Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: beanboy89 (beanboy89) Assigned to: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Summary: Menu visibility issue on Windows Vista Initial Comment: Hello. On Windows Vista, I am encountering a problem with Gaim's menus. On all dropdown menus in the program, highlighted (selected) menu entries are white, which makes the text on the menu of the selected menu item invisible. I am using Gaim 2.0.0 Beta 5 and GTK+ Runtime 2.10.6 on Windows Vista RC1. Screenshot of problem attached. Thanks, Billy Miller -- Comment By: jrseney (jrseney) Date: 2007-02-06 22:50 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1702572 Originator: NO This is a universal bug across GTK+ on vista, and I have experienced it in Gimp and Inkscape also. Any way to change the GTK theme manually to avoid the bug? -- Comment By: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Date: 2007-01-02 19:40 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=325843 Originator: NO This is a bug in GTK+ (I believe it is specifically in the MS-Windows (WIMP) theme). Initial Comment: I have 3 accounts signed on - AIM, Yahoo!, and GTalk. Generally only AIM is used. Tabs are displayed on the left of the chat window. My friend who is also seeing this leak also has left tabs and mostly uses AIM, although not for chat rooms. My first tab is an AIM chat room that is on my buddy list with an alias. If i alt tab to the window, Private Bytes as displayed by Process Explorer goes up 24KB. Every time i type a keystroke, including backspace, memory under Private Bytes goes up 12 - 24KB. Gaim 2b6 regularly gets to 500megs private/virtual before quitting it/crashing/killing it. I JUST tried changing tabs to Top instead of Left (which I hate, you get drastically fewer tabs that way) and restarting gaim, and memory doesn't seem to be growing like before. Closed the window, switched to tabs on Left, opened chat back up. Memory started growing again at every keystroke. Went up to 30 megs from 24 or 26. Closed the window, switched to Top tabs. Buddy icons do not need to be shown, but will show the graphics corruption immediately. If no buddy icons is set, resizing from the bottom, left, or right of the window will corrupt the tabs. Window appears to have corrupt tab on open anyway. When there is multiple tabs, the only part of the tab that will corrupt is the X button when the mouse hovers over it. Note: this does not seem to affect tab placements of top, left, or right. -- >Comment By: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Date: 2007-02-10 09:47 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=325843 Originator: NO The following bug report has been created: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=399253 -- Comment By: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Date: 2007-02-10 09:47 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=325843 Originator: NO This is not a Gaim bug, but a bug in GTK+, the widget toolkit used by Gaim. Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Steven Scott (progoth) Assigned to: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Summary: HUGE memory leak in beta6 - tabs on left bug? Opened chat, memory stopped increasing. Noticed memory had dropped down to 26. -- >Comment By: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Date: 2007-02-22 10:45 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=325843 Originator: NO There hasn't been a GTK+ release that includes this fix. Since 2.0.0 beta 6 I've had problems with the tabbar of users in the chatwindow. The bar shows the username and a cross to the right to close the chatwindow. In the right part of the tab the usericon and protocolicon (the green MSN icon in my case) are displayed, in strange ways. When hovering with the mouse it changes, but it doesn't always repair. Sometimes it seems to repair when alt-tabbing to anther window and back, but not always. Sometimes even my own usericon, my current smilieset, etc are used here. I added some screenshots as my story may not be so clear.. I would very much like to help, to debug this, but I don't know how. Split right in half I get what appears to be copies of some of the graphics located in the window duplicated over and over (messenger icon, smiley, font adjuster icons). Category: None Group: None >Status: Closed Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Steven Scott (progoth) Assigned to: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Summary: HUGE memory leak in beta6 - tabs on left bug? Opened chat, memory stopped increasing. Noticed memory had dropped down to 26. -- Comment By: JiveMasterT (jivemastert) Date: 2007-02-22 13:56 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1363164 Originator: NO Daniel, you are the friggen man! After OKing the error, it had moved one folder up with no problems, asking to save the file in the parent directory. The file name field was empty, but that is reported in another bug and I have verified there is no relation. You have to focus another window, then focus the chat window again to get it back. This is on Windows XP Pro, Gaim 2.0 beta 5. Steps to reproduce: 1. Begin a chat with another user. 2. Category: None Group: None >Status: Closed Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Noah Richards (omegahamlet) Assigned to: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Summary: New conversation windows spawn underneath taskbar Initial Comment: Gaim version: 2.0.0beta2 Platform: Windows (XP) Steps to Reproduce: 1) Place taskbar on top of screen 2) Start gaim 3) Open new conversation window Window now appears partially obscured by taskbar. In windows, if the taskbar is placed at the top of the screen, new conversation windows spawn at 0,0, which is underneath the taskbar. This is actually more of an issue with gtk on windows, but it would be nice if gaim would work around this. It could be fixed (I believe) by placing a call to gtk_window_set_position in gtconv.c: Add (somewhere after gtk_window_new in GaimGtkWindow * gaim_gtk_conv_window_new()): gtk_window_set_position(GTK_WINDOW(win->window), GTK_WIN_POS_CENTER); This will position new windows in the center of the screen. Possibly not what the desired outcome is, but it would at least keep the window from being covered by a taskbar on the top or left-hand side of the screen. -- Comment By: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Date: 2006-02-27 09:46 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=325843 This is not a Gaim bug, but a bug in GTK+, the widget toolkit used by Gaim. Status: Offline Found Problem: When Double clicking on a user in the buddy list, the Chat window comes up automatically taking the focus away from the Buddy List and pushing the Buddy list behind it. (normal behavior) If you then go back to the buddy window and double click on a user that would be covered by the previous Chat Window (arbitrary window placement of chat window over buddy list) - (because the users share Chat Windows via tabbed windows), the Status message occasionally becomes permanent and cannot be closed without exiting all Gaim window apps. After playing around with it, I found that the Status message will go away *only* when the buddy list is browsed again (mouseover event on buddy list). It appears that the Chat window takes the focus away from the Buddy List before the Status Window is closed. Apparently the Status window is closed by the Buddy List mouseover events which are not available when it loses focus. Resolution: Put a timer on the Status Window so that it goes away after 3-5 seconds whether or not Duplicate: 1) Open Buddy List 2) Double click on buddy 3) Move Window to cover the Buddy icon on buddy list, but not cover the entire Buddy List 4) Go back to Buddy List and double click on previous buddy several times until it occurs 5) Minimize all Windows - Status Window will not be minimized 6) Open Buddy list to remove Status Window Very Annoying. -- Comment By: Daniel Atallah (datallah) Date: 2006-05-19 09:58 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=325843 This is not a Gaim bug, but a bug in GTK+, the widget toolkit used by Gaim. (radeon x800 gfx CATALYST® Version 06.5) Is there a way to lock the windows, be it file transfer windows, chat windows, or setup windows, to the main monitor ? The problem for me is the fact that the windows align in the top left corner of my second monitor. The windows are located outside the screens borders, so I cannot drag it into position. I have to alt+space and move it that way. It's the same with all my contacts, and with file transfer windows on each individual contact when I open them. Even thoguh one is moved, the next one will show outside the screen again. I had some issues with this in previous versions of gaim as well. I hope there is a way to remedy this. btw, 2.0.0beta3 is much much better than 1.5.0 in regards to the ICQ spamming issue. It also has a much nicer feel to it. The key is the one that is right next to Backspace on the left (I don't know what it is called.) The physical keyboard has a english (am) layout but I have set it to use Swedish layout. This only happens when the keyboard layout is set to Swedish, when it is set to English it is OK. Very often when I am supposed to hit Backspace key I hit the wrong key and gaim will hang. This happens several times a day for me and is quite annoying. And when I forget I have the Swedish keyboard layout set and try to do a = or + it will hang. I'd be very happy if this was fixed :) The machine that I am using where this is 100% reproducable is a Windows 2003 Server Std Ed. Initial Comment: I enjoy having my taskbar docked to the top of the screen in Windows. When a new chat window spawns for chat, Gaim puts the window at the top edge of the screen underneath my (locked) taskbar. I then have to right click on its taskbar entry, choose MOVE, and arrow it down. Most other programs seem to know that when the taskbar is docked (and locked) at the top of the screen, the highest spawn point is just below the taskbar. -- Comment By: xaerius (xaerius) Date: 2006-02-22 13:32 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1457400 Sorry, I gave the wrong URL for that plugin. Initial Comment: Windows Runtime Error: Pango-ERROR **: file shape.c: line 75 (pango_shape): assertion failed: (glyphs->num_glyphs > 0) After more testing I've found that I can reproduce this bug only in IMs that are between my WinXP PC (wingaim2beta2) and a mac (iChat). I'm using the AIM protocol, updated gtk Situation 1: Logging enabled, HTML format (from the previous conversation, irrelevant at actual load time) Show format on incoming messages enabled (from the previous conversation, irrelevant at actual load time) History plugin turned on These settings will cause it to crash the moment a chat window is opened with that person if a previous conversation was saved in the logs. This is presumably while trying to load the html log file. I've attached an example html file that causes a crash for me if loaded from history. Situation 2: Show format on incoming messages enabled Crashes upon the receipt of a message from a mac user, regardless of what they're saying, if history is enabled or disabled, or logging is enabled or disabled. The message still makes it into the logs, formatted. It also manages to send auto-replies before the rendering is finished and the problem is encountered (they also appear in the chat logs). Example of that is attached as well. This situation is not universal though, at times it works and I can't seem to isolate the exact cause. I'm hoping somebody can confirm that this results in a crash for them as well. 2006-03-04.161253.html - crash from logs (1) 2006-03-05.233450.html - crash on receipt (2) (See also Bug 1365939 for the relevant backtrace. The consequence was that gaim started to work really slow and ignored my clicks in the Frienly name window (busy mouse icon). I've seen that it ate more and more of my memory (got to ~110 MB at the end) and the same situation was present even after it connected to that IRC network. The Frienly name window was so frozen and then I tryed to disconnect from the IRC network again (it took a while, because gaim responded really slow) and shortly after that gaim crashed. I don't know which of this things were critical, but I am sending the debug file if it is of any use. And my personal opinion: Make the god damn gtk for Windows faster.. Depending on what is done to the GtkWindow (I don't recall the specifics) before it is actually set to be visible, it will either use the Windows "default placement" (which *should* be on-screen) or it will be at (0,0). I do remember that if the window is set visible immediately on creation, it will be placed correctly (but of course that is not a viable thing to do because it appears as a tiny square and then grows as the various parts are added). I briefly looked the GTK+ code that does this a while ago, but it was pretty complicated and not obvious why this was happening. -- Comment By: Richard Laager (rlaager) Date: 2006-05-02 03:09 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=156487 Hmm... Yes, the GTK version is different between the 2.0.0 beta 3 and the 1.5.0. But I've tried the latest GTK+ on 1.5.0 and it still works well. I assume it is not the GTK version but more of a problem that Gaim 2.0.0 beta 3 has. -- Comment By: Richard Laager (rlaager) Date: 2006-05-02 02:41 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=156487 Gaim is not likely to handle this natively, as it's generally an X application, not a win32 one. On the X side of things, we have window managers that handle window placement. On Windows, the applications are expected to handle it. This is either a Windows bug, a GTK+ bug, or a case where it would be really nice if GTK+ had better default handling of windows on Windows (no pun intended). You might want to look in the plugin tracker. There's a plugin for Gaim on Windows that saves the position of conversation windows, etc. -- Comment By: Jason T. (jaedth) Date: 2006-05-01 01:22 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1513840 Addendum: This bug is also apparent in Windows XP SP 2 when dual displays are enabled. If one display is larger then the left most display and the leftmost display is orientated to the bottom edge of display 2. In my case : Display 1: 1024x1280 Display 2: 2560 x 1600. Opening a new conversation window will place the window above the top of display 1. As far as I can tell no way exists to move the conversation window lower or re size with the keyboard. (Though I will admit I am not fully versed at windows). This is not a critical issue but really rather annoying. Workarounds: A: Orientate the left most display to be on the top edge of the larger display. B: Disable the left most display when opening conversation windows. C: Make the larger display the leftmost display. Suggestions: Make new conversation placement a user settable option and do not allow placement in areas that are not physically displayed. Or simply place new conversation windows in the exact middle of screen. Tha

I run multiple monitors at different resolutions. My secondary monitor is on the left with a smaller resolution than my right hand monitor. The desktops are aligned at the bottom so there is some 'dead space' above the second monitor on the left. As GAIM trys to put message windows at the top left of the screen they go straight into this dead space and you can't see them. I can only get to them by right clicking on their taskbar entry and selecting 'move' and using the cursor keys to move them down. Anyone know a work around for this? ------ You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=680472&aid=1182313&group_id=235 - This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML. Version-specific dependencies on win32 should be a big "stop sign" in the installer. Perhaps have a little checking routine displaying an alert and exiting non-zero, when 2.8.x is installed? In previous versions, they sometimes come up too quickly, prevening me from clicking on a buddy. The positioning seems better now, or at least I'm having trouble reproducing it. At other times when the buddy list somehow loses focus (alt+tab) while a tooltip is being displayed the tip remains on top of the current window. In either previous versions or difficult-to-reproduce circumstances I remember this requiring giving the buddy list its focus back in order to get rid of it. How about an option to disable or change the delay on the tooltips? The weirdness that happens sometimes might just be a windows GTK thing, but the option to disable them would still be nice. -- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=680472&aid=1069635&group_id=235 - This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML. I just downloaded ver 1.1.1 for Windows (I'm running on Win2K), and registered my ICQ account. I IM'd someone on my buddy list and ran into this bug, namely that no text position caret showed in the send text box control. The characters I typed showed up fine. I just noticed that I get a caret after typing some characters, however that was not happening before. It seems that there is never a caret in an empty send textbox (I expect one when I "activate" the control by clicking in it, so I know where the next thing I type will go). However once the IM window has been minimized and restored, it seems that a caret will appear once something is typed in the send textbox. There also appear to be issues with the wrong mouse cursor displaying (ie it's a I bar over the menu and an arrow over the conversation text) but that should be another bug. -- Comment By: Luke Schierer (lschiere) Date: 2005-01-02 23:37 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=28833 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=137551 -- Comment By: mlippert (mlippert255) Date: 2005-01-02 22:32 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1187704 Sorry it is a duplicate but I did try to search for an existing bug before reporting this one. Category: None Group: gtk bug #107320 >Status: Closed Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Hal DeVore (haldevore) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Tooltips not closing Initial Comment: Using GAIM 1.1.0. Tooltips on the Buddy List (for instance the popup yellow box that shows a buddy's status) do not close if the focus is moved away from the Buddy List window using the keyboard. For example: Start with the Buddy List and at least one non-GAIM window open. Give the buddy list the focus and move the mouse over a buddy's entry. The tooltip will pop up with the buddy's status. Without moving the mouse press Alt+Tab to change the focus to the non-GAIM window. Move the mouse around in the non-GAIM window. Note that the tooltip stays open until the mouse passes back over the buddy list or until the buddy list is given the focus. Solution: tooltip windows should be closed when the buddy list loses the focu -- Comment By: Baris cicek (camcorder) Date: 2004-12-11 07:28 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=494022 I'm using gtk 2.4.14 and I have no such a problem. It might be fixed in gtk+ already. -- Comment By: rbowes (rbowes) Date: 2004-12-10 16:19 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1162686 It's a problem with GTK, not with Gaim. Search the bug list, it's been posted a lot. -- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=680472&aid=1083165&group_id=235 - This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML. If I double click on a buddy to open a coversation window, the mouse cursor immediately moves into the conversation window, and the tool tip stays visible on top of all windows. This is for Win32 Gaim 1.02 -- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=680472&aid=1068190&group_id=235 - This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML. When the compact flash is taken out and I start the gaim program. I get a error about there not being a disk in the drive. If I hit continue everything works ok. Thanks Adam P.S. I used to have a bug while closing that popped up errors about reading the memory. It looks like that has been fixed.
