Re: [DQSD-Users] HELP!!

Hi Lynn,

It's been years since I used DQSD myself, but it uses Internet
Explorer to do most of its magic. What version of Internet Explorer do
you have? I'm worried that DQSD might not work with newer IE releases.

I've given up on IE and subsequently on DQSD, I haven't used it for a

If someone can find and solve the problem, I can try and get the fix
in and build a new release, but I don't have time or inclination to

Re: [DQSD-Users] escape separator in *aliases.txt?

2012-06-27 Thread Kim Gräsman
As an explanation, if not consolation -- we haven't found a way to build a
64-bit installer using our current installer system, and haven't found any
alternative installer systems that make it any easier.

However, I just recently got a new 64-bit Windows 7 laptop for work, and
I'm starting to miss DQSD, so maybe I'll be more personally motivated to
pursue this...

I took a look at the source and found readTabDelimitedFile in tools.js.

It turns out aliases can be either pipe-delimited or tab-delimited,
but the function considers them interchangeable so you can mix pipes
and tabs in the same file, and I don't see a way of escaping.

That's annoying... Could you file a bug for it, and I'll try and fix
it up when I have some time?

Thanks,

I found just enough time to fix this.

Use the httpinst command in DQSD to update your alm search from the
latest revision:

  httpinst /up alm

Let me know if there are any problems. I changed the args to match the
site's new search options.

Hope that helps,

I guess the AllMusic site changed and nobody has taken the time to
adapt the search...

I quickly checked allmusic.com, and the search form looks simple, so
it shouldn't take much work.

Let me see if I can get this fixed. I wish I could offer a new release
soon, but I've run into some problems with the tools we use to build
DQSD, so I can't say when. I'll post a link to a new search if I
manage to get it working.

Hmm... I'm trying to understand what might go wrong.

Here's the check from the wizard's installer:

  IfFileExists $INSTDIR\search.htm Installed
SetAutoClose true
MessageBox MB_OK|MB_ICONEXCLAMATION "Unable to find installation
of Dave's Quick Search Deskbar.$\n$\nPlease install the latest version
of Dave's Quick Search Deskbar."
Quit

 Installed:
... do installation here...

IfFileExists checks if the file is on disk, and if so, sets the
Installed flag. Otherwise it drops down to the body of the check,
which shows a message and aborts. A little backward...

This forum discussion:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=340698

hints that Windows 7 filesystem redirection might cause trouble, but
I'm not sure what the workaround is. It's hard to tell without knowing
the value of $INSTDIR. Do you get to choose an install directory when
you start the installer?

I can't seem to build the wizard, I don't think I have the right build
tools installed anymore, so it's hard for me to debug.

Yes...

> 1)  Does that support include x64 versions of XP, Vista and Windows 7?

I think so. I've had some reports that the 32-bit version works on
Windows 7, at least, and I don't know why the 64-bit would be
different.

> 2)  If I instruct people to download the installation executable (the EXE

No. The 64-bit installation must always be done with the ZIP file +
running setupx64.cmd.

If I recall correctly, these are the steps;

1) Download the 64-bit release zip
2) Unpack it to some temporary location
3) Run setupx64.cmd as administrator

The bits should be copied into your 64-bit Program Files, and
everything should be registered.

Hope that helps,

Re: [DQSD-Users] dqsd.net webmaster?

2010-03-02 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi Tom,

I think the most pressing concern is that we seem to have lost control of
dqsd.net -- updates aren't bubbling through as they should, and we don't
know who has access to the host.

- There is a wiki (now defunct, apparently, I can't get to the pages) for
developers at SourceForge. Would a user-facing wiki be valuable?
- Feature requests can be made at SourceForge. I agree it's not as appealing
as the link you posted.

My life is busy with two small children, and I don't have all that much time
to develop DQSD, but I'd love to see it grow, too. :)

If we could get the infrastructural problems sorted, maybe we could
kickstart development again, starting with a proper 4.1 release, and then
look into the various issues we have?

I seem to recall the themes were designed not to be transparent, but
to have the same color as the various themes (there's one Olive, one
Silver and one XP blue, for example). Maybe James system color happens
to match the DQSD theme color?

Re: [DQSD-Users] IMdB issue

2010-03-01 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi George,

On my Windows Vista with DQSD 4.1.0.0, typing

imdb harry potter and the sorcerer's stone

in my DQSD bar takes me straight to this page:
http://www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=harry+potter+and+the+sorcerer's+stone

Could you check the modification date of your imdb.xml in \Program
Files\Quick Search Deskbar\searches, and see if it's around July,
2008? There was a fix around that time, and I want to make sure you
have it.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Still struggling with colors on Win 7

Judging from your screenshot, it looks like a mix of the Vista and XP
Blue themes.

I can't speak for the themes implementation, I don't know it well
enough, but if the default themes don't match your Windows coloring,
you probably need to dive into the CSS and adapt them to go better
with the system look.

I checked it out briefly yesterday, and it looks pretty cool.

I don't think we can commit to a tool that has a 30-day usage
restriction, but it appears the Freeware version is free for use with
restricted functionality. Hopefully it covers everything we need to
do, because it would be nice to have proper and equal installers for
32- and 64-bit.

Re: [DQSD-Users] RESEND: New Windows 7 RTM DQSD Theme is HERE!

2009-10-07 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi Matt,

Thanks so much for your effort in troubleshooting Windows 7
installation, and not least for building the theme (it looks great!).

I think we should release again soon, and I'd like the theme to be
part of that release. We also need to look into better installation
instructions for x64 platforms, and maybe provide a little official
hook to allow people to launch the 32-bit IE on 64-bit systems. The
workaround seems good.

Give me a little time to catch up, and I'll see if I can build a new
release from what we have.

There's a launch mode -- can't remember the name or number -- that
writes out a temporary .html page, and then launches it via the shell.

That's a pretty simple way of handling these kinds of things. I'd like
to make it possible to configure which browser .exe the user wants to
use, in association with the temporary-page launch, but I haven't
figured it out just yet.

There's also the problem with IE's security features; depending on
where from a page is launched, it may get the lockdown restrictions,
and the browser will run in a cramped mode.

2009-05-13 Thread Kim Gräsman
James,

Nice, thanks!

One thing that stands out to me is the need to Unblock the entire
archive, which presumably goes through the contents of the .zip and
unblocks every single file.

If only we could package this as an installer instead, that problem
would go away. Problem is, we don't have any experience with free
installer packages that support 64-bit Windows.

Famous last words. I underestimated the life impact of full-time work
and a toddler.

This specific issue (script error on startup on Vista) I have
committed a fix for, but I have not yet built a new release.

I haven't had the bandwidth to look into the other issues (script
error on launch) in any detail.

Would anyone like me to build a new release off what we have right
now? There are a couple of fixes and some new searches in since last
time.

Hmm. I can't really tell what's wrong, but if you could check the
following, we may be able to figure something out:

First, I'd check the registry, to see what DQSDTools.Launcher points to:
1) Open regedit
2) Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/DQSDTools.Launcher and open its CLSID sub-key
3) The default value should be '{FA8211C1-F85B-4CCD-8C51-1587A37E566A}'
4) Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/{FA8211C1-F85B-4CCD-8C51-1587A37E566A}
and open its InprocServer32 sub-key
5) Check its default value, it should be the path to your local
DQSDTools64.dll -- is it?

Thanks,

You should be able to set the font size, by adding something like:

.clock
{
  font-size:15px;
}

to your localsearch.css, but I don't know CSS well enough to say that
that's the final truth.

The idea, anyway, is that you overload whatever class you want to
change in localsearch.css -- the specifics of what you want to do
should be CSS mechanics.

Good luck,

Crashes feel bad, but they can be caused by some minor glitch.

Let's see if we can debug it at some point, and figure out how bad it really is.

No, you don't want to do that; the setupx64.cmd batch file is the
64-bit version of the 32-bit dqsd-.exe installer. They don't
complement each other, it's either-or.

Sorry to hear about Windows 7. We could look into what's breaking, I

SourceForge didn't have any generic 64-bit available, so we had to
pick AMD-64 to signify that it was a 64-bit build. We've tested it on
Intel, as far as I remember, so it should work.

Try starting up a command window (start -> run... -> cmd) and CD into
your temporary "unpack" dir. Then run setupx64.cmd from there and see
what it outputs.

Hi Bill,

Did you use the dqsdx64-4100-beta.zip from:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=42081&package_id=34145

?

We could've done a better job on documentation, but you're supposed to
unpack that zip to a temp directory, and then run the embedded
setupx64.cmd batch file to install DQSD.

If you've already run the 32-bit installer (dqsd-.exe), please
uninstall that first, and make sure DQSD is no longer in your taskbar,
and then try the instructions above.

Hope that helps,

Of course. I'm not disputing that, I'm trying to get to the bottom of
why there's a difference between our machines, as that may lead us to

This appears to be a simple timing issue -- the scripts load in a
different order on Vista, so the DQSDLauncher isn't created when it's
first used.

Ah, I forgot to mention the other option... With launchmode=1, DQSD
uses a temporary .html file to launch the browser. and that was
started in UPM, and with an infobar warning about ActiveX activity on
the page.

Interestingly, starting URLs from DQSD directly worked without a hitch.

Hi James,

As it happens, we just bought a new laptop for Christmas, and it came
with Vista. I just managed to install DQSD for tinkering...

I've tried these steps, and I got the same results, but ONLY when
running with launchmode = 0, so it doesn't match your settings,
strangely enough.

I also get the AppDataDirectory error that Michael mentions after I
change to launchmode=0, but it shows immediately when I restart the
bar. Weird.

I'll see if I can find some time to follow up on these issues during

Re: [DQSD-Users] Dave's Quick Search Opens extra BLANK PAGE window when web address is entered

2009-01-07 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi James,

Nope, there's a launchmode variable, too, just below
reuseBrowserWindowMode in preferences.js.

You might want to check whether it's overridden in localprefs.js, but
in a default install it should have the value 1.

Thanks,
- Kim

Sounds like another bug on Vista, we should look into it.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Dave's Quick Search Opens extra BLANK PAGE window when web address is entered

2009-01-06 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi James,

Thanks, that's interesting. I can't really see why the regular URL
launch should end up un-protected -- intuitively for me, it should be
the other way around.

You definitely should not have to disable PM. DQSD should run with
system defaults, and PM is a good default.

What's your launchMode?

Thanks,
- Kim

2009-01-06 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi Michael,

Thanks for that tidbit, I guess that makes sense. DQSD's taskbar
instance of IE can't run in protected mode, so any window it launches
will probably inherit the non-protectedness.

I don't know of a way to force IE into protected mode -- even if it's
launched via double-click on a .html file, it gets Protected Mode:
Off, presumably because a local file is considered safer.

Maybe if there is a way to configure which sites require Protected
Mode, you can add DQSD's %PROGRAMFILES%\Quick Search
Deskbar\search.htm or the launch path used for the launchMode where we
write out a .html file to your temp dir.

Just some random thoughts,
- Kim

I guess if you don't care about ever getting them back, you can just
delete any search file you don't use (save for the 'core' ones: gg,
most notably, sorry, I don't have a comprehensive list) from under
searches/

I don't have any definite ideas, but you could try experimenting with
the launchMode in localprefs.js (copy the relevant stuff from
preferences.js, and change values in localprefs.js).

Re: [DQSD-Users] mm broken & dqsd wizard error

2008-09-29 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi Tom,

I just managed to build DQSDSearchWiz from source, and it worked fine
with my experiment with multimap.com:

1) Browse to www.multimap.com
2) Set cursor in the "find a map" input field
3) Click DQSD Search Wizard button

This is IE6, by the way, maybe it's different in newer IEs...

My DQSDSearchWiz should be ver 1.3, but locally built, so maybe not
the same as the released version.

Can you provide some more details?

Thanks,
- Kim

2008-09-29 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi Tom,

Thanks for the report!

I tried to look into the DQSDSearchWiz problem, but apparently it
doesn't even work with a clean 4.1 install. It can't detect that DQSD
is installed, probably because I've changed the location in the
registry for where the install dir is stored.

I'll try and fix this asap, so we can investigate why multimap breaks
the search wiz. Then maybe we can go to 4.1 final?

Re: [DQSD-Users] Updated holidays.us.xml to cover up to 2010

2008-08-26 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi Steve,

Thanks!

I've updated the format of holidays.us.xml to be more compact as well;
you can just list the dates for "floating" holidays under its
respective . I noticed Election Day was missing after 2006, but
maybe that's a retired holiday?

Re: [DQSD-Users] Addons

2008-07-22 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi guys,

I wonder if addons are simply searches that require additional files,
beyond the .xml spec? It seems so, looking at the existing ones. Other
than that, I don't see how being an addon would allow greater reach
than a search, except perhaps by convention.

I think that's it, anyway: an addon is a search with additional
"stuff", be it COM components (timesync), a group of related searches
(genealogy), web service wrappers (googlespell), that won't fit in a
single xml file.

Thanks for the usage statistics :)

If it's the popup stuff causing grief, I'd guess that there's
something in IE trying to prevent popups. Maybe we can configure that

Thanks! I'm waiting for Brian's comx changes as well, and word from

in which case I'll see if I can patch it up.

Maybe that's what I was saying, but it wasn't what I meant :)

I meant I found no way of actually moving the deskbar around /within/
the taskbar. It would just resize horizontally, even if the mouse
pointer turned into a "move cross".

I did manage to drag it out of the taskbar entirely, that seemed to
work as it always did.

There's been only one single change to the deskband code, and it deals
with the minimum size of the deskband--maybe that has something to do
with it. I know we made it in response to a user bug report, but maybe
we broke this scenario.

Bob, would you be willing to test a non-official build with the "old"
code, and see if that works?

Thanks,
- Kim

Hi Bob,

I'm not 100% sure I understand what you mean; I can't move DQSD
4.0.0.4 at all (except out of the taskbar), rather it just resizes. Is
this what you're seeing too?

Eek, I hope this isn't new to SP3... Apparently they removed the
address bar, so maybe something else changed.

[DQSD-Users] DQSD 4.0 released!

2008-05-30 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hello DQSD users!

After a long hiatus, we've finally gotten our act together and
released DQSD 4.0, with support for the new Internet Explorer as of
Windows XP SP2.

There are still a couple of quirks to iron out, but the toolbar should
now load without security warnings.

The dqsd.net website and auto-updates should get the latest before too long.

I remember this vaguely... Rather, I remember that we discussed it,
but I can't recall what we said ;-)

We're about to drop a major release, so maybe it makes sense to change
this now, rather than breaking people's custom color schemes in the
next minor release. I say commit your changes, and we'll play around
with it.

I think that's already done--I think it was Monty who made the
installer changes that spy on the relevant registry keys, and apply
the corresponding color scheme. It doesn't work for me, though,
because I install as one user (with default, blue scheme) and run as
another (with Classic theme).

Ah, I can see why Microsoft would be forced to deprecate this IE-bound
feature. There was no way to have the address bar talk to alternative
browsers, I guess?

Re: [DQSD-Users] Minor Color Scheme Issue

2008-05-18 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi Bob,

Yes, I've seen that too, and I think it's because the XP-style color
themes pad their margins with images to blend into the gradient
taskbar. I don't know if there's a good solution for that, I'm not so
good with CSS...

I think one of the developers looked at the themes at one point
(Shawn?), but I'm not sure if this was addressed?

Added; I took the liberty to rename it "scribd" so as not to pollute

I'll see what I can do. I'm on parental leave at the moment, so
when/if I can get the daughter to sleep, I can steal away some time
for hacking.
Initially I wanted to clean the release up so it REALLY worked on XP
SP 2, it seems the majority of it now works (I think there are
problems with the help window), it's probably better to get it out
before we lose all our users.

Also, this could be made safer via;

  cd /d "%PROGRAMFILES%\Quick Search Deskbar\searches"

cd /d switches drives as part of change-current-directory operation
%PROGRAMFILES% is a place-holder for your Program Files directory,
wherever it may be.
