 specified sysplex=filesys in the back-level members?

We did. I already IPLed z/OS 1.13 on two of our 5 LPARs Basic Sysplex.
No sysplex=filesys in IOEFSPRM, sysplex=no in BPXPRMxx.
Both LPARs with z/OS 1.13 came up without any problems, the remaining 3
(at z/OS 1.11) did not complain either.

 Q2:  What observable effect(s), if any, would occur if we specify
 sysplex=filesys in our 1.11 images without sharing file systems?

Honestly, I didn't tried. I would think that sysplex=no takes precedence over
sysplex=filesys, but again, it is only my assumption.

I did run the check and this is the output:

I don't know what the check implies with 'single systems'. In every case by

 culprit:

this explains why hsm restarts after being shutdown. But it also means your
automation
product is not setup identically on all your LPARs., otherwise you would have
seen the
same behavior for the other hsm in the plex.
Also, reading better what the RESTART parameter can do, it seems as it restarts
hsm

I hope you were now able to enlarge your hsm journal, which was your goal.

I don't think so. I'm not aware of any hsm parameter which would restart the

Re: HSM Journal dataset is almost full

2011-11-15 Thread Walter Marguccio
 From: Uriel Carrasquilla uriel.carrasqui...@mail.mcgill.ca

 When we shutdown HSM in all of our LPARs without setting them in the
 EMERGENCY mode, we never had any problems with HSM re-starting.

Under chapter 14 DFSMShsm Libraries and Procedure
of the DFSMShsm Implementation and Cust. Guide. there are a couple of
sentences which confirm what you claim:

Using the RESTART Keyword to Automatically Restart DFSMShsm after an
Abnormal End: If you are running DFSMShsm in an MVS/ESA environment, you
can use the RESTART keyword in the DFSMShsm startup procedure to
automatically restart DFSMShsm after an abnormal termination.

When you specify the RESTART keyword in the DFSMShsm start procedure, no
operator intervention is required to automatically restart DFSMShsm. The
protocol
for the RESTART keyword is: RESTART=(A,B), where A is required and is the
name of the DFSMShsm procedure to be started, and B is optional and specifies
any additional parameters to be passed to the procedure.

Figure 88 on page 333 is an example of the DFSMShsm startup procedure. Notice
that the EMERG keyword NO allows all DFSMShsm functions and that the
RESTART keyword restarts DFSMShsm automatically. However, when DFSMShsm
is restarted the status of the EMERGENCY keyword in the restarted procedure is
YES. When EMERG=YES, DFSMShsm does not allow any functions to start.

Looks like I learned something new. Have a look at RESTART keyword in your
procedure.

 What do you mean when you say hsm is defined under ARM?

ARM is the Automatic Restart Manager, which allows you to define Started Tasks
or Address Spaces
which need to be restarted in case they are down (very short definition).

I would do what the hsm Storage Admin Guide suggest under moving the

1. Put DFSMShsm in emergency mode.     SETSYS EMERGENCY
2. Issue the CONTROLDATASETS parameter of the BACKVOL command to back up the

3. Stop DFSMShsm.                                 F DFSMSHSM,STOP
4. Delete the old journal data set
5. Allocate a new journal data set on a different DASD device.
6. Start DFSMShsm.                                 S DFSMSHSM

Obviously, I'd allocate a much bigger journal at step 5.

The Init and Tunig Reference states more than once that:

For  the  LNKLST  created  at  IPL,  the  dsname  cannot  be  an  alias.

From my understanding, you CAN use an alias for a dataset included in a

Re: DFDSS QUESTION - BYPASS SMS - CORRECTION

2011-08-11 Thread Walter Marguccio
 I tried using both HLQ ZWAXPG and SYS1 however

 for some reason SMS is trapping the TAPE1 DSN

if hlq ZWAXPG is 'trapped' by SMS, it means that your SMS ACS routines

are coded in order to assign a SC and a SG (ISTINT1) to datasets whose hlq is
ZWAXPG.

Which doesn't mean it is bad.

The problem which you seem to have here is that SG ISTINT1, which has 5
volumes, is not
able to allocate 1055 Cyls as primary space.

Can you try to reduce the primary space with a smaller value ?
Can you try to allocate the dataset with another SMS-owned hlq which will
choose a

bigger SG ?

Re: How to control in an JCL that a file is empty or not exist ?

2011-07-14 Thread Walter Marguccio
 I need to control the execution of certain programs based on the existence of
 these files (including files created empty).

 I try to used IDCAMS but didn't work in my tests.

IDCAMS should work fine when you need to know if a given dataset exists or not:
    LISTC ENT('A.B.C')
If A.B.C does not exist, you would get a rc=4, and you can
execute the next step conditionally with the IF-THEN-ELSE capability.

Likewise, if you want to check if a dataset is empty, IDCAMS is your friend:
    REPRO IDS('A.B.C')  OFILE(DD1) COUNT(1)
If A.B.C is empty, you receive a rc=4.

 SDSF runs as server address space.

If you do, then you need to define the needed authorizations in ISFPRMxx
in your PARMLIB concatenation.

 I have given the ISF.** access to the user.

AFAIK, either you protect SDSF functions using the SDSF Server and its ISFPRMxx
member,
or you activate the RACF class SDSF and define the needed profiles to
accomplish the same goal.
How do you want to control SDSF functions ? It looks like you are using SDSF
Server to do it.
If you are, then you must add the user you mentioned in your earlier post in
ISFPRMxx, and
then activate the changes with the command: F SDSF,REFRESH,M=xx, where xx is
the suffix of
your ISFPRM member.

 We are running a z10BC with 16GB of storage.

 We currently have 4 LPARS.
 They all have 3 GB defined.
 I would like to add 1 GB to each of the production LPARS (we have 2),
 and be able to add more storage to one of them if the need arises.

 What should I specify in the reserved storage section?

Update your LPARS' activation profiles as follows:

LPAR PROD1: CS=4096 MB, 2048 MB Reserved
LPAR PROD2: CS=4096 MB, 2048 MB Reserved
LPAR TEST1: CS=3072 MB, 2048 MB Reserved
LPAR TEST2: CS=3072 MB, 2048 MB Reserved

After you shutdown PROD1 and/or PROD2 and *before* you IPL, do a
Deactivate/Activate of the LPAR Image,

in order topick up above changes. Afterwards, you can IPL PROD1 and/or PROD2,
which will have 4096 MB of CS
and will be able to add up to 2048 MB of CS automagically, if needed.

 My next question is about the RSU parameter in IEASYS. What would be a good
value for this?

RSU=OFFLINE in IEASYSxx gives you more flexibility.
See z/OS Initialization Tuning Reference for your z/OS level forfurther

Re: Multople zone in SMPE

2011-04-07 Thread Walter Marguccio
 Can anybody help me, how to setup multiple zone to follow above concept.

Once I receive a new z/OS with the ServerPac or SystemPac, I use this steps
to clone the delivered target zone:

//COPYSMP EXEC PGM=ADRDSSU
//SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSIN DD *
  COPY DATASET(  -
   INCLUDE(  -
   SMPE11.tgtzone_name.*, -
 ))-
  RENUNC(-
(SMPE11.tgtzone.*,SMPE11.cloned_tgtzone.*) -
  )-
  OUTDYNAM(myvol)   -
  TOL(ENQF) CATALOG

Above step clones the target zone's CSI, along with its SMPxTS.
The datasets' 2nd qualifier equals to the tgtzone or cloned_tgtzone names.

//ADDZINDX EXEC PGM=GIMSMP
//SMPCSI   DD DISP=SHR,DSN=my.GLOBAL.CSI
//SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=*
//SMPLOG   DD DUMMY
//SMPOUT   DD SYSOUT=*
//SMPCNTL DD *

  SET BDY(GLOBAL) .
ZREN(tgtzone) TO(cloned_tgtzone) NEWDATASET(SMPE11.cloned_tgtzone.CSI).

  SET BDY(cloned_tgtzone) .
ZEDIT DDDEF .
 CHANGE VOLUME(sysres,cloned_sysres) .
ENDZEDIT .

UCLIN.
 REP DDDEF(SMPLTS)  DA(SMPE11.cloned_tgtzone.SMPLTS) .
 REP DDDEF(SMPMTS)  DA(SMPE11.cloned_tgtzone.SMPMTS) .
 REP DDDEF(SMPSCDS) DA(SMPE11.cloned_tgtzone.SMPSCDS).
 REP DDDEF(SMPSTS)  DA(SMPE11.cloned_tgtzone.SMPSTS) .
ENDUCL.

The above step adds the cloned_tgtzone' to the GLOBAL zone index, changes the
sysres to every DDDEFs belonging to cloned_tgtzone, and changes the dataset
names of allSMPxTS accordingly.

I don't clone the DLIB zone, nor the DLIB volumes, since I leave one DLIB
zone/volume(s)
for x Target zones/volume(s) (where 'x' can be 2, 3, or 4)

Chris,

thanks very much for taking the time to answer my question.

The Share presentation 6865, (Boston, 2010) from A.Christensen
provide the explanation which I expected to find in the Communication
Server bookshelf at z/OS 1.11 level. Or in the z/OS 1.11 migration guide,
since loading EZBTIINI into ECSA using dynamic LPA functions
is new since z/OS 1.11, and wasn't there at z/OS 1.9 level.

I used Google, but wasn't smart enough to look at page 2, where the link
to Christensen's presentation was. I apologise for this.

I pay always attention at what the HealthChecker tells me, especially
when I IPL a new z/OS level. In this case, I wanted to know whether
the alarm caused by msg CSVH1001E for Dynamic LPA changes was justified or not.

Now I know it was not, because this is the way TCP/IP at 1.11 level works.

Hello list,

This exceeds the limit.

 Looking at the LPA modules and where they are loaded to, I spotted EZBTIINI
as being dynamically loaded, with a size of roughly 6A3000.

D PROG,LPA,MODNAME=EZBTIINI confirmed that the LMOD has been
(D)ynamically loaded (from TCP/IP,  I presume) and (P)age fixed.

I have two questions to the list:

1) have you get the same HealthCheck exception on your z/OS 1.11 ?

2) is this a WAD on Comm. Server IP at z/OS 1.11 level ? I RTFM
but found nothing.

Re: System symbols in batch jobs

2011-02-24 Thread Walter Marguccio
 I thought I'd share it for those interested parties who have NetView.

I use more or less the same principle to accomplish the same goal. I wrote a
simple REXX
which NetView kicks off every night at 00:00, writing a member named VARS into
one of

the JES-knownlibrary named SYS1.SYSNAME.PROCLIB:

//* -- Variables set on 24 Feb 2011
//   SET SYSNAME=PROD
//   SET ID=PR
//   SET IPLVOL=Z19R1B
//*
//   SET DD=24
//   SET MM=02
//   SET YY=11
//   SET DAY=THU
//   SET MONTH=FEB
//   SET YEAR=2011
//*
// SET DOW=4 Day Of Week
//   SET JD=11055   Julian Date
//   SET PFX=J   Dataset prefix
//* --- at 00:00:00

The REXX makes available both static and dynamic system symbols. Whoever wants
to exploit them,

must add the INCLUDE stmt in their JCL, as Alan mentioned.

 It's not pretty but it can be helpful to circumvent that annoying restriction.

Maybe is not pretty, but it is effective. Unfortunately it doesn't solve the
problem with variables not

recognized in SYSIN-type input datasets. For such cases, I use PGM=EZACFSM1.

Re: LINKLIB in use

2011-02-04 Thread Walter Marguccio
 If neither LLA nor XCFAS have their hands on old.linklib, you can
 delete the dataset.

 No. You can do a SETPROG LNKLST,UNALLOCATE to free the ENQ that
 XCFAS has and you can either stop LLA or otherwise get it to release
 the old.linklib data set. That does *NOT* mean that it is save to
 delete the data set. That does nothing to remove it from use as a
 LNKLST data set.

I agree 100%. I didn't say it is safe, I only said you can delete it, because
neither LLA not XCFAS use/ENQue it.

 In order to make it inactive as a LNKLST data set, a new LNKLST set
 must be activated and all running address spaces that started before
 activating the new LNKLST set must be told to use the new LNKLST
 set using LNKLST UPDATE. This is somewhat dangerous and should
 only be done if you are prepared to IPL.

I agree 100%. So If I were the OP, I would activate a new LNKLST01 (as he did)
and leave old.linklib where it is.

the dataset could be still in use by LLA and/or XCFAS. However, even
if you purge LLA and issue SETPROG LNKLST,UNALLOCATE (freeing
the dataset from the XCFAS), I don't think you can delete your old.linklib.
I might be wrong, but IIRC, z/OS keeps somewhere (storage ? control block ?)
the list of datasets defined in LNKLST set(s). Even if you activate LNKLST01,
I doubt you can delete old.linklib which belongs to LNKLST00.
The only way to delete old.linklib is to IPL. Beside that, old.linklib doesn't

I've followed the old, frequent thread about variables in JCL for ages,
and it never occurred to me that this program was able to did the trick.
For trivial things like create a SYSIN-type dataset for FTP or IDCAMS,
where date and time within a dataset name is required, EZACFSM1is perfect,
instead of creating, say, an ad-hoc REXX which does the same.
However, it doesn't look to me as the solution IBM recommends to solve
the 'system variable in jcl' issue, otherwise the use and scope of this pgm
would have been more widely published, and not only on a single, spare page in

How many LPARs in a ring ?

2010-05-25 Thread Walter Marguccio
I've been asked to add a 5th LPAR to an existing 4 LPAR
Hello readers,

I've been asked to add a 5th LPAR to an existing 4 LPARs basic Sysplex, with
GRS ring.
My concern is the message traffic within the ring, which might have negative
impact for
the entire plex. Also the higher number of logical CPs is a concern.
Is there a ROT which apply here ?
Is there anyone out there running a basic Sysplex in a ring configuration with
more than 4 LPARs
who can share his/her view ?

We have a z10 BC K03. GRS star, which means CF, which means Parallel Sysplex,
is not an option.

 TSO logon procs with large DD lists is also a no-no - see Toms dynamic stuff
 to help there.

Luckily we have a handful of TSO users here, and Toms dynamic stuff ia already
in place.

 Shared catalogs on HCD defined SHARED volumes generated enormous traffic.
 But you're probably already suffering all that - or not, in which case you
 won't care.

Exactly. All our catalogs are shared. I need to keep an eye on this, so far I
didn't notice
anything bad.

 I really have no idea how expensive CA-MIM is, but if performance is

 not acceptable, you may want to consider it.

No, MIM is not an option.

 With 4 systems in your ring, you are probably already pushing the limits.
That was my fear.

 I recall (years ago, before XCF) a client of mine adding a 3rd system to
 a GRS ring and the CA-1 scratch runs doubled in wall clock time due
 to catalog performance.

We have GRS via XCF. Catalogs traffic is what I fear the most.
I'll see what the GRS says, before and after.

Thanks!

Hello list,

we have a z01-BC model K03, 4 LPARs, equipped with 4 OSA Express-3 1GB Ethernet

(CHPID OSD) and 2 OSA Express-2 (CHPID OSC).

Last Sunday we had to swap our network switch with a new one, and after we
connected the cables
coming from all OSAs to the new switch, we were able to ping/telnet to the OSCs
(I had back MCS
consoles and TSO via non-SNA) but we weren't be able to ping/telnet to the OSDs
anymore.
Issuing D TCPIP,,N,DEV from the console showed all 4 devices in ACTIVE status.
Issuing a TSO ping from one LPAR to all others was successful, too.
D NET,TRL,TRLE=trle_name for our TRLEs showed ACTIVE as well.
Eventually we had to shutdown all 4 LPARs, configuring all 4 OSAs OSD off from
the Service Element,
put the same cards in Service Mode, put everything back on line, IPL and
voila', the OSAs OSD were reachable
again.

I can't believe that a sophisticated hw like the z10 and its OSA-Express cards
need such a reset action
after a switch has been swapped. My impression is that we missed a much easier
solution which could
have prevented us to shutdown an entire Sysplex and be cut off from the rest
ofthe world for two hours.

Can someone shed some light ?

 I haven't tried this, but theoretically you should be able to run
 sendmail and a custom Perl script as a local delivery agent to
 accomplish this function.

It looks like the requirements for this specific case are quite trivial.
E-mails sent to z/OS do *not* contain any attachment, the needed info

This is obviously
a manual and error prone process. Therefore I ve been asked to see if it's

to be able to handle attachments,unless I missed something.

 We have in this way, but we would like to make it permanent .

Oh, in this case I would also say you need a COLD start. This is what the book
says:

Modification: $T JOBCLASS operator command or cold start

 Subject: Re: DFHSM BCDS is going larger

 however, I now did a HSEND WAIT EXPIREBV DISPLAY SYSOUT(J) and it's
 generating a lot of records. At this time, job is still running and the
 backup log has 28.761 lines.

you could selectively expire your backup versions adding STARTKEY and ENDKEY to
the EXPIREBV command:

EXPIREBV DISPLAY|EXECUTE STARTKEY(ABC)  ENDKEY(DEF)  SYSOUT(H)

Expiring a smaller number of datasets would reduce dramatically the elapsed time
of EXPIREBV.

 Is it possible that the EXPIREBV EXECUTE is not working at all after giving
 above errors ??

I don't think so, but I would ask IBM.

Are you sure the IEFU83 is active ?

Federica,

the command diff -r is your friend:

diff  -r  /u/sourcedir  /u/targetdir

Appending ' /u/results.txt' to the above command you can direct the output of
diff to
a file for further reference.

 Acrually I have to compare two ROOT FILE SYSTEM

Federica,

if both systems where each ROOT file are active (which means both ROOTs
are mounted) then it is not possible to mount one of the ROOT on one of the
systems
in read only in order to compare, unless all of your Unix System Services files
are shared
amongs your Sysplex.

But, in case you have LPAR A active (which has an active ROOT_A mounted at '/')
and LPAR B is inactive, you can mount the ROOT_B belonging to LPAR B under
LPAR A under /service and then from LPAR A issue:

diff -r  //service/  u/myuser/results.txt

How is your environment setup ?

Re: HCD Activate with new LPAR

- Original Message
From: R.S. r.skoru...@bremultibank.com.pl

 The following scenario: z10, z/OS 1.9, several LPARs.
 I just modified my IODF. Added CF LPAR and connected it using just-added
 ICP channels to existing OS LPAR (X). I used candidate LPAR (named '*').

Question: can I activate the changes dynamically ?

Radoslaw,

I did it at our shop with a less modern HW/SW combination than yours. We had
a z890 with 3 LPARs in basic Sysplex, z/OS 1.7 on all but the sandbox LPAR, at
1.9 level.
We had to add our 4th LPAR and we wanted to avoid a POR.

I can't tell you if activating dynamically a CF-like LPAR differs from
activating a OS-like one,
but can't see why it should be different.

You can surely find more details in 'z/OS Planned Outage Avoidance Checklist'

Re: Startup of All STCs After IPL

From: George Rodriguez rodrigu...@palmbeach.k12.fl.us

 The only problem with this method is that I sometimes need a wait
 between commands... Is there anyone else using this method? If not, are
 you willing to share whatever you use?

For startup, as well as shutdown, we use the AUTOIPL package from Zhou Guanghui.
(file 623 at www.cbttape.org). It has some very good features like WAIT, REPLY,
WTO/WTOH.

The only drawback is that it can't be started under the master scheduler. So,
for
shutdown purposes I use the COMMAND package (already mentioned by others)
to close JES2 and issue Z EOD.

 has anyone else begun having problems with searching IBM-MAIN posts in Google
 Groups?
 I always used it because: a) It kept some load off the archive servers; and
 b) It was faster anyway.
 These days, though, it seems as if it has forgotten all of the old posts.

I had problem, too. About three months ago I searched something like 'FlashCopy
vs. Concurrent Copy'
using the Google Group, and found several posts. The same search three months
later brought almost nothing.
Ever since I search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html .
