There is a benefit. If your are a high end audio person, you know
that
lining in a tape-deck to a sound card does give you a loss in sound
quality, graininess, and even some buzzing called bus noise, not to
be
confused with the common 60 Hz hum. This unit probably attempts to

Odd question

2004-11-12 Thread TerriStimmel
Hello everyone,
I have a question that might be considered off topic. But I'm asking,
because I'm getting my DVD player today.
I have two TV's. The one that is in my living room, I got from a friend, as
a trade for my old HP.
I don't know much about this TV, and that's where I'm hoping I can get some
thoughts.
First of all, this TV is mono. I didn't think those sorts of TV's existed
anymore, so this makes me think that the TV is pretty old.
The question I have though, is just how old might it be?
Also, I'm trying to find audio and video jacks on the TV, but so far I
haven't found any.
Does anyone know when these jacks were first put in TV's?
Certainly this TV isn't so old that it doesn't have audio and video jacks.
The TV is in color, and it does have really good sound.
I think it actually sounds a good bit better than my TV/VCR combo, that is
in stereo.
The reason I feel this way, is because the speakers on the combo are very
small. And if the TV is turned up, just a bit too loud, those speakers make
a kind of hum.
I'm not explaining that exactly right, but that's as close as I can get.
I do know that this TV is made by RCA. And it's a good size one, maybe 19,
or 20 inches. The top of the TV is narrow. Actually, the whole thing is
narrow, and wide in size.
I hope that makes some sense?
It works rather well. I notice that when I turn it off, I don't hear that
static-like sound, as I'm used to hearing on my combo.
I'm not sure how to describe what that sound is like.
There is one odd thing I've noticed about this TV.
Some of the channels come in with a lot of static. I don't understand why
this is happening.
I have cable, and the cable is connected to a splitter.
This is so I'm able to have cable TV in my living room, and in my bedroom,
where the combo TV has retired to.
It had to go in there, sense it was smaller than this RCA.
Would anyone know why some of the channels are staticy, and others aren't?
It isn't like this with my other TV. Nor is it like this with the RCA, when
I have the VCR on.
My friend who gave me the TV, thought it might have to do with the cable
splitter, and having the cable split. But I didn't see how this was
possible.
Also, I know others who have their cable set up like this, and they don't
have this sort of problem.
By the way, another thing that makes me think this RCA can't be too old, is
that the channels did have to be programmed in. Now rather or not it was
done automatically, or manually, I'm not sure.
Any thoughts on any of this, will be much appreciated. I really don't want
my DVD player in my bedroom, nor do I want to switch the TV's out.
Thank you,
Terri

Re: digital USB powered stereo fm transmitter

2004-11-12 Thread RQJ
Hi Peter,
I can't say for sure about the USB transmitter, as to exactly what features
and functions it has.
I do not have a USB transmitter, I just have an FM transmitter connected to
my computer.
If you have 2 soundcards, whatever sound comes thru the soundcard that the
transmitter is connected to will be transmitted.
It seems to me, that if you have a USB transmitter connected to the
computer, any sound from the computer will be transmitted.
I was merely demonstrating to Shannon the possibilities of what can be
accomplished by using a transmitter.
Some transmitters come pre-tuned to a specific frequency, most others
however, can be tuned to one of usually 7 frequencies,
on either a low, or high range.
Frequency selection is usually handled thru the use of dp switches, or a
small tuning screw.
Some transmitters can be set to boost the output, but most of the ones sold
in the US, may not have this feature due to FCC regulations.
It would be best to compare several transmitters, looking for the features
of particular interest to you.
HTH,
Richard Justice

Re: Odd question

2004-11-12 Thread ron scott
Hi Terry, I suggest that whether your T V is stereo, or momo, has more to do
with the model, rather than the age.
I have a consol model, from the mid 80's that is stereo, and has a whole
bunch of jacks in the back. I used to have a 20 inch from the mid 90's that
was momo, and the only conection it had was to screw on the coax from the
cable.
It's possible that the coax between the splitter and the TV is causing the
static.
good luck

Hi list,
As far as the tv goes, the way you'd hook anything to it would be
through the coe-ax cable connection at the back. Like Rob said, get a
converter from Radioshack. I know Radioshack carries them because we had to
get one a couple of years ago to hook up our dvd player. My wife got this
particular tv in like 95 or so. The converter is a little box that plugs in
to the coe-ax in the back and on the box itself you've got a few RCA
outlets. Hope that helps.

Re: VORBIS COMPARED TO MP3

2004-11-12 Thread Denny Daughters
Kevin and list,
I've been doing some testing with the vorbis versus mp3 conversion last
night. With mp3s, you can go down to 96kbps and you start to hear the
compression. Knock it down to 80 and it sounds really compressed. With
Ogg-vorbis, you can knock it down to 80kbps and start to hear a little
compression, but it's not nearly as bad as it is on the mp3 side of things.
Because of how the different formats compress, ogg-vorbis compresses things
much further than mp3s and it still sounds good. It's kind of like the
difference between vhs and bayta formats. As I remember it, bayta was a
superior format but the recorders kept breaking down and vhs was the format
that was more popular. I can remember going in to video stores in the early
to mid 80s and seeing vhs tapes and a much smaller section for bayta. Hope
that helps.

2004-11-12 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi again,
The other thing I was going to mention is that if I send somebody a .ogg
file would they open it? Or would they just delete it. If they don't know me,
let's say I'm emailing out aircheck tapes of myself for a radio job, I would
say somebody would be more likely to open an mp3 file than a .ogg simply
because mp3 files are more recognizable. Just my thoughts.

Hi Kevin. I think with Vorvis, your supposed to be able to get the same CD
quality that can be achieved with MP3, but with half the file size. I hope
this helps.

That's when you
put vorbis at a 128 bitrate. Of course, I don't mind having mp3

Re: Odd question

2004-11-12 Thread Gary Wood
Hi Terry. Manufacturers didn't come out with stereo TV's until around 1985,
but I think they had mono TV's a while after that; but I would imagine that
any TV you would buy today would be stereo.

Subject: Odd question

Hello everyone,
I have a question that might be considered off topic. But I'm asking,
because I'm getting my DVD player today.
I have two TV's. The one that is in my living room, I got from a friend,
as
a trade for my old HP.
I don't know much about this TV, and that's where I'm hoping I can get
some
I think it actually sounds a good bit better than my TV/VCR combo, that is
in stereo.
The reason I feel this way, is because the speakers on the combo are very
small. And if the TV is turned up, just a bit too loud, those speakers
make
a kind of hum.
I'm not explaining that exactly right, but that's as close as I can get.
I do know that this TV is made by RCA. And it's a good size one, maybe
19,
or 20 inches.
Nor is it like this with the RCA,
when
I have the VCR on.
My friend who gave me the TV, thought it might have to do with the cable
splitter, and having the cable split. But I didn't see how this was
possible.
Also, I know others who have their cable set up like this, and they don't
have this sort of problem.
By the way, another thing that makes me think this RCA can't be too old,
is
that the channels did have to be programmed in. Now rather or not it was
done automatically, or manually, I'm not sure.
Any thoughts on any of this, will be much appreciated. I really don't
want
my DVD player in my bedroom, nor do I want to switch the TV's out.
Thank you,
Terri

I know I won't find the perfect player out there, but I'd like to get the

I have even considered the PlexTalk, but although that gives me some

Any recommendations???

Hi.

If you upgrade from nero 5.5 to 6.6 and choose the downloadable version

There is no significant difference in the interface and it is very

Re: VORBIS COMPARED TO MP3

2004-11-12 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi.

The main advantages of MP3 over Vorbis are the same advantages that windows
has over linux - there are a minority of vorbis users and therefore tools
are limited.

With MP3 you'd find it difficult to find a player that doesn't support that
format these days including a large variation of bit rates and variable rate
encoding. Also with MP3, you'll find an array of tools for normalising,
editing and burning without having to hunt down and probably pay for plug
ins and the like to support vorbis.

I don't know of any tools that will allow you to change the volume of a
batch of vorbis files without first having to convert them to WAV files and
then convert back?

I think an MP3 file coded at a high bit rate with a good encoder like lame
will match the vorbis file for sound quality. Sure, the vorbis file will
take up less disc space but if you've got plenty of disc space this should
be a minor consideration.

Re: Newest version of Nero

There's certainly some wisdom in the philosophy of upgrading only when you
have to but I must admit, after buying a new PC recently, I've upgraded
winamp, nero, notmad explorer, real player and windows media player and am
wishing I'd done so ages back.

With regards to nero though, I think Richard's spot on; if you don't need
any additional functionality and your burning CD's with no problem, I'd
stick with what you've got. I would also say though that in nero's case,
the interface has not changed between 5.5 and version 6.

Unless the latest version has more features that you really need

Yes, it is possible to change the bit rate for CDEX as well as selecting

tab from this multi-tab dialogue. Just tab 2 or 3 times and you'll come
across the bit rate combo box. You can use your arrow keys to move up and
down the values available for the encoder that you've chosen. The lame
encoder is the encoder by default and the default bit rate is 128kbps. You
can take this right up to 320kbps if you wish for this encoder though others
such as the WMA encoder I think will only go up to 160kbps.

Hi. Is it possible to set a bit rate when ripping tracks to MP3 using
CDex,
and if so, how is this done? I've looked at all the settings I can find,
but
am new to the program so may have missed something obvious. Tracey.

cd burning

2004-11-12 Thread Cris Hall
Maybe someone can explain things, or at least, suggest a good sight to go
to in order to find out about conflicts among cd burning programs. My
limited understanding is that one should only use one burning program on
any given computer. So, if you have nero, you won't want to use anything
else. Then, however, I was told that there wouldn't be any conflict
between nero and music match junk box, but due to the inaccessibility of
that product, I never did get to test the theory. Real one says that the
driver is unavailabble, and I could never get windows media player to burn
anything. I haven't tried winamp for fear of conflicting with nero.
Thanks very much.

Hi.

If you upgrade from nero 5.5 to 6.6 and choose the downloadable version
rather than have a CD shipped, the cost is $39.99 or £22 UK currency.

There is no significant difference in the interface and it is very
accessible with JAWS.

Hi Tom.

Ok, that rings a bell. I think there's some dialogue floating around in IE
that you can only get to with the JAWS cursor. Once you get to this
dialogue, you can click on one of the controls to get rid of that thing.
Sorry I can't be more specific but it's been a long time since I fell into
that one.

Re: Newest version of Nero

I can use and am using NERO 6.0 OEM (the one once sold for $12) which
contains nero express and start smart, and can use express quite easily
with Window-Eyes. Nero 6.6, I probably will buy however, since the
interface is a little easier, though express is definitely useable though I
do get crashes with it sometimes.

You could always run the output of one sound card into the input of the
other then have the output of that one connected to the transmitter. I have
three computer's audio daisy chained together like that so that the sound of

make an ISA c.d. that will hold more data than an audio. But my music
folder has lots of WMA files as well as WAV files and mp3's. If I were to
make a data disc with these different file extensions would the disc play on
an mp3 player? Or will it only play certain tracks, those being the ones
with the mp3 extension? Thanks for any help.

Hi again,
The other thing I was going to mention is that if I send somebody a .ogg
file would they open it? Or would they just delete it. If they don't know
me, let's say I'm emailing out aircheck tapes of myself for a radio job, I
would say somebody would be more likely to open an mp3 file than a .ogg
simply because mp3 files are more recognizable. Just my thoughts.

 Hi Andrea,

I have a Tascam stand-alone ce burner connected to my main stereo system
and
anything that I can put through the stereo can be burned on to a cd.

This means my cassette deck, cd carousel, am/fm receiver, turntable and
even
the music choice and tv programs from my DirecTv satellite receiver can go
 to cd anytime I want.

The Tascam 700 is rather expensive, but I found the best price at Sam Ash
Music. They have an 800 number as well as a website. The 800 number is
 472-6274.

Tascam has come out with a newer model than the 700, but I don't know if
it
is as easy for a blind person to use.

I really like mine and I've made some cool cd's.

Joanne and list,
If you make a back-up data cd, the cd should play all the different file
formats that you have. I'd convert the wav files to mp3s just so you have
more room on the cd. When you're done burning the cd, the computer will
treat the cd as another permanent floppy if you will just much bigger.

Hi Tracy. Yes, you can set the bit rate with CDex. You can even use
VBR,
which is variable bit rate. You can use ABR which finds an average bit
rate. It seems like to me that CDex encourages you to use that setting.

Hi. Is it possible to set a bit rate when ripping tracks to MP3 using
 CDex,
and if so, how is this done? I've looked at all the settings I can
 find,
 but
am new to the program so may have missed something obvious. Tracey.

Re: broadcasting list

2004-11-12 Thread Richard Quan
Thanks, that's terrific. I was actually looking for the blind broadcaster
list but I like the sounds of the others and they would be useful.

Re: CD Recorder

2004-11-12 Thread Michael Lang
Perhaps a Minidisc deck would be even better. With an MD deck, one can
set and delete trackmarks as often as one wants to. With a CD recorder,
one can only set trackmarks once while recording.

How do you download this program? I have tried doing it with it added to
my
basket and without it in my basket. When I get to the page to select a
mirror site, I choose one and then get a page that it is downloading but
no
dialog comes up to download it. After about ten seconds a page having to
do
with another program they offer comes up. I have tried all three sites in
the US and the same thing happens.

How have you all downloaded the program?
