[Audyssey] SOD - Re: mota beta14 absolutely rocks!

2010-10-11 Thread Charles Rivard
The only reason I haven't been able to finish the first level, other than
one time, is because I haven't played it often enough, although I cannot put
my finger on exactly why I haven't. It is a good game, both challenging and
fun.

Hi Ben,
Oh, I see. Yes, the game itself is loosely based off Tomb Raider and
obviously the traps, weapons, etc are similar in some aspects.
However, having mazes, traps, whatever is pretty par for that genre of
game. It is in fact one of the reasons I personally like that style of
game.
However, in comparison Mysteries of the Ancients is pretty simple
compared to a mainstream game like Tomb Raider. In Tomb Raider there
are all kinds of puzzle elements such as the various stepping stones
that need to be jumped on in the correct order to open a locked gate
like in Last Revelation. Tomb Raider is famous for its timed traps
like pressing a lever to unlock/open a stone door only to have it slam
down on you just before you make it all the way through as in Tomb
Raider Prophecy, or the wheel that opens a trap door in Underworld.
Sometimes there are things you have to do or get early on in the game
such as a certain amount of water in jars to balance the skales on
another level to open a secret passage. It is these kinds of puzzle
elements and/or traps I haven't even come close to matching. So I
think Mysteries of the Ancients is a mere shadow of the original games
I based it off of, and therefore I feel it is pretty easy compared to
the kinds of sighted games I use to play before I lost my sight.
Since it is the actual structure of the levels and traps themselves I
guess there really isn't much I can do to help you. I know I've been
able to play Shades of Doom, completed it many times, while others
can't finish the first level. I don't understand why they can't finish
the game and I can, but the fact of the matter is not everyone has
the same ability to play the same game/games equally as everyone else.

Smile.

You say, This is how I do it: if I hear the sound of the fire in the
distance, I take

single steps with 2 second delays between each step.
So lara gives her first warning, so I only give one step, i.e press the
right arrow once with out holding it down.
so she first give her death scream and then only does she says careful now.
I just thought of letting you know.

This makes no sense to me. Can you restate it? Seems to me that she dies

consistency with this part of the game, and he'll get it.

Charles, this is literally what happened.
I do not understand at all why my post didn't make sense to you.
I tried my utmost best to describe the problem as clearly as possible.
I will have to purchase recording software and try to record it when she
give her death scream and then give a warning.
I will dropbox or sendspace the recording once I managed to record it.
But this is literally what happened:
Lara first gives her death scream and then she says careful now.
Perhaps you might think that its not humanly possible to scream, while dying
and then give a warning, but this is really what happened when I played mota
last night.

2010-10-11 Thread NIcol
Hi tom
Thanks for writing back.
I need some more help please.
On 09 October 2010 12:46 AM you wrote:
So I'm guessing if your computer was made any time in the past five years
you probably have some minimal 5.1 surround sound support on the sound
card's chipset, but maybe not the speakers/headphones you are using with

I bought my laptop last year some time, I cannot remember exactly when.
But I cannot remember when this laptop was made.
I am using a pair of headphones with a microphone attached.
I do not know the model and make of the headphones.
In other words you should be able to open the game's speech directory and
play the file Test_Speakers.wav with any program that can play sounds
Goldwave, Sound Forge, Windows Media player, etc and it should play the
sounds in the left and right speakers.
I played Test_Speakers.wav in winamp and the panning was 100 percent
correct. I heard it in the left ear and right ear. I played
Test_Speakers.wav in windows media player and there is almost no panning.
The voice saying left is coming from the centre and when it says right its
about 5 degrees right of centre.
Also does it make a difference if you are using headphones or speakers?
I only own this laptop, and it doesn't have good speakers for playing games.
I live with my mom and therefore I cannot play games using speakers as it
will disturb her and other people.
There are separate settings in the control panel for each of these and I'm
wondering if something is off in your sound card settings.
Can you please give me some help in changing my sound settings in control
panel?
I am afraid if I try to adjust settings, I am going to mess up my computer.
Sounds should definitely pan some and not be absolutely static on your
computer.
The panning in other games that makes use of sterio such as pipe2 works
fine.
Any help is much appreciated.

Re: [Audyssey] no sterio in mota

2010-10-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Nicol,
Well, it all depends on the software that came with your sound card.
However, I've got a Soundmax AC-97 onboard sound card in the desktop
I'm using at the moment. Under Windows XP I would do something like
press control+escape to open the Start Menu, go to the Windows Control
Pannel, and then find the Soundmax icon. If you have a Realtech or
something else the icon should be named appropriately for your sound
card or manufacturer.
Anyway, once I click on the Soundmax icon in the Windows Control
Pannel I have a dialog that pops up with settings for that sound card.
First is a listbox with some presets such as headphones, stereo, 5.1
surround sound, etc. Since I mostly use stereo headphones I select
stereo headphones from the presets. The next listbox is a list of DSP
effects such as Cave, Forest, Hallway, Underwater, etc. Basically, the
DSP effects just adds echo or changes the way things sound on your
sound card. I generally leave it set to None. Click on Ok and you
should be good to go.
However, as I said these directions largely depend on your sound card
and sound card software. This is just a quick example of the software
that came with my desktop computer's sound card before I eraced XP and
installed Ubuntu Linux on it.
I'd also recommend upgrading to service pack 3. Service pack 2 is
quite old, and there are a number of bug fixes, security updates, etc
in service pack 3 I'd highly recommend having.

[Audyssey] an idea for free d velocity.

2010-10-11 Thread Muhammed Deniz
Hi guys,
I thought of an idea for Tdv. In sted of we shooting the fighters and they get
blown up, why can't they dodge our attacks as well as we do? I mean when we
shoot with the gun and when we fire a crues missal, why can't they dodge it?
That would also add some more dromatic parts in the game. And what I thought
was that we could have a boss at the end of the game. Basically, because you
practice, they could challonge you with a practice boss plain. You have to
dodge the boss and you have to shoot him, and he does the same. Anyone agree?

[Audyssey] online sports games was: on line sports games that are accessable.

2010-10-11 Thread dark

Hi Ian.

i believe there are several, notably hattric, the famous football game. go
to www.whitestick.co.uk and look under the games to play online section for
some notable ones.

The only reason these aren't in the audiogames.net database is that both Cx2
and I know very litle about sport so wouldn't really be great at writing
reviews of online sports management games which are often highly detailed (I
can get away with things like super football).

In fact if anyone on the lists wants to submit information about a game not
in the audiogames.net database just drop me an E-mail.

though note good command of English and fairly decent grammar is essential
if your review is to be put on site so that others may read it, though there
is no need for html code if you don't know it, sinse I'll be glad to add
that if you can write a decent review.

For what sort of thing is required, just check the audiogames.net website
entries.

Hi Nicol,
I'm not sure what exactly what is wrong, but it could be one of two
things. First, the input system which has already been addressed/fixed
in beta 15 as far as I can tell. Second, you are running low on
strength and when Angela's strength is low she can't use the sword. In
either case hitting the spacebar like crazy won't help you and
probably just fill the event queue with a bunch of key presses that
need to be processed slowing the game and input system down.

The sword is a very useful weapon. I have no trouble using it. The trio of
hand-swung weapons works out quite nicely. The whip gives extra range, the
sword gives extra power, and the dagger gives speed of attack. I like it.

[Audyssey] MOTA Character Comments

2010-10-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi everyone,
I've got a question for all of you that will have some bearing on
Mysteries of the Ancients beta 15. It has to do with the
messages/comments Angela says when she enters rooms, encounters traps,
monsters, whatever.
At first when I created Mysteries of the Ancients I liked the idea of
having Angela Carter speaking short comments like Here Comes Trouble
and things like that. Now, after I've tested and played the game for
several months I find those same comments distracting and a bit down
right annoying. They are simply a bit old if you know what I'm saying.
It has come to the point where I'd like to turn them off or just get
rid of them from the game completely. Which is why I'm asking you for
your opinion on the matter.
First, the warning messages. I'm sure some of you are going to say
that we still need those in order to locate traps, monsters, whatever.
That's no longer the case in beta 15.
In beta 15 as per request I've added a queue before each trap to let
you know it is there. For chasms, lava, and fire pits you will hear
the sound of acrumbling ledge to know you are very close to that
particular trap. For spike traps you will here the footsteps change
from stone to metal which will let you know you are very very close to
the spikes. Basically, there are now alternative means of gathering
the same exact information without depending on hearing Angela say
watch out or careful now to know a trap is coming up.
Second, is timing. For quite a while now several of you have reported
that the trap worning messages either come too soon or too late.
About the most extreme case of this is Nicol's recent report that said
the careful now message didn't even come until after Angela had got
burned in the fire pit. This is clearly a problem for anyone relying on
training mode to learn the game. It can't remain to work like that.
Problem is I've adjusted things, tested, and retested and always seam
to get different results. Sometimes the messages come too soon and
some times not soon enough. It is basically hopeless. Which is one
reason I decided to go ahead and add ledges and other such indicators
that a trap is near. It is really the only surefire way to to create a
consistant trap warning.
So with that in mind if there are now alternative trap warnings in
place and the comments like careful now aren't that reliable I'm in
favor of just removing them from the game. After all, if it can't be
fixed why leave it in the game at all.
Finally, there is the reason I mentioned above. After I have heard
Angela say here comes trouble for the thousandth time in the game I
tend to get bit sick of hearing it. I'd like to shut it off or
something. However, the way the feature was incorperated into the game
itself there is no way of turning it on/off without rewriting a good
deal of code. It would be quicker and easier just to delete the
hundred lines or so than it would be to write a hundred or more if
statements to find out if that feature is on or off before speaking
the comments.
So what do the rest of you think. If enough of you want the feature I
can keep it in the game, but if several of you are like me, a bit sick
and tired of them, let me know so I can edit them out of the game
before release.

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] using the sword in mota beta14

2010-10-11 Thread Bryan Peterson
I used to do the same with the original Prince of Persia. In fact once I get
more confident with BGT one of my projects is going to be to see if I can
create an audio only game in as close to the same style of the original
Prince of Persia as possible. That would include the spikes that shoot up
from the ground and of course those smashing jaws that would cut you in half
if you walked under them at the wrong time. And even back in those days
player death sound effects could be quite nasty. Getting killed by one of
those jaws was a prime example.

Hi all
Those of you who had sight and played mainstream games in the past, can
you

remember a game called bomber man?
I cannot exactly remember all the contents of this game but I have good
memories of me and my sighted friends playing bomber man when I was
younger.
I had the joystick in my hand and my friends told me which direction to
go.

I can remember that in bomber man, the player runs in 4 directions,
planting boms and picking up amulets.
If memory serves, these amulets were called pies.
If memory serves, my sighted friends told me these look like little pies.
Grab them for extra health.
And then in bomber man you had to avoid bombs from enemies and plant bombs
along the way .
And we had to be careful not to step into bombs we planted ourselves.
I can remember the adrenelin rush when an enemie is close on my tail and
my

friends yell in excitement:
right! Right! No left! The other way!
We had loads of fun with bomber man.
Do you guys think an accessible remake of bomber man is possible?
Is there any copyright issues involved?\

2010-10-11 Thread Charles Rivard

If being able to turn them on or off, or having them in the training mode
only, would cause you to have to do a lot of time consuming rewriting, and
if the newly incorporated sound clues work reliably, then I would say to do
away with them, even though a character who speaks throughout the game does
add character. Is there a way to randomly have Angela say something like
Here comes trouble!, or Oh, no! when an attack begins, and have the
crumbling ledge at the edge of a pit as a warning all the time? That way,
you won't rely on her voice, but it is there once in a while, as if she's
sort of thinking out loud, which might be a natural reaction to an attack?

Subject: [Audyssey] MOTA Character Comments

Thanks.

Hi Charles,
That's right. I bet you had no idea nannu nannu were my first words.
According to my mom that was the first words I ever spoke. Lol!
No kidding. Apparently when I was a toddler my mom and dad spent a lot
of time watching Mork and Mindy, when I was growing up, and I use to
sit and watch the show too. Although, I don't remember it well.
Anyway, before too long I was running around the house going nannu
nannu like a little Mork. Funny thing was I sort of invented some
words along the way like waddu for water, daddu for dad, and mommu for
mom. I didn't quite get the hang of the fact for a long time that
words didn't have to sound like nannu nannu. Lol!

Cheers!

2010-10-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,
Not without a bunch of extra rewriting. Anything is possible if I want
to take the time to randomly speak messages or have an on/off switch
whatever. It is one thing just to search for x number of lines and
delete them. it It is quite another to first delete them and then
rewrite them complete with if statements that tells the game to do
this if this happens or to do that if that happens etc. Its not hard
work, but time consuming work.
One way to look at this is I could go ahead and remove them now, but
some day down the road when the game is stable, there isn't a lot to
do, I can take a day or two and put them back in properly so you can
turn them on/off or they will play only once and a while. I agree they
do add character, but the current way they were included isn't the
best way I could have done it. Especially, if I'd like the option to
just turn them off if I get tired of them.

crumbling ledge at the edge of a pit as a warning all the time? That
way,

you won't rely on her voice, but it is there once in a while, as if she's
sort of thinking out loud, which might be a natural reaction to an
attack?

Hi Charles,
That's right.
Lol!

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] what is wine? RE: MOTA Beta 14 Released!

2010-10-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Thanks for the tip. That would be awesome if I could use that to help
get some of the Windows games up and running under wine. Especially,
since I am down to one and a half Windows computers and several Linux
boxes.

Smile.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Character Comments

2010-10-11 Thread shaun everiss

well I never use the warnings for traps anyway I use the view command.
I aggree also about the messages.
In a game I play in bgt called battlezone enemies say random
messages, I suppose angela could say victory messages after a battle,
and or stuff before.

Saying that its not a major part of my game play.
At 01:45 p.m. 12/10/2010, you wrote:

Thanks.
