Re: [Audyssey] Dice Roller was guess the number game
Hello, The minimum dice sizes would be 4 6 8 10 12 20 and 100. 2 and 3 would also be useful. If it were to be really nice, it would also have the option of rolling multiple dice with the ability to view each of the dice individually. If you really wanted to get fancy, you could have multiple dice of multiple sizes. The first visual dice rolling program which was explained to me had all of the above. basically, the dice were shown in a grid so you could see the individual numbers, all the dice of each size added, and all the rolled dice added together. Many years ago when I was attempting programming, I wrote a program like this where you selected all of your requirements at the beginning including any number of sides you wished and then the results were given to you. It was written in C back in 1986 for a programming course (I have forgotten almost all of the programming because I never used it). We created a simulated random number generator function which used many fairly complex mathematical equations and had the program access the computer's clock for the seed number. I then used mathematical equations to convert the percentage number in to the proper number of sides for each dice. I am sure my code was atrocious, but it worked and I received a good grade for the course. Phil Vlasak wrote: Hi Jim, Could you turn your guess the number game to a simple dice roller? It would roll one die and you could specify how many sides. and the output would be using SAPI. That's exactly what I'm saying. It had a great deal of potential if only it had been better handled. But even if it had been the manual wasn't exactly up to date, so there was another problem right there. And now if you go over to their forums you find they've become nothing more than a den of spam bots and things like that. Homer: Hey, uh, could you go across the street and get me a slice of pizza? It would have been nice to be able to whip up a quick copy of Frogs and Flies, Adventure, whatever using a tool like that, but being a student project it had no commercial funding or dedicated people to maintain it. They didn't even release it as open source so the community could have updated it ourselves. So it was pretty much a big waste of time and energy downloading it. Too bad because it actually did have a good design concept, and initially sounded very promising. Bryan Peterson wrote: I'd love to see an audio version of Berzerk or Adventure or even Frogs and Flies, all games for the Atari 2600. In fact those were three projects I'd planned to attempt using the Audio Game Maker when it was released two years ago, but let's not even get started on what a fiasco that turned out to be. It had potential certainly, I'm not arguing that, but the bugs that were left unsquashed made it all but impossible to get the most out of the program. And it didn't help that the program was a student project for a gaming class and once the semester was over the project was pretty much scrapped once there was something for us to download. Needless to say though I did attempt to create both Frogs and Flies and Adventure, with a very few relatively modern touches thrown in (namely a few additional enemies and hazzards), I was able to get neither the dragons nor the frogs, flies and crocodiles to behave properly. Heck, I couldn't even make the player behave properly. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. You can use it to look at what programs are in the startup point on your windows menue, and also check the add/remove programs list to see what's happening. I'm currently trying this online text-based game called Dragon Realms. I'm having trouble with it though, cause I'm totally blind and I need to be able to read what I'm doing in a battle, but I can't because the messages from the monsters attacking me go by to fast and I can't keep up. I was wondering if their was way to make this better for me, I really love the game, I used to play games like final fantasy 11 and world of warcraft which weren't all that accessible, and then I discovered this game and it's much more ccessible except for the minor inconvientses, which why I come to this list, I need help!!! You can probably right click the link for the .sal file and click save target as. Well, I was just about to send a message with instructions on how to use simutronics games with vipmud, since I posted about this a few months ago. Unfortunately, I seem to no longer have a play.net account, which is where dragonrealms and gemstone IV are located! grin But anyway, here is a copy of a message I sent to the list regarding logging into gemstone IV with vipmud. I know the question is regarding dragonrealms, but I am sure that other than the difference in host names, the instructions would be the same. The below message talks about logging into the website as if you were going to login with the Wizard client. What you will want to do though is download the .sal file that comes up when you click on the go play link. The only way I was able to download this .sal file without Internet explorer trying to launch the wizard front end, was to use fire fox. That is why in the below message, I refer to firefox. You could probably stop the wizard frontend from launching if you disable active X for the dragonrealms.net site. Use the below at your own risk. Beings that it is the Christmas Holiday, I will be away from my computer for most of the next few days. I would suggest that you do a search in the play.net forums regarding logging in with a telnet client, that was where I originally got the instructions. Basicly, what you will need to do is get the userKey from the .sal file of your character. This is how simutronics keeps people from logging in for free. When you use vipmud to connect to whatever the host and port are, you will not see anything when you connect. This is normal. You will need to paste in the user key into vipmud's window and press enter. Again, you will see or hear nothing. You then want to type FE/JAVA all in caps as shown and press enter. You should then be good to go. Again, this is for gemstone IV but it will work with whatever dragonrealms uses as their host. Rest assured, Simutronics muds including dragon realms can be played with vipmud, at least, they could be played a few months ago. grin Jeremy Begin message. Ok, I managed to just get into gemstone iv with VipMud. What I had to do was use firefox to log into my account. When I clicked the go play button, a page came up saying that if my browser didn't launch using active x to click here. When I did, firefox brought a file save dialog with my character's .sal file, ie, grogrond.sal. I then saved it to disc, and opened it in notepad, and copied the key to the clipboard, and used the host of prime.gs4.game.play.net and the port of 4900 entered into the host and port sections in vipMud. Then, I pasted the key from the clipboard and hit enter. I then typed FE/JAVA and hit enter. And I am now in! - Original Message - From: William L. [Audyssey] The future of Blastbay Studios
Hi all, With the success of Q9, I am much encouraged to make new games in the near future. Now I wish to put the question out, what games would you like to see? I plan to create mainly adventure games with a plot and characters, coupled together with the same audio work and fast paced game play that you saw in Q9. Do you wish for more sidescrollers, or is 3d the next step do you think? I would not wish to create a full 3d environment like in Shades of Doom where you spin around in degrees as I personally find these rather difficult to navigate and end up spending more time trying to remember where I've been and where I am supposed to go next, rather than enjoying the game. So I would adopt the method where you sidestep, moving one step in each direction for each press of either of the four arrow keys. Would you folks like to see something like this, or do you all want more sidescrollers? I'm sorry that this is off topic, and I hope no one takes offense, but I need help, badly Heres the problem. I left today, and shut down my system, things were working fine then, however, when I came back, something went horribly wrong, I turned on the system, and it booted up like normal. The windows logon screen came up, but it took forever to do anything. Here is the real puzzling part, the window went away, and the desktop never loaded, however, if I push the power button on my PC, the logoff screen shows up, and it shuts down like normal. I've tried rebooting, I've tried to reboot even in safe mode, nothing works, it just keeps doing the same thing. I've even tried unplugging it and plugging it back in, although that really probably served no perpose. As it stands, right now I'm still having this issue, and am at a loss as to what to do. Re: [Audyssey] The future of Blastbay Studios
Hi Philip. Q9 was great, but I'd love to see something more complex in a side scroller with actual vertical movement, --- climbing ladders, jumping from ledge to ledge, dropping down holes to lower levels etc.Something which makes the game more of a maze to navigate than just a streight walk along road. i'd love to see side scrollers with more dimention, extra weapons, some strategic attacks etc too, maybe even keys and doors or similar puzle elements. None of these features are in any way unique to 3D games, and a more complex audio side scroller with them would be great, particularly if it could include the great sound work and music you've already shown in both Q9 and Kringle crash. Of course there are other sorts of games we might do with, for example a shoot em up game not! based on space invaders, an action rpg game similar to zelda, which has magic to use , different weapons etc but uses fast action combat and bosses, but from what you ssay of likign side scrollers and action, a complex side scroller sounds like it'd best sute your frame of mind, sinse obviously you've got to like the game too. just my thoughts and personal opinions here. I prefer a sidescrollers, especially with Many elements of many kinds, like castlevania, sidescroler with RPG elements. I want see a beat em up game, like old arcade tittles, like final fight, etc etc, or fighting game, like a fighting force, where you can go on four directions, noth, east, west, south, little 3d, but without turning your character arrond you. I didn't like a total 3d games, like shades of doom etc, i am maybe little retro fan. lol I with more great games in next year, new games with adventure elements, good scenario, many puzles to solve, etc etc. I believe the next year will be much better in audio games world. Re: [Audyssey] The future of Blastbay Studios
Hi Philip, That's a good question. As for myself I've always been a big fan of FPS type games such as Sarah and Shades of Doom. Never really had any issues or problems with them. However, as I've found out when discussing my own future plans with people I've got quite a lot of requests not to go full 3d FPS for exactly the same reasons you mentioned below. Many blind gamers have no sense of direction in those games, find them difficult to play, and end up getting frustrated with them. So creating these types of accessible games could turn out to be a major turn off for some gamers. However, I personally believe they are more realistic, are better games, and is the way of the future for accessible games. We simply don't have that many high quality FPS games such as Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Halo, Soldier of Fortune, Star Trek Elite Force, etc. I'd love to see these kinds of games, but can't really find too many audio game developers and players that shares my more mainstream desire for these kinds of games. That is probably more to do with the fact I was sighted for many years, got hooked on those kinds of games before going blind, and most of the people on the list don't share the same experiences I have. As a result they don't have the same vision or desire I have to see all out FPS style games with true 3-dimensional game worlds. By 3d I don't mean just audio but a game world with an actual 3d layout with the ability to go north, south, east, west, up, or down as needed. A World with true 3d objects and so on. We haven't anything like this, but since you have said you don't want to do a full 3d environment this is all mute anyway. Since it seams you really want to create 2d games I'd say just stick with the side-scrollers. They are easy to create, many blind gamers find them easy to play, and you've had success with Q9. I've seen similar interest with Mysteries of the Ancients. Although, I'd love to create something other than a side-scroller many gamers constantly tell me how well they like the game, they would hate it if I didn't keep the game as a side-scroller, etc so I've concluded side-scrollers are quite popular with our customers. Re: [Audyssey] The future of Blastbay Studios
Hi Dark, Yes, in deed. Philip has only scratched the surface of potential when it comes to the types of side-scrollers he could create. There are several side-scrollers I can think of such as Double Dragon, Megaman, Legend of Kage, Castlevania, Prince of Persia, you name it Philip could use as a rough template for a new side-scroller. Just because a game is 2d doesn't mean it has to be a simple walk right, beat up some enemies, jump a few pits, type of game. It can get quite involved as the NES and Super NES games clearly proved in their day. Megaman I think is our best example of a killer side-scroller. each level is different in terms of hazards, enemies, special weapons, bosses, you name it. When visiting iceman's world you have to avoid robots firing freeze weapons, avoid falling through ice, avoid snowballs, and other traps like that. In fireman's world you have to jump over lava pits, avoid falling fireballs, freeze walls of fire, as well as kick fireman's robot troops butts. I have to say I loved Megaman, and it was the rave of the late 80's. It was just so cool. Anyway, I'm just saying this to agree with you that a side-scroller need not just go from left to right. It needs a bit of maze and puzzle element to it as well as some level specific traps and enemies. In Mysteries of the Ancients, for example, I introduce traps as you advance through the game levels and some enemies such as the wolves gain the ability to breath fire and skeletons can throw knives. Same enemies, of course, but are a bit harder and tougher to take down than their counterparts on the first few levels. Re: [Audyssey] future of blastbay studios
Hi Josh, I'm not sure if the Lord of the Rings material has entered the public domain or not, but I definitely know Star Wars is copyrighted to the max. Lucasfilm Limited is very protective of their copyrights, and they are well known for slapping a copyright infringement suit on anyone who uses the Star Wars or Indiana Jones trade marks without their written permission. Having done some research on Lucasfilm's legal policy let's just say I've backed off of the Star Wars projects I was working on in a hurry. With something like Indiana Jones stuff you can slip by that simply by creating your own male or female archaeologist as I have done with Angela Carter. Thus I can have the same kind of game without getting Lucasfilm or Edos interactive after me for borrowing their ideas. With Star Wars that's way too specific a story line to copy cleanly. So I'm sure Philip won't touch that with a barge poll. P.S. The tree people in Lord of the Rings are called Ents. Thomas, I actually have this navigation problem as well, and I must say I really hate it. There's nothing I'd love more when it comes to gaming than playing a full-out 3d game, but I probably wouldn't do to well on it. they sound so awesome though. this is not only a problem for me with games, but for real mobility as well. I seem to need a lot more training than most blind people and it frustrates me to no end. [Audyssey] question on Apple II code?
Okay, the Braillesoft website has put up txt versions of the Apple II code for such games as The Oregon Trail and others. 1. Does anyone if this old code can be converted to a Windows code to make the game work to play on windows? 2. Can it be converted to C++, or what would be the best code to use to transfer this? 3. Once transferred, could it be made accessible for the blind to play since if I remember right the old game wasn't that graphical and told you how many bullets, money, oxen and stuff you had left. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Chastity --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. The type of games I'd like to see is simulated adventure games, like being chased by a grisly or alligator, where it's a matter of life, injury or death, not racking up points. Re: [Audyssey] The future of Blastbay Studios
Hi Thomas, I probably wouldn't say I have no sense of direction but I would definitely say that it is sparse. I could most likely learn to navigate a full 3d game but it'd take me a lot of time and practise, and would eventually put me off playing the game altogether. However, a 3d game where you sidestep rather than turn; e.g. left arrow to move west, up to move north, right to move east and down to move south, those I find a whole lot easier for some reason. So to me, that would be a nice middleground between a side scroller and a full blown fps. It just gives me so much more freedom as a game designer to build up a world the way I want it, without necessarily making it a pain for some gamers to navigate. If I made such a game I would also make extensive use of up and down movement such as climbing trees, swinging on branches or whatever so that you would indeed be in a true 3d world, just without all the hassle. What do you say? Kind regards, Philip Bennefall - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, December 26, 2009 1:45 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] The future of Blastbay Studios Hi Philip, That's a good question. Although, I'd love to create something other than a side-scroller many gamers constantly tell me how well they like the game, they would hate it if I didn't keep the game as a side-scroller, etc so I've concluded side-scrollers are quite popular with our customers. unfortunately lucas arts would make philip pay through the nose for the Starwars license to develope a game, and I don't believe getting the rights to the tolkeen characters and world would be any easier especially with the peter jaxon films. that being said, a fantasy side scroller with original characters and setting would certainly get my vote. beware the Grue! Actually, as you go on, --- even on to the playstation and gba, mega man started to include upgradable weapons, highly long plot sequences, character levels and innumerable rpg features along with the side scrolling action. I personally think the only reason most mainstream games are 3D now is fashion trends and preference, not to do with any weakness or lack of inervation in the 2D perspective. So, --- as far as side scrollers go, the sky's the limit really. [Audyssey] 3d training was: The future of Blastbay Studios
Hi. While i do see your point tom, personally for me it depends entirely upon the navigation system. i'm probably the worst person you will find in terms of spacial navigation, due to brain damage when I was born. I physically find any grid based game with multiple objects such as sudoku, mine sweeper or even solitare nerely impossible to play due to this. For 3d games though, I do nbelieve there is a lot of potential for something interesting provided the navigational features are good enough, --- turn indicators, examination in speech of the environment, use of markers, have I visited before keys etc. I've never had trouble playing Gma tank commander, shades or sarah, or indeed terraformers. that being said though, monkey business I'm frankly horrible at and have never got past the jungle level due to far too much sound, and far too little navigation help. I admit I love 2D games and want to see more of them, but I equally wouldn't want to see no more 3d games being produced. but if edevelopers are afraid that £3d games won't be well recieved, why produce one? One thing i've noticed is side scrollers are easier to pick up and play, --- you hear it on the left, move left and smack or collect it etc. also, with the tonnes and tonnes of left/right sterrio targiting affairs on the markit, many of them free, people get a lot of practice with that sort of navigation. there has recently been a lot of talk on this list about old atari 2600 remakes like Asteroids and missile command. how about creating a game like robotron or berzerk as a 3D freeby. Just you, in a mostly open 3D area, with a laser gun and lots of robots to shoot. Like Berzerk you could have electrified walls, or like robotron you could have a completely open square arena, but with power ups and bonuses to collect. either way, it would be the 3D version of something like kringle crash. No complicated mazes, weapons, puzles or anything else to worry about, just you, a gun, and some nasties, and your skills at 3D navigation and dodging. This would let people practice combat and movement in 3D as easily as practicing 2D, and create another nice fun game, possibly an atari remake in the process. I'm guessing with the genesis engine, you might already have done something similar yourself for testing purposes, if not I appologise, but if so, maybe it'd be worth slapping some sounds together and turning it into a game so people can practice their 3D combat skills. just an idea. beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] The future of Blastbay Studios
Hi philip. Strictly speaking tthat is not 3D. A 2D game uses vertical and horizontal dimentions, --- -ie, moving left to right, and up and down. Strictly speaking, only mota, and possibly the trees level of tarzan jr with the stream are 2D, sinse they are the only games which allow moving to levels above or below the currently playing area. Games like Q9, and superliam, fun though they are, are probably in the stricted deffinitional sense 1D, as they only go left to right. Beware the grue! [Audyssey] 3D navigation was: The future of Blastbay Studios
Hi. As regards 3D navigation, in fact navigation in general, as I've said, i'm probably the worst person you meet, with a biological cause sinse I was born prematurely and suffered brain damage which has resulted in me having an attrocious sense of spacial coordination and balance. Frequently I'll see something or hit it with my cane, but stil walk into it becauwse my ability to judge distance is so bad. i also find rotional exercises absolutely awful. How I manage in 3D games however, is much the same way I manage in actual life, and perhaps it's a method which would help others. i physically don't even try to mentally map where I am going, or where the relation betwene places is. I simply remember landmarks and sets of directions. thus in shades of doom, if there is a T junction, I'll mark the passage I came up, and the passage I go down, then leave the other unmarked. i thus only have to remember occasions where the path forks, and where there is more than one choice of direction, --- -then mark those, and remember the choice I took. when I've finished down one passage, I retrace my steps until i find something I've not yet explored, and try that. also, i make extensive use of the navigation features, and use the various sizes of chamber as land marks, as well as the audio kews around, and (in sarah), the names of the rooms. Yes, this method is bizarre, and yes I sometimes get lost, but it does work for me quite a lot of the time. It's also how I remember routes in real life, not by remembering actual directions, but by simply memorizing lists of land marks and what I should do, eg, turn right when i get to the tactile paving, or when i can smell a certain coffee shop. the one game this uttelry fails in is monkey business, firstly because your running around all over the place looking for those bloody monkies and often end up getting lost catching them, --, secondly because the areas in the game seem far more open than in something like shades, and thirdly (and probably most importantly), i find the navigation keys in monkey business distinctly unreliable, and not great at showing the environment or highlighting objects around you. just my thoughts. Re: [Audyssey] The future of Blastbay Studios
Hi Sharon, Regarding your question regarding Sidd Scrollers, no, crazy tennis is not at all a good example-that's actually nmre of a space invaders type feel. A side Scroller is literally a character moving from left to right across the screen, thinking of walking sideways instead of forwards. Re: [Audyssey] 3D navigation was: The future of Blastbay Studios
I like the side-steping idea... I mean, isn't that akin to what you do in mainstream console games that are 3d? If you hold left, you don't just spin around in circles... you walk and or run in that direction. The only gae I've seen it done diferently is resident evil... and maybe the first three onimusha games. - Original Message - From: dark d...@xgam.org To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Friday, December 25, 2009 7:10 PM Subject: [Audyssey] 3D navigation was: The future of Blastbay Studios Hi. [Audyssey] OT pro tools
Hi all, Just wondering if anyone on the list has used pro tools, and if so, do you find it usable with a screenreader? Reguards, and happy holidays! Re: [Audyssey] The future of Blastbay Studios
I'm with dark; we need more actual 2-dimentional side-scrollers. I wouldn't object to a 3d game of the type you suggest though I do find walking around a ritch environment a little wrird without the ability to turn my virtual head.
