Hi Jim,
Actually, I think the first live action game for the blind would have
to be Lone Wolf. It was GMA's second title and it was real time based
rather than turn based. Lone Wolf 1.0 was for Dos, but eventually
David Greenwood rewrote it in VB 6 and then 2.0 and later were full
Windows releases. So Lone Wolf probably takes the credit since it was
out far longer than Shades of Doom. Although, Shades of Doom was
probably the first true First-Person game for the blind.

Hi Philip,
Very good points. This has been one of the leading issues with
Mysteries of the Ancients. Some people say it is too hard on beginner
and completely unbeatable on expert. Others say beginner is far too
easy. There are so many variables to take in account it is awefully
difficult to balance it out so everyone finds it both challenging but
not too hard.
Case in point the traps. I myself don't believe in having ledges etc
around the traps as I think that does make it to easy to know when a
chasm, fire pit, lava pit, whatever is coming up. All the same people
have been encurraging me to add more indication to know when a trap
comes up so they can jump it. As of beta 15 I personally find the
traps in MOTA way too easy so they are kind of pointless in my
opinion, but people like them easy. One man's difficult is another
man's easy.

Keep in mind that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has a high cruel laugh, with a
high sharp cold voice that cuts through like a cold wind blowing against a

nude person immediately after they emerge from a nice warm shower. Now,
how's that for an image of Lord Voldemort's voice and laugh? (evil grin)

In deed. I think that is everyone's favorite part of the song. I
remember listening to that song over and over when I was a little kid.

On 11/19/10, Charles Rivard woofer...@sbcglobal.net wrote:
Tan me hide when I'm dead, Fred. Tan me hide when I'm dead. So we tanned
his hide when he died, Clyde, and that's it hangin' on the shed.

Hi William,
Yes I am adding the Hogwarts grounds level to the game which you can get to
only with a registration.
The expanded sound description section will let you listen to the whole list

of creatures and many new objects to find.
I am about to send the update to my private beta testing team.
So I have no idea exactly when it will be released to the public.
It will be a free update to all registered players.

Hi Tom,
Well, I think that is pretty cool, and I would like to make a similar sort
of suggestion now you've brought it up. How about you have an option to have

a user music folder and play random songs from that folder in the actual
game? I remember one game doing that - I believe Technoshock, and I loved
it.
Regards,
Damien.

 Hi,

Tonight I just discovered a new way to play games. One that, well,
rocks. Kind of combinds two hobbies in one you might say.

Earlier this evening I was testing some new changes in Mysteries of
the Ancients beta 17 when I frankly got sick and tired of hearing the
same music being looped over and over. So I wwent into the program
settings turned off the background music, and then fired up Windows
Media Player with an mp3 playlist of various 80's and 90's rock hits.

So here I am running through the tomb blasting skeletons apart,
slottering centaurs, and making short work of the harpies while bands
like Metallica is cranking Creeping Death, AC-DC is playing Shoot to
Thrill, or the Cranberries are singing Zomby in the background. It
adds a totally new dimmention to the game play with alternative rock
music blaring in your headphones while you are kicking serious butt.
It is frickin' great. If you would like it I'd be happy to upload a
trailer or something of me playing with music in the background.

I don't know it seams to give me more energy. It is like the music
gets me really juiced up and in a mood to beat the crap out of
something or engage in some wild fighting. As Pat Bennatar would say,
all fired up. I've got to try this approach in Shades of Doom or
similar action filled game. I think it rocks.

 Cheers!

Lol tom!

Actually i have done the same. If I need to learn some music, I frequently
set it playing in the backgrtound of a puzle or fast action game, in fact in

my audio review of bg hearts, you can here midis of The sorcerer in the
background which i was doing a production of at the time so needed to be
familiar with.

I've also occasionally used music for less interesting bits of a game,

for instance the long runs of trading in smugglers 3 are much more dramatic
with the music from Starwars pumping away in the background ;D.

One of my stranger habbits has been playing puzle or fast action games while

listening to books on tape, indeed I first read a good bit of the wheel of
time series while trying to play puzle bobble!

the weerd thing is, occasionally my game skills actually improve! I remember

having a horrible time with the 1st level of the first castle in Mega man
4, until! I started listening to Lord of the rings!

I'm not sure if this is because one of Mega man's weapons in the game is the

ring boomerang, one ring boomerang to rule them all? but either
way, I stormed through the rest of the game fairly quickly once I had frodo
and gandalf on my side ;d.

I've not really found many audio games I'd want to do this with though, just

for the problem of listening to two voices at once through your ears.

Beware the Grue!

That was indeed an excellent review. And it shows how far Philip has
come with his English since back then you could really hear his accent
and occasionally he'd confuse some words. But even then you could tel
he was really trying. Needless to say his efforts ave paid off. When I
first heard him in Q9 I almost didn't recognize him because not only
did his command of the language improve but his accent was less
 noticeable.

Hi Ben,
I think you have a registration already for the Sarah game.
Your same key will work on the new update when it is released.
If you have a new windows computer that requires a new key, I am willing to

This is different than the policy for the other Draconis games that require
you to buy the game again if you lost your key.

The expanded sound description section will let you listen to the whole

I am about to send the update to my private beta testing team.
So I have no idea exactly when it will be released to the public.
It will be a free update to all registered players.

 Hi,

Ah, but that's where alternative methods come in handy. Remember the
super large chasm in level 2 of MOTA?

There is no way you can jump it, but if you locate the hidden pressure
switchg in the wall you can lower a drawbridge so you can simply walk
across the chasm. This is why such impossible traps exists. You might
not be able to defeat it by normal means, but there might be a way
 around it.

How would removing the ledges take away the challenge? I would think
that would make it more challenging as you would have no way of

ledges and boundries around fires, spike traps, etc in the first
place.

Re: [Audyssey] Core exiles and chat?

2010-11-20 Thread dark
Actually, I will say the pa account comes in handy for the event changing,
and also the use of the gbm to post contracts.

As i recall, without the pa account, bad events can be quite a pest, though
certainly nothing major.

also, this means two extra fuel per tick, which, with a level 5 engine means
17 fuel every 15 mins, so literally unlimited fuel.

The thing I enjoy most in Ce, is wandering around, completing missions and
looking for random stuff. so, I've decided this time to mix a litle mining
in with that combat. Both use scan tech skills, both use device skills, both
use drone skills, both require reactors eventually to boost ship energy.

so, i bought some mining skill so that I can use variety of mining lasers.

I also got some more points in energy which will help when i start looking
for salvage.

Last time I went with kinetic weapons, but I really had to push to get them
doing enough damage, where as energy seems far more efficient.

I may have to sacrifice part of the skill, eg, not refine my own ore, but
there are players who can do that if needs be, and refining isn't as
interesting to me as the general scan and mine process.

Pluss, i don't plan on using combat missiles.

I might well have to have two sets of equipment to switch in and out, a
mining set and a fighting set, but this wouldn't be too bad.

Of course, it might be that I'll find I can't be successful at both things
at once but that's what Ip resets are for.

Previously I basically went pure combat pluss hawling but that left me doing
the same thing much of the time, basically flying around on long runs,
alternating betwene bits of fighting and it'd be nice to have at least some
choice.

Of course, I might entirely fail at this, in which case that's what Ip
resets are for.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

There's also salvage and mining missions you can take as well now in

Definitely those ip resets will come in handy. But like I say I'm going to
wait until the new year before I use them so I can take advantage of the
skill bonus's that you get as a result of the festive store. It's funny
because although it's only 1 skill point at a time but the ip gains are
pretty good where that's concerned.

[Audyssey] TDV Landing step-by-step instructions

2010-11-20 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi,

Here is a set of steps to get you on the ground every time:

1. Turn until the game tells you the beacon is at 12:00.

2. Descend until you are about 3000 or less feet above the ground, at
any speed and angle then level off.

3. Slow the plane until you hear the stall warning and then speed back
up slowly until it stops.

4. Descend slowly until you reach about 500 feet above the ground and
again level off.

5. Take out your landing gear at this point.

6. Insure that the beacon is five miles or less from you in any
direction.

7. If you are more than five miles away, turn toward the beacon and
put on a little speed until you are within five miles, then slow back down.
If the beacon is behind you and your within but close to the limit, I
recommend turning around.

8. Start descending, but don't let your angle get to sharp. Anything
greater than 150 should be fine.

9. You will eventually land successfully.

I know this is a cautious approach to landing, but if followed, will get you
on the ground every time.

Karl

Hi,

Here is a set of steps to get you on the ground every time:

1. Turn until the game tells you the beacon is at 12:00.

2. Descend until you are about 3000 or less feet above the ground,
at

any speed and angle then level off.

3. Slow the plane until you hear the stall warning and then speed
back

up slowly until it stops.

4. Descend slowly until you reach about 500 feet above the ground
and

again level off.

5. Take out your landing gear at this point.

6. Insure that the beacon is five miles or less from you in any
direction.

7. If you are more than five miles away, turn toward the beacon and
put on a little speed until you are within five miles, then slow back
down.

If the beacon is behind you and your within but close to the limit, I
recommend turning around.

8. Start descending, but don't let your angle get to sharp. Anything
greater than 150 should be fine.

9. You will eventually land successfully.

I know this is a cautious approach to landing, but if followed, will get
you

on the ground every time.

Re: [Audyssey] [BPC Discussion] Registration issues

2010-11-20 Thread Alfredo C

Hello all,
I would like to kniow, has anyone had any issues where TDV would act as a
demo after you have downloaded the files necessary for the game to be
registered? I am having issues trying to get the game to find the files. I
downloaded the most recent update with the patch, have downloaded the
lic.tdv with the client ID given to me, but most of the time the program
does not seem to recognize the files. I actually got it to get it to work
two times, the second time I left in death match 1 where I had to quit the
game After that I could never get it to back to work. It is still in demo
mode right now.
If anyone has had any of these issues, would you come forward and help me
with this problem?

Thanks,
Alfredo

Hi dark,

There's also salvage and mining missions you can take as well now in
addition.

Right now I'm altenating between combat hauling goods and passengers AND
SALVAGING.

[Audyssey] Fw: [BPC Discussion] Three-D Velocity Update

2010-11-20 Thread Alfredo C

From: Munawar
Sent: Saturday, November 20, 2010 4:27 PM
To: discuss...@bpcprograms.com
Subject: [BPC Discussion] Three-D Velocity Update

Please forward this message to anyone you think will benefit from this
information.

An update has been released for Three-D Velocity. Most notably, for those of
you who were having issues running NVDA and Three-D Velocity together, you will
find the experience to be more NVDA-friendly. There is no need to unload the
screen reader now before you start the game. Please see NVDA issue #1204.

Next, there was a small problem with the music. This has also been corrected.

The registration issue where the registration program would report a path not
found error has been corrected.

The startup scene at the beginning of a game can now be ksipped. Previously,
you could only skip the scene in Mission Mode.

Key map data can now be deleted from within the key map menu.

There is also a fix for the refuel tanker count. There was a problem where even
if you restart the Story Mode and play a new game, the count would not reset.

You can find a complete list of fixes and improvements, as well as download the
update, at the following link:
http://www.bpcprograms.com/programs/patches. This update installs over the full
setup, so you do not need to uninstall the game before installing the patch.
The update is about four megabytes in size.

Hi Shaun,

Interesting. I actually lost the tracks for my original Christmas cd
when we moved back in 2007, and as for the Shadows of the Force
soundtrack I completely forgot about that. In any case I have better
equipment now, and the new cd will sound, well, more professionally
done. Although, it would be kind of cool to redo the Star Wars cd if I
can remember how to play those songs. Its been years since I played
them on my keyboard.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] being creative.

2010-11-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lisa,

Well, in order to answer that question it might help to know more
about what exactly you want to create. As I often tell people every
programming language and toolkit has pros and cons. Lets look at a few
for a moment.

If you are only interested in text adventure games like interactive
fiction then something like Inform would probably be your best bet. It
is very simple, written for a inexperienced programmer, but isn't good
ffor much else other than interactive fiction. For that reason it is
pretty specific for that genre of game.

On the other hand there is an all purpose scripting language such as
Python that is very simple to learn, and can write anything from a
story driven interactive text adventure up to something more complex
like SoundRTS. In fact, I know of a couple of screen readers like Orca
and NVDA written in Python so it is a pretty powerful language with a
pretty easy learning curve.

Then, there is the Microsoft .NET sweet of languages like C# .NET and
Visual Basic .NET. These are a bit more complex than Python, but what
makes them nice is there is a huge amount of defined classes that
wrapps the Windows API giving you access to just about everything
through one common interface and set of libraries. This is were many
Windows professional developers are heading do to ease of use, and the
fact that the ..NET Framework is a very powerful piece of software.
.NET can be used to write the simplist text adventure to full featured
Windows applications like vidio games, office sweits, you name it. In
terms of total pay off .NET is probably the best option if you are
thinking of learning to program something else besides just games.
Still in terms of games we have Rail Racer, 3d Velocity, MOTA betas 1
through 10, etc all written in .NET.

Now, if you are tthinking of just writing games BGT is really going to
be your best bet in all likelyhood. Besides the engine being written
in C++ Philip has made it possible to access everything you need like
DirectX, Sapi, Windows timer controls, etc all in one tool without
having to read manuals and programming guides for all that stuff. So
for anyone just interested in games BGT is probably going to be
anyone's first choice, but isn't the only option.

So if you can give us a little more idea of what you plan to do with
your skills once you get them the list and I can help stear you
towards the best solution for you.

Hi Charles,

Yeah, it is cool. Right now I just played a game with Michael

Although, like I said in a previous e-mail I often play with harder

Something to really get the adrenaline going, and ready to punch,

 Karl

Get the update that just came out. This should fix the problem, though you

Re: [Audyssey] being creative.

2010-11-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Hayden,

Oh, a lot more than that. BGT is basically like its own little API
because it wraps a number of libraries such as DirectSound,
DirectInput, Sapi, and I'd imagine various other Win32 API functions
and libraries as well. He has incorperated Angel Script, a scripting
language, into BGT which simplifies matters as you don't need to know
C or C++ to use BGT which is a nice addition.

Take PB Streemway for an example. That is the library that drives the
audio engine for BGT and it is a rather useful library in of itself.
First all the hard work of wrapping DirectSound is done for you. You
don't have to mess with all the low-level grunt work like writing
custom load functions to load sound files into memory and create a
DirectSound buffer. I can say from experience that is truly grunt work
in the extreme. However, Philip has gone several steps beyond that.
Besides being able to load PCM wav data he can load compress file
types such as ogg, supports encripted ogg and wav files, it can open
an encripted packfile which he uses to good effect in games like Q9
and Kringle Crash. Right there BGT just through that one library
shaves weeks off the time of game development not to mention makes it
easier for new developers to get something constructive done, because
they don't have to be a very skilled developer to do it.

For example, take the act of creating a custom function to load a
sound file into memory. This might shock you but DirectSound and
XAudio2 aren't able to do this on their own. You have to write a
custom function to load your wav, ogg, mp3, wma, file etc and then
give it to DirectSound or XAudio2 for mixing and processing. There are
tutorials out there on this and the Microsoft platform SDK has
documentation on using MMIO to load sound data, but here we are
talking about doing hours of research to do something that should be a
simple task but is not. Streemway simplifies it for you, because it
has a custom function sw_LoadFromFile() that loads files and creates a
DirectSound buffer for you. Yay!

In other words BGT not only wraps the Windows libraries, but packages
everything in one nice toolkit that allows you to skip all the
low-level crap like writing your own function to load sound data, and
get on to the good stuff like writing the game itself. Who wants to
spend time learning how to write a custom function to load a sound
file, or cast a standard ascii character string to a unicode wide
character string just to pass a line of text to Sapi. Not only is that
vboring it ends up just being mindless grunt work just to do something
fairly basic. This is why C++ is not a beginners language. It is too
low-level and requires too much skill to master quickly.

That is also a big reason why C# .NET is becoming the industry
standard for general appplication programming for Windows. The .NET
Framework, like BGT, wraps everything and you can get on with the
business of programming whatever it is you want to write without
spending countless hours on low-level grunt work. If you use SlimDX
for .NET you don't have to fool with custom functions to load sound
data, because the .NET library already includes that basic
functionality built in. When dealing with strings the System..String
class does all the necessary conversions behind the scenes so you only
need to deal with one string type as far as the developer is
concerned. If you enter a standard ascii string like
Hello world!
the .NET Framework is nice enough to convert it to unicode for you
automatically. Another big yay for developers. BGT does something
similar as a string is simply a string of text, and you don't need to
get specific about type etc.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] being creative.

2010-11-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lisa,

Well, if you want my personal opinion I think you might be better
served with starting out with a general purpose programming language
like Python instead. Inform is certainly fine for writing interactive
fiction, because that is exactly what it was designed to do, but there
is a major down side to starting out too simple. What I am saying is
Inform was designed for people who have a specific interest in writing
simple text adventures with absolutely no programming background or
education. Problem is it doesn't really teach you anything
constructive in terms of programming either because it doesn't get
into topics like functions, classes, variables, etc in any depth to
carry over to another programming language. As a result if you wrote a
few text adventures and wanted to write something else, maybe like a
Space Invaders clone, you'd have to start from scratch again anyway
since Inform simply wasn't designed to create that kind of game.

So I'd pick Python. It is slightly more complex than something like
Inform, but the pay off for learning it is huge. It is one of the
fastest growing languages for hobbiests, is totally free, and there is
litterally thousands of pages of free documentation out there for
beginning to advanced Python programmers. Its open source nature means
it will remain free and well documented where languages like C# .Net,
by Microsoft, will cost you something to learn because it is targeted
towards professionals rather than a programming hobbiest just wanting
to tinker in her own home with games. Here is a very simple example
how Python is. (You might want to turn punctuation on at this point.)

#Guess the number
#Version 1.0
#By Thomas Ward
#Selects a random number and asks you to guess it

#Import the random module
import random

#Declare variables
loop = 1
choice = 0

#Enter game loop
while loop == 1:

#Select a random number
number = random.randrange(1, 10)

#Print message
print Enter any number between 1 and 10.
print Enter 0 to exit.

# Get tthe user's choice
choice = input(Enter selection: )

if choice number:
print Sorry, number is to low.

if (choice  number:
print Sorry, number is too high.

if (choice == number:
print Congratulations! You guessed it.

elif choice == 0:
loop = 0
print Exiting Guess the Number.
#End while
#End program

As you can see from this Python program I have just written a fairly
simple guess the number game in a very few lines of code. In fact,
most of the space is just taken up with comments to let you know what
is going on, and some spacing to make the code more readable.
Otherwise there is only like 10 lines that really matter. The rest is
just for you and I to keep track of the program flow. I've heard a lot
of people who say Visual Basic is the easiest language to learn for
beginners, but I can say from personal experience Python is far easier
than Visual Basic which is primarily why I'm suggesting it for a new
game developer like yourself. With a language like this you could be
up and running writing your own text adventures in a couple of weeks
depending on how quickly you pick up new things. Later on if you
wanted to create your own Troopenum, Judgment Day, Shades of Doom,
etc you would have to learn an API like PyGame or PySFML which really
isn't that bad. Definitely far easier than DirectX or some of the more
professional APIs like that.

To get the Python runtime and development system head over to
http://python.org
and for the largest source of manuals, tutorials, library reference
guides, etc head over to
http://docs.python.org
which should get you up and running in no time.
Later when you are ready visit
http://pygame.org
for the PyGame API, game tutorials, and yes hundreds of free sample
games with source code to help you learn how to program games in
Python.

HTH

Yes I am adding the Hogwarts grounds level to the game which you can get
 to
 only with a registration.
The expanded sound description section will let you listen to the whole
 list

of creatures and many new objects to find.
I am about to send the update to my private beta testing team.
So I have no idea exactly when it will be released to the public.
It will be a free update to all registered players.
 Phil

That's the point. I don't always manage to get to 1000 feet. Oh I'm sure I
get there but I can't seem to set either the airspeed or angle so that I
have enough time to deploy the landing gear and then line up with the
beacon. To date I've successfully landed once.

well don't bother about the beakon till you get to 1000, level off and
deploy your gear then concentrate on angle slowly reduce speed.
I made it almost to the ground but in my previous version all keys stopped

and I did not land though it showed 0, so who knows I think that was a
land for me at any rate.

Hi
Ok guys is tdv worth the download? I am asking because when I
downloaded tdv a year or so ago the sounds were not that good. For
example in the old tdv from a year or so ago you did not hear the
engines rev up and down in short, the game sounds were not that great.
So how is it now? Are the sounds better? Is the game really worth it
this time?

#Import the random module
import random

#Declare variables
loop = 1
choice = 0

#Enter game loop
while loop == 1:

#Select a random number
number = random.randrange(1, 10)

#Print message
print Enter any number between 1 and 10.
print Enter 0 to exit.

# Get tthe user's choice
choice = input(Enter selection: )

if choice number:
print Sorry, number is to low.

if (choice  number:
print Sorry, number is too high.

if (choice == number:
print Congratulations! You guessed it.

elif choice == 0:
loop = 0
print Exiting Guess the Number.
#End while
#End program

Later when you are ready visit
http://pygame.org
for the PyGame API, game tutorials, and yes hundreds of free sample
games with source code to help you learn how to program games in
Python.

HTH
