Our latest release looks like it's 4.1.0.0 beta, do you think I should
just remove the beta decoration and release it as 4.1.0.0?

Re: [DQSD-Users] Still struggling with colors on Win 7

Hi Michael,

 Thanks for the hint, Kim; I tried a complete reinstall, applying the win7
 theme patch before instancing the search bar, and now at least I have
 consistent results on both machines. The bar doesn't match my taskbar color
 but at least it is homogenous (see attached).

 you probably need to dive into the CSS and adapt them to go better with
 the system look.

 What puzzles me is that other people (e.g. James Nix on Win 7 64-bit) seem
 to get a transparent search bar that lets their Win 7 theme colors show
 through.

I seem to recall the themes were designed not to be transparent, but
to have the same color as the various themes (there's one Olive, one
Silver and one XP blue, for example). Maybe James system color happens
to match the DQSD theme color?

 I could perhaps tweak the search bar color to match the taskbar
 color but (1) the taskbar is sort of a gradient fill rather than a uniform
 color, (2) if I changed my windows theme of course the search bar would no
 longer match, and (3) I haven't found, in my various poking, how to do that!

Again, I don't know enough CSS to style my way out of a double-door,
so I don't think I can help :)

Hi George,

On my Windows Vista with DQSD 4.1.0.0, typing

  imdb harry potter and the sorcerer's stone

in my DQSD bar takes me straight to this page:

Could you check the modification date of your imdb.xml in \Program

2008? There was a fix around that time, and I want to make sure you
have it.

Judging from your screenshot, it looks like a mix of the Vista and XP
Blue themes.

I can't speak for the themes implementation, I don't know it well
enough, but if the default themes don't match your Windows coloring,
you probably need to dive into the CSS and adapt them to go better

Re: [DQSD-Users] RESEND: New Windows 7 RTM DQSD Theme is HERE!

2009-10-07 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi Matt,

Thanks so much for your effort in troubleshooting Windows 7
installation, and not least for building the theme (it looks great!).

I think we should release again soon, and I'd like the theme to be
part of that release. We also need to look into better installation
instructions for x64 platforms, and maybe provide a little official
hook to allow people to launch the 32-bit IE on 64-bit systems. The
workaround seems good.

Give me a little time to catch up, and I'll see if I can build a new
release from what we have.

 Fellow DQSD Users…

 Like most of you, I’ve been running DQSD for many years and cannot live
 without it!  It’s one of the very first things I install on my Windows
 taskbar.  I finally got it to work flawlessly on my new Windows 7 x64 (RTM)
 machine and it behaves and looks great IMO!  I developed the Vista theme
 (.css) (with Kim/Charlie) several years ago and now I’ve finished the
 Windows 7 Theme.  It looks like part of the Windows 7 OS…very clean and auto
 adjusts to whatever “Window Color” (The transparent bar color) that you
 choose using the Personalization Control Panel.  Accordingly, multiple
 themes (i.e. XP’s DQSD) aren’t really necessary.  Please see attached
 samples.

 This theme OVERWRITES your current theme.css and is more of a hack than
 using the traditional theme selection---yes, I was lazy this time. ;)  Feel
 free to adapt it or make it better and resubmit to the list.

 If the attachments in this post aren’t available in your reader, they are
 here also:

  http://vysa.net/dqsd.zip

 Hopefully, Charlie or Kim will put this on the main page soon!

 It’s important to note that this theme is only for Windows 7 running in
 “Smaller 100% DPI” mode and not the default 125% DPI…call me old fashion!
 ;)  See Remarks inside theme.css file for more details.

 Hope you like it and continue to use this awesome search tool on Windows 7
 RTM!

 Special thanks to Maud Dib for helping me get it to work properly on Windows
 7 x64 using IE8 32-bit browser instead of 64-bit browser.

 Not directly, but there are other whois sources. Like whsc. Try this:

 The other one you can use is whi (WebHosting.info). I can't remember

 I like whi because it also provides a very large database of domain-IP

 The problem in Windows (at least in this instance) is that it's not
 necessarily a simple shell call. A POST usually has to be made to the
 server (which requires additional HTTP headers that can't be passed on a
 command line), which means the application being pushed has to interact
 temporarily with DQSD.

There's a launch mode -- can't remember the name or number -- that
writes out a temporary .html page, and then launches it via the shell.

That's a pretty simple way of handling these kinds of things. I'd like
to make it possible to configure which browser .exe the user wants to
use, in association with the temporary-page launch, but I haven't
figured it out just yet.

There's also the problem with IE's security features; depending on
where from a page is launched, it may get the lockdown restrictions,
and the browser will run in a cramped mode.

James,

Nice, thanks!

One thing that stands out to me is the need to Unblock the entire
archive, which presumably goes through the contents of the .zip and
unblocks every single file.

If only we could package this as an installer instead, that problem
would go away. Problem is, we don't have any experience with free
installer packages that support 64-bit Windows.

 Well, good news and bad news.

 The good news is I have it working.

 The bad news is it can be difficult to remove if the installation screws up

 The steps I came up with avoid some Windows 7 security checks without
 disabling them altogether. I will list the general steps, not every Windows
 UAC Confirm this step message.  Note that I use TweakUAC to suppress most
 of them anyway.

 1) Download the dqsdx64-4100-beta.zip package to a location you will
 remember. :-)

 2) Right click the dqsdx64-4100-beta.zip package and select Properties.  At
 the bottom of the dialog there may be a message

 Security: This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help
 protect this computer

 Click the Unblock button.  Click Apply then close the Properties dialog.

 3)  Repeat Step 2 above and VERIFY THAT THERE IS NO SECURITY MESSAGE

 4)  Create  a temporary folder for easy Command Window access - I used
 C:\Temp.  Unzip the dqsdx64-4100-beta.zip file (keeping folder names) into
 C:\Temp.

 5)  Navigate to  C:\Temp\DQSDx64.  Check a couple of .JS files and verify
 that the files do not have the Security message in their Properties (see
 step 2).

 6)  Create a new desktop shortcut - Target: CMD.EXE ; Name Command Window

 7) CREATE A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT.  IF THE INSTALLATION SCREWS UP THE DQSD
 CLOCK SCRIPT ERROR WILL MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO REMOVE DQSD. THE EASIEST FIX
 IT IS TO DO A SYSTEM RESTORE.

 8) Right click the Command Window shortcut created in step 6 and click Run
 as Administrator

 9)  In the command window navigate to the installation folder
 C:\Temp\DQSDx64 (or where the Unzipped files are).

 10) Type SETUPX64.CMD - follow the prompts.

 11)  When install is complete, with no errors (Hope!)  you will have to
 right click the taskbar and select Toolbars twice before Quick Search
 appears.

 NOTES:  There is no entry in Programs and Features to remove/uninstall
 DQSDx64.  I could not find one in the install folder either.  Also, once you
 have  turned the toolbar on by right clicking the  TaskbarToolbars any
 attempt to turn it off causes Explorer to restart with DQSD still there.
 Additionally if the installation has javascript errors in the CLOCK.JS (?)
 for whatever reason, it is virtually impossible to delete the install folder
 in order to start over/reinstall, even when booting to SAFE MODE.  That is
 the why the RESTORE POINT above is important.  If the install fails - you
 can restore your system.   Should an error crop up in the future, the only
 thing I can think of off-hand is to boot to a command prompt an delete the
 installation folder manually.

 Whew I hope I got all that right!

 I can sometimes get DQSD to run after a fresh install but eventually
 it will not load giving the initial error that I posted.  That error
 is followed by three or four others.  DQSD will still be present in

Hmm. I can't really tell what's wrong, but if you could check the

First, I'd check the registry, to see what DQSDTools.Launcher points to:
1) Open regedit
2) Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/DQSDTools.Launcher and open its CLSID sub-key
3) The default value should be '{FA8211C1-F85B-4CCD-8C51-1587A37E566A}'

 Hey,

 I was thinking that if I came across http://www.dqsd.net/ for the
 first time now I would not even try to install it.  The site needs to
 be cleaned up.

 E.g. currently it says for the Installation Instructions that you need
 to be using IE 5.5 or newer...and to 'Please let us know if it works
 on various other configurations.' Though further down it says as of
 version 2.5.0, thanks to Koen Mannaerts code contribution, you should
 now be able to launch Netscape, Opera, or other non-IE browsers using
 the deskbar.

 Another small e.g., the first item in the faq
 http://www.dqsd.net/faq.htm says:
 Can I assign a hotkey to it so I don't need to mouse to it?
 This feature was added in version 3.0.
 What use is that? :-)

 I love DQSD and want it to remain vibrant. I think we been doing
 ourselves no favours with the website the last number of years and
 should think about redoing it. What do others think?

Re: [DQSD-Users] Adjust Clock Font

Hi Bill,

The clock is governed by the CSS class clock in search.css. Here are
the relevant portions:

.txtfld, .clock
{
 font : menu;
 background-color: window;
 color: windowtext;
 border-style: inset;
 border-width:1px;
 padding-top:2px;
 padding-left:2px;
 padding-right:2px;
 padding-bottom:3px;
 margin:0px;
 position:absolute;
 overflow:hidden;
 word-break:break-all;
}
.clock
{
 background-color: menu;
 color: windowtext;
 cursor:hand;
 text-align:right;
}
--

You should be able to set the font size, by adding something like:

.clock
{
  font-size:15px;
}

to your localsearch.css, but I don't know CSS well enough to say that
that's the final truth.

The idea, anyway, is that you overload whatever class you want to
change in localsearch.css -- the specifics of what you want to do
should be CSS mechanics.

Good luck,
- Kim

Crashes feel bad, but they can be caused by some minor glitch.

 Ok, I managed to install from the cmd console, but not without some
 hassles. The main problem was trying to do this install without full
 admin privileges. Once that had been sorted away (and ignoring all
 the MS threats) the install went smoothly. However, upon reboot I
 lost all keyboard and mouse input (they were wireless). I tried
 replacing them with wired components to no avail. A hard shutdown was
 done, and of course the 'not a proper shutdown' screen appeared upon
 startup but after that all appears to be fine.

 DQSD looks good blending into the Aero taskbar nicely. Now once I
 have transferred over my personal settings from the old drive I will
 be a very happy camper.

 Thanks for your patience and help, Kim

 This appears to be a simple timing issue -- the scripts load in a

 first used.

 I should be able to fix this pretty easily, thanks for the report.

2009-01-09 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi James,

As it happens, we just bought a new laptop for Christmas, and it came
with Vista. I just managed to install DQSD for tinkering...

I've tried these steps, and I got the same results, but ONLY when
running with launchmode = 0, so it doesn't match your settings,
strangely enough.

I also get the AppDataDirectory error that Michael mentions after I
change to launchmode=0, but it shows immediately when I restart the
bar. Weird.

I'll see if I can find some time to follow up on these issues during
the weekend. Thanks for your reports.

 With Protected Mode ON in Internet Options Security tab.

 1) DQSD entry test search 1 creates PM Google Window 1 with search field

 7) DQSD entry test search 3 creates PM Google New Tab Window in Window 1

 Hi Michael,

 Thanks for that tidbit, I guess that makes sense. DQSD's taskbar
 instance of IE can't run in protected mode, so any window it launches
 will probably inherit the non-protectedness.

 I don't know of a way to force IE into protected mode -- even if it's
 launched via double-click on a .html file, it gets Protected Mode:
 Off, presumably because a local file is considered safer.

 Maybe if there is a way to configure which sites require Protected
 Mode, you can add DQSD's %PROGRAMFILES%\Quick Search
 Deskbar\search.htm or the launch path used for the launchMode where we
 write out a .html file to your temp dir.

 Just some random thoughts,

 I have the cause/effect but can't explain why/what.

 Brief Update of Symptom: DQSD entered specific addresses (i.e.
 www.newegg.com) opens additional blank page for each entry.

 Currently using:

 Vista Home Premium 32 Bit SP1 with IE7 in Tabbed Mode.
 Dqsd-400-rc3

 Problem Cause/Solution: IE7 was running with Protected Mode enabled.
 Disabling Protected Mode caused DQSD to behave
 as expected when localprefs.js set to:

 *
 *  0=new window always [default]
 *  1=single window for all
 * 2=single window for each search type
 */
 reuseBrowserWindowMode = 0;

 Note that I had tried disabling all IE7 add-ons as well as various
 spyware/adware tools (AVG Free Edition, Spybot Resident Shiels and
 Tea=timer) with no luck.

 Seems like DQSD did not behave this way when I first upgraded to Vista
 Sp1.
 Maybe a new Vista IE7 security patch?

 Has no one else noticed this? I mean I like feeling special but

I definitely agree it's a problem with DQSD, I just think both

 Seems to me that if DQSD can launch a Protected Mode Google or Alta Vista

 Well, there are only six possibilities from launchmode = 0/1 and

 extra blank window.

 However when setting launchmode to 0 I get this error from search.htm:

Re: [DQSD-Users] Addons

2008-07-22 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi guys,

I wonder if addons are simply searches that require additional files,
beyond the .xml spec? It seems so, looking at the existing ones. Other
than that, I don't see how being an addon would allow greater reach
than a search, except perhaps by convention.

I think that's it, anyway: an addon is a search with additional
stuff, be it COM components (timesync), a group of related searches
(genealogy), web service wrappers (googlespell), that won't fit in a
single xml file.

Thanks for the usage statistics :)

Re: [DQSD-Users] Solution: Searches stall on DQSDLaunch.html with FireFox + TorButton

2008-07-01 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi Dave,

Thanks for the report!

- Kim

On Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 01:18, arb0real [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Hi all,

 Just in case anyone else has this problem in future, here's a solution.

 Problem:
 DQSD does not open a search properly in FireFox. The new browser window/tab
 opens OK, but it then stalls on a blank page.

 Cause:
 The TorButton extension blocks file:// URLs by default.

 Solution:
 Tools - Add-ons - TorButton - Options - Security Settings - Untick
 Block access to network from file:// URLs (recommended) - OK

 More details of the problem:
 - The stalled windows has something like the following in the address bar:
 file:///C:/DOCUME~1/USERNAME/LOCALS~1/Temp/DQSDLaunch.html.
 - Functions that do not involve a web search work fine (e.g. if you have
 Notepad aliased to np, then typing np will fire Notepad correctly).
 - A parameterless search works OK (e.g. entering gg gives you the Google
 homepage, but entering gg foobar gives the stalled webpage).
 - Opening the spawned DQSDLaunch.html file shows that it is created correctly
 - it's just not run as expected.
 - The FireFox error console reports (something like) Error: uncaught
 exception: [Exception... Component returned failure code: 0x805e000a
 [nsIDOMHTMLFormElement.submit]  nsresult: 0x805e000a (unknown)
 location: JS frame ::
 file:///C:/DOCUME~1/USERNAME/LOCALS~1/Temp/DQSDLaunch.html :: onload :: line
 1  data: no]

 More details of the solution:
 - The error console report led me to
 https://bugs.torproject.org/flyspray/index.php?do=detailsid=698 which
 mentions the TorButton behaviour with file:// URLs
 - As the comment on that post mentions, you enable access at your own risk.
 - I thought the problem might be DDE, but changing/disabling DDE had no
 effect and I can confirm that the solution works with the default FireFox DDE
 settings that you get by running firefox.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser -
 i.e.
   Use DDE: Enabled
   DDE Message: %1,,0,0
   Application: Firefox
   DDE Application: [blank]
   Topic: WWW_OpenURL
 - I thought the problem might be NoScript, but I already had file://
 whitelisted.

 Cheers,

 Dave.

 Neither of these two stylesheets were included within the 4.0.0.5

  All of the Royale themes seem to be missing the bottom colored border

 While the files to create the multiline effect were not included within

 the multiline effect. I don't have access to a machine that has these
 desktop themes, so I can't replicate the layouts without a screenshot of
 the taskbar or something. It's a very simple process, but without the
 image, I can't do it. Anyone wanting to submit screenshots to me can do

Maybe that's what I was saying, but it wasn't what I meant :)

I meant I found no way of actually moving the deskbar around /within/
the taskbar. It would just resize horizontally, even if the mouse
pointer turned into a move cross.

I did manage to drag it out of the taskbar entirely, that seemed to
work as it always did.

There's been only one single change to the deskband code, and it deals
with the minimum size of the deskband--maybe that has something to do
with it. I know we made it in response to a user bug report, but maybe
we broke this scenario.

Bob, would you be willing to test a non-official build with the old

We're about to drop a major release, so maybe it makes sense to change
this now, rather than breaking people's custom color schemes in the

 On a related note, someone (Kim?) said something about auto-detecting
 the users' current Windows color scheme during installation, and setting
 the default style to that. Any progress?

I think that's already done--I think it was Monty who made the
installer changes that spy on the relevant registry keys, and apply
the corresponding color scheme. It doesn't work for me, though,
because I install as one user (with default, blue scheme) and run as
another (with Classic theme).

 the search bar is only about half width. For example, with the blue

 border. In the above described configuration, I see only top of the
 border and what appears to be about half of the white input field. I
 also see only the upper part of the magnifying glass at the left end
 of the search bar. The search bar still works. It just looks odd.

 If I make the task bar single width so that the search bar and
 program buttons are next to each other horizontally, the search bar
 in various color schemes looks the way I think it's intended to look.

 This is just an observation. I'm perfectly happy using the classic
 color scheme which doesn't suffer this minor visual effect.

That could well be... But would the Google toolbar change the DDE
setup for .html?

I don't understand why the search toolbar changes the behavior of the

I'm not intimately familiar with DDE, so the details evade me, but I

 I would be its the DDE setup for html files. This would explain why it was
 an IE error window I was getting when FF was the default browser, windows is
 passing off the WWW_OpenURL topic via DDE to any apps registered for the
 .html files (in my case systernals process explorer showed MS word getting a
 hit and also free download manager).

 So my guess is its DDE related (used to do a fair bit of DDE stuff back in
 the day). I guess the way to test it would be to go into the file
 associations and disable DDE for html files, I may try that tomorrow.

 Just my 2cents.

Thanks for the info!

I meant to say earlier that I routinely get DQSD script errors with

 So the popup window prompting for the AdBlock sub seems related to kicking

Yep, that vibes with my experiences. This is not pretty, in my
opinion, but no big deal either.

 So now that i had AdBlock Runing and was error free I reinstalled google
 toolbar, and now when I launch a DQSD search every time if FF is closed I
 get the script error again.

This, on the other hand, is more disturbing. Maybe Google are doing
something wrong :)

Just to make sure I understand -- you get the script error whenever a
new instance of FF is launched, right? When you say every time FF is
closed, you mean the script error occurs the next time you launch a
search using DQSD? Or literally when FF is closed?

Thanks,

Re: [DQSD-Users] Installed 4.0 RC3, but Add Quick Search does not appear on the list of toolbars to install

Hi Phil,

I'm guessing you would have spotted this, so there's probably
something else afoot, but the item is no longer Add Quick Search...
but now just DQSD Deskbar in 4.0.

I think it actually is in the registry, though it's a little bit
obscured. The DQSD Host registers as part of the DeskBand category. At
startup, Explorer spins through the registry looking for all classes
that implement the DeskBand category, and adds them to the menu.

I know sometimes, with DQSD 3, you had to reboot for the menu item to
show up. Or at least wait a little while, it took something like 10
seconds before it was detected.

 Thanks for the detailed info! What we've seen is, when

 sometimes the DQSDTools.dll doesn't get properly

 and we're not sure why.

 The 3.1.9.2 DQSDTools keyboard handling conflicts with
 the new, improved,
 Vista-friendly (I hope) 4.0 keyboard handling, so it
 would appear not to
 work.

 If you feel up for it, it would be great if you could
 try uninstalling
 again, and then force-fully removing DQSDTools.dll (it
 will probably still
 be there and locked after uninstall, but you can
 rename it and reboot, and
 it should no longer be loaded by Explorer).

 Then install the 4.0 RC and see what happens.

 Before going through that, you could use Process
 Explorer [1] to see which
 DQSDTools.dll is loaded (Find - Find Handle or
 DLL..., and search for
 DQSDTools.dll), check where the path points and check
 the version of the
 loaded DLL (Right-click, Properties, Version tab.) It
 should be 4.0.0.3 or

 Hope that helps,

 misunderstood about DQSD's ability to perform calculations in a normal
 manner. What a shame, and waiting for google to run the calc and
 return it
 is a pill too. Is there no way to set DQSD to preform normal arithmetic
 functions?

 I'll admit I am lost on the way this is functioning, but to me the end
 result is it works for some math and others it doesn't and therefore
 cant be
 trusted. Perhaps on the functions list it should be made clear that
 this is
 not doing standard arithmetic but binary. Or maybe I'm the only person
 out
 here who looks at this and goes What?!?!?!?!.
Yeah, when I first learned about this, I was flabbergasted. Now, I just
don't care so much.

I hope you realize that this is not a conscious choice on the behalf of
the DQSD developers -- we just delegate any math operations to
JavaScript, which -- like most other compilers/interpreters -- uses IEEE
754 floating point arithmetics. It *is* normal.

That said, what you're seeing sounds really weird. The fact that so
widely different numbers yield the same result is strange... I can't
explain it.

Hi Richard,

 Uhhh that doesnt sound right to me. I subtracted 3 different values
 from another value and got the same result twice.

Oops, I didn't see your results were identical for the first two cases.
I tried it here;

2156737.51 - 16123.81 = 2140613.67
2156737.51 - 16123.83 = 2140613.679997 -- Note: .6_7_999...
2156737.51 - 16123.82 = 2140613.69

Could you try it again to make sure you transcribed the values correctly?

 Also two of the results are flat out wrong.

Right, but they're pretty close to correct, which is what you get with
floating-point, if I understand things correctly.

 I could understand if I had used some kind of hokey notation but its
 a straight up math problem X-Y. When performed in a calculator
 application I dont get that result?

The calculator (at least the one in Windows) probably doesn't use
floating-point to store its numbers, but again, I'm a bit out of my
depth here.

Yep, works fine here as well on the same setup.

There were problems with the keyboard accelerators if the pre-4.0 DLL

Yeah, this is where we have some problem, and I'm not sure we can help
it. I think closing the toolbar does not automatically unload the DLL
for a variety of reasons and I'm not sure there's a documented way to
force it.

For some reason, the uninstall/install combo does not properly update
the DQSDTools.dll, presumably because it's still locked by explorer.exe.

As far as I know, the only safe way to make it work is to reboot after
uninstalling DQSD, which should force the DLL to be writable.

Sorry about the hassle,

Try ditching the registry hacks now as well, that should definitely not
be necessary.

It seems the problem is that the old DQSD isn't properly unloaded, and
enters into some kind of conflict with the new one -- my guess is that
you were actually seeing DQSD 3.1.9.2 in your taskbar when you got the
security warning.

I'm on the road so I won't be replying regularly, but I thought I'd post

Re: [DQSD-Users] RC2 and Avant + backspace key issues

2007-01-13 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi Steven,

 1 - Using Avant browser - Since version 38 Avant does a
 LOCKDOWN key change and does not allow you to switch it off.
 If you delete the key it puts itself back in . It's broken my
 office start page which uses active desktop. Of course it
 effects DQSD because any search launched from DQSD calls
 Avant and boom the system locks up.

Is this with one of the DQSD 4.0 RCs, or with 3.1.9.2?

 2- installed DQSD RC2 but I can't use my backspace key to
 delete entries in the search bar. Pressing backspace has no
 effect. I think I mentioned this during the Beta. Is this just me?

If keyboard accelerators stop working, it's usually because DQSD 3.1.9.2 is
still running and has a keyboard hook that gets in the way of the normal
keyboard handling.

If you can, try uninstalling DQSD 4.0, reboot and re-install it from
scratch.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista RC1 error message with DQSD 4.0 rc2

2007-01-10 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi David,

 When searching for a regular search term, I get the following
 message in an Internet Explorer Script Error window:

Is this when using the default Google search, or for some specific search?

I used to get this on XP, but I got rid of it somehow. I see in my
localprefs.js that I have

  // useExternalBrowser = true;

i.e. it is commented out, and using the default.

Do you have a custom setting for useExternalBrowser? I have a vague feeling
that that's what fixed it for me.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista

2006-12-18 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi Charlie,

 Yes, my localsearch was empty before I started. The one thing
 that simply would NOT change in theme.css was the on the
 button. It stayed doggedly black, which doesn't work on a
 very dark grey background.

Weird... I'll try and figure something out, but as I said, CSS isn't my
forte.

 I'll play around a bit more in a couple of days, when I have
 some time, and maybe I can get it all back to where it is
 done in theme.css. If I can figure out what is going on with
 the chevrons. I agree, that would be best. Then we simply
 ship the theme_vista.css plus the two bmp files, and folks
 can manually copy the theme_vista.css to theme.css and be done.

Exactly!

Thanks,
- Kim

Hi Charlie,

 I wonder if there's a decent online reference for

Here's the actual spec: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/ -- excruciating.
W3Schools: http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp -- usually short and
sweet, but low on basic ideas

FWIW, I removed everything from localsearch.css and copied the *button

chevron, at least.

Maybe it's a Vista thing?

Hi Charlie,

 OK, I've figured out the screenshot, and created a new css -
 how do I tell DQSD to recognize the new CSS?

I think the idea was to name the CSS of your choice 'theme.css', and restart
DQSD -- it should pick it up as-is.

You may want to keep the empty theme.css around, as I believe it constitutes
the Classic theme.

Re: [DQSD-Users] respect comma and period localization

2006-12-05 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi Stephen,

 But i have a small issue. Here in Denmark where i live we
 dont use the . (dot) as decimal marker, rather we use the , (comma).

 In most programs this switch is seamless, but in some
 including DQSD, we have to use the wrong way to write a number:

 On my system this is wrong:
 29.55

 on my system this is right:
 29,55

 Now my question.
 Is there anyway that i can configure this to work right in DQSD?
 Is there anyway that someone can make the installer detect
 this localization?

It's the same here in Sweden.

You see, what you're entering into the search bar (provided you mean when
you use it as a calculator) is actually JavaScript code.

If you type:

 25 + 9 / 3 * 3.14

the search bar responds with

 34.42

As this is just a JavaScript expression and JavaScript always expresses
floating point numbers in a locale-invariant manner, there's no built-in
facility for localized numerics.

Then again, I guess we could preprocess every numeric expression replacing
decimal separator of your choice with . before evaluating the
expression.

To me it just seems counter-intuitive, but maybe that's because I know what
it does, so I expect the locale-invariant behavior.

 and a couple of weeks ago they ran a piece on search engine
 toolbars, and followed it up last week with a bit more. I've
 emailed them saying how wonderful DQSD is and how it doesn't
 try to hijack any browser features, has hundreds of built-in
 searches, and is this amazing tiny little box on my task bar
 etc. etc., but if anybody else would like to add more support
 to try and get them to mention DQSD on the show then their
 email address is: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or just use the Contact

 Saying that your an avid viewer of the show from (whichever
 country) via the BBC News Player (click on the link on the
 right of the program homepage, above) might also help a bit :)

When I removed all the aliases, I saved the original set in a file called

You can use numeric entities instead, which are accepted by the XML

They would be something like #; where is the unknown number.

See if you can find a site that lists a translation table, perhaps?

As I understand it, IE7 beta 2 seems to have broken support for deskbands in

The bug has been reported to MS, so we're hoping that they will sort it out

 officially broken.

Thanks for the heads-up. Sorry to hear the search is irreparable, but I'll

it.

 Let me say this about IE 7 Beta... Microsoft will probably
 fix the problem so we at DQSD should probably hold off until they do.

 I say this because even their own taskbar toolbar for Windows
 Media Player is broken as well as the taskbar toolbar for iTunes.

RE: [DQSD-Users] COMX.XML - missing Joy of Tech User Friendly (again)

2006-03-26 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hey Monty,

 This version also contains a change to open a new window
 directly without using an html file.

I'm no regular comx user, but I tried it out to see if it worked even in
non-admin scenarios (not sure why it wouldn't).
Anyway, it seems to work fine, at least for Calvin and Hobbes...

Nice job!

RE: [DQSD-Users] IE 7 Beta

2006-03-26 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi John,

 I am willing to help debug it. Any ideas where to start with
 it? I am behind in reading for my class, so I may be
 in-and-out with my time to work on this. But let me know
 where you think I should start.

Not sure, actually...

From what you said, it seemed that you only get a blank deskband? That is,
you see the little chevron or whatever it's called -- the vertical thin bar
that you can move. That sounds like bad news.

DQSD without attempts at a custom host uses the Microsoft BrowserBand for
hosting, so that must be registered. Do you have a key at:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{7BA4C742-9E81-11CF-99D3-00AA004AE837}

?

I'm thinking maybe they retired it in IE7 :-/

If it's there, I'm not sure what's wrong...

RE: [DQSD-Users] New searches and a problem with the search wizard

2006-02-10 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi Shawn,

 New Searches
 * allpod - AllPodcasts Podcast promotional engine (Shawn K. Hall)
 [...]

I've added those to CVS, thanks! So, does this make us almost ready to
release?

 Which leads me to... The search wizard seems to have an issue
 with some sites where it will append garbage to the action
 url, and instead of collecting the actual target from the
 site it uses the current page name with three high-bit
 characters after it. It looks almost like it might be a UTF-8
 BOM marker, but I admit I didn't look into it very hard.

It'd be great if you could find a site where this repros consistently. Or is
it easy to repro on any URL?

 Is anyone familiar with YubNub ( http://www.yubnub.org/ )? It
 looks like they're a reincarnation of DQSD for the web

Yep, I've seen it, and then forgotten about it, since it's not in my taskbar
:-)
