alone, 6 to 8 observations. The birds seem to know things have changed. I
think climate is playing the bigger role and not necessarily an improved
reporting system (ebird).

That last one sounds like a Great Horned Owl young fledged bird. Years ago,
I spent a lot of time around a young GHO owlet and they make that call as a
"feed me" begging call to get more food. Adults bird occasionally do that
call as well.

Interestingly, Righter and Andrews said "very rare nonbreeding

during the 2009 CFO Convention at Mogote Campground. A few other reports

Main roads are in good shape but side roads and some county roads can be
muddy and slick.
One of the big questions for this migration season is whether the leucistic
Crane will return this year. We'll be watching

good lighting to check the tertials. This bird is very late for the San Luis

There are still lots of Atlas blocks available in the SLVway more than I,
and the few local birders can get to. This is an exciting place to explore and

Yesterday I spotted a single Whimbrel at San Luis Lake State Park (Alamosa
County). It was feeding on the west side of the lake, just north of the boat
ramp. Today, a single Black-throated Sparow was at the Monte Vista Refuge (Rio
Grande County) on the 7 South and 2 E.

The following are preliminary estimates and for the Christmas Count but wanted
to get info out on the great birds that were found. Lisa Clements was this
years count organizer and did a great job.
The count held on Saturday Dec 18 found some excellent birds even tho the fog
was thick all day
The other night while owling, I had a chance to witness courtship among a male
and female Flammulated Owls. The male did his typical whodup who call while the
female emitted a high pitched and somewhat raspy wheee. They did these calls
concurrently and I saw them each from time to time. Then I
and we could have done better with
more normal spring conditions for this date.
