Re: Fleksy: adding your number and email address
If you send e-mail via Fleksy it will just say typed with Fleksy whereas if you send a text directly from Fleksy it adds a special URL that if double tapped opens Fleksy so you can directly reply back. - Original Message - From: Wayne Merritt wcmerr...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, July 27, 2012 8:15 PM Subject: Re: Fleksy: adding your number and email address Okay, that makes sense. The question comes to mind, is the information still displayed in your email if the message goes to someone that doesn't use Fleksy? Also, if there is no number or email in your message and you send it to a Fleksy user, is the app smart enough to figure things out when that user clicks on the Fleksy link? Sounds like I will take that info out of my settings since I don't know a lot of blind people outside of work that have iOS devices. Plus I'm a little uncomfortable having that information displayed to anyone that gets emails that are sent from my phone. One question so far: what are the advantages and benefits of putting my mobile number and email address in the Fleksy app settings? I am not a paranoid person, but I am a little wary about putting my information here. What's the purpose of this? Will others be able to see my contact information if they get a message from me or if I send it using Fleksy? It does take some getting used to to not leave my finger on a letter and wait for the letter. I tried it earlier and put my fingers near where I thought the letters were and didn't wait for each one to be spoken, and I can see how one can quickly get faster in typing with this app. Regards, Wayne Merritt -- Follow me on Twitter at: www.twitter.com/wcmerritt My websites: www.wayneism.com www.whitecaneday.org -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. My voiceover flicks sometimes don't register, then they jumble all up. 2. The battery life, when it is good, it is great! Though I notice, it seems to jump around. Re: ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR PROBLEM WITH STORES?
In that case, leave well alone. In some cases though it is necessary to change the DNS settings of your connection to access services that are otherwise blocked by your router's DNS. A DNS is simply a server that translates those strange numbers into proper, human readable names. DNS stands for Domain Name Server. - Original Message - From: Carol Pearson carol.pearso...@googlemail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, July 21, 2012 8:51 PM Subject: Re: ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR PROBLEM WITH STORES? I was looking at the featured area of the app store today and clicked on productivity. And guess which app was right at the top of the list? That's right, Fleksy! Personally I think this is great news. It means apple has really taken notice of this app. That's really the first step to getting an app like this integrated with ios, or at least standard apps within ios. Even if apple doesn't take steps to work with Fleksy, it's still encouraging to see that Fleksy hasn't slipped under the radar by any means. Hope you are all having a lovely day. Thank you for using Fleksy! I cannot duplicate the bug you mentioned on my iPhone 4 8 GB running iOS 5.1.1. I believe others has answered your questions so shall not duplicate. Once again, thank you for using Fleksy! Oh, and no, I am not part of the development team; I am just an avid fan and user of the ap. - Original Message - From: Shawn Krasniuk bigbigshawn@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, July 19, 2012 7:47 AM Subject: I finally bought Fleksy, here's what I think Hey all. Well, I finally took the plunge today and bought Fleksy. I'm not as successful with it like most of you, and here's why. 1. I can't get Fleksy to stay in landscape without it screwing up my other stuff on the phone. When I tried answering the phone, it wasn't letting me for some reason. 2. When I'm in portrait, because I'm so used to looking at what's on my screen with the limited amount of sight that I have, the screen goes blank if I don't have it flat. I'm so used to listening for the keys that I don't trust myself without the verbal prompt. I also found some bugs and got a couple of questions to ask. The bugs are that ever since I installed Fleksy, when doing normal tasks like going to the app store or trying to phone someone, Voiceover has almost a 3-5 second lag. I don't know if it's because I just have an Iphone 4 or if I'm running out of space because I only have 8 gigs on the thing, but it is noticeable. Second, when Voiceover says, after typing, Swipe to the right for additional options, I swipe to the right and nothing happens. It's just stuck on the menu where it gives you the options to send what you've typed in an email or a message and so on. And now for the questions. 1. How do you get to the suggestions list for a word you've misspelled? 2. In the Fleksy settings, you can add favorites. For me, it says that the favorites setting is in a text field. Does that mean that I'll have to memorize each number that I want to put down for them to become favorites? If so, that might be a challenge. I hope that I can get used to this app in the days to come. I'm not gonna give up on this app so easily because I know this list will help me out a lot. Thanks in advance. Included in these will be a fix to the capitalisation issue. BTW they also flagged that improved typing accuracy can be achieved if you appreciate that the Fleksy keyboard is actually a lot higher than the standard on-screen keyboard – this is helpful to know as when I was assuming it was the same height I sometimes got the wrong row for a letter and hence a higher rate of misrecognised words. Having a taller keyboard gives you more space, and it makes sense to do this seeing as they aren’t tied to the very modest height of the keys on the standard keyboard. Re: First Fleksy update not far off
Yes I find Fleksy e-mail support to be very responsive as well. I had noticed an export function which shows up at the very end of the options after you write some text and turn VO back on. If you choose to export the dictionary it will be emailed to you, but at this point there is no import function. I also asked whether manual capitalization will be added in the next update and whether there was a time frame for when that updated was expected to come out. Below is the very prompt reply I just received: Thank you for your email, Sieghard. You may have noticed the current Fleksy version has an export function, but no import function. This is something we will fix in the next update. This will also provide a work around to editing a dictionary. You could export the dictionary, edit it, and then re import it with the edits. We expect this, along with the capitalization functionality, in the next update. We have already submitted the update to Apple for approval, a standard process for every app in the app store that gets updated. Typically the process takes a week or two, though this process is controlled by Apple. We are optimistic we will be able to provide the update in that time though. Thanks for your patience. So, we can all look forward to the first Fleksy update as soon as late next week. Enjoy tapping out text, even if it isn't always perfect, I find it's just more fun to type in Fleksy and when you rapidly tap out a lengthy word and it's right there as soon as you swipe right I find that very satisfying.. At present, the Plenty of Fish App, in terms of VoiceOver accessibility, is as dead as the Dodo. Recently, I been exploring the Christian Mingle.com site and have discovered that while they do not have either an iPhone or an Android app, their mobile site has been optimized for both and is totally VoiceOver accessible. You have to join the Christian Mingle.com service on the main site but once done, one can login to the service on a mobile device. The URL for Christian Mingle.com is http://www.christianmingle.com If you go to this URL on your mobile device, the site will detect that you are using a mobile browser and automatically switch to the proper interface. Please note that I have accessed the main site on my Windows PC using ZoomText so cannot speak as to Mac OSX VoiceOver accessibility. Oh, above I made reference to the Dodo bird. After doing so, I did a little research on the Dodo and found out some interesting facts. I will paste these facts after my name. I hope you all are doing well and that you find that special someone you seek. Most Sincerely, Mark Facts About The Dodo Dodo Bird Facts Recent studies are throwing light on new information that contradict the age-old dodo bird facts, that they were overweight and slothful animals that caused their extinction. In fact, scientists consider this poster bird of extinction as the perfect example of environmental adaptation! 'As dead as the dodo'. This expression originated from a bird that became extinct sometime in after the mid seventeenth century. Although, for long it was believed that the species was completely wiped out in the year 1662, more recent reports suggest that the last sightings of the bird were made in 1681. The origin of the word dodo is not very clear. Some believe that it is derived from the Dutch word dodoor which means a slothful individual. However, as per alternative interpretation of the etymology of the word, it probably has origins in a Portuguese word which means 'simpleton'. It is not clear if it were the Dutch or the Portuguese who first saw the bird. However, the first written account of encounter with the bird finds mention in the 1602 journal of a Dutch captain Willem van Westsanen. It is a wonderful example of both, nature at its best to help every organism to evolve and make most of the present environmental conditions, as well as human activity behind the extinction of other life forms. Let us know more about this wonderful bird through some interesting dodo bird facts about its physical appearance, habitat, adaptation and extinction. Physical Appearance The dodo existed when the cameras didn't. So, for long human beings had to depend upon the paintings and written descriptions of this bird provided by the early naturalists, explorers and the 17th century European painters. The paintings by European artists which became more popular than the early drawings, depicted the bird as being 3 feet tall and quite robust. However, credibility of these paintings is now largely doubted due to the trend of exaggeration in depicting animals and birds that was prevalent in Europeans arts during 17th century. Until 2007, only fragments of dodo skeleton were available. However, with the discovery of a complete skeleton by some adventurers in a cave in Mauritius in the 2007, it has now being estimated that the bird did stand about 3 feet tall and weighed somewhere around 44 pounds. As per these statistics, the bird was definitely big, but surely not as overweight as was portrayed by the European painters. The bird is known to have a 9 inch long bill with pointed hook, grayish plumage, yellow legs, small wings and a tuft of small feathers towards its hind quarters. Adaptation The forests of Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean formed the dodo bird habitat. This island was isolated from the rest of the world till human beings reached it in early 16th century. The geographical and environmental conditions of the island provided for extreme evolution of the bird, that manifested in the form of gigantism and flightlessness. It is these two attributes of the extinct bird that gave it so much popularity in the world of evolutionary biology, because extreme evolution is the best illustration of how the forces of nature work. The bird thrived in the island in the absence of predators. They did not need to fly away to escape other animals and they also made their nest on ground. Its diet consisted of seeds and fruits

Re: Songza
Is this app available in the UK? - Original Message - From: Tom Lange lang...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, July 08, 2012 7:03 PM Subject: Songza Hi, After seeing Kellie Hickman's tip regarding Songza, I downloaded it from the app store and took it for a spin. So far it seems like a nice little app but I still have a lot to check out, for example, how to find specific genres or search for a particular artist or group. I do like not having to hear audio ads; that's a big plus. One little quirk that I've noticed is that when I flick through the lists of tabs at the bottom of the screen, I'll hear something like: Concierge, concierge whatever, Playlists, playlists whatever and so on. What's up with that? For anyone wanting to check it out, know that Songza, like many apps that I've encountered recently, wants to integrate with Facebook and it would appear that you can sign in using your Facebook account if you want to. I opted not to do that just in case I decide to ditch Facebook at some point. All in all, not a bad little app and you can't beat the price. I have given the name and the company that produced this app correctly. If you are just darn lazy to look it up in the app store, then there is nothing else to say. I thought I was doing a good deed by giving those that are interested a heads up on the apps that have been discussed here and that others may want to download that are free or are little cost. The app that has been most helpful for me to review apps on a daily basis is Store News, so just put this in the search field on the app store on the phone and it will be listed for one to add to their apps to review the free or low cost app on their own. I value this list and have grown substantially, but I will respond to those who I can offer my assistance personally to their emails because there is a tremendous amount of traffic on this list to be caught up with this nonsense. Thanks for listening and I hope one will take my advice and add the Store News app to their phone and take the time to review it on their own. I don't have a PC, so I am not sure how accessible the Windows version is. Now I'm wondering why it took me so long to jailbreak. Probably because I was scared of bricking my phone. Most of the apps that have been suggested I already use, but here are a few additional ones. BiteSMS -- A messaging app that is packed with features the native messages app lacks. I think it costs $8.99, but you get a 15-day trial. WifiSMS -- A tweak you can use when your phone and computer are connected to Wifi. Simply enter your phone's IP address into a web browser, and you can send SMS to all your contacts, and read you messages, too. Note that it will only send text messages, even if you have iMessage enabled. My3G Lets you fool your phone into thinking it's on Wifi, so you can use facetime and other apps on 3g. I guess when IOS 6 is released, this app will be obselete. 5Column Springboard Lets you add a fifth column to your screen, so you can fit 16 apps on each page instead of 12. Thanks to whoever suggested the infinite folder app, I think it was called. I didn't know about that one. :) Lastly, infinite tweet lets you use twitlonger with the native twitter app. If anyone knows of a good app that'll back up all your cydia data, could you please pass it along? i think going through and reinstalling everything when i upgrade will be a huge inconvenience. Oh and in case you're wondering, if I had to choose one or the other I would obviously go with the iPhone since it is a modern, still evolving and supported accessible platform but as long as I can still get away with using a phone like the N82 for my phone needs I will continue to do so right along side the iPhone. So, let's say that the App store shows you 5 updates and you want to update all of them in one shot, but the problem is, that one specific app you don't want updating keeps you from using the update all feature. Maybe thee is one app you don't want updated because you know the newer version doesn't have as good accessibility as the current version. With update hider, you can add the name of the app you don't want automatically updated and it's filtered out. This means you can successfully do an update all apps and all apps except the ones you put in the exception list will update. Now that I got everyone interested in this great new tweak, I'm gonna do the car salesman line and tell you the cost of this app. It's totally free, but you have to jailbreak in order to use it since it's a jailbreak tweak. Re: new to the group and some questions
Hi Rebecca. I got my iPhone 4, that's the 4, from a phone shop. They set it all up for me because I got it as part of a contract upgrade. When I got it home I simply connected it to the computer and set it all up via iTunes. I didn't know if it came with iOS 5, so didn't chance triple clicking the home button to see if VoiceOver would come up. I have an iPhone 4 8 GB and I recommend this storage for your needs. I use wifi at home as well but also use 3G when wifi is not turned on or I'm out and about. The iPhone will switch accordingly. I just use the iPhone 4 as it is. Hope any or all of this helps. Do you use a bluetooth keyboard with yours or just the i phone? 3. What podcasts are out there for the iphone 4s? Is there a good resource for learning the gestures and using the flat screen? 4. How many gigs would you recommend? I don't plan to watch a lot of movies, download videos and mainly want to use my phone for calls, facebooking, and twitters? I became accustomed to typing with my thumbs while using a querty keyboard on an android. I have used a home row on a computer since age nine, so learning to locate keys with my thumbs was not too hard. I am not very fast, but it works. I have a bluetooth keyboard for longer typing needs.
