimiter will be cut (-- )

- f4 only quotes the highlighted text.

One way to get round the chopping of the sig is to use the %text macro
in your reply template. This appears to quote the whole of the
original text, including the text below the sig delimiter.

If you changes the template you use for the list, don't forget you
will need to manually trim your reply to get rid of the sig text, or
use f4 on the text you want to reply to.

If you go to the menu bar and select Account|Properties... you will be
presented with a dialogue with a tree menu. Go to Templates and click
on the +. You will then see the account templates. These will be
used for the account folders by default, so they should contain the
required macros. If they are blank, then one thing you could do is to
create a new account and then copy the templates (simply by copying
and pasting between the templates.

It could be that you have a folder template (or perhaps an address
book template, and you will find these under the properties for each
folder (or address book) (the menu Folder:Properties). You can also
cut and paste from another folder template, as above.

Synchronisation does not delete messages, but will add messages from the
source machine (the installation at step 2) that are not on the
destination (the installation at steps 1 and 3. If you have deleted
messages on the destination (or moved them to another folder), but
left them in the original locations on the source, they will be copied

I tend to do synchs one way only to avoid this, and do an occasional

According to Woody's Windows Watch, you should open the Task Manager
and look at the Process list. If you have msblast.exe running then
you are probably infected. The removal tool will remove the program
from your system - ending the process will stop it until the next

This problem rings a bell, but I cannot remember the details. I am
pretty sure that the problem is not with TB! however - I think that
the problem will be with your router, possibly with any firewall
settings you have in it, or in any software firewall you have.

You say that you can send messages with Netscape? Is this the same
message and attachment, with the router, using the same provider?

The other thing that causes a sudden disconnection of your internet

You don't have to actually install V2 now if you want to wait until

I don't think that there will be any winners to this argument. I see
TB as representing excellent value for money, and I would happily have
paid the full price for the upgrade - it is still a relatively small
cost for such a high quality product, and I see my registration fee as
a fair return to Ritlabs for their continued investment and
development of the product.

At the same time, I can see the point you and others are making. If
you don't feel that TB represents such good value for money, then you
would not be happy with the registration/upgrade fee. I can understand
this, even if I do not share it.

In the end, I don't think that Ritlabs are going to change their
minds, which is their right. After all, they know how much it has cost
to develop TB, how much they need to get in in registration fee
income, and how much they can generate from new users. The existing
user-base represents a large potential source of income, and I can see
why Ritlabs would want to tap this. It might seem unfair, but perhaps
that is just business ecomomics.

Having said that, if TB cost $150, then I would probably be arguing
with you - which just shows that it is all down to perceived value!

Thinking about it, Ritlabs are probably trying to save admin costs
with the current upgrade policy. A system based on the date of
original registration would be very costly to administer, whereas
having a fixed upgrade period makes it much easier. After the end of
the initial period, everyone gets a new licence, so no need to check
existing serial numbers and licence keys. If this method helps to
keep the cost down, then I am all for it.

If you believe that Ritlabs are a private company, and are free to do
what they want, then this approach seems to be sensible, as they are
not likely to change their minds! You don't have to want TB v2.x now,
but if you think you will after October 2003, then it is still worth
paying the $17.50 now.

Perhaps the people who have upgraded to v2 and paid the reduced price

The main issues are Palm synchronisation, the big issue finding
something that supports Date Book Categories on the Palm, as used by
DateBk5. I have tried a few programs to find something that will
work, but not, as yet, succeeded. I liked Lotus Organiser, but it did

Chapura (of Pocket Mirror fame) will write a conduit for some
alternative PIMs, as they understand categories.

I don't use T&C as my diary because I like to keep my appointments and

do. I was not very impressed with the address book!

Cost, I should imagine. TB is not a high cost product, and the costs
of providing an upgrade procedure based on this, which would probably
require considerable manual checking, would probably wipe out the
profit. As I noted before, although the current upgrade policy may
not be fair to recent purchasers, it does have the benefit of being
cheap to operate, and therefore helps to keep the costs of the product
down.

When I transferred TB onto my laptop, I created a backup on the
desktop machine, and restored it on the laptop. I had to make some
changes to the connection properties on the laptop, because I connect
differently on there, but apart from that it worked perfectly, and all
my templates and filters transferred too.

Account settings are in account.cfg, filters in account.srx, QTs in
account.qtn, and other account templates in account.flx. If you open
the files in Notepad, you can usually work out what is in them. Make
sure you back up the original file on the laptop before transferring
just in case it goes horribly wrong!

The other way to do it is copy the text from your templates into a
blank document, and transfer the document to the laptop, and then
paste the text into your laptop templates. This is how I manage it for
small numbers of templates.

This fits in quite well with the following bit of research:

-
A staggering one in seven technologically challenged employees needs
help even switching their computers on and off, according to research
commissioned by City & Guilds.

The UK vocational awarding body's study of 405 random UK financial
directors revealed that, despite the fact that PCs have been around
for over thirty years, getting to grips with the devices is totally
beyond many British office workers. A fifth were found to struggle to
save a document, more than one in five need assistance printing, while
a quarter cannot understand a spreadsheet.
