Hi :) From the main website http://www.libreoffice.org/get-involved/documenters/ just join their mailing list and give a brief sentence or couple of paragraphs like you did just there. Let them know you need a login for ODFAuthors although they usually figure that out just when you say you want to get involved. they do have some wiki-pages to try to help you work out what you are doing but it's easier to start by saying hi to their mailing list and take it from there. They keep trying to smooth those wiki-pages but it's still not always clear because they focus more on the work itself. Hi Sandor, I am just a user of LibreOffice but seeing that you are a Senior Software Developer I have to react to this post. For someone who is involved in software development it is shocking for me to see how little useful information you provide for anyone to do anything with. Things like: - what OS - what language pack of the OS - what error messages did you see - was any prior version of LibreOffice installed might be useful to a support person and/or a developer. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice installation issue.
Hi :) Oh, i assumed it was just another troll or else just someone a bit rushed and unable to do a simple google-search or quick visit of the LibreOffice or The Document Foundation websites. It's unusually hot in the UK right now so people are unusually irritable here at the moment. On the downloads page it does give the 4.1.0 by default which i tend to think is a bit of a mistake. I think it should be the latest stable version at least until the newer branch reaches x.x.3. However, they do clearly state (just above the downloads 'buttons') that This version of LibreOffice is prepared with care and presented with pride by the LibreOffice community. PLEASE NOTE that, since this is the very first version in the series, make sure to read the release notes (under Handy resources). The bit after the PLEASE NOTE is worth taking notice of. Perhaps making it a bit clearer by saying in the NEW series might have helped but however careful one is about things like that someone will find a way of not noticing it or of misunderstanding it. From what Sandor Marton wrote it's quite possible he got a corrupted version of LibreOffice from some 3rd party site rather than from the official website. Normally 3rd party sites are also careful and good as they often have their own reputation to maintain. Of course it might be possible to find some dodgy blog site but hopefully people have more sense than to go out looking for trouble. I was a bit surprised Sandor Marton didn't give a link to where he downloaded from but i've seen people forget that sort of detail before so it wasn't a huge surprise. Similarly with OS, and error messages. He did mention that he tried to install it without any language, which i hadn't thought of trying. I didn't think it was possible to install just 2 or 3 of the modules. The question has come up a few times in the mailing list and i'm sure other places too and the answer is almost always No. Usually giving the reason why not. Again it might be possible to find some dodgy site or place that have people giving hopelessly wrong answers such as Staples, Kioskea, Yahoo Answers but a quick look at a couple of other answers on their sites usually indicates how reliable they are. Sadly Staples probably looks legit, although at the end of the day it is just a warehouse-shop so the sales staff are likely to be desperately low paid and clueless. It might be tricky for some people to find this mailing list. It's 3 clicks from any of the slides on the home-page 1. Click on whichever slides' link 2. Click on Get Help 3. Click on Nabble or Mailing Lists although some of the other options would have also reached people, notably the IRC or Ask LibreOffice Actually one of the links leads to the The Document Foundations website and that has a Contact us page which leads to the mailing list and to our Facebook fan page, the official blog, twitter, indenti.ca, an email address to reach the Board of Directors and 4 named individuals that have official @documentatfoundation.org email addresses. So, i just ignored the original post but i keep considering passing it on because it throws up a few concerns that it might be possible to prevent in the future = such as adding NEW in before series on the downloads page or doing something else to make it even clearer that there is a more stable branch/series. Hmm, maybe your Calibri font file is corrupted? I have Calibri font on my system, wrote a new file using the font, closed and opened. No, file isn't corrupted, this font work normally under Windows and in kwrite for example. This bug isn't related to LO official build, it is only for Archlinux and only for LO ver.4.0.4 (downgrade to 4.0.3 solves the problem). If I create a new document and write using this font I will have effects which are described in this topic. Hmm, maybe your Calibri font file is corrupted? [libreoffice-users] Re: [libreoffice-documentation] question
Hi :) In Calc you can find a Σ sign below the menus, just beside the long white field where the formula is shown, immediately above the cells of the spreadsheet. Sometimes the area it selects by default is not quite perfect so you can just drag-select the area you prefer. You might find this guide helpful https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications#LibreOffice_Calc_Guide The 4.0 branch is only half complete but the guide for the 3.4 branch is plenty good enough. At this level you probably wont notice many changes anyway. The changes in Calc tend to be quite advanced stuff, even such as smoothing of types of curves in charts. Errr, you had written to the wrong list. The documentation team 'just' focus on writing the guides. It's a small team with a ton of work that they get through amazingly fast. It's the Users List that answers people's questions. So, i have forwarded your question there and let the Docs Team know they don't have to worry about spending time on this. On the other hand if you could help proof-read some of the newer versions of the chapters, as they come out, that would be enormously helpful. One of the criticisms of Guides and Manuals generally is that they are written by people that are NOT new and so a lot of technical words or strange phrases creep in. Unfortunately, everyone who does join in with the work in the Docs Team quickly becomes fairly expert so we constantly need new people to join in. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice website security
Hi :) I think it is a legitmate concern especially if you only have one machine to look after and therefore can't afford to do any experimentation with using different antivirus programs. I was hoping that the chap would download the Windows version on a GnuLinux box and then run an antivirus scan using something other than Avira. He did kindly re-download but then scanned with Avira again. I've finally got around to sitting at an Xp machine and downloaded LibreOffice 4.04. The Xp machine here is running Microsoft Security Essentials and Avg. Neither complained about the LO downloads. In Firefox it did give me the bar at the top, saying Firefox prevented this page from automatically redirecting to another page. The download didn't start straight away so i clicked on the link, inside the page, that said If your download does not start automatically, please click here. Then i tried the page again and this time when the bar appeared in clicked on the Allow button to allow the page to automatically redirect to another page. This way around the download also started. I guess i should really download Avira and try the whole thing again to see if Avira complains on that Xp machine. If you don't trust your antivirus then why use it? You really have to take notice if it grumbles about something otherwise what is the point in having it? All antivirus programs have problems with false-positives but when the program grumbles you have to consider that it really might have found something. I typically try to run 2 antivirus programs on Windows but i would be stuck if one grumbled and the other didn't. Which one would i trust? Of course having any active program running all the time in the background is going to impact on performance and having 2 (that also might conflict with each other) is going to hurt even more. [shrugs] But then if people cared about the speed of their machine they wouldn't be using Windows in the first place. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice website security
Hi :) Sure, a Windows virus could theoretically sit on a GnuLinux platform just as it could sit on any other platform. The difference is that it can't knock-out the anti-malware defences of the GnuLinux system. Also it can't run or replicate itself or infect other files on the system. So at best all it can do is sithope. Even fairly rubbishy security with infrequent updates is likely to wipe it out faster than it can grow because it can't grow. The link doesn't mention security but one of the fundamental and top priorities of Unix was to ensure that no single user could take down the whole system or affect any other user. Unix machines typically had hundreds of workers all logged in at the same time and often running processes that might take a long time to complete. Imagine if one user was running the equivalent of a defrag or disk check when another user just quickly rebooted the system. Too much potential to trash the system or lose data or hours worth of work. So, programs had to be able to run without elevating privileges and without affecting other users on the same system. Windows aimed at tiny, cheap machines with just 1 user per machine. The aim was to get a personal computer into every home and onto every desk. if a single user took down their own system it only affected the 1 person. Since then they have bolted on a few thing on top of that, such as allowing multiple users (but not at the same time), network and internet access and some attempt at dealing with some security issues as an (optional) after-thought. Wrt the thread, the reported issue did get forwarded to the websites team and they dealt with the situation really rather quickly. Thanks to the person reporting the issue the situation was resolved several hours faster than it might have been otherwise. [libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice website security
Tom Davies : It is unlikely the LibreOffice website is infected because it runs on unix-based platforms such as GnuLinux. Linux is getting malware regularly mostly targeting Web-servers for serving other kinds of malware via IFRAMEs and similar methods. -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

These features reason I suggest the following comparison libre office impress (the last stable version) with MS powerpoint course in Microsoft WINDOWS 7 has the H / PC where you do not practice the LibreOffice the I use in Ubuntu linux 12.04.02 I use home.: * Improved color palette: In MS office powerpoint noticed that I can add custom font color. How simply words can be identified and mine color values beyond some defaults. ie I define my own values in r, g, b as the font color and background color - fill a shape and generally where I have to choose color. If he has, is good to have and the corresponding option and buttons that it font color and click th is for color filling. A feature to be able to specify a custom font color. This would require a search at the LibreOffice bugzilla in case it is already filed. I am not sure if LibreOffice uses the OS palette widget, which in this case it would be an issue to enable in that palette the ability to select a custom color. * Ability to select multiple images Admission: Once I Insert image from Impress allow me to introduce only a picture. The corresponding choice of MS office gives me can choose more than one insert images. In LibreOffice need to enter one by one while ms office I can Enter all together A feature to multi-select images when inserting an image to a document. I think this should be an easy-hack. If there is no bug report already on this, a feature request should be filed first. Again, it should be an issue of enabling the multiple-file selection for FileOpen, and adjust LibreOffice to accept multiple images into the document. Where I do feature request? * standards may be stored in the closed format: When becomes a presentation of the standards has preset the Impress when stored in. Pptx then some points such size and position of objects and presentation buttets alloionontai and not stored properly so that the text is in the wrong place and some bullets do not look good when you re open the Impress. Which does not help either document sharing and either in migration in LibreOffice. This is a request for compatibility with the presentation templates (.ppx), which in some cases they are not rendered correctly in LibreOffice. Here there should be a bug report (or more) on specific issues on .ppx files which are not used properly in LibreOffice. The bug report should specify a .ppx, and how it is used wrongly in LibreOffice. Where I do report the bug? * Ability to save as image: At the Ms office Powerpoint noticed that I can select text or an object and save it as a picture thing to do a group picture along with other images and text and save it as an image thing that helps especially do logos on site. It would have been and this feature the LibreOffice Impress. This is a feature request to be able to save a selection from a document, into an image. The selection would either be a paragraph or text along with images or other objects. I think this could be implemented through an addon. Personally i do not blame Impress. I just want the LibreOffice be worthy replacement for MS Office because I believe in the idea of free and open source and I want to contribute. If there some of them would like to tell me where to Impress. Still will like if some of the above features are developed for future versions LibreOffice.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Libreoffice multiple cores - problem
In windows the only option is select the core(s) for an application, but if the app is designed for one, only one is used. To get it is needed load the app from script (.bat) or from a Direct access. E.g. to use core 1, edit a Direct access properties: Destination: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C start /affinity 2 soffice.exe Start in: C:\Program Files (x86)\LibreOffice 4.0\program\ In this way I set up LibreOffice in 1, Firefox in 2, Thuntherbird in 3, to avoid the core 0, what is the most commonly used by the apps. Hi :) It is the best. As keeps being proved by various articles, migrations, posts made to lists and experience. People are free to disagree as long as they are happy to be wrong. Personally i wouldn't limit it to being the best just amongst free Office Suites. I would expand that out to include word-processor programs that are not part of suites and i would include non-free suites and programs. Btw the Users List occasionally gets thank you letters from happy users. Is there somewhere i could forwards them to? Perhaps to send as a digest announcement to the rest of the project? Hi :) Ahh, great to hear someone else prefers Unity to KDE! I think the KDE team are great and doing great stuff and my neighbour thinks it's fantastic. I just find myself enjoying Unity nowadays but i'm glad KDE is around. Hmm, do you have to buy a whole new computer just to get a new graphics card? My current desktop has had 4 new graphics cards over the years. But it's also had 2 changes of fans, 1 new power-supply, more ram, 3 new hard-drives, 3 'new'(ish) Cpus and 2 new mbords, err and 2 new cases (hence the change of fans). There's still 1 of the fans that has been in all combinations. Realize that I use nVidia video cards on 64-bit Fedora using the proprietary video drivers. What I saw was not remotely as bad. Admittedly, when I tried out the latest dev build, it was totally unusable (of course, the single tester was unable to reproduce on Windows 7). see https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=122214 Are you able to do a test and change your video driver say between the free and not free driver to see if there is a change (I do not use Ubuntu so I don't have a good handle on what drivers are available or how). I used to have exactly the same problem in QT, and it was very bad. I was able to avoid the problem with QT Creator by starting it using -graphicssystem raster Not that I expect this to help you. I did notice that it still has some rendering issues that appeared in the latest versions (I believe it is related to an over-lay issue when you edit a field that assumption allowed me to fix it in the software that I write, but I did not jump into the QT code base). I have seen strange redraw issues so long in OO that correcting for it is almost automatic in my brain (scroll screen up then down to clear) so I cannot even say if I still see the problem. I think I do, but it is for sure not as bad is it used to be for me. I know, that I have rambled on and on I will summarize in saying 1. I have never seen it so bad 2. I have seen screen corruption 3. You may avoid some of it based on the video driver If I had it that bad on my Fedora system, I would likely change my desktop on login to see if it helped. With Fedora, I can easily jump between Gnome and KDE (as one example). I would also try jumping between the two different drivers available to see how that helped as well. Sadly, the free driver is poor with respect to 3D stuff. Thanks for your input, and also thanks to all of you who replied. I did some more tests and I found that it seems to be a problem related to the fact that my graphics card is blacklisted for use with Unity 3D. First I installed KDE, just to see what happens. I wasn't sure what package to install, so I installed kde-full, which maybe was a bit overkill… I logged out and then in to KDE, configured the driver to use both screens, then I opened a spreadsheet. Oddly enough, it tried to open the file with an archive manager, so I had to manually tell it to open with OpenOffice. I then opened the Basic IDE window and I found no problems what so ever, except that I don't like KDE, but that's another question… I didn't try the free driver, but maybe I will later. Right now I am logged in to Unity 2D and that also works flawlessly. I don't like Unity 2D either, though. I miss some Compiz effects, among other things… Maybe I just have to live with it until I buy another computer with a non-blacklisted graphics card… Johnny Rosenberg On 05/11/2013 08:52 AM, Johnny Rosenberg wrote: I have had this problem for quite some time now (months if not years) in LibreOffice and OpenOffice. [libreoffice-users] Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Java dependencies
Hi :) It's still Base and some Wizards and some Extensions. Something like 12% of the code is written in Java but it's in those areas that people rarely use. Base can mostly be used without needing Java but only if you use an external back-end rather than the in-built one. I think the Report builder still would need it but Base experts seem to be advising people to avoid that anyway. The internal back-end is HsqlDb which runs on Java even if you use the much more up-to-date version from their website as an external back-end. There are other smaller faster ones for small amounts of data. HsqlDb seems to be the best of those even though it depends on Java. Non-java ones tend to be better for large amounts of data and include Postgresql and MySql / MariaDb. These last 3 seem to be the most frequently recommended by the Base Experts. I've forwarded this to the Users List because there are quite a few Base Experts there that might be able to correct me if i'm wrong or just generally be a bit more helpful than i've been. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Java dependencies
Your description is my understanding. I just did a quick look on the download website and I cannot find any such information. Why are these dependencies not prominently spelled out in the System Requirements or somewhere else on the download website page? If they were, then the users would know what is needed for what. You haven't mentioned the age-old need of Java for the Accessibility options. Are these no longer dependent on Java? Hi :) Thanks Tink. Errr on other platforms the option only appears if you have chosen the right option during install. Otherwise it doesn't appear at all, which is a bit weird. Usually those sorts of things would be greyed-out rather than absent. I like your idea of upgrading or re-installing the 4.0.1 already. That has got to be a good move anyway. It what you was given was true, why would they work on doing the work on the OS version that is not even out? Does not make sense. I waited a long time before I went from 10.04 LTS to 12.04LTS, just before 12.10 came out. So if the next LTS is 14.04LTS, then there will be a lot of Ubuntu users [Unity or others] that will be still using 12.xx for another year or so. Now work for 12.xx, does not make sense. It needs to work and not make you wait till 13.04 or later. -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Thank you for your reply, but this was not what I was referring to. I was referring to the Unity menu-bar integration. If you look at the New Features page https://www.libreoffice.org/download/4-0-new-features-and-fixes , about halfway down (under the title GUI), you will see a screen-shot of the Unity Integration. There has been a lot of updates lately for 12.04, even some Unity ones. I run MATE instead of Unity. Maybe 12.10 works better. I am running it on my testing laptop [but with MATE as well], but run 12.04/MATE for my default desktop system. I do see the Unity Integration box you are referring to. Good questions, and I think I know the answers. Canonical tends to freeze applications for a specific version, releasing updated versions only if needed for security. Firefox, Chromium and Thunderbird are the only exceptions due to their unusual release mechanisms. I believe that there have been large changes to the core code of Unity between 12.04 and 12.10, and further changes to 13.04. So, that could explain it: Canonical created package lo-menubar for Unity, but it works (badly) only on LibreOffice 3.5 if I remember correctly. It does not work on later versions, and indeed conflicts with them. krackedpress wrote So if the next LTS is 14.04LTS, then there will be a lot of Ubuntu users [Unity or others] that will be still using 12.xx for another year or so. Now work for 12.xx, does not make sense. It needs to work and not make you wait till 13.04 or later. Well, that's Canonical's way. You can either upgrade every six months to a new Ubuntu version, or stick with the LTS. The structure is there to cater for the home users who like to keep up-to-date (non-LTS) and the business and corporate users who prefer longer-term stability (LTS). I tend to stick with the LTS for stability, but because I use Libre Office extensively, I prefer to keep Libre Office updated especially when earlier versions have bugs. Conclusion: Given all the comments that have been given on this thread (and some more that I received off-list), I believe we can conclude that it won't work before 13.04. I'll just have to wait for 14.04 before using the Unity Integration. Fortunately, it is not a big deal. We can live with it. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice 4.0 Unity Integration in Ubuntu 12.04
Why not make sure that the version of LO work for the current Long-Term-Support version of Ubuntu Unity? I do not use Unity, since I do not like it. But There will be a lot of Unity users who will want LO to work with their 12.04LTS version till the next LTS comes out. I did not use 11.04/11.10 but waited till 12.04LTS. Is there any way to make sure that LO works with 12.04LTS, 12.10, 13.04, and then 13.10? Right now, articles state Mint Linux [MATE or Cinnamon] is more popular than Ubuntu/Unity [and the other desktop environments for it]. But if we turn off some of our Linux users, then where will it stop after that? I use Ubuntu, but I hate Unity so I do not use it. BUT, many people love Unity and those people are most likely LO users and really would be upset if the specific Unity menu system will not work with LO. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice 4.0
Cross-platform: Don't forget that they do make a Mac version, at different release schedules to Windows (Most recent version was 2011) and AFAIK, it has full compatibility with MSO 2010.
