I've cut way back on my commenting/critiquing on images posted here mainly
because my critiques are my opinion on the photo in question and as such I
don't care to hear the photographer defending why he did this or that. Take

When I do comment/critique I try to mention at least one aspect of the image
that was done well along with the most glaring issue I see in the image, if
any.

What I miss here lately, and what I can not get on FaceBook, is
intelligent and constructive criticism.

Ten years ago, and even 3 or 4 years ago, I would post an image and more
experienced and talented members of the group would give me honest -- and
sometimes even brutal -- criticisms, More often, a post would draw
comments on what was interesting and good about the image, what
aspects were weak or dissonant, and what could have been done, or still
could be done, to make it stronger. Now, a few people will let me know if
they think one of my submissions has some merit. If I get no response to
a

PESO, I get the message that no one particularly likes it, but it has been
quite some time since I received some critical feedback, and even longer
since I saw any negative feedback.

I think we have become more and more like FaceBook, where people will
"like" an image, but not go much beyond that. There have been a few
images

in the recent past that have provoked interesting and meaningful
discussions on composition, lighting,l exposure or other aspects of the
work, but those seem to me few and far between. Much more common are
posts
with no feedback or with a comment like "pretty butterfly." Everyone
likes

to hear that the subject of their image is attractive, but that is no
substitute for the kinds of intense discussions and debates that went on
here when the number of active participants was higher.

Part of that is your fault, your photography is better so the reasons to
give negative feedback are much smaller. When I'm teaching people
driving at the race track they generally start out with a few very big
problems. It's generally fairly easy to decide which one or two things
to work on. At a certain point, we've taken care of the few big issues,
then that leaves the little things. In a quantitative field like driving
on a track, the danger is in overwhelming the student with too many
little things. In an artistic field like photography any one of those
little things can be a matter of taste where some people will agree with
the proposed change and others not.

I think we have become more and more like FaceBook, where people will
"like" an image, but not go much beyond that. There have been a few images

Joking aside, I agree with you wholeheartedly. The quality of feedback
on this list was among the highest I've seen online. The feedback I see
these days is still very good, but it's a lot less frequent.

Re: PPG

2018-06-19 Thread Brian Walters
Yeah, there's obviously a problem.

Someone on DP Review mentioned failed uploads a few days ago so, even though
it's been several years since I've uploaded anything to PPG - or voted for that
matter - I attempted an upload as a test. It failed. I've just tried again and
it failed again.

Maybe it's a temporary glitch?

Re: PPG is back online

2018-05-23 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Sorry, Dan,

I didn't read that message. I saw that it was working and wanted to alert
those PDMLers who were concerned in the past few days.

As for the rest, - it looks like PPG is not among Ricoh marketing
team priorities for Pentax brand. It looks more like a liability at this
point: they are afraid to cut it off completely (infuriating many
Pentaxians), but they also don't want to spend any resources for support
and moderation.
PPG was Asahi-Pentax's project that doesn't generate any direct revenue,
and it became an unloved step-child of Ricoh.
(I suspect that most if not all of the PPG team have been long gone or
moved to different roles.)

PPG was essentially a PR attempt for Pentax. I suspect, that it might not
have been very successful from the business' point of view. I don't know
if Asahi-Pentax or Ricoh had/has any measure of the popularity of that
website, and of how much exposure it gets, -- to judge if it is worth
their efforts. Also, I am not a marketing specialist, - so I don't know
how such things could be measured (if at all).

I have a thought that if Pentax or Ricoh had bought one of the popular
photo-hosting services (photo.net, flickr, ..) and used a portion of that
platform to develop a separate Pentax-branded community (such as PPG), -
they could've had a better chance for success and exposure.

But at the same time, that is a totally different area of business.
Obviously, Pentax wasn't prepared to diversify (too narrowly focused
company, with only a few product categories). Ricoh might be in a better
position, given the variety of products and services they provide.

Anyway,... Stay cool, be happy!

Igor

Whenever I experience some display weirdness like this, I always
assume it is in their CSS and just try a different browser. IMHO
Microsoft's IE should be your *last* option. I'm using Chrome almost
exclusively now, but you should also have Firefox installed. If it
looks bad in one browser, (it will most likely be IE) then try one of
the others to view the same content.

Re: PPG - Uploading of High Resolution Old Images

2012-01-22 Thread Paul Stenquist
I only recently began submitting a few more pics to PPG after taking several
years off. However, I really didn't like those 600- pixel-tall images being
upsized to 900-pixel-tall images by who knows what method. I looked at some and
could see degradation. So rather than delete them all, I made new jpegs from
the original hi-res images and uploaded them. Of course, I had only placed
about 35 images prior to the site redesign. If I had 100, I might have said "to
hell with it and taken them down."

The PPG states that the minimum size for uploading is 900 pixels
high and this is what I've been using. This size seems to be
large enough to avoid images being enlarged for viewing, except
when viewed on very large monitors (for example, on my 22"

As PPG is going to allow us to upload higher res versions of images

wondering whether I should consider uploading images larger than
900 pixels high.

It says that "Images greater than 900 pixels high will be
automatically resized" so would uploading anything larger may not make
a difference. It does not appear that they archive the original file
so that does not seem to be a way to 'future-proof' your uploads.

Yeah...I upload 900 pixels high; so any sharpening is not tampered by
the resize.

It is said that a good photographer can find art or beauty in the most
mundane of objects.

There is a Pentax photographer who seems determined to prove that
point. He or she has posted an image to the PPG entitled "Dog Shit,"
and yes, the image depicts exactly what the title leads one to expect.
Dog Shit. Lying in the grass.

Art? Humor? Anger? Or perhaps did he or she just have a shitty day?

I have not yet made up my mind. Go and vote on images in the PPG, and
perhaps you will find it and then you can decide for yourself.

Of course, if it is accepted into the gallery, then we can all view it
and debate whether it is art or just a pile of crap.

It lends support to the theory that the submission process

Facebook around 20. dec. stating that the voting period for your

I'm finding the same sort of pattern. Submitted 7 over a two day period 6 of
which were approved. Timing for their to be a decision can be very brief and
that together with the high approval ratio makes me slightly ambivalent as to
the level of judgment being applied..

Re: PPG

Earlier, I asked a few questions of Pentax about the yea/nay accept/reject
policy, but they were never answered.
Whatever it is, it must be flexible and accommodating to the press of uploads
and voting. I don't consider it a personal offense, however, that I wasn't
given an answer. I might haveset it up ion a like manner.

I'm not sure how long it took my last image to be accepted, but it was
three days or less.  This last rejection shocked me a bit, however.  I
started to upload last night, but was interrupted after one image, so
I stopped.  When I signed on this afternoon, less that 18 hours after
that upload, it had already been rejected.  So, I decided to wait
until after dinner before uploading the others I had planned to add
last night.

They must have a lot of photographers voting on images now, for that
many negative votes to be recorded between 11:00 PM and 4:00 PM the
next day!

Except that, the 'rule' referred to in a previous post says that
anything done in-camera has to be loaded to the "In-camera Effects"

Hello all,

I for one am happy that Pentax/Ricoh have the gallery. I often participate in
"judging". It's not a perfect system, but, I think many of the images are far
better than those found on photo.net (and no annoying pop-ups). I have entered
images in a local photography contest(Greenwood SC Festival of
Flowers/FujiFilm), great images IMO, with only one honorable mention after nine
entries in three years. Each year it cost me about $150 for scanning, printing,
and mounting and the entry fee each time was only $15. Beauty is in the eye of
the beholder.

I plan to enter images in the Pentax/Ricoh gallery in the near future, the hard
part will be getting them scanned. Most of my images are on film.

Pentax/Ricoh's gallery could be greatly improved with the addition of
additional

categories as suggested here.

Do any of the other "major" camera makers, DSLRs in particular, have equivalent
free galleries?

With regard,

Robert

Hmmm? That sounds like a great idea.

Let's have a gallery site to showcase the awesome work the photographers
who use our cameras are doing and fix the voting so the lowest common
denominator can block anything they don't understand.

From: Paul Stenquist

I like it, but I can see how a silhouette might be rejected without much
thought on the part of critiquers. Remember, many of the photographer judges
are shooters of minimal to modest experience. Anything that's a departure from
the norm is likely to fail in the peer judging. Paul On Dec 28, 2011, at 9:15

well considering how easy it is to typo - perhaps :-)

but "Abstract" can be a bit tricky.

I have a problem with "lifestyle" (don't go there, Cotty)
versus um say "urban" and note that sometimes "nature" and
"Wildlife" images get confused. If they really want to drop things into
precise slots I think it would help to elaborate. Is anything with
buildings in it prominately "Architecture"? "Cityscape/Urban" or
"travel" ? No "street photography" or "Photo-journalist" category -

just "Documentary"

There are some blurry lines there.

But there's actually a dedicated "HDR" category as well as an "In Camera
Effects" category. There doesn't seem to be much point in having a
separate HDR category unless they expect submissions to be manipulated
in post.

Heh. From "Your Photo Gallery > Understand the Submission Process" ...

"2. Artists will approve or deny a photo, based upon technical
proficiency and artistic concept, including compositions, color,
subject & form"

2a. Or after viewing it quickly without study. Tough titties.

Re: PPG

2011-12-29 Thread Bruce Walker
I don't take the category into account--much--because I recognize how
difficult it can be to decide what category might apply. Into which
category would you place a static shot of a Classic Car, for example?

"Photos must be selected for one of these categories: Abstract, B&W,
Cityscape/ Urban, Documentary, Glamour/Fashion, HDR, In-Camera
Effects, Landscapes, Lifestyle, Macro, Nature, Portraiture,
Sports/Action, Travel, Food."

What about a tinted duo-tone? I'd put it under B&W except that I'm
afraid the unwashed masses would say, "Oi! That's color!
Bzzzt!"

I think that the PPG admins could easily switch the Category to a more
appropriate one where the submitter quite clearly goofed up, like a
landscape tagged as Portraiture.

I think this is the rule that Ann is referring to:

"Photographs should not be overly manipulated with filters and effects
unless done in-camera and loaded to the in-camera effects category. Some
dodging and burning to reveal an image is allowed, however, it is not
acceptable to move around pixels or add or remove elements. Cropping is
allowed."

As I said, there doesn't seem to be any point in a dedicated HDR
category unless significant post manipulation is carried out. At the
very least, blending of two exposures would seem to be necessary. I
think the rule has to be taken with a grain of salt.
