The Japanese version is apparently the hard mode, but nintendo

Interestingly enough though, sinse I've never actually played original Nes

Re: [Audyssey] Vanishing Platforms was Q9 upcoming patch

2010-10-19 Thread Sarah Haake

Hi,
speaking of vanishing platforms, there is a paticular game which comes to my
mind here.
When I still had sight I had an comodore amiga 500 at home. There was a game
called BC Kid. Basically the main character was a guy where the head was a
lot bigger then the whole body. In the various levels you killed the enemies
by hitting them with your head. Some enemies needed more then one hit and
the bosses needed a many hits of cause.

Well, to come back to vanishing platforms:
There was a stage which looked like a giant toy shop or something like that,
the boss there was a giant toy car which tried to roll over you. In one
level of this stage, there were giant square blocks to jump on. You started
on the bottom of the level and had to get to to top by jumping on these
blocks. But the tricky thing was, that these blocks split in the middle as
soon as you landed on them. Thus, you had to keep jumping from block to
block and couldn't rest anywhere, because you would fall down. It could be
quite frustrating when you almost reached the top and then you stay on a
block a split second too long and fall back down all the way.
But this where the type of games which I liked to play and still would if I
had the sight to do it. Unfortunately, I can't think of any game for the
amiga which would be possible to play without sight, except maybe the early
street fighter titles which came out for this system.

Best regards
Sarah

[Audyssey] Happy 25th Birthday, Nintendo NES

Happy 25th Birthday, Nintendo NES

By Marcus Yam - Source : Tom's Guide US

My childhood in a box.

Earlier this week we ran the story about the first release of Windows 1.0 in
1985, when some of you, who are reading this now from a Windows 7 machine,
weren't even born yet.
If that didn't make some of us feel old yet, there's also another important
birthday in history this week. A quarter of a century ago, on October 18,
1985, Nintendo sold the very first Nintendo Entertainment System console in
FAO Schwarz New York City.
While the NES wasn't the first successful video game system at home, it was
the start of a worldwide gaming giant whose dynasty continues today.
Some of us may call our PC as the home for our favorite games today, but for
many of us our early gaming experiences were on the NES.

Re: [Audyssey] marvel vs. capcom 3 gameplay

2010-10-19 Thread Johnny Tai
I wouldn't say SC IV went backward, but it did not go forward as expected.
In my opinion, once a game reached a certain level of greatness, it's best
for them to just stop making it otherwise, the backslide begins. I loved the
first 3/4 Resident Evil titles, but after that, it's all the same old thing,
different tricks and different angles, but overall, you no longer get the
creepy feeling you get while you play RE 1- and that's a failure.
Granted, I ahve not actually played SC IV, but I've played the SC Broken
Destiny which is the PSP version of SC IV- to me, it's just too similar to
SC III in general that it was almost a waste of time and money making the
game.
Speaking of the soul series...one thing I really love about it is that it's
one of the very few Japanese fighting games that's been done in full English
voices lol.
To me, that's where Tekken 5 got real goofy- in story mode, sometimes a
English fighter meets a Chinese fighter, both speaking their own language
and yet carrying on the conversation as if that's natural rofl.

It went something like this if I remember it right:

Lei: 'Ah, so you're the one, I'm here to arrest you.'
Feng: 'Ah, soi ni ju se na ge da wu sing chung de ja huo! Ta hao la, jing
tian, wo ju jeng ming wo chi she she shong jwei chiang de! Hahaha!'
(Note, my Chinese spelling is mostly guesswork, I've forgotten most of them
lol.)

But you get the idea...

Hi,
\Smile. Trust me MOTA is simple compared to the kinds of games I'm
scheming for future releases. All this talk about Megaman has
reminded me how much I loved those games, and I'd love to play
something like them again.
For example, as I said earlier I've been thinking of something like
Megaman for a very long time. Some kind of super hero with lasers,
rockets, and battle armour set in a futuristic sci-fi setting. Even if
it were a 2d side-scroller it could be quite challenging with force
fields, moving/vanishing platforms, and some equally futuristic
traps.Plus normal bad guys combat droids, troopers waring battle
armour, robot tanks, whatever.

Re: [Audyssey] Vanishing Platforms was Q9 upcoming patch

2010-10-19 Thread dark
It was a similar style to original duke before it went 3D, though if I
remember rightly a lot of the point in duke games was overcoming the enemies
rather than the land scape, though I admit I never got to play them

Hi,

What you are describing sounds like a Duke Nukem type of game. If so,
sounds

really good. I enjoyed playing that game as well as the Megaman series.

Hi,

Re: [Audyssey] marvel vs. capcom 3 gameplay

2010-10-19 Thread clement chou
The changes from sC 3 to 4 were only really noticible if you were a
competetive player. The point wasn't supposed to be adding gameplay
features. The saying is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Soul calibur 3
actualy had bad gameplay where fighting game fans were concerned, and Soul
Calibur 4 improved it by miles. Unfortunately, it still wasn't as good as
sc2. That game had the best system out of all the games.. nevertheless, soul
Calibur is a staple in the series and should be remembered. As for audio,
well, I think you are the only one there, Ben. The music was amazing, and
the sounds, if anything, improved. They became more realistic rather than
the anime clashes of the first three games.
As to few japanese games being done in english, I can understand that. If
you want an example of why fighting games should be done in a language other
than english, look at street Fighter IV's english voices. As to tekken, I do
admit it is kind of odd... but I personally have no problem with it. Tekken
focusses a lot more on nationality than SF, and therefore i seems only
natural to have everyone speaking their own native tongues, even given how
it's a bit odd that everyone understands what everyone else is saying.

Here's another transcription of the dialog between feng and lei. This is my
take on it... see if this rings any bells for manderin. lol And by the way,
not true. Not all characters speak their own language... lei wulong is an
example! lol.

Lei: I finally found you.
Feng: Ni she shei?
Lei: Decetive Lei wulong of the hong kong police. I'm placing you under
arrest?
Feng: Lei wulong? Xue wu xing chuan de jia hwo? You yi su... fang ma guo
lai!

The line feng first says means who are you, for anyone who is wondering. The
second says, Lei wulong? The guy that fights using the five-form style? How
amusing.. bring it on!

2010-10-19 Thread Johnny Tai
Lol, actually since Lei is Cantonese, it sort of, and I mean sort of, makes
sense he goes English- it's how he's generally depicted in anime and the
motion pictures.
One game that has real good English voices in my opinion is the Maximum
impact games- especially the second one- that's one of my all time favorite
games.
And yes, some games sound just awful when done in English lol- I think the
Bloody Roars games got very bad reviews for that in particular.
Ah, also Toshinden III, I love that game but again, the English dialogs make
me cringe.
This issue's not just limitted to fighting games however. I remember
Resident Evil I- the English voices sounded so forced and fake.

I googled Microsoft Anna volume and found that people say the version of
Anna that comes with the streets and trips software is louder than the one
from vista or windows 7.
One person suggested downloading the free demo of streets and trips and then
removing it leaving the louder Anna voice.

This could also be done for windows xp.

2010-10-19 Thread Johnny Tai
Yeah, some say the voices are bad for Maximum, but I personally really like
it. Alot of the issues center around how things are translated too- move
names etc. For some reason, it's okay for Ryu, for example, to shot
'Hadoken!' every time he fires the attack, but if he shouts it in
English...well, you get the picture...Hurricane Kick!
There is one problem with maximum impact 2 that I've noticed- where voices
are concerned, but I'm not sure if this exists in English only or in both:
Sometimes if the actions go too fast, the characters' voices overlay, like
your character's saying ouch and shouting the attack at the same time- very
goofy.

look/sound like Michael Jackson lol.
Though Toshinden claimed to be 3d, according to many it was actually 2.5D-
whatever that is.
One thing that annoys me alot when playing Toshinden 1 and 2 is the falling
off the ledge thing- I hate drop-off arenas! Especially when you use a large
guy like Iron, often as soon as you start the fight he falls off.
The one thing that kinda annoys me about 3 is that they filled the roster
with duplicates of each original characters and called it quit. I know the
same practice has been used by many games, but personally it just feels like
a cheap way of making the roster look big.
I have exactly the same issues with the king of fighters series since the
Kyo clones appeared too.

That is why I stick to SF and teken. Noone clones anyone else. lol. And ben,
when I say 3d Mk games, I'm talking about deadly alliance, deception,
armageddon.
And no, Toshindenn was definitely in the soul league. But soul games have
dropoff arenas too. lol.

Ryu in any SF game fllowing the first one only has Japanese voices. a
hadouken is a hadouken. But in Street Fighter 4, it's a very bad
pronounciation of Hadouken. And hurricane kick isn't tatsumaki senpu kyaku
anymore. It becomes r! lol. Yet, all the other moves remain, though
badly pronounced. As for the voice problem in Maximum impact, it's just a
small glitch.

Yeah, some say the voices are bad for Maximum, but I personally really
like it. Alot of the issues center around how things are translated too-
move names etc.
Sometimes if the actions go too fast, the characters' voices overlay, like
your character's saying ouch and shouting the attack at the same time-
very goofy.

2010-10-19 Thread Johnny Tai
Lol, the one bone I've to pick with Tekken lately, and I'm not the only one
it seems- I've seen alot of whining on youtube about this one, that
ridiculously cheap/tough bosses we're given in 5 and 6.
I haven't spent alot of time with 6 yet, so I have not found a way to beat
the...insert swear word here...but I did play 5 alot, and that boss was
just...well, if you don't know how to beat it, it kills you in two hits, but
once you find one move to use on it and just keep repeating, it's so easy
it's no fun.
To me that's a big design flaw, a boss character should be hard, but hard in
the way that'd make it a good fight instead of something like an instant
kill.
This is where I find Capcom games thus far are good with- most bosses are
tough yet not 'cheap.'
I say most cause I haven't been able to beat Shin Akuma in Marvel verses
Capcom II- again, I've seen several guides/reviews that whine about that one
too.
The soul series bosses are good that way too, tough but with some serious
play time and work, beatable.
Of all the games I've played to date, my favorite boss is actually Geese
from Fatal Fury Wild Ambition- I haven't beat him yet, but every time it's
s close that even the sore loser in me gotta admit it was a good
fight.
Come to think of it, it's funny that they'd make Tekken 5 and 6 bosses this
way- I remember I used to say that Tekken bosses were rather wimpy-
especially tekken 3 and 4. Tekken 2 on the other hand, blocky graphics and
so-so sounds aside, had a great balance...Kazuya was a beast lol.

Tekken 1 was too easy, but for its time I guess it was fine.

Lol, everytime I hear Guile speaking English, or what supposed to be
English, in most SF games, I cringe... At least Tekken makes the languages
sound okay eh?
It's like the earlier Fatal Fury games, I had no idea that Terry was
shouting English lol.
Mind you, for someone who grew up watching cheesy Chinese martial art
movies, I laughed my head off when I heard Feng's Mandarin in Tekken...no
one speaks Mandarin like that!
I kinda hope that they'd have him shout some move names in Mandarin...that'd
be funny.
You were saying how badly the hadoken is pronounced...ever watched the
Street Fighter U.S cartoon series? It's so bad it's sad.

If you're the Canadian Johnny Tai I've heard about, then we have the
taiwanese background in common. lol.

Well, tekken five's boss was cheap yes, so was 6. But half the fighting
games in the world have cheap bosses. SNK fighters in general are notorious
for their cheap bosses.

As to Feng's manderin... I've actually heard a lot of people talk like that
in films. That is considered the manderin standard. And it's nowhere near as
funy as watching people from taiwan speaking it. especially people who speak
more Taiwanese than Manderin.

I haven't seen the cartoon, but I did see a clip of Street Fighter: the
movie... that is, the fighting game. And let's just say that that makes
Resident Evil's acting sound almost decent.

Yeah, I'm the one you...um...heard of...and I am sure I know from whom...
lol
You're right SNK bosses are so cheap they got their own trade mark as SNK
Boss Syndrome lol- I almsot trashed the darn controller trying to beat the
boss of Maximum Impcat 2- granted, I only just picked up the game like 3
hours prior to trying, so the fact I made it to him without defeat was a
good sign- but a combination of super damaging moves, teleportation,
freezing, and a squeaky voice just made that boss particularly madning.
Lol, don't pick on Taiwanese Mandarin...when I was, *clear throat* your
age...here we go...alot of us spoke that way just cause it was considered
cool rofl.
You know the whole Taiwanese gangster stuff...you supposed to chain-smoke,
talk with bad Mandarin and drink alot of beer.
The motion picture of SF is/was, masterful, when compared against the US
series lol- seriously, that series' just bad enough to be worth watching.
The Tekken 2 animated movie on the other hand, was alot better- the English
dialogs were still kind of stiff, but at least with more emotions.
I'm not sure if you watched any of these animes in Cantonese or Mandarin
dubbs- those can be rather awful too. I watched the whole Dragon Ball Z
series in Mandarin, and the whole Saint Seiya series too.

Hey, I'm 18. And maybe we should keep this going offlist if we're going to
keep non-gaming stuff involved. lol. And I'm pretty sure you know who I've
heard about you from. haha.

Hey, I'm not that young... I'm 18. lol. And I know plenty of people who
still talk like that. It's the whole thing with them speaking hokien... and
the pronunciations and accents cary through to the manderin. But I don't
thnk Feng's manderin is that bad... like I sad. Any gangster or action movie
has that kind spoken in it.

Never saw the SF animated series, but I did see the live action film... I
thought it was okay. In terms of fighting game to movie conversions, the
best one still has to be the original MK film. That one is unrivalled... and
dragon ball z in manderin? That could be interesting to watch.
