I know 7 is my limit, csts over $80.00 a month for food and litter. May have to cut down on my food (wouldn't hurt me, need to loose a few pounds). I am trying to figure out why God doesn't just bring the world to an end - we really do not deserve it. Animals basically only kill for food or protection. Man kills for pleasure. We kill each other for a pair of shoes or because we don't like the way different people look or talk, or because we want what they have and don't want to work for it. Then again I think it all boils down to GREED, SELFISHNESS, ME, MYSELF AND I. Thatis why we all end up with 7,8,12 cats. You can't trust people to do what they say they will. So you end up keeping them. Also by the time you get them healthy, you are too attached to let them go. For someone like you, it does not decrease their value, but many take them on a whim and then realize they have to clean boxes, feed them and take them to the vet. Bottom line, it is easier to just dump them or give them to someone else to deal with and then they dn't want them either. These days, children are disposable. Just look at all the stories on TV about people who lee their children in a hot car so they can go to a restaurant and enjoy a nice meal. Actually had this happen in St. Louis recently. They went into Pasta House. Someone noticed the children in the car (one of those 102 degree days) and got a policeman to break into the car and and get them out. Parents arrested on child endangerment. You get very cynical by the time you have heard "the I found this dog/cat. So many people use that excuse. When someone who really wants te best for the animal comes in, maybe they are the 10th person that day to say that so they get blasted. They are the last straw that broke the camel's back. Usually when a cat pees out of the box, their is a reason. Sometimes it could be emotional. Did you move? New member of the family, Even new furniture or a new furniture arrangement can freak them out. Nitnoy pees i unexpected places because another cat rounds the corner when she does and it frigthens her. She was chased by a raccoon that bit her tail off, leaving a 4" stump. She also will wait under or behind something and pounce on them, hissing and screaming like crazy. Like she wants to get them before they get her. She is getting better, but it has only been a year so I get Nature's Mircle in the economy size and mop it up. You don't throw a child away when they do something wrong do you? Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People!
I have asked my friends ad vet to tell me if thy think I am getting out of control and hoarding. It is so easy to take them in, you want to help them, but you have to stop and ask yourself if you can afford to feed and give them proper care. I know 7 is my limit, csts over $80.00 a month for food and litter. May have to cut down on my food (wouldn't hurt me, need to loose a few pounds). I have the basic DISH package - $24.99 that I started with 3 years ago. That gives me the news, Tom & Jerry and the old shows that I want to watch, that is enough for me. Why do people need 250 channels, they can't possibly watch them all? My babies come first. I have a big Saffari van, can take the seats out for my babies and we will just camp out. That's exactly how to do it - be nice and accommodating while biting your tongue really hard, get the anima(s) - and then POW! Let 'em have it between the eyes! But it just falls on deaf ears, so its purpose is probably more therapeutic for us to vent than to make some lasting impression on those people, who are probably just plain incorrigible! My guys go for mice, moles and such. I just wish they would get more moles. I cannot even mow my lawn without stepping into a run and falling or the wheels get stuck. Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People!
We have a no kill shelter here in Lincoln County and the "animal control" officers are finally getting the message that shooting them or sticking their noses in the exhaust of a car is not the answer. They bring them to PALS. Problem is, PALS is strictly volunteer and contributions only. They get no help from anywhere so they do not have enough room for all that come in. Many people who are loosing their jobs and homes cannot afford to feed or care for them, have to move into rented house that does not allow animals (they do allow children who can in many cases be more destructive than animals), so they bring them to PALS. We are having a drive for money for food, blankets, meds and toys. They are very careful about who gets their animals, you have to go there and be interviewed before you can adopt. They want to be sure you will care for them and can afford a pet. What really bugs me is those who give away kittens and puppies at Walmart, etc. They don't know who is taking them and why, just want to get rid of them and go home. Some people will love them, but many just give in to the kids and then when no one wants to take care of them, they dump them.Like Easter chicks and bunnies. ter...@tazzys.org wrote: > ___ > Felvtalk mailing list > Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org > http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

To many, they are nothing more than a worn out pair of shoes. Lots of people in the country let their animals run loose and do not get them spayed/neutered because it costs too much. All they would have to do is do without beer and cigarettes and soda and all junk food for a month. Then, you could live in the country where many (especially men) have the attitude that if it isn't a money making crop, mow it. If I can't sell it , get rid of it. Most of the time that means shooting the critter. They make good practice targets just before hunting season. I get on my soapbox and have earned the name "crazy cat lady. I'm sorry you feel this way - but I have NEVER met any rescuers who were, as you say, "cut-throat" on anything other than their total dedication for standing up for the helpless who are abused in more ways than we can imagine, although many of us believe that we have "seen it all". If they are anything close to that, at times, it would be perfectly understandable after being exposed to this work day after day, 24/7, for years. I cringe every time the telephone rings because I know that most of the time it will start with "I've got this cat", and the rest will be absolute garbage.. I agree. we are not speaking. From: Maureen Olvey To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Friday, August 5, 2011 7:40 PM Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People! You should tell her to tell her friend that she needs to come out of the dark ages and stop believing that old wives tale about cats smothering babies. I can just see a cat put one paw over a baby's nose and then a paw over it's mouth with the intention of smothering it. And about the whole licking the babies mouth to get the milk, that's crap but even it was true the baby can still breath out of it's nose. I just can't see how it's possible for a cat to smother a baby. And cat's can't suck so they can't suck the breath from the baby. And even if they could suck the baby's lungs are stronger and bigger than a cat's so it wouldn't be able to suck enough breath out of it to smother it. Tell your friend she shouldn't hang around such stupid people. “I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn’t….the pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further.” – Mark Twain > Date: Fri, 5 Aug 2011 15:40:57 -0700 > From: joslinir...@yahoo.com > To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org > Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People! > > I don't get that either, I have a friend of a friend who is looking to get > rid of her 12 yr old cats becuase they are having a baby and she just can't > take that chance of the cats smothering the child, while I'm sure it has > happened to people, come on, my cat was more scared of my daughter as a baby > than anything, and never touched her bottle, there are things you can do, but > I guess her mum is just persistant in her getting these cats out of her > house. Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People!
Hi all, Sorry if this is long. I've been on this group/list for a very long time. Seen many members come and go over the course of time by expressing their opinions that others didn't approve. I continue to stay on for support and to help others if I can off the group/list. However, I do agree with Kelley. There are some nasty rescues out there. They are all over. I've been in rescue for over 30 years. So this pretty much explains what I've seen, heard, and been involved with over time. My first real personal kitty had FELV as he died in 1975 to secondary complications. This goes back into time 1972. Even though growing up we had other animals and my parents were reputable breeders of cats/dogs/horses/cattle. I wanted to help a kitten that was doom to die. I remember, calling my Dad and crying they couldn't do this to the baby. He came by and got the kitten for me. Anyway, the kitty was a 5 week old Siamese mix kitten that was dumped at the "Dog Pound" this is what they were called back then. They had revolving doors anyone was able to walk in. Attitudes were bad back then by the staff. What I saw was a status ego or it was just a job either they were burned out, or didn't care it was a paycheck. After what I saw growing up I decided to try and save as many as I could. It is unfortunate many shelters are still like this! Then another special Siamese kitten came along and stoled my heart. He too was FELV. He is the reason how my rescue finally got a name. "Tazzy" so he did not die in vain. His memory is kept alive by rescuing, TNR, and helping others most importantly the kitties go to good homes. I still rescue both negative and positive FELV Siamese kitties. Even though I am getting older...lol Also, been doing hoarding situations a bit in the last few years. Because reality is if I or my connections don't do something most will be euthanized by the city/county shelters. They want to make money not to lose it. It's okay to voice your opinions and air your beef when needed. Most of us understand and it shouldn't be taken seriously. If we didn't care we wouldn't react like this! I hope what I'm saying makes sense. Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People!
It's true - rescuers get to see and hear of real scum of the earth - Do Not Adopt lists circulate constantly of people who pretend to be nice, but end up torturing kittens and cats. I had an alert of a woman on Long Island with three children and 2 cats who lost her home and is going to a shelter, where she can't keep her cats. For a while, they lived in her car with the cats. She is looking for someone to foster her two cats until she can get her act togetherthat's a NICE person; she doesn't want to give up her other children! I have one nice large cat condo available right now and offered to keep them for her...haven't heard back yet. -Original Message- From: felvtalk-boun...@felineleukemia.org [mailto:felvtalk-boun...@felineleukemia.org] On Behalf Of Maureen Olvey Sent: Friday, August 05, 2011 7:28 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People! The worse part is that if you're the one in the rescue that is taking the animal in from those kinds of people you can't tell them off because you need to get the animal in hand first so they don't hurt it or just dump it by the road. Man is it hard to bite your tongue sometimes. “I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn’t….the pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further.” – Mark Twain > Date: Fri, 5 Aug 2011 15:56:22 -0700 > From: joslinir...@yahoo.com > To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org > Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People! > > I think that people should have to be kept on record when they take animals > to the pound and what not, i wonder, quite honestly, how many people out > there get kittens and puppies and then drop them off once they get bigger or > realize that there just to hyper, or even worse, they just "grew up". And there are many other legitimate reasons and people bring us their animals with tears. But by and large, it's some sorry ass excuse that we can see right through. I think because a lot of us in rescue see more homeless animals than we can possibly adopt out it's hard to remember all the good people we've met through rescue. It seems the negative outweighs the good just in sheer numbers so I have to remind myself that although there really are some no good rotten people there are some truly wonderful people too with good hearts. Even so, I have to admit that I say "I hate people" on a regular basis too. “I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn’t….the pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further.” – Mark Twain ___ Felvtalk mailing list

UUHH, Natalie that just irks me, you know my best friend has 6 cats, most of them she took home from our house as i said before we have a lot of drop offs, and they do not have internet or cable because their animals come FIRST, they also have two dogs, but still she said that these are her children, and like you Cable is nice but so is a good book, and she can watch television on her phone, but still. As she says, one less bill is one more bag of food. From: Natalie To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Friday, August 5, 2011 5:19 PM Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People! We are all supportive of anyone who rescues, deals with unwanted and/or sick cats, fills their homes with discarded animals! I cannot tolerate people who are hypocritical about animals; pretending to love them, and then give them up at the drop of a hat even if it means abandoning them outside to fend for themselves! Here's one I just got this alert; perfect example: Subject: DECLAWED CAT---2 YRS OLD A rescue friend told me that the place in Queens where she buys her pet supplies found a cat left in a carrier outside his door this AM. She is about 2 years old, extremely friendly, seems healthy and is DECLAWED. Her coat is a luxurious shiny black. He is calling her Sophia. She has to stay in a cage until he finds her a home. If you know anyone who might like to help this baby, please call or text 917 689 8414 No pic available at this time. There are other ways of dealing with not being able to care for your animal. My husband and I supply a woman with cat food and litter for her 3 cats because she can't afford it, or else we would have to take her cats into our home. My question to someone who claims that they have no money to buy cat food is "do you have cable TV?" No, it means many of us are in rescue and our homes are usually filled to the brim with cats/dogs and sometimes we need to vent. I think that people should have to be kept on record when they take animals to the pound and what not, i wonder, quite honestly, how many people out there get kittens and puppies and then drop them off once they get bigger or realize that there just to hyper, or even worse, they just "grew up". It makes you want to ask the question, thou i know kids are no comparison, but makes you want to ask if they would give their kids up for adoption because they don't listen or potty train easy, chewed on your faviorte shoe, or was just to hyper.. sorry this is a ruff subject for me. I don't get that either, I have a friend of a friend who is looking to get rid of her 12 yr old cats becuase they are having a baby and she just can't take that chance of the cats smothering the child, while I'm sure it has happened to people, come on, my cat was more scared of my daughter as a baby than anything, and never touched her bottle, there are things you can do, but I guess her mum is just persistant in her getting these cats out of her house. It just sickens me, where are these cats supposed to find homes when there are hundreds of "babies" waiting to be adpoted, and as we all know, people love baby animals but once there older, they get the boot, i cannot stand people like that. Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People!
I do rescue and have for years, and the people who have been by far the nastiest to me, have been OTHER RESCUERS.We recently had a cat in our program who was being advertised on Craigslist because she kept peeing outside the box. Everyone CANNOT keep a cat that keeps peeing outside the box. Everyone is not like us. Yes, they tried different diets, tests for uri, tests for kidney function, different litters and different litter boxes. Nothing worked. The original rescue refused to take the cat back, kept flagging the CL ads - AND SAID TO HAVE THE CAT PUT DOWN BECAUSE NO ONE WANTS A CAT WHO PEES ON THE FLOOR. These people loved the cat and did not want to take her to a shelter. I stepped in and lent them a condo to keep her in so she wouldn't mess the floor while I went so far as to track down the original breeder of the cat (in California) . However we were lucky enough to find a foster in Dallas who specializes in cats with pee problems who took her in. I have had a cat returned twice now who pees outside the box, again the adopters have tried EVERYTHING and really wanted to keep her. I have seen people in my area spend FIVE YEARS spending much of their time running a rescue out of business instead of saving lives because they did not like the way they did rescue. Now there is another large rescue people hate because they do not like the way they do rescue and instead of saving animals actually go around to the various adoption sites pretending to be potential adopters and grilling the volunteers. I am so sick of rescue attitudes I could just scream. Some of the nastiest, vilest people I have ever met have been in rescue - and to be fair some of the kindest as well. Cruelty to humans is still cruelty. Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People!
I totally agree, but another side of the story...I got treated VERY bad by shelter personnel because I brought in a stray husky I found on the side of the road! I knew they thought I was lying. It made me feel horribble because I would never do that to one of my own animals!!! If they treat people like that, who are trying to help the animal find its owners or at least get off the road so it won't get hit, they might not do it again! Not me!! Ill just take the bad treatment over leaving a cat or dog in danger! Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People!
My question to someone who claims that they have no money to buy cat food is "do you have cable TV?" The response has often been "Yes, butI need it." -Original Message- From: felvtalk-boun...@felineleukemia.org [mailto:felvtalk-boun...@felineleukemia.org] On Behalf Of Edna Taylor Sent: Friday, August 05, 2011 4:19 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People! Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People!
I don't see that it is not kind and supportive list but the truth is the truth, people give up their pets at an alarming rate and for, sometimes, what amounts to really stupid reasons. They also leave them in abandoned, foreclosed homes to starve to death. Does this mean that we are not supportive and don't care? No, it means many of us are in rescue and our homes are usually filled to the brim with cats/dogs and sometimes we need to vent. Doesn't mean that we no longer want to support and help others, it means that our hearts are broken and as someone posted on their FB profile and I copied: "My pets/fosters are not disposable. They may have imperfections, may eventually have health problems, and be a lot of work. But when I got them, I promised them a forever home. No matter what their faults are, they are good at something, and deserve to be loved and have a forever home. They are not only my pets/fosters, They are a part of my family." > From: moonv...@gmail.com > Date: Fri, 5 Aug 2011 14:57:03 -0500 > To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org > Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People! > > Wow, this used to be a really kind, supportive, positive list. See, that is why I have a hard time fostering anymore, I DON'T know where they will end up or what will happen. I rescued two beautiful Flame Point Himis from the Houston SPCA and they were SO skinny and, of course, had ringworm. Well, after 3 months of nursing them back to health and getting to know how special they were, I finally adopted them out to a home that I assumed was really good and, all things considered, it IS a good home; however, they let them outside and one of them was taken by an owl. My rules are very clear, no declawing, no outside, no dumping them at a shelter or giving them away, but people don't listen and do what they want to do. I know we have all gotten the call "hey, I found this cat, she/he is starving, has a bunch of health problems and the microchip comes back to your group" and when you call the adopter, they will not answer your calls or emails. One more story about trusting people. A local rescue group her got a call from the shelter telling them that someone turned in one of their cats (microchipped) and come to find out, it was the FOSTER who took the cat to the shelter. Hard to trust anyone these days :( > Date: Fri, 5 Aug 2011 14:30:17 -0400 > From: at...@optonline.net > To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org > Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People! > > You have to admit, those are unusual cases, where people REALLY have allergy > problems, or moving and can't take pets - but most wait until a week or two > before leaving. Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People!
Arizona and Florida were hardest hit in 2008/2009 when the real estate market tanked and because of that those two states have the biggest influx of pets into shelters and animals left behind at foreclosed houses. I read an article yesterday about Homestead Florida and the numbers of abandoned pets. One was at a house that used to be owned by a woman who was a dog rescuer, there were many dogs left behind :( Of course, as the article points out, the big screen TVs and jewelry, XBox game systems, etc. were not left behind, only the animals :( So, am I a bit jaded? yes, yes I am > Date: Fri, 5 Aug 2011 11:17:43 -0700 > From: delain...@yahoo.com > To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org > Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People! > > Lets spay and neuter the people.Phoenix is GIVING away cats and dogs this > weekend because they have so many in their shelterOne woman broght in 8 > dogs.. > > > > --- On Fri, 8/5/11, Lynda Wilson wrote: > > > From: Lynda Wilson > Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People! > To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org > Date: Friday, August 5, 2011, 10:57 AM > > > That's a shame. Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People!
You have to admit, those are unusual cases, where people REALLY have allergy problems, or moving and can't take pets - but most wait until a week or two before leaving. Yes, I agree about "some" rescue groups, but also seldom happens - some may be a bit judgmental, but probably for very good reason. With getting daily updates from NYC of the kill-list for the next day, I am at the point of not looking at the pictures but just passing them on with the hope that at least one of them can be saved! Reading the surrender notes on their cards is heartbreaking and unconscionable! We had one adopter bring back two cats adopted from us as kittens, from Michigan! Others, we never hear from, and I worry about them. I stay in touch with MOST adopters! -Original Message- From: felvtalk-boun...@felineleukemia.org [mailto:felvtalk-boun...@felineleukemia.org] On Behalf Of Kelley Saveika Sent: Friday, August 05, 2011 12:48 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People! Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People!
I DO tend to be judgmental when I get the "I met a man and need to dump my cat because he has a dog/kids/hates cats . . ." email. As a matter of fact, got one the other day. Woman in Austin threw her 14 year old declawed cat outside in this heat because her fiance is "allergic" AND then to add insult to injury, she posted the cat for FREE on Craigslist. Yep, those are the types of people that I have no use for and personally, I feel they should be spayed/neutered. Are all people like that? Absolutely not. Are too many people like that? you bet your boots. Re: [Felvtalk] No Good Rotten People!
In all honesty, I have found MANY people in rescue to be horribly cruel and judgmental - towards OTHER PEOPLE, particularly other people in rescue. Rescue is a cutthroat business and not for the faint of heart. There's always someone ready to kick you when you're down, say you are not doing something right because you aren't doing what they would do, etc etc etc. I've seen rescue groups purposely try to run other rescue groups out of rescue. (This is not directed towards anyone here, just what I think whenever I see an "I hate people" thread.) In contrast, MOST of my adopters have been lovely people. We did have a couple who moved to NYC and had a baby who was allergic to the cats (and you can ask all the questions on a form you want, when it comes down to it you don't know what people will do) and they bothered to contact us instead of sending the cats off to the pound. We made arrangements for them to be picked up (they paid half) and delivered back to us safely.
