Re: [NTG-context] Structure of titles in MkIV
Hello All, First, let me say that the semantics of Book-making can be confusing as certain terms are used differently by different professionals. What has made it worse these terms have been convoluted by the computational adaptation of Book-making. A book generally has three divisions frontmatter, backmatter, and main text/body. These are made up of parts. What belongs in these divisions are dependent on your field, tradition, and publishers style! Basically, Alan is on the mark. Second, Michal TeX and ConTeXt has a section leveling. That is part is the highest level. and chapters are always part of a part. So, you want the effect you need, you should either enclose the Prologue and Epilogue in the frontmatter and backmatter parts respectively, (See MWE below) or wrap them in a part environment. BUT, Michal I believe has a point. Or should I say has come across a FLAW, according to my view of things. ConTeXt should warn that once you use a chapter the part command should not be mixed. That is if one uses parts that Chapters must be embedded a Part! I adjusted Michals MWE and we get basically, what he expects, that is Prologue and Epilogue on the same level. But, without it surrounding part the Epilogue is set at an level that is under Part A-level the Epilogue. This would mean that the \stoppart for Part A or my inserted Part B is not being recognize and the sectioning Counter being adjusted properly! Or an error should be flagged! Yes, there are easy work arounds! This FLAW is intrinsic to the intelligence of ConTeXt. Most of us would be using front- and backmatter, sectioning commands, numbering schemes and thereby avoiding it. But, ConTeXt should warn of the false behaviour. Below I have a MWE to show the FLAW. MWE: \starttext \placecontent %\startfrontmatter % uncomment line to show what you would expect \startchapter[title=Prologue] \input knuth \stopchapter %\stopfrontmatter % uncomment line to show what you would expect \startpart[title={Part A}] \startchapter[title=One] \input knuth \stopchapter \stoppart % FLAW: sectioned under Part A should expect sectioning level 1 % or throw error that part needed here! \startchapter[title={not at top level}] \input knuth \stopchapter \startpart[title={Part B}] \startchapter[title=One] \input knuth \stopchapter \stoppart % \startbackmatter % uncomment line to show what you would expect % FLAW: sectioned under Part B should expect sectioning level 1 % or throw error that part needed here! \startchapter[title=Epilogue] \input knuth \stopchapter %\stopbackmatter % uncomment line to show what you would expect \stoptext regards Keith. ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

That was my initial impression too. There are simply too many combination possible. In such a case it makes more sense to tune the rendering than to figure out all the options. On the other hand, I too need citations and bibliographic references to appear in different forms, three in my case: In the Bibliography with Author: Last name, first name, In the text and footnotes the first time with Author(s): First name(s), last name(s), and full title of the work, and in all the following citations with Author(s): Last name(s) only and short title of the work. I could think of no other way to accomplish this than to generate the .bbl, make two copies, “Inversed Author” and “Short Title”, make the necessary changes in these .bbl’s, including the cite-key to mark it for these two alternatives. I should add that I could not use apa but an apa-like, modified in many details which also forced me to tweak the .bbl. [NTG-context] Resizing multi-line fill-in field

[NTG-context] PDF Forms - expanding multi-line text fields
I am composing a document that contains pdf forms. Example code in Widgets Uncovered, shows how to specify the height and width of a multi-line text field. Here is a small example: \usemodule[fields] \setupinteraction[state=start] \setupfield [TextSetup] [width=\textwidth,height=5em,background=screen,backgroundscreen=.97,frame=off] \definefield [Block] [text] [TextSetup] \starttext \field [Block] \stoptext In this example the height is 5em. The field will scroll lines up when the height of the lines typed exceeds the height of the field. Click outside the field and the field displays the first n-lines that fit within its height. My question is, is it possible to tell the field to expand beyond its initial field height to display all its lines? A second less pressing question is, is it possible to tell lines to wrap when they exceed the field width? -- With kind regards, Michael Guravage ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

Hello ConTeXist. 0. Do you think that this is only a problem for beginners of ConText or it is a general problem of ConTeXt? 1. How many of ConTeXt users use this tool for typesetting of non-elementary mathematics? 2. Are you satisfied with the results, which produces ConTeXt (thinking in the field of mathematics rate)? In general, yes. But there are some issues with TiKZ [http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2013/076384.html] and in some ocasions with columns (not balanced). Perhaps we could have a bug triage system for that? 3. What things do you need to have in ConTeXt study that one could bet mathematics at a reasonable level? One reason for ConTeXt is the ability of deal with XML and produce several outputs. Separation of content and presentation is also good. 4. Is ConTeXt able to substitute LaTeX to typesetting of math (e.g. in the future)? I join one person (I don't remember who) who says there could be more examples for learning people. I think an ideal think could be to have an equivalent The not so short introduction to LaTeX. 5. Can you think of any more questions that should be here? The community is good. Re: [NTG-context] OT: Reflections on usability ConTeXt for typesetting of mathematics
Hi, I do use ConTeXt for typesetting mathematics, and actually I began to use ConTeXt several years ago for my work as a mathematician: up to now I haven’t encountered a single instance in which ConTeXt would not give the expected result, and as a matter of fact the out-of-the-box capabilities and the quality of the typestting when using ConTeXt seems to me quite superior to plain TeX or LaTeX. I use ConTeXt for writing exercise sheets, lecture notes, and drafts of papers and all the presentations for my talks. It is true that when submitting my papers to journals, unfortunately I have to switch back to LaTeX, but even so I prefer using ConTeXt in all the preparation steps because it is more convenient to use, and also I can use these notes directly for my lecture notes and presentations. Now coming to answer your questions: I have a few questions: 0. Do you think that this is only a problem for beginners of ConText or it is a general problem of ConTeXt? All depends on how complex one's document is, and how deep one’s knowledge of TeX and ConTeXt is. 1. How many of ConTeXt users use this tool for typesetting of non-elementary mathematics? I cannot say anything about the overall number of users, but as I said above I use it for the kind of maths I am doing: some of it is really not elementary… 2. Are you satisfied with the results, which produces ConTeXt (thinking in the field of mathematics rate)? I am absolutely satisfied with the results. 3. What things do you need to have in ConTeXt study that one could bet mathematics at a reasonable level? My knowledge of TeX and ConTeXt is rather elementary, but this does not prevent me to use ConTeXt. Moreover in the rare situations in which I don’t know how to achieve a certain result, there a good group of gurus on the mailing list to help solve my problem. 4. Is ConTeXt able to substitute LaTeX to typesetting of math (e.g. in the future)? For sure it is: the reason for which ConTeXt is seldom used among mathematicians (or other scientists) is the fact that journals have developped specific macros for their layout and despite the fact that the quality and shortcomings of LaTeX are well-known, publishers of these journals are more than reluctant to switch to a more modern macro package of TeX, such as ConTeXt. 5. Can you think of any more questions that should be here? Maybe one can imagine a script which would downgrade a file written in ConTeXt to a LaTeX file, once one accepts to lose the quality of the typesetting… Best regards: OK On 9 févr. 2014, at 20:09, Jaroslav Hajtmar hajt...@gyza.cz wrote: Hello ConTeXist. Even if I would not not make any other statement than yours, so I'm clear at this time that the problem is probably sitting in front of a keyboard and monitor :-). Perhaps the problem is that the Internet is relatively little of mathematical demonstrations in ConTeXt, and if one is accustomed to some practices in LaTeX or use different packages, it can be a little taken aback ConTeXt. Now I also found that even though I dont switch fonts, so I worked in an environment that me from switching fonts and therefore some formulas look very bad. But it is my wrong. I've got to give more attention. Enthusiasm for my current project takes patience and sound reasoning. I've to give a time to prevents my mistakes. When I am not careful, then I am doing many of dificult searchable errors. Thanks for ConTeXt and thanks to all in this list for your advice and help. Jaroslav Hajtmar Dne 9.2.2014 23:31, Otared Kavian napsal(a): Hi, I do use ConTeXt for typesetting mathematics, and actually I began to use ConTeXt several years ago for my work as a mathematician: up to now I haven’t encountered a single instance in which ConTeXt would not give the expected result, and as a matter of fact the out-of-the-box capabilities and the quality of the typestting when using ConTeXt seems to me quite superior to plain TeX or LaTeX. Now I need to type some mathematics (at secondary school level) and I found that I came across borders of my knowledge of ConTeXt, or on possibilities of ConTeXt for typesetting of mathematics. I do not in any way call into question the ability of ConTeXt typesetting mathematics, although I think that who wants to type mathematics then use LaTeX. Question 3: url is mentioned. Does that mean that url can actually used as a data field name? Hi, I have struggled with Bibliographies and almost gave up, because of the non-standard, and changing, style requirements (like apa but different in details, with, moreover, three different styles for citations in footnotes: full data, a shorter version and a still shorter version, the latter probably (authoryear), but I'm still not sure). In the end I used for everything the category booklet, which is less of a straitjacket than the other categories. It gives you the freedom to put some extra details (if needed) in the title and also to style the author the way you want (for example Last name, First name or Last name, initials, or Initials Last name or whatever you want.) You can also use urls there, as far as I know. For consistency you would still need a bibl style file, for which I used a tweaked version of bibl-apa.tex. (which is in ~/context-minimal/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/bib) And a last thing: I input not the BibTeX database but the .bbl which I generate separately. I can tweak that if necessary or to add specific features, like horizontal lines in the Bibliography for repeated author names. (Another requirement which I personally don't like). Maybe all this is rather unworthy of ConTeXt but it is comparatively easy to accomplish and it works. I hope it helps. [NTG-context] betas
Hi, As some of you might have noticed, we're in transition to luatex 0.80 (currently 0.78.1). This binary is somewhat faster with respect to nodes without modification of Lua code, but it also provides an additional node field access mechanism. Luigi and I spent quite some time on getting that done and in the process some 70 context files were adapted (as we needed to test). However, it's likely that I have missed some needed changes. As both access mechanisms cannot be mixed, one has to be consistent in usage. Also, the somewhat faster (new) usage is more sensitive for errors so it has to be used with robust (proven) code (read: pluggable code can best use the traditional node field accessors which also have been sped up). And of course it only makes sense for very demanding cases (as stock luatex is already rather efficient now), think of devanagari (where we can get 50% faster) and complex arabic (some 25%). As ConTeXt spends 50% of its time in Lua it might make a difference in other places too. Anyway, for instance the 175 fonts-mkiv manual processes 10% faster due to this and sometimes more can be achieved (it really depends on how much Lua enhanced mechanisms are used). Roughly I get on my win 8.1 64 bit laptop for the font manual: 10sec luatex0.77 with previous context code base 10.25 sec luatex0.77 with current context code base 9.00 sec luatex0.78 with current context code base 7.50 sec luajittex 0.78 with current context code base (This manual loads quite some fonts in the process.) In case you wonder why speed is an issue: it really matters when tex is used as a service, and I like fast edit-test cycles too. The target is to get 20 pps or more even for complex documents. It's not that hard to get 550 pps for simple 1000 page one-word-per page documents but when much more kicks in we quickly drop to 15-20 pps. Also, Luigi and I also want to reach reasonable speeds on android phones (triggered by Harald's experiments at the context meeting) but that's another topic. Re: [NTG-context] EPUB woes
Hi All, I find that the ConTeXt approach to creating the EPub is flawed is a fundemental way! NOT TECHNICALLY. The EPub Standard is a big mess and if you really look at not a true standard in a true sense. Let me explain. 1) The file structure is well documented and properly defines the way a EPub file MUST contain and how file therein must be structure and listed. (notice that I use the word MUST) 2) Now, what a EPub-READER must implement to handle is very little. There are HARDLY ANY provisions that a certified EPuB-READER has to implement any particular engine or features therein to display/render the information contain in the EPub-file/wrapper. In other words it is simply a wrapper file format. and truly nothing more. There is NO REQUIREMENT in the standard that perfectly valid xhtml or HTML5 will be properly displayed in a certified EPub Reader! The standard has become more strict in recent years, yet still lacking. Am 16.11.2013 um 18:37 schrieb Aditya Mahajan adit...@umich.edu: [snip, snip] When you run `mtxrun --script epub --make test`, it just takes the files specificied in the files field, and zips them in as a epub file. Now, in principle, any epub reader should support the any XHTML file; in practice, they only support the default XHTML tags. The XML+CSS file that ConTeXt generates are not handled correctly by most (all?) EPUB readers. Here is where my critic of ConTeXt approach grabs. What good is if one produces a perfectly correct EPub, yet hardly any EPub reader can handle. I remember correctly, an EPub Reader need not implement the handling of xhtml inorder to be certified or, if you wish, adhere to the standard. The basic reason why xhtml is handled is because most html renders handle xhtml. Yet, the standard only requires that very basic html features be implemented and the author is required to offer fallbacks incase features are not supported. So there are three options: 1. Wait until the EPUB readers catch up. It took almost 10-15 years for the browsers to catch up with the HTML standards, and I don't have much hope for EPUB readers here. Last I checked, none of them supported even MATHML-2. Like I mentioned above a EPub reader is not REQUIRED to support it! 2. Write a script (either using xmlproc, or using you favorite XML parser in your favorite language) that converts the XML generated by ConTeXt into a standard XHTML file. This is the easiest and the least time consuming alternative. AGAIN, as mentioned above there is no guarantee that it will be displayed properly. Support/export of HTML5 would seem to me to be a better option, but then the HTML5 standard is not complete and not fully supported by most newer ereaders, also. 3. Modify the way in which ConTeXt generates the XML files. Ideally, I should be able to write something like Would be nice if there where commands in ConTeXt or a module for defining what should go into the CSS and a mode epub where the ConTeXt commands are converted to suitible HTML5 structures that are suitiable for most ereaders. Features: 1) margins in percentages 2) font sizes based on em 3) a new file for every chapter optional for sections user defined Just a few. Lots more can be found in any decent documentation on writing ebooks. regards Keith. ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___
Re: [NTG-context] EPUB woes
On Sat, 16 Nov 2013, Bill Meahan wrote: I would /expect/ to get a valid EPUB file, or so I'm lead to believe. At the moment, I'm simply trying it out using Hans' export-example.tex file that comes as part of the standard ConTeXt distribution, either Standalone or part of one of the other distributions. I haven't even opened the export-example.tex file in an editor (yet) in this round of trials and I've even run the script against it right in the /base/ directory where it is found in the distribution so I don't understand why it is not producing a valid EPUB. Once I've got that sorted out, I can try applying the lessons learned to my own documents. ConTeXt provides two types of exports. The first is an XML export. Consider a sample file: ~~~ {test.tex} \setupbackend[export=yes] \starttext \startsection[title={This is a test}] \startparagraph Some random text \startitemize \item First \item Second \stopitemize \stopparagraph \stopsection \stoptext ~~~ Running `context test.tex` generates a `test.export` file that looks as follows: ~~~ {test.export} ?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' standalone='yes' ? !-- input filename : test -- !-- processing date : Sat Nov 16 12:19:59 2013 -- !-- context version : 2013.11.01 15:02 -- !-- exporter version : 0.30 -- document language=en file=test date=Sat Nov 16 12:19:59 2013 context=2013.11.01 15:02 version=0.30 xmlns:m=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML; section detail=section location='aut:1' sectionnumber1/sectionnumber sectiontitleThis is a test/sectiontitle sectioncontent paragraphSome random text itemgroup detail=itemize symbol=1itemitemtagm:math display=inline!-- begin m:mrow --m:mo•/m:mo!-- end m:mrow --/m:math/itemtagitemcontentFirst/itemcontent/item itemitemtagm:math display=inline!-- begin m:mrow --m:mo•/m:mo!-- end m:mrow --/m:math/itemtagitemcontentSecond/itemcontent/item/itemgroup/paragraph /sectioncontent /section /document ~~~ which is simply an XML representation of the document. In prinicple, if one adds an appropriate CSS file with that XML, any recent browser will be able to display it. So, if you change the first line of `test.tex` to ~~~ \setupbackend[export=yes, xhtml=yes, css=yes] ~~~ and run `context test.tex`, you will get four additional files: `test.xhtml`, `test-styles.css`, `test-images.css`, and `test.specification`. The `test.xhtml` file look as follows: ~~~{test.xhtml} ?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' standalone='yes' ? !-- input filename : test -- !-- processing date : Sat Nov 16 12:22:58 2013 -- !-- context version : 2013.11.01 15:02 -- !-- exporter version : 0.30 -- ?xml-stylesheet type=text/css href=test-styles.css? ?xml-stylesheet type=text/css href=test-images.css? ?xml-stylesheet type=text/css href=export-example.css? document language=en version=0.30 file=test xmlns:xhtml=http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml; xmlns:m=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML; date=Sat Nov 16 12:22:58 2013 context=2013.11.01 15:02 xhtml:a name=aut_1section location=aut:1 detail=section sectionnumber1/sectionnumber sectiontitleThis is a test/sectiontitle sectioncontent paragraphSome random text itemgroup symbol=1 detail=itemizeitemitemtagm:math display=inline!-- begin m:mrow --m:mo•/m:mo!-- end m:mrow --/m:math/itemtagitemcontentFirst/itemcontent/item itemitemtagm:math display=inline!-- begin m:mrow --m:mo•/m:mo!-- end m:mrow --/m:math/itemtagitemcontentSecond/itemcontent/item/itemgroup/paragraph /sectioncontent /section/xhtml:a /document ~~~ Notice that apart from the three lines specifying the CSS files, the rest of the document is the same as in XML export. The two css files, `test-styles.css` and `test-images.css` include the relevant code for the style modifications and images in the document. The css file `export-example.css` comes with the ConTeXt distribution and has the default values for most ConTeXt elements. If you open the `test.xhtml` file in any browser, it will work correctly (because an XHTML markup is extensible and can use any XML tags as long as the behavior of the tag is specified in a CSS file). This is, however, not a XHTML file that includes the default XHTML markup (h1, p, ul, etc.) Now, lets come back to the last file generated by the export: `test.specification`. This is a lua file that contains: ~~~{test.specification} return { [files]={ test-styles.css, test-images.css, export-example.css, test.xhtml }, [identifier]=e6a91a13-4e08-9494-3817-bfffe872be2c, [images]={}, [language]=en, [name]=test, [root]=test.xhtml, } When you run `mtxrun --script epub --make test`, it just takes the files specificied in the files field, and zips them in as a epub file. [NTG-context] Last standalone version suddenly will not load user module
Hello ConTeXist. For several years, I use very often my library for processing CSV tables. Even 2 months ago worked flawlessly in both versions (standalone version and ConTeXt TeXLive 2012). I am update standalone version fairly often (at least one times for two months). Unfortunately, today I found out that my latest standalone version fails to load the library and the compilation is complete with an error message. I find now that I can not detect and correct a problem in the library. Maybe in it any longer unsupported commands. Can someone be read from the attached log file? Or I'll have to conserve the previous version of the standalone for my ConTeXt applications? I can, if necessary, to send my module... [NTG-context] Bibliography: spacing in cite, lettering of repeated years
I am just starting with the bibliography module and ran the following test: \cite[authoryear,left=(yes: ,right=; Rk)][frank98foundations] here, \cite[author][frank98foundations], then \cite[year][frank98foundations], then \cite{otrosina88isozyme,frank91ecological,frank98foundations,abraham82dynamics:} said and then { \cite[otrosina88isozyme]} commented and then \cite{abraham82dynamics:} With my setup, that gave: (yes: Frank 1998; Rk) here, Frank, then 1998, then (Otrosina et al. 1988; Frank 1991c,1998; Abraham and Shaw 1982) said and then (Otrosina et al. 1988) commented and then (Abraham and Shaw 1982) I give more on setup below. My three issues: 1. The space after the period in et al. stretches, which does not look right. I tried modifying the otherstext field in various ways, but could not get a working solution. Any advice? 2. With the compress option on for authoryears, the dates 1991c,1998 are correctly combined in the second set, but I would like a space as 1991c, 1998 instead of 1991c,1998. 3. The citations listed here are all of the ones in the current document. The date 1991c should be 1991, without a letter, because there is neither 1991a nor 1991b. Is there a way to get consistent letter of repeated years, such that no letter is present without repeat, and the letters are given in the order in which they appear in the text? --- I am new to ConTeXt, and started by copying someone else' environment. Re: [NTG-context] Percent symbol inside \type{}?
I have used a new subject line. If you see any problem that makes Changing the subject line is not enough. If you are reading another email sent to the list, and you press reply or something similar, the email you send will contain instructions to link it to the earlier email, and many mailers will display them as one thread (see attached image that shows how it is displayed in my mailer). I suspect that's what you've done here. Technically, the problem is that your email's headers contain a field References, which they shouldn't; but from a usage point of view the easiest is to simply start a new thread by using the compose feature of your mailer, or equivalent. As I see that you're using Thunderbird, I'm surprised that it doesn't display the emails in one thread, by the way. [NTG-context] A simpler way to make a bibliography
After struggling with all the programming prescribed by Context to set up a bibliography, and examining a few dozen *.bib, *.bst and a *bbl file, I decided to do things the simple way. My concept is, that instead of creating a *bib file I could with the same amount of effort create a plain text file to be imported directly into my Context file. I studied the bibliography of The Chicago Manual of Style to determine the order, punctuation and format. My file is called book.foo. Now if I choose to use some of these entries in another book a simple cut and paste between two editor sessions will do. For ease in editing I put each item in each entry on a separate line. TeX/Context will take care of puttng them together in a paragraph. Of course this lacks the generality of the bibtex approach. But I don't need all that flexibilty. None of the current biblio styles specified for Context incorporate the ISBN field. So I just put it at the end of each entry preceded by a \crlf. Without further ado here is the book.foo file: -- \chapter{References} %authors. title. city: publisher, year\crlf %isbn Bah, Tavmjong. {\it Inkscape: Guide to a Vector Drawing Program}. Upper Saddle River, New Jersey: Prentice-Hall, 2011 \crlf ISBN 978-0-13-276414-8 Culleton, John R. Jr. {\it Create Book Covers with Scribus} (pdf e-book). London: Mitchell Beazley, 2006\crlf ISBN 978-1-84533-242-6 --- If by chance an entry ends up split between two pages a simple \page[yes] command can be inserted. I considered instead putting a \goodbreak between entries but figured it wasn't worth the bother. Since I call this fragment a \chapter it is listed in the TOC. I had to put \whitespace[medium] right after the \startbackmatter command just as I did after \startbodymatter. for my purposes for this task simple is better and much faster. -- John Culleton Wexford Press Free list of books for self-publishers: http://wexfordpress.net/shortlist.html PDF e-book: Create Book Covers with Scribus available at http://www.booklocker.com/books/4055.html ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

Re: [NTG-context] Lucida doesn't work in TL 2013 / latest ConTeXt
I'm sorry. I was pointing TEXMFLOCAL to the wrong (older) version of fonts without OT in the filename. However, the Type1 fonts still don't work.
