Hello,

This is a known bug and we are hoping it will be fixed in the next iOS
update. If you enter the birthday in the person's contact entry, iPhone will
automatically place it in the calendar. To add a birthday in a contact, go
to the edit screen. Near the bottom / end of the screen, activate the add
field button and select birthday from the list. Now, you will be able to set
the date using the picker at the bottom of the screen - lists for year,
month, and day. The fields are initially populated with the current date.

I just checked, and I see the birthdays' I've entered in my contacts
show up in my calendar. You have to have the birthday calendar selected

Hi all,
Please help!
I have just synced my iPhone and my iPad with iCloud, in preparation for
putting mountain lion on my Mac and using iCloud on that too.
However, I now have two calendar events for future events, but
interestingly, not the past ones. I also have got back many contacts which I
deleted in June when I got my iPhone for S. Not sure how this has happened.
But it means I need to go through and delete and edit all my contacts again!
How can I avoid this happening? Do I just set iCloud to back up my phone and
my iPad? And not check any of the other boxes in the iCloud settings, I. E.
contacts, calendar, notes, ETC?
I have things on my iPad which I want to go onto my iPhone too, and vice
versa, isn't iCloud supposed to insure this happens? It isn't. I am so
confused! I'm scared I'm about to lose everything if I do something wrong!
If I uncheck those boxes, will I lose everything?

Because iTunes is being a pain, and I used to backup with that, which is no
longer working for some reason, hence my use of iCloud now, I don't think I
will have anything to backup from… Help!

Thank you! Any advice much appreciated!
Kirsten

I've purchased and downloaded. I have no idea why this happened or how
to fix it. Can somebody help?

Thanks,

Okay, that makes sense. The question comes to mind, is the information
still displayed in your email if the message goes to someone that
doesn't use Fleksy? Also, if there is no number or email in your
message and you send it to a Fleksy user, is the app smart enough to
figure things out when that user clicks on the Fleksy link? Sounds
like I will take that info out of my settings since I don't know a lot
of blind people outside of work that have iOS devices. Plus I'm a
little uncomfortable having that information displayed to anyone that
gets emails that are sent from my phone.

Wayne

so far: what are the advantages and benefits of putting my mobile

paranoid person, but I am a little wary about putting my information
here. What's the purpose of this? Will others be able to see my
contact information if they get a message from me or if I send it
using Fleksy?

It does take some getting used to to not leave my finger on a letter
and wait for the letter. I tried it earlier and put my fingers near
where I thought the letters were and didn't wait for each one to be
spoken, and I can see how one can quickly get faster in typing with
this app.

Hello Listers,

I am sure everybody will find it sooner or later, but the first Fleksy
update is available for download. Listed improvements and new features
are:

Loading time reduced by 50%

Improved Word Recognition Engine

Manual capitalization is now possible

Improved stability

Export and import custom dictionary, you can also edit before importing
to

add or remove words

New way to enter symbols, press and hold the keyboard then move your
finger

to the top of the keyboard for different groups of symbols. Swipe down in
each group to get more symbols in the group

Same gesture inputs new line if you move your finger to the bottom right
of

the screen or bring up the number keyboard at bottom left of the screen.

Improve swipe recognition engine

I can definitely confirm the loading time improvement although it is much
better than 50% faster. The initial Fleksy release on my 4S took about 28
or

30 seconds to load, just now it took about 10 or 12 seconds.

One thing I noticed is that when I double tapped the app, almost
immediately

I get a message saying that I just had to approx. type where I thought the
letters were, sort of a mini explanation of how it works, then there was a
Cool, I got it and a More button. The Cool, I got it then loaded the
app with the familiar initial interface and the More took me into Safari
and loaded the full user guide, keep in mind that reader is available for
this so it's easy to read it without extra stuff getting in the way. That
message came up again when I exited and went back to Fleksy, but now it
doesn't seem to do so any more. I hope this will stay like this because I
don't certainly need to tap Cool, I got it each time I want to get in
the

app., but now

Happy tapping,

Sieghard

Fortunately, I have a backup copy of the folder that contains all the

the files and folders visible again? iTunes is still recognizing all the
files that have been added as being there. So, they did not get deleted

Hi all,

I'm new to the iTouch. I have the 4th gen. I have a couple questions.

1. Is the iTouch slower than the iPhone4s? As in should I notice it? I
often feel it is sluggish or slow to respond. My voiceover flicks sometimes
don't register, then they jumble all up.

2. The battery life, when it is good, it is great! Though I notice, it
seems to jump around. I've never seen this before on an iDevice. I can be
on 44%, then next thing I know, I'm on 20%. Another example, I just had it
plugged into my Mac at 12%, and it charged up to 24%. This felt normal to
me, but when I looked a few minutes later, it had jumped to 50%. That seems
odd, is it?

Thanks all, just want to figure out if this is normal, or is my Touch a dud?
Lol!

lately has not been any real issue with accuracy, but
quite a frequent issue with getting it to come back with

extension of the issue of no response and they are quite
related or not. Yeah, yeah they have been using the beta

same or worse than it was months ago. Not much of a
quality job on that in my opinion.

I've done all the turning it off, rebooting the phone,

Siri, is a beta, and in my experience a very poor beta.
When it works, it is brilliant, but it doesn't work most
of the time for me.
This has nothing to do with Fleksy. I had these
problems way before Fleksy was even talked about, let
alone released.

Basically, I have my iPhone and Pod using the same log-in password and

The result is that I cannot download apps to my phone but, when trying the

In that case, leave well alone. In some cases though it is necessary to
change the DNS settings of your connection to access services that are
otherwise blocked by your router's DNS. A DNS is simply a server that
translates those strange numbers into proper, human readable names. DNS
stands for Domain Name Server.

the app store today and clicked on productivity. And guess which app was
right at the top of the list? That's right, Fleksy! Personally I think this
is great news. It means apple has really taken notice of this app. That's
really the first step to getting an app like this integrated with ios, or at
least standard apps within ios. Even if apple doesn't take steps to work
with Fleksy, it's still encouraging to see that Fleksy hasn't slipped under
the radar by any means. Hope you are all having a lovely day. Rose

Subject: I finally bought Fleksy, here's what I think

Hey all. Well, I finally took the plunge today and bought Fleksy. I'm not as
successful with it like most of you, and here's why.
1. I can't get Fleksy to stay in landscape without it screwing up my other
stuff on the phone. When I tried answering the phone, it wasn't letting me
for some reason.
2. When I'm in portrait, because I'm so used to looking at what's on my
screen with the limited amount of sight that I have, the screen goes blank
if I don't have it flat. I'm so used to listening for the keys that I don't
trust myself without the verbal prompt.
I also found some bugs and got a couple of questions to ask. The bugs are
that ever since I installed Fleksy, when doing normal tasks like going to
the app store or trying to phone someone, Voiceover has almost a 3-5 second
lag. I don't know if it's because I just have an Iphone 4 or if I'm running
out of space because I only have 8 gigs on the thing, but it is noticeable.
Second, when Voiceover says, after typing, Swipe to the right for
additional options, I swipe to the right and nothing happens. It's just
stuck on the menu where it gives you the options to send what you've typed
in an email or a message and so on.

And now for the questions.
1. How do you get to the suggestions list for a word you've misspelled?
2. In the Fleksy settings, you can add favorites. For me, it says that the
favorites setting is in a text field. Does that mean that I'll have to
memorize each number that I want to put down for them to become favorites?
If so, that might be a challenge.
I hope that I can get used to this app in the days to come. I'm not gonna
give up on this app so easily because I know this list will help me out a
lot. Thanks in advance.

Shawn

Subject: Fleksy update in the pipeline

Dear listers
Fleksy have just informed me that there is an update awaiting approval by
Apple which should be in the store shortly and will have improvements to
both the interface and the engine. Included in these will be a fix to the
capitalisation issue.
BTW they also flagged that improved typing accuracy can be achieved if you
appreciate that the Fleksy keyboard is actually a lot higher than the
standard on-screen keyboard – this is helpful to know as when I was assuming
it was the same height I sometimes got the wrong row for a letter and hence
a higher rate of misrecognised words. Having a taller keyboard gives you
more space, and it makes sense to do this seeing as they aren’t tied to the
very modest height of the keys on the standard keyboard.

Thanks, Robin.

Hi Carol,
I have gotten inconsistent results but had to do the following in
order to make the app force-switch:

1. Turn on Force Landscape mode in settings/fleksy.

2. Go into the Task Switcher and turn off orientation lock.

3. Switch back to fleksy and rotate the phone. The developers say that
at this point you may again lock the phone but the switch to landscape
and back will still work within the app itself.

My results were that this did work until some hours later, when I
noticed that orientation did not change from portrait to landscape
mode. What I don't remember is if I had removed the app from the
Switcher in the meantime.

far, this issue, along with what seems to me to be a different keyboard
height, along with sluggish performance on my iPhone 4, make me inclined to

I get much better performance and accuracy when using an attached BT

All,

Have you noticed how if you send an e-mail from Fleksy or a SMS text
message, if you've not inserted your phone number or e-mail into settings,
it shamelessly advertises itself, or certainly, from the postings I've seen
on list, appears to…

I'm just wanting to check if I'm right before I make a fuss of this, but, if
it is the case, I'm not especially impressed with this policy, its not a
free product, its charged and a relatively high charge at that. Not to say
its not worth it, I happen to think its amazing and to coin Apple,
revolutionary, but, this sort of marketing tactic is usually reserved for
free or lite apps, not charged full ones.

I also do not like the way it inserts my e-mail address or phone number if I
have added these to settings.

Hello Listers,

I sent a message to supp...@fleksy.com a few hours ago asking as to
whether
the custom dictionary can be edited. I had noticed an export function
which

shows up at the very end of the options after you write some text and turn
VO back on. If you choose to export the dictionary it will be emailed to
you, but at this point there is no import function. I also asked whether
manual capitalization will be added in the next update and whether there
was

a time frame for when that updated was expected to come out. Below is the
very prompt reply I just received:

Thank you for your email, Sieghard.

You may have noticed the current Fleksy version has an export function,
but

no import function. This is something we will fix in the next update.

This will also provide a work around to editing a dictionary. You could
export the dictionary, edit it, and then re import it with the edits.

We expect this, along with the capitalization functionality, in the next
update.

We have already submitted the update to Apple for approval, a standard
process for every app in the app store that gets updated. Typically the
process takes a week or two, though this process is controlled by Apple.
We

are optimistic we will be able to provide the update in that time though.

Thanks for your patience.

So, we can all look forward to the first Fleksy update as soon as late
next

week. Enjoy tapping out text, even if it isn't always perfect, I find it's
just more fun to type in Fleksy and when you rapidly tap out a lengthy
word

and it's right there as soon as you swipe right I find that very
satisfying..

Regards,

Sieghard

When VO is toggled off so you can type in Fleksy, Fleksy
uses the Siri voice. Siri always uses the HQ voice and
as far as I know there is no way to change it, unless
you do the following:
Change the default voice that Siri uses in settings to
one that is different from your local region. Then Seri
will use the voice that your region is set too, but
because its not using the same language as Seri, it will
be the low quality voice. I personally prefer the UK HQ
voice so have changed the Siri language to British
English, but still have my region set to Australia and
Siri uses the low quality voice for Siri.

Hope this helps,
Brett.

For long texting projects, I often use type in braille, despite its
many quirks because I tend to think more clearly in braille. But it's
missing some punctuation, like hyphens. Does anyone know if the
Italian company that created this program intends to update it any
time soon? I just haven't gotten the hang of typing with Fleksi, as
opposed to a regular keyboard. Just wondering.

Hello Chris, you are not correct. You purchase the lite version for $.99
and if you want the full version, you do an in-app purchase using that
same app. The cost is $4.99 from within the app. This way there is only
one app you actually download.

Just an FYI,
I use my thumbs like those kids who are always texting,
with Fleksy. I let the iPhone rest on my fingers and type
with a thumb on each side of the key board.
I can type almost as fast as I can on my pc, although, I
should say that I suck at typing. I can even type while I
am walking.

This app really works well, and i am getting very fast at
selecting the proper words and puncuation. Manual input
is still slow, but getting better.

Hello Everyone,

As many already know, Match.com has an excellent and completely accessible
iPhone app.

I think I've read on here that the eHarmony app is accessible although I
have personally not used it.

At present, the Plenty of Fish App, in terms of VoiceOver accessibility,
is

as dead as the Dodo.

Recently, I been exploring the Christian Mingle.com site and have
discovered
that while they do not have either an iPhone or an Android app, their
mobile

site has been optimized for both and is totally VoiceOver accessible.

You have to join the Christian Mingle.com service on the main site but
once

done, one can login to the service on a mobile device.

The URL for Christian Mingle.com is
http://www.christianmingle.com

If you go to this URL on your mobile device, the site will detect that you
are using a mobile browser and automatically switch to the proper
interface.

Please note that I have accessed the main site on my Windows PC using
ZoomText so cannot speak as to Mac OSX VoiceOver accessibility.

Oh, above I made reference to the Dodo bird. After doing so, I did a
little

research on the Dodo and found out some interesting facts.

I will paste these facts after my name.

I hope you all are doing well and that you find that special someone you
seek.

Most Sincerely,

Mark
Facts About The Dodo
Dodo Bird Facts
Recent studies are throwing light on new information that contradict the
age-old dodo bird facts, that they were overweight and slothful animals
that

caused their extinction. In fact, scientists consider this poster bird of
extinction as the perfect example of environmental adaptation!
'As dead as the dodo'. This expression originated from a bird that became
extinct sometime in after the mid seventeenth century. Although, for long
it

was believed that the species was completely wiped out in the year 1662,
more recent reports suggest that the last sightings of the bird were made
in
1681. The origin of the word dodo is not very clear. Some believe that it
is

derived from the Dutch word dodoor which means a slothful individual.
However, as per alternative interpretation of the etymology of the word,
it
probably has origins in a Portuguese word which means 'simpleton'. It is
not

clear if it were the Dutch or the Portuguese who first saw the bird.
However, the first written account of encounter with the bird finds
mention

in the 1602 journal of a Dutch captain Willem van Westsanen. It is a
wonderful example of both, nature at its best to help every organism to
evolve and make most of the present environmental conditions, as well as
human activity behind the extinction of other life forms. Let us know more
about this wonderful bird through some interesting dodo bird facts about
its

physical appearance, habitat, adaptation and extinction.

Physical Appearance
The dodo existed when the cameras didn't. So, for long human beings had to
depend upon the paintings and written descriptions of this bird provided
by
the early naturalists, explorers and the 17th century European painters.
The

paintings by European artists which became more popular than the early
drawings, depicted the bird as being 3 feet tall and quite robust.
However,

credibility of these paintings is now largely doubted due to the trend of
exaggeration in depicting animals and birds that was prevalent in
Europeans

arts during 17th century. Until 2007, only fragments of dodo skeleton were
available. However, with the discovery of a complete skeleton by some
adventurers in a cave in Mauritius in the 2007, it has now being estimated
that the bird did stand about 3 feet tall and weighed somewhere around 44
pounds. As per these statistics, the bird was definitely big, but surely
not

as overweight as was portrayed by the European painters. The bird is known
to have a 9 inch long bill with pointed hook, grayish plumage, yellow
legs,

small wings and a tuft of small feathers towards its hind quarters.

Adaptation
The forests of Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean formed the dodo
bird

habitat. This island was isolated from the rest of the world till human
beings reached it in early 16th century. The geographical and
environmental

conditions of the island provided for extreme evolution of the bird, that
manifested in the form of gigantism and flightlessness. It is these two
attributes of the extinct bird that gave it so much popularity in the
world
of evolutionary biology, because extreme evolution is the best
illustration

of how the forces of nature work. The bird thrived in the island in the
absence of predators. They did not need to fly away to escape other
animals

and they also made their nest on ground. Its diet consisted of seeds and
fruits

Hi Raul, unfortunately Exchange accounts come with a few bugs -
searching doesn't work, it's harder to check other folders, and you
can't put messages in specific folders properly. It's also not
possible as far as I am aware, to trash messages rather than archiving

If the phone is close to your ear, I think you can press the
power/lock button once or twice quickly to hang up. You can also put a
finger in the bottom left corner and find the End button, then double
tap it to hang up. This is usually how I end most calls, by double
tapping the End button, since the 2 finger double tap doesn't always

Is this app available in the UK?

Hi,
After seeing Kellie Hickman's tip regarding Songza, I downloaded it from the
app store and took it for a spin. So far it seems like a nice little app
but I still have a lot to check out, for example, how to find specific
genres or search for a particular artist or group.

I do like not having to hear audio ads; that's a big plus.

One little quirk that I've noticed is that when I flick through the lists of
tabs at the bottom of the screen, I'll hear something like:

Concierge, concierge whatever, Playlists, playlists whatever

and so on. What's up with that?

For anyone wanting to check it out, know that Songza, like many apps that
I've encountered recently, wants to integrate with Facebook and it would
appear that you can sign in using your Facebook account if you want to. I
opted not to do that just in case I decide to ditch Facebook at some point.

All in all, not a bad little app and you can't beat the price.

Tom

Hello List,

I hope this email will not block me from this list. This will be the last
time I will post any free apps. I have given the name and the company that
produced this app correctly. If you are just darn lazy to look it up in
the

app store, then there is nothing else to say. I thought I was doing a good
deed by giving those that are interested a heads up on the apps that have
been discussed here and that others may want to download that are free or
are little cost. The app that has been most helpful for me to review apps
on

a daily basis is Store News, so just put this in the search field on the
app store on the phone and it will be listed for one to add to their apps
to

review the free or low cost app on their own. I value this list and have
grown substantially, but I will respond to those who I can offer my
assistance personally to their emails because there is a tremendous amount
of traffic on this list to be caught up with this nonsense.

Thanks for listening and I hope one will take my advice and add the Store
News app to their phone and take the time to review it on their own.

Re: Jailbreaking

This jailbreak sounds pretty cool. What iOS devices and versions of iOS
does it work with?

Hi, I used Absinthe on my mac to jailbreak my phone a few weeks ago. It was
very accessible and super easy. I don't have a PC, so I am not sure how
accessible the Windows version is. Now I'm wondering why it took me so long to
jailbreak. Probably because I was scared of bricking my phone.

Most of the apps that have been suggested I already use, but here are a few
additional ones.

BiteSMS -- A messaging app that is packed with features the native messages app
lacks. I think it costs $8.99, but you get a 15-day trial.

WifiSMS -- A tweak you can use when your phone and computer are connected to
Wifi. Simply enter your phone's IP address into a web browser, and you can send
SMS to all your contacts, and read you messages, too. Note that it will only
send text messages, even if you have iMessage enabled.

My3G Lets you fool your phone into thinking it's on Wifi, so you can use
facetime and other apps on 3g. I guess when IOS 6 is released, this app will be
obselete.

5Column Springboard Lets you add a fifth column to your screen, so you can fit
16 apps on each page instead of 12. Thanks to whoever suggested the infinite
folder app, I think it was called. I didn't know about that one. :)

Lastly, infinite tweet lets you use twitlonger with the native twitter app.

If anyone knows of a good app that'll back up all your cydia data, could you
please pass it along? i think going through and reinstalling everything when i
upgrade will be a huge inconvenience.

Re: Question about iPhone startup

Hey here is a tip for you. If you place the phone close to your ear you
can hear some funny noises. This indicates the phone is booting up. If
you are a hearing aid user make sure it's set to the t or the equivalent
position for hearing loops.

You could plug it into the charger and reboot it, but even that doesn't give
you an exact indication of how long you've held the button down for.
A feature like that would have to be built into the next version of the

Oh and in case you're wondering, if I had to choose one or the other I
would obviously go with the iPhone since it is a modern, still

Try doing a reset all settings first. Then if that does not solve the

Re: new to the group and some questions

2012-06-03 Thread chris hallsworth

Hi Rebecca.
I got my iPhone 4, that's the 4, from a phone shop. They set it all up
for me because I got it as part of a contract upgrade. When I got it
home I simply connected it to the computer and set it all up via iTunes.
I didn't know if it came with iOS 5, so didn't chance triple clicking
the home button to see if VoiceOver would come up. I have an iPhone 4 8
GB and I recommend this storage for your needs. I use wifi at home as
well but also use 3G when wifi is not turned on or I'm out and about.
The iPhone will switch accordingly. I just use the iPhone 4 as it is.
Hope any or all of this helps.

store? I can go to verizon and get it but wonder if they will be more
helpful at apple and can they help with things like porting your number
over from the old phone to the new? Did you order yours online or go to
the store? if you ordered it directly from your cell provider can you
set it up independently or did you have to go to the store to get help?
2. Do you use a bluetooth keyboard with yours or just the i phone?
3. What podcasts are out there for the iphone 4s? Is there a good
resource for learning the gestures and using the flat screen?
4. How many gigs would you recommend? I don't plan to watch a lot of
movies, download videos and mainly want to use my phone for calls,
facebooking, and twitters? Maybe here or there a video but I don't plan
to go overboard. I have wifi here at home and plan to use that. When I'm
away is it easy to use your data plan if there aren't any wifi
connections available especially if im on a bus or something?
Thanks for answering all of my questions. I'm sure I will have more as I
go along.

Hi all. This is an app which is free right now. I found it from the News
Store app. In any case, what's really interesting is that when you
record, the recording is done as a .mov file. This means that the
recording is saved in the camera roll. Furthermore, this means that if
you want to do audio-only recordings for uploading to Youtube, you can
do it with this app since it's technically a video, but with audio only.
I don't know what it shows on the screen, maybe a blank page, or a logo
of some kind, but it's not a bad concept I think. I did a short
recording and confirmed that it went to the camera roll, and I was even
able to email it to myself. The app has no settings to mess with, and
the recordings are clear. Only one button to start and one to stop.
That's about as simple as it gets. The information is below.

The app is called Quick Record and it's by Lin Fei.

The link is:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/quick-record/id469617143?mt=8ls=1

Take care all.

First of all, let me say thank you to the team for developing this
amazing program! As one who has used Braille for fifty years, I must say
that I am impressed! Though I can type well on the iPhone’s touch
screen, I find this system faster and more precise.
As others have stated, I do wish one could input grade 2 Braille into
the program. In addition, I wish the punctuation marks were more
standardized with the Braille system used in the U.S. And, alas, it
would be nice to enter with two hands simultaneously, though I find that
one can grasp this system of entry rather quickly if one works at it a
while.
All in all, I am extremely impressed with Type In Braille, and I look
forward to future updates. if I can assist further in any way, please
feel free to contact me.

I agree with Carol and Chris.
Support for other braille systems would be great, and it would be
nice to be able to use contractions.
I've also been a braillist for many years, and I love the app, but
because I'm not used to the way the punctuation is formed, it puts
me off a little.
Thank you for the great work you are doing.

I find it a good and useful app though don't get around to using
it too often. I do find the punctuation doesn't come naturally
and that's one main reason why I don't use it more.
Having been a Braillist for getting on for 60 years, it's also
hard to think in a different concept for writing and I'd
therefore still prefer to write with two hands in a normal way.
All this said, remember I do like the app very much and commend
you on your efforts to date.

This is a very nice app, however it would be nice if multiple Braille
codes were supported, such as American and UK English, maybe UEB as
well. Support for grade 2 would help significantly as it means less
typing of course. Otherwise I love the app and use it indispensably.

One question for you split tappers, any tips for when to switch the
duties of fingers? Do you have certain letter combos, certain words,
etc where you just know you're tapper will become the hunter? Just
having sent a couple texts with the split tap method, that's the only
thing that seemed odd.

I've learned much from this typing discussion. Initially, I loved the
touch typing method, but it seems to me that iOS has gotten less
responsive, even across hardware, than I remember it being when I got
my first iOS device most of two years ago. It may just be my
expectations, but I remember touch typing faster, and more accurately,
when I got that device than I can now. Prompted by this thread, I'm
trying out the split tap method and am quite intrigued.

I usually type with my thumbs, but sometimes with my right index
finger. I became accustomed to typing with my thumbs while using a
querty keyboard on an android. I have used a home row on a computer
since age nine, so learning to locate keys with my thumbs was not too
hard. I am not very fast, but it works. I have a bluetooth keyboard
for longer typing needs.
