Guy, Thanks, but don't think that's it.  I installed the new firmware several days ago and the radio worked just fine. Even this morning it was okay. I took a 3 hour break and when I returned the buttons didn't function or function correctly. I've downloaded and installed all firmware 4 times.

Harry, Do you have a recent K3 configuration saved somewhere? If not, try to save the configuration using K3 Utility. Then I would suggest doing an EEINIT followed by a new firmware load and a configuration restore. Read page 65 of the K3 manual before doing an EEINIT so you will know what
