and the usual suspects. Some walkers mentioned seeing a small hawk just
before I arrived, which I assume was that Sharp-shinned Hawk.

are poor. I found 11 species yesterday in
Golden Valley, with Wilson's Warbler being the most common and abundant.
I've encountered almost no migrating vireos, tanagers, etc. I have had no
trouble finding Empidonax flycatcher species, however.

A friend and I looked on Lake Calhoun from 11am-noon today and we did NOT
see the Long-tailed Duck. We drove around the whole lake. We did see the
two Common Loons and a Horned Grebe.

I was finally able to see the Long-tailed Duck on the SW corner of Lake
Calhoun (in Minneapolis) today from 12-12:30pm. It was actively diving
south and east of the floating dock structure. I was able to get some great
views.

I also drove over to the Theodore Wirth volleyball court area to check out
the shorebird mudflats, only to find 2 Spotted Sandpipers and one Killdeer.

FLYCATCHER was heard giving the wit call near the dock. 2 SWAINSON'S
THRUSH were seen from the parking lot as well.
The group also got great looks at MARSH WREN, SORA (~3-4 birds), and
VIRGINIA RAIL (1-2 birds).

. The gulls were on the southeast side of the lake. And to correct my
observations from yesterday, the gulls were originally at the northwest end
before being scared by the Bald Eagle, then they flew to the east shore. I
had gotten my directions mixed up.

*Boreal Chickadee: 1-2 birds present at the Admiral Road feeders around
9:30am
More expected birds included Pine Grosbeak, Gray Jay, Common Redpoll,

in hopes of spotting a Black-crowned Night Heron. I didn't find one, but

I tried for the Whimbrel reported earlier today in Morristown, Rice County.
I watched the wetland and surrounding corn stubble for ten minutes around

another report of a Cerulean Warbler that was heard singing at
Westwood Hills Nature Center (St. Louis Park) yesterday. It was on/along

) at North Ottawa Impoundment (Grant
Co.). We did not hear or see either of the King Rails or any herons/egrets
of interest. The highlights were 4 Red-necked Phalaropes and 9 other
shorebird species, a Canvasback, an American Bittern, and a Virginia Rail
and Soras.

. I'm debating trying for the bird on Thursday. The King Rails were
last viewed on July 15 or 16, but I don't have any information since then
and I'd like to try for them on Friday.

I say fledglings because someone reported a fledgling, along with the two
adults, on eBird earlier today. This is very exciting that there is a
breeding pair in the Metro area and I hope our presence as birders doesn't
negatively impact their chick rearing.

I and others looked for the Washington County Black-legged Kittiwake (Hazen
Moores Park in Cottage Grove) from 3-4pm with no luck. Folks had seen it just
prior to my arrival at 3pm. Maybe folks will get lucky tomorrow morning.

Grebe on Medicine Lake in Plymouth,
Hennepin County. They were spotted off of the main beach in French Park (I
believe). This is a good large lake to check for waterfowl at this time of year.

The Tufted Duck was seen earlier this morning around 8am, at the private
residence in Red Wing that Bob Dunlap described yesterday. I’m not sure if it’s
still being seen or what, so please post your updates on here. Thanks!

I saw this on eBird: Wayne Perala photographed a female Barrow’s Goldeneye at
Orwell WMA (near the recreational area) earlier today. It sounds like it’s
difficult to pull off on the highway’s shoulder, so be careful if you try for
it!

with wide base, and long-ish tail that it flicked.
Lake Vadnais has hosted solitaires in the past. I would say that any
conifer is a good spot to check, although in previous years folks have seen
it in the red cedars (junipers).
