I'm doing the next best thing. I just ordered a 6 Meter transverter (XV-50)
from Elecraft. I'm going to be building a Moxon antenna and turn it with a
TV rotor. It will not be a powerhouse, but should get me in some openings.

I had the exact same problem. I replaced the regulator with one that
operates at 8.0 VDC and the AGC adjusted correctly. I don't know if they
received a batch of bad chips, but I used one that I had on hand, not one
from Elecraft.

I would strongly recommend a Hakko 808. Great tool! It requires a little bit
of regular maintenance (cleaning/filter changes), but is well worth the
effort. Google it and reade some of the things on the web about it.

One more thing on the Hakko 808. I would strongly recommend buying the stand
to hold it. It does get hot and the stand is well worth the price. I drilled
a couple of screws in the stand and screwed it to my bench top. I knocked it
over twice and do not want it to happen again.
