## The Big Ones

The following is a summary of the main features added to darktable
4.6. Please see the user manual for more details of the individual
changes (where available).

- Editing history is now periodically auto-saved (every 10 seconds)
while editing images in the darkroom view. The auto-save interval can
be changed (via a preference) or auto-save can be disabled entirely
(by setting the interval to 0).

- A new processing module _rgb primaries_ has been added. This module
can be used
for delicate color corrections as well as creative color grading.
It allows the red, green and blue primary colors to be moved around
using "hue" and "purity" controls.

The underlying pixel operation is essentially the same as channel
mixing.

- In addition, the _sigmoid_ module now includes a new _primaries_
section,
which can be used to gracefully handle difficult lighting situations
(e.g. LEDs) and tune the overall look of the image. Modifying these
parameters can provide pleasing sunsets, improved skin tones etc.
This feature can only be used with sigmoid's per-channel mode and is
loosely based on ideas from Troy Sobotka's
[AgX](https://github.com/sobotka/AgX-S2O3)
and related work in the [Blender
community](https://blenderartists.org/t/feedback-development-filmic-baby-step-to-a-v2/1361663
).
The included "smooth" preset should provide a good starting point
for further corrections using this feature.

- When working with the liquify and retouch modules, the full uncropped
image is now always shown, with any crop indicated by displaying an
overlaid
rectangle. This allows for cropped-out parts of the image to be used
without
having to first disable the crop module and re-enable it when
finished.

- When panning or zooming in the darkroom view, a low resolution
placeholder
used to be shown until the image was fully recalculated for the
newly-visible
region. Now, if any part of the previous view is still visible, that
part will
be immediately shown in high quality, with only the remainder of the
image
being temporarily shown in low quality until the pipe has finished.

This has been achieved as part of a complete reworking of the
darkroom image
display, which has also removed some annoying jumps when
replacing the low resolution placeholde

Hello!

I'd like to take some time, while we are all waiting for the 4.2
release, to send you a little message about darktable.

This release cycle has seen lot of improvements as previous releases.
We had also some divergences with one developer and the signal sent was
certainly not good or worrisome for some of you.

Fact is that the team behind darktable is strong and working very hard
in many aspects of the project.

Some people gain more visibility because they work on GUI part that are
directly visible by end-users. But there is also some people working on
part of the code that you do not see directly but that makes darktable
internal better.

I'd like to thank Hanno Schwalm and Ralf Brown for their work on
performances, tweaking OpenCL code path and OpenMP to use every cycles
of your CPU.

I'd like to thank Hanno Schwalm also for working on new highlight
recovery algorithms.

I'd like to thank Diederik ter Rahe for looking into Gtk issues and
proposing a very impressive framework for shortcuts. And to achieve
that, lot of code refactoring has been done. Some Gtk parts are looking
like black magic to me :)

I'd like to thank Roman Lebedev for the hard work in rawspeed. Without
this project darktable won't be there. Also Miloš Komarčević working on
rawspeed and many RAW formats support.

I'd like to thank Victor Forsiuk for working on image input/output
support and fixing a huge number of spelling typos.

I'd like to thank Aldric Renaudin for the continued effort on the
lighttable filters and UI.

I'd like to thank Nicolas Auffray for taking over the UI effort and
doing magic with CSS.

I'd like to thank Bill Fergusson for maintaining the Lua framework.

I'd like to thank rawfiner for checking noise profiles and making sure
they are in good shape for integration.

I'd like to thank Simone Gotti for working on a new lens correction
method based on meta-data.

I'd like to thank all the testers and reviewers (Chris Elston, Martin
Straeten, parafin, Mark-64, and others) making sure we do not introduce
more issues than we are fixing. Also thanks for Chris for reading my
English in the RELEASE_NOTES and correcting it.

I'd like to thank parafin and Bill Fergusson for creating the release
binaries for MacOS and Windows. And Andreas Schneider as maintainer of
the OBS platform for creating the GNU/Linux binaries.

I'd like to thank Sakari Kapanen for helping with color science.

I'd like to thank Jakob Andrén for the long journey at making Sigmoid a
viable alternative to FilmicRGB.

I'd like to thank all the translators bringing to us an interface in

our native language.

I won't name them, but also remember that darktable is Open Source and
we leverage on many other Open Source projects/libraries (to handle
Jpeg, TIFF, AVIF, HEIF, PNG... tether with camera, handle SVG,
colors...). I'm even pretty sure that there is far more code in the
dependencies we are using than in darktable itself.

And finally I'd like to thank all people that I have forgotten in the
list above. I'm sorry if I missed you.

A darktable release is a huge amount of work and the darktable team is
wonderful. I'm really happy to be part of it, let's the aventure
continue.

Have all a nice end of year!

Agree with Patrick.

It is more likely the DD responds with corrupting the data because of

something wrong.

If it is a spin disk – you may want to check it for bad sectors. But

Re: [darktable-user] Darktable-exported EXIF ignored by flickr for Samsung NX

2022-07-07 Thread I. Ivanov
I had a few pictures in Flickr without EXIF, and then I realized that DT
did not include it. This is because each export style has its own EXIF
export setting. So some of my styles did have EXIF in them and others
did not (so it was my fault).

I normally check the data with Geeqie. The only remaining thing is to
confirm with another app if EXIF is there or not. If it is – then maybe
Flickr is doing something odd.

To my knowledge – if DT is exporting both – it shouldn't care if the
image originates in Pentax or Samsung.

In short: Flickr is ignoring the exif data for Samsung-NX pictures,
while it works fine for Pentax K-*.

Working example Pentax K-3 II: https://flic.kr/p/2niiAah
Non-working Samsung NX3000: https://flic.kr/p/2nvyzYU

Both pictures have been exported with exactly the same settings in the
export module. Actually, if I view the jpg in gthumb, also the NX
picture *does* have all exif -- that's why it's probably not a darktable
issue, but a flickr issue. Nevertheless, I'm happy for any replies or
suggestions.

Re: [darktable-user] Use of the geotagging module

2022-03-13 Thread I. Ivanov

Replying back to the list (instead of personal email)

I did the tagging only once in the past but I was able to tag about
9000+ images.

My notes are not that clear...

Looks like

1. I changed the time of all images to UTC (but this is the actual time
- not the zone)

2. When changing the offset - I select several images and then try to
modify the first (change the time by directly typing the desired time
stamp) - this applies offset on all images - it does not change all
images to be the exact same time.

3. What is unclear is - when I am importing the track and the images are
already in UTC - is the zone your local zone or the UTC zone - I have
the feeling that I changed the "time" to UTC but and I changed the zone
to PST (my zone) - you will have to experiment with this.

4. Once the images have the coordinates from the track I changed back
the time to the original one and they preserved the coordinates properly.

Hope it works for you. It would be nice to have a newer video but
honestly I never had time to do that.

I want to use the geotagging module in dt 3.8.1 (which I used
successfully in previous versions, though some months ago) to
associate images with a gps track, i.e. to attach geotags to them. I
have correctly loaded a track and I see the film strip, the geotagging
module is displayed.
After a lot of fiddling the button "apply geo-location" was not greyed
out any more and I could click it. Now the images are displayed on the
map and I see that I should have corrected for the time zone. But I
can't interact successfully with any part of the geotagging module
above the gpx file entry box.
"date/time" contains the date/time values of the image under the mouse
or the most recently clicked image and while the mouse is still over
the image, the "original date/time" is also displayed in a greyed-out
style.
(I wrote "most recently selected" because there seems not to be a
"selected" state of images. When I click one in the film strip it's
highlighted, but as I move the mouse elsewhere it's not any more.)
I can enter values but they don't take effect. Do I have to do
anything to have them applied? No matter what I enter, "date/time
offset" always displays zeroes. Maybe because the "original date/time"
fields are empty because my mouse is currently not over any image.

In the "camera time zone" I can select anything from the dropdown menu

In the manual it says "Press the /lock/ button to lock the calculated

Is there any sort of "main switch" to make the module functional?

Btw, the map source Openstreetmap doesn't work, it's blank. All the

[darktable-user] tone equalizer alternate wheel behavior

2022-02-20 Thread I. Ivanov

Hi,

In tone equalizer normally the wheel of the mouse controls the exposure
compensation.

Every now and then the behavior for me changes - the wheel controls the
zoom of the image. Restart of DT fixes the behavior to the default one.

Question - is there a shortcut that alternates exposure controls in tone
equalizer vs zoom of the image? I maybe activating it unknowingly. On
the other side - I would like to be able to activate zoom instead of
exposure when I want to. So if such shortcut exists I would really want
to know it.

I have very few shortcuts defined myself

I am in the same boat - I use crop and rotate together all the time.
However - I do see the reasoning for separating them and it was a bit
going back and forth before when I had to apply both perspective and crop.

One suggestion however (not sure if it is possible).

Is it doable at all - that the crop in "Rotate and Perspective" be
exposed as an alias in the crop module? So when rotate is initiated in
the crop module - it actually activates the "Rotate and Perspective" and
adjusts it there?

If that would work - maybe it would be the best of both - separate
modules but an alias that does not work on its own - just controls
something else.

Hi,

It does remember what was last used except that when I had dropped the
opacity for a single use it seems to set that as a new starting point.
So when I have restored my need for 100% opacity and finished on 100%,
my next use will stat at 30% and then I have to scroll up to 100%.

Hi Andrew,

For me it appears to stick to whatever I set it.

- If I start retouching (at any opacity - say 90) and after that I
change the opacity of the existing shape to 100 - the next retouch will
use the 90 as a starting point (because this is what I started with) but

- If I first set the opacity (say 100) then each shape I make will be at
the chosen opacity. This also appears to persist between images, between
restart of DT and also between different tools - the opacity set in
retouch will persist in other modules (for example haze removal). Vice
versa is also true - opacity set in another module will carry forward to
retouch.

I am not sure if there is some specifics to os / version etc. but just
FYI - I am on pop OS 20.04, DT 3.6.1

It is good that the suggestion from Patrick helps you. But unless there
is something apparent like version, OS etc - I don't know why would it
behave different.

Sometimes I try backing up (renaming) ~/.config/darktable in order to
start afresh (for a test) but what it would tell me is if there is
something that exists in the config files that triggers the behavior or
not. But this would be mainly to satisfy the curiosity.

B

started changing it. So even if there were other issues before - I
simply didn't stumble on them...

True, not this one. But there were plenty of others, for example when
just disabling/enabling of crop and rotate module could change crop
dimensions. IMO they all could be linked because module (or user?)
tries to apply changes to the image before it is completely loaded.

@timur - I don't recall seeing it in the past (pre 3.6).

@Martin - if I understand correctly
https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues/7307 goes away if the
user is to wait few sec.

However - for me it is not the case - I have to change something (zoom

2021-07-29 Thread I. Ivanov

I am using PopOS 20.04 (ubuntu based)

I am also using crop and rotate (but I  have seen it in the new crop
module too)

Even now (the image is fully extended) and can't capture with the
hooverning but it should crop.

For the test - I deleted the complete history and tried (this time with
the crop module).

As I said - it is not consistent. Sometimes it works and sometimes it
does not.

As soon as I changed from perspective to rule of third it worked.

Re: [darktable-user] Add to library, select only new pictures question

2021-07-25 Thread I. Ivanov

It's not entirely clear to me when I select select only new pictures
while importing pictures, how does darktable determines the new
pictures? Is it new pictures for the destination folder/collection or
does it look at complete database and see if the filename is duplicated.

I don't think it looks in the complete DB. One and the same image can be
imported more than once on different locations (has been like this for
long time). An image gets an ID (light table - image information panel)

Most likely just compares the images in the folder.

Re: [darktable-user] Storage solutions

2021-07-25 Thread I. Ivanov

Is there a way to remap the image to new path? If not, how do you
handle this kind of scenario? File is still available, but at a new
path. Main storage does get full and because it's a laptop, I can not
connect another disk easily.

After you move the images to another location - right click on the film
row or folder, select search and locate your images - the program will
do the rest.

Also - if you work out of a shared disk (even an USB connected to a
router) DT does good work with the caching. It does fetch the raw file
but after that works out from the cache quite a bit (just an idea).

All the information on file level is preserved in .xmp - if you keep the
.xmp you can restore the processing.

If you want something more - I'd keep the complete darktable folder. On
Linux it is .config/darktable likely similar on windows but under home
folder programs and features or something like this.

## The Big Ones

- Full rework of the import module. The new module allows you to see
thumbnails of your images before import and makes it easier to handle
multiple import tasks. The same dialog is now used for importing
   from disk, card or camera.

When importing "in-place", images that are already present in
darktable
are flagged and can be automatically excluded from the import.

Importing from a local drive won't use gphoto and so should work more
   reliably on Windows.

- A vector-scope is added to complement the current histogram,
   waveform and parade views.

- A new default demosaic algorithm (RCD) has been introduced, which
should provide
better quality than the current default (PPG) without the long run-
times
of AMaZE. the order of the demosaic algorithms has also been adjusted
for clarity.

- Support for "dual demosaic" has also been added, allowing you to
combine
"RCD + VNG4" and "AMaZE + VNG4" for bayer sensors, for xtrans sensors
there is
"Markesteijn 3-pass + VNG". This allows you to use an algorithm
better resolving
fine detail and another one delivering smoother output depending on
local image content.

- You can now create an opacity mask based on the sharpness of the
image. This uses
a similar algorithm to that used in dual demosaic.

- Drawn shapes are drawn on the original RAW image and then distorted
through
the pixelpipe. This previously led to, for example, circles becoming
ellipses
(due to lens distortion) after being placed on the image. All drawn
shapes can
now be pre-visualized and moved prior to placement, with full
deformation
applied. This makes the editing of masks easier fully WYSIWYG.

- A new Color Balance RGB module has been added. This can be used as a
one stop module
   for all color grading work.

- A new censorize module has been added. This allows you to hide parts
of the image by adding
   a blur/pixelization.

- A new crop module has been added. This new module has been added late
in the
pixelpipe and makes it possible to use cropped parts of the image for
source spots
in the retouch module, for example.

- A new section has been added to the color calibration module to allow
you to calibrate
colors using a color checker chart.

- The map module has been enhanced in a number of ways:
   - When importing a GPX the trace can be displayed.
   - Location can be set using polygons and directly created from
information
reported by Open Street Map. As a reminder, all locations
create tags automatically for images placed into the area.

- The basic adjustments module has been replaced with the quick access
panel, which
can be used to group controls from multiple different modules in one
place. Currently,
only non-graphical controls (sliders, comboboxes etc.) can be used.

## Other New Features And Changes

- The various lighttable modes can now be accessed via clear and
descriptive icons
at the bottom of the screen. These should be easier to use than the
existing drop-down
   selection.

- The export module is now also accessible on the left-hand panel of
the
   darkroom view.

- The mix control in the contrast equalizer module is now retained as
module parameter. This means that no data is lost when using this
slider and
you can always change the mix later with full precision.

- The following modules have been deprecated:
   - The basic adjustments module has been replaced by the new quick

[darktable-user] image selection lighttable 3.2.1

2020-08-12 Thread I. Ivanov

Hi All,

I noticed a change how image selection works in lighttable 3.2.1
compared to 3.0.2

When viewing in full screen (press and hold "w") and advance - I was
able to click enter and mark the image - then when I release "w" the
image on what I hit enter remained selected so I can easily go to it.

In 3.2 the image on what i press enter is highlighted but as soon as I
move the mouse to go to it the selection disappears.

Does anybody know if this is intentional?

Thank you,

B

You should distinguish the two "problems":

yes sorry

a) power supply disconnects (this is critical as when it happens it
drains the battery).

b) too hot - I am starting to see a pattern that this is a general ryzen
3900 issue

- the CPU gets too hot: maybe it is not a problem, it is what it is.
Notebook's thermal limits are always compromised, even on "gaming
machines". You can clean filters, fans, re-apply thermal paste, but in
the end the limits are still there.

- the BIOS and/or kernel is not throttling the CPU as it should, and
this is causing the hardware safety switches to shut down the
computer. Some safety measures are not reset until you fully cut the
power to the motherboard, so it's not strange that you need to
disconnect the power brick to turn it on again.

What are the peak temperatures of your computers when under load?

Mine (Intel 4720HQ) goes up to 97-98°C before aggressively throttling
back. You should check on AMD's site which are the warning and maximum
temperatures for your particular CPU, and compare them with the data
the system has. For example, using the command "sensors" for me shows:

Package id 0:  +55.0°C  (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

Thank you!

On completely idle machine I am getting

iwlwifi_1-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:    +40.0°C

BAT0-acpi-0
Adapter: ACPI interface
in0:  12.35 V
curr1: 0.00 A

k10temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
Tdie: +71.9°C  (high = +70.0°C)
Tctl: +71.9°C

acpitz-acpi-0
Adapter: ACPI interface
temp1:    +73.0°C  (crit = +120.0°C)

When hot - it goes over 100 C - about 104 to 107.

which is consistent with the thermal throttling in my CPU when the
temperature is around 85-95°C. As I said before, unless the throttling
safeguards are improperly configured or disabled, your CPU should
never get hot enough to shut down under normal operation. My CPU is
old and power inefficient by today's standards, and even then it's
capable of working on passive cooling alone by automatically lowering
the frequency to the minimum (accidentally tested once the fans got
stuck).

Things to check:
- is frequency scaling working at all?
- which is the frequency scaling governor?
Some info: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CPU_frequency_scaling

Thank you - will check that.

That sounds more plausible than the power brick knowing about the
temperature of the computer. You can probably check if the power
rating of the brick matches the power consumption of the computer (it
came with it?)

Yes - it came with it. To make it worse - the manufacturer replaced it
and the second machine (new machine, new power brick showed the same issue)

https://www.rapidtables.com/calc/electric/Amp_to_Watt_Calculator.html

11.8 Amps at 19.5 Volts calculates to 230.1 Watts. The power supply is
230 Watts. Unless the .1 Watts is significant or there is an error of
some kind then they are extremely close.

A recent computer with a recent kernel should never get to the point
where the CPU turns off because of high temperature, it should
throttle much earlier. If that is not the case, you may check if
automatic throttling is not disabled somewhere.

It is Ubuntu 20.04 derivative - fully updated, and the bios is also

Thank you All!

It is really odd. It is a brand new laptop and I can reproduce the issue
consistently. But it does appear to be related to heath. The computer is
on a flat surface (table) and nothing blocking vents around. Normal
ambient temperature 26 Celsius.

I am really puzzled how the power supply knows or reacts. It is just a
power brick. So - no information flowing from the laptop to the power
supply (how hot it is - the laptop). Do you think the power supply does
not match the laptop correctly so the power drawn when all CPU, GPU and

Re: [darktable-user] DT & life on the road

2020-08-04 Thread I. Ivanov

I don't want to have to do the work twice. What do you suggest to pass
the DT work done on the laptop to the desktop at home?

As long as you have the .xmp created - when you import it on the home
computer - it would be fine.

There are few scenarios that are a bit unclear

- the large USB - are you going to copy the images or use it from the
USB? Either way - you can simply import on the second computer and it
will read from the .xmp

- once you move the images on the home computer - what happens with the
laptop? - if you want to avoid confusion and both computers are
accessing the same USB - then you will have to consider synchronization
of the library (or easier - delete the library on the travel laptop).

FYI - recently I was experimenting on a laptop with removing /
recreating / replacing of "library.db" - it was as easy as stop DT then
either rename or delete library.db - DT was very robust and just worked.
The only "odd" item that happen when I was experimenting was having old
cache with new images - it simply would display the old images in light
table then when modify it in darkroom - it will update the preview. Of
course - easy to remove the cache altogether and then run
darktable-generate-cache.

What you want to avoid is using 2 different libraries (that are not
synchronized) and accessing the same images and editing them (because
the 2 instances can override one another) but reading the request I
don't think this is going to happen.

You can also utilize check for .xmp changes on startup - it works but
the drawback is for a big library (many thousands of images) it may take
a while. So you don't want to have this setting all the time.

Hope this helps,

If you "really" want to reproduce what the camera JPG produces - you can
try the following

- the camera manufacturer includes a program to manipulate the images
- this program includes .ICC profiles - for example - Canon includes
PS.ICC for (Portrait SRGB), PA.ICC (for Portrait Adobe RGB) and so on.

- take these profiles and place them in /$HOME/.config/darktable/color/in
- then use them as "input color profile" from within the input color
profile module
- most likely you will want to activate "unbreak input profile module"
and also adjust the sliders in it and brightens / contrast saturation
module.

Now the more important questions - do I recommend it, do I use it?

No. I don't use it.

In my opinion - DT has way better tools and as the others suggested you
can achieve much better results than the .jpg

In my opinion - for beginner this is a good resource

Re: [darktable-user] Windows or Linux?

2020-07-18 Thread I. Ivanov

Which platform (Windows or Linux) will give darktable work better on?

Linux!!!

I am using a 9 year old Dell XPS i7 gen 2 (sandy bridge) (8 cores total)
- 8GB RAM and PopOS 20.04 that I upgraded to few weeks ago. And I prefer
to use this machine compared to Dell Precision - Windows 10 Professional
with 16 GB Ram - 8 cores i5 or i7 (not sure) - Gen 8  - 1.5 year old
again 8 cores.

I didn't buy the Windows - I have it from work and work on it daily (I
don't use it for personal use except to try one program or another). The
windows has even GPU Nvidia Quadro P1000 that Darktable utilizes but I
see no significant improvement in performance.

With all that windows has to offer on the hardware (I mean the Dell
machine) I feel that the performance and experience did not match Linux.

Because of my older configuration - I used Ubuntu 16.04 with Darktable
2.6.3 and this configuration (on the 9 year old machine) would happily
compete with Windows 10 Professional (the new 1.5 year old computer)
with Darktable 3.0.2

Now since my 9 year old machine is upgraded to Pop OS 20.04 - Darktable
3.0.2 still works great but in some modules (like denoise, retouch) I
can feel the aging hardware. Even with this - the service that I
received from the hardware (Dell XPS x2), Linux and Darktable are more
than impressive.

I don't know what the experience is to run Darktable on a brand new
machine under Linux. Looking at youtube videos sometimes - majority of
the presenters that run Linux appear to have better experience than my
Windows 10 professional. By the way - they are not only running
Darktable - at the same time they record the video for youtube.

Hope you will find the best platform that serves your needs. I made my
choice and it is Linux.

I'm not a developer, but I would expect not to be an easy thing to

I use google photos but "never" directly from DT. I consider it over

agree dropping the exports to google / flickr etc. is better. There are

Re: Fwd: [darktable-user] copy masks

I think they don't work in a uniform way.

For example - if you create a mask in the color correction module
(simple circle) then go to light table and copy / paste the module - it
will inherit the mask in the new image.

On the other hand - if you are still in darkroom and try the same using
the film strip on the bottom - it did not work for me.

I am using ubuntu 16.04 / DT 2.6.2

You may be able to experiment with copying the side cart to a new name
(like a template) and then try to load it (I haven't tried it myself).

I did it to demonstrate the way the hierarchy of tags was stored.
But I'm wondering if you would be able in any way to copy the parts of

Clearly, this is not an ideal solution (if it works at all), but it

Dear darktable community,

I have been using DT extensively over the last two years. Now I come to
the point that I dare to ask some questions which I could not figure out
my self.

In order to process bracketing images from a tripod I would love to copy
masks from one image to another. When simply copy and pase the module
stack to the new image, the drawn masks are gone. I guess that is
intentional for most images, however, in some circumstances it would be
useful to apply them as well.

Any ideas how I could achieve that?

This feature works as expected but something changed along the time.

If you want to select using this line

'family|event1'
'family|event2'

For some reason I recall that at a point "hitting enter" was not needed.

I can see 4K Slideshow Maker claiming to be specifically for slideshow

full resolution but bigger compression (60-80% quality) and then display
them with Geeqie when on linux or share them over dlna (minidlna in my
case) and use the TV photo program. The TV (LG) allows both slideshow
and music to run at the same time. The bigger compression gives smaller
file that does not stress the TV too much. At the same time the full res

I have never heard about a slideshow specific (standard) format that
would display jpg and hold it on the screen then advance to the next jpg.

[darktable-user] core options memory settings

2019-09-03 Thread I. Ivanov

Hi All,

I am trying to optimize the core options for my system. It is an 8 year
old laptop with 8Gig RAM and 500 GB SSD.

GeForce GT 525M/PCIe/SSE2 (apparently too slow).

Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz × 8 (sandy bridge 4 cores 8 threads
if I am not mistaken).

Ubuntu 16.04 / DT 2.6.2

I read https://darktable.gitlab.io/doc/en/core_options.html

The memory settings are displayed in minimalistic approach

My (current) settings are

1. thumbnail cache 3096 (I tried with lower values but looks like it
impacts lighttable more than I would like to) - I do have the back end
disk cache enabled.
2. number of background threads 16 (I used 8 for a long time but didn't
observe ill effect for now by increasing the value)

3. host memory limit for tiling 2500
4. minimum amount of memory for single buffer tiling 48 (I kept this to
16 for a long time but it looks like increasing the limit is beneficial
- not sure if I am doing the right thing here).

What do you use (or what would you use if you were in my situation)?
Again - this is an older machine and I know that it is having a
challenge. I am simply trying to set it to the best I could. When I use
DT normally I turn off all other programs except system monitor so I can
keep an eye on the memory usage.

Thank you in advance...

Re: [darktable-user] Looking for some use cases for a metadata editor in darktable

2019-08-07 Thread I. Ivanov

have you looked in an xmp file for the date?

I may be missing something here but what I did - I imported few images
then applied time offset +9h in my case. This did change the image
information pane to show the correct time since I offset it. However -
when I exported the images with copy - creating the name based on the
EXIF - it does place correct time within the file name as I offset it
but the new image has still the original time - before the offset was
applied. I checked after that the XMP and I cannot locate entry about
time modification / offset etc. So... either I don't know what to look
for or the entry is simply not there. To me this is a metadata editing...

What I tried - I offset the time - xmp is produced. Time is correct.
Removed the images then re imported them (the xmp is present no change
to it). Time offset is gone. Looks like this is likely preserved only on
DB level.

iianm, an "undo" function currently exists.

How do you trigger it in lightroom? Is it in DT 2.6.2? I can see very
old FR https://redmine.darktable.org/issues/8498 and it is still open.
Also this one

and this one https://darktable.gitlab.io/doc/en/tagging.html are not
saying anything about undo / redo.

sorts of metadata fields would you want to edit? How many photos would

collections)? Do you have any other suggestions?

I usually use description, tags, creator, rights. Description tends to
get longer for me... I tend to name the pictures after the date.
(MMDD-MMSS). Some times I am struggling with pulling this from EXIF
- specifically when I have to offset the date +- 1h or more because of
incorrect clock. Not sure if it is possible but if I change the date I
would like it to carry forward. I understand modifying RAW is not a good
idea and agree with it. But if the info is recorded in the XMP and the
user can elect to read the XMP it would be nice.

I miss having keyboard navigation in the tag area - for example left
arrow to collapse branch, right to expand...

I regularly tag and include metadata for 500 - 900 images at a time.
Currently working on 10k so I may end up with 2000 or more keepers (that
will have to be tagged)

Currently - I don't think there is an easy way to copy / paste all
metadata or few fields from one image to another (or many others). If
the fields increase - it would be nice to have such.

I've had cases when by mistake I overwritten tags / metadata on
considerable number of images. Having undo / redo feature would be very
good actually very very very good.

Not sure if I am understanding correctly but new interface - do you mean
a completely separate are from lightable? Or still part of lightable?
There are other items that can be considered - like better visual
identification what is being tagged / edited but this can also crowd too
much lighttable...

2019-07-20 Thread I. Ivanov

smb is slow and you have quite a large collection being imported. I would
*guess* that dt has not had time to generate the previews yet.

perhaps a better plan would have been to download the images to the smb
drive or via nfs/sshfs first and then to import to dt. but that would
probably still have been much slower than a local drive.

I had considerable issues with DT files stored on USB connected to a
router (make believe server) and shared using SMB (took forever to
import and work).

Oddly enough - if I am to copy the images back and forth using Nautilus
or command line - it would work much faster.

Few months ago I changed the firmware to an open source one and gained
access to NFS shares on the router. Since then - the speed have
increased significantly. I mean specifically when DT r/w from the router.

Few days ago I copied more than 10k directly to the USB (connected to
the router and shared over NFS). I am currently working out of it
directly - on a 8 year old laptop and the speed is okay. I mean - the
bottle neck is not any more the router. If you are on synology - you
*should* be able to have NFS share. For me - the experience with DT
reading images over NFS is much better comparing to the one over SMB.
You may be able  to improve r/w performance on SMB with forcing
different mounting options like smb version but none of it was very
reliable for me.

I would be surprised if you'd get this working at all. The (IMHO) most
important aspect of h.a. photography is the shear distance between you
and the subject. That can add up to 50 kilometers or more (as you can
clearly see from your mountain pictures).
Between you and the subject there are so many moist and dust particles
that half of the light is gone, and the other half is distorted. And
you don't even get to chose which half you get.

I live in remote flat area with outlook on distant mountains. And I
see the same sort of problem. On a sunny, dry summer day "my"
mountains are grayish and dull , while after a big storm I have clear
vision, with vivid colors for at least 25 kilometers.

My best guess is that successful h.a. photographers simply wait for
the best opportunity: such as after a big rain, when the air has been
washed clean. Or during winter time, when the air is dry(er).

[darktable-user] high altitude photography correction challenge

2019-07-17 Thread I. Ivanov

Hi All,

Recently I took some pictures on a higher altitude - Untersbergbahn
GmbH. What I noticed is that they have quite a strong blue hue to them.
This however is only for the landscape pictures (mountains / valleys)
that I took. The pictures I took of people (few meters away) are just
fine. I did take gray card white balance and  the one facing the sun
measures at temperature 6498 while the other (slightly tilted to be
shaded) measures at 8984. I was unable to produce a pleasing result with
either - even with standard cloud / daylight settings in DT.

I used Canon 70D with 50mm 1.4 lens with polarizing filter. However - I
did not see much difference to the pictures taken on 18-135mm lens.

DT is 2.6.2 on ubuntu 16.04

The link

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/sf7znezb45ghnr2/AADCPgrFycbSPlxaFOfSNWiHa?dl=0

contains two .jpg, CR2 and the 2 .xmp - quite unsuccessful attempt from
my side to develop the images.

All that I searched on the web points to physical challenges with high
altitude photography but I was unable to find anything specific when it
comes to developing such or if I needed special equipment (like specific
filter) to take such pictures.

Would you be able to have a look please and let me know what I am
missing? My attempt to develop the picture fails miserably comparing to
the stunning view from the mountain. The weather was a bit hazy and I
did not have a haze filter but I can't think of anything else. The
histograms fitted nicely. Is it simply some particular way to develop
such images that I am not aware of?

I would appreciate it if you can please point me in the right direction

Thank you,

B

Yes - the challenge is that when this is done I am to press "z" to
display the image in full screen - I have to wait for it to render on
the screen.

Looks like by default - in LT - the prerendering is equivalent to

it to be done at level --max-mip 4 or 5.

[darktable-user] pre rendering

2019-05-23 Thread I. Ivanov

Hi All,

I am using DT 2.6.2 on ubuntu 16.04 - older machine.

When I develop one image often I want to carry the changes to another
10-20 images (in LT).

I can see the changes are propagated properly and the thumbnails
changed. However - when I press "z" to see the image in full screen - it
takes some time to render (because my machine is older).

Is there a way to have all changed images rendered at higher res for LT
as soon as they are changed?

Currently to achieve this I press "z" and try to flip them one by one
and this seems to trigger the rendering but some times (when I change
more images) it misses some. This bothers me not only because I have to
wait but also the blurry image - I have to look away from the screen...
even if it is for 2-3 sec.

I use disk cache for thumbnails, memory for thumbnails is 2048, and if I
force disk cache from command line it does create thumbnails at the
bigger resolution as I want but I am looking for a way to make this work
automatically while I am normally using the program.

DT does not change the RAW file. If you are observing that the RAW file

(assuming no other software was used on the RAW file).

Re: [darktable-user] Export weirdness - odd cropping DT 2.6.1 and DT 2.6.2

2019-04-16 Thread I. Ivanov
I had similar (but not exact) issue before. It happen when I deleted
images from DT and re imported after moving them to a different location
(at the time I didn't know that I can simply point the images to the new
location).

The behavior was - what Light-table presented for some images did not
match DT. I ended up touching the images (the side carts) then forced DT
to check for modifications when it starts.

For me - not only the crops were odd but also edits were lost (only in
Light-table). Since I started simply pointing the folder to the new
location the images are moved - I have not experienced the issue.

I am not sure if this is what you are seeing or something different...

the module. Apparently there are areas that I am missing.

There's also some good discussion about the idea behind the module, and its
approach to colors at the luminosity extremes here:

  https://discuss.pixls.us/t/filmic-a-personal-view/9990/61

If your goal is to retain extreme golden-hour yelowish casts, you might need to
work somewhat outside of what the author intended the module for. That doesn't
mean you can't still use it, but you'll probably have to counterract some of
what it tries to do by default. Once you develop a good default preset to
replace the basecurve with, it does offer a nice set of parametric controls for
further adjustment when you want it. Again, this is probably not exactly how
the author intended it to be used, so keep that in mind as you find your own
optimal workflow. :)

Thank you! I was not aware of this last discussion. Will certainly read
it. Yes - I am after the golden hour yellowish casts.

The filmic module doesn't try to match the base curve, at all. If you want to
do that you'll have to manually set it to some fairly extreme settings. Even
doing this, the colors will be different, partly because basecurve is before
the input color profile in the pipeline, and tends to push colors to extremes,
and partly because filmic is, in part, specifically built to avoid these
unnatural saturation extremes. Hence even with similar curves, you might need
to use additional color tools if you want to emulate what basecurve does (and
in that case, you might want to just stick with basecurve).

Anyway, attached is a quick and dirty attempt to at least get the filmic curve
into the same ballpark as the basecurve, as a place to *start* with a

Hi Guys,

@Jack - yes - baseline is disabled for filmic

@David - I did not use preset in filmic. If I turn preserve crominance -
the results become even worse (pink)

@Remco - I just tried 15EV preset and extreme luminance about 50% -
still very different. I take the point for clipped data but the effect
is overall - the complete image is affected - not only the over exposed.
Besides - this is just a sample. I am observing the same in images that

Just a quick look, but I had to reduce the exposure by about 1 EV (Exposure
module), and with the 15EV preset in "filmic" increase the 'extreme luminance
saturation' to about 50%. You will still get differences wrt the standard
basecurve.

It looks like the reds are over-exposed (clipped in the raw data), so hard to
get something realistic out of it as you are missing data.

I read https://www.darktable.org/2018/12/darktable-26/ and what I am
perceiving is that it is targeted to balance the image to avoid over
exposure and preserve details. Color can be enhanced / saturated but my
concern is the balance. The two results are just too far from one
another with absolutely minimum processing.

Can you please point me to what am I missing?

well. I usually just ignore the window that pops up to tell me about
newer xmp files, unless the ones that I'm about to work on are listed,
then I select those and let it update the database.

However, there have been some situations where my previous work has
been wiped out when opening a folder on another machine. Because of
this, I now habitually copy all my xmp files to a subfolder after
working on them in order to keep a back up, just in case. Occasionally
I need to manually load these sidecar files.

Would an option to disable darktable's database and use just the xmp
files be a feasible option? How about using something like syncthing
(Linux platform here) to keep the database synced between multiple
machines? Would doing that cause any foreseeable issues?

How are other people dealing with using multiple machines to work onprojects,
any tips?

when I use any machine beside my main workstation to edit photos, I issue
darktable as:
   darktable --library :memory:
import the photos to be edited
   finish the edits
   close dt
and back at my workstation, re-import the edited photos with their
accompanying xmp files.

have not encountered any problems with this work plan.

In theory... if you have 2 identical machines (for example linux)
shared network location for DT files
shared network location for the DB, configuration files and cache
same mounting point for the 2 machines

you could use DT on one or the other (one at a time) and the changes
should be on the 2 machines.

BUT... I haven't tested the scenario please back up if you want to try it.

On the other hand - what Patrick is pointing to is based on experience.

I do this all the time too - works well

Haven't tried this - I usually work the sub-folders one by one.

This will save the new locations on the DB, avoiding any problem

I noticed I have to restart DT to fully display the images at the new

Re: [darktable-user] shared location multiple computers

It doesn't work over network (on different computers) because DT code
checks for existence of PID:
https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/blob/master/src/common/database.c
So I guess currently there's no guard against 2 darktables running on
different PCs accessing the same database on network share.

Thank you, I don't know the code... but my understanding is that DT
"can" run if the database is on a network share and more than one DT can
connect to it simultaneously.

In my opinion at least 2 possible directions exist

1. Preserve multi client (this can be risky if both clients work on the
same images) but at the same time opens a lot of possibilities - people
collaborating together.

2. Enforce single client (this is safer) but at the same time limits the
expansion.

I think each would appeal to some.

darktable again after the upgrade. Seemed normal, but I wondered, why
I'm facing way old pictures and not the collection I was working on
before the upgrade. So I clicked on Collections -> Foders -> 2018 -> ...
wait a moment nothing changed. Still says 21617 Pictures in recent
collection (that's obviously ALL my pictures). Strange - no folder was
working. Tried Filmrolls. Tags. Kameras. Nothing. Restarted DT.
Rebooted. No change. I can't access any of my collections - always
showing all of them pictures. Only thing working is "show all", "show 1

Any suggestions what I can do?!?!

Thanks a lot in advance!

If you're on Linux, there is rsync(1). This

rsync -av --delete /src/dir /backup/dir

(actually, I still have an --exclude argument

This is very fast and reliable; if everything

Thank you,

Yes - I use rsync. Maybe I can mirror the complete structure taking only

Note, however, that the database will silently deviate from
read-only XMPs (not writeable, or read-only mounted filesystem) .

I am using crashplan for backup. It can backup as often as every 15 min.
The challenge I am facing with XMP as a primary is that when changes are

affecting at least 70 GB (rough estimate).

I am still going to investigate backing up XMP (only) much rapidly (like
15 min) but at present - having a copy of the DB seems to be better than
nothing.

The mistake was completely mine with removing the descriptions but it
would be nice if DT could improve on undo / redo approach. I find myself
relying more on the tagging of the files. It is a very powerful feature.
And it is certainly much appreciated. At the same time - the danger is
significant (and not easily repairable if backup is not present).

Thank you - looks like it is bidirectional (XMP can update DB and DB can
update XMP). For some reason I thought it is unidirectional (XMP can
update DB only).

I will certainly check various options and test them. I do keep backup
of my files but it was daily. I did accelerate this significantly since
yesterday. It is good that multiple options exist.

[darktable-user] DT speed

2018-12-07 Thread I. Ivanov

Hi Guys,

I am trying to assess and hopefully improve the speed of DT. The
particular machine that I am testing on is windows 10 with DT 2.4.4. It
has 2 GPU - built in Intel and Nvidia quadro P1000. The Nvidia GPU is
4GB RAM, the computer is 16 GB and CPU is Core i5 gen 8.

Currently I can see it is using the proper GPU (Nvidia P1000) but
utilization wise it is like small spikes to about 40%. RAM - usually I
don't go above 8GB.

If I put some high values on number of background threads - like 30 - I
can see it can have 100% of CPU usage for the sake of testing. But this
is only when thumbnails are being done. I cannot see any speed gain or
more GPU usage when exporting of pictures. This GPU is 640 CUDA cores
and I am under the impression that DT is under utilizing it.

Is there a configuration that I am missing or maybe I am
misunderstanding what to expect?

B
