Re: email address in mail header

2017-08-15 Thread Christina C.
Andrew,

I appreciate your help. I am able to interact with the header. The problem
that I was having is that only a name was displayed after Vo announced
embedded. An email address is not displayed. I performed a VO plus shift plus
M on the name but the email address was not in the context menu. However, I
interacted one more time with the name of the sender and then performed the Vo
plus shift plus M command. Then the drop down menu contained the email
address. ☺️ So, your advice did help b/c I hadn’t thought to interact one more
time since I could already access the name of the sender and thought I was as
interacted as I could be. ☺️

email address in mail header

2017-08-15 Thread Christina C.
Hello,

In the header, on my Mac, in apple mail, I cant’ figure out how to find out
what the email address is of the sender is. i have a suspicious email and I’d
like to see what address the email is sent from. Mail help said to point the
mouse pointer at the name and some options would show up. That is no help to
me. ☺️ I’d be very grateful for any instructions on how to get an email
address from the mail header.

Thanks,
Christina

Thanks, That’s a great idea. Also, in the View menu via Vo plus M There is a
Disable/enable filter option. It also states that the shortcut key is command
plus L. 樂 I just have no idea how I created one in the first place. haha.

Again, Thanks,

filters in mail on mac?

2017-08-10 Thread Christina C.
Hello,

Somehow I filtered my inbox on my Mac. I have no idea how I did this. I read
the help section for mail about filters and it mentions a filter button. I
could not find a filter button anywhere in mail. The only thing I can think of
is that I was using the search field to find messages. maybe I did something
there when I was arrowing through the drop down menu of options from that
search field. I can’t figure it out. I was finally able to get rid of the
filter via the view menu. There was an option to turn off filter.

Can anyone tell me how I may have filtered my messages so that I can avoid this
in the future. Or if anyone can tell me how to create a filter with VO than
maybe I can try to figure out what I did. Thanks so much.

Re: Naming Your Personal Digital Assistant

2017-01-29 Thread Christina C.
Haha. Last week I tried using “computer” as the wake word for the Amazon Echo.
I quickly discovered that I didn’t like it because, when one has to yell
“computer" over a noisy household, the “p” in computer lends itself to spittle.
Yuck! I switched the wake word back to Alexa.

automatically add files to iTunes

2016-10-18 Thread Christina C.
Hello,

So, sometimes when I download an audio file my Mac automatically unzips the
file and starts playing it in iTunes and then it is added to my library both on
my computer and on iCloud. I obviously want these files on my Mac but what if I
don’t want them in my iCloud music library? Any ideas? These audio files are
not music and so that just messes with my brain to see them in my music library
on my phone. :) I only need to get these files onto my Mac so that I can put
them on my victor reader stream, or into dropBox.

Thanks,
Christina

In Safari how do I get a video to stop playing

Hi all,

I thought there was a quick way to stop a video that starts playing. Sometimes

figure out how to turn a video off and the only way seems to be to close the

Re: got VO to read alt text for pics in tweetings main timeline

2016-04-27 Thread Christina C.
Mary, I can confirm, that so far, making the change in tweetings look and
feel/ in line images to thumbnail has not had any negative annoying
consequences, such as hearing image, image, image. Everything sounds the same
as it did before, except when someone has added an image description it is read
out in my timeline. It is read out as a separate item flicked to. For example,
If I am flicking left through my timeline, reading from oldest to newest, I
will flick to an image description. All I hear is VO read out the description
and VO does not say image description or anything like that. I only hear what
alt text was added. Then when I flick left VO Reads out the tweet of the person
who posted the image. Of course, this will be in reverse if you are flicking
right from newest to oldest. The Tweet of the sender will be read then the
image described will be read next. I hope that helps and not confuses. I
confirmed with sighted help, that all of the other inline photos without alt
text seem to be ignored by VO when flicking through the timeline. I hope you
have as good of an experience as I have. Of course, it’s been less than 24
hours since I changed this setting but so far so good. :)

Re: got VO to read alt text for pics in tweetings main timeline

2016-04-26 Thread Christina C.
So far I haven’t experienced that, or heard VO saying image or anything weird
like that. However, I don’t follow more than a handful of people and I’m not
sure if I’ve come across a tweet yet with an image and not a GIF or video. I’ll
report when I know for sure.

got VO to read alt text for pics in tweetings main timeline

2016-04-26 Thread Christina C.
I was frustrated that I could only get VO to read image descriptions if I
opened the tweet and flicked to the image. Anyways, I went to settings, look
and feel and changed in line images from disabled to thumbnail. Now it appears
so far that images with alt text are being read in my timeline. I am
experimenting so I can't report on any long term experience nor have I tried
any of the other options for in Line photos.

Good luck and I hope someone finds this helpful.

a few tweetings questions

2016-04-26 Thread Christina C.
Hi,

1. If I tap the timeline options button, I get a choice of Ninja Mode and
media timeline. what do those do?

2. If a tweet with a picture has image descriptions, is there a way to know or
hear them when flicking through my timeline? So far, I only catch an image
description if I open the tweet and flick to the image. I was just wondering if
there is a more efficient way, especially since so far most images do not have
a description.

3. In the tweetings app, is there a place to find my notifications? Sometimes
I hear a bird sound and I’m not quick enough to get to the banner at the top of
the screen. These notifications are not showing up on my notification center
via the three finger swipe down.

Thank you all ahead of time for any help in pointing me in the right direction
:)

Re: accessible twitter apps for Mac?

2016-04-25 Thread Christina C.
Do you prefer twitter for Mac or night Owl? Are they both in the Mac app store?
I’m not personally concerned with needing the alt text. Someone asked me
because they are trying to add alt text to their images more often but prefer
to use their laptop over their phone. This person is sighted and isn’t limitted
to an accessible Mac app. I just thought I’d inquire a bit here. :)

Re: can't get mac to work with micro Sd card

2016-04-21 Thread Christina C.
Thanks to all and to Sabahattin. The below instructions worked. So the problem
that I was having is that under the disk Utility I had the wrong disk selected
and that’s why the GB didn’t match my card. Thank goodness for the help here
and that I did not accidentally try to format the hard drive on my Mac. In the
table of discs there was one called something like apple SD card reader, can’t
remember exactly. I thought the disk directly under that one was the SD card
since it was some string of numbers and my hard drive was listed under that.
Anyways, I needed to have the apple SD card reader selected. I formatted the
disc per the instructions below and all seems fine. For now, the SD card also
seems to be working on my stream and is stating 60 GB of memory available. Lots
of other people are using 64 GB just fine with their stream but they used the
stream to format their card to make it work. So, for now I will try this 64 GB
card in my stream as an experiment with caution. The good news is that my SD
card is working on my mac as it should. :)

Thanks for all the help,
Christina

Re: can't get mac to work with micro Sd card

2016-04-18 Thread Christina C.
OK, I went and looked at Humanware’s documentation on the stream second
generation and the stream only supports up to 32 GB. That is so weird that I
remember it being 64. Did they downgrade that or something. The reason I
remember is because I have a 32 GB and I remember reading 64 and that I could
upgrade my card. I waited a very long time though. :) All I know is that
somehow I got it all wrong. :( Either way, Stream or not, shouldn’t my Mac work
with this card? Oh well, It’s a lost cause at this point I guess.

Thanks for all the kind help,Christina

Re: can't get mac to work with micro Sd card

2016-04-18 Thread Christina C.
> Sabahattin,

I think you are onto something. I did not even realize XC existed. So, It’s
highly possible that I purchased an incompatible card. I don’t even know if the
stream supports the SD XC cards. Since I didn’t realize there was a such thing
as XC I must have heard what I wanted when I placed the order. This is the
card that I purchased from Amazon. :( I wonder what I will use this card for
now. :( I added the link to the card that I purchased. I don’t know what you
mean about partitioning. Are you thinking I should just get a different card
for my mac and stream? I know for a fact that the stream second generation does
claim it supports 64 GB but I guess I just purchased the wrong kind of card.
Maybe I should get a 64 GB SD HC instead of XC?

Re: can't get mac to work with micro Sd card

2016-04-18 Thread Christina C.
Ok, I will try looking at it again now that I have a little bit of info from
you all. :) The SD C\card is not even showing up in Finder just as FYI. :)

The max the stream claims to handle is 64 GB. That is what size my card has and
the stream is having no problems with the card and telling me my capacity is 60
GB or something like that. :)

I am only having problems with it on my late 2011 Mac. I think it’s a
formatting issue but I haven’t figured out how to format this card. I will try
again in disk utility.

Right, I did know the memory would show a little bit less but what is showing
in the main part of the window is like 512 GB or something weird like that.
More like my hard drive which makes me scared to do anything because I’m afraid
to mess up my hard drive. I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to do.

Thanks,

Gary, Did your mac recognize that you put a card in and could not read it, or
did it not even respond? Just curious if my computer is having trouble reading
the card due to formatting compatability issues or if my computer just cannot
read micro SD cards.

Re: can't get mac to work with micro Sd card

2016-04-18 Thread Christina C.
Do you know if those card slots on a late 2011 Mac support micro SD cards? I’m
afraid to try putting that little micro card in there to try it. So I used the
adapter that came with the micro SD card. I will try connecting my stream via
USB to see if the card can be read that way.

can't get mac to work with micro Sd card

2016-04-18 Thread Christina C.
Hi all,

I have a Mac and it has an SD card slot. I put the micro SD card inside the
adapter that came with it to make the micro card standard size. I put the
memory card in the slot and I get a message that says something like the card
you inserted cannot be read by this computer. I am then given a choice to
ignore, eject or initialize. I tried the initialize option thinking it would
give me a way to format the card. I believe disk utility opened. I could not
figure out anything past that. In the table i made sure and select the card and
then went to the main part of the window and I just got information about my
hard drive and not the card. The GB of memory did not match the card. I did
google how to format the card but It was not fruitful. I need to use this card
with my stream. I tried formatting the card with the stream but that didn’t
help. The stream can read the card but my Mac cannot. I am running latest
version of El Capitan.

Thanks,
Christina

Re: something's seriously different on audible.com/library

2016-04-16 Thread Christina C.
Thanks so much for checking it out. I have not downloaded any apps in many
months to my Mac. I got sighted assistance from two different people and they
described everything to me that I was experiencing and I tried to explain it as
best as I can. The big thing is that they both confirmed that there was not a
table with a download button. I’m also wondering if when I click to try to
change between grid view and list view it does not really seem that anything
changes, maybe I am stuck in grid view and I should try an actual mouse click
on the links. Maybe somehow my view has changed and a VO spacebar does not
work. I really don’t know.

I know this sounds weird, but I am going to go on my iPhone and see if the
webpage in mobile is the same as I am experiencing on my Mac in Safari. Maybe
somehow my Mac is visiting the mobile site. I know a long long long time ago I
tried using the mobile site on my Mac but there was no library link and so I
never tried the mobile site again. It’s so weird because I have never had this
problem before. I have downloaded books onto my Mac many other times from
Audible. Well, I rebooted my computer and I will also visit my library again
and see what I get.

Re: Tray?

2016-04-16 Thread Christina C.
I will try VO + shift + J. I don’t mind sharing the site at all but it seems
that I am the only who has experienced this on audible.com. I don’t know why
but after I am logged in and click on library to download a book onto my Mac
the web page is totally different. There is not a table anymore with a download
link in the same row as the book I want to download. On the main page of my
library in audible, there is some kind of statement saying that Audible has
made enhancements to my library. There is a link to change my library from grid
view to list view, but neither of those have a link to download the book, only
a listen now link that does not seem to do anything.

So, in the very different view of my library, if I go down and find the book I
want and then click a link called quick look, then I get a popup and voice Over
announces “close tray”. I then have to navigate around until I hear download
options. Once I click on that Another popup opens but VO seems to lose focus.

I don’t think you will be able to try this as a few people have told me that
they are not experiencing this change to their library. All I can tell you is
that I have had sighted help from two different people and they have confirmed
that there is no download button there anymore and they helped me figure out
how to download my book Maybe things will go back to normal. I will try again
since I have rebooted my Mac and I will try the website again to see if things
have gone back to normal. :)

Tray?

2016-04-15 Thread Christina C.
I’ve experienced something I haven’t encountered before on Safari. I click on a
link and voice Over announces it’s on a close Tray window. A sighted assistant
told me it’s some kind of floating popup on the screen. I don’t know if it’s
specific to this website where they tagged the close button with “close tray”
or if this is a voice Over feature announcing that I am in a “Tray” and I’m
pretty confused. :) Sometimes Voice Over cannot seem to focus on this popup
floating thingy/window. Is there a way to get voice Over focus to this floating
thing/window?

Thanks,
Christina

something's seriously different on audible.com/library

2016-04-15 Thread Christina C.
I’m not an expert nor am I an idiot. Something is really different on the
library page of my audible account on Safari. I can no longer navigate to the
table with VO plus command plus T. There is something on the page saying that
Audible has made enhancements to my library. VO is constantly getting bounced
back to the top of the page. Also, I cannot find the download link in the same
row as the book I want to download. I had to get sighted help and this is the
best I can figure.

1. Find the book in your library, VO right until you hear “quick Look” and
select it. I hear voice Over say something about a close Tray. I believe that
the VO focus is on some kind of pop up on the screen. A problem occurs when VO
cannot focus on this “Tray” but it seems to do Ok, until the next step.

2. VO right arrow until you hear “download Options” and select it.

3. This is where VO looses focus for me. I cannot VO right or left arrow to
find the “Tray” or pop up or whatever it is. The best solution I can figure is
to VO I to open the item chooser. Then I type in download and arrow down a bit
to get to the correct download button. Then I select that, which takes me to
the correct download button on the page to download the book. I was informed
that it’s some kind of popup but VO seems to be calling it a Tray. Is their a
way to access this Tray through some kind of VO command when it pops onto the
screen but VO can’t seem to get to it? Using the item chooser seemed to work
OK, but felt like more of a work around. :)

Ok, I’d appreciate any help in understanding this change to Audible and how to
navigate around it better. :( I want my old audible library back.

I also hope I was not too confusing as this was a bit difficult to explain.

Re: Download audible book on mac?

2016-04-14 Thread Christina C.
A little bit more info. I noticed there is a link near the book title called
quick look and that seemed to bring up more info including a link to rate the
book and a link that said download options. I tried that and the screen
refreshed and I heard voice Over say something about a tray. However, I went
exploring I seemed to be back on the main library page and I did not find any
download options and all appeared as it did before I clicked the quick look
link. :( I double checked my download folder and there is no book downloading.
:(

Thanks,
Christina

Re: Download audible book on mac?

2016-04-14 Thread Christina C.
I can’t find the download button, nor can I find the place to rate the books.
This is so strange. It’s been about a month or two since I last downloaded a
book using Safari on my Mac while in my audible library. However, in the past
there was always a table with lots of info including a place to rate the books
and a download button. I just can’t find it anywhere. I double checked I am at
audible.com/library. I am logged in. I can find the list of books I have
purchased, including my most recent purchase but i just can’t find the download
button. I can only find a play now which seems to do nothing. :(

Thanks for any help, I’m starting to panic as I need something to keep me
occupied during insomnia. :)

Download audible book on mac?

2016-04-14 Thread Christina C.
Hello,

I’m confused. I purchased an audible book on my mac with Safari, went to my
audible library to download it like I usually do. I can’t find the download
link. I switched between grid view and list view and I still can’t find it.
All I can find is a "listen now" and I click on it and as best I can figure
nothing happens. I need to download the book to put it on my stream.

Thanks for any help,
Christina

Re: beginning of table in mail

2016-03-03 Thread Christina C.
Thanks! Option, command, up or down arrow works for me as well. It takes me to
the very top row of the column voice Over is in. So if I am in the subject
field, it will take me all the way to the top or bottom row of the subject
column, which is quite handy. VO,FN, plus left or right arrow also works and
takes me to the very first or last cell of the table. Option plus up or down
arrow does absolutely nothing on my late 2011 Mac running the latest version of
El Capitan. It certainly seems that way anyways. :)

Thanks all, I may never solve the mystery as to why option plus up or down
arrow does nothing for me and works for others, the great thing is that I can
now get to the very beginning of my messages table or the top row of the column
that I am in. It’s all good. :) That had been frustrating me for well over a
month now. I appreciate all of the help.

Re: beginning of table in mail

2016-03-02 Thread Christina C.
Weird, neither one of my option keys plus up or down arrow works weather I am
interacting with the messages table or not. I am on latest El Capitan. I do
get an announcement that says “field selected when I try the option up arrow
when I am not interacting with the table but when I do interact my cursor seems
to be in the exact same place and does not move to the beginning of the table.

The good news is that VO, FN, left or right arrow work like a charm. :)

notes app and evernote

2016-03-01 Thread Christina C.
Hello,

On my mac I used to find the notes app to be just fine for quickly jotting down
notes, especially from phone calls. Now when I use it I constantly hear voice
Over saying “body, body, body” and I find this extremely annoying. This is very
frustrating when I am navigating through notes to review or find information
from my notes. I know voice Over is just announcing the style of my text but is
there any way to make voice Over stop doing this? It’s making it very difficult
to review my notes.

As a side thought, is EverNote voice Over friendly on the mac or iOS? Maybe I
should switch to a different app for taking notes? It’s just so quick, or at
least it used to be quick to take notes on my Mac or iPhone, especially if I
use Siri to create a note for me. Does EverNote have a mac app or just a web
interface. I don’t know anything much about EverNote other than a lot of people
use it.

BTW, I am using El Capitan.

Thanks,
Christina

full keyboard for Mac

2016-02-18 Thread Christina C.
Hello,

Can anyone suggest a good keyboard for my Mac with a num pad? Wired or wireless
is fine, I prefer budget friendly but I am open to ideas as long as it is easy
to set up as a blind person and works well with all the voice Over key
combinations. It also does not have to be apple brand. I actually have trouble
pairing this apple blue tooth keyboard because I can’t tell if it’s in pairing
mode or even on. I also hate constantly changing the batteries on this one, for
some reason the batteries die quickly. I really miss having a num pad and would
love to get a keyboard with a num pad because it’s much easier for me to type
numbers quickly and accurately that way.

Thanks,
Christina

Re: Apple's headphone scam

2016-01-18 Thread Christina C.
Bottom line for me is that I trust apple. I have for years. They say if you are
an apple fan to never get too attached to anything because apple likes to
change things up. :) No company is perfect so I don’t expect perfection but I
do trust that if apple makes a change it will all be just fine. Sometimes
change is for the better and sometimes it’s a mistake but either way, I’m just
not worried. The current headphone jack has been around for a long long
time…so, who knows? I’m sure that some people freaked out when apple went with
a smooth touch screen on their phones instead of the tactile num pad. Wow, I
cannot imagine our society today without our smart phones and their touch
screens. I remember when some people thought there was no way that the
VI/blind community could ever use a touch screen. I’m just saying, relax. :)
I’m just not worried, not to mention the fact that this is all speculation and
rumors, we’ll cross that bridge if and when we get to it. If it happens, it
happens and we will probably deal with the minor inconvenience of getting used
to the change or maybe even love it. That’s just part of our modern world and
the way of technology growing and changing. It’s not just apple. :)

Re: Why do I want an Airport router?

2016-01-18 Thread Christina C.
Alex,

I don’t have the link handy but somewhere on apple’s website they have a chart
comparing the express, extreme, and time capsule. We are actually wanting to
update our almost 4 year old time capsule and so we are in the market for a
router and I find this conversation very interesting.

One thing to think about if you are considering purchasing an apple router is
if it is a good time to buy or if apple is about to update or refresh the
current model. This is the thing I have been trying to figure out because I
don’t want to purchase one and then in three months apple updates the model I
just purchased. I can’t seem to find any information as to what year the
current model is. I don’t know if the apple airport extreme came out this year
or two or three years ago. I do know that it’s newer than my time Capsule. That
is all I can figure out so far.

Also, I love having a guest network from the apple router. I don’t know what
other routers offer this. It gives me peace of mind when my kids neighborhood
friends want to use our wifi when they come over. I don’t mind sharing the
guest network at all. :) I don’t have to give out our password to our personal
wifi nor do I have to even worry one tiny bit about hacking from all these
kids. ha ha, not likely but I feel much better when it’s not even a factor and
I can be generous instead of cringing when people ask for our wifi password.
I’m sure that there are other routers that have a guest network I just don’t
know of them. My husband wanted to try google’s router but best we can figure,
their is no guest network and I don’t know if it would be accessible. Our next
router definitely needs to have a guest network. I have heard that there are
faster and better routers than apple’s but I guess it comes down to trust and
ease of use, especially with regards to accessibility.

We do use a airport express as a wireless wifi extender. I don’t know if an
express can be used with any brand of router but it does work well with our
time capsule.

Please share any info you learn through your research because I am open to
trying something new but only if I know that I won’t have to have sighted
assistance do everything for me. I surely would love something friendlier to
my wallet. :) I’m pretty sure that in the end we will stick with apple but I
prefer to make an informed choice.

Re: Apple's headphone scam

2016-01-18 Thread Christina C.
Hmm, I’m not convinced that making the thinnest iPhone ever is their priority.
The newest iPhone is a tad thicker than the previous year and I personally
think that a better battery should be the priority over a thinner phone. That’s
just me though. I believe their are other waterproof phones on the market. Do
these have regular headphone jacks. My philosophy is not to stress about it
because rumors and speculation are just that. I guess only time will tell what
apple’s “secret” plans are. :)

question about blind square

2016-01-18 Thread Christina C.
I finally purchased the blind square app this weekend since I got an iTunes
gift card as a gift. :) I don’t understand what the four square is. I know I
don’t have to sign up to use blind square. Do any of you find it helpful to
sign up for four square? Are the locations in four square user submitted or
something? I noticed quite a few places do not have addresses and there are
lots of odd named places that sound fake. One example was sitting here at the
red light at such and such cross street. Also, a hotel called bump and grind,
and a school called Dork High. Those are just a few, there were a lot of things
like that in my area.

Thanks,
Christina

mac compatible accessible digital recorder

2016-01-15 Thread Christina C.
Hello,

Can I get some suggestions for digital recorders that are blind friendly and
mac compatible with voice Over. I find that I need to record things since I
can’t write them down. I want to be able to quickly record a note. I find using
my iPhone inconvenient cuz I don’t tend to carry it around with me all day long
in my pocket. I also find it takes so very many taps to record a quick memo and
then voiceOver gets in the recording or I then have to do more tricks and
tapping to turn speech off after focus is on the record button. Plus I cannot
record notes to myself when on a phone call and I just need to record a phone
number or a couple of little things while on the phone.

I’d appreciate any information even if it’s an iOS app that you have found to
require minimal tapping and such. I do think a mac compatible and blind
compatible digital recorder may suit me best though.

Thanks,
Christina

Re: discovered a movie rental with audible narration

2016-01-03 Thread Christina C.
Do you know if anyone has started a list on the internet with a list of movies
offered by apple that has the audible narration? Is there a discussion on
applevis somewhere where people can post movies they have discovered that have
audible narration? I guess we would have to specify that it only works on apple
TV. It’s exciting that apple is working on this. Yay!

discovered a movie rental with audible narration

Hello all,

How do you find out if a movie rental or purchase will contain
descriptive/audible narration. we just rented The scorch trials from the apple
TV and were surprised that the rental contained audible narration. I would
definitely rent or purchase certain movies if I knew they had audible narration.

they can listen to their own music library with their own playlists and such.
We all have different tastes. :)

question about turning iCloud on for apple Music

2015-10-14 Thread Christina C.
Hello,

I was wondering if this was normal behavior. On my Mac I opted to turn on the
iCloud portion of apple Music so that any apple music songs I aded would be on
my computer and my iPhone. However, iTunes added my entire music library, even
songs ripped from CDs onto my iCloud apple music. Is this normal behavior. I
thought this only happened if I signed up for iTunes Match. I have checked and
I am not subscribed to iTunes Match.

I find this very frustrating because I tried creating a smart playlist in order
to see only the apple music songs that I do not own but have added to my
library. I can’t get this smart playlist to work properly because instead of
only adding the 20 or so songs that I have added from apple music, this
playlist has over a thousand songs because it is adding everything from my
music library that is in the cloud instead of just the apple music songs. :(

Thanks for any help or clarification.

help adding identity to onePassword

2015-10-12 Thread Christina C.
Hi,

In onePassword, I went to file, new, then identity. I found the table where I
add my name and such. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to
get into the fields and enter my information. I’m in the main Password app, not
the mini or the web extension.

I’d appreciate any help with this.

Re: help adding identity to onePassword

2015-10-12 Thread Christina C.
That worked. Tabbing didn’t work for me because I could not tell what field I
was in, as you stated. I did get stuck in the birthdate area. I had difficulty
figuring out how to fill that part out and just finally got lucky. I’d
appreciate any tips on that if you understand the date better than I did. I
also seemed to get stuck in there with VO. I finally kept hitting escape a lot
of times and then I finally got out of there. I’m just not exactly sure how I
got out of there.

Thanks,
Christina

Ok, I apologize for my confusion, are you guys saying that you use pages? Or
are you guys saying that you don’t like any of the solutions? I am hoping that

Nisus, Word, or pages?

2015-10-11 Thread Christina C.
Hello,

I would love some opinions about Word Processing on the Mac with Voice Over. I
seem to remember hearing great stuff about Nisus some time back. I looked it up
in the Mac app store and noticed it hasn’t been updated since 2013. I also have
seem some recent vague discussion on Office 365 for Mac. Of course, I have
heard of pages since it’s made by apple. I am looking for a long term solution
that is feature rich and easy to use with VoiceOver. I also need the documents
to be easily convertible for people who are on a PC. Great costumer support is
also hoped for. :) I also think it would be super to sync with my iDevices or
also maybe even transfer to voice Dream Writer and then maybe back again into
the word Processor of choice.

I’d appreciate any advice or shared experiences.

Thanks,
Christina

one password questions

2015-10-10 Thread Christina C.
Hello all,

The One password for Mac is on sale for $29.99. I’m not positive how good of a
deal this is or how long it will last but I’m thinking of purchasing it and I
have a couple of questions.

1. Is it VO accessible on the mac and iOS? If so, to what extent, fully
accessible, or are some aspects of One password in accessible to voice Over?

2. I tried Last Pass quite some time ago but I gave up on it because it seemed
to mess up my browsing experience in Safari on the Mac. My cursor would
constantly jump around and I would lose focus. All of this stopped once I quit
Last Pass. Anyways, does this same problem occur with One Password while in
Safari on the Mac?

Thanks,
Christina

Re: one password questions

2015-10-10 Thread Christina C.
Have you read the description in the Mac App Store? That may give you the
information you need. One Password is also cross platform if you need that. Of
course, I don’t know about the accessibility of one password on Android. I’m
also not sure if it’s on PC. I only know about apple stuff.

Re: cursor tracking in Finder is broken

2015-10-09 Thread Christina C.
This only happens in Finder or finder like environments. For example, If I am
in text edit and I bring up the save document dialogue box, if I want to choose
a location other than the default to save my document, the voiceOver cursor
gets stuck. It’s very frustrating and I end up asking for sighted assistance.
:(I do not have any activities created. I make sure quick Nav is turned off,
and yes I have tried turning cursor tracking off and then on again. Sometimes
turning voice Over on and then off again works, but sometimes it doesn’t work.
:( I am at a loss and very frustrated. I also deleted my fancy voices in case
that was causing a problem. I’ve heard of people resetting their voice Over
settings and how that fixes some problems. How do I do this and what kinds of
problems might this cause?

Re: cursor tracking in Finder is broken

2015-10-09 Thread Christina C.
Hmm, let me try to explain better. :)

I have quick Nav off and I am in list view in a finder window.

I went to the sidebar and selected documents. Then I Vo right arrow and hear
vertical splitter. Then i VO right again and hear scroll area. Then I interact
with the “scroll area.” Then I hear “list view table, six items” and when I try
to vo down, like I used to, I hear the actual word “name” then I VO down arrow
because this sounds like a column header and I get a bonk. Then if I VO right
arrow I hear the other column headers for each time I VO right until I get to
the end, where I get a bonk. This has happened since Yosemite.

Ok, now I feel extremely stupid. While I was slowly going through this process
to type out the issue in detail, I paid closer attention and noticed after I
interact with the scroll area the first thing I hear”list view table” and so I
interacted with it. I feel so dumb but I was then able to interact with the
table/list of files. I never used to have to interact so many times in the
past. I have been having this trouble for months and months and it was all
because I needed to interact an extra time. Plus, why does VO mention the table
first and then name off the column headers after the table? I think that must
be why I was so confused because in my head the column headers would be spoken
before the table itself.

So, now I have another question, is this how it is for everyone else, or is
something still weird with my computer? Why did they change it so that I now
have to interact so many times. I don’t remember it being a scroll area before
but just a list view or table. What is the benefit of this?

My apologies and thank you’s. If you all hadn’t asked me such good questions, I
never would have figured this out. It has been driving me mad for so long.
Thank you all. In conclusion, voice Over tracking is not broken. It just
appeared that way to me since I was too dense to figure out how to use this
finder window sooner. :)

Re: cursor tracking in Finder is broken

2015-10-09 Thread Christina C.
Thanks, I had been using just the arrow keys, without the VO modifiers, before
today. That is how I was able to work with finder all these months. However, I
couldn’t dig in like I needed to. I am finally able to clean up my desktop.
Every time I went to save a document I could not figure out how to easily
change folders and everything was saving to my desktop. Now, I know I just have
to interact more and hopefully, I can keep my desktop cleaner. :)

cursor tracking in Finder is broken

2015-10-08 Thread Christina C.
Hello,

I am still on latest version of Yosemite. I have had this problem for several
months and it’s driving me bonkers. I have cursor tracking on and I am using
list view in Finder. I cannot get the voiceOver cursor to enter the list of
files. It stays stuck in the column headers. I can kind of arrow around with
just the arrow keys (not the VO left and right arrows) in the file list but I
can’t get any other information. It’s like the voice Over curser will not
follow the keyboard curser. I have tried tabbing and everything else I can
think of. Does anyone know a fix for this?

Thanks,
Christina

Re: opening files in messages on Mac

2015-10-01 Thread Christina C.
Hi Alex,

When you are in the finder, bring up the contextual menu for the file that you
want to send, choose, share, messages. That is how you can message a file to
someone. :) I checked my downloads folder and I could not find it. However, I
figured out that you have to do an actual double mouse click. It’s a bit hit
and miss though. I think the mouse pointer needs to be in the correct spot.

opening files in messages on Mac

2015-09-30 Thread Christina C.
Hello,

I can’t figure out how to open a RTF filed that was messaged to me on my mac in
the messages/iMessages application. I tried Vo spacebar, routing the mouse to
the file name and performing an actual mouse click. I also tried bringing up
the contextual menu but just get some unrelated options, like clear chat
transcript.

I’d appreciate any help. Thanks so very much.

Re: Why on earth can I no longer read tables in Safari?

2015-09-24 Thread Christina C.
Christine,

Have you tried turning quick nav off and when you get close to the table just
using the arrow keys without any modifiers? If I can arrow down into the table
, sometimes, once I am there I can then use the VO plus arrow keys to navigate.
Using the arrow keys alone along with the correct toggle of vo plus equal sign
is helping but not perfect. :( Also, I am using DOM mode. I have not tried
using group mode for navigating website to see if that makes any difference.

Does drop box automatically organize them into some kind of folder system or

Re: Odd webpage behaviour.

2015-09-23 Thread Christina C.
Ok, try this. Navigate to the cell with the User’s guide link. Then interact
with it. If you VO left and right you will notice two places you can go. Voice
Over has nothing to say for the first place, but the second place Voice Over
will read out the name of the file. Go back to the silent/first option. if you
bring up the context menu you will get some options to download linked file or
open linked file in new window. I did not try any of these options. I hope this
will work for you. Also, I did a duck duck go search for your printer plus the
words user’s guide and in my search results some of the results appeared to be
direct links to the PDF. However, I wasn’t positive of your exact model nor did
I know what language you needed so I did not copy and paste the links here.

Good luck,

Re: Why on earth can I no longer read tables in Safari?

2015-09-22 Thread Christina C.
Oh my gosh! I was having the exact same problem. I could not figure out what
was going on. I tried VO plus the equal sign and all I got was a bonk sound
but suddenly I could access a table that I could not before.

Can you please explain what this vo plus equal sign command is for. I don’t
understand it. I tried the keystroke a few more times and Vo just says table
interaction required or table interaction not required. I don’t understand
this. In the past, before a few minutes ago and trying the vo plus equal sign,
no matter how many times I tried to get voice Over to interact with a table it
absolutely would not. VoiceOver would just act as if the table did not exist
and I kept having to get sighted assistance. The only reason I knew there was a
problem was because I had been to the sight in the past and new something was
wrong. All seems to be working now but I would love to understand this command
better if possible. Thanks so much!

using drop box for photos was Re: Is iPhoto obsolete now?

2015-09-22 Thread Christina C.
Jessica,

Can you please elaborate or point me to a source as to why and how you find
dropBox easier for your photos. I really can’t do a darn thing with the photos
themselves but I do like how apple’s photos app automatically organizes them. I
suppose maybe some of my family members would want to edit photos one day but
really I just need somewhere to keep them organized for me.

Thanks,
Christina

Is iPhoto obsolete now?

2015-09-19 Thread Christina C.
Ok, I am behind I guess. I rarely used iPhoto on the Mac since I can’t see the
photos. Anyways, occasionally I do have family photos or videos to organize.
My family members take the pics. Anyways, I opened iPhoto and I got a message
that my photos were migrated to Photos. So, is iPhoto obsolete? Is the photos
app the replacement and is it just as useful. I’m just confused. Is it
basically voiceOver accessible, besides the obvious fact that I cannot see the
photos themselves? :) I mainly use it to store the pictures for my family and
don’t mess with or edit the actual photos.

Thanks,
Christina

who can upgrade to El Capitan

2015-09-19 Thread Christina C.
Hello all,

Where do I get the info about which Macs can upgrade to El Capitan? Also, how
do I find out what model of computer I have. Will the Mac App store
automatically let me know if I can upgrade or not by prompting me to upgrade or
does the App store automatically prompt me to upgrade my computer even if it’s
too old?

Thanks,

Re: annoying quicknav problem in osx 10.10 and 10.11

2015-09-17 Thread Christina C.
I also cannot type in text fields when quick nav is on. I believe in the
voiceOver Utility under commanders/quick nav, there is a check box that says
"Enable single-key webpage navigation when using Quick Nav.” You can try
unchecking this if you do not like to use single key navigation. This feature
is probably what does not allow you to type in text fields on webpages. I use
single key navigation a ton so I leave this option on.

Good Luck,
Christina

Re: What to include and exclude on this list?

2015-09-15 Thread Christina C.
I am in the minority here but I would prefer that posts to this list would be
mac related only. There is a list for iDevices. I like to come to the
MacVisionaries list when I have questions or want to learn about the Mac. I do
believe that if the discussion includes the phone but is still related to the
mac than it is OK in my book. For example, if someone has a question on how to
eject their iPhone from iTunes, or how to perform an encrypted backup of their
iPad in iTunes, or even, how do I get my pictures off of my iPhone and onto my
Mac. I realize this could be a gray area but I would personally still prefer
that the macVisionaries list would keep the topics tethered to the Mac and it’s
operating system. It’s really not that different than discussing windows and
VMWare fusion as it relates to the Mac. However, it would be inappropriate for
a discussion to occur how to use Open Book in windows.

Now, where would the appleTV fit in? I don’t know, would that be for the iPhone
discussion list since it is more closely related to the iOS operating system?
The apple TV is definitely not a Mac though.

Re: right mouse click

2015-09-14 Thread Christina C.
This is not an actual click of the mouse pointer. yes, it does bring up the
contextual menu in some instances. I need the mouse pointer to actually click,
but I need the “right click” Sometimes the vo command to bring up the
contextual menu does not work. I do try the trick of routing the mouse pointer
to the voiceOver cursor and then holding down the control key and than very
carefully trying to click the track pad but sometimes I am not so accurate and
move the mouse pointer by accident :(

Thanks, but it didn’t work. The crazy thing is that not even trying to
activate the app with quick nav will work. I have all the cursor tracking set
correctly. Something just may be wrong because I’ve also noticed that when I am
in a dialog box the cursor keeps wrapping from the bottom back to the top and I
have cursor wrapping set to off.

Re: Apple Music

2015-07-21 Thread Christina C.
I am no expert but I’m not a tech idiot either and I personally find apple
music on the Mac very difficult to use. On the iPhone it is a bit easier but
there are less options there. Anyways, the only way I’ve consistently been able
to play all songs by one artist is to use Siri on my iPhone and to ask Siri to
play all songs by so and so. Also, when I’ve done this, then expanded the mini
player and used the up next button, at the top I’ve noticed an add button close
to the top but I have not tried it yet to say what it does or what you can add.
I wonder if it’s to add more artists but I haven’t had time to play with it.
Everything in appleMusic takes me soo long to set up and to make changes. It’s
very cumbersome and clunky for me personally.

Alex, I guess the only work around would be to have appleMusic on the iPhone
play all songs from an artist than add that playlist to your library and then
on the mac play that playlist? I’m so happy to know that you did a podcast for
appleMusic with iTunes on the Mac. I will definitely be listening to that one.
I use my stream for podcasts and am subscribed to the appleVis podcast but my

Re: Things

2015-06-15 Thread Christina C.
One of my favorite things about the Reminder’s app is that I can simply use
Siri. For example, if I put clothes in the dryer and don’t want to forget to
take them out while they are still warm. I just say, Siri, remind me in 45
minutes to fold clothes. I use it all the time even for things that are way
ahead. I might tell Siri to remind me on such and such date to purchase a
particular book that is released on that date. It’s just so easy. I do also use
the Any List app as it also suits some of my other needs, mostly for grocery
shopping or when I want to make a list with my own custom categories. For
example, I want to make a gift idea list. I simply create categories that are
the names of friends and family. Also, I can make custom categories with
grocery store aisles in the order that I shop. That’s just so helpful. :) You
can also share your lists with other family members and they have an online
website. I don’t have much experience with the website though. I am unaware of
any way to set due dates or location based reminders in the Any List app. It’s
more of a list app than a reminder/to do app. Also Any List can be synced with
the native iOS Reminder’s app for a round about way to use Siri with Any List.
I have not tried it though. I don’t have time these days to fiddle with it. So
for now, Using the two suit my needs wonderfully.

Also, another great feature of the native reminders app is that if you use
Family Share, you get a list that the whole family can use.

ahead. I might tell Siri to remind me on such and such date to purchase a
particular book that is released on that date. It’s just so easy. I do also
use the Any List app as it also suits some of my other needs, mostly for
grocery shopping or when I want to make a list with my own custom categories.
For example, I want to make a gift idea list. I simply create categories that
are the names of friends and family. Also, I can make custom categories with
grocery store aisles in the order that I shop. That’s just so helpful. :)
You can also share your lists with other family members and they have an
online website. I don’t have much experience with the website though. I am
unaware of any way to set due dates or location based reminders in the Any
List app. It’s more of a list app than a reminder/to do app. Also Any List
can be synced with the native iOS Reminder’s app for a round about way to use
Siri with Any List. I have not tried it though. I don’t have time these days
to fiddle with it. So for now, Using the two suit my needs wonderfully.

Also, another great feature of the native reminders app is that if you use
Family Share, you get a list that the whole family can use.

selecting noncontiguous items in finder

2015-06-11 Thread Christina C.
Hello all,

I apologize but for the life of me I can’t remember how to do that. I remember
how to turn cursor tracking on and off, but that is as far as I can get. I
haven’t done this in over a year or more. Anyways, I can’t figure it out. I did
a search for the term noncontiguous in the voiceOver help but no results came
back. I’d appreciate any help. I have lots of files to select and move in a
long list and I’d rather do it all in one move after I make my selections.

Thanks,

have you listened to a podcast on Dream Writer or read about the features that

Voice Dream Reader is not used only by the blind community and not everyone in
the blind community uses applevis or viPhone. When I love an app I don’t mind
at all when a developer mentions a new app in the update notes, especially if
it is an app I love and find very useful. I actually quite appreciate learning
that their newest app is now available in the app store. Even my sighted family
members are happy when they learn their favorite app developer has a new app
out. I do not regularly visit a developer’s website or app pages in the app
store to see if they have made anything new. I prefer a small blurb in the
update notes instead of being bombarded in my inbox or with constant ads within
the app. I also do not feel like the developer was taking a cheap shot and
putting out a fake update just to advertise voice Dream Writer. he had
negotiated with the TTS companies so that one would not have to double purchase
voices for both voice Dream Reader and Voice Dream Writer. He wanted customers
to be able to carry those in app purchases over to Voice Dream Writer. In my
opinion, I thought that was very considerate of him. The update to voice Dream
Reader was necessary to make that happen, it wasn’t just a cheap way to
advertise his new app.

Re: Fantastical

Hmmm, I’ve never tried to open it from menu extras. Did you try the application
chooser? I’m not talking about the applications folder. That is how I used to
get to it or I would use a shortcut keystrokes that I set up within
fantastical’s settings and that would usually bring fantastical into focus. It

I got sighted assistance a sighted user could see it open but the only way I
could bring it into focus was by using the application chooser or the hotkeys

thing is that if you lose focus on the app, you can find it via the application
chooser by using vo keys plus F1 or vo plus FN plus f1 twice.

Christina

don’t count on me to remember to pass along a sale. :) Plus, I don't
consistently read all my emails. Here is the link to sign up for their offers.
Use the item chooser to find the “Join the Mariner Family” heading to navigate
to the sign up area of the webpage faster.
