RE: How do I adjust the Alarm volume on an iPhone 6?
Hi Keith, When you select your alarm tone it will play and while it is playing I believe you just use the volume up/down keys to adjust it to the level you like and it will then play at that volume when it goes off. I am not 100% certain this is so, but I’m pretty sure. Hi, Running an iPhone 6 with 8.1.2. Somehow the Alarm volume got set at a very, very high loudness level. I can’t seem to find a way to tone it down. VoiceOver volume is moderate and readily adjustable. Siri volume is good. Ringer volume is set in settings to 35 % and adjusting volume with buttons is turned off. How can I turn down the volume on my Alarm? Thanks. Keith -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. phone/mail settings
Sieghard It’s done, but hearing how you navigate - though lengthy in this description, might well save me some time swiping! I have to go back and see how to delete old calls and texts in batches. I just did it message by message and it was far too time consuming. I don’t understand why more than a few friends of mine leave all that stuff on their phones after listening or reading their messages. How many out there let the messages pile on even though they’ve already been dealt with? While I am here I might ask another question. I haven’t seem to find anything about getting alerts to calls through notifications. Other than from a sound or going into messages can I be alerted to missed calls or texts through notifications? Deidre Sent: Saturday, January 03, 2015 10:49 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: People icon? Hi Deidre, Turning off People in the app switcher is not difficult. You can get to the correct area in Settings by using SIRI and say “Open Mail Settings”. If you want to do it manually, double tap on Settings, then touch just above the home button and Voiceover should say something like “Do Not Disturb”, at least that is the last item on the first screen which is shown when Settings opens on my 5S. You can then swipe right I think about 9 times to get to “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” or you can swipe up with 3 fingers from the bottom of the screen towards the top to scroll to page 2 of the Settings and then Mail Contacts Calendar is the second item from the bottom. Anyhow, once you found this item, double tap on it. Once Mail, Contacts, Calendar opens, you have a “Settings, back” button at the top left of the screen. This is exactly what it sounds like, a back button which will back you out of the settings for Mail, Contacts, Calendar back to the main settings screen. If you swipe right (visually this is to the left of the back button underneath the status bar) is a heading which indicates where you are and Voiceover will read this as “Mail, Contacts, Calendar, heading”. Right underneath if you drag your finger down the screen or if you swipe right again is another heading “Accounts, heading”. This indicates that what comes next are your accounts. You may only have one setup here or maybe you don’t even have any email accounts setup yet in which case all you would have if you drag your finger down the screen more (or swipe right) are 2 buttons, one is “Add” which you would use to add an email account and the other is read as “Fetch New Data” and it is followed by whatever setting is selected which by default I think is “Push”. Push means that email is “pushed” to your phone and if you set up an email account you’ll get emails immediately although I seem to remember something about how this does not work with gmail accounts (I could be wrong here). Anyhow, I won’t go into every setting here since your objective at this point is to turn off showing contacts in the app switcher. What’s useful is to know that the entire settings area for Mail, Contacts, Calendar has 4 sections so to speak and each section has it’s heading which are: Accounts Mail Contacts Calendar You can of course swipe right a lot or do a 3-finger swipe up on the screen to switch pages and then check at the bottom of the screen above the home button where you are, but if you have mastered using the rotor, then you can also turn the rotor to “headings” and swipe down with one finger to go from heading to heading. If I do that and start at the very top after going into the mail settings, I just have to swipe down 4 times: first swipe takes you to the “Mail, contacts, calendar heading, second swipe down takes you to the Accounts heading, third to Mail and the fourth to Contacts. Once you are on the contacts heading, swipe right 3 times and you’ll find a button which Voiceover reads as “Show in app switcher. On”. If you double tap on that button another screen opens and here you find 2 separate buttons which you have to turn off if you want nothing to show in the app switcher. These are “Phone Favorites” and “Recents”. I believe both are on by default and double tapping on each will toggle it to Off. When you are done you can simply exit Settings by pressing the home button or you can double tap on the back button a couple of times to get back to the main settings screen or you can use the scrub gesture, a sort of zigzag swipe with 2 fingers which is the same as double tapping on the back button. Re: People icon?
That's a feature. Across the top of the App Switcher is a list of people with whom you communicate often, or have communicated recently. This way, your App Switcher shows not just recent apps, but recent people, making them easier to get to. So long as you don't touch the top of the screen, you need never use the feature if you don't want to. You can disable it in Settings, but I don't remember just how to do that. Re: Calendar question
As Kimberly said, two events might be your best bet. You can, however, set them to repeat on the nth Thursday of a given month. Once you are in the custom repeat screen, choose the monthly repeat option. Next, choose every, and use the pickers to select which Thursday you want. Repeat this process for the other event, but on the other Thursday, and that should do it. Unfortunately, it looks like the each option, which offers a grid of all the days in the month, is not fully accessible in iOS8.1.2. I don't think that would do what you want, since it's based on the date and not the day of the week, but I thought I'd mention it. RE: People icon?
Colin, I found it in settings under mail. I turned it all off, favorites and recents too! It's so easy to get to contacts I don't need to hear that stuff in the app switcher. I cleared out all old missed calls and phone numbers from the previous owner as well. If only I had set the phone back to the factory defaults a month ago... The Jawbone UP 24 activity tracker was a lovely present from my daughter this year, setting up the device has not been too difficult without visual help but I'm struggling with the application, I can't understand the menu structure, some of the labelled icons do not mean much to me and do not give a clue about what they do and some of the graphs or values are not readable. I can't figure out how to log a meal or use the food search feature. If anyone can help, please contact me off list as this might not be of general interest. Re: phone/mail settings
I don't spend a lot of time cleaning up my phone. I don't understand myself why people don't let the phone and other services do more for them, like those people who can't wait the 30 days to have Google remove messages in their trash folder. That's just not something I want to spend my time doing. I think people are free to use their phone any way they want, and it's best not to criticize someone just because they choose to do something a bit differently. Deidre ** *Sent:*Saturday, January 03, 2015 10:49 AM *To:* viphone@googlegroups.com *Subject:* RE: People icon? When you are done you can simply exit Settings by pressing the home button or you can double tap on the back button a couple of times to get back to the main settings screen or you can use the scrub gesture, a sort of zigzag swipe with 2 fingers which is the same as double tapping on the back

Siegard, Firstly, please excuse my typing, Siri is not working for me, and so I hagve been reduced to the keyboard, but the phone is misbehaving, not allowing me to edit, and talking over the top of my typing. Re: Requesting Suggestions On Scanning A Large Paperback Book WithThe KNFB Reader
Hi, A Thermomix is a super kitchen machine and is, in my opinion a true liverator to for blind cooks, but rather expensive. Now, a tip for scanning with the KNFB reder and the Stand Scan Pro, if you don't want to damage the spine of the gook, I would suggest scanning one page at a time, You dan hold the other side of the book virtically, so as to allow the scanning sheet to sit flat. Now, I have noticed that KNFB does not do so well if the print is upsidedown, and, using this method, every other page will he updidedown, so, do try Prizmo as well.. Good luck, Sandy. Re: Advice needed
Hi, I second Richards advice. Change your Apple ID password and if you have used the same password for different services, change those also. I would suggest that you change all of your passwords using your phone as opposed to a computer, unless your computer is a Mac. Once your passwords have been changed, assuming you have a Windows computer, I would use your anty virus / anty malware programs to scan your computer (perform full scans and not quick ones) to hopefully remove any infections. If you don't feel confident in doing this last part yourself I highhly suggest that you use a local computer repair shop; not cleaning the computer properly may result in your account being compromised again, there by making everything that you've done so far useless. IMHO the cost of having a professional take care of the computer is worth it if you lack the experience to say for certain that it is no longer infected. Good luck, Ben. Also, the alarm sound is one of the alerts in Settings, Sounds. In the Alerts and Ringers Section, double-check the change with buttons setting. RE: phone/mail settings
Chris I'm not sure I was being critical, just commenting. I certainly would never tell anyone how to handle their mail or phone call logs! I did set mine to delete all messages I've deleted after 30 days. Maybe I wouldn't care either how long they sat on the phone if I had a bigger capacity on this old phone. I guess I also don't trust myself, and worry that I'd accidentally be wasting my time wondering what was old and what was new. Speaking of that, I see I am indeed notified if I have a message text or call and that appears in the doc following the messages icon. That's succinct! Can't Open Purchased Audio Book
Hi all, I have three seasons of an audio drama, which I purchased as three audio books (remember my troubles viewing them last week?) I've listened to the first two with no problem, but the third is giving me trouble. I can open it, and I see parts 1 and 2 of the season. Double tapping on either part, however, results in absolutely nothing. It won't play, there's no error, I just stay in the screen where both parts are displayed below a search field. My first thought was to delete and re-download the book, but I know that when I view it in the iTunes Store, the price is shown, whereas purchased apps in the App Store show Open or Get, not the price. I don't want to be double charged. Any ideas? If I delete it, can I re-download it somehow? Re: Can't Open Purchased Audio Book
I just got off the phone with them, and they did indeed fix it. Apparently, audio books are a one-time purchase, so you can't re-download them in the future. Given that they are $20 a piece, that's strikes me as utterly ridiculous. I'll not be purchasing audio books from iTunes unless and until this system changes. RE: turning off sounds but not VO
Annie One way you can do it is to go to the Accessibility settings under General settings and hit on the rotor. You can add sounds so that when you are in any app you can turn the rotor to sounds and then swipe to turn them on or off. You'll want to then turn the rotor to something else like words or characters so that you are not continually accidentally turning them on and off, if that makes sense to you at this point! Re: A question hello everyone: can someone tell me the name of the app that allows your iPhone to identify a song? Thank you
Apple acquired shazam so it is now part of iOS 8, so you can simply ask Siri what song is playing and so long as the microphone on the iPhone is picking up the music, Siri will attempt an identification for you. accessing photos and voice memos in iTunes12 on pc
Hello all, I am trying to access photos and voice memos that were sunk from my iPhone in iTunes12 on the pc. How do I access these? For voice memos, I checked in the voice memos playlist; however, there are no voice memos there. I know that there are voice memos since erasing them and resyncing with iTunes makes them reappear. For photos, I went to the iPhone button while having my iPhone connected and went to photos but they did not show up. I also know that these are there since resyncing in iTunes makes them come back again. For reference, I am using JAWS15. My iOS 8.1.2 Upgrade Experience and Post Upgrade Questions
I was fortunate with about only 33 days left on my iPhone 5 Apple Care that my headphone jack went out on the right side of my warranty. So I got a brand new iPhone 5 today from the Apple Store. But it came with iOS 8.1.2 which I'm not sure I was quite ready for but I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. this is the second new iPhone 5 I've gotten under Apple Care and both times the failure was with the headphone jack. Like many others on this list, I constantly use earphones with my iPhone and I prefer the wired earpods because I love the remote button for listening to books. Apparently, the electronics in the earphone jack that interact with the earpod controls failed because the remote and volume buttons stopped working. I successfully restored my encrypted iTunes backup but was disappointed to learn that data such as books downloaded in BARD Mobile, voices purchased in voice Dream Reader, and other things I've no doubt yet to identify do not restore with an encrypted iTunes backup. Can someone comment on why this is? Are these apps not set up so that their data is backed up with an iTunes backup or is this some sort of Apple restriction? I know I've seen posts about notifications in iOS 8 but since I've been running iOS 7.1.2, I've not followed them. When I tap the clear notifications button on my notification screen, nothing happens. Is this still a bug? Is there a workaround for clearing notifications? I can tell a definite difference in the sound of VoiceOver in iOS 8 versus 7. It sounds more as if it's coming from a well and does not seem as sharp at least to my ears. Have others experienced this or is this due to running on an iPhone 5 with less processing power? I also noticed that the word gigabyte is pronounced yigabyte which seems odd since I would expect audio quality to improve with iOS upgrades. I'd love any help with my questions and also appreciate any comments regarding similar iOS 8 upgrade experiences. I realize I'm late to the upgrade party and please excuse my tardiness. None are very good because of poor lighting. The dedicated devices are better because they have their own light source, and you hold the device right up to the item that you are working with. Re: My iOS 8.1.2 Upgrade Experience and Post Upgrade Questions
Just a couple of thoughts. First, you talk about the remote buttons on your wired ear pods and using them when reading books. You can get the same functionality with bluetooth headsets. I wasn't sure from your email if you were thinking that only the remote buttons on a wired headset would work with reading books. I double tap the clear notifications button and then double tap it a second time to confirm and my notifications are cleared. I've also heard people say a triple tap of the clear notifications button will also work. It sounds like maybe the high quality voice hasn't downloaded yet. You might want to check into this and even force this download if it hasn't happened yet. RE: Good color identifying apps
Hi, You probably will continue to download less than satisfactory apps. I downloaded about 6 of them and never could rely on any of them. There is nothing like a stand alone device. A stand alone device sits directly on the material to check with a seal all around so that colours are not distorted. I don’t know how a cell phone app could do that unless you could put the camera directly on the material to be checked. With the smart phone, too much depends on the ambient lighting. Up until now, very disappointing. Re: Can an iTunes gift card be used to purchase iBooks?
Once you redeam your card, the money goes into the balance associated with your apple ID. I got a gift card of $50 this Christmas and used it to purchase two somewhat expensive iBOOKS using the iBOOKS app. It worked flawlessly. happy reading and happy new year. RE: My iOS 8.1.2 Upgrade Experience and Post Upgrade Questions
Christopher, Thanks for your comments. I have posted looking for bluetooth headsets with the remote button capabilities and got some good suggestions but decided to stick with the wired earpods because they sound so very good and others have said that bluetooth sound quality can't match wired quality. I'll just use extra care this time around to try and minimize the number of times I plug and unplug my earpods. I have tried double tapping and triple tapping the clear notifications button but nothing happens. I'll keep playing with this as more notifications arrive. I do have the high quality voices downloaded for US, British, and Australian English and can tell that the pitch is simply different than it was on my phone under iOS 7.1.2. It's not a big deal and I'm sure I'll adjust but the mispronunciation of gigabyte as yigabyte is curious. I also noticed that VoiceOver doesn't say the TV portion of the DirecTV app but instead just seems to emit a sort of click cough such that only the word Direct is pronounced. Like I said, these aren't big issues and I'm sure I'll quickly adapt but I am curious if others who are using iOS 8.1.2 on newer hardware such as the 5S and 6 phones have noticed any difference in the VoiceOver speech from iOS 7.x. Comments on Latest Fleksy Upgrade on 1/2/15?
After getting my replacement iPhone 5 today with iOS 8.1.2, I was perusing the updates on the Apps Store and saw that Fleksy had an update on 1/2/15. With the problems Fleksy has seemed to have had under iOS 8 and with VoiceOver, has anyone tried this latest update and what are your comments about how it works?
