Nearly all decent motherboards have RAID controller capabilities these days.
Doesn’t mean you have to use them Mine has two on board RAID controllers, both
are disabled.

OK - the FreeNAS site says ti avoid RAID controllers at all cost - they
want to do it themselves. They go on about the "right" HBAs, NICs, etc. I
think probably the one thing to pay attention to is Intel CPUs.

Funny that you mention Freecycle, as that’s where I got the processor and
memory. I bought the motherboard and case.

Something I learned a long time ago - don’t buy cheap cases. I got tired of my
hands ending up like hamburger meat after working with $40 cases. For maybe
twice that you can get a case that’s far better and they even deburr all of the
edges.

I picked up five boxes that could run Win7 or Vista. Some have built in RAID

Just a generic PC I built out of parts. Basic i7 processor I had laying around,
although you could certainly use something less powerful. Motherboard with a
RAID controller, 12GB of RAM, four 2GB hard drives, two 1GB hard drives and a
128GB SSD for a boot drive (again, major overkill but I had it on the bench.)
The hard drives came out of my “failed” Drobo and have been working just fine.
I think I’ve had one failure of a Toshiba drive and it was still under warranty.

With a ZFS encrypted RAID 5 array I think I have around 6GB of space or
thereabouts.

Hot swappable drives, serious security and redundancy, based on a FreeBSD
kernel, this thing has been rock solid since I built it.

I’ve had media stuff on it, specifically Plex, but no one in the house really
seemed interested in using it, so I blew it away and recovered the space for my
Time Machine volume.

Re: [MBZ] OT - desktop hard disks

2018-10-09 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
My WD Mycloud Mirror 8 TB NAS has been running for nearly 4 years without any
problems. Bonus...it runs the DVR software for the network so I don't need to
keep a PC running for that. When I bought it from the Wimmen Warriors I paid
less than the cost of the 2 drives, so I'm content with the result so far. No
doubt YMMV.

What hardware are you running it on?
I mistakenly thought that new hardware meant to be NAS would run a long
time. In reading reviews, it w=seems that too many are finding that the
lower end Synology, QNAP, and WD NAS boxes are lasting just about three
months!

2018-10-08 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
No qnap experience but my Synology boxes are all still ok. I had one disk
failure on a ds211j that coincided with a power cut before I put everything
on ups. I would look for a possible external cause for your qnap problems.
Two fails is too many. I'm using Apc smartups on my systems (from
excessups). Cheap ups don't work well with my standby generator which puts
out over 63 hz at low load.

The second QNAP TS-328 has died now. They last three months, then just turn
off and won't turn on again. Always plugged into a UPS, power supply brick
still puts out power, but the box with the drives is just dead. The first
one lasted three months, died, got replaced by another new one. The good
news was that I just plugged the drives in, and all was good. The bad news
is that it just died - three months after getting it. I'm NOT impressed
with QNAP at this point. Don't know what I'll do next, but I'm looking into
Synology - just don't want to spend a lot of money ( <$300 ).

QNAP is good stuff, you should be fine with it.

For anyone considering a NAS, avoid Drobo. They have proprietary firmware that
“tags” each hard drive and checks it for errors. If the error count is too
high as determined by their standards, the drive is flagged as bad and cannot
be used in the array. While in theory this sounds like a really good idea, in
practice it sucks. I say that because their criteria for error count is pretty
darned low, and as a result you end up with a pile of drives that are perfectly
fine with any other appliance or PC but not with the Drobo. I dumped mine less
than six months after I bought it, as it had rejected three of the four (new)
drives I had bought at the same time I bought it (I bought the drives
separately from the Drobo as they wanted stupid money for the same drives.)

This is not something covered under warranty, and the drive manufacturers won’t
replace the drives, either, as they still meet their standards.

I run a FreeNAS server for my storage and backup needs. Cheap, simple and very
reliable.

The three 4TB disks were less than two 8TB disks, and I really like RAID 5
so - that's what I did.
When I copied my photos directory to the NAS, it counted 465,000 files at
564GB. All total, I've put 1.27TB on the NAS from the two PCs.
Here's hoping that the old PC keeps on ticking - but at least the data will
be safe (knocking on wood).

2018-04-13 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Jim,
Your note about wear leveling and full drives helped me to realize a point.
I've noted that SSDs suffer worse than spinning disks for slowing down when
they get really full. Somebody had told me that it was due to wear leveling,
now I better understand, thanks for that.
We sell an SSD array for video storage that pulls an astounding 3,000MB/s out
of 10 drives to deliver to up to 10 simultaneous client connections. Those
numbers may not seem that impressive but the same system with spinning disk
drives is only 600MB/s.
Side note, we currently support up to 6.4PB total storage. The numbers have
gotten goofy. When I started teaching back in 2006 we supported up to 192TB...

I know the SSD can fail suddenly but I've had HDs do that too. I'm kind of
anal about backup with files backed up locally and in the cloud as well as (at
least) weekly drive images. My backups are all automated so it's fairly
painless.

Completely false on both counts, depending on circumstances and subtracting
the pun.

SSD's are _usually_ faster, and don't have mechanical wear mechanisms. But
there are also two basic facts of physics working against you:

1) The fundamental electron tunneling mechanisms used have a
wear-equivalent behavior, and they literally slow down with every erasure.
Depending on the technology, at a 10:1 ratio or worse. When near EOL, some
devices can take 1/2 second or more PER ERASURE to finish.

2) Some flash technologies have a wear-out threshold in the hundreds
(10^2!) of cycles. The best ones are only millions (10^6). 10^4-10^5 are
the middle of the road. Most flash vendors don't want to tell you the raw
numbers. The newest high-density MLC/TLC flashes are the worst.

Plus, there are more factors:

3) Wear-leveling mechanisms, required in order to compensate for the above
two conditions, are often not matched to the filesystem. This can result
in highly-unoptimal use behavior of the raw flash device, causing
accelerated wear on the flash. Yes, making things worse instead of
better. Current trends are to integrate this necessary mechanism into the
device, where it is opaque, unspecified, and unadvertised. By the time you
find out it's actually shit, it's too late. Low-cost commodity devices are
usually the worst.

4) The more full the SSD is, the less free space there is to push around
for wear leveling purposes. A nearly full device will wear out much faster
than a nearly empty one.

5) Retention is usually unspecified, but can be measured in months on the
worst devices. Higher temperatures exacerbate the problem.

For some heavy write-oriented applications, a traditional rotating disk
will actually work better and last longer! A company I once worked for
changed production from rotating to SSD, "to enhance reliability." Failure
rates in the field went _up_! They did not switch to a flash-friendly
filesystem format, and the traditional fs just wore the flash out in short
order. The 'improvement' was made by the purchasing/marketing department,
and engineering was neither involved nor consulted. Oops.

OTOH, a truly optimal implementation, largely read-only and well-matched to
the application, will really fly, last a long time, and will be immune to
physical abuse.

Our big Macs here at home use SSD for the boot/application disk, and
rotating media for all the user files. They're blazingly fast in general
operation, but a catastrophic SSD failure will not result in the loss of
critical data. These machines all use Time Machine to back up to a server,
which uses 2TB RAID HD's to catch. One of these raw HD's is rotated out to
off-site storage quarterly, and the RAID is rebuilt with the oldest offline
device. (4 2T mechanical hard drives in rotation, 2 serving 'live' at a
time, 2 in separate off-line off-site locations.)

Fast, and safe.

2018-04-11 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I have gone to modest (like 500G) SSDs in all my PCs and store most files
externally on a NAS. PCs boot much faster from a SSD. My main NAS (always on)
is a Synology DS216play with two 8T WD red drives that I bought refurbished on
ebay for much less than new. The 216 is set up as two large (8T) volumes with
no RAID, They have been running fine for about two years now. I also use a
Synology DS413 set up as 13T RAID 5 with three 6T and one 3T WD red drives (all
ebay refurb) which is the backup for most things, including all the DS216.
Finally, I have an external USB drive plugged into the 216 for weekly disk
image backups of all PCs. Storing full image backups on a USB drive simplifies
a restore. To date, I haven't had problems with the WD red drives. I use
Acronis for backup on the Win machines and the Synology (free) package for
backup between the Synology machines. No complaints so far.

When you do that, the larger disk thinks it is the size of the smaller
disk, which is why you have to use a partition manager (on Linux, parted)
to enlarge the last partition on the disk.

2018-04-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Only 4 core per processor and short on RAM but not bad for the money. I'd
double the RAM in it, Crucial has it for $100, you can probably get it cheaper
elsewhere just make sure its fast enough...

2018-04-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
It would be stretch to say SSDs always have a longer life than spinning disk
drive. They do have a known lifespan, last I knew it was 10^28 writes to any
given data location at which point you've got a read-only drive.
For most people that means the drive will last a really long time, however if
you were doing lots of write/delete cycles you could kill a disk pretty
easily...
I've got a Touchbar Macbook Pro because the SSD in my Retina Macbook Pro quit
after 4 years. I've never had a laptop drive failure before...

As an aside I was just thinking about how many drives I'm responsible for
currently, I quit counting at 300...

My boot disk and the second disk - used for backing up photos, etc. are almost
full. This is an older (9 years old) HP consumer box.

I'm seeing 4TB disks for reasonable prices, Seagate and Western Digital.
What have the rest of you experienced in terms of drive reliability/life?

I only have two drive bays in the case - seems inadequate today . . .

I'd hate to have to rebuild the box from scratch, with the licensing hassles
from M$ and Adobe, etc., but am also thinking of one of those HP workstations
Curt was recommending a few years ago.

I wonder if there are adapters to old SATA controllers?

I haven't had to do this kind of stuff in many years, but last I remember,
copying a disk does not get the MBR, just the files and directories. A
clone would get the MBR, but how that works with a disk of a different size
I don't know. You used to have to purchase software to do this stuff
decently, is there freeware that works now? I'm running W10 . . .
I'm guessing boot to a Linux USB drive with the utilities, then clone the
old drives to the new ones?

Re: [MBZ] OT - desktop hard disks

2018-04-11 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I have read that SSDs have a much longer lifespan, and are a lot faster to boot
(pun attempt).

Also, I too favor WD over the competition.

My solution was a NAS with a pair of red 4TB WD HDs. The cost for the WD
MyCloud Mirror was no more than the cost of the 2 HDs in it. It also runs my
HDHomerun DVR software in its spare time.

If you’re buying a single drive, splurge and buy an enterprise grade drive.
Well worth the extra bucks.

2018-04-11 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I have recently bought a couple from Newegg I think, I want to say HGTV
brand (!) but that's not right, but it is something like that.  They got
pretty good reviews for whatever that is worth. They were a bit more
expensive than the Seagate and WDs which got poor reviews.  I'm not sure
any of them are very good these days, some seem to be built better.

I would suggest getting 2 and putting them in external holders (cheap)
and mirroring your HD to both of them so you have some reliability and
redundancy.

Can you not copy your disks to a larger disk and then use a partition
editor to increase the size to that of the larger disk?
