I think some cats can react to oregano oil and some don't. I wouldn't try it. My vets always recommend a very mild bleach and water dip once a week for 3 weeks. But Lyme sulfur dip works well too! It's the spores that makes it SO hard to get rid of. By the way, the bleach and water ratio is 2 TBLSP Of regular bleach to a gallon of water. I had a bad case when I was a mere 6 years old. The doctor (who started out as a vet, went to Austria for medical studies) painted the spots with gentian violet. Cleared up, hair came back in extra curly and thick. Not too sure how it would work on cats because they might try licking it off and not sure how it would affect the cat if taken internally. I use them too...you can type the number, color and type of pill it is ( round, oblong tablet or capsule. You will find that they are all generic human antibiotics. I have used them on my cats and dogs for years. And myself. Honestly the one thing that I use for infections most is Oregano Oil. Take it by mouth and use it on the wound. My son in law had MRSA on his arm. They cut it out and sent him home. Last time i was bitten was at our shelter they insisted i go to the dr. AC never called me even though dr. Filled out the info. I have been bitten many times over the years by my own cats. Sometimes play just got too rough o I was trying to get a mat out of their hair. Last time was a neighbor's catwho came to court my girls (all spayed so wouldn't do him any good). Well Harley who was 3 months old darted out the door and sipped around the corner of the garage and startled Moses who jumped for Harley and got me when I reached to grab Harley and get him out of harms way. It was bleeding all over the place so washed it with peroxide and put on a pressure bandage and went to ER. Then I had to find the cat's home. Didand we confined him for the equired time even tho I did not think it necessary. He looked to good to have rabies. Good ending, we ar oth still alive and well. Yes. Go get a tetanus shot if you haven't had one in the last ten years. It's just a safety precaution, but my Doc fussed at me recently for not doing it after I got bit. Be careful about giving him too much info about the cat. Tell him it was a friend's cat. Sometimes the Docs will say you need to report it in case the animal has rabies. Don't do it. You'll be forced to take her to Animal Control so they can hold her for ten days to make sure she doesn't have rabies. Just tell him you were holding your friend's indoor only cat when you got bit and that you're not giving him your friend's name because she lives out of state. Yes, I'm paranoid but I've seen it happen. The doc may want to prescribe you some antibiotics just in case. Probably wouldn't hurt to take them. If you washed your hand really good immediately after the bite you should be okay even though it will hurt for a couple of days. It probably won't get infected, but it's easier to take antibiotics for a couple of weeks as a precaution versus trying to deal with it after it became infected. But on Monday I'd recommend going to the doc. You can also get a tetanus shot at the health department but I was concerned they'd try to make me report the bite. Oh, the red and swollen and pain is normal. When I got bit a couple months ago I didn't think it was that bad at first. But then it hurt like hell for a few days. Cat bites can be very serious! If you have any antibiotics at home and antibiotic cream for the bite (hope you washed it and disinfected it really well) - use them immediately! Unfortunately, whenever there's a cat bite, the doctor may have to notify Animal Control, and the cat may have to be in quarantine (it can be in your house) - but as long as you have the rabies certificate, it's safe to assume that not much will be done about Amber! I would take the bite seriously; play it by ear - if it gets any worse, go to the emergency room! I was bitten on my thumb at the nail bed - OMG, did that hurt! I immediately took antibiotics and used cream on finger. I was fine. Yes, I'm paranoid but I've seen it happen. The doc may want to prescribe you some antibiotics just in case. Probably wouldn't hurt to take them. If you washed your hand really good immediately after the bite you should be okay even though it will hurt for a couple of days. It probably won't get infected, but it's easier to take antibiotics for a couple of weeks as a precaution versus trying to deal with it after it became infected. But on Monday I'd recommend going to the doc. You can also get a tetanus shot at the health department but I was concerned they'd try to make me report the bite. Get to the ER and when asked whose cat just tell them yours and the cat has its shots. They never asked for proof of rabies on my cat, no one ever came to my house or called me nor did they even ask the cat's name. But, DO go to the doctor or ER ASAP. That is nothing to play around with. I was at the ER until 4:30 am getting IV antibiotics. Yes, it is a bacteria that cats have in their mouth and it can be deadly. Red lines are what you want to look for. Wash the wound with antibiotic soap and keep antibiotic ointment on it. Also treat with hot compresses. It will draw white blood cells to the area. The Dr told me to do this. Autumn bit the fire out of me when I was 6 months pregnant. My hand swelled up and was red and sore. I never developed streaks, but went to Urgent Care for antibiotics. Make sure you eat your yogurt, if you get them. They are STRONG. FELV + have filthy mouths:-/ I also urge you not to tell them that it was your cat. OMG - when I got bit a couple months ago I just ran inside and washed it out really good with soap and water. That was it. Guess I was lucky. I had read that soap and water are good enough as long as you wash it good so now when I get scratched I just use soap and water. Anyway, I never went to the doc until three weeks later for something else. That's when I talked to him about it and he fussed at me. Guess I'll be more careful next time. Wow! Reading all of these messages with bad experience with cat bites, I consider myself VERY lucky. I've gotten bit a lot, but it sounds like it has to be a deep puncture type bite. Is this correct? I just got back form the doctor and got two different antibiotics, and a tetnus shot. She wants to do an x-ray next week. Their x-ray machine was not working this morning. The doctor warned me how dangerous a cat bite can be. The area is red and swollen and still hurts. I explained how the bite happened. The doc seemed satisfied with my story. I did leave out the FELV part just in case... ON A HAPPY NOTE: Just when I arrived at the doctors office I received a call from the vet. Amber's IFA test was NEGATIVE!! What a relief. Just goes to prove that every cat should be restested. Also, he guesses Amber to be from 2 to 3 years old, not 6 mo. to 1 yr.. like the last one. He said that a younger cat could not have as much tartar on their teeth as she does no matter how poor their diet. Also. he shaved her belly and it looks like she has a spay scar. I am going to get the smaller cage out and put it upstaris and I will put Amber in it occassionally so they can all sniff each other and hopefully soon get along. I am moving her into the spare bedroom as well. I do not plan to put her in my lap again!!! Yes. Thank goodness it was an arm. A feral bit me hard enough to break my little finger. Two surgeries later. The second surgery was to straighten a nail (go figure). When they opened the finger up it was full of infection despite a lot of antibiotics and did not look infected. The surgeon was surprised. Tell the doctor it was a stray and you have no clue where it went otherwise your insurance company will have a field day refusing to cover it and demanding the name of the friend etc. You can refuse rabies shots. FYI: I was at the ER within 15 minutes of the broken finger, having the wound cleaned, x-rayed etc. It still got infected. You have a lot more wiggle room on an arm though. IMHO. Sometimes the Docs will say you need to report it in case the animal has rabies. Don't do it. You'll be forced to take her to Animal Control so they can hold her for ten days to make sure she doesn't have rabies. Just tell him you were holding your friend's indoor only cat when you got bit and that you're not giving him your friend's name because she lives out of state. Yes, I'm paranoid but I've seen it happen. The doc may want to prescribe you some antibiotics just in case. Probably wouldn't hurt to take them. If you washed your hand really good immediately after the bite you should be okay even though it will hurt for a couple of days. It probably won't get infected, but it's easier to take antibiotics for a couple of weeks as a precaution versus trying to deal with it after it became infected. But on Monday I'd recommend going to the doc. You can also get a tetanus shot at the health department but I was concerned they'd try to make me report the bite. Amber had her rabies shot three months ago on the same day she was diagnosed with the FELV. After I decided i was not going to euthanize her, I let them give her the other shots. I told the doctor this morning what happened and that I had told my vet about it. She just said to keep an eye on the cat...I guess to see if she shows signs of rabies. She did not say anything about reporting it. She wants me to have the x-ray next week and come back in 10 days for a follow up. The bite was on my hand actually, just below my thumb on the side. It still hurts! Yes, I'm paranoid but I've seen it happen. The doc may want to prescribe you some antibiotics just in case. Probably wouldn't hurt to take them. If you washed your hand really good immediately after the bite you should be okay even though it will hurt for a couple of days. It probably won't get infected, but it's easier to take antibiotics for a couple of weeks as a precaution versus trying to deal with it after it became infected. But on Monday I'd recommend going to the doc. You can also get a tetanus shot at the health department but I was concerned they'd try to make me report the bite. Lynda, Yes, it is usually a very deep bite to require medical treatment. When Pootie bit me (don't know why, he was sleeping and it was about 3 am) he bit clear through to the muscle of my forearm. Consider taking her bedding and putting it where the other cats can smell it and theirs where she can smell it. Before I got Bob (dog), his rescuer and I exchanged bedding (from my cats). I really believe it helps. Congratulations on the test results. Consider Rescue Remedy in the water of everyone. I like Feliway spray but know some on the list haven't had good luck with it. I am going to get the smaller cage out and put it upstaris and I will put Amber in it occassionally so they can all sniff each other and hopefully soon get along. I am moving her into the spare bedroom as well. I do not plan to put her in my lap again!!! This is the first bite I have had that concerned me...most have been nips with broken skin but nothing deep. However, I wash them to death and keep a very close eye on them. It is part of the feral world. However, anything on a thin skin area, hands, face, feet, gets special attention. Edna, So sorry you experienced such a horrible bite! Did it get infected? Is he a FeLV positive kitty? At least I know what to do now if it ever happens to me or any member of my family. It sounds much too painful. Some people take pain much better than others but not me, I'm a total wimp!! Hopefully, I will never get a deep puncture wound from a bite. I let my male cat get rough enough with me that he wraps his paws around my hand and bites my hand while thumping both back feet against my forearm. He does not draw his claws, but occasionally he has bitten me hard enough that I hollered ouch! Yeah, he gets a little rough sometimes, and he is neutered. Glad you got the bite taken care of. Not sure why the X-ray -- does she think maybe the bite chipped a bone or something? I got bit by my first feral -- my fault, tried to get too familiar too soon. I had gotten her from a co-worker who trapped but could not keep her in her motor home, and she had had an infection treated but hadn't gotten the rabies shots yet. Her son had gotten bitten the night I came to get her and they chased her around the room they were keeping her in, and nothing happened to him. Me, I got the stripes up the arm and a course of antibiotics. The nurse practitioner I saw told me I HAD to report the bite to the cops, and even said she would be calling them ahead of time so that I was sure to follow up. So I followed up, cop came, obviously had NO idea why it was a big deal. He came into our porch room, where we had her, and looked at her from a distance, shrugged and went home. Made me feel like an idiot because I had to *explain* that the nurse practitioner had *made* me call. But it was good that I was paranoid about the cat bite, since it was turning into something bad. This was several years ago now. We spent several months (we both worked, time more limited than we'd have liked) getting her used to us, but one day she realized she really liked being petted and skritched, and that was that. She still doesn't want to be picked up, and we honor that, but her favorite thing to do is to come and snuggle our heads when we're relaxing on the couches watching TV. I believe it also helps to make the wound bleed some before you start treating it with Neosporin or whatever. I think the idea is to get at least some of the bad bugs out of it that way. Then, of course, a thorough, thorough washing and the antibiotic cream. That's what I have always been told. Let a bite wound bleed freely for as long as possible to wash out the bacteria. Bacteria from a FeLV kitty is no different than from any other cat. They all can lead to a bad infection. Let it bleed, wash with soap and hot water, rinse with hydrogen peroxide, soak i Epsom salts added to hot water and watch for signs of infection. I've had many that have healed just fine and a few that required an antibiotic.
