It's all a function of your monitor size and screen resolution. The
rulers you see in Finale are actually a certain number of *pixels*
wide. If you've got a 19 monitor at 1280x960 resolution, a ruler
inch at 100% is smaller than an actual inch.

Programmers don't write code that automatically measures your screen

variable, so writing such code is likely a waste of programming
resources). That's the reason for allowing custom zoom percentages.

It's my opinion that 5, or 6 at a stretch, is about as many verses as

put 4 verses only below the music and then include verses 5 to the end

If it's longer I can't say what would be best, but you might try

One last question: since his files are analytic in nature (Schenker

That could mess up far more than it fixes.

Yes. As I said, the lock systems and note spacing lines are optional.

But does anyone know if you can just drag a Petrucci suitcase of
screen fonts and a Petru ps file into the System/Library/Fonts
folder? I guess he's got nothing to lose by trying that first.

Definitely. If he doesn't mind the appearance of Petrucci, this should
certainly be the first choice. Then he can just run a Finalescript
that opens the files and saves them with something appended to the
filename. This way, he'll have a set of files that won't have to be
converted every time he opens them to print them out or edit them.

I showed him how to change the default font, one file at a time,
 to Maestro or Engraver. But

1) is there a better of faster way to do this?

 Batch treatment with Finalescript.

That Finalescript should read:

batch process folder
//process subdirectories
music font fontname
lock systems
note spacing
save and append _2k6
close

Next, just place all of the desired files in a folder (if some of the
files are in subfolders of that folder, remove the // from the
second line to process all files in the folder tree) and select that
folder as the batch folder-- third button from the right in the
inalescript pallette.

Put the desired font in place of fontname and keep the quotes.

Lock systems and note spacing are optional. I include them since
changing the music font can mess up spacing, so these steps will make
sure that measures-per-system remain the same but new spacing is
applied to account for the change in noteheads.

The next line saves the file with a new name (it adds _2k6 before
the .mus) so that the original files are untouched, and then the
file is closed and the next is opened.

I would definitely recommend making a backup of all files before
running the script on them, just in case anything untoward happens by
chance.

Hope this helps!

may not be immediately obvious in measures other than ones full

When beaming correctly in 3/4 and 6/8 measure, it should be
obvious in which of the two he is. Following Ted Ross-like rules
for beaming and rests should make it clear.

Yes, but what if there are no beams (a half note and a quarter note,
for example)? Also, Finale might make it difficult to ensure correct
beaming, since it will alternate its default beaming between 6/8 and
3/4 in each subsequent measure. That's what adding timesigs together

How would your example be performed differently in 6/8 or 3/4?

However, the notation of it looks like 3/4 to me, and in 6/8 should
probably be dotted quarter tied to eighth, quarter note, which would
 adequately denote the intended subdivision.

Yes, I'll admit that that was a silly example, since it can easily be
adapted to make either signature clear. What about a dotted half?

Also, Finale might make it difficult to ensure correct
beaming, since it will alternate its default beaming between 6/8 and
3/4 in each subsequent measure. That's what adding timesigs together

I don't get this. If you have set Finale to alternate measures of 6/8
and 3/4, but to always show as (whatever you chose), then beaming will
occur automatically to the time signature unless you manually override
it. Isn't that what is wanted?

That's the thing... Don is adapting the 6/8 + 3/4 signature to show
as 6/8 (3/4). However, there's still the underlying signature
addition that means that the default beaming will alternate between
the two. He has indicated that it's not a strict measure-after-measure
alternation, though; the timesig changes are irregular.

Carolyn offered a good suggestion to get around this: have show as
always set to the modified 6/8 + 3/4 and keep the actual timesig for
each section set for the proper beaming.

This is a ludicrous question, seems to me, because there's no way
whatsoever for a performer to perform a dotted half in 3/4 in a way
that sounds rhythmically different from the same value in 6/8.

I wasn't implying that there would be any difference in how it would
be performed. However, the performers would probably like to be
notified in some way whether the conductor will split that measure
into 2 or 3 beats.

It's bloody ridiculous to imagine that such a difference could
possibly make a difference, but if you really wanted to make it
clear, you'd tie two dotted quarter notes. But I expect most
performers would think you were nuts.

I fully agree. Otherwise the argument suggests we should eliminate 2/2,
because there's no way to make a semibreve sound different to one in 4/4.

Not at all; see my comments above. The only reason for even
considering this is that, since the piece in question is alternately
in 6/8 and 3/4, a dotted half note is ambiguous to a person reading
only one part and they won't know what to expect from the conductor.

I'm not suggesting that anything different needs to be done. I'm sure
in many cases that a dotted half on its own would be sufficient;
however, I just meant to provoke thought upon the matter. It is
certainly unwarranted to say that suggesting the composer consider
such issues is bloody ridiculous, and I'm sure there are certain
rare situations in which it might not be bloody obvious.

What, you want Boulez-style indications over every sustained note? If
 there's a regular alternation between 6/8 and 3/4, then a trained monkey
could probably understand what the conductor was doing. Or, come to
think of it, a trained monkey could conduct it

But we're *not* talking about regular alterations here. Also, if you

I think that's an excellent idea. However, the problem with doing a UI
overhaul is that certain people are already used to the musically
illogical placement of features.. we noticed the problem when Show
Active Layer Only changed menus from from View to Options.

If features were totally rearranged, there would be no end of support

changes made all the sense in the world, they could and would be
terribly confusing to users of earlier versions.

I'm not saying that there should be no search for a way to make all
those menus and dialogs more independently discoverable, but that any
such venture should be undertaken with a great deal of thought and

To me, [this] looks like a commitment to the status quo, or mere
stubbornness, or just wanting to argue.

I am in no way just wanting to argue. Please read my entire message,
and reply to it as a whole, rather than applying knee-jerk reactions
to individual statements. I have agreed with Dennis that such a
regrouping is a very good idea, but merely pointing out that it could
create a nightmare for customer support.

 The assumption that *adding*
a new approach always entails completely removing the old method is
 completely unwarranted.

So you want to have Finale include incredibly bloated menus, with
multiple ways to get to each of its plethora of features?

. . . we noticed the problem when Show
Active Layer Only changed menus from from View to Options.

This is a completely different type of issue.

No, it's not. I'm talking merely about the support ramifications for
MakeMusic! when features' discovery paths get changed.

And it seems to me that there oughtn't be any reason not to have such
a menu choice in both locations.

But if you follow that logic to its conclusion, you'll put discovery
paths to each dialog in multiple locations that might seem equally
useful. With every feature accessible from multiple places, there will
be so many choices that *nothing* will be easy to find!

  If features were totally rearranged, . . . .

 Who has proposed that?

I certainly haven't. Just giving an example of a possible scenario.

. . . there would be no end of support
requests from people who just use a few features, and know where they
are, but don't know the rest of the program that well. Even if these
changes made all the sense in the world, they could and would be
terribly confusing to users of earlier versions.

If MakeMusic ported Finale to Linux, would they still support
Windows? I mean, some Windows users wouldn't find it easy switching
to Linux, so they need to be accomodated somehow!

 How stupid does *that* sound?

Pretty darn stupid. Because there is nothing in your hypothetical
scenario that even approaches the situation I'm describing.

I'm not saying that there should be no search for a way to make all
those menus and dialogs more independently discoverable, but that any
such venture should be undertaken with a great deal of thought and
  consideration for its ramifications.

Well, I'm sure Dennis was proposing that such a revision be done in
the most stupid and confusing way possible. That's certainly *my*
 thinking on the subject.

I'm not in any way trying to imply that anybody so far has made any
improper judgments or confusing suggestions. I'm merely pointing out
the potential ramifications of feature discovery juggling.

Don't assume that things people say are automatically atupid, David.
Try to figure out where posters are coming from before making such
assumptions and totally lambasting a point that hasn't even been made.

Bloody hell! Either we do away with silly and obsolete and outdated
menu options, risking the wrath of those who've got into the habit of
finding the same tool in the same place since Finale '74, OR we're

 I don't get it.

I'm just saying that including a feature at multiple points in the
menus will add to the number of choices in those menus, therefore
requiring the user to look through more menu options while attemptng
to find the desired function.

Have you ever written software? Or designed a web page?

I've not actually written software, but I've developed it (and left
the actual coding to those who knew the language). And I've written a
few simple web pages.

Actually, that latter is a good one.

Consider a CONTACT link on a web page. Most websites put it on every
single page, and the link goes to a single page. Is that confusing?
Of course not! What would be confusing was if you could only get to
the CONTACT page by navigating to a single one of the many pages on a
 website.

Yes, but the CONTACT link is generally in the same place on each page.
The user can find it easily, and does not have to wade through a
different group of options on each page to discover it.

Some things belong in only one location, some work well in multiple
 contexts.

I'm not disputing that. I'm just thinking out loud here; I haven't
recommended or expressed preference for any one course of action.
(Well, I suppose I just did in my reply to Owain, opting for the
complete user-oriented overhaul.)

I'm just thinking about the users, and their ease in discovering the
options they need, and whether that ease (or lack thereof) has an
effect on the number of support calls MakeMusic! has to field. I admit
that a complete re-do of the UI has the potential to draw a great
number of support requests, but it would almost be better to do it all
at once than draw it out over a number of years.

Again, I'm not arguing that anybody's approach here in UI redesign is
wrongm just considering the ease-of-use resulting from the various
options discussed.

[Finale] Community consultation; know your tools (was: RTFM, no. It shouldn't be necessary.)

2006-01-05 Thread Brad Beyenhof
Might I remind everyone (including David) that consulting a community
like this is certainly a way to circumvent bad documentation and/or
unintuitive UI? In less than 10 minutes from his original post, three
people had responded with the correct information.

Additionally, it is a very good idea to know your tools, and to
explore them completely detached from any work you'll need to do with
them. I've rarely (if ever) used Preserve Original Notes when
transposing, but I knew it was there because I've spent a good deal of
time pawing through the menus and dialogs of Finale just to know
what's in them.

You don't think a carpenter's training only involves him (or her)
using a saw when he is actually building a table, do you? No; the
carpenter-in-training uses the saw to cut random blocks of wood around
the shop, just for the practice and to understand the use of his
tools. Once the carpenter has reached a level of mastery, his first
thought on encountering a problem is not to consult a book, but to
remember what he knows through experience.

It should be the same with us. If you've been using a tool
professionally for any length of time, you should know what it's
capable of (for the most part). I'm not claiming to understand every
nook and cranny of Finale; I never will, nor do I want to. I'm also
not saying that the UI doesn't need a redesign, but users of the
current version should be relatively familiar with its workings but
willing to ask for help when necessary.

To be honest, this whole thread seems to have been started by David's
annoyance that others knew better than he how to find a particular
feature of the program. Sure it my be bad UI, but that doesn't mean
that we should throw up our hands in disgust and refuse to accept the
fact that this is the way it is. When consulting the list for
assistance, we should take note of the solutions suggested and move on
(a bit wiser, hopefully). If there's an easy way to do it of which we
weren't previously aware, that does not give us license to rage on and
on at each other and at the developers.

I'm sorry for the length and I apologize if anybody is offended by
these remarks; this reply has just been building up inside me for the
last couple of days. Feel free to hit the DELETE key and move on...

Who is raging at each other or at the developers? I may be annoyed at

order of magnitude more hostile than anything I raised in responses
 to his posts.

This comment was in no way related to you, David. I refer again to the
uncordial conduct displayed by others who took the usual intelligent
discourse in this forum and fouled it up with unnecessary hateful
language.

Why are you responding in this fashion to what seems to me to have
been a perfectly genial discussion until this afternoon when *someone
else* chose to push the level of discourse into the trenches?

I don't know what you mean by in this fashion, but please note that
I included a disclaimer to the effect that I was merely venting my
frustrations with the unyielding back-and-forth certain list members
were having. I was not pointing a finger at you, David (except in one
sentence for which I have apologized above), but merely being appalled
at the hostility being demonstrated by certain list members that is in
no way warranted in this sort of forum.

Again, I apologize for any offense; my previous message was fairly
hastily written and I got one of my more important facts wrong. The
fact still remains that the level of disagreement has surely gotten
out of hand through the course of the thread, and it is this that has
made me as exasperated as I currently am.

Well, it's possible to open the Page Setup for each file in sequence
with this script:

batch process folder
execute menu item page setup
save
close

Granted, you will have to manually make the change to each file, but
you won't have to manually open the dialog box, or manually open the
files. The script will be paused until you click OK in the dialog, so
you can do as many changes as you need to each file's Page Setup.

This same work also calls for fixed point sizes for rehearsal numbers,
so I have to manually enlarge them instead of allowing them to be
proportionally resized in the extraction process.

Once I extract the parts I can safely ignore the Parts score and work
from then on with just the original score when making corrections and
changes. However, creating a separate score just for extraction has
always made things much easier.

Item #4 (Miscellaneous) may include stuff like moving the titles

nuisance to move them around separately in each part.

In my earlier reply I neglected to mention this, which is a big issue

BurnAgain allows you to continually re-burn new info, but you actually

I've actually seen this in action at music educator conventions. The

No... when you change music spacing, the next thing to do is always to

i played around with the quant settings in the import-dialog but didn't
 get it.

I recently did a MIDI transcription of a score with a bunch of odd
tuplets like this, and Finale is not particularly good at doing these
things all by itself. It sometimes helps to play with the Quantization
settings (after the whole file has been imported) and then
retranscribe just the section with the odd tuplet. However, you can
only retranscribe full measures, so sometimes using a really sensitive
Quant setting to notate the tuplet correctly will mess up the rhythms
in the rest of the bar. If you make sure all the 'note on' and 'note
off' messages have been precisely quantized in the MIDI file before
the import this will work better.

But the short answer is: good luck... this isn't one of Finale's strong points.

Well, this isn't a vocal staff. It's actually for a method book, and
it's a duet, and the author is putting in lyrics on the exercises
whose songs have them. So I'm treating them as instrumental staves

(which, in a sense, they are).

I do agree that vocal staves shouldn't have connected barlines, though.

You'll have to add an extra measure, so that there's a barline in
between the first half and the last half of that bar. Make both
measures 1/4 and hide the time signatures via the measure tool (or you
can make them both 1/4 measures that display as 2/4).

Then, if you care about measure numbers, there are two things you might do:
1) In Finale 2006 (which I believe you are using, since the background
is not pure white), use the Measure Tool to uncheck Include in
Measure Numbering on the second half bar.
2) In Fin2k5 and earlier, define a measure number region to include
measure 1 through the first half bar, and another region to include
the bar after the second half bar through the end. The second region
will have to have the first number in region offset by -1 so that
the second 1/4 bar will not be given a number.

I'm not aware of anything that's actually free (except that certain
soundcards have a Speaker Output in the driver that can be used to
record any sound the computer makes), but TotalRecorder is a great
shareware solution.

Re: [Finale] Finale Acting Weird After Upgrading to Tiger

2005-09-17 Thread Brad Beyenhof
Jacki:

It's possible that you've unchecked Save Preferences When Quitting
FInale in the Program Options. This would do the same things you
describe, but rather than turn it on I would suggest that you instead
get all the settings exactly the way you like them and then go to File
Save Special Save Preferences. I personally prefer to keep my
preferences in one known-good state instead of having Finale re-save
them every time I exit the program, but YMMV if you like to change the
preferences around a lot.

Hope this helps!

if so, how do you fix it?! What's going on is I no longer get the Launch
Window upon starting up Finale, even though I have checked it in the prefs.
Also, my recently opened files are not showing up AT ALL - when I choose
Open Recent - it says there are no recently used files. I called
MakeMusic and they had me trash my prefs and start over, but it did not fix
the problem - they said they hadn't heard of it happening before. It's no
big deal really, but it is a mild nuisance! I liked those features before

Contact me via email first, so the favor doesn't get duplicated. :)

This is actually in the Options menu now.

There is also another stupid bug.- I wished to erase all the chords
and only the chords , so that was all I ticked off leaving everything else
un-ticked. So what happened? It also erased all my measure numbers make it
necessary to enter them all again.

I've never had any problems in Mass Edit, going to 'Clear Items' in
the Mass Edit menu, selecting 'Entries' and checking only 'Chords.'
This has always left measure numbers alone.

Are you selecting the measures before attempting to clear the chords?
Try using 'Select All' (command-A or ctrl-A) on the piece before
attempting to clear the chords.

Now if FinaleScript could change the paper size in the Page Setup menu...

There's no way to actually *change settings* via FinaleScript, but
this ingenious script (provided by Karen Guthery) makes the process a
lot easier:

//process all open docs
batch process folder
execute menu item page setup
//print
save
//you can insert 'save append *' or similar here if you want to keep
the original documents intact
close

Effectively, it opens the Page Setup dialog for every item in a folder
in turn (or every open doc, if you change the commenting), so all you
have to do is modify the page size. This is much better than opening
every file individually, invoking the Page Setup dialog manually, and
changing page size. There's still a manual step involved, but it cuts
out a lot of the tedium involved in changing the page size for a batch
of already-created documents.

That's incorrect. Logic, for example, uses -64 through +64.

I don't get all this talk of -64 to 64. If there are only 128 values,
doesn't one of the bounds have to have an absolute value of 63? -64 to
64, with zero included as center, is 129 values. I've always seen it
as -63 to 64.

Nope, that's not it. I'm running Panther, which (as you know) has no
Spotlight to speak of.

To be honest (and to go off the beaten path a bit), I'm not altogether
certain that I even *want* Tiger. Quicksilver is better than
Spotlight, even though I'm stuck at a version Blacktree codenamed
Pariah due to my upgrade lag, and Konfabulator is just about the
same as Dashboard.

I know there's probably a lot of under-the-hood sorts of things (there
always are), but in terms of features I've got a couple of the best of
them already through third-party freeware apps.

No... do you have a reference (preferably online) where I can read

Interesting... I just listened to the recent interview on the BBC's

I uninstalled ClearDock and APE; it didn't help my 2k6 experience. The
Unsanity website mentions the fact that APE can slow down application
*loading*, but it says that once applications are running there is no
speed decrease.

In any case, I found a standalone program to remove the dock
background; it's called TransparentDock:

I'll check again tomorrow when I'm in the office, though. I may be
 remembering my memory usage incorrectly.

I quit *everything* except for Finale (well, everything in the Dock,
anyway... background things like Quicksilver, Konfabulator, and the
underlying OS stuff were still running), deleted the .plist Darcy
mentioned, and I still have unusable lag with dragging and selecting
in 2k6.

In a blank document it's not too bad (1/4 to 1/2 second), but in a
medium-sized concert band score it's up to a second of delay with
*every* action. Any more suggestions? Has anybody hit this sort of lag
in Tiger? Has anybody *not* hit this sort of lag in Panther? I'd like
to find out what's different between my machine and the machines that
are running 2k6 without problems, and I suspect it's probably the OS
version that's the problem.
