Did they ever clean his ears? If so, that can cause the tilting. It can take as much as 3 mo. to go away. Went through this last year. Cat is fine now. Dede --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey guys. Teddy had a head tilt for a short time. I don't know that I ever got an explanation. It was on and off. You might have his vision checked...Teddy had a retinal hemorrhage. Many years ago, my calico Persian Priscilla had a similar experience. It turned out she had been bitten by some type of insect which caused her dizziness. I can't remember what my vet prescribed--but he did know just what to do for her. And she recovered and lived many more years in good health. - Original Message - From: laurieskatz To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Monday, November 05, 2007 6:52 PM Subject: Re: Whitey Teddy had a head tilt for a short time. Re: Whitey, Day 8
Sounds like he's doing well. I don't know that there's anything you can do about his breath besides wait until he has the teeth removed. I have a cat in that same situation and my vet didn't recommend doing anything to his mouth until he's better and can have the dental. I removed all carpet from my entire house, and I love it! Michael -- I got some stuff at Petco, a dental rinse for about $9 a bottle that you add to their water that's supposed to remove tartar and plaque. Too soon to know if it's really working, though. I looked into the Petzlife, but could only get it online and wanted to try it sooner, and also there was that price thing, and the fact that I type for a living and couldn't afford having my fingers chewed off by trying to brush or apply gel. ;-). (We have a cat who has bad tartar and plaque, but is a bad risk for anesthetic so putting him under for scaling is not something we want to consider. He has no problem with the taste of the water.) If you go to a pet store there are several products, from toothpaste to water additives, that will probably freshen Whitey's breath and get at least some of the gunk off his teeth. Hopefully the rotten teeth are what's causing the stench rather than some other undisclosed problem. Best of luck, you're doing a great job with the little guy. Diane R. lol, diane, the finger chewing comment cracked me up.? I found a local place that sells the PetsLife oral care gel, and I bought some ($28.00ouch!)? I'll let you guys know how it works for me.? The directions said youdon't have to apply it directly to the teeth as long as it gets in the mouth, so what I done was took an allergy syringe (1cc volume) and took the needle offthen I filled it with the gel, and squirted about half at a time in his mouth, on each side.? Michael Marylyn is the person who has used PetzLife successfully and recommended it. A syringe is a great idea. I've been putting it on my finger (while Dennis attempts to hold her mouth open) trying to rub it on her gums. It is a major 'event' We have used it for a few weeks and I think it is working. It is so hard to get a good look at her gums. Hopefully as Whitey's immune system improves, his mouth will get better. When we first got MeMe her mouth was just awful for such a young cat and her breath was lethal. As her health has improved, her mouth has too. We still have two areas that are inflamed and we are hoping the PetzLife will be the remedy. Hope Whitey's 9th day is a good one. Re: Whitey
Hi Michael, I am way behind on emails, but definitely wanted to touch base with you on the hyperT with Whitey (btw, I thought that was very funny you guys didn't know she was a male!!!) When you start Whitey out on the meds (either Tapazole or Methimazole -generic Tap), only start at 2.5 mg 2x per day. I belong to the hyperT site and we constantly see vets starting cats out at 5 mg 2x per day and that is no longer the protocol for dosing and often results in overdosing. It shocks the system. The meds may need to be upped very gradually but introductory meds should be low. Scratching around the head is a classic overdosing sign. Also, the radioactive iodine treatment is the best way to go for hyperT. It's a cure, whereas the meds are only a bandaid on a disease that continues to progress. The meds don't stop the progression. Whitey is still young and will most likely be a good candidate. Also, the heart murmur is most likely due to the hyperT. You will probably see it correct itself after the thyroid is regulated. The meds need to be given 2x per day because they are generally out of the system in 12 hours. Now I'm going to go read all the rest of the Whitey posts and see if everything I've written has already been covered!!! LOL. And I don't think you should feel bad at all about caring for this cat and taking him in. Do what you have to Michael. Obviously, no one else is. I'm thinking Innova Evo canned is going to the the highest, without grains of course. Let us know if you find something with more. I am hoping he doesn't have FIP, but be careful of the corona virus titer. I have seen people say here that that is NOT an indication of FIP. You might look in the archives for this. Getting his infection gone will be the best thing because then you will know from his bloodwork what you are really dealing with. Glad his thyroid is normal. I have seen incorrect thyroid results, where the kitty showed hyperT but was not, but it's rare. :) Wendy Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world - indeed it is the only thing that ever has! ~~~ Margaret Meade ~~~ - Original Message From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Friday, October 12, 2007 12:47:03 PM Subject: Ok, guys. I just got off the phone with Whitey's vet. Good news and what could potentially be really bad news. Good news first. First of all, his Thyroid is normal, which Dr. Dolen says defies logic. He wants to retest in a few weeks. All his other major organ functions were normal...kidneys, liver, thyroid, everything was good. His WBC were elevated (of course, due probably to the severe ear infection). He is chronically anemic (RBC was 25ish). The thing that concerned Dr. Dolen the most was his elevated Globulin and Albumin levels. His globulin was 8.4, when he says 3ish is the normal range, so he said that indicated a chronic severe infection. He's getting the lab to run an FIP titer on the blood sample they have from the other tests, so we'll know something about that in about a week. He says either the ear infection was so horribly bad that its a miracle he's still alive (to have caused such an elevated globulin level) or he has FIP. I'm certainly hoping its the ear infection, something we can work with. Any of you guys have experience with FIP? I understand its deadly, usually within weeks of symptoms, but I was wondering about the human aspect of it..what have YOU guys experienced with it? He recommended high protein kitten food for him right now. He said the more protein the better...canned tuna, chicken, whatever has the most protein. I'm going to go by a local natural pet food store on my way home from work that carries premium kitten foods. Also interested if any of you know what the absolute highest nutritional content wet food would be? I'm thinking Innova kitten food in a can, maybe wellness kitten food? He's had a little bit of all of them :) As for the FIP, I've been doing a bit of reading myself, and not to worry, regardless of the elisa titer results, I'm not going to assume its FIP unless he's more symptomatic. He's definitely making progress. He's taken 8 days worth of his antibiotic now, and has 3 days left. He's still a little wobbly and can't quite walk straight, but he IS walking, and that's definate progress! Still eating well and using the litterbox. He really is a trooper! He is NOT liking that PetzLife oral care gel at ALL. But the funny thing is as mad as he gets at me, as soon as I'm done, he comes right back and lays down in my lap, even though I'm making him do things he doesn't like. Says a lot about his loving personality, doesn't it? My three siamese in the house wouldn't look at me for hours if I done that to them! LOL Michael ** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

Hey Michael, Good to hear from you. Thanks for the tip on Solid Gold Tuna. I'll put that in my archives. Do you think he'll need a longer course of antibiotics given the severity of the infection? It bothers me that he's still a bit wobbly with only 3 days left on his meds. What do you think? :) Wendy Be a better Heartthrob. Get better relationship answers from someone who knows. Yahoo! Maybe you could call the home you think he belongs to and let them know the shape he's in. Ask them if they would be willing to let you have him so he can get the medical attention he needs and let them know you have already spent so and so amount to get him checked out and would like to be reimbursed if they want to keep him and get the medical care done. They may be willing to give him up. If you can call them with out letting them know who you are all the better that way if they say they aren't going to spend that kind of money it would make it a lot easier to keep him which I personally would. -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... Re: Whitey
imho, I would not call. People here are the people who would want to be called but none of us would have let our kitty get in this condition. If they aren't nice people they could make things miserable for you and this kitty by demanding his return. You are stewards for the kitty. Imho whatever I would do, the kitty's best interests and health would be the most important consideration. Letting them know does not ensure either of these. Just my opinion based on my experience. I have had owners refuse offers of help (for spay/neuter, behavioral training for dogs, etc) ~ and who knows why. I think some people have a sense that no one is going to tell THEM what to do with THEIR animal. bottom line. I wouldn't risk it. After months of feeding and brushing, I got her fur cleaned up and she put on a few pounds.? Last night I went? to feed her and found her so disoriented she couldn't even stand up, so Jeff took her to the vet this morning, and this is where the story picks up... Ok, guys.? He has a severe inner-ear infection. ? He has a grade 3 heart murmur ? He has advanced/severe gingivitis.? Needs several teeth pulled. ? FeLV/FIV NEGATIVE. (Thank God for something!) ? Re: Whitey
First of all, I need to tell you that if you are going to take this cat in and care for him properly, it is going to cost a good deal of . I would go to who you think owns him, explain what all is wrong with him and what will need to be done to fix it, and that you are willing to pay for it if they are willing to surrender the cat to you - if that's the case. The heart murmur at this point is of concern to me. I have a kitty with heart disease, and she can't have vaccines nor her teeth pulled. I would have an echo done to determine the cause of the heart murmur. This will be $280+. It could be benign or it could indicate heart disease. If he has heart disease he shouldn't have vaccines or his teeth pulled due to the risks of anasthesia, however the health benefits of being neutered might outweigh the risks of being under anasthesia. If he is able to be vaccinated, I'd wait until the series was done, then mix, but that's obviously a personal decision. Outside he is at risk of being run over by a car, eaten by a wild animal, God forbid taken by an animal hater and killed, drinking antifreeze and dying, being shot, etc etc. All worse than FELV IMHO. Michael, First I have to tell you, I love the pictures! You can tell he feels safe , loved and secure...maybe, for the first time in his life? I think it is wonderful that you and Jeff are helping him...I'm sorry , but when I see any animal, obviously neglected or in a dangerous situation, I consider the animal first and never the people who OWN the animal. Remember when Caroline was going through her thing, trying to figure out how to resolve her issue about the lost cat she found with the tags...that had the collar so tight around her neck and was so skinny and ratty? Well, she was trying to find the OWNER, but scared to give the cat over...It ended up being an amazing story, with a good ending , I hope??? I was all for Caroline just keeping the cat and I guess that was the wrong answer for that case, but if you actually do feel this cat has a home and is so neglected...oh well...I am always for the welfare of the animal...You guys have to be the best thing that ever happened to this cat... Feeling as you do, if I were you, I might go meet the people and have a talk with them...You can just say the cat kind of adopted you and Jeff and this is what you have done for the cat and discoverd about their cat... Nine chances out of ten they will be happy someone is doing all this...and you will then be able to do this in the open...It is a wonder Whitey is negative for diseases...maybe he was never even vaccinated and obviously is wandering around...I think everyone that knows cats knows that cats are always looking for that better home or that extra home...My neighbor's cat likes to hang at my house and my cat Bruno is crazy about my friend Beth's down the street...He eats and naps there, in the day and gets praise when he catches moles in her yard, they let Bruno keep what he catces...I rescue the moles and release...Bruno spends his day at Beth's and is home to eat dinner and sleep in my house at night...Bruno is a survivor...came from Maui Hawaii where he used to hustle the workers, men, at a sugar factory at lunch hour for handouts...ended up at the Maui Humane Society...carefully delivered by a worker, who later called to say what a great cat he was and to please find him a good home...I'm knowing some cats are better at hustling than others. Whitey might be such a cat...My friend Beth and her family are justs crazy about Bruno, especially her elderly father...Bruno is particularly fond of men...I always figured it was because of all those lunch hours at the sugar factory...Between lunch handouts, Bruno hunted rats...The bigger the rats the better...always left rat heads everywhere...Maui has zillions of rats...Where I lived we had over fifty avocado trees, lots of rats...I just am giving you a case study of my little survivor...thinking Whitey has picked you now for his life, because you are what he needs...As far as mixing your positives with Whitey...I just do not know what to say...I know you have vaccinated him...and being older he may be pretty immune to all the diseases out there ...One reason I mentioned maybe talking to the people you believe own Whitey is to gather history on Whitey and maybe just see if they would be able to offer him a little better attention at their house while he is with them...especially, since they will be aware someone is noticing...If you had a situation where everyone was negative at your house I would not even sweat it...I'd just take Whitey in...end of story...I do see where you are a bit stuck here, thinking about mixing your guys...You are the best...You and Jeff...Others will weigh in and probably say, since Whitey is already pretty old, just let them mix and give him tons of love. From what you have done for Whitey, so far, you guys have already saved his life once...no kidding...Best wishes , Glenda and family --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: View full size ??? Re: Whitey
I urge you to never let this cat outside again (with the obvious implication that he will never go home again). His previous people are totally irresponsible or terribly misinformed about cat care. His health depends on him staying inside. Even in one room, he is better off than in the previous conditions that resulted in his current state. I have rescued strays and decided that if anyone ever approached me I could give them the vet bill and tell them they can have the cat back after they pay the vet bill. Anyone who cared this little or who knows this little about cat care is highly unlikely to want their kitty back with this condition. No one has come looking. In one case I went to the owner's home in another city (the cat had a mirco-chip and lived in a different city than where I found him in bad shape ~ dislocated jaw and broken leg) and left the cat at my home. I did not contact the man again and did not give him the cat back. I believe these cats cross our paths for a reason. I know some might not agree but this is the path I have chosen. Laurie
Re: Whitey
I certainly agree with that - no guilt! The kitty needs help and wasn't getting it. He's lucky to find you. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but as a white kitty with 2 differently colored eyes, isn't there a good chance this kitty is deaf? Just wanted to mention since that impacts the safety of being outside. Thank you for helping this kitty, she sounds beautiful! We had an all-white rescue this year, someone was evicted from their apt. and left her behind--had already thrown her out weeks before according to the mgmt., when we got her, her ears were burned from sleeping on the roof of her old home/apt. Apparently carcinomas in white cats are common from sunburns, but fortunately hers wasn't that bad and she healed very well. Kelly, You just posted about losing a fur kid on Sat. I take it it was Whitey? I'm so sorry for your loss. When you are able, would you like to tell us a little more of Whitey's story? You are such a good human to open your heart and home to so many in need Kelly. Each and every one is special and their loss hurts so much. I'm sending you strength and love to carry on and great thanks for all you do. It's so very kind of you to continue to post and help others when your heart is hurting so. Go and spend some time out in that wonderful habitat of yours. Look around you and know how special YOU are. How is the rescue dog doing today? Re: Whitey
Whitey just got his first home bath (they washed his butt once at the vet hospital), I just changed out of my water soaked clothes (he was the third in line, and the first one was not a happy camper). He was amazing. I sat him in the sink, and we had a little talk about how this wasn't going to hurt him, and that it was ok. Then I said now I'm going to turn the water on, just a little, see? that's ok, you're alright and I turned it up slowly, and I got his back feet wet, and reassured him that it's ok with lots of oh you're such a good boy, oh so good! and I began to work up his body, talking the whole time about how easy this is and how good he is, and we added the shampoo, at which point we had a discussion about how this makes him feel like a cat again Now we put some shampoo on, oh yes, isn't that nice, you're such a good boy. You'll feel like a cat again, you want to be a cat, right? Because right now you're all dirty like a dog, you don't want to be like a dog, you want to be a handsome cat, you're going to be so handsome, such a pretty boy! and he sat there for about half the bath, at which point I needed to wash his butt (that he was sitting on), so I said, Ok, now if you just stand up and put your paws up here (on the edge of the sink), we can wash that booty, and make you smell all nice! and at that point, he slumped down and laid down on his side in the sink and let me wash his butt! I thought maybe I'd killed him (heart attack), but his eyes were blinking. He was completely docile, not a single claw came out the entire time, no growls, no howls, nothing. To say I am amazed is putting it lightly. He is an amazing cat. (and now I don't have to worry about his neuter incision getting infected from all the poo) I wish I would have still had the camera for pictures, but I had to return it to my boss. The vomiting is much better, and he is able to hold down small amounts of food at a time so long as he is not given his pain medicine (it was making his nausea worse, as when he vomited it up it made him foam at the mouth and gag terribly). Which means he's in pain, of course. I feel just terrible for him, he's so miserable! The vet did lots of testing, including a full blood panel, and it came back perfect. All the tests say he is in perfect health, yet he is really ill, and not doing good at all. I'm going to have a friend come over tomorrow and do reiki on him. I feel so bad, I didn't want to neuter him at all! I'm going to try to get to the health food store tomorrow to get some Rescue Remedy too. He is sitting on that ice pack, and I've heard no growling since I put it in there, so I think it's helping. I'm so glad to hear Whitey seems better today. It's such a shame, esp after you had such uneasy feelings about getting him neutered in the first place. I wouldn't be so concerned about getting the pain med into him, you don't know for sure that it didn't contribute to his nausea. I'm betting he eats soon enough on his own. Feel better soon Whitey! At least there was no blood in his vomit! None in his diarrhea either, but you can tell he is suffering, he lays there on his side really stiff, and holds his back leg up, and as he gets tired, and his leg begins to fall, he growls, and tries to lick himself back there, and growls, tries to find a better position, growls more. I feel SO BAD! I tried to prop his leg up on a pillow, but he wouldn't let me. I think I'm going to put an ice pack under his bedding, so if he wants to he can ice his butt. Re: (OT) Please send good vibes for Whitey, unusual post-neuter complications
The fact that he wants to eat means that his pain is not that bad. When they are in a lot of pain they do not want to eat. So I think you are right to hold off on the pain meds, and just see how he does. People, cats included, can have strange reactions to anesthesia. My mom has had a lot of surgeries, and until they switched the kind of anesthesia they used on her she would vomit after waking up every time and feel sick for days. I think maybe he is just having a reaction like that, and maybe it is less common in cats. With humans, there is something they can give with the anesthesia to lessen this kind of reaction. Maybe there is for cats too, if he ever needs surgery again (which hopefully he won't, knock on wood!). Sending good vibes for healing, Michelle
Re: (OT) Please send good vibes for Whitey, unusualpost-neuter complications
He's sitting directly on the ice pack I put in there, so I think he appreciates the ice pack! Poor baby! I know when I had surgery an ice pack was the only thing that gave me any relief for the first two days. I imagine a neutering would be similarly painful. Re: (OT) Please send good vibes for Whitey, unusual post-neuter complications
Well, he came home at around 6PM, and it's now almost 9:30PM, and he's eaten two batches of food, the first one was about two tablespoons, with about 8 kibbles of dry mixed in at around 7pm, and at 9pm I had to give him half a pill, and I hid it in a tablespoon of wet food, and he gobbled that right down. He is sitting on that ice pack, and I've heard no growling since I put it in there, so I think it's helping. They said to give him a couple of tablespoons every hour or two, and if he's holding it all down by tomorrow, I can start to give him more a little at a time. Oh, as I was typing, he just cleaned himself back there, and he wasn't growling! Yay, the ice is helping! Re: (OT) Please send good vibes for Whitey, unusual post-neuter complications
I saw his pictures and I've been thinking of him. I'm sorry he is in pain. I can't really offer advice as the clinic where I get my guys spayed and neutered gives a pain shot. I've never had anyone have adverse reactions to it and I don't have to administer additional pain meds. Re: (OT) Please send good vibes for Whitey, unusual post-neuter complications
Maybe it's a reaction to the type of pain meds he was given and now he'll be okay. That's what I'm praying for. What are you feeding him? Could you try just some semi-raw/raw chicken breast diced up in tiny bits? If it does have to do with stress then it's good he's back home with you. Please let us know how he's doing, Nina Jennifer Phaewryn O'Gwynn wrote: Sorry to be off topic, but can everyone please send good vibes/glow/prayers for Whitey? He was neutered on Wednesday morning, and when I brought him home, he began to vomit and have severe diarrhea. He went back to the vet and was hospitalized overnight, and is now back home (mostly because I can't afford for him to be at the vet's office any longer). They said that if it were a reaction to the anesthesia, it would show something off on the blood work. He's FELV and FIV negative, and has no parasites. All the tests say he is in perfect health, yet he is really ill, and not doing good at all. I'm going to have a friend come over tomorrow and do reiki on him. The vet thinks it's probably stress, since nothing appears to be wrong physically. Please send good well wishes for him! He is such a sweet boy, and he is so miserable now. I feel so bad, I didn't want to neuter him at all! I'm going to try to get to the health food store tomorrow to get some Rescue Remedy too. He's eating good, which is a good sign, but I'm having to limit his intake, as he's only allowed 2-3 tablespoons at a time in an effort to keep him from vomiting. Anyone else had cats get violently ill after surgery like this? The vet said she's never seen this before, and it's a VERY odd reaction, especially since there's NOTHING showing up on any of the tests that is abnormal. Poor little angel, he sounds so uncomfortable. Is there a homeopathic for surgical pain? Nina Jennifer Phaewryn O'Gwynn wrote: At least there was no blood in his vomit!
The Royal Princess Kitty Katt had a really reaction to the meds they used to knock her out for a biopsy. I thought I was going to lose her for over a week. Of course the specialist blamed it on something else instead of a bad reaction. My own vet's wording made me know I was right. Luckily she was ok but, until she left this world, I carried the name of the drugs she was given with me and she never received them again. Bad reactions happen with cats as well as people. But you need to be aware of it to prevent it from happening again. I hope the little dude is feeling better. Arnica I think is the best. At least it works great on cuts and wounds.
