Re: [slim] Thumbnails not displaying with playlists

2008-04-02 Thread iPhone

I see this post has been out for over a week with no replies. I have
searched under everything I can think and have not found an answer on
the Forum yet.

Here is my issue. I have album art for over 95% of my collection. When
the art is missing in SqueezeCenter it is also missing on the SBC which
makes perfect sense. If its not on the server, it can not be feed to the
SBC. But about a third of the time, I see the album art on
SqueezeCenter, but all I have on the SBC is the song, album name,
artist name, and the thumbnail of the beamed pair of Quavers. Yes, some
times it takes up to 10 seconds for the album art to show up, but this
only happens rarely. Usually the album art is there or it is not and if
not, it is not going to show up.

Any suggestions?

If mine is lying about, I get about 4 days before needing to cradle it.
If I am picking it up and using it often, it goes 2 sometimes 2 and a

Three questions: Did you play with it when you first received it or did
you charge it for over 8 hours before using it? Do you have a strong or
weak WIFI signal? Do you make sure you hear a beep when you place it
in the cradle?

Check your controller settings and select the shortest times and see
what happens. I hear other people talking about 20 and 30-second
wake-up times. Is this a guess or actually timed? Most of the time my
SBC is up and running in 5 to 7 seconds. Once after being gone for two
days, it took about 12 seconds to wake up. I wonder if WIFI signal
strength has anything to do with the different times people are
reporting for wake up or if it just seems that long because others are
not actually timing it.

If you do not have a DUET, you do not have to have SC 7.x. Having said
that, if you are a big user of plugins most are being rewritten for 7.x
so I would think that development/support will start to fall off for non
SC plugins.

I could only suggest downloading SC 7.x to a PC and checking it out.
Then if you don't see any major advantages, keep what you have.

 Slimserver/Squeezecenter on the ReadyNas.

Unfortunately, although customers themselves try to give tips on
improvement (some work, some don't) there is little, if any, evidence
of the vendors (i.e.Slidevices and Netgear) showing any rapid progress
towards finding a lasting, ready to implement solution.

I really feel conned out of a lot of time and money for both the
ReadyNas and the Squeezeboxes which have NEVER lived up to the promise
I was given at the time of purchase.

When are we going to see true collaboration and willingness to resolve
 this issue?

Why do you feel conned? If you do not like the SB3 or Duet, send it
back. I believe they both come with a 30-day Satisfaction Guarantee. As
for the ReadyNAS, I had one and it did what it said it would do. Was it
up to the task of my huge CD collection, NO it was not. The ReadyNAS is
also really only meant for a small music collection and not other tasks.
It is NOT a PC, it is an intellegent Network Storage Device. The Thecus
N5200 Pro is in my opinion the minumum equipment as far as an NAS goes
for any small to medium CD collection. And if one has over 5000 CDs, I
strongly suggest that one builds their own NAS based off a minimum of
an Intel P4 machine with 2 GB RAM running some form of Linux (and
before everybody goes crazy, yes you can use older slower PCs, but with
P4 prices where they are why would you). The biggest advantage of
building your own NAS is that you can fix it yourself from regular PC
parts as well as upgrade it anytime.

Finally, if one has a wireless network, why not try keeping the music
files stored on the ReadyNAS and running SqueezeCenter on an old PC.
That way the NAS does not have to deal with SqueezeCenter or all GUI
overhead.

Could you give us some more system details so we can answer your
question properly? As an example, do you have a wireless network in
your home that the server is on? Or can you get ethernet to your router
and second SB3. And I am not saying you need two SB3s, because you can
always move it between the two places but as an example I have my
Transporter in my listening room, Duet in the living room, an SB3 in
the bedroom, an SB3 in the den, and what I call my mobile SB3 that I
move between the shop, garage, outside deck, or anywhere I need music
but do not have an SB3 already setup.

You could use two computers but why would you? It is easier to buy a
wireless router, connect it to your server, and either move the SB3
from location to location within range of your WLAN or buy multiple
SB3s or buy a Duet with multiple SBRs. The server can easily feed music
to 10 or more Squeezebox devices over a wireless LAN while even playing
different music on each player.

Re: [slim] Use Harmony 1000 instead of Duet remote?

2008-04-20 Thread iPhone

abd08;293581 Wrote:
 Hi all,

Do you think it'll be possible in the near future to replace the
Squeezebox Duet remote with the Harmony 1000 (song names et al
 included)?

 Thanks
 Rajiv

In its current build, I think this will never happen. At this time, the
1000 is a one-way IR device (transmit only), which will control just
about any device with an IR remote to include the Transporter and SB3.
The SBR does not have an IR port. In the future they might turn on the
Z Wave so it could control home automation but again this is no help
with the Duet or SBR.

I think that a lot of people just think of the SBC as a very fancy
remote when in fact it is a portable Linux Computer without a keyboard.
Squeezebox Controller uses a Samsung S3C2412 200MHz ARM processor with
64MB of RAM and 64MB of NAND flash, which is expandable via an SD card
slot. The SBC also includes a 3-axis accelerometer tilt sensor. So the
SBC is a WiFi-connected handheld device able to control the streaming
of network-based music with its Linux based Samsung processor with
information displayed on the 2.4-inch, 240x320 color backlit LCD while
using bi-directional communication with the server or PC that
SqueezeCenter is running on. There is much much more going on here and
this only covers the tip of the iceberg. Calling the SBC just a remote
does not do it any justice and this is shown in SD/Logitech choice of
the word Controller to describe it. The IR output and headphone jack
have yet to be activated, so more is to come from the Squeezebox
Controller!

Would I like to see a Harmony SBC or SBC 1000 (a 1000 with the WiFi
card, SBC guts, key matrix and touch wheel), yes I would. I was down to
one remote with my Harmony 1000 because it controls my Transporter and
SB3s (plus the better half no longer had to wake me up just to watch
TV!). It was always either sound with no picture or picture without
sound, now she just has to touch the “Watch TV” icon on the 1000 and
all inputs and outputs are properly set for her to watch TV. Plus there
are no remotes to look for just to get started. Just take the 1000 off
the cradle and press the appropriate Icon. I like the SBC but I would
like to also be down to one remote again with the bonus of having the
SBC as a floater Controller for the Slim Devices.

A nice idea, but the problem is the limited market for the device. Even
with most of the designing already done because both devices already
exist, it would probably add $200 to the already expensive Harmony
1000. I just do not see people paying $700 to $800 for a
universal/controller.

My Harmony lasts for months on a charge. I'm betting the hybrid you

In that case I'd rather stay with the two devices.

 Regards,
 Peter

I am getting about 4 days out of my SBC on a full charge. The longest I
have gone on my Harmony 1000 between charges is 8 days and that was a
slow DVD/TV week. The 1000 goes on the charger about every 4 days also.
I think the bigger display on the 1000 probably has a lot to do with it.
Plus the 1000 wakes up every time it is moved no matter if you need it
to or not.

If the two devices were merged, the unit would probably be bigger then
the 1000 and could then get a larger battery so it might be able to go
a whole week.

My personal opinion on battery life between charges is that the
designer knows that most people do not stay up for 48 hours straight.
This allows for the unit to go into the cradle and get a good charge
while humans sleep!

Re: [slim] Duet skips when playing 48KHz/24bit flac files

 Hi,

I have a few albums in 48KHz/24bits flac format that play fine using my

new Duet Receiver and controller and the 48KHz/24bit files often skips
when playing through the same DAC and same PC running Squeezecenter as
I used with SB3. Both SB's are connected through WLAN to the server in
the room next door. Any ideas?

Squeezenter (v 7.0-17793) is running under Windows XP SP2 on a PC with
AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 4200+ CPU with 2GB RAM.

 Thanks!

Only thing I can think of is that it is a clocking issue. Check the
clocking and timing setting of the DAC and SBR.

And, of course, the site doesn't work in IE6.

Hey Jim,

I am using IE 6.0.29 without any issues. What do you have going on?

This is going on in parallel while I work to deploy a content management

In the meantime, so long as our web properites are *.slimdevices, we'll

destination sites specific to all things Squeezebox/Transporter and not
 part of the greater Logitech.com.

Also, I'm currently working to fix the IE6 bugs, so those of you using

Hey Matthew,

Could we get a link straight to the Forums on the new main page without
going through support. I know that I can create a Favorite, but I never
use them. I just type an S on the URL bar and select SlimDevices.com
from the list. That would be my short wish list. Looking forward to the
new design.

 Thanks,

Just my opinion, but it is a good supply that is well thought out. Now
having said that, the SB3 still has a switcher inside the case so in
the end, why bother?

Do I think there is a benefit from the extra available current over the
OEM supply, personally I do. I had a regulated HP supply on my SB3 for
over a week and had it set to save the peak amp draw. My SB3 will use
more then 2 amps if it is available, YMMV. So yes I like the CI VDC-SB
for the current overhead, but there is still that internal switcher. If
it were me, I would just get a $30 supply that has 3 to 5 amps output.

Its called Sirius or XM! Why reinvent the wheel when there is currently

Besides, I am using SS in my SUV. I use my Mobile SB3. SS is on my

get to use the laptop screen because the Toughbook is in a mount that
they make for it to go between the front bucket seats. The mount base
connects to the bolts that hold the passenger seat in (image an L

Re: [slim] Success! Relatively problem-free setup

RonM;298781 Wrote:
I bought my Duet a couple of weeks ago, but have spent the intervening
time ripping all my CDs to lossless format, doing a pile every time I
sat down at the computer. Quite a lot, 2/3 of my 250 gig USB drive,
purchased for this purpose, is filled (it's USB, but fits into a slot
on the HP computer, called a Pocket Drive).

So today was D-day (as in Duet Day). I'd decided to do a hybrid setup,
although unfortunately the location where the sound equipment has to be
had no ethernet jack. So I drilled a hole in the corner and ran a
cable directly to the router, which is in the basement practically
right below the SB receiver. In principle, I'm a believer in wired
 where possible.

So the setup was hybrid, and everything proceeded smoothly. Had an
extended blue light, during which nothing worked, and I was beginning
to think I had some sort of firewall issue with Norton AV, but in the
fullness of time things sorted and it ALL WORKED.

At first there was some issue with a delay in the controller showing
what was actually playing, but I suspect that had to do with the
Squeezecenter or something else churning cycles on the computer, as it
 too eventually went away.

The music quality is very very good, I'm convinced I can hear a
substantial improvement over the CD player (which is a cheap one).

 Magic!

 R.

Welcome to the Forum and the world of Squeezebox. Glad to hear things
are working well and that you are enjoying the music for that is the
whole idea. Now it is on to your server! I will reply to that thread

plenty of SATA slots for expansion.
If you are a little computer savvy, you can build your own from an old
PC or with all new parts and use Linux for the OS or WHS, cheaper then
off the shelf.

If not entering the Linux world, WHS might be the best choice. I prefer
to build my own servers because I control the parts and cost. And
because I built it, I can service it if need be.

By the way, what is wrong with the supply that came with the Duet?

The company designs an OK product, but that is where it all stops.
Support sucks, no return contact, parts often missing from kits, no
customer resolution.

Buyer beware and purchase at your own risk. Again, if it were me, I
would cancel my order and contact my credit card company. It is also
much cheaper to order a power supply off the Internet from a known
reliable company. Such as:

http://www.apogeekits.com/9vdc_power_adapter_regulated.htm

http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=298

These are just a couple all under $30. There are some nice encapsulated
supplies what are regulated 9VDC with 1 to 2 amp outputs that would work
well with the Duet as well as be a small upgrade.

Hopefully, sooner rather then later. I can tell you something I learned
from a stateside distributor. They have sold out the first two shipments
to their retailers (one just last week) and are begging for more and
were told they would not be getting anymore until the end of May. If
the states retail dealers have to wait, I would beleive it could not be
more then a trickle going overseas. Hopefully since China is closer to

just show up down under. Just my opinion though.

Re: [slim] Netflix Roku do Video

2008-05-20 Thread iPhone

Full Details at: http://www.roku.com/netflixplayer/

I do not think this is what some people think it is. It will only play
movies and TV shows off of a NetFlix account (and does not include new
releases). One can't store video, rip video, watch from ones hard
drive, or even watch ones own DVDs with it. It is just a $100 box so
one can watch NetFlix movies on you big screen instead of just ones PC
screen. And the bad news is that not all NetFlix movies are available,
just some 10,000 titles that most of us have already seen (at least I
have, with several hundred I don't care to see).

Do I think this is the future of video? Not really, but a move in the
right direction. I feel DVDs will be a thing of the past in 5 years. It
will be the Movie Theater, streaming download, or stored rental
download. Using this system will eliminate all copying, the expense of
producing DVDs, there is no longer a need for multiple brick mortar
locations, and nothing to mail or return. We can streaming download all
the old TV shows and movies we want for one set fee every month and
download 5 to 10 current movies in Blu-Ray at around $8 a movie. We
will have to delete a Blu-Ray once at the limit to be able to DL
another, but no worries, we can DL it again anytime for a buck! In this
way they get to sell a box, charge a monthly fee for all the non current
movies and TV shows one can watch, and still make money on a DL basis
per movie for high def formats.

God help us if the CD industry wakes up and figures out how to fix
their broken business model with a system like this!

I personally do not want to see Logitech making a box like this. I want
to see Logitech make a 1080P output Video Network Media Player. Would I
like all my DVDs on my SqueezeCenter NAS to be watched through a HiDef
Video Duet, you can bet the farm I do! I have over 1000 DVDs in
alphabetical order in my media room and would love to rip them to HD
just like my CDs so I never have to touch physical media again. I have
not found a Video Network Media Player that will do Blu-Ray DVDs at a
price I am willing to pay with 1080P output. The other issue is
preserving the 2.35:1 playback of ripped video.

So Logitech, here is an untapped market to move into that you already
have a customer base for the product.

Re: [slim] Transporter - Speaker connection help

Hi. Yes, I'd like the ability to run both systems at the same time and
 playing the same music.

My main listening area I want to run analog signals from the
transporter. I plan to use the transporter's XLR and RCA at the same
 time.

In the home theater I use the Diva for digital processing, so I'm
planning to use a digital connection from the transporter.

Question: Do the XLR, RCA, and Digital all output at the same time?
I've read the XLR/RCA do, but have not found anything on the digital

Question: I believe my only downside to the above plan is lack of
volume control between the transporter and the music room amplifier.
For now I'll have to use the transporter volume control.

The real beauty of the TP/SB is that all the outputs are active with no
messing about with settings or selecting an output.

I also have to side with the feeling that the DAC in the TP would
probably be better then your HT Rxcr. Try using the analog outs into
the AUX or CD input of your Rxcr then listen to the digital input into
the Rxcr to see which gives a better level of enjoyment. If it is just
for background sound during a party or before or after a movie then
just go digital.

I have an older HT Rxcr with an older Burr-Brown Chip processing the
Toslink input. Its a good chip for the HT Rxcr but anybody can hear the
difference between it and feeding the Rxcr with the analog out of the
TP. The analog out has a sharp accurate sound stage with more defined
bass and clearer treble.

In my case, most of time, I'll walk up to the Controller, remove it
from the charging cradle, select my music (usually a Pandora or
Rhapsody station), then place it back in the cradle and go about my
business. Occasionally I'll grab the Controller and take it with me, so
I can fine tune my programming wherever I'm sitting. But most of the
time, the Controller stays in the cradle.

Please feel free to post a message elaborating on your answer.

My SBC comes out of the cradle in the morning. I use it where the
player I am listening to is. At the end of the day, it ends up back in
the bedroom. After about 3 days, instead of being in the bedroom all
night, it goes Back in the Cradle again for the night. Repeat.

I can almost hear Steven Tyler singing Back in the Cradle. I'm back,
I'm back in the cradle again. I'm back, I'm back in the cradle again.
I'm shining up my Controller.

Have you E-mailed Tech Support or called them? This is the Users Forum,

For possible help here, the Forum is going to need more information.
What OS is the server running. What version of SC? What firmware is on
the Controller and Receiver running? What does your network look like?

Well I will give it a go. It is either the tracks you are playing are
so pleasing that your mind is on autopilot and forgets what you have
been doing recently. Or it has something to do with drinking, popping,
or smoking something while enjoying tunes (if this is the case, invite
a friend over before the next listening session so they can take notes
so that you might share which and what it is)! Then of course it could
just be the Aliens or you pressed the secret sequence of SBC buttons
simultaneously that sends out the return homing signal to our parallel
dimension.

Then again it could just be that your choice in the poll should be
answer number three, I tend to carry it around with me but forget
where I set it down!

Re: [slim] Using a Squeezebox Duet without a network.

darrenwm;304266 Wrote:
If you just wanted to pop to a friends and demo use of the Duet remote,
could you simply wire the Duet receiver or any Squeezebox into a laptop
 to access the files?

If doing a demo with both the Receiver and Controller, I would use a
laptop and do a Bridged Install. It is the last install type in the
manual. That way you do not have to deal with any outside networks. The
Receiver is Ethernet to the Laptop. The Controller is ad-hoc WiFi to the
Receiver.

I have done a demo with both an SB3 and Transporter from my laptop with
the laptop running SS 6.5.4. This worked well and let me use my FLAC
files instead of their MP3s. I feel the same can be done for the Duet
using SC 7.0.1. Try it all out at home first making sure it works well.
Then shut it down and take it to your friend’s house.

It has been suggested by friends that they do not mind downloading SC
to their PCs and for me to just bring the Duet, Transporter, or SB3.
That is all well and good, but do they have FLAC files for the best
demo possible? Do they really want you messing with their network? Do
you really want to get a call the next week that such and such does not
work since you brought the Duet over? Not me! For me it is the KISS
principle, do what is easy and less invasive while still doing the best
demo one can with FLAC files. I even bring my own power strip and
interconnect cables so all I need is one outlet and access to the
Pre-Amp/Rcvr or DAC.

Can you reach your SqueezeCenter over the Internet if they have DSL or
Cable? Sure you can. It works best with both ends having static IPs,
you're leaving ports open, means connecting to their network, and if
you made a mistake on your end you better be well versed in Go To My PC
or your driving back home.

i.e.- friends who don't have a very solid grasp of computers and who

professionals and I don't think i would recommend the product to those
folks either. maybe that's mainly due to the fact that most of my
friends have kids and there's just not enough time in the day for such
a trivial activity as tweaking a music server. for myself, I find it
endlessly challenging so I actually enjoy the time spent improving my
squeezecenter. But it's just not a mass market product...yet. I think
in time it will be but that time has not come.

As for the Duet's time, I have to disagree. It is definitely here.
There are more home networks then anyone would care to count. And the
cable and DSL companies will come out and setup your WiFi network with
up to 5 devices when one upgrades to DLS or Cable Internet.

Where we are probably similar is in the need for our music and tags to
be exact and correct. I admit that I am anal when it comes to ripping
CDs and tagging my FLAC Files. I have a huge collection, so my server
is large and powerful (and I enjoy tweaking and messing with it). But
where we are different is in the way this translates into what we think
others are able to do. Others could care less and just hit play. No tag
corrections, no server tweaking (just the home PC with a 250GB drive
running SC), no looking for improvements, just enjoying the music
without the need for hunting for a CD.

Not knowing your friends, I still think I have to disagree about your
'normal' friends and especially the ones in IT not being ready or able
to use a Duet, Transporter, or Classic. If my younger sister with no
common sense or computer skills other then where the power switch is
can use an SB3 and Duet, almost anybody can. We had my mother’s
eightieth birthday party at my house last year and she saw my
Squeezeboxes. Now she has a Duet and an SB3 and only asked me if she
should get a WiFi network after getting the Duet. I said yes, so she
had the Geek Squad install a Linksys router and an Xbox 360. She was
able to setup and use the SB3 all by herself. After getting the Duet
and asking about WiFi, she had the Geek Squad install and set those
pieces up knowing it was over her head. I don’t think you are giving
your friends enough credit.

These products are consumer products just like anything else. Do they
have to know computer basics to use one, it helps unless they have
somebody set it all up for them. If one has a computer and has used
iTunes, it is not a stretch that one can buy an SB3 and install it.
That is what the Tech Support department is for: The folks that need
some help after their purchase.

i also think that one of most attractive aspects of the squeezecenter

Well from that point of view, I completely understand where you are

need or use all the time (which are few). I can see why some people
complain about CPU usage. Yes it can be high, but most of the time they
have every possible plugin running.

If open source has any downside, maybe it is to many plugins for us to
tinker and play with. I am glad I stopped programing 20 years ago or I
would be up to 4Am every night building code to try on the Squeezebox.

Does anyone know if the Duet is available locally in New Jersey?

Do they have FRY'S, Magnolia Audio Video (Tweeter's high end stores) or
Brand Smart in Jersey? Those are the local retailers that sell them
here. You can always go online and order one from Slim Devices or
Crutchfield.

Hello Pat,

Not sure I understand your post. I was not asking any questions. I was
making suggestions for possible places for the OP to look for retail of
Squeezebox products. As is the case with most websites, they are not
always up to date. Fry's is not even listed as a retailer on the Slim
Devices website but I have seen Squeezeboxes on their shelf every time
I have been in there.

Atlanta has multiple locations for Fry's, Brand Smart, and Magnolia. I
did make a mistake though in that Best Buy not Tweeter owns Magnolia.
So I guess in a way, Best Buy does carry Squeezeboxes.

I didn't mean to infer that Tweeter was high end. I was saying that
Magnolia was higher then Tweeter, but that should have been higher then
Best Buy. A step up on the Audio Video rung then your average big box
consumer electronics store.

At any rate, I can only speak for my local area. I was making
suggestions to look for those stores in his area or stores similar to
them. Because again, the web is not always up to date.

Users Grein002 and Cord, can you give us some details and information

Have either of you added any new programs or hardware lately?
What OS, Computer, Network equipment, Wired or Wireless LAN?
Version of SS or SC are you running? Firmware version of hardware?
Lastly list what is attached or uses the LAN?

The answer is NO. But there is a means to put your music elsewhere and
access it via the Internet.

When ones PC/Server is off, one can only use Internet sources with the
SB3. I don't have a Music Locker account, but it is my understanding
that one stores ones music with them so that one can access it over the
Internet without having ones PC on. This is a pay service so it will
cost money to have ones PC off and still have access to ones home music
library over an Internet connection.

Still no solution for this, it's driving me mad. Was working for a good

The problem is still that the receiver itself is getting 192.168.1.1 as
it's internal address for my SqueezeCenter, when that is the router. My
SqueezeCenter is at 192.168.1.103, which SqueezeCenter acknowledges in
 it's status page.

I'd really like to pick up a few more receivers but until I can resolve
this it's just not worth it :/ Only having internet radio just can't
 justify it.

Now that I think about it, this happened once a long time ago to me.
Could not get to SS and it was because they was a network reset and the
addresses flip flopped on the restart. There is a tread some place about
this IP type problem. I can never find anything by searching so I can
not help you there. I had to clear out the IP addresses in the parts
involved. Did a full factory reset on my router and cable modem then
started the stuff up one at a time with a couple minutes between each
unit. When the DHCP was handed out, all was fine after that.

I know you have said that all the parts have their IP address just
fine, but in my mind that is the problem. They all have IP addresses
but they are not talking to each other so to me that means that they
all need to lose their address and start over with an assigned DHCP
from the router.

Note: this was before my Duet so I can not say for certain that this
will fix your receiver problem. But the thought here is that this is a
Network issue more then an issue of the Receiver. Yes the Receiver can
not find SC, but again that is most likely due to a Network issue.

Re: [slim] Maximum amps on RG6

2008-06-08 Thread iPhone

I am setting up SB3 in several rooms as part of a whole house system.
In several of the rooms additional wiring would be extremely dificult
to run but I do have a surplus pair of RG6 cable to each room. Yes I
should have run extra cat5 when the walls were open but I got cheap at
the wrong time--penny wise ,pound foolish! I want to use one RG6 to
run 5v DC from a highly regulated power supply in the basement (to the
SB3's mounted on the wall.) In the other RG6 cable I want to run 24v DC
to the volume/distribution units from a second regulated power supply in
the basement. I need to know what the amperage rating would be for the
RG6 and I'm not sure where to find this type of information as this
isn't what RG6 is designed to do. Maybe I can't use it. I'm thinking
I need it to carry at least 4 amps in each case.

Please direct me to another forum, if this is the wrong place to post.
 Thanks George

Their are about a million variables here. Can you see the jacket on the
RG6 to get the cable identifier off of it? Can this be done? It probably
can. But I would ask is it the correct application? As an example, what
if the power supply want bad? One could easily lose all the SB3s
instead of just one. Why waste a nice regulated power supply driving a
bunch of extra cable length that doesn't really need to be used? Why
create an antenna to pick up all the RFI and EMI in your home and take
it right to your source device?

Are there not going to be other wires? Interconnects and speaker cable
for the speakers? What is an extra wall wart PS cable when the whole
thing is not completely wireless anyway?

In my job we put DC on coax feedline all the time to power tower top
receiver pre-amps. The only reason we do this is to get a weak signal
down a 1800 foot run of feedline to the receiver. One less cable to
worry about and if a 3 inch round copper feedline can't carry 12VDC at
1A 1800 feet nothing can. Also remember all this stuff is outside and
without the possibility of burning down ones house if something goes
wrong in the walls!

Maybe listing your goal for this project would be a be help? What is
the end result you are trying to accomplish?

Re: [slim] Maximum amps on RG6

2008-06-09 Thread iPhone

gsawdy;310119 Wrote:
Thank you for your reply iPhone,
when the house was being built I ran lots of wires for a complete Linn
system. At that time I didn't know anything about computers as a
source nor Squeezeboxes. Installing a server/squeeze system will save
a lot of , is more versitile, and probably give better sound. Most
rooms I can get to from either the basement or the attic but I've got a
couple of rooms where the roof/ceiling comes down low on the walls and
there is no access to run more wires. I need to install the SB3 on the
wall with no visible wiring, so wall warts are a no no.

I appreciate your concern for fire issues. I had planned on installing
2 amp in-line fuses both in the basement and at the SB3. The RFI issue
I hadn't thought about and don't know how much weight to attach to it.
Your advice here is appreciated. Is there a way to block the rfi?

I realize that coax is not the correct solution. Perhaps a better or
safer solution would be to take a single run from the power supply to
the attic and then inject it into the 4 unused wires in the CAT5 to
feed each SB. I could intercept the CAT5 just before it disappears
 into the roof-ceiling union.

Oh, I have the regulated power supply and no other use for it. It's an
Acopian A series so it is far better than the wall wart.

In Edit: The cable is labelled Coleman 32041 RG6/U Quad Shield 18AGW
(It's a funny looking 8, but I think it's an eight.) And the CAT5 is
shielded. Should the CAT shield be connected anywhere? or just float?

Well it looks like this was a study in time management. The Coax cable
can't power more then one Squeezebox. Its maximum current rating is 2.3
amps and just one SB3 is close to maxxing that out. The circuit would
have to be a parallel circuit so that the voltage would stay constant
at 5VDC and the current would vary with the load. Once the second SB3
was turned on, the current demand would exceed the rating of the Coax.
Do not even think about using CAT5 to power even one SB3 (most CAT5 is
rated at less the half an Amp). As to your shielding question on the
CAT5, it depends on if it is really shielded or not. Fully shielded
CAT5 has a metal encased RJ45 plug on each end so the whole cable is
grounded to the chassis it is connected to. If the CAT5 does not have
these encased RJ45s, it could have a full-length shield cover but it
would not be grounded so it would not reject EMI.

One last note, a two-amp fuse in the basement will not work because the
current will increase with each SB3 added to the circuit. As an example,
if you had wiring able to carry the load for three SB3s in parallel, the
fuse at the supply would be a 10-amp fuse and each SB3 would have an
inline 2-amp fuse.

Possible solution (involving more work) would be to make separate drops
with 16AWG two-conductor wire assuming 50-foot runs. Use an inline fuse
in each run at the power supply end and connect all the fused leads to
the PS positive terminal and the set the output voltage for about
5.5VDC. At 2 amps for each unit with 50 feet of 16AWG you should end up
with about a half-volt line drop. Smaller cheaper wire could be used,
but the longer the run the larger the voltage drop. Of course all this
is using the theoretical numbers, your mileage WILL vary. Most times it
is all right to use the next smaller gauge (larger number)if current
handling ability and voltage drop are acceptable.

Re: [slim] Maximum amps on RG6

2008-06-09 Thread iPhone

I keep going back to the fact that you are planning to hang this on the
wall. That is fine, and you are talking about getting power to the
unit. What you are not talking about is all the other required items.

One can not just power an SB3 and hang it on the wall. It has to be
wired to Ethernet or talk wirelessly to a network. Next it has to be
connected to a HT Receiver/IAmp/Amp or Powered Speakers. The SB3 is not
a Sonos and does not have a server or built in amp. So there are going
to be other wires or other devices that need power at the SB3 install
location.

How are these issues being handled? What are you going to be playing
the music over (speakers or powered speakers)?

My neighbor has two things that might apply. In his basement he has cut
a hole in his wall and mounted a plasic cut-in box to set an SB3 into.
On the other side of the wall is a utility closet that has his server,
wireless router, a Denon Receiver, and the wires coming from the four
(2 Thiel PowerPlane 2.1 in-wall and 2 HighPlane 1.2 ceiling) Speakers.
This is a very neat install. Only power and stereo RCAs come into the
back of the cut-in box. Upstairs he has a very large Atomic Wall clock
what only uses a wall wart (no battery option). He put a power strip in
his attic, drilled a hole to drop the DC lead off the wall wart down the
inside of the wall to a hole through the wall powering the clock.
Something like this might work.

In my home, I installed a chandilier lift. The power was already there
for the light, but I needed a power source to run the lift. It voids
the warranty if I borrow the power from the light circuit. So I found a
15 amp circuit for wall outlets and extended the circuit with Romex and
installed a metal junction box to code with an outlet.

If there is room above the ceiling where you want to install the SB3 on
the wall, you might be able to do the same thing. Extend the AC with an
outlet, plug the wall wart into the new outlet and drop the DC pigtail
of the wall wart down inside the wall.

 Thanks!

There is no support for 802.11N anywhere! Each company is using their
own version of the future possible Standard (read 802.11N is not yet a
Standard). One company's N router works with another company's N
card only because both fall back to 802.11G! At this time if one wants
to run N, I strongly recommend buying all the same brand WiFi (like a
Linksys router and wireless NIC). This is currently why Slim Devices
only uses G. If one has an N router already, the Transporter, SB3,
and Duet will work with it fine because the Router will fall back to
G.

As far as going with another Network Media Player, be my guest. This is
the Slim Devices Forum and most folks here are going to tell you to get
a Squeezebox. It is a better unit and less money. You are not keyholed
into using an amp that is in the box plus you can use any computer as
your server (or build your own if you know what I mean). ROKU is crap
(I gave mine away, not even bothering to list it on EBAY). The Sonos is
expensive. And in my opinion, have you all boxed in with what you can do
and can't do. And they have no Plugins. The Squeezebox is a much better
value and has so many possibilities. For the price of a full base Sonos
setup $999, you can buy a complete five room setup with a Duet and four
receivers! And you get to choose the amps and speakers.

These are hard choices picking between these two systems. Squeezebox
being a better value, more flexible, the Plugins (check the WiKi), and
open source makes it an easier choice in my book and in my experience.

For both Howard and Jimzak, let me guess that both of you are using
Windows? Between Windows and the fact that the Squeezebox IS a Network
Media Player (the keyword being Network) a bunch of things can already
be wrong before one starts out to setup a Duet. As Pat said, I had mine
up and running in 10 minutes and I was sitting on the couch taking my
time. I have had no real problems with it whatsoever. When I set Duets
up for friends the average time after installing SC to get it up and
running is about 6 minutes. Most of these friends know next to nothing
about PCs much less Networks. I do not get phone calls from them about
having problems. Maybe it is because they do not fiddle around with
their PCs or have extra apps runnning all the time.

Main issues that I run into are Windows, Active Anti-virus (waste of
time and PC CPU resourses), and Firewalls. If one is having major
problems my suggestion is build a server for SC or drag an old PC out
and only use it for SC. Is a stand alone server required? No it is not.
Would most people be better off running it on a server? I think they
would.

Is the Squeezebox of everybody, not yet as long as the world keeps
being contaminated by MicroSoft and folks don't have a home network.

Fiddling occurs in spurts. I had a lot of trouble at the beginning,
about 1:1 for about a week. It would then act up every 1-2 days for a
couple of weeks, but I could usually get it to work with a few minutes
of fiddling, and then could listen for a couple of hours. Now it acts
up about once a week. When that happens, I usually just turn it off and
do something else, and when i come back it more than likely works.

I like the idea of the Duet so much, and enjoy it so much when it does
work, that I put up with this performance, but if it were a TV or radio
or any other household appliance, I'd return it in a second.

When you say turn it off, do you mean with the remote or do you unplug
it? The Squeezebox family is never Off, when you press Power or
select 'Turn Off Player' from the SBC, the unit goes into standby (or
sleep if you prefer), but anything but Off. If you are not unplugging
it and it starts working again after being asleep, it sounds like a
network issue or software conflict on your PC.

Most people start fiddling with the Duet/SB3 when they should leave it
alone until they eliminate their own network or PC/Server being the
issue. After all the Squeezebox family of products are Network Devices.
If the PC/Server or network are not playing nice the Squeezebox doesn't
have a chance to play at all.

I find many people quick to blame the product when it is their Network,
PC/Server, Firewall, software conflict, LAN or PC power saving settings,
or AntiVirus that is actually the problem. Sometimes all that is needed
is to reboot ones PC and restart SC.

Hello Malone and welcome to the Forum. It sounds like you have an SB3
because you are on SS 6.5.4 and not SC 7.x. The Controller comes with
the Duet or can be purchased separately. This is what we are talking
about:

The SqueezeBox Controller or SBC for short is way more then a remote

My main ripper is dBpowerAmp (switched from EAC). Its tagging has been

Another nice feature if you have an All-in-One printer or scanner is
the ability to scan the cover art into the rip. I have used this
feature 4 times. I had a concern about quality using the sacn and there
is barely any difference between what gets pulled down vs a scan

So far I have been very happy with the switch to dBpowerAmp.

I have just always used the Pause button as a Mute button. I listen

I have radio stations and Internet Radio saved in playlists. I also use
the Playlist to bookmark my most used stations with just a single entry
so I can pull them up from anywhere (Web UI, Controller, IR Remote). Do
these fail out from time to time? Yes they do, but very rarely is it the
fault of the SB3. It is because the URL changed or the stream died at
the radio station end, or the Internet was down.

So exactly what do you want to do and how are you trying to do it?

Re: [slim] Duet review on Notebookreview

2008-06-20 Thread iPhone

cliveb;313726 Wrote:
Once again we read about someone having setup problems, primarily due to
lack of documentation. Does the Duet come complete with the user guide?
(I got my Duet as part of the beta trial, so I don't know how it's
 packaged for retail).

In my experience, if you carefully follow the setup instuctions in the
user guide, things go pretty smoothly. Too many people these days
expect to pick up a random piece of consumer electronics and operate it
by trial and error. I've been guilty of this myself, including
struggling with setting up my Duet.

So if the user guide isn't included, it damn well should be. And there
should also a big note explaining that you really need to follow the
instructions for setup - don't just try and wing it. Perhaps a
removable sticker over the Controller's screen that says please read
the manual - it's worth the effort.

As Most all devices today in this price range, the full manual is a
download away. If one is buying a NMP, it is not a big stretch to
assume the buyer has Internet and can download a PDF file and save some
trees (and I am not even a tree hugger and agree with this) by always
having the manual saved on the PC and know where to find it.

The Duet does come with a quick start manual. The manual is good, but
people have to read and then follow it. It is like cutting lumber,
measure twice cut once. Setting up the Duet, read manual twice before
touching the unit, setup once! The problem today is that nobody reads
anymore. One more reason not to waste money and trees by putting a
manual in the box that is a few clicks away on the Internet. The
Internet also makes it easier to update the manual. This is where most
companies miss the opportunity to apply the feedback they receive from
consumers. Its online so update it often.

We are also not talking about adding a CDP or DVR to ones system. These
are simple to setup, input/output and power. All systems are not the
same, but they all have all three. A home network and PC have a 1000
variables and almost as many brands with their own quirks. Then there
is how many million possibilities for different software programs. It
is impossible to cover all these in a manual or to make it plug n
play!

Welcome to modern consummer devices that take advantage of ones home
network without being a closed system.

Re: [slim] Wierd library problem with SB Duet

 all has been well.

All of a sudden today, I'm having a strange problem. If I select the
SB3 in my den as the device I'm controlling, I can see all of my 38,000
songs. If I select the SBR in my kitchen, I can't see any of my local
music - just the services I subscribe to through SqueezeNetwork.

I tried restarting the server, and restarting the controller. Same
 problem.

Any idea why I would see my local content when controlling one device
but not when controlling the other? Wierd.

Thanks for any input you can provide.

It sounds like you Duet is on SqueezeNetwork Server and not on your
SqueezeCenter Server. Without more info I don't know if this it the
issue of not.
On the Controller press Home. Select Settings, Select Music Source,
under the Music Source screen you should see the name of your SC Server
on your WLAN. Select this. You are not back on SC with your Duet.
If you get to the Music Source screen and your SC Server is not there,
you have a network issue.

Re: [slim] Controller Wireless Reception

2008-06-23 Thread iPhone

mattybain;314326 Wrote:
Whilst it is true that wi-fi is complex and often the source of problems
there definitely seems to be something going on that is not being
addressed. Numerous people have posted with problems, often who already
have a SB3 which should rule out wirless issues.

I have 2 SB3's and 2 Duet's, the SB3's hold great signal and the duets
are all too close to the router to not get a good signal.

However I have noticed that one of the SBC's is *much* worse than the
other one. It doesn't hold a signal very well, often loses connection
and more often than that it takes an age to come up with the list of
 artists.

The other one is brilliant and works like a charm, excatly how I wanted
the SBC to behave, quick and holds a good connection.

The are on the same firmware and obviously the SC is the same version,
what exactly is going on here? I have switched the SBC's round so the
bad one is very near to the router which has solved my issues for now.

From a Wi-Fi and maybe more importantly an RF standpoint, we can't
compare the Controller to any other Slim Devices product. It is a
handheld mobile device. It has the lowest profile (read not good for
antenna position) and many times has the users hand and/or body
blocking the path to the access point.

Additionally since it has the weakest antenna placement options, it is
more susceptible to interference from other household devices as well
as from neighboring Wi-Fi networks.

All in all, the Duet and its Controller are a fairly good first effort.
This is especially true when one looks at the fact that it had to be
designed around a standard that already excised and has to work and
play with equipment functioning in a specific way and domain. One might
ask if the Controller could have been designed differently. The answer
is of course yes it could have, but then it would have most likely been
a completely new system with no backward compatibility. More importantly
it would have most likely needed its own non-WiFi transmitters and
receivers. Most multi-unit Squeezebox users have a Home WiFi Network so
it makes sense to use that and not reinvent the wheel.

This might be to painful for some users, but has anybody with reception
problems (and a wireless access point far from where the Controller is
used most) thought about running the Duet wired and putting the
Controller in Adhoc Mode?

Re: [slim] SB has brought my network to its knees

2008-06-24 Thread iPhone

RioTubes;314597 Wrote:
I need some help. Lately, after I stream music to SB I can't surf the
web or use other devices on the network. After trying various things I
have been able to get the web browser working again only to experience
the same issue after once again streaming music.

Squeezecenter is installed on a pc with Windows XP. The network is all
hardwired: cable from the wall Motorola Surfboard 5100 cable modem
Linksys WRT54GL router router LAN jacks as follows:

 - SB2
 - PC running squeezecenter
 - Vonage (via Moto 1005 ATA)

The above hardware config is the optimal config as shown on the Slim
Networking WIKI. Before this problem developed, I had the Vonage box
before the router, but the VOIP calls and surfing were unbearably slow
and poor quality. I thought it might be my old Dlink router so I
replaced it with the Linksys...and placed it in front of the VOIP box.
It was working better than ever; that is until I stream music and then
 everything else quits.

Is SB hogging all the ports or are there IP conflicts? I'd appreciate
any advise...as I cannot bear another 90 minute call with TimeWarner
that goes nowhere. Thanks in advance!

The SB can't hog the ports, it can only use the port it is on. Can it
use bandwidth, it does, but not all the bandwidth of a Linksys router.
I also have Vonage VOIP. I am having no issues with anything and I have
a larger network due to using both LAN (all four ports, Main PC, Vonage
Router, Transporter, SC NAS) and WLAN (2 Desktop PCs, Laptop, Duet, 3
SB3, Controller, iPhone). Is it just the one PC on your wired network?

I would connect as follows which sounds like the way you are connected
but let us make sure. First is the Cable Modem, which is connected to
the WAN port (Blue) of the Linksys. First yellow port should be your
PC, port two your Vonage router, port three your SB2, and port four
whatever. Should the router ports matter, not really, but in practice
things have always worked easier this way.

Are you using DHCP or do all devices have assigned IP addresses? Are
you using a software firewall or active virus scanner? Please describe
your PC and OS. What version of SC are you running?

Re: [slim] Controller Wireless Reception

2008-06-24 Thread iPhone

Mushroom_3;314548 Wrote:
I find that post quite astonishing really. As I read it, you are saying
that Slim Devices (Logitech) released a product (the Controller) they
knew had limitations and probably wouldn’t work properly; but us
customers, who have paid good money for the product, should be grateful
 we have it at all.

You may find this strange, but that is not my expectation when
purchasing a product. (especially when I have a Squeezebox that works
 perfectly.)

WOW, you might have read something into my post that was not there, but
I understand what your saying. What I was saying was only that Logitech
released a new gizmo that people have a higher expectation then they
should based on prior products that are completely different from the
new gizmo! The Apple and Oranges thing. One can't make comparisons of
the Controller based on past performance of an SB3.

There is a past great example of over expectation. Because some idiot
decided to call a full duplex two way radio with a keypad that had
access to the telephone system a Cellular Phone, everybody expected
the Cell Phone to have the reliability that they had come to expect
from Ma Bell, IE no dropped calls. It’s a radio not a landline, get
over it. And people bought those first generation phones anyway, and
they are still being improved today.

Another good example is the iPhone. Why in the world would it be
released without 3G when 3G was available and already in wide use? It
has a build in iPod, but no stereo Bluetooth. Things my BlackJack
already had, but I still bought an iPhone. I needed its ability to view
real web pages not just mobile web pages.

The Controller is the first release of a new Gizmo. It is not as large
as an SB3 (read not a lot of antenna options), it is mobile (not left
in one place with a good signal), many times has ones hand over the
antenna, is saddled with over expectations (IMHO), and more importantly
is trying to be used outside its intended purpose by many. As an
example, it was never designed to be used poolside (no outdoor display
and not waterproof). I have three separate pool play lists or use
random mix while in the pool. Yes my Controller is outside, but it is
under the covered part of the deck laying beside a towel if somebody or
I want a change in Music.

The Controller works great for me but maybe that is because I know and
more importantly except its limitations and maximize its use inside
those boundaries. It is after all a wireless device and as such they
all have limitations. My best advice for Duet users is to maximize ones
WiFi network. This will allow one to use the Controller to the best of
its ability.

Is there a way to hard reset it?

 Thanks a lot,

Hello Sammy and welcome to the Forum. The users manual is available
online at:
http://www.slimdevices.com/documentation/WEB_Duet_User_Guide_EN.pdf

To restart Squeezebox Receiver, press and hold the LED button for three
seconds until it begins slowly blinking red.
To perform a Factory Resettings, hold the LED button for five seconds
until it quickly blinks red.

Here are the color codes for the display LED:

Appendix B: Button Color Codes
The following information covers the colors displayed by the button on
Squeezebox Receiver. It is useful for troubleshooting.

No light: Squeezebox Receiver is OFF.
Low white: Squeezebox Receiver is ON but no music is playing.
Bright white: Squeezebox Receiver is ON and music is playing.
Fast blinking white: Automatic software update is in progress.
Solid red: Starting up.
Slow blinking red: Waiting to be configured for your network.
Fast blinking red: Factory reset in progress.
Yellow: Connecting to your network.

If the light remains yellow, it means that the player is having trouble
connecting to the network. If you are using a wireless network, please
see the Troubleshooting section in this User Guide.
Green: Connected to your network and waiting to be assigned an IP
address by the DHCP server.
If the light remains green, confirm that your wireless router is
providing DHCP service. In some wireless network installations, the
router may be configured to limit the number of IP addresses for
security purposes. If DHCP is running correctly, check to see if the
router has run out of IP addresses.
Blue: Connected to the network and waiting to connect to a music source
(such as SqueezeNetwork or SqueezeCenter). If you are attempting to
connect to SqueezeCenter and the light remains blue, the most likely
cause is a firewall running on the computer on which SqueezeCenter is
installed. See Appendix A: Configuring Your Firewall. If you are
attempting to connect to SqueezeNetwork and the button 28 Logitech®
remains blue, check to make sure that your Internet connection is
working correctly.
Blinking Purple: This indicates an unrecoverable hardware error.
Please contact Logitech Technical Support for an RMA. Even if cycling
Squeezebox Receiver’s power alleviates the problem, the player should
still be returned for a replacement.

To restart Squeezebox Receiver, press and hold the button for three
seconds
until it begins slowly blinking red. To perform a reset to factory
settings, hold the button for five seconds until it quickly blinks red

If the money is there, I would buy a Duet and two Receivers (for total

and one of the big wigs can keep it in the office. All the Receivers
can be reached with the Web UI and if anybody has a Nokia 880 or
iTouch/iPhone by that way also if there is a WLAN.

The only way a Receiver can't be controlled is by IR Remote. Anything
else you can do with an SB3, you can do with an SBR.

I'm uncertain whether to go for A5's, which I understand need to be
brought away from the walls, because of their rear venting, or go with
A2's. Do A2's have the same back wall restriction and would they fill
 the room adequately with sound?
I'd hate to get the wrong item and then have to upgrade later.

I think it comes down to budget and type of listening. If the price of
the A5s is not part of the equation, get the A5s. Speakers are the most
important part of any system and I recommend buying the best you can
afford at the time. The other components can be upgraded over time
without a need to upgrade the speakers (which is not the case here).

Next issue would be the purpose of the listening room. If it is just
background music, the A2s would probably be enough. If you are actually
listening, I would go with the A5s.

Obviously I never play both devices concurrently.
I'm concerned that I may be compromising the sound or causing damage by
using a parallel connection like that.
Should I introduce an A/B switch to select between the squeezebox and
 the portable mp3 player ?

If I were using a switch, I would use a true A/B switch that switches
both the signal and ground lines not just the signal line. This type of
switch provides full isolation of both output devices. The main problem
I see is that you are using a simple Y splitter, you are probably using
the headphone jacks on both devices which is not recommended for the
Squeezebox. You should be using the RCAs to provide a signal to the
computer speakers.

As to sound quality, you are joking, right? You are using computer
speakers, that should say it all.

My advice: get a true A/B switch. Once you have the switch determine
what type of cables you need. As an example, you could get a Stereo RCA
male to mini cable, A/B switch with minis, and use the current mp3
player cable. Not knowing the MP3 player, you would probably be alright
just getting the Stereo RCA male to mini cable and using the Y splitter
you have as long as you only have one device on at a time.

Last question, who needs an MP3 player at the same location that they
have a Squeezebox? My hard drives hold all my music, there will never
be an MP3 player larger enough to hold my library. Just wondering?

Hello,
Do not know if this can be used overseas, but it is worth checking into
I guess. I use Pricewatch.com. Click on Barebones, find the lowest
price, next click on the item which takes you to the dealers site. Most
dealer sites show the special and ask if you want to add anything to
configure a barebones the way you want it. Lowest price guaranteed, one
handling fee if any (lots have free shipping, FedEx Saver), and the box
the way you want it. As an example:
Intel Pentium D 920 Barebones w/ 3.0GHz/800FSB Dual Core Pentium D 920
CPU -ASRock Conroe1333-D667MBoard - PCIe X16 - 7.1 Ch Audio - 10/100
LAN - DDR2 - 2 IDE 4 SATA - 8 USB 2.0 - w/ Heatsink Fan - Beige or
Black 450W Mid-Tower – 1GB of RAM – Assembled and tested with 1Yr
Warranty for $177.23 including free shipping.

Add your hard drive and an old CD drive and you are on your way with
mostly new stuff for under $200. Micro Center has 500 GB WD SATA drives
for $99 if you do not have a Hard Drive laying around. If you have RAM
laying about, you are looking at $139.98 delivered and its not a
refurb!

Re: [slim] SB and MP3 player connected to speakers

2007-12-27 Thread iPhone

Sounds like a plan. Since you 'have' to get an A/B Switch, might as well
make sure the source from the SB3 is coming from the RCA outs instead of
the headphone jack while you are buying a switch and proper cables. The
headphone jack on the SB should really only be used for head phones.

Maybe even easier for your father would be headphones with the MP3
player and the proper Stereo RCA to mini for the SB3 and powered
speakers. If he really likes the SB3 and can handle it, I am betting
the MP3 player is only going to be used when away from the PC anyway ie
portable with headphones. Just a thought.

The RIAA claims ripping your own CDs is illegal!

The RIAA thinks everything is illegal except itself. It sues everybody
and anything to try to justify its existence. They came into my wife's
business and said they were going to sue her if she did not stop
playing CDs over the store's in-ceiling speaker system. They said the
music was for her customers and not her personal use and that she had
to get a pay service such as Muzak so the artist would be compensated!
My next experience with the RIAA was them coming into my favorite
watering hole and telling the owner (member of a famous 70/80s rock
band) that he was no longer allowed to get up on stage and play his own
songs between the sets of the bands he hired. Can you image an
organization having the power to tell a person he can not sing his own
songs in the club he owns! As if playing and singing his own songs was
hurting anybody. If anything it might cause somebody to think, Hey, I
remember that song, think I'll go buy the CD. Besides does the RIAA
think he was taking royalties out of his own pocket and they needed to
protect him from himself?!

The RIAA is also the group that is killing Internet Radio with the help
of the CRB. Royalties when up 37.5% in 2007 over 2006. By the year 2010,
it will cost almost 2 cents (0.0190) in royalties to stream one song to
one listener. It is impossible to get enough ad time to pay for that as
well as royalties becoming 150 to 200% of total revenue. This will end
Internet Radio in the United States by 2010 if nothing it done about
it.

I have a better idea, ban Utube and all those other stupid bandwidth

put a surcharge on downloading bandwidth hog video files! Time Warner
better also wake up because two companies are already selling TV and
movie content over the Internet so you no longer need Cable TV. They
are going to lose revenue on cable TV and end up with broadband

Besides in the end it will come down to the consumer making adjustments

does not work and came up with multiple unlimited packages. Because
that is an oxymoron, all that really happened was some consumers felt
better paying the price they felt was reasonable.

I know there is another poll about building an external amp. I would
actually like to see something much simpler: A SlimBox Receiver with a

Just like the Sonos, I would like to have something I just plug-in,
connect the speakers and go. I don't want to have to worry about
connections, power switching, multiple wall warts, hissing while the
 music isn't playing, etc.

To go after the mass market, I really think they need this. The
average person can probably pick out some speakers, but I don't think
they want to mess with IR blasters, etc.

Not to Flame, but if you want a Sonos, buy the over priced piece of
junk! Slim Devices is doing the right thing, no built in amp to jack up
the price. They have a superior product at a price better for the
consumer.
This is NOT an iPod or MP3 player. It is a Network Media Player that
will play high-resolution music files (FLAC). If you want a cheap amp
to go with any old speakers, buy one. Don't ask SD to waste time and
money on bad ideas. If you just have to have an amp solution built into
your SBR, buy a pair of AudioEngine2s and be done with it especially if
you are just playing MP3s. If you are listening to FLAC, buy a Duet,
nice amp, and a great pair of speakers being happy in the money you
saved over the over priced Sonos.

 2) SB3 stuttering even with buffer full and over 80% Wireless signal

I am trying to have Logitech to acknowledge they may have an issue in
 this area and properly investigate.

I was having both of these problems and more with my SB3. My SB3 would
play for 30 seconds and stop. Then the song would start over and play
for 20 seconds then stop. After several stops, starts, and stops, the
player would either reboot or show playing on the GUI but no audio.

So, I bought a new Linksys WRT300N and after installing it, all my
problems went away. Not bad mouthing D-Link (because it served me well
for 5 years), but it must have been the source of my troubles. I have
not had a single issue since the Linksys has been installed.

So my questions would be: What equipment are you using? What addressing
are you using? Do some or all the issues disappear if you Ethernet your
SB3?

I really think a bunch of these problems are specific to the
homeownwer's network. I was even having some trouble using my
Transporter wirelessly with the D-Link and there were only 5 vertical
shelves between them.

the Transporter needs to be big enough to keep from being pulled off

I was having all kinds of SB3 issues. Stopping, rebooting, playing the

the wireless network, not an SB3 issue (other then not enough data).

Problem solved with the Linksys WRT 300N. System and all SB3s have been

the SB3 anywhere in the house as well as anywhere on my property. Can't

Is there a logical way to layout the whole sight so that new people

Cool Beans. Thanks CeeJay and all the others that keep the WIKI
current. The WIKI would not be the wonderful resource it has become
without your efforts.

Back on topic but still about the WIKI, I still believe that finding
some way to get beginners to read/search the WIKI before posting would
reduce some of the noise on the Forum, relieve the veteran posters of
repeated identical questions that stress them out, as well as keep
beginners from becoming frustrated to the point that posts need to be
moderated.

As to moderating, Slim Devices deserves credit for having a very light
hand as well as being open to allow all opinions even if they are
critical of their products. Additionally I believe there has yet to be
a post from a real SD user that was deleted (besides pure commercial
ads from non-SD users). Questionable posts were only locked to read

I'm guessing. You could add a larger screen to boot and still have a
small form factor. I don't see a necessity for maintaining an old
standard. Computers used to come in the same size box but that's not
 the case any more.

I can not agree completely with the analogy to computers. True,
consumer PCs have gotten smaller and so have commercial PCs, but even
though the commercial PCs are smaller many still come in RU sizes
(smaller then before, but still RU). Why is this? Because they meet a
standard and are still rack mounted so they can be stacked vertically
to use all available space and make them easier to service and
interconnect.

Taking a look at the major audio and video rack manufactures, their
main product lines are still for 19-inch wide equipment and most have
an offering for actual rack mounting. Most of my gear came with rack
mount ears or has an option for rack mounting.

The quoted post contains the main reason to keep the Transporter the
width it currently is. The current size does conform to “the Standard”,
which will probably be around as long as there are Class A power amps,
tube gear, and A/V receivers. Besides the current size looks great with
all my other gear in the media room. My SB3 looks out of place (but
sounds great) on the Stand Design Rack in the living room with the rest
of the 19-inch gear. I will be buying a Duet so I can hide the SBR in
the living room system and use the SBC with it, the Transporter, and
multi SB3s.

Re: [slim] Last.fm not appearing in Slimserver

2008-02-26 Thread iPhone

lizhs;253724 Wrote:
I've been struggling for ages to try and get last.fm playing through my
squeezebox. I understand that if I go through Slimserver Server
settings / Internet Radio, Last.fm should appear as one of the
default listings? It doesn't for me. I have 6 items listed there, Live
Music Archive first, to Slim Picks last. I've downloaded the latest
 last.fm and slimscrobbler plugins. help?

Sure sounds like the plugin is NOT installed. First suggestion is to
review the Last.FM plugin instructions under Pluggins/Audio
Pluggins/Last.FM and follow the instructions for version 6.5.4

Verify your directory structure is correct and that all needed pluggin
files are present. Make sure you have the pluggins checked active and
your username and password are filled in under the SlimServer GUI. If
the section has not showed up, close and restart SlimServer. If No Joy,
try below.

Next was the odd part for me to get it to work, but this fixed it. I
had to close SlimServer, remove power from my SB3, shutdown my PC,
power up the SB3, Boot the PC, start SlimServer, and everything has
been happy since.

If still No Joy, now check again under Server Settings/Internet Radio
to see if the password section has showed up. If yes, fill in your
username and password, exit out, and re-start SlimServer. If no, the
problem is most likely incorrect directory structure or a file that did
not get moved over during the plugin install or was placed in the wrong
sub-directory. Re-review the Plugin instructions and carefully verify
files and directory structure. If sure they are correct, try going
throught the shutdown/startup again.

Once I had all the files and directories correct, it took one boot
cycle for me to get the Username/password Last.FM section. Once I
filled them in and saved them, one more boot cycle had everything up
and running. Several members advised that all I needed to do was close
and restart SlimServer at that point, but that just never helped me. It
certainly can't hurt to try just restarting SlimServer after one has the
User/Password section saved.

Yes, Yes you can. Or you can buy a Logitech Harmony remote and replace
all your remotes. Or you can wait and buy a Duet or just the SBC
(Jive). Or get a backlite remote at:

Re: [slim] Library Scan Very Slow

2008-03-05 Thread iPhone

hal9000;275779 Wrote:
Thanks guys. I'll check out my log and see if there are issues there.
The PC I'm running the server on is a buffed out XPS gaming machine
from last year so that's not the problem...its probably the NAS or a
 network issue.

Sounds like your PC is fine. The slow part is your NAS. That type of
NAS was not made to deal with 4TB of FLAC files during scanning. Just
think of how long it would have taken with SL 6.5.4. The hard part is
over, the scan. It should do all right playing the FLAC music files.
Just because a certain NAS has enough capacity, does not necessarily
make it the correct NAS for Squeezebox file sharing no matter how
powerful the PC running SqueezeCenter is. And it is a sure thing not to
use it as the actual SC server.

I just finished installing SqueezeCenter on my DIY NAS. The rescan took
almost 4 hours to do just under 12,000 CDs (still have 4000 to rip to
FLAC) spanned over 6TB of hard drive space. The NAS has a 3.2 GHz
Pentium 4 with 4 GB of RAM and an LSI Logic SATA 150-6 RAID Card so it
can stand along as the SqueezeCenter server. My NAS has a huge amount
of horsepower. The reasons are two fold. I have an abnormally huge CD
library and I want my NAS to host SqueezeCenter on its own.

Large FLAC libraries have to have an extremely powerful NAS if they are
going to also run as the Server (unless time is not important to you).
Large libraries require a powerful NAS when used for storage only to
handle maintenance/scanning while ending up having excess power when
just playing the music files. What was commercially available (other
then rack mounted huge things, read very expensive) just would not
handle my collection so I went with the DIY NAS. Not including drives,
I stayed under $600 if purchased new (spent less because I had stuff in
the closet).

 I have SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 17793 installed on a Windows Vista
Ultimate system with a firewall opening.

The problem is the receiver only occasionally shows up in the list of
players and when it does show up and I select it, I can choose my
computer as the music source, but before it finishes connecting it
 loses contact with the receiver.

I've tried moving the receiver and when the remote is sitting on top of
the receiver it reports full wireless strength. I've tried powering the
receiver off and on again, but I haven't been able to get it to work
 yet.

Hi Brad,
Congats on the Duet and welcome to the Forum. First thing to try is
turn the Firewall completely off to eliminate that possible issue. Good
to see you have the Gold release of SC. Next, please give the Forum all
the details you can. What PC is running Vista, exact version of Vista,
Network components, etc. Is the Receiver on Ethernet or Wireless? The
more info the Forum has the less back and forth with questioning you to
death. Once all the info is posted, one of the experts is bound to see
the issue immediately.

The price of small UPSs is so cheap now you should get one instead of
buying another cheap surge protector.

What has probably happened is that the cheapo surge protector uses MOVs
to shunt the surges. MOVs breakdown a little each time they are called
to protect equipment and go bad after X number of hits. With all the
power issues it appears that your home gets, you are much better off
with a small UPS. The UPS will have better surge protection and the
reboots will go away because the SB2 will stay powered through hits and
outages.

Additionally the UPS is a small price to pay to protect your Heart,
Hearing, Speakers, and SB2!

My advice, DO NOT CUT YOUR POWER CORD!

Be smart and either drill a new bigger hole in the back by drilling two
holes large enough side by side and knock out the middle between the
holes or just enlarge the current hole.

Why chance creating a future problem by cutting the cord when a little
cabinet modification will get the job done. As long as it is on the
back, nobody is going to see your handy work anyway.

this but in both cases digital outputs are used hence both devices
 using the same (receiver) DAC.

Since everything is digital up until the Receiver, why does the
original CD have more 'body' and a little more detail?

 Frank

The one thing that I believe nobody has addressed yet is how are you
controlling volume? When doing a side by side versus a CD player, IMO,
the volume on the SD product should be at maximum and the when using
the digital out try the fixed setting. The CD player does not suffer
from resolution loss caused by the volume setting section in the SD
product. Any side by side test needs to account for this, so volume at
Max on the SD product to eliminate any resolution loss.

 Short answer - No.

Haunyack,
You and I have seen eye to eye on most things. I think this needs some
re-think on your part. This has nothing to do with Logitech!

You should not have sold and/or shipped the SB3 until you had all the
parts in your possession. The other solution would have been to send
your buyer your remote and you wait for the one ordered from Logitech.
After all this is a parts order and everybody knows that parts orders
are not expedited the same as orders for main units.

Again I do not see why Logitech should even be part of this issue, much
less taking any heat or blame. Prior poor planning or faulty logic on
your part does not equate to bad or poor customer service from
Logitech.

Just out of curiosity, how many can people play synced? I was trying
to use 4 players synced the other day, and it would often rebuffer. 3
worked fine, 4, not so much. Not sure if it has anything to do with
the one where the wireless doesn't reach so well. All playing MP3's,
so bandwidth shouldn't be a huge problem.

 Eric

I have all of mine synced up at one time without issue since SC 7.1. It
get the personal feeling that before bandwidth becomes a problem, the
server horsepower becomes a problem. Is it an older PC running SC with
a bunch of other things going on? Is it a lower end under powered NAS
trying to do the job? Or is it a newer dedicated Server or PC running
SC alone? I feel all of this matters. And how good is your wireless
network and the signal at each location. In my opinion, all of these
things matter and play a large part. Each issue has to be resolved
before a large synced system works well. Some folks will only need to
find one problem, others will have multiple problems, and still other
will have no issues at all. Each home and installation is different.
That is why there really is no reason for Logitech to make this
Plug'N'Play in my opinion.

Thanks for the replies guys, they've certainly given me something to
think about. A few friends have decent AV setups and wooden floors

I'm obviously concerned about changes in my own room. The sound is
important to me but so is the decor of the room and tbh, maybe it will
be a challenge but a worthwhile one! I will be visiting the flooring
retailer when I get back from work in a fortnight and hopefully by then
I will have been able to come to a decision re. the flooring. At
present, I'm swaying towards going for it! Thanks again guys, it
really has been a big help and cheers for the suggestions on flooring
 alternatives and underlay.

Good Luck. One way to look at it might be that even going with
hardwoods there are things one can do to improve/change the sound for
the better even after the hardwoods are in. Adding furniture, rugs, and
textile wall hangings can help when things are to bright or overly
reflective. These items also help to control the bass if it gets out of
hand.

Don't get me wrong, there are still options for you even after you go
with hardwoods. My first suggestion was to see if it was really only
about the sound and now we know it is not. So on to plan B.

I think Mike is right in that this IS a Forum not a used gear site like
EBAY, Audiogon, Craig's List, and all the others.

And maybe more to the point, say it was limited to just Slim Devices

they might ask why their ad was deleted when they have an SB3 for sale
with speakers, a computer, an Amp, tuner, Panasonic direct drive
turntable and so on. But I'm selling an SB3!

Just best to keep that can of worms sealed.

Also Slim Devices has its own web sales site, why would they want to
provide a place for others to compete directly with them while they are
paying for this Forum? I think it is reasonable not to ask them to and
reasonable for them not to allow it.

Re: [slim] Is it o.k. to post SB's for sale here?

Why not be able to offer them to the members here first? I would like
that myself if I was in the market. Even if I wasn't it might be
something I would tell my friends about. I've seen other things
offered here and it hasn't been abusive. I would think this would be
the place to first offer it. Unless of course logitech has made it so.
This is a forum and a forum shares things like the product that they
are about. It would be nice for forum members to get first chance at
some items. Can people even let us know if they have it on ebay? I
think it's a bad rule myself. It might cost you a couple of sales here
and there but it would be more of a nice convenience to the members.

Seems pretty simple to me. Logitech pays for the bandwidth and the
servers this free Forum is on and using. Why would they want a Forum
with a sales or used gear section? Why would they want to be paying to
provide such a place to sell gear when they are in the business of
selling Logitech NMPs?

Its their Forum and they are the ones that make the rules. This is
about the most open Forum I have ever been on. On the iPhone forum if
you say something bad about Apple, they delete your post!

There are lots of places to buy and sell used Slim units. If one is
looking for a deal, I suggest using EBAY by saving a daily search to
look for the model that one wants. The search can be sent daily to your
E-mail or phone everyday. Or checking Audiogon daily. If one is selling,
posting on the same sites seems to make sense.

Makes sense to me, but since I am not selling or going to be selling
any of my Squeezeboxes anytime soon maybe I just don't get it. But then
again, when and if I sell a used Squeezebox, it will be on Audiogon or
EBAY depending on the condition it is in.
