Using Braille Embosser with a Mini Mac

2014-12-28 Thread Bill Gallik
A friend has a list of commands listed in a text file and would like to
print them out on her Braille embosser; she had been using the embosser on a
Windows laptop with Ducksberry but that's no longer available for her.

What does she need to be able to use her Braille embosser to produce a sheet
with the desired information?

I'm presuming she'll need to install a driver for the embosser and load some
sort of Braille Translation software so she can do this. As far as
installing the driver I'm well versed in that sort of thing. But, since I'm
not able to read Braille (effectively) I do not personally own an embosser
so have no idea what sort of Braille Translation software might be out there
for Macs. Would someone, anyone, please advise?

Thanks Much!

Re: how to calculate several cells in a row

2014-12-28 Thread Bill Gallik
I can't speak with any certainty if white space cannot be interspersed on a
Mac system, but it makes no difference in Excel on Windows. In short, the
expressions:

   SUM(A1:F1)
   SUM ( A1 : F1 )

are equivalent and syntactically correct (the second sample has spaces
interspersed throughout).

`No, no,' said Scrooge. `Oh, no, kind Spirit. say he will be spared.'
`If these shadows remain unaltered by the Future, none other of my race,'

RadioLogicDJ Accessibility Question

2015-01-02 Thread Bill Gallik
There has been some discussion in this list about RadioLogicDJ, I have some
questions concerning this program:

1) Can a totally blind person work effectively with this program?
2) Are there provisions within the program for streaming or is it necessary
to use NiceCast?
3) Is the feature set of this program equivalent to Station Playlist Studio

Re: Making ringtones

2015-02-07 Thread Bill Gallik
I'm answering this from the perspective of an iPhone user so if I'm all wet
with this, please pardon me.

I use an app named Ringmaker Pro and it's only $1.99 -- well, certainly not
almost $10 for sure. What I consider the major drawback to the RingMaker Pro
app is that you are limited to 1 second increments. There are times this
limitation will cause to reconsider what segment of a song you cut for a
ringtone.

Let me try to be more clear here. Imagine you want a segment of a song, but
the part you want to cut is a hair after the 37th second and a tidbit before
the 38th second; there are no hundredths or tenths of a segment in RingMaker
Pro and that might sound very trivial, but it might cause you to reconsider
what part of a song you cut for a ringtone.

RingMaker Pro has the following features:

- Can set starting point (in seconds increments) of cut
- Can set length (in seconds) of cut up to 40 seconds
- Can specify Fade In/Fade Out

First; let me confess that I'm not yet a Mac user, but that's about to
change very shortly as I purchased a Mac Mini yesterday from the Apple
store and it's scheduled to be delivered this coming Tuesday. And (do I
get ANY points for this at all?), I've been an iPhone user since late
2012.

I'm sending this specific question for a friend who is trying quite hard
to continue her DJ career using her Mac Mini rather than a Windows PC.
Heretofore, she's been using Station Playlist to stream her webcast on the
web radio station server. She is totally blind and has understood that
RadioLogicDJ is not completely accessible. She's now hoping to use DJay
but is having difficulty creating a Playlist with iTunes.

Can anybody offer any suggestions?

I know how easy it is to create a Playlist on an iPhone so I am a bit
surprised that she's having problems on her Mac Mini; but since I don't
have mine yet, I cannot venture into that routine to ascertain what may be
wrong.

All help will be most appreciated!

Much Thanks!

both from the main site and the access site even though I never actually
use the access site. Both with Audible and Amazon, I much prefer to use
the main site. So I'm a little puzzled as to how one person could see a
captcha while another doesn't. You do have to sign in with your username
and password and you do have to enter the claim code. You even can get
around reading a claim code by having people email your gift cards
instead of sending them by snail mail or giving them to you when the
person involved uses email. It's not that i'm doubting your statement
that there was a captcha; I personally simply don't see any request for
one and never have in my own experience. Maybe they have started doing it
for some accounts and others will follow though that doesn't totally make
sense to me either.

Secondly, some other form of security besides username and password in
some instances is not, in my opinion, overkill. At least from what I know
about passwords being stolen or hacked, i don't think it's overkill. We
can argue about whether that other form should be captcha r not and we
can argue about whether or not there should be an accessible alternative
and what that alternative should be, but i don't really think we can
argue that something in addition to username and password is overkill, at
least in some situations.

It is true that Amazon does require captchas in some instances; I rarely
run into this on Amazon but I think when you set up an account and
perhaps when you change your password you might have to enter a captcha,
but I'm not going to change mine just to test this out. There may be some
other instances.

Hi,

No, that shouldn’t affect anything. I have multiple devices accessing my
iCloud account simultaneously both at home and at work. I also have a gMail
account through Google App, a Pop account through my ISP, and two other iMap
accounts for other duties all configured through Mail with no busy problems
at all. What kind of router are you using? Are you connected via WiFi or
ethernet?

Hi,

I haven’t heard of many experiencing this, so, I’m guessing that it has
something to do with your personal configuration or situation. That machine
is plenty powerful enough to handle the job. Some questions to determine
what may be causing the issues:

1. What Mail view do you use? Modern or Classic?
2. Do you have multiple Mail accounts? i.e.., gMail, iCloud, local ISP?
3. What protocol do your accounts use? iMap, Pop, Exchange?
4. Is your Preview pane enabled or disabled?
5. Which navigation method do you normally use? That is, navigate to
message then VO-j to read it or navigate to the message then hit return to
read it?

• If you have multiple accounts, try disabling all but one of them. Does
the busy tendency go away? If so, turn on other accounts one at a time to
try to determine which account may be causing the problem. You disable
accounts in Mail Prefs, in the Accounts pane. Select the accounts from the
Accounts table, then uncheck the “Enable this Account” checkbox.

• If your Preview pane is enabled, try disabling it to see if that makes a
difference.

Action Completed Sound Effect in iTunes

2015-03-04 Thread Bill Gallik
I've been helping a friend add songs to a playlist but something seems to be
askew on her Mac Mini. I've been coaching her in using the Search Music
Library for songs she wants to add to her specific playlist; when she
selects the desired song from the resulting list she is placed into her
quite extensive music library (over 23,000 items) on the line for that
song -- so far, so good -- she then interacts with the My Music table,
opens the context menu, selects the Add To Playlist menu item and moves
into the ensuing sub-menu and selects the specific playlist. Here's the
issue; when I do this, I get a pleasant sound effect confirming that when I
press RETURN the song has indeed been added to my desired playlist -- she
does not.

I had her open the VoiceOver Utility, select the Sounds Category and make
certain the Mute Sound Effects checkbox is not checked. It was not so I
advised her to check and uncheck it just in case something was awry in the
configuration data schemes -- this did not help.

I've since opened the System Preferences dialogs for iTunes hoping to find
some type of setting that might silence that Added To Playlist
confirmation sound effect but I've had no success.

Can anybody offer some suggestions or thoughts as to why the confirmation
sound effect for successfully adding an item to a playlist is functioning on
my Mac Mini and not on hers? We both have 2.6 GB Mac Minis running
Yosemite.

There just has to be some setting that I have enabled or she has disabled,
other sound effects are working on her Mac.

Mac Mini in Trouble

2015-02-22 Thread Bill Gallik

Help!!!

My new Mac Mini seems to be totally messed up.

When I try to boot, I hear nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Then, after executing a PROPTIONCOMMAND while pressing the power
button to reboot, the start-up chord plays -- again, again, again and again.

Can anybody offer any suggestions (other than taking my Mac in for repair).
At this point, my plan is to get it in to an Apple Hospital to get well,
but if I can avoid that I would certainly would prefer that.

Did you press command F5 to start voice over?

When I got my new Macmini late last year, I chose the wrong language and
it took a while to get it to speak English.

When you turn your Mac mini on for the first time, you should should press

Confused with DropBox on Mac Mini

2015-04-14 Thread Bill Gallik
I’ve been trying to set up a DropBox shared folder between my PC, Mac Mini,
both my iPhones and a friend’s Mac Mini. There hasn’t been any problems
between the PC and my iPhones, but I can’t seem to locate files in the shared
folder from my Mac nor my friend’s Mac.

I seem to be able to locate the files in the shared folder via Safari links,
but those files do not show up when using Finder on the Mac.

Suggestions, please!!!

Re: Interact with text

2015-04-02 Thread Bill Gallik
There is a Custom button in the Verbosity category, but remember that if you
adjust the Interact with Text to remain silent in the mail client the effect
will carry over in to all other apps as well.

  Hi Daniel.
Well, no matter if you set your verbosity to low, medium or high, you're
going to hear at least the subject of the email message when you press enter.
I have never used VO J for reading emails.
I also don't believe there is a way of turning this off in verbosity at all.
Interact with text does not only apply to the mail application.

So, after hearing that all above, I'd rather hear just interact with text.

If you know what I mean. Of course, if you know of any ways where I don't

I hope this makes sense

Hi all, this might sound sort of weird to say but is there any chance

I was wondering if this could possibly be done through the VO utility,
speech and Pronunciation tab.

The goal of this is to reduce verbosity of speech from Voiceover. If it
can't be done then don't worry that's fine but it would be cool if its possible
because it could mean getting through messages that bit faster.

Re: How to view email messages individually on the Mac.

2015-05-22 Thread Bill Gallik
Hi all;

If I may, I’d like to offer another solution presented in this thread.

As some of you may know, the first column in the “Messages Table” is a
“Disclosure Triangle.” If you focus on that field in any given line, selecting
the right arrow () will expand the thread so each message in the line appears
as a “stand alone” message — still sorted according to the conversation
parameter. The one problem here is that I don’t know of any way to recognize
an “unopened thread” as such. But if you suspect a mubject to be one of a
number of messages in a thread, selecting “” in the “Disclosure Triangle” will
expand that particular thread.

Conversely, should you choose to delete an entire thread in one fell swoop,
simply use the ““ character on the Disclosure Triangle” to contract all
messages in that into a single entry in the table and then COMMAND+DELETE
will get that job done.

Excuse me, but I made an error in my prior message on this thread.

Rather than using the “” and ““ characters on a “Disclosure Triangle,” use
the COMMAND+OPTION+SPACE to toggle a thread between expanded and collapsed.

My apologies for any inconvenience my initial post may have caused!

Anti-Virus et al for Mac

I’m interested in acquiring “protection” for my Mac Mini; this includes anti

sound protection. Does anybody on this list have any recommendations?

Curious About Checkbook/Checkbook Pro

2015-10-29 Thread Bill Gallik
I’ve been looking for an OSX app that is generally similar to the Windows
“Talking Checkbook” and have found “Checkbook” and “Checkbook Pro” so far.
After reading the descriptions for these apps that the “Pro” version is
probably more than I need. I do have several questions about both or either
versions:

- Is anyone out here a user of either version?
- Are these apps effectively developed to work with VoiceOver?
- Is customer support genuinely responsive to the requirements of blind
customers?

El Capitan - Upgrade or Clean Install

2015-11-12 Thread Bill Gallik
I’ve been keeping my mind open to various discussions concerning installation
of El Capitan and do have a question that may initiate additional such
discussion. I wonder if installing El Capitan as an upgrade or as a “clean

And then, there’s the question as how to perform a “clean install?"

2015-11-07 Thread Bill Gallik
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I suspect this VoiceOver configuration is desired
so that another sound source might be channeled through the opposite side?

If this is the case, is the suggested solution still feasible? Just thinking
aloud!

Seeking VO Friendly Checkbook App

2015-09-15 Thread Bill Gallik
I am looking for checkbook software that’s VO friendly. Earlier this morning I
installed “Checkbook HD Free,” but found it extremely inaccessible.
Thankfully, I did install the free version. Hopefully, someone can advise me of
a far more suitable app for my purposes.

I should add that I do not require the ability to print checks from this app as
I will be using the app primarily as an online check register. But if anybody
can suggest a program that could additionally print to standard checks, I would
certainly be receptive!

Re: Apple car, anyone?

2015-09-18 Thread Bill Gallik
This thread regarding ACV’s begs the question; when will the “Star Trek”
transporters be available? Just think, sitting in a cafe in New York City
discussing the Yankees prospects and in the blink of an eye being transported
to the ticket line in California in time to take in an afternoon game against
the Angels!

The question is then, would the “reconstructed you” really be you or only a
clone?

Personally, I find the prospect of a safely self-driving vehicle quite inviting!

Using LOGITECH Headset for Face Time

I’m using a LogiTech USB headset on my Mac mini; this headset has a mike boom.
When I attempt to make a Face Time phone call the person to whom I’m talking
comes through the internal speaker, how do I direct Face Time to direct
conversation exclusively through the headset - input and output alike?

Peculiar Scenario Playing Out in Mail

2015-11-22 Thread Bill Gallik
‘ve been encountering what I consider peculiar behavior in the standard e-mail
app. Here is what seems to be happening:

1) Interact with Message Table
2) Place focus in “Subject” column
3) VO+LeftArrow to identify if on a multi-item thread
4) VO+RightArrwo back to Subject column
5) RightArrow to expand multi-item thread
6) DownArrow to first item in current thread
7) Hit ENTER to read that item
8) COMMAND+DELETE to, what else, delete currently opened item
9) Repeat steps 7 and 8 until thread is exhausted

So far, so good; but quite often, after exhausting the thread, I find that
Table Interaction has been cancelled and I must repeat the VO+SHIFT+DownArrow
to resume interacting with Message Table.

It seems this has also happened while not in a thread but rather after reading
and deleting a number of “stand alone” messages. It’s just that this
phenomenon is so consistently reproducable given the thread scenario above.

I’m using a 2.6 GHz Mac mini with OSX 10.10.5 (Yosemite).

I can’t add much more to this other than to say that I am a relative new comer
to Mac computing having bought this Mac mini from last February.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What To Do About Constant "Mail Busy"

I am still using Yosemite on a Mac Mini; one annoyance that manifests far too

Of course, I’m only speculating but I suspect Apple did not strip the
executable which would render that software much more vulnerable to “reverse

Re: VoiceOver Turning Off in Inn Box

2016-02-24 Thread Bill Gallik
A couple of thoughts concerning this problem.

First, I assume you executed a + several times while in mail to
ascertain if toggling VO on/off was enabled.

Second, I wonder if a problem I’m having in mail is not directly related to
your problem. Very, very often I find that - when cycling through open apps —
settling in mail consistently reports “mail busy.” I find it necessary to
toggle VO off and on again. The “mail busy” typically goes away upon
reactivating VO.

OK, I’ll take your word for this.

I recall that several years ago there was such a “crash string” affecting JAWS

Documentation of VO Voices

2016-02-29 Thread Bill Gallik
All,

Can anyone advise me as to whether or not there is any documentation explaining
what is the scope of any Voice Over category (i.e., Status is obvious but
others are not quite).

Some time ago I posted to the list concerning a problem with unspoken “T” when
composing an e-mail message. A kind soul advised me to change the voice, but I
wasn’t sure just which voice category to change. Several minutes ago I changed
the “Content Category” from Samantha Compact to Tom and, sure enough, typing a
“T” is now clearly announced.

Thanks to that kind soul!

Re: Apple's headphone scam

2016-01-20 Thread Bill Gallik
I have to wonder if Apple is really planning on changing the headphone jack. I
also wonder if the eventual iPhone 7 will come complete with the necessary
audio jack adapter included?

But the bottom line to me is this, if Apple does incorporate an alternative
connection to the current jack do people truly believe it is only to pry
additional dollars from the pockets of a remarkably loyal customer base? Or,
as I personally believe to be the case, to provide a technically superior
feature?

I have no reason nor evidence to believe that Apple is foolish enough to make a
technical alteration solely for the purpose of forcing loyal customers to be
required to part with additional monies. For my money, if Apple alters the
headphone jack I audio believe they are doing to offer an improved experience.
I recall when the 35 MM jack was introduced several decades ago, the proponents
of the formerly preponderant quarter inch jack likewise protested (although not
quite so loudly). For my money, I’ll patiently wait to see what Apple has
indeed done and pass judgment after experiencing what most likely be an
improvement.

Web Page Form Fields Constantly Dimmed

2016-02-16 Thread Bill Gallik
Good Tuesday Morning,

I’ve run into an issue on the BMO-Harris “Bill Pay” page; the problem is that
when I attempt to use the “Pay A Single Bill” scenario several of the required
fields (date, amount) remain dimmed no matter what I try to do to remedy the
situation. Other fields (payee, paying account, category) are readily accessed.

A friend has told me that although VO is reading the field labels the focus is
not truly on the given field. Does anybody have a solution for this anomaly?

Silent "T" in Yosemite

2016-02-17 Thread Bill Gallik
Good Evening to All on the Macvionaries List

I’m not at all certain what changes I may have made, but when typing on my Mac
Mini neither the lower nor upper case “T” is spoken. I’m certain this is a
relatively recent development because I’m sure I’d have noticed it much earlier
than just last week.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Kindly “Thank You” to anyone offering suggestions!

Re: Record your iPad or iPhone screen

2016-02-18 Thread Bill Gallik
Just thought I’d pass along a tip when recording from an iOS device that a few
may not be aware of and could benefit.

When locating the item you want recorded (a song, a screen, or whatever) turn
speech off (3-finger double tap) but leave VoiceOver enabled. What this does
is retain the focus on the activation button — as this is a wonderful feature
of VO - and will allow one to activate that button with the normal double tap
while not bringing along the VO verbalization.

Hope this helps somebody!

Re: Any comments on Apple's position against unreasonable search

2016-02-19 Thread Bill Gallik
A much wiser man than myself is quoted as saying, “A society that is willing to
surrender privacy for the sake of security shall have neither.”

I completely support the position Tim Cook and Apple has taken in this matter.

The real question in this matter should be - why isn’t our government willing
to take the steps to bring the individuals driving this mad terrorism to
justice? I’m sure western governments are quietly taking measures to make
those persons accountable, but I believe we need a number more of Bin Laden
like operations to “help” those folks understand the errors of their ways. And
more importantly, that the United States will not tolerate this insanity!

Re: Checkbook/Checkbook Pro

2016-03-21 Thread Bill Gallik
I can’t really say how Splasm is going to design the check printing feature,
but I seriously doubt they would implement it in such a way as to allow users
to completely print a check on a blank sheet of paper. This is because the
routing, account and whatever that third number is called is printed via
magnetic ink for automation. I suppose one could purchase a printer that would
include magnetic ink, but I presume that would be a prohibitively expensive
purchase; one that most of us could not afford.

The usual process for printing checks via computer software requires the
purchase of checks referred to as “Quick Books-like” stock. These are letter
sized sheets incorporating a blank check at the top with perforations to permit
ready detachment from the bottom two thirds of the “check sheet.”

If it were up to me, I might propose a check printing design that would include
an option to use “standard checks” to be printed on a photo printer or some
such printer that could appropriately handle stock as small as a standard check.

How to Route Calls Through Headphones

2016-04-30 Thread Bill Gallik
Good Morning All,

I have a Mac mini equipped with USB headphones and have my iPhone configured so
I can receive calls through the Mac. The problem I am trying to resolve is
that when I take (or initiate I presume) calls the incoming conversation is
routed through the Mac internal speaker. Well, I should add that I also have
external speakers plugged into the audio jack on the Mac so incoming
conversation is not truly routed through the internal speaker, but rather
through the external speakers.

Naturally, I’d prefer that incoming conversation route through the USB
headphones, how do I accomplish this?

Hey Gang,

I did not get the impression anybody was suggesting that this thread is “Off
Topic” for the MacVisionaries list. I got the impression the comment was being
made so those of us who do read some of our e-mail via a Mac would have that
understanding - that the message had been initiated on the MacVisionaries list

So far as I’m concerned that was simply a courtesy “heads up” notice and in no

Re: Two Devices On The Same Apple Id Questions

2016-07-03 Thread Bill Gallik
To answer your e-mail concern; the answer is that you can indeed direct each
device to interact with only one of the accounts set up per device. On the
iPhone, it’s simply a matter of deactivating the account you do not want that
device accessing. I haven’t looked at the e-mail settings on my Mac Mini since
I turned off my Charter account but I do know I am not getting e-mail on the
Mac from that account even though the account has been fully configured.

browse the Finder SideBar and land on the DropBox folder this terribly
inaccessible DropBox app is launched rather than letting me open the DropBox
folder and continue browsing.

Can anybody offer some advice? I’d prefer to use the DropBox folder like any
other folder on the system.

Thanks!

How Do I Send An Invitation to Share A DropBox Folder

2017-02-02 Thread Bill Gallik
I’m trying to send an invitation to a friend to share a DropBox folder in my
folder structure but can’t figure out how to do this. Can anybody help?

I should add that on my Windows PC the menu includes a “Share” option, but
because my Windows software is so out-dated DropBox will not allow me to do
that. My only real option is to send the invite from my Mac Mini.

My sincerest “Thank You” to Andrew, Des and Ramy; I went to the Mosen web site

in this extremely well written document. Your suggestions and supporting

Re: How Do I Send An Invitation to Share A DropBox Folder

2017-02-03 Thread Bill Gallik
To both Helga and ET; a very sincere “Thank You” for the suggestions. What I’m
having trouble understanding is that I did try using the iOS app to share the
desired folder and when I tried ET’s suggestion it looked very similar to the
link sent via the iOS app. I’m beginning to wonder if the recipient is not
exercising the sent link properly.

And, in fact, when I opened the context menu (VO+SHIFT-M) there was also a
“Share” option which I did try to use. The e-mail message that resulted
appeared to have only an image named for the folder I have been trying to share!

But, to both of you, thank you so very much for your suggestions!

Looking for High Quality PDF App

2017-01-24 Thread Bill Gallik
Pardon me for asking this question once again, but this old brain doesn’t
remember as well as it once did; I’m looking for a high quality PDF app for my
Mac Mini and cannot recall the several that were recommended in my last
inquiry. Would anybody please be kind enough to remind me of these apps?

Sincere “Thanks!"

Re: Imessage strangeness.

2017-01-27 Thread Bill Gallik
It used to be the case with my AT service (that the Contact needed to
identify “iPhone” rather than simply “Mobile”), but I’ve noticed over the past
year or so the system seems to identify iPhone addressees whether or not I’ve
identified their mobile phone as an iPhone or not. I’m certain this is only
the case if messaging to another AT iPhone customer. Just thought this may
prove useful.

Thanks for the advice. The last time I installed an “All-In-One”

this Mac Mini if I hope to convert scanned documents into any sort of
text-based files.
Thanks again!

Setting Up Document Scanning with Epson XP 420 All-in-One

2017-02-11 Thread Bill Gallik
I have an Epson XP 420 Series printer/scanner/copier and have no clue as how to
configure this device so I’ll be able to scan documents with it. I’ve opened
the “Epson Scan Setting app” only to discover there isn’t much I can do within
this program. On the off-chance that the scanner drivers/software may have
been configured when I initially installed this network ‘all-in-one’ printer I
like wise opened the “Epson Scanning app” only to learn it isn’t apparently
configured. Can anybody offer me a suggestion as how to best pursue this
matter.

I’m using MacOS Sierra on a Mac Mini.

I would certainly appreciate any advice.

Thanks in advance!

FineReader OCR Pro vs. OCR Kit

2017-02-13 Thread Bill Gallik
I’m looking to install an OCR package on my Mac Mini to facilitate scanning
paper documents and photocopy generated PDFs. In searching in the MacOS store
for “FineReader” I got two results. The first is “FineReader OCR Pro”
($119.95) and “OCR Kit” ($35.95); my question to this list is this; is the
first worth almost $85.00 more than the second?

Have any of you had experience with Finereader OCR Pro or OCR Kit?

Has anybody had experience with both?

Or, possibly, there are yet other OCR packages that my search didn’t render;
other packages that may very well to be a “better bang for the buck” than
either of the two I’ve identified in this e-mail?

I can afford the $119.95 for the ABBY product, but I don’t really care to pay
for functionality that will likely never be used. I’m looking for this for my
personal home use so “state of the art” isn’t really essential. But then, I
don’t want to buy the less costly option only to find that it will not offer
functions such as letting me open image files online to convert to something a
screen reader can recognize.

I hope I’ve outlined my dilemma here satisfactorily and would appreciate any
thoughts, suggestions and related experiences in this matter.

Sincer thanks (in advance)

Strange Issue with Mail Preferences

2017-01-20 Thread Bill Gallik
I’m looking for any suggestions to resolve an unusual problem in setting the
“Spell-Check” property in Mail Preferences.

A friend had the property set to “As You Type” and wanted to change it to
“Never.” I walked her through the “Mail Preferences” sheet; having her select
the “Composing Button” in the Tool Bar and then selecting “Never” in the Pop-Up
for Spell-Check. I then advised her to close the window with +W, but
when she tried to compose a mail message with an intentionally misspelled word
the spell checking screen still appeared.

She is using a Mac Mini (2.6 GHz) with Sierra installed.

Does anybody have any thoughts on this. I should add that I repeated the exact
steps on my Mac Mini and spelll check is naught coming up for me. (for thoze
that are able to vizhually read this message, yes, I’ve intentionally put
spelling airrors in these final lynes)! ;-)

App for DropBox

2016-08-21 Thread Bill Gallik
All,

After opening the “Preferences Dialog” for this “App for DropBox” I believe the
trouble I’m having is that this element is a third party piece of garbage that
I now want to uninstall from my Mac mini.

How does one go about uninstalling unwanted software?

How do I go about getting the “real DropBox” installed?

Thank You!

Re: Here is the Text of the User Manual for the Nearby Explorer, for iOS, GPS Navigation App

2016-08-21 Thread Bill Gallik
To all our friends living outside the United States and Canada,

I believe this was developed and is provided by the American Printing House for
the Blind (APH).

Perhaps I’m naive, but I have to believe that arrangements could be made so
that similar organizations in other countries could be allowed to “port” the
app to digital maps and languages of such countries. I suggest you may want to
contact such similar organizations in your countries to request that they
pursue this. It certainly would be nice if all blind persons had access to as
many of these sorts of apps as possible!

More Questions Concerning Express VPN

2016-09-02 Thread Bill Gallik
To those recommending “Express VPN,” I have some further questions on the

Does Express VPN serve as a general anti-malware utility?

If I install Express VPN will I be able to get rid of any and all Avast

Is Express VPN reasonably accessible via BoiceOver?

Is Express VPN a “resource hog” in any sense?

Re: Application for making ringtones for iphone & android phones using El Capitan?

2016-09-26 Thread Bill Gallik
I believe Ringtone Maker Pro is something like $1.99. You do have to somehow
get the resulting ringtone into your iTunes library on your Mac or PC, but this
part is quite straight forward; after saving the newly created ringtone you
have an option to send an e-mail with the ringtone attached to an e-mail
account that’s active on the target Mac/PC. At that point you simply open the
attachment MRA file and the ringtone is loaded into your iTunes library where
it will be available to load back to your iPhone via sync.

There are a couple of caveats I must include here:

1) On a Windows PC you need to have iTunes set as the default program for MRA
files so that opening the newly created/e-mailed ringtone will be loaded into
the iTunes structures (yes, it will “magically” copied to the right locations).
2) For Android phones you’ll need a conversion program (i.e., Switch) to
convert the M4A/MRA file into an MP3 file. This will require an additional
software library to create the MP3 on your PC. Since I don’t have an Android
phone I have no idea how to get a ringtone installed on said device, but as I
understand Android can be linked to a PC as just another drive I should think
this should be reasonably convenient using a COPY and PASTE.

How Are "Home Made" Ringtones Installed

2016-08-26 Thread Bill Gallik
I’ve created some “Home Made Ringtones” (via Ringtone Maker Pro) and want to
install them on my iPhone. When I was using my Windows PC as the support
computer for my iPhone this was fairly straight-forward - at least with that
version of iTunes. I am now using my Mac Mini as the support computer for my
iPhone and iPad II. But for the life of me, I can’t figure out how to get
those ringtones installed on the iPhone.

Could anyone please offer some suggestions?

Searching for Express VPN

2016-08-28 Thread Bill Gallik
OK, I’ve had my interest piqued concerning “Express VPN.” But when I open “App
Store” for Mac and search for “Express VPN” I get the following:

- VPN Shield
- Red VPN

Now, of course, I’m looking for a replacement for Avast on my Mac and not my
iPhone 6. Are either of the above what I want to install? Or, should I be
looking for something entirely different for my Mac?

Follow-Up on Recent Bluetooth Speaker Connectivity

2016-09-27 Thread Bill Gallik
First, thanks to the folks that offered their insights as how to pair a
bluetooth speaker to my Mac Mini! Your help is very much appreciated.

The crux of the issue was that I still had the speaker paired with my iPhone 6
and once I removed that pairing the speaker readily appeared in the device
table on my Mac and I was able to pair it.

Re: Application for making ringtones for iphone & android phones using El Capitan?

2016-09-27 Thread Bill Gallik
First of all, I need to correct a minor error I made in my original post; the
name of the app is ringtone maker Pro.

As to the question about where it will begin creating the ringtone from a sound
source, it does begin at the very beginning. However, there are very accessible
features to allow you to start at a point in the sound source where you prefer.
The app will also allow you to create a 40 seconds ringtone to as low as a five
second ringtone/alarm. It may be less than five seconds, but I'm not sure
because I have never tried to go lower than a five second tone.

The process is as follows:
– Naturally, you open up the app.
– You select a sound source – probably a song on your eye device.
– There is also a provision for recording a new sound source.
– You are then placed in a dialogue where you are able to select various
features such as beginning point and endpoint as well as fade in and fade out.
– I think it is a very accessible as a well designed and usable app.
– When finished, you hit the save button.
– After saving the tone, there is a share button that will allow you to email
the tone as an attachment.

Disclaimer: I have absolutely no financial stake in the successful marketing of
this app!

Re: Application for making ringtones for iphone & android phones using El Capitan?

2016-09-26 Thread Bill Gallik
I use an iOS app named ring maker Pro from the Apple App Store. You execute
this app on the iPhone or iPad and then send it to your Mac as an email or text
message attachment. You then open it on the Mac (or PC) and iTunes will load it
into your iTunes folders where it will then be available to download when you
do a sink from your Mac (or PC). When you get this app, it will be named rmaker
pro rather than ringmaker pro.

Using Audacity when totally blind

2016-10-12 Thread Bill Gallik
All,

I am asking for some advice trying to use Audacity on my Mac. I am trying to
cut out a 5.23 second snippet of an audio file but am having difficulty trying
to get those start and links fields appropriately filled in. Can anybody offer
me any suggestions?

I was hoping that I could simply enter act with the text fields and fill in the
numbers as appropriate. This is proving to be extremely difficult!

Re: Apple Guides for Installing New MacOS

2016-10-21 Thread Bill Gallik
“Thank you” to both Dolores and Phil for your helpful responses.

My plan is to execute a “clean install” and since I’ve never installed a MacOS
before I want to procede with all due caution!

Apple Guides for Installing New MacOS

2016-10-21 Thread Bill Gallik
Good Morning All;

I’ve been searching AppleVis.com for guides/documentation for installing a new
OS (e.g., Sierra in this case) but have been frustrated in my efforts. I’m not
interested in a podcast, I want to read an actual document. Can anybody offer
me a link or other suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: new file system

2016-11-26 Thread Bill Gallik
I can’t imagine that Windows would be unable (BootCamp) to run on a non-Intel
architecture. The user interface software typically does not interact with the
platform hardware; the connection between the user interface
(Windows/MacOS/Unix) and the hardware architecture is implemented via drivers
and I’d be surprised if Microsoft doesn’t have drivers available for non-Intel
architectures.

When I worked for Bell Labs we had Unix running on various hardware platforms
such as PDP, Vax, Intel, 3B2, 3B5 and 3B20S/D. Each of these hardware platforms
had varying architectures and the system calls from the OS depended on the
machine-specific drivers to function properly.

Re: new file system

2016-11-26 Thread Bill Gallik
I honestly didn’t get the impression that Simon was “getting hot under the
collar.” Rather, seems to me he was merely manifesting some concern that tools
he uses might no longer be available.

It’s improbable that those that are uncomfortable with change will not have
such concerns; there’s no harm done in looking for assurance!
